I wonder if Wonder Woman ever wondered if she needed to hear the whole truth from her Golden Lasso captives.

Wonder Woman is perhaps the iconic superheroine. With her godlike powers, lasso of truth and Amazon heritage, Princess Diana of Themyscira is understandably looked on as one of the clearest manifestations of female power in the comic book universe. There is of course a backstory to WW’s dominant appearance and that lies with the attitude and views of her creators, writer William Moulton Marston and illustrator Harry G Peter. Marston in particular was heavily influenced by his feminist wife, Elizabeth who wanted her husband to create a powerful female hero, physically superior to men, and equal to them intellectually to demonstrate women’s potential to challenge the restrictive gender roles of the early 1940s. The Marstons lived an unconventional lifestyle, establishing a ménage a trois with the beautiful dark haired Olive Byrne, who Peter allegedly used as his inspiration for Diana’s appearance. William Marston’s liberal and pro-feminist views were real enough, but he also had a deep fascination with the bondage fetish and his Golden Age stories are filled with imagery of Wonder Woman being tied up, chained up and generally held captive by any number of male and female villains. It was therefore no accident that Diana’s principal weapon is not her super strength or robot plane, but her golden lasso - a lariat that compels anyone caught in it to tell the truth, but which is also a super tough rope very useful for restraining enemies who did not wish to be captured by the Amazon.
As can be seen from the page above, the bondage in Marston’s and Hay’s work was not confined to Wonder Woman herself. Her college sidekicks, the Holliday Girls led by the overweight but irrepressibly cheery Etta, were frequently bound and gagged and requiring Amazonian rescue, but were more than capable of dishing out the bondage themselves when the occasion arose. As the relative comics artistic freedoms of the wartime years were pulled back in the 1950s, and the portrayal of Wonder Woman passed to other illustrators, the fetish imagery associated with the character was considerably reduced. However, Wonder Woman has remained a favourite comic book character, female role model and feminist icon ever since. The groundbreaking Marstons would be proud.

Portrait of a Mexican Vaquero Horseman by Frederic Remington, 1890.
I was inspired to post this painting after reading the following myth-busting excerpt from an article in 'The Week' magazine (3 February 2024, p.15). It is a brief summary of a column written by Tom Zoellner in the Los Angeles Times, titled 'The Ironic Truth About Cowboys':
You won't find many real cowboys in Arizona these days, says Tom Zoellner. Visit the State Capitol, though, and you'll see lots of fake ones. Republican lawmakers are so fond of cowboy hats and bolo ties that some of their gatherings resemble "a family reunion out of Wyatt Earp days". Western attire has become a badge of identity, used to "project a conservative image of toughness, independence and suspicion of government". For some of these politicians, one suspects, it may also connect to a cherished fantasy of a simpler - and dare one say it, whiter - age. This is ironic on many levels. "As a profession, cowboying flourished only for a brief period, roughly from 1865 to 1895." It was a low-paid job that grew out of the Mexican vaquero tradition, not anything brought by Anglo settlers. The cowboy hat is "a modified sombrero", and the lingo of the trade - lariat, corral, chaps - comes from Spanish. The supposed golden age of ranching was also heavily dependent on "government largesse": it only persisted because of generous public grazing leases and federal dams. So when Arizona lawmakers dress up like cowboys, they're paying homage not to an era of "rugged individualism", but to "a Washington-driven economy subsidised by taxpayers."

How many times does Diana pull Jaune towards her using her lasso of truth to flirt with him?
Jaune: Well, I remember that happening about... *counts with his fingers* four times.
*suddenly, a certain golden lariat is coiled around him*
Jaune: *eyes widen* Okay, scratch that. Make that five times--EEP!!
*Jaune is pulled towards Diana, who has a flirtatious beam on her face*
Jaune: *under the Lasso's magic* And I love it every time~.
Diana: *giggles* You're quite adorable when you're tied up~.

VENY vs daniel garcia
Ding, Ding, Ding.                         Let the match commence.
compared to last week’s match, the presences of the masked members were very clear as they made it known whilst they surrounded the ring.
daniel, with a grin, reached out his hand for a shake only for VENY to outright deny him the satisfaction of it before locking up, the pain of each other's grips instantly battling towards a rope as daniel broke the hold without any question.
a slight huff in VENY’s voice, but not loud enough to distract from running the ropes; the standard motions flying through before VENY shoots in with a Big Boot knocking the other down towards the canvas.
before quickly racing towards the top rope, barrelling down with a Shooting Star Press before pinning.
1..
        2..
                   KICK OUT BY DANIEL GARCIA!
as the tension got tighter, the remaining masked figures got closer towards the ring as VENY tried for a Flourish Forever on daniel only to be distracted by the others as daniel escaped.
fighting them off, daniel brought back the crowd to him as he provided a dance towards them with the crowd going wild.
but it was no use of VENY fighting with full force as the masked figures Lariat the other before bringing her up and sealed her fate with a Golden Trigger before rushing off.
with the odds in daniel’s favour, he grabbed VENY and wrapped them up into a Dragon Tamer into a Shooter combination with an immediate tap out from the other to seal the win.
“Here’s your winner, Red Death; Daniel Garcia!”
