BJP Faces Challenges in Winning Dalit Votes in Key Delhi Seats:

Despite securing a decisive victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, the BJP continues to face challenges in constituencies with a significant Dalit population. While the party won 21 of 36 seats where Dalits form at least 15% of the electorate, its success was limited in areas with the highest Dalit concentrations.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) retained strong support in these constituencies, winning eight of the 12 Scheduled Caste (SC)-reserved seats. AAP also outperformed BJP in constituencies where Dalits constitute over 20% of the population, winning 10 such seats compared to BJP’s eight. In seats with over 25% Dalit population, AAP won seven, while the BJP secured only three.

Dalit Voting Patterns in Delhi

According to Election Commission data, the Delhi constituencies with the highest Dalit populations include Sultanpur Majra (44%), Karol Bagh (41%), Gokalpur (37%), Mangol Puri (36%), Trilokpuri (32%), Ambedkar Nagar (31%), and Seemapuri (31%). Despite the BJP’s overall victory in Delhi, it struggled to make significant gains in these Dalit-dominated areas, securing wins in only a few constituencies such as Mangol Puri, Trilokpuri, Madipur, and Bawana—seats previously held by AAP.

Historically, Dalit voters in Delhi have shifted their support from the BJP to the Congress and, more recently, to AAP. The BJP’s challenges in Dalit-heavy areas have been evident since 1998 when it failed to win any SC-reserved seats in the Delhi Assembly elections. Even in 1993, when the BJP formed its last government in Delhi with 49 seats, it managed to secure only eight of the then 13 SC-reserved constituencies, highlighting its longstanding struggle to gain traction among Dalit voters.

Impact of Welfare Policies on Dalit Voters

Political analysts attribute AAP’s continued success in Dalit constituencies to its welfare schemes. Ashok Bharti, chairman of the National Confederation of Dalit Organisations, highlighted the popularity of initiatives like improved government schools and healthcare. These programs particularly resonated with Dalit women and families aspiring for better educational opportunities.

Additionally, Bharti noted that AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal effectively addressed concerns regarding constitutional protections for Dalits, countering opposition narratives suggesting that a dominant BJP government could alter reservation policies.

BJP's Strategy and Challenges

To improve its standing among Dalit voters, the BJP fielded candidates in two non-reserved constituencies with significant Dalit populations—Ballimaran and Matia Mahal. However, both candidates lost to AAP by considerable margins.

Yogender Chandolia, BJP MP from North West Delhi, argued that the party’s struggles stem from longstanding Congress-led narratives portraying the BJP as unsupportive of SC/ST communities. He emphasized the BJP’s efforts under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, including the construction of Ambedkar memorials, but acknowledged that these initiatives had yet to fully resonate with the Dalit electorate.

With AAP maintaining a stronghold in Dalit-dominated areas, the BJP faces an ongoing challenge in reshaping its appeal among these voters ahead of future elections.

Won 58 Medals for Delhi, UP Gov Helped Me a Lot: Divya Kakran Lashes Out at AAP Government for Contoversy

Commonwealth Games 2022 bronze medalist Divya Kakran on Thursday clarified that she was forced to move to Uttar Pradesh after she did not find support in Delhi.

“I came to Delhi in 2001 and in 2006, I started wrestling. I am living here in Gokalpur for the last 22 years," the wrestler said at a press conference.

“My father somehow managed to get me trained for wrestling.I used to wrestle with boys to earn money," she added.

Divya also said that she won numerous medals for Delhi and only Member of Parliament from North East Delhi, Manoj Kumar stood by her.

“In 2011 I won bronze for Delhi. Till 2017, I got 58 medals and all for Delhi. Only Manoj Tiwari came to us and gave me 3 lakh, That money helped me a lot," she said.

“They (Delhi government) did not give any help. We, at our family, cried a lot at our condition. Only then I went to UP," she said.
