Interview with Mike Carden for Bullz-Eye.com with Mike Farley May 11, 2007

The Academy Is are currently the textbook definition of a “buzz band.” Rolling Stone named them one of their top 10 artists to watch, Blender listed their new album, Santi, as one of their top 25 reasons to love 2007, and on top of it all, they're one of the bands participating in the Honda Civic Tour that's been headlined by Fall Out Boy. As such, Bullz-Eye was pretty psyched to get a chance to talk with the band's guitarist, Mike Carden, for a few minutes. We had the opportunity to quiz him about working with producer Butch Walker on the new album, the accuracy of his Wikipedia entry, the departure of Tom Conrad from the group's ranks, whether he ever had a “rumble” with bandmate William Beckett in their younger days and if their fans can spell. 

Mike Carden: Hello, hello! 

Bullz-Eye: Hey, how's it going? 

MC: Good, good, good. 

BE: So given how quickly Christina (the label rep) got you on the phone, I take it you're actually in Atlantic Records' New York offices right now. 

MC: I am, I am. You know, I guess it's Hub Central. Where it all happens, I guess. 

BE: Is it buzzing with excitement? 

MC: Everything. Everything's exciting. I'm learning more and more about how this business is changing, which I'm clearly aware of, but…

BE: You're learning it first hand. 

MC: Of course, of course. 

BE: You guys just did Jimmy Kimmel's show a couple of days ago, right? 

MC: Yes. Absolutely. (hesitates) I think last week. (hesitates again) A week exactly, I think. 

BE: (laughs) It's all kind of a blur? 

MC: Yeah. No, it's good, it's good. 

BE: How was it? Are you actually on the talk-show circuit – as it were – right now? 

MC: Yeah, we're doing a bit of it. I don't know if you're aware, but the Honda Civic Tour got moved back a few weeks, so we're doing a little more press stuff, and flying around…which is all good, because I like coming to New York. Good friends, good people. You do a little stuff, and then you get to go out. So it's all good. 

BE: There you go. So the new album premiered pretty well for you guys. 

MC: Thank you, yeah, I agree. I was completely…it's very hard in this time right now, just because, y'know, record sales are just so different from where they've been, and they just keep changing, as far as the positioning of bands; it's hard with all the country and pop bands. A lot of that stuff, I don't really pay attention to that much. But everyone seemed really happy about it. I mean, for us, it was more from all the MySpace and emails about the record. That's really what did us over. But the number on the charts was great, too. 

BE: And it was produced by Butch Walker …  

MC: Uh-huh. 

BE: …who clearly has the magic touch as far as producing hook-filled pop/rock. 

MC: Yeah, yeah, absolutely, I would think so. 

BE: Now, were you guys fans of his work already? 

MC: Yeah, I mean, I grew up listening to Marvelous 3. 

BE: OK, yeah, I love that band! 

MC: Yeah, exactly. So I love Marvelous 3, and I liked the solo records, but I always felt like…well, Butch Walker was doing the skinny tie and the tight jeans thing when rap-rock was going on, so it was weird. He was just way before his time in the sense that his songs… you're either, “Who?” Or you're, like, “Yeah, yeah, that dude's fucking great!” Y'know what I mean? So the fact that we got to work with him was great. And he's made an amazing career for himself; he's been very smart about playing a certain game, and I respect him for that, but also I think that his latest album, with the Let's-Go-Out-Tonites, was a great record. I loved the songs on it, and everything else. So when I heard that…wow. And we just get along. I mean, everyone says this, but he's our bro. Like, for real. He's our friend. We get along very well. 

BE: What was he like in the studio? 

MC: Fast, man! He works like a…well, he's a nasty man! He just works very fast. We did the record in about 22 days. And he's done the whole shuffle of doing records long, and he's made a ton of his own records, and everything else, and I think, but…well, with Almost Here, we made the record just as fast, but it was more because of the budget. But with Butch, he was, like, “Well, listen, I like Almost Here, I like what you do live, so let's talk about the demos, and then let's just start recording.” And I think that, for a lot of it, he was right. He didn't want to change the band too much. With Almost Here, we had the success that, really, no one expected. I mean, we were barely signed to a label when we made that record, we had no management. It was basically just me and William, and the next thing you know (pauses). We did that whole thing for, like, 12 grand or something, and I bagged his guy James (Paul Wisner) to do the record, which he did, which is great. But now, here we are in the studio, we've got a great engineer, Butch Walker's sitting there, and I'm thinking, “Here we go, it's gonna take us four months to make this record,” or whatever. But, no, it was good. And I think that, as players, we kind of surprised ourselves, because we were a lot more prepared than we thought. It's one of those things where you don't know how tall you've grown if you see yourself in the mirror every day? And when you get in the studio, it's, like, “Wow, after two and a half years of touring non-stop, I'm much more comfortable as a guitar player!” And Butch would do really cool things where…well, I mean, a lot of producers have done this, but he'd say, “OK, well, we're just gonna run through it, so just stand up and play it like you'd play it onstage or in the rehearsal room. I just wanna see some sounds.” And we'd run the song, and a lot of times, he'd use that. We'd do a regular take of it, and he'd say, “Y'know, the first take was better.” I'm, like, “What do you mean?” And he'd say, “No, I was rolling on the practice take.” And that was cool, y'know what I mean? That not-overthinking-things really helped me out, because I'm much more methodical, and I'm at this age where I like to think about every decision we make, and I like to twist the arrangements of the songs and make sure, but I think Butch has been to the movies so many times that he helped me a lot. It was a good blend of just trusting your instincts. 

BE: Now, were there any songs with arrangements that did end up getting switched up in the studio? 

MC: Yeah, well, not so much with lyrics, but with some of the phrasing and stuff like that, because William has such respect for Butch, and Butch has the same for William. I think they worked really well together. Butch is not just a great vocalist, but he's got a knack for interesting melodies and also just good pop hooks. And for William, I think it was important to keep that blend. So I definitely think he was instrumental for William. Singing in the studio is a weird kind of thing, because it's not a very natural thing, compared to being on the stage in front of a crowd. We'd just gotten so used to that. There needs to be a vibe in the room. And that's what Butch… (pauses) I'm not sure if you've ever met Butch. 

BE: I've talked to him, but I've never met him. 

MC: OK, well, you know how there are some dudes who, when they walk into a room, they've just got a good vibe? Where you're, like, “This guy's cool. For some reason, I trust this dude with a lot.” And he's got that thing. And in the sense of the pop world where he does his thing, once I really started working with him, I could see why certain people would want to keep working with this guy. In music, a lot of times, it's the relationships that you have with each other. Like, myself and William, we trust each other so much. I trust his judgment, he trusts my judgment, and that's why we write so well together. And it's the same with Butch. But, I mean, it's the same with any partnership, really, be it business or art or whatever. 

BE: The one time I talked to Butch was when “Freak of the Week” was just getting big for the Marvelous 3, and he just struck me as the kind of guy who, if you met him, he'd immediately have his hand outstretched and be saying, “How ya doin'?” 

MC: Yeah, exactly! No, he is, he absolutely is. And he still goes out on the road, he still puts on a hell of a show. He's a hell of a guitar player, too. Nasty. 

BE: You guys just released “We've Got A Big Mess On Our Hands” as a single… 

MC: Yes. 

BE: …but as a 7-inch single! 

MC: Yes! 

BE: You do realize that you're a member of the generation that's supposed to ask, “What's vinyl?” 

MC: I know, I know. But, you know, it's a piece. I agree with you, and, trust me, we're playing both fronts, but I think it's more for people who want to collect things. I mean, it's weird, and I go back and forth on it, because you're absolutely right. On one hand, we're growing into this minimalistic society where kids just want an iPod, they want their songs, and they don't even want the artwork. Or if they do, they'll just download it off of iTunes. But, then, there's a piece of you…I mean, for me, the Smashing Pumpkins were the band for me where, even now, if I go into a record store and I find some weird single – like, we were in Germany and I found something or other – and I'll just get it. You know what I mean? I'm not like that with everyone, but there's that one particular band. And I'm not trying to put us on that level at all, but I would figure that if someone wanted to purchase something like that of ours, it's always good to have. 

BE: I actually got to talk to Gabe, Ryland, and Alex from Cobra Starship several weeks back… 

MC: Yes! 

BE: …and they were very psyched to hear Santi at that time, but they hadn't heard it yet. Have you heard from them about it since then? 

MC: Yeah, absolutely! I saw them just on Tuesday. We had a good time; we went out. With Gabe, we toured with (his former band) Midtown quite a bit, so I know Gabe, and I was also a fan of Midtown for awhile. Also, Butch Walker worked on their record! It's all twisted and very much incestual. But, yeah, Alex and Ryland are also great dudes, and they have heard it. I've always gotten along with all those guys…and we're gonna spend eight weeks together soon, so everyone's really excited. And Gabe…I don't know how your vibe was with him, but he's always just a riot, so I always have a good time with him. 

BE: Oh, yeah. And Ryland just couldn't believe that I wrote for Bullz-Eye.com. It's apparently been one of his favorite sites for awhile. 

MC: Oh, that's great, that's great! And we're all about it as well! Those dudes…I'm actually going to try and see them, but we've got to catch a flight at 8, so I don't know. It's funny: those dudes – Gabe, Ryland and Alex – they're the sweetest dudes, and we get along with them so well. We don't see each other too often, but when we do, it just snaps on. They're good dudes. 

BE: Like you said, the Honda Civic tour got pushed back a few weeks, but the new date is now good to go? 

MC: Yeah! Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Which is good, in a sense, with the weather being what it is. Where are you? 

BE: Norfolk, Virginia. You'll be here in, like, late May. 

MC: I hear you, man, I hear you. But a lot of the dates are in outside venues, and it's just been so cold everywhere. Well, at least, here in New York, anyway. 

BE: Hey, it's in the 40s here in Norfolk today. 

MC: Dude, it's so bad, my friend. I don't even know. So I'm glad it got pushed back, in a sense, because a lot of the pavilions are outdoors. And for the kids, I think it's great. It's kind of an after-school thing now. I think a lot of graduations for colleges are in the first week of May. But, y'know, to be honest with you, I've always said that the tour should be moved back, and that April was a weird month to be starting a summer tour. You know what I mean? It's that month where you're, like, what is this? What's April? You can't really do stuff outdoors. 

BE: It's too unpredictable. 

MC: Exactly. 

BE: So I went and checked out your Wikipedia entry, and it says that you once turned down an offer to join Fall Out Boy. True? 

MC: Well, I mean, “turned down”? (scoffs) I grew up with those dudes! I had another year of high school left, and they were talking about it, and Patrick used to just sing, and I knew Joe and Pete, and we joked about it, but I don't know that I really “turned it down.” I guess the cards just didn't fall in the right place at the time. Which is totally cool. (laughs) 

BE: By the way, your entry also says that you smoke Marlboros, like sushi, are fond of water slides, and that you used to be a lifeguard. (laughs) 

MC: (Seemingly not as amused.) Well, I mean, that's all correct. 

BE: Any other former jobs in the closet that you want to come clean about? 

MC: Uh, you know, I lifeguarded, like, every summer. I swam in high school, so that was kind of my jam; I could swim, and I had no problem being by water. I mean, I still don't, but these days, I don't so much have the time anymore. But, yeah, that's basically what I did. You know, I worked at The Gap for a quick second, but that didn't last too long. 

BE: In the pre-Academy days, most articles tend to describe you and William as being “musical rivals.” 

MC: Uh-huh. 

BE: Did you ever come close to a rumble? 

MC: Day to day, my friend. (laughs) No, when we were younger, we played shows…VFW shows, church basements. When we were growing up, Limp Bizkit was big, and all this other rap-rock kind of stuff, so we went down and saw all these punk rock bands. I don't know how punk rock they really were, but they were punk rock in the sense that they weren't on the radio with everything else. So we had our own little clique, which I guess has bubbled up to be emo now. This little scene that had been around in some form or other, now, you walk into a mall and the fashion has completely taken it over…which is as it should be. That's how trends bubble up and whatnot. But, yeah, I knew him from there, so we'd just go to shows together, and we were little salty kids that wanted to have bands. And, finally, I was just, like, “Hey, William, you wanna start a band with me?” And we did. And so far, so good. 

BE: I know it hasn't really been that long ago, but when you look back at your earliest recordings and compare them to what you've just done, how much growth do you see? 

MC: Oh, tons! Tons! I mean, some of the bands I was listening to then. The Pumpkins were always important to me, Weezer's Pinkerton was a big record for me and still is, and Clarity, by Jimmy Eat World. But the thing is, on this record, it was the Replacements and the Clash. It's weird, because I grew up in the '90s, so, obviously, a lot of grunge bands like STP, Pearl Jam, and obviously Nirvana, those were my jams, so in a weird way, I kind of miss the '80s. They were just too close. It's like kids today are, like, “The Smashing who?” You know what I mean? They're just not classic yet. It takes a second to get to a place where you'll say, “OK, you should definitely listen to this.” So I think now, with the Replacements and the Clash and the Jam, even early U2 stuff, I think that influenced my playing on Santi. Just the attitude, and, well, I was really getting behind it, for some reason. When I was a kid, I saw the Get-Up Kids and the Promise Ring and Alkaline Trio and Cursive or whatever, it was the same vein when I started latching onto these punk bands from the late '70s and early '80s. And that changed my tastes. That's growth, I guess. And as a songwriter, I listen to more and more music now; with the iPod, everybody's got a soundtrack to their life, so when we're on the bus, I listen to a lot of music. 

BE: Talking about bands who've influenced you, do you have a favorite obscure band that you like to champion? 

MC: Obscure band…you know, I like this band called…I don't know how obscure they are now, but they're called Mew? 

BE: Yeah! 

MC: Yeah, I like them a lot…but I don't know how obscure they are. I mean, I'm in New York, so there's gotta be something way fucking cooler than that that I don't know about yet. But, yeah, I like them. And I'm trying to think: what else have I been listening to? Again, I don't know how big they are here now, but I like Phoenix. I like Phoenix a lot. I think a lot more people should listen to them. They're good. I also like a lot of the British stuff now. Like, I like the new Bloc Party record. It reminded me of (Jimmy Eat World's) Clarity a lot. If I was 15 or 16, this would be my jam. I would be listening to this all the time…which I am, anyway. 

BE: So, um, are you talking about Tom Conrad's departure at all yet? 

MC: Oh, sure, yeah. 

BE: What was the story with that? 

MC: Well, I mean, we went through a bit of a…it's funny, it's a bit of a cliché, but we went through a bit of a dark place for the band for a quick second. Now, it sounds so trivial, but at the time, we weren't getting along too well. The Warped Tour was a hard tour, kind of a messed up tour. You basically play for half an hour, you don't know when you're going to play, and we were kind of a band who was on the fence on that tour, in the sense of what we do. Which is fine, because the Warped Tour has changed over the years. We did the tour, and it's a great vehicle, but The Academy Is… isn't exactly…we aren't exactly a Warped Tour kind of band. So that was a little part of it. We were ready to make another record, though. Obviously, we signed onto the tour, and everyone's going, “This is a great opportunity,” but we're out there and everyone's going, “We really should just go make another record.” But you're signed up, and you get into that mode of touring, and I think William went down a little bit. It was just too much. And I think Tom…well, see, Tom never recorded anything with us. He joined the band after Almost Here was done, so he was always sort of a touring guy in the sense of my relationship with him. And, then, afterwards, we got off that tour and there were some problems, the vibes weren't right, we had a talk, and he left. And, y'know, I don't know what kind of terms it's on. I think he's salty. I mean, I'm not really sure what's the deal. But, see, I knew Michael (Guy Chislett, Conrad's replacement), and Michael played with Butch, and I met Michael at the “Slow Down” video that we did for Almost Here. I sat down with the dude, we just talked about music, we played guitar. It's funny. I was with a friend that night, and I go back, we're shooting this video, and I go, “Dude, that dude Michael is awesome. I know I'm gonna play guitar with him someday. I just don't know when it's going to be.” And I've just kept in touch with him about records, so when Butch was kind of slowing down with his thing…see, Michael's not just a good guitar player, but he's also got good taste, good intuitions, everything else. And when we started to make Santi, I called him and I was, like, “You should come out to Chicago, because I want you to hear this stuff that William and I are writing.” And he liked the band – he was a fan of Almost Here, I sent him a few demos – and he said, “Yeah, yeah, yeah!” And, then, it was about 10 days, and he came out here, and we just kinda started playing and stuff, and he said, “I really like this!” And it was weird, because it was like he was the guitar player I never got to play with, but, now, finally he's here! It was so cool. And we had that whole honeymoon period, where you play with someone and the chemistry's in the room, with no heavy bullshit stuff going on, and it's, like, “Man, this is so great! These songs are coming out so easy!” And, then, finally, he was, like, “Dude, let's just do this! I want to go on tour, and I want to do this!” So I said, “Great!” So that's kind of that. 

BE: And my last question. 

MC: Go ahead. 

BE: Based on the comments left on your MySpace page, I have some real concerns about the spelling abilities of some of your fans. 

MC: (laughs) 

BE: Do you ever see some of those and just go, “Can I buy you a copy of SpellCheck?” 

MC: Absolutely. Without a doubt. It's funny, but with this texting generation, and these slangs, and these shortcuts, and everything else. Well, because I'm not exactly on IM, like, ever, some of the abbreviations and crazy stuff, I'm, like, “I don't know what that means! What does that stand for?” But I think you're right. I think you're absolutely right. 

BE: OK, well, it's been a pleasure talking to you. 

MC: Cool! You, too, man! 

BE: Hopefully, I'll be able to meet up with Cobra Starship again when this tour comes through Virginia Beach, so maybe I can meet up with ya'll, too. 

MC: Absolutely! Please stop by, say “hello,” and whatever. I'm sure we'll be up to no good with the Cobra guys. Take it easy!

of old laptops and even older plastic figures

My laptop has finally died :( I was able to get most of the files off it but still.... 2007 to 2024, RIP you lasted a long time, wished you made it just a little longer... to 2027 just so it would be a nice round number (posting this from my basement computer which I think WILL last even longer due to it being ice cold down here year round).

Work Friend has really been goin' thru it on-and-off the past 2 months so I had told him I would like to celebrate and give cards and gifts for random holidays that no one else does... like Arbor Day... but this being Leap Day was the perfect opportunity. I found a plastic bin full of old stuff of mine that hadn't been opened since 2000. There were 2 small Gundam "robots" inside (yes yes I know, "mobile suits"), and since he collects robots (especially Transformers and GoBots) I wrapped them up and wrote a card and gave it to him. He told me I was crazy for doing so, but at the end of the work day he sat in the break room and opened it and set them up on the table in front of him :)

You know how as a young kid we all have the one comfort toy we keep with us? His was a robot he kept in his pocket. These Gundams are also pocket-sized.

Other men were jealous and couldn't understand why I gave them away instead of keeping them or selling them, which proves they don't understand anything at all.

im goin thru my folder of favorite edits of the ghost files era and MAN. my heart is so full and happy right now!! im so happy that ghost files was able to bring so many people together!! (hell, its the reason i found this space in the first place!) im just so happy and greatful that ghost files exists and im so excited for season 2. its gonna be a banger. (also im hoping they tour again, that was incredible and i really dont wanna miss out on a meet n greet if that happens again too. PLUS now i can go with all my friends!!! becuase now i have a whole group of friends that watch watcher!!) fnajckksdjjs im so excited for what the future holds :D

Mondo having a thing about coating Taka with hickeys and Taka having a thing about very much enjoying the process is a good headcanon I've seen used several times, in both fic and art.

I see it causing an issue for them at least once.

Kiyotaka has the syllabus and upcoming events memorized before he and Mondo have a "session" so he won't be caught broadcasting his love life unwelcomed. Besides, he always fears he'll be accused of being hedonistic and immoral just for using some free time to feel wanted by the man he loves.

Meanwhile, Mondo knows to keep it below the uniform collar, but that's a lot of fair game there. After one night where they get carried away, Taka's torso from the base of the neck down looks like a leopard. Taka looks like he lost a fight with an octopus. But it's fine because a)Taka wanted it, and b)he can still look presentable in public with them covered.

But, the next day at gym, the class is told the schedule had to be rearranged and everyone is to head up to the pool. Taka instantly panics.

As everyone starts walking, he grabs Mondo's arm and pulls him to the back of the group.

"Mondo," he hisses, "I can't go to the pool!"

"Why?"

Taka fully despairs for a brief second. "If I take off my uniform, everyone will see the marks you've made!"

The caveman part of Mondo's brain makes his chest want to swell with a mixture of pride and possession, but it plummets down to become a lead ball in his stomach the instant he notices the unshed tears and fear in Taka's large eyes.

"It's okay. S'okay, I'll figure somethin out. Let's just get goin," Mondo promises him.

He can't let Taka feel humiliated. He mostly trusts his classmates by now--Taka would never have another middle school experience--but this wasn't a couple hickeys to get teased over and laugh off. Their peers' first reaction might be to get Taka a bodyguard and Mondo a muzzle. The teacher might investigate; Taka's dad might be called. Mondo shakes away the mental image of a mortified Taka and tries to actually problem solve.

He couldn't picture Taka sitting the period out on the bleachers and risk being a bad class leader. Taka could lie about feeling sick or needing somewhere else to be to work on his Talent, but he wouldn't. Taka wouldn't forgive him for pulling the fire alarm either. He didn't know of any clubs Taka could help at this hour. Would anything at the pool hide him when they got there?

Mondo's head snaps up with an idea and he walks faster to catch up with the classmate who made swimming pools her domain. "Asahina!"

Hina stops hopping around excitedly next to Sakura and turns to address him. "Mondo? What's up?"

He starts to whisper while also glaring at any classmates daring to curiously rubberneck. "I need a favor. Do ya have one of them, like, swim shirts? Y'know, surfers and shit wear 'em?"

"A rash guard?"

"Sure."

Hina frowns, apologetic. "No, I never thought to bring one here since the pool is indoors." She gives him a once-over. "And I'm not sure we'd be the same size."

"It's not...for me." Mondo rubs the back of his neck anxiously. He makes sure to keep his voice low. "It's for Taka."

"Since when does Ishimaru prefer a rash guard while swimming?" Kyoko asks, suddenly appearing on Mondo's other side, startling him.

"Holy fuck! Who who asked you?!" he yelps.

"You're not as quiet as you think you are," she helpfully warns them. "Here, let's walk to the side a bit."

The three step to the outside of the pack of students to continue talking a bit more covertly.

"Now, Oowada, what's this about?" Kyoko asks, eyes sharp.

Yeah!" Hina loudly whispers back. "Is Taka all right? Him asking for cover is concerning, ya know!"

Mondo's defensive annoyance threatens to flare up. "He's fine, but he can't go in the pool today. I can't tell ya why, so don't ask."

Maybe if another teacher needed help, but Mondo didn't know of any and unless one walked down the hall, he couldn't beg them. Or the headmaster!

"Oi!" Mondo's outburst causes Hina to jump. He lowers his voice once again, "Kirigiri! I need ya to ask yer dad if he has anythin he can call for Taka to work on. Like, now, for the whole period."

Kyoko's cool eyes narrow at him. He knows she's still trying to suss out his motives.

"If it were just for you, I'd demand more of an explanation, but this is for Ishimaru, right?" Even as she asks, she has her phone out, texting the headmaster. Mondo catches a glimpse of her text starting with "URGENT" and feels a wave of appreciation.

Finished, she looks from her phone back to Taka, still uncharacteristically silent and walking yards behind everyone else. She notes how he's hugging himself and darting his unfocused eyes around.

"Hmm." Her hand is up to her chin in thought. "Well, all we can do is wait for my father to answer me or make an announcement on his own. I could always just lie and say my father requested him."

"Y'know damn well he'd hate that and give us both detention when he found out," Mondo gripes. He understands why Taka refuses a little dishonest help, but it's still frustrating as hell sometimes.

"Yes," she agrees, her voice was as level and confident as always, "but that depends on how much he'd rather be tricked than show off your love bites."

"Right? Damn."

Hina, still close by and listening, covered her mouth to muffle a giggle.

Then Mondo's steps faltered. "HEY!"

His shout echoed around the hall, causing a few students to eyeball them. Makoto was clutching his chest, about ready to imitate a fainting goat.

Kyoko didn't so much as blink though. "It's as if you forget who I am. But don't worry, I'll take all the blame for lying to Ishimaru if it comes to that."

"Thanks," Mondo sighs out. "If you two didn't help, I was gonna pay Hiro to predict a pool disaster big enough to stall."

That causes Hina and Kyoko to realize the severity of the situation might be more than simple awkwardness.

"You know Hiro would try to charge you, like, hundreds of dollars for that," Hina says, worried. "Maybe thousands. Is Taka really that embarrassed by a hickey?"

Mondo swallows thickly but doesn't answer. He feels incredibly guilty. He feels like a danger to Taka's reputation for a new reason than the usual ones that sometimes haunt him. He knows hormones and his lack of self-control are a bad mix, but add in Taka enthusiastically praising his mouth, and he has zero hope of restraint.

They arrive at the changing rooms for everyone to switch into their swimsuits before going to the pool. The other students file inside while Mondo, Hina, Kyoko, and the trailing Taka hang back.

When Taka stops in front of them, his wide eyes finally focus on Mondo. He glances at the girls then says, hopefully, "Any, um, ideas?"

Mondo worries Taka is going to have a panic attack with the way he's breathing and clutching his blazer closed. As if the marks were magically visible through his uniform shirt too.

Kyoko brings her phone screen up to her face to check for a reply, then shakes her head at Mondo. Hina wrings her hands.

Deciding he's just going to kidnap Taka for the rest of the day and risk his boyfriend never speaking to him again, Mondo starts to grab Taka's arm.

The P.A. system squeaks on. "ISHIMARU, YOUR ASSISTANCE IS NEEDED IN THE HEADMASTER'S OFFICE, PLEASE!"

All four friends sag with relief. Hina does a little cheer, gives them a thumbs up and skips into the girl's changing room. Kyoko nods at Mondo's thankful expression and follows her inside.

Taka runs his fingers thru his hair, laughs bubbling out of him. He has no idea what had happened to save him, but he wasn't going to question it just now. He squeezes Mondo's wrist once with his left hand and smiles to convey he was never upset with his partner about the situation. Then he proceeds to speed-walk to the office.

Mondo's frayed nerves want him to break the rules and embrace Taka, but his impulsive actions have caused enough problems today. He turns to go get changed for the pool, his caveman pride starting to return after helping to protect his Kiyotaka.

Following this, Taka didn't let them have another "session" for a month, and when he did he made contingency plans to be nowhere near the pool for a full week.

[11- Kiyoko’s Determination! Spread Your Wings Poromon!]

Dashing thru Tokyo’s streets past midnight wasn’t a very common ritual for Kiyoko, and her parents wouldn’t have liked it either. But she wanted to protect that Poromon with her own life, mostly because Poromon had saved her before and had gotten hurt thanks to that.

“Poromon, are you alright?”

“I… I am” he replied “B-but…”

“Don’t worry! Daichi is chasing the evil shadow as we talk! Also, I’m a great runner!”

“Why are you risking your life…? I need to find the Chosen… Children…”

Realizing that they had a good distance from the shadow, Kiyoko turned on the first alley she found and hid there in the shadows. She might be a great runner (as she stated) but she had to catch some breath sometime.

“What a night” she sighed, sitting on the ground with Poromon on her lap now “Mom and Dad are secret heroes, my nanny is a digimon, and my brother has a digimon partner… What’s next?”

“You… You shouldn’t talk like those were a bad thing” he frowned.

“I’m more like surprised though” she confessed, “Like, not everyone has a wild night filled with lots of twists like I am having right now.”

“I see…”

She heard some noises, and felt very nervous. So was Poromon, still injured… The shadow was in the alley’s entrance. And Kiyoko was so sure there was no other way to escape.

But then she heard a explosion and when she discreetly looked to the entrance… She saw Ulforce’s silhouette.

“Back off, and reveal yourself!”

Kiyoko and Poromon heard Daichi’s voice.

“I don’t know who are you or why are you chasing that Poromon and my sister, but I won’t allow you to hurt them!”

“Use your digivice to scan it” Natsu informed the boy “We might learn who they are in one second!”

Daichi took the D-TimeRune and scanned the area, making the shadow reveal themself by digi-realizing in front of the trio.

“I gotcha!” the boy exclaimed “Huh, a Guilmon? But… Why would…”

“No questions!” Ulforce roared, then aimed with his V-bracelet on the foe digimon “V-Plasma shoot!” he shot a laser from the bracelet, but Guilmon dodged “Ugh, stop moving!!”

“It makes no sense…” Daichi mused “Why would a Guilmon chase Kiyoko and a Poromon?”

“Guilmon species can be dangerous” Natsu explained “They hold a dangerous power, so might it be running out of control right now.”

“STOP MOVING YOU FIRE BREATH LIZARD!”

“... Do you think my dad sent them here?”

“OUCH OUCH!! WHY DID YOU SPILL A FIREBALL AT ME!?”

“Hmm… Probably?” Natsu shrugged “Though I do not know. Daisuke is not acting like himself, I guess. He would’ve attacked your sister by himself or sending Vee for the job.”

Ulforce was thrown at them and Natsu caught the blue digimon before he hit her.

Guilmon snorted fire from their nostrils and dashed to the trio’s direction… Only to get hit by a rock thrown by Kiyoko.

“Get away from my brother you punk!”

The enemy roared and stared at her, then shot a Fireball against Kiyoko from their mouth. Poromon shoved the girl to the floor, losing a few feathers.

“Kiyoko!!” Daichi yelled.

His digivice turned on and sent a light to the girl and the Poromon digimon. It materialized a device just like Daichi’s except with the crimson color.

“What’s this thing?” Kiyoko exclaimed, but noticed Guilmon charging for another fireball at her direction.

“Kiyoko!” Daichi called her, his voice of tone became serious now “Grab that thing and scan Poromon’s data! Then, scan the back of your hand by saying ‘Scan DigiRune’ and activate it by ‘Load Evolution’ voice command!”

“Right!” she nodded, took impulse from the ground and jumped to grab the new D-TimeRune. She dodged another fireball attack and threw Poromon to the air. Pointed the digivice at him and scanned his data. A crimson paw had appeared on the screen.

Kiyoko scanned the back of her right hand with the digivice’s screen.

“Scan DigiRune!” [ Scan Completed ]

Then, she pointed at Poromon:

“Load Evolution!”

A light, just like that time Daichi evolved Ulforce for the first time, blasted from the device and covered Poromon’s body. The light blinded Guilmon and everyone there.

Poromon evolve! Hawkmon!

The light revealed a bird-like digimon. Not so different from Miyako’s partner, but this one had a headscarf with two feathers on the side of his head.

“... So, you will keep chasing me and hurting whoever is on your way?” the Hawkmon said with a serious tone “Tsk tsk. Come, now that I’ve recovered a bit of my energy… I can send you back to where you come from!”

“He’s so cool!!” Kiyoko screamed, hands together, one holding the D-TimeRune “H-Hawkmon, give them a lesson! Go go!!”

“Thanks, but my name is…” He took one of the head feathers and threw at Guilmon like a knife. it hit the digimon, causing a small cut on their face, “... Is Captain.”

When the Guilmon approached, Hawkmon went on high speed to hit them with a chop attack on their back. Guilmon tried to hit the cocky bird with a flaming slash from their claws, and Hawkmon dodged it, applied a kick on them. Dizzily, Guilmon tried to hit it with a headbutt but no success.

“Now V-mon!” Captain shouted, making the blue digimon hiss after recovering his conscious.

“I AIN’T AN ORDINARY V-MON” Ulforce shot a laser from his bracelet, hitting the dizzy Guilmon and knocking them out “I’M THE GRAND HERO OF THE DIGITAL WORLD, ULFORCE!”

Natsu captured the Guilmon with a pink plasma bubble while Ulforce was throwing tantrums for the audacity of that Hawkmon from calling him by ‘V-mon’ and Daichi went to make sure Kiyoko hadn’t gotten hurt in battle.

“Are you ok, Kiyoko?” Daichi frowned “Sorry I lost the track of you and had to… Hover over the area.”

“I’m fine, I’m fine!” She nodded “I’m strong and not a damsel in distress. So I guess we need to go home before mom…”

Something moved very quickly on the horizon. Enough to make Daichi get distracted by it and ignore Kiyoko’s rumbling.

“... Are you hearing me?”

“Sorry, Kiyoko… Go home, tell mom I will be late again. Natsu please take Kiyoko, Captain and this digimon back to home. Let officer Ichijouji know about the attack, and see if you can get a clue please.”

“Where did they go?” Captain asked.

“No idea, let’s go home…”

When they had arrived home, Miyako was staring at the building, plus the restaurant. Inside was a mess, Daisuke would’ve fainted if he had seen his precious hardwork damaged like that.

“Did a horde of Mammothmon invade the restaurant!?”

“Mom…” Kiyoko approached, with her digimon partner next to her “Some digimon attacked me.”

“What!?” She looked at the mysterious Hawkmon by Kiyoko’s side “Who are you?”

“He was hurt!” the girl said “He was a small Poromon who had been chased by that Guilmon Natsu is keeping an eye on!”

“Thank you for protecting my daughter. And you did the right thing, to protect someone in danger. Your caring probably helped him to evolve.”

“... I got a thing. This thing” and Kiyoko showed the digivice “It appeared in front of me and I… Evolved Captain with it.”

“A digivice…?” Miyako blinked “It’s… It’s different from the usual ones.”

“Do you know what it is?”

“I expected to have this talk with Daichi first” now that sigh wasn’t a good signal “Hawkmon, keep an eye on the surroundings I don’t want anyone else to hear us.”

“Right” Hawkmon nodded, but Captain tilted his head.

“So… That digimon is… Your partner?” the pirate-like bird asked.

“Yes, he is” Miyako began “I was a 6th grade student from Elementary School when I first met him.”

“So you’re partnered with mx. Hawkmon, mom!?”

Miyako nodded, then continued: “A long time ago, the Digital World had been threatened by the evil forces and manipulated a Chosen Child. Your father and I, alongside Iori, became partnered with digimon to fight that menace.”

“So, you’re one of the Chosen Children” Captain mused “I’ve been looking for ya. I have an important message for them all.”

“A message?” Miyako repeated “Are you part of Roar of Freedom, by any chance?”

“What. No, no! I’m from File Island” He panicked “It’s a message for help. Lupinmon’s troops are trying to close the gates. If they close the digital gate, it will be bad for everyone.”

“Huh, why?” Kiyoko asked.

“Because there’s humans living in the Digital World too” Miyako responded “Unlike my days of school, when only the Chosen Children were allowed there. Now, a lot of people partnered with a digimon lives there because couldn’t bring their digimon to this world.”

“Yes, and those people aren’t actually ‘Chosen Children’ and they do not own a digivice for that.”

“That’s strange… Wait, does it mean…”

The kid was short, wearing a beanie, shades, a blue (?) jacket with a black shirt and an orange scarf. Gloves, black pants, golden anklets and black shoes.

The kid showed a D-TimeRune, but this one was orange? Or red? Daichi couldn’t see that well… No wait, it was a darker shade of orange, he was sure now. And the digivice had a symbol on it… A sun ?

Ulforce got up and glanced at the possible foes: “WHAT, YOU HAVE A DIGIVICE TOO!? AND THE CREST OF COURAGE!?”

“Scan DigiRune” The kid scanned the back of the hand with the digivice “Execute Evolution.”

That Agumon got covered by a light, evolving to Greymon, but… Was it blue!? Again, the dark made details unable to be seen. The troll kid then got caught by the Greymon’s hands gently.

“It evolved!?” Daichi exclaimed.

“Hey will you keep impressed or will you catch me?” he smirked again. His partner started to run “Cya losers! Heheh!”

“... Ulforce, evolve.”

After XV-mon appeared from the evolution light, Daichi climbed Ulforce’s back and they flew after the Greymon.

The Sergio-Divergent AU is my Baby 😭 it started out as two separate aus, actually! The first one was an "all the crusaders live" au and the second was a "joseph had a son who is josuke's father" au because I could not and tbh still can't accept Joseph cheating on the legend that is Suzi. I realized there was no reason to have them as two separate aus, so they became one.

I have a more detailed page about it all if you're on desktop, but I'll give you the quick rundown! Years after Holly is born, Joseph and Suzi have another son, Sergio! He spends a lot of his childhood with Lisa Lisa because everyone is super busy, and bc of that he gets the whole 411 about his family's history and Hamon. Joseph doesn't let Lisa Lisa send his kid through Hell Climb Pillar, so Sergio and Lisa Lisa agree on music as a good way to practice Hamon. He becomes a huge music kid because of this, which leads to him becoming really good friends with Sadao! (much to joseph's despair lol) He is mcShooken when Jotaro is born, and spends many weekends and school vacations in Japan with the Kujos bc he adores the little guy.

Aside from having Funky Breathing Powers, he has a relatively normal life until he graduates from uni! He has a mild existential crisis, but Sadao comes in to save the day and gets him a few gigs over in Japan. This is where Sergio meets Tomoko, and they hit it off really well (after Holly is able to convince him that yes, she is flirting with him lol).

There's a golden year or two where things are nice. Tomoko graduates from uni, and Sergio gets a nice residency for his compositions! They get engaged! But, things go haywire when Tomoko is like bro.. I am jus DYIN?? And they rush to the hospital to find out!! AHHH the bitch has been pregnant the whole time and her baby said yo I'm fuckin outtie! (I wasn't entirely keen on this concept at first, but this exact thing happened to my sister so I will let it be) Cue the age of madness, in which Sergio and Tomoko try to juggle their jobs, their upcoming wedding, and their newborn.

Things get even madder when Joseph rings to be like, "Heyyy... I do not mean to alarm you but we found Dio's coffin and, uh, he's not in it lol." Sergio is deeply alarmed by this bc Dio was like, the monster under his bed AND in his closet as a kid. He filed the fear away growing up because Dio was dead and couldn't hurt anyone anymore, but now!! Aha! He tries to keep sensible about it, and to his credit, he does for about a year! But then Dio makes his thotty thotty trip to Japan to go crazy go stupid with Giorno's mother and Sergio, a Joestar and big experienced Hamon user, feels his presence deeply. (Dio also senses him [and Holly, Jotaro, and Josuke but he has no idea lol]) All pretense is thrown out the window, Sergio flips his lid because not Only is dio back... but hE'S IN JAPAN AHH.

There's a mild lapse in logic here because it'd be safe to assume that Dio's in Japan to kill all of them? But right now Sergio's just like, he's here to kill ME (and then everyone else. The idea rn is that Dio's coming for him first bc he poses the largest threat, but ahh idk.) Anyhow, Sergio has a mild meltdown about it and postpones the wedding because he doesn't want to run the risk of making Tomoko a widow. Tomoko is not pleased by all of this and is like bro.. you've gotta go to Tibet and get better at fighting with Hamon, I'll go live with my dad in the meantime.

So he goes to Tibet! I need to rework this section a bit, so I won't write too much about it. But! His stand, Golden Prophet, manifests here + he is directed to Abdul by one of Abdul's childhood friends! (This is messy to read, sorry! This is an artifact from before the rework, and I haven't addressed it yet ahh) So he goes to Egpyt, and becomes good buds with Abdul as he learns how to use GP better. The whole time, he's been having the migraine and nightmare of his Life because Dio is also in Egypt! Confident (and perhaps too confident) in his abilities, he sets out to kill the family scourge once and for all. However, he's intercepted by a particularly destructive stand user, Suad, whose stand circumvents his own. He ends up suspended in mid-air by a pole through his lung, which. :( He freaks out for a hot moment bc he Knows there's no way out, and that he won't get to go home and marry Tomoko or help her raise Josuke. In the mania, he has a moment of lucidity and realizes nobody knows Dio's whereabouts except for him... So, he uses Golden Prophet to make one final spirit audio call to his dad, and spills all the beans. With his final breaths, he urges Joseph to seek out Abdul and also make sure Tomoko and their son are well supported.

The stand user, Suad, comes back into consciousness during this phone call and realizes that Sergio is not as horrible as Dio made him out to be, and that he's literally just a Dude. He's just a dad. Wracked with guilt bc she is also just a parent trying to secure a future for her child, Suad defects and seeks Abdul out herself. Abdul is familiar with some of Dio's stand users, but Suad was one of them and knows More. She tells him everything she knows + acts as one of his informants.

This is all set-up for the "All the Crusaders Survive" part of the AU. Joseph is way more cautious going into Egypt because it already claimed his son's life. The Speedwagon Foundation is way more present in Cairo, which is fundamental to Kakyoin's survival. The rest of the AU is very long and basically just follows everyone in the aftermath of the crusade and beyond!

skylar mccoy is born with desire so deep in her being it leads her to do things she does not want nor understand. above all else, she wants to be free. this does not often line up to the situations she is found in.

her childhood is a mystery hidden in plain sight. her first memory is that field. they lived in a pretty home, nice and big and suited for one hank mccoy. there were always people to be around and her father was always there for her.

born to the silver of the moon, on the summer solstice, are the mccoy twins, famous beyond themselves. hank’s little science experiments. their first cries echoed against the cold walls of the lab and the warm arms of a beast that was not a beast.

when she finds that field, she’s six. it’s the only thing she remembers, and later, the only thing she remembers vividly. how it was filled with flowers. it smelt wild. like the modernization hadn’t ever thought to touch it, like it never would dare. and when she is six years old, she is in that field again. it’s close enough to her home that she can get back quick, but far enough that she has to memorize the path.

skylar is much older when the particular memory of meeting him for the first time comes back. but when she had first saw him, ugly and ferocious, she growled, a low thing that vibrated her bones. she thought he was an animal, and he would stalk in the opposite direction at her tone.

whether he was an animal or not, that was up to debate. but that he stood his ground was not.

victor creed was on a mission for the hand when he found her. skylar was alone and little, and everything he could hope for. for skylar didn’t look much human either. she was clawed and fanged and her ears pointed. she fought with urges that were not those that came from the twenty-first century.

she is amazing and intuitive and smart beyond her years, but she does not realize that he’s taking repertoire until he’s baiting her. he steals her and gives her a new identity. after that, skylar mccoy disappears. artemis creed takes her place.

victor makes himself the only figure in her young life. everything she does, it depends on him. he orders: to act, to think, to breathe.

artemis, back when it was still artemis, thinks that being with him, of running, living in the woods, it’s an awful lot like being free. she’s not given a home again. she is given a leader. follow him, do what he wants, or else.

she’s seven when she realizes that she is not going back. by the time she is seven, she’s learned the definition of abuse in absolutely chilling detail. she learns, then, survival.

artemis learns something very important about herself. she might be the girl who can’t look people in the eye anymore, who flinches when doors slam, who writes up schemes in her head of the various ways she can bring down her father. she learns that when it came to kill or be killed, she was always going to choose kill.

victor tells her often that she is made for him. he is the reason for her being. artemis, over that next year, her first year with him, kills all her memories of that house in the open, of that father who was a father. of this soul she shared ━ thoughts, tired eyes, a blood curse. she forgets because forgetting is easier.

artemis has a problem, victor always tells her after she does something that ‘ makes ‘ him beat her. ( that will always be her second memory: her, trying to bring herself to her knees. victor, smiling cruelly down at her, hand dripping of blood. )

she can’t obey, he tells her. artemis spits blood and smiles. she’s always been free, she tells him. all her wit gets her is another hit. victor tells her he should be more like victoria.

artemis learns that she is not a girl. she’s the animal her body wants her to be. the claws, and the fangs, and the ears. victor does not care about her intelligence. he cares about how much power she can pack into a punch. how much force it takes her to rip someone’s throat with her teeth. how easily she can sneak up on an enemy.

he’s not the perfect teacher. if she does not get it on the first try, he starves her. or hits her. or anything, really. what he makes up for in intelligence, he has in spades for creativity. but artemis is the perfect student, though.

she meets this perfect ‘ victoria ‘ when she is nine. she, victor tells her, is what you’re going to be. ( skylar does not ask: blank ? caged ? raw ? ) she looks up at her, and artemis thinks to herself that her and victoria, despite being sisters, do not look very much alike.

sisters & not alike. it stands out to her. it feels wrong. 

she wonders about victoria sometimes, after that, when their paths cross again. she grows bitter, in this way she does not want, that she’s second-rate. how can she spend all her time with this man & still not be the best ?

( because she is free, she is free, she is free. she is still skylar mccoy. she has people looking for her. she never learned to listen. her tongue runs before her. his violence can not degrade her spirit. )

when artemis is fourteen, though she does not know that she is fourteen, her father has left her alone in the city and tells her to not return to him until night. this is not out of character of him. artemis, always, comes back to him.

she had wondered at first, why she did it, but the answer was easy. if she didn’t, victor would kill her. she wasn’t his perfect daughter, she was the one that he ‘ saved, ‘ the one he was trying to fix of her own crimes of humanity.

she wanders until she finds a diner and walks inside. she looks as she always does. dirty and wide-eyed, but enough like some other homeless city kid that it does not make people turn.

she orders a soda because that’s the only thing she has enough money for, and sits and waits. the news is on the tv in front of her, so it’s with that she occupies her time. victor doesn’t tell her about things like those. he keeps her shrouded in a bubble. he tells her that people are poison. that anyone but him cannot be trusted, because they’ll lie to girls like her.

she does not have a reason to not believe him, but she is a smart girl, so she knows she also does not have a reason to.

the news roll on and on. it’s mundane. they talk about robberies and jumpings, of people bleeding to death in alleys and on cold linoleum floors. she thinks there are much worse ways to die. the man whose throat she had slashed with her claws two days ago, whose blood was black, whose eyes were wide open the entire time.

then, they talk about something else.  ❝ it’s been eight years to the day, ❞ the news anchor says, voice both sympathetic and void, for it has to be, she thinks. ❝ since prodigy child skylar mccoy, half the famous mccoy twins, went missing from her home in upstate new york. there have been dozens of reports all across the world, but nothing has come up with an answer to where she disappeared. her father, doctor henry mccoy released ― ❞

artemis does not hear the rest. her entire body goes rigid. it sparks something within her that was diminished long ago. the names, so familiar, and as was the story. she feels disoriented and confused, and like she can’t breathe.

artemis drops her few soiled bills in front of her and flees from the diner and throws up right there on the sidewalk. a concerned woman comes up to her, but when artemis growls, she backs away.

she does not remember, not right away, but there’s a part of her that thinks she knows, now. she takes this realization with startling calmness. artemis finds herself walking back to the cabin they have made up stay in. by the time she gets there, it is dark.

the walk clears her head. being in the forest makes her feel better. artemis doesn’t burst into the cabin, demanding answers. she’s too smart for that. she comes in quietly and goes to the space on the floor that victor had allowed her to sleep on. she makes a plan.

artemis, before she goes to sleep that night, figures out three things. three things, that she knows to be irrevocably true. firstly, she was the missing skylar mccoy. second, victor creed was the man who had taken her. third, she was going home, wherever that may be.

it does not happen in the snap of a few months. she needs time. it’s three years until she’s managed to find her opportunity. by then, she is another asset of the hand, officially, though victor is still with her every step.

if she is the weapon, he is the hand wielding her.

she thinks, in part, the time it took her is not just because of the plan. it is also because, deep down, in this undeniable way, she was scared to leave him. he was all she knew. her memories had not come back yet.

when she realizes this, it comes with something else, too. why had she been scared to leave him ? because he had caged her. she was no longer free. she had never been free but had just convinced herself that she was.

so, the plan commences, then, days later, for once and for all. they’re on a mission and skylar pretends to slip up, to fall in battle. she lets herself be brutalized to the brink of death.

victor kills the man who does it, but it’s too late. she lays on the ground as he stands above her. his voice is unapproving and angry.  ❝ a waste, ❞ he says, as her eyes flutter shut. she hears as her breathing slows. victor’s footsteps leave.

skylar, for one terrifying moment, thinks that her plan will actually fail. that she will really die. that getting away from him will be her end. but then she’s being swept into darkness with the lasting thought that, at least, victor will not eat her body.

when she wakes up, it’s to a new world. it must be days later, or at least that’s how it feels. her wounds are mostly healed. she must’ve not been hit in any organs or arteries, then. if she had, she’d be dead. ( it’s just another thing skylar never told victor about. )

she brings herself to her feet. she feels it again. freedom. victor thinks she’s dead. he won’t be coming for her anytime soon ; when he does, she will be protected. she lets out a giddy laugh as she starts to walk, weak and hungry, toward the main road. she walks into the first store she sees and tells them her name and then she asks for a phone.

it’s at the police station that she meets her family again. 

identical eyes met one another. margot. the one who made it. they stand together, arms wrapped around each other. skylar, dirty & beaten, and impossibly, unbelievably alive.

as soon as hank sees her, he cries and she finds herself doing so too, though she has trouble understanding why. 

she tells them a quiet voice that she knew that they looked for her. she tells them she’s sorry. they don’t want to hear it.

she goes back to the house she grew up in. her memories from before are fuzzy, but they come back with time. people re-introduce themselves to her, and sometimes she replies with a memory, and sometimes nothing comes.

the only one that she remembers is margot. or maybe remembers is the wrong word. she’s trying, but it comes easy with her. like she was made to know her. they will never be so close to another being as they were.

margot is always going to be her favorite hiding place. a secret she never wanted to tell.

it had always been that for her. margot was always there. she didn’t remember her the right way, but she was still a fixture. in dreams, flashes of memories, stories she does not remember being told.

warm, brown eyes, a loud peal of laughter, their treehouse...

skylar is candid with them in a way that she knows makes people uncomfortable. she tells her father everything. what victor did to her. that she didn’t remember him or herself for a very long time. that she’s killed people, hundreds, with her bare hands, with her teeth, with knives and beatings, like it was nothing.

no one rejects her. they all speak in common tongues: you did what you had to do to survive. skylar knows that she could have done better, though. she doesn’t tell them that it was easy. that she knew that she had a decision, in those moments. her or them. that she had chosen her, every time, and she would again. she thinks that would make them uncomfortable, too.

they send her to school and to therapists as well, because, naturally. skylar’s, as expected, a genius, just like her father. even advanced subjects manage to bore her. she enjoys math and science, most of all, but school is more of a hobby than anything else for skylar. she prefers doing other things, trying to catch up with everything she lost.

ii / v.  ｢    powers  ! ｣

genetic atavism doesn’t fall over on the ‘ cute ‘ end of the power spectrum, but skylar wouldn’t ever change anything about herself, even if she was willing to at least partially blame victor taking her on how she appeared.

it’s a regression, in a way. to an earlier form. for skylar, it manifests in more animalistic features. claws, fangs, and pointed ears from the day she was born. it’s not the sort of mutation one can hide, not that she’d ever want to.

skylar has never been ashamed of her powers. she never will be. ( if that, in part, is because of victor, well, that doesn’t need to be explored. )

with atavism comes more than looks. she’s enhanced. in speed, strength, agility, senses, and reflexes, just like those of an animal. she has a healing factor, one that saved her life. it’s not very powerful, but it will heal her acceleratedly from any non-mortal wounds.

on the less beneficial end of this spectrum is her animal instincts. they are easily taken advantage of. she’ll have impulses that are not those a normal human posses. she’s an extrovert to the extreme, always drawn to places she deems ‘ wild. ‘ it’s lead to more than a few problems.

skylar becomes a person of society again at seventeen. she doesn’t ever attend high school, despite that she is, in fact, back in time to go for one year. they spend a year rehabilitating her, instead.

skylar doesn’t think she needs to be rehabilitated. she has trouble understanding severity. she always has. she hates knowing that what victor did took so much from her.

eleven years of her life, of her childhood, that she will never get back. from ages six to seventeen, she was a ghost because of him.

the trauma she deals with is the one side of the rehabilitation. skylar is deeply scared but has problems with admitting to this. it runs through even the most simple parts of her being.

when she’s seventeen, and she’s been back five months, for the first time since then she manages to anger her father. naturally, it’s because skylar did something she was expressly told not to.

hank does not yell at her, but rather calmly explains why what she did was wrong. skylar, for all her disregard, understands and apologizes. she doesn’t understand why he doesn’t hit her though. when she tells him this, and he looks like he might cry, she doesn’t understand that either.

skylar’s miseducation runs deep. she’s still trying to rectify it.

the other half of her rehabilitation is… school, really. skylar was in kindergarden when she was taken, but she was at a fourth-grade level. catching up is scary easy for her. skylar could still read and write, and everything else had faded with the rest of her memories, but it comes back.

she goes through everything at once. it would take a normal person years what takes her months. she is the daughter of one the smartest people on the planet, mister six phds.

hank lets her go back to school and into paragon after she passes her ged ( a seven & a half hour long test which skylar completes in three after chugging a starbucks espresso ). skylar runs to join margot.

skylar’s father makes a joke about her majoring in psychology. he see’s her suppressed emotion bullshit for what it is: bullshit. so… skylar majors in psychology, just to spite him for it.

she’s twenty-two, but almost completed her degree with the number of credits she has. after this, she’s thinking she’s going to apply to be a school counselor but also go for a biochemistry degree. she’s trying to outdo her dad & sister both.

skylar isn’t very devoted to school ; she considers it rather rudimentary. but she is smart enough to be concerned about her future.

iv / v.  ｢    personality ! ｣

skylar is usually one of the smartest people in the room, but you’d never guess it in a million years. she’s flamboyant and loud. she purposefully misunderstands people in order to make fun of them.

she positively radiates chaotic energy. skylar’s not a girl you bring home to your parents. she’s the girl you only talk to in a party setting. she’s known for being excruciatingly honest. don’t ask her what she thinks unless you’re ready to bear the weight of it.

skylar has problems taking things seriously. she’d rather not be deep or poetic. she can’t stand people she considers downers. she doesn’t want to talk about her feelings. she still, in a way, wants to forget, but this time it’s different.

acknowledging what victor did to her makes it more real than she would like. she doesn’t think she could stand it. of how susceptible she was, how stupid. she let her instincts get the better of her. she was just a little kid, all alone through her own making.

skylar feels responsible. she knows what they would tell her if she aired this: that she is not. she doesn’t need to air this.

but still, for all her frilliness, for all her diversion, for her play-acting at being some useless character, skylar does not hesitate to show her true colors. you don’t want to cross her. she’s gotten in trouble countless times by countless school officials & therapists alike for threatening people with harm.

skylar doesn’t really understand the problem with letting people know how powerful she is, that’s the thing. the girl she put in a chokehold deserved it, she thinks. she doesn’t see the issue.

In November the insurance company said I cancelled her coverage and they issued me a refund for the remainder of the policy year (thru July). I didn't know what the refund was for, but deposited the check anyway. I don't know what I did to cancel coverage (for just this vehicle, all my other vehicles remain covered.) At this point I regret making a claim and wish i could turn back the clock. I am being forced into a box and it looks shady. Three weeks ago my 2005 Cadillac STS was involved in a parking lot flood where the water rose and filled the floors of my car by about 4 inches. All us neighbors had cleaning parties using a wet vac and baking and toweling are cars in the sun over the next few days letting our vehicles dry out. On my car everything works like a dream as it did before with the exception of a 'check stability control' notice that comes on when I start the car. I have been driving the car fine since the flood and decided maybe I should make a claim to fix this error that pops up on the dash when i start the car. From the time I dropped it off at the dealer it has been all negative. Right away the dealer was negative and telling me it's the end of the world with my car, everything is ruined and it will probably be a total loss. He got the adjuster for my insurance company out there and it looks like it will be put in to the total loss category. No i am just asking the insurance company to forget everything and drop the claim because the damage is not that extreme and i dont want to lose my car. I am told at this point it is too late. Is that true? My neighbors are floored by this, i have been driving it around for a few weeks just fine and the car still looks new With only 62000 miles on it. I can't help from thinking that something suspicious is going on here. Do they stand to make a nice profit by totalling my vehicle and then replacing one module for a 1000 or so and having a perfect car with all systems working? Also the lady from the claims office said the car had to be 80% damaged for it to be a total loss. I asked her if this was based on speculative problems that they think may occur in the future because of the water, or based on actual damage now? She said it had to be actual damage now but couldn't give me any details from the adjuster yet. My boss graciously offered to find group insurance for all of her employees and she is willing to pay 50% of the premiums. Hi there. I have a question. I want to SUE my Car insurance company because they refuse to pay for my stolen car which is been more then 6 months and still hasn't been recovered. I was paying full coverage for about 4 months till the moment my Range Rover 1998 was stolen. After filing proper claims i get a letter from my insurance that they denied the claim. The reason why was because i misrepresented myself. and what they meant by that was that when i signed the contract i selected NO in a question ( Has your license ever been suspended or revoked) Now let me explain how this happened. I got the insurance thru my broker. Everything was done by phone. My broker happened to be family of dear friend of mine. At the time i asked for insurance my driver license was suspended already suspended and the reason why was because of child support for which i was going thru courts with my ex. First i decided to insure my car liability and my car was paid in full. On the liability contract it wasn't any question regarding my driver license either was suspended or not. After a week or so i thought to myself that if i get in a accident god forbid and it was my fault i have to may myself for damages and you know for such a car would be very expensive so i asked my broker if i can changed it to full coverage and so they did. on the day i did the change the girl that worked for my broker and assisting me asked me Klodian you are aware your license is suspended. I said yes and i explained the reason y. So she found this insurance company for a low price and she emailed me the contract to sign and fax it to her. now under the questions which i saw of course latter after i was denied claim i saw they were marked all NO and that was done on computer not hand writing. which of course in this case was done by the girl that helped me. Now my broker told me that insurance company should had run your driving record before they issue insurance to you and if they done that they were gone see your driver lisence was suspended. But when my broker asked them why they didnt run it Their answer was that they trusted me based on the contract i signed which to my opinion is BS. Now i want to sue them and all the lawyers they refuse to get my case and my believe is because my car is worth about $4800.00 and they don't see how they can make money out of me and i don't have to pay them up front.
