Today’s #GoGreenWithGIVE challenge is to bring awareness to our water usage for Water Wednesday! . Water is essential to human life worldwide. This is common knowledge. But, when water is so easily accessible from the water tap in a home of privilege, it can be hard to remember not to be wasteful. . Our geographical community shares what is accessible under our water table. Which means we all share the responsibility of taking care of it. . If we over-consume our shared water, we cannot sustain what is needed for drinking, hygiene, and food sourcing. So think about how you may over-use water daily, how can you make changes? Here are some simple suggestions: 1️⃣ Take short showers - A standard shower head uses 2.5 gallons a minute, 25 gallons for 10 minutes. TIP: play a 3 song playlist to time your shorter shower! 2️⃣ Simply, don’t run your faucet. When brushing your teeth, don’t let the water run. When washing dishes, fill a large pot to wash ALL your dishes rather than letting the water run for a long period of time. 3️⃣ Wash your clothes only when you have a full load of laundry. A clothes washer will use ~45 gallons of water per load. So if you have a single item to wash, consider washing by hand. 4️⃣ Buy second-hand clothing. Why? The textile industry uses roughly 425 million gallons daily. About 500 gallons for one pair of jeans. Do your research. Maybe you will reconsider buying new. . And ever think about what goes down the drain? When sewers are polluted or clogged, it can contaminate our drinking water, wildlife, and even cause urban flooding. This is not sustainable. . So think twice about what you put down the drain. Avoid putting trash, oils, pharmaceuticals, food, or really anything besides soap & toilet paper, that’s it! The rest should go in recycling, compost, or garbage. . We care to take care of our global family’s health by allowing access to clean water everywhere. We want to conserve our wildlife with clear and pollution-free waters. So what are you going to daily to make a difference in the global water sustainability? https://www.instagram.com/p/BwFYMntgbtn/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=15yl8ugmrelzd

We're shopping second-hand for Salvage Saturday! For our final day of #GoGreenWithGIVE week, legend from @giveuncw, Maddie, is out in Wilmington thrifting a trendy outfit that you voted for on our insta story earlier this week! 💁 . The clothing industry causes a massive amount of waste that most people are unaware of. Due to Fast Fashion trends, shoppers are buying new clothing & disposing old clothing at an extremely frequent rate. . This is waste we can avoid if we... 1) only buy things when we need them 2) repair items before throwing them away 3) purchase high quality items that will last a long time 4) extend the life of the item by donating & buying second-hand. . Also consider these tips for all material goods in your life! Repurpose sauce jars, write on scrap paper, use old shirts as rags, and simply search for upcycling ideas online! It reduces our human waste and is quite a fun hobby. . So before throwing something away, think "can I reuse this again?" and stow it away for multiple-use salvaging my friends! ♻️Check out our instagram story to see Maddie go thrifting for your votes! #givevolunteers #shopresponsibly (at Second Skin Vintage) https://www.instagram.com/p/BwNkEtGAj9-/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=o0no0dacxdf5

We’ve got all our fun zero-waste accessories out for Tupperware Tuesday! 👏👏👏 . So often we run into single-use plastic. That plastic gets used one time and then stays on our planet forever. But good news is, we’ve got lots of solutions and end these pollutions! 🌱 . Be prepared with your snazzy alternatives! Here are some tips to keep in mind ⬇️ • Instead of getting your take-out in a styrofoam box, request to put it in your Tupperware! • Always carry your reusable water bottle so you never have to buy plastic water bottles! And no need to buy flavored drinks if you instead naturally flavor your water with fruit! • Take your travel mug to the coffee shop you go to, they will always fill up your own mug and you can avoid your single-use cup! • Bring your reusable shopping bag to the grocery store and mall! Never need a plastic bag again. . The GIVE legends at @giveatlsu took on the #GoGreenWithGIVE challenge of use their reusable containers in their daily lives. Check them out on today’s Instagram story! . It’s Meatless Monday for #GoGreenWithGIVE week! 🥑Here’s a plant-based Buddha Bowl recipe we think you all would enjoy trying! . I’m Danielle 👋 a past Nicaragua GIVE volunteer & future Nepal volunteer! For me, a low-impact plant-based diet is something I practice not only for my health and animals, but for the environment as well! . Here are a few things to consider on how food consumption can affect the environment: 1.) Animal agriculture produces more greenhouse gases than all transportation combined. 2.) To make a single hamburger it takes 660 gallons of water. Which is equivalent to showering for 2 months. 3.) 1-2 acres of rainforest are cleared every minute. Animal agriculture is responsible for 91% of the Amazon’s destruction. 4.) Live stock covers 45% of the Earths total land. 5.) Meat consumption on a large scale impacts our global sustainability, among other factors of food sourcing . But our BIGGEST take-away message here ➡️ mindful food consumption entails limiting the distance between product and plate by supporting locally sourced and organic food from small-scale farmers . So I encourage you to try this simple and delicious low impact recipe for dinner tonight! 👇 . 🌱 Ingredients: 1 serving of quinoa, 1 can of chickpeas, an avocado, &some greens. . Spices for the chickpeas: Drizzle of a neutral oil. 1/2 Tsp Salt 1/2 Tsp Paprika 1 Tsp Chili Powder 1/8 Tsp Turmeric 1/2 Tsp Oregano . For the sauce: 1 Red Bell Pepper, 2 Tbs neutral oil, Juice from 1/2 Lemon, 1/2 Tsp Pepper, 1/2 Tsp Salt, 1/2 Tsp Paprika . Instructions: -Cook the quinoa according to the package. -Preheat oven to 425° and mix the chick peas with the spices for the chickpeas and bake in the oven for 15 min. -Put all the ingredients for the sauce in a blender and blend to desired consistency. Add more salt or lemon juice to taste. -Assemble your bowl however you would like and garnish with the avocado and greens! ENJOY 🤙 #givevolunteers #meatlessmonday https://www.instagram.com/p/BwAKo8HgzHa/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=vxda7usgpjpu

The last day of our campaign is #SalvageSaturday! We’re encouraging everyone to get active in your community today! Pick up the trash around your homes to have a hand in reducing pollution and keeping our planet healthy. . But how can we tackle this issue at its roots? In our daily lives consider how to refuse, reduce, reuse, and recycle. When we are mindful of our consumption, we can make positive choices that will not harm this planet that we share. . We are overwhelmed by the incredible participation for #gogreenwithgive week! The ripple effect of your impact is spreading, so don’t stop now! Make these sustainable choices every day moving forward. It’s Footprint Friday for #GoGreenWithGIVE week! How are you leaving behind a daily carbon footprint? We challenge you to practice sustainable alternatives today! . In places like Little Corn Island, our volunteers see firsthand how greenhouse gases cause rising sea levels. This comes from the high usage of CO2 emissions, mainly from residents of the first world. . As global citizens, we care about our impact. So we encourage all of you to bike instead of drive, use public transport or carpool when necessary, turn of your electronics, and be conscious of your energy use. Small actions, big change. . Follow past GIVE volunteers, Johnny, on the instagram story today as he gets outside to reduce his footprint today! #gogreenwithgive #footprintfriday #givevolunteers #givenicaragua #sustainabletravel #globalcitizen (at Nicaragua)

Our #GoGreenWithGIVE campaign is underway! Today we are challenging you all to go for a Meatless Monday! . The meat industry is a large threat to our environment. On average, 1 lb of beef 8,958 gallons water to produce. Vegetarian diets require 2,800 gallons/day less than meat-centered diets. That’s a bit over 18 hours of shower time! . We can practice more sustainable food consumption by simply eating less meat. So use today to try it out! This doesn’t mean everyone need to go strictly vegetarian or vegan (while we applaud you if you do so!) but we can all takes steps towards lessening our footprint. And maybe every Monday will be a meatless one for you. . 📷 : @hannahkenzieee #givevolunteers #givethailand #gogreenwithgive #meatlessmonday #mindfulconsumerism #sustainableliving #votewithyourdollar (at Thailand)
