Something I realized awhile ago is Carol in Captain Marvel (2019) is probably so emotionless because of what the Kree did. Parts of her were missing/locked away which would affect her moods and personality. She’s more direct and soldierly. That starts to fade away when she realizes where she came from.

Now in The Marvels (2023), Carol is shows a lot more emotion even in scenes where it’s just her and Goose. She’s not as closed off and she’s more mature with her emotions (like reflecting on her feelings and then apologizes for snapping at Kamala). We learn later she’s been trying to recover her memories which would definitely allow her personality to show through in this movie. We also see her be a bit awkward with emotions around people, and that’s probably due to her still holding herself to a “soldier” standard and being fairly isolated in space. She’s more comfortable with Valkyrie and Fury and later on Monica and Kamala.

This was definitely character development and I don’t think Brie Larson should’ve played the character any differently in either movie. We’re supposed to see two different characters here. In Captain Marvel, it was Vers for the most part until her story is revealed. In The Marvels, it was Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel.

Help?

The voice moved against his mind. Unnaturally pressing deep into his thoughts. It was different from the others Cal heard: they felt fleeting, accidental, for the speakers had no clue they were being overheard. This was purposeful. The one who spoke threw its thoughts towards Cal and Cal alone, no longer crying out for anyone to hear. It chained Cal. Captured him.

Are you help?

A foot reached out. Slender, broken claws pressed into the thick blackness that coated the floor. It stepped closer to the light, the single match doing little to enlighten the body that was so black, it was practically shadow. It was skeletal, limbs and shoulders jagged as the bones pressed out against stretched skin and scattered scales. As it moved, a scale shifted on its foreleg, breaking away and falling to the ground, leaving the skin beneath shining and bare. Its head was just as sharp and unnatural. Long ears were pressed back against its skull, and a single horn rose from its forehead – as Cal leant closer, he saw the stump of where the other had broken or fallen off. It shifted, stepping closer again, two limp wings hung against its sides – covered in tears and holes that would never serve to lift it into the air.

Cal could only stare. Perhaps he would have felt afraid if the strange creature of the pit didn’t look so broken and move so slowly, as if every shift of its bones caused it pain. Though it gazed at him, the creature seemed to have to fight to keep its eyes open, and each blink that lasted a little too long made it sway on its feet slightly. They were dull, only showing the grimy yellow colour when reflecting the light of the match.

“What…?”

The second he opened his mouth, the stench settled against his tongue. Cal choked.

Lowering its head, the creature began to shrink back.

Not help…?

“Cal!”

The match slipped from Cal’s fingers as he heard the shout from above, the light flickering out as it fell to the grime below. Panicked feet scrambled for surface on the muddy floor, the creature running away. Cal’s fingers fumbled for another firestarter and he lit the new match. He turned. The match’s flame searching for a tiny reflection in the muddy yellow eyes.

There.

He stilled as it caught.

The carcass was no bigger than a large dog, twice the size of the pitiful creature that shivered behind it. It bore the same strange shape, the skin and scales completely disintegrated in areas, revealing ugly black bones beneath. The hollow of its eyes had sunk deep into the skull, yet Cal could almost feel the weight of the long-lost gaze upon him.

Monster be good. Monster not speak anymore. Promise.

Chills scratched across Cal’s back. He watched as the living creature pressed closer to the carcass – pushing its head under the motionless jaw. A baby pressing against its mother for warmth.

“I’m help.”

The stench choked him as he spoke, but Cal forced the words out. Whatever it was, whatever it needed, Cal would help. He wouldn’t leave it alone in a place like this. In the wound of the earth with only bones for comfort.

Eyes widened.

Edging closer yet again, the creature sniffed – its nostrils flared and tightened again.

Sister said help would come. Sister said help good. Help take us to Sky. It tilted its head back, sending a small gurgling croon up towards the top of the pit. Go now?

Cal nodded. “Yes. We can go now.”

A high squeal escaped the creature. It jumped, spinning to headbutt the carcass’s jaw. Up Sister. We go! Help here. Go to Sky now.

Cal stared as the creature crooned and nudged at the lifeless pile of bones and rotting skin. His stomach twisted.

Turning back to Cal, the creature snorted. Sister been quiet. Sister sleeps much now. Sister wake up soon. Then we go.

“We… We’ll get Sister later…” Cal stammered. “C-Come…”

He beckoned the little thing forwards. It hesitated, looking from Cal to its dead companion, and back again. Then, it gave the slumped head one last nuzzle. Back later. Sister sleep for now. Monster come back. Promise.

Downside to watching the premiere to PJO by myself: I can’t freak out with my bestie and them freak out with me

Upside to watching it by myself: my bestie didn’t have to witness me freak out over Percy telling his mom that he had made friends, real friends (when primarily referring to Luke) and Luke saying he’ll always be on Annabeth’s side because she’s his sister

Remember in What If..? Season 1 when Doctor Strange spent centuries trying to save Christine?

I definitely don’t know any other MCU character who spend centuries trying to save the love of their live. Nope not one!

Character arcs are everything when it comes to good media. You fall in love with a character or a story because of that well rounded arc, and when it has meaning, even better. Not to go back to Marvel but I'm going back to Marvel. Overall, the MCU has examples of good and bad character arcs.

A couple examples of good: Carol Danvers, Peter Parker, Nebula, Loki, etc. If you look at these characters and their motivations from the beginning to the end, not only does it feel like there's growth, it also feels REAL and makes sense for their character and the story being told.

Now a couple of characters that didn't have the best arc and I can think of at this moment were Wanda and Steve but in SPECIFIC movies. Overall, they're good characters. But Steve in Endgame felt out of touch and Wanda in MoM didn't make sense. I do not understand why Steve would stay behind to be with Peggy. He had a life in the present time and to go back to be with Peggy doesn't make sense ESPECIALLY since he can't do anything to change the past. That's super isolating in hindsight. I do like the theory of how Stan Lee was supposed to be old Steve, but that's not confirmed and doesn't make up for this weird plot point. Then with Wanda, there's a very easy answer to why it felt off. Wandavision was apparently not finished by the time MoM started and the directors/producers had not seen Wandavision yet. So, that obvious disconnect makes sense but I feel like it could have been avoided if Marvel waited and had better inter-department/project communication.

Random thought but I think Katniss reminded Snow of Lucy Gray for most of The Hunger Games one (especially with her relationship with her sister and Rue)

It’s not until Catching Fire and Mockingjay that he sees Sejanus in her because that’s when her anger really starts to show up and the idea being rid of the Hunger Games
