So a bit of symbolism I have never seen anyone comment on is what fingers each of the 5 Godhand of Berserk represents.
From left to right, we first have Conrad.
Tumblr media
Starting with the Pinky, there is Conrad. The littlefinger unlike the rest has little symbolism behind it.
He is the forgotten member, the one with a very mundane name, who never really does anything to stand out, and who's demonic form is that of a giant bedbug.
Tumblr media
Next, the Ring Finger is Ubik.
The ring finger is the mystical finger, the one given higher signifigance than the rest of a mytholical scale, and fittingly, he is the most blantly open and frequent about making use of his magical powers to compensate for his less than impressive body.
Tumblr media
The middle finger is Slan, the one who is the embodiment of everything evil and disguisting about sex in all it's forms.
The middle finger is, fittingly enough, the finger of vulgarity, with the raised finger along with a fist used, having become a go to insult due to it's visual similaity to an erect human dick.
Tumblr media
The index finger is represented by Femto, the evil messiah of an artifical, false god.
As the index finger he points the way, showing the path for those around him to follow, wheter if be conquest, or helping him destroy his former, closest friends in the worst manner possible.
But despite appearances, he is not in charge.
Tumblr media
Symbolizing the thumb, is Void, the real leader behind the Godhand, the leader who the rest intentionally or othervise follows.
They are all under his thumb so to speak.
He is also the most vocal about the groups misson to enforce the "Flow of casuality", or in other words, putting his thumb of the scales of destiny.

I Will Say It Once And I Will Say It Again Saturn Would Be A Great Candidate For Being A Godhand
Tumblr media
Seriously, if Void invaded the One Piece world and met the Five Elders I think he would almost mistaken them as their version of Godhands, but still think they aren't as powerful as they should be. I could almost see him seeing Saint Saturn having the most cruel heart and even offers him to sacrifice his fellow Elders and Imu to become a member of the Godhand. And you know what I have a feeling Saturn would love the offer and even turn on Imu to become reality warping level demon lord. And again in a seinen setting he could get away with more shit than he could in a shonen manga.

Ubik, Slan and Conrad of the Godhand from Kentaro Miura's Berserk, each pictured with the novel that inspired their name:
Ubik by Philip K. Dick, 1969
Slan by A.E. van Vogt, 1946
This Immortal (first published serialized as "...And Call Me Conrad") by Roger Zelazny, 1966
Void and Femto are not named for sci-fi novels. The artwork of each character is directly from Miura's Berserk.

How accountable do you believe human Griffith is for the sacrifice of the Hawks, considering his mental state, the power dynamic between Griffith and the God Hand and the lies they told him, such as the Hawks "forgiving him" for the sacrifice after the fact, essentially manufacturing their consent? Do you believe that informed consent matters in levying accountability in this context, and how much do you belive Miura intended Griffith's "decision" to be seen as unforgivable?
Honestly I find this difficult to answer because the question doesn't really mesh with how I view fiction.
Like, idc about accountability really, except inasmuch as I think it's important from a storytelling perspective that he has agency when he makes the choice. I enjoy it when characters do bad things for justifiable reasons; I wouldn't enjoy it if, say, Void was holding a gun to Griffith's head and forcing him to say "I sacrifice." There are mitigating circumstances a lawyer might bring up if we were putting Griffith on trial lol, like he's in the middle of a suicidal breakdown and the godhand are telling him a biased version of his life story, but at the end of the day he makes the choice himself, as a cumulation of the way he's lived his whole life, and I love that.
Forgiveable is also a bit of a vague term. By who? Guts? The Hawks? Me, the reader? The narrative? I don't forgive Griffith because I don't blame him in the first place, I just think it's a great climax to a story. I don't think any of the fictional characters in the story should be required to forgive him, but I think Guts would based on my assessment of his feelings about it. But imo NeoGriffith isn't likely to be forgiven by anyone because he doesn't regret anything. And I don't expect the narrative to go in a redemptive, tearful apologies direction with him. I feel like we're kind of beyond that.
But I don't think Miura intended it to be viewed as unforgiveable because I don't think that's how the morality in Berserk operates in general. That's too black and white a perspective. Miura said himself in an interview that he's creating Berserk without the values of "good and evil," and for some people Griffith's world is the one they prefer. The whole point of his narrative is to ask the question of if the ends justify the means, probably without definitively answering it.
Sorry lol idk if this is a good answer to your questions, but yeah it's hard for me to engage with a story as if the characters were real. Like, if I was eaten by monsters because of Griffith I wouldn't forgive him lol, but I'm just reading a story so that's not relevant to me. I don't tend to evaluate stories or characters on the basis of morality, I only care whether the story works, and Griffith's story does. But part of why it works is because the sacrifice isn't a pure evil action, it's a sympathetic, understandable choice.
Thanks for the ask!

Alright fuckers time for the most cursed shit you've read today.
Sonic characters replacing the Berserk cast.
Its litterally just Berserk but instead the characters are Sonic dudes. Fuck my brain for coming up with this.
(Also to clarify, I'm not trying to draw meaningful parallels between the characters here, I'm just tossing them into the fiction blender and setting it to 10)
Alright so Guts=Shadow is so fucking obvious I don't even have to say it. Who the fuck else is gonna be that angsty and tragic.
This means logically we need to make Griffith=Sonic. It might hard to imagine the blue blur in such a villainous role, but like, he's pretty hard-lined about his ideals of freedom and independence. I could see him wanting to build a kingdom outta that. (Also he was voiced by Jason Griffith like c'mon this shit writes itself)
Casca=Amy is probabaly hella controversial but hear me out. She needs to idolize Sonic but still be able to form a strong emotional connection to Shadow. Take the badass leader role she took up in the IDW resistance/restoration and she fits like a glove. (Before you ask, I'm not writing this to ship shadamy, I'm just sick in the head.)
Ok so Rickert has gotta be Tails right? Like we've got our little inventor fox, idolizes Sonic, but ultimately has to find his own strength. Oh and can you imagine the slap?! Oblitetate that blue twink you funky lil fox!
Nearly forgot Puck! Initially I thought all the elves would just be Chao but then I realized... he's Chip from Sonic Unleashed. Chip as Puck is nearly 1 to 1 honestly.
E-123 Omega can be Zodd, why not. Big murder man who wants a good fight...
Shit wait maybe he should be Zavok... fuck that makes so much sense...
The Godhand are all just gonna be various eldritch super sonic bosses. Chaos, Iblis, Dark Gaia, etc. Make Void=Infinite for bonus irony points in the name.
The idea of evil is The End
Femto will be played by Neo Metal Sonic. I love the idea that Griffiths transformation made him cold, inhuman, not himself. While still obviously being who he always was underneath. Also keeps with the rest of the godhand being final bosses. Jumping forward a bit, I think when he reincarnates he oughta appear as super sonic constantly.
Ok we got the ever-green characters outta the way let's get granular.
The band of the hawk as Sonic bitches
So I don't wanna put too many iconic characters in the band and the actually relevant characters are sparce so real quick...
Corkus can be Fang/Nack. Cus he's a weasley little bitch (affectionate)
To that end let's keep team Hooligan connected and have Pippin be Bark the polar bear.
Gaston as Bean? Dude I got nothing gaston was kinda just there
Judeau however? Espio. Knife throwing.
While we're in the golden age...
Minister foss is Orbot
Charlotte's uncle, the guy Guts assassinates? Dr. Starline
Queen of Midland... Rouge? I deadass have nothing else for Rouge.
You can probabaly guess who the king and Charlotte are but they are at the bottom of the list for dramatic / comical /gross out effect.
Guts JRPG party as Sonic bozos.
Farnese shall be Blaze. They've got an affinity for fire, confidence issues, noble status, and a religious affiliation (blaze as guardian of the Sol emeralds, close enough)
Serpico is definitely Silver then. His close relationship to Farnese/Blaze as well as somewhat whimsical attitude all line up well. And Silver's telekinesis lines up well with Serpico's eventual wind powers.
Speaking of religious affiliations, Azan can be Knuckles! Hes goofy but strong and devoted to his cause.
Isidro has gotta be Charmy Bee. No not JUST because hes an annoying little shit... also cus his bee stinger subs in well for a dagger.
Shireke is gonna be Cream the Rabit. Mostly this is an in-joke on Creams high power in gameplay, and it also let's her elf Comapnion be played by Cheese the Chao.
By extension to the above. Flora ends up being Vanilia. I ALMOST decided skullknight would he vector just to continue the milf-hunter crocodile joke but came up with something better.
Ok if you've survived this far let's get into the dumb shit cus ohhh I've got some dumb shit.
SkullKnight is Big the Cat. I want all of his ominous warnings in the dopeyist voice possible. Also when he pops his helmet open to eat a Behliet (chaos emerald) it turns out it's actually just froggy in there.
Eggman is the King of Midland, SAGE is Charlotte. I'm sorry for all of the mental images this may have conjured.
Speaking of awful mental images, Gambino is Gerald Robotnik tortured over the death of his Granddaughter Maria when she caught the plague after taking in Shadow. This of all things is the one thing my brain automatically re-writes to make less weird. They ain't fucking.
That said? Gerald did make a deal... a transaction one might call it, with a certain Black Doom in sonic itself... I'm not elaborating yall can figure it out, yuck.
Elaine, aka broken Casca, is mid 2000s Amy when she had no good character traits. (Except elaine is still somehow like a million times better.)
The moonlight boy is a sonic Chao

Trying to make sense of Skull Knight and Gaiseric and the empire and the parallels with Griffith and Guts and Void and the godhand and what all this means for current events and I just need to read the whole thing again
There were 5 godhand including Void when the empire fell in an eclipse. Void is the only one remaining so it's likely he is the one who sacrificed, he's also probably the sage from the tower of conviction and so was Gaiseric's enemy even before sacrificing and ascending. Gaiseric has no history prior to being king and was a poor ruler. The person who sacrificed must have loved the city and its people to sacrifice them. Gaiseric escaped and became Skull Knight who is neither a godhand or apostle, as Guts escaped Femto. Guts is compared to Skull Knight but Griffith is compared to Gaiseric. Those other 4 godhand are gone, and the new ones didn't simply replace them because there was a spot waiting for Femto. So did Void turn on the other 4? Is Griffith now going to do the same? If Femto opposed the others, what would the apostles do? Would they turn on him without thought or choice?
I don't see it ending in Guts vs Griffith because a) I don't think guts stands a chance against Griffith and the apostles even with Skull Knight and his friends and whatever other allies and b) even if they beat Griffith, there's still the rest of the godhand

Hi Ariel! You mentioned in a previous ask about Void being the founder of the Holy See. I haven’t heard about this theory before. Where can I read it? Thank you!
I don't know if there's a single comprehensive workup of the idea, it's just something I see people talk about and something I've thought about myself independently.
When I see it discussed it's usually just offhand comments like, "Void may have started the Holy See" which are kinda dropped into conversations when people are talking about other things and I'm not sure that there's like a solid "this is why I think that" consensus. So I'll just lay out what I've gathered/what I've thought about myself.
So it's basically built on two other major theories:
that the Godhand sent to the world once per 1,000 years is there to set the direction of the next 1000 years and
that the last Godhand of a set of five is the reincarnated one and becomes the first Godhand of the next set of five after returning to 'duty' so to speak.
If you put them together the theory starts kind of manifesting itself, as follows:
Tumblr media
If you look at the flashback of the Eclipse that created Void, the Godhand present are designed to resemble ancient gods.
Tumblr media
Additionally, the Midland Kingdom's architecture resembles ancient Greek or Roman architecture - the Midland Kingdom being the kingdom ruled by Gaiseric, widely believed to be the Skull Knight as well as the King who imprisoned and tortured the sage widely believed to be Void.
So we start with "the world pre-Void was patterned more on the ancient world," which makes sense with all of the various polytheistic religions referred to which were eventually suppressed by the Holy See but more on that later.
Tumblr media
The Midland Kingdom was also reportedly a den of vice and hedonism, which the sage who later becomes Void rails against, which is why he's in prison to begin with.
Tumblr media
Eventually, the Sage hits bottom, the Eclipse is triggered, the Midland kingdom falls, the sage becomes Void and Gaiseric becomes the proto-struggler who eventually becomes Skull Knight.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is later recorded as "angel(s) being sent by God to punish the Midland Kingdom for its vice."
Some time later, however long that is, per theory #2 above, Void is incarnated into the physical world and turns over the age, thus ending the phase of Berserkworld history that resembles the real world's ancient times/ancient mythologies.
So by this theory we have Void, who looks like a flayed man and is the reincarnation of a sage who was imprisoned and tortured for railing against hedonism, defining the historical period between his incarnation and the arrival of NeoGriffith.
And what is that time period largely defined by? The rise of the Holy See, a religion at least superficially based on self-abnegation and self-punishment (Mozgus, Farnese), which perpetrates the suppression of ancient religions and thus the separation of the physical and astral worlds.
And what is the core of the Holy See? The legend of the Hawk, who of course just happens to be Griffith, the next incarnated Godhand.
So basically the idea is that Void, either in his original human sage form (and thus unwittingly) or in his reincarnated Godhand form (and thus consciously) founds or at least catalyzes the rise of the Holy See which actually exists to shape the era it lives in while simultaneously priming the world to accept the new era heralded by Griffith's return.
Which makes sense, given IoE's commentary about its plans and how things are set up, and Flora's reference to the Godhand as the executors of its will.
Anyway like I said, circumstantial, no guarantee, just a theory, but does make sense as theories go.

It's really interesting that Griffith first appears in the Black Swordsman arc. I guess that means Golden Age takes place before it?
This is an interesting way to introduce a villain! Showing them when they're evil, and then flashing back to how they got there in the first place!
Also, from my understanding, Griffith takes on the name Femto after becoming a demon. Is that a necessity, or him being dramatic?
It does. The Golden Age spans from Guts' birth to the Eclipse. The BS arc takes place sometime after the Eclipse, but before the Lost Children Arc, the one that immediately follows the GA arc.
So yes, you're going to experience Guts' youth knowing that his friendship with Griffith is not going to last and that the guy did something terrible, but not knowing the details until the end. With how long and complex the story is, you're probably going to forget how the manga began. And then you see exactly what happened that made Guts thirsty for Griffith's blood :)
Yes, Femto is Griffith's name after becoming a Godhand. It's implied that it's part of the ritual, since he should have no more ties with his human life. (should. :) )
Fun fact: the names of all members of the Godhand come from sci-fi stories!
The Godhand's names are all references to classic science-fiction books. These books are Destination: Void by Frank Herbert, Slan by A.E. van Vogt, This Immortal (originally serialized as "…And Call Me Conrad") by Roger Zelazny, and Ubik by Philip K. Dick. Femto, on the other hand, is used in mathematics to refer to the measure of one quadrillionth of something (such as a femtosecond being one quadrillionth of a second).
(however, there is another theory that Femto is supposed to be Phemt. But to this day I have absolutely no idea what a PHEMT is supposed to be, so Femto it is lmao)

The godhand in Berserk are easier to understand in concept when you realize that psyche is coextensive with reality. The reality of the godhand lies in the prevalence of certain attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors in the collective, particularly ones that repress the human will in some way or another. Void is causality, represented in eschatology and repressive constructions of fate, determinism. Slan is lust and perversion, the repressed animality in the human psyche. Conrad is misfortune, represented as disease and famine (i think about how these things are often construed as punishment for sin, I'm pretty unclear on this one). And then Ubik is sanity, the idea that there is one unified reality to adhere to, mostly shown by the ways thay he manipulates memory and dreaming. I'm most unclear about what Femto is, but it may be something like salvation. All of them work in concert serving the idea of evil made possible by the diffusion of world-rejecting religion.
There's other more unclear aspects to this, such as who were the older godhand in SKs memory.
