So I’m thinking about half life, because I think that’s all I’m capable of doing at this point, but more specifically I’m thinking about Gordon’s friendship with the security guards. How throughput Black Mesa, fellow scientists and researchers, the people he would most likely be working with on a daily basis, refer to him as Mr. Freeman. And they clearly respect him, trust him, otherwise they wouldn’t be relying on him to save them, but I don’t know how much they actually like him. Before the test they are cold and dismissive, and part of that is likely due to the stress of the experiment, knowing that higher ups are watching it with a close eye and need it to go well, but I think part of it is that none of them are actually all that close to Gordon. But the security guards refer to you be first name. To them you aren’t Mr. Freeman, your Gordon. And how this applies to pretty much all the security guards, even though many of the are likely stationed much too far away from Gordans work to have met him normally on the job. Which means that what likely happened is that Gordon got close to the guards that he sees every day, the one who works at the desk, and the one who lets him into the lab. Most scientists likely ignore them, let them fade into the background, only talk to them if they need something. But Gordon doesn’t. He greets them every day, tells them thank you when they help him, and slowly they start to bond. They become friends. And then Gordon starts to get invited to drinks after work with the guards. Gets invited back to the dorms to hang out with them. And so he starts to meet all of the security team, not just the ones he works with. And then I think about how part of why Gordon was able to do so much and get so far is because he was fitter than the rest of the researchers, more capable with a weapon, just a bit better at fighting. And I think about how much of that is likely due to his friendship with the guards. Maybe they would tease Gordon about all of the sciencecy nerd stuff he does all day, and invite him to witness their own expertise. They would take him to the shooting range and show of their own skill, compete with each other. And then show Gordon how to do it, help him train too. Maybe they are active on their off days too, maybe they like to hike, or swim, or bike, or rock climb. And as they invite Gordon to more and more of these outings, Gordon comes away just a little bit stronger than before. Getting Gordon buff was never the intent of course, they were just hanging out as friends, but I think that this friendship is what allowed Godan to survive post resonance cascade. How Gordon was chosen by g-man because he is whip smart and strong, but also because of the same kindness that led to this friendship in the first place. Despite how lonely Gordon feels escaping from Black Mesa, he never could have done it without the help from the people around him, risking their lives in an attempt to help him just a little further. And I think that his ability to spark this cooperation in people, his kindness driving him to get help for all these people, is what allowed him to succeed, just as much as anything else.

{The Challenge | Day 05}

A week of sleep deprivation caught up to me yesterday and I was pretty much down and half asleep for more than half the day, but Monday is Monday: back to work. Today I cover the causal form of verbs in the present affirmative and negative, as well as how to say “I think..” using verbs, adjectives, and nouns---it’s all hidden under a read more line because this post got a little too long. Oops. I also worked on this for a while, so although it’s five til one AM here... it’s still Monday as far as I’m concerned.

1. Dictionary & ～ない form・casual form: affirmative & negative present tense

As often the case, many of us will first learn the most basic polite way of speech before we get to peak at casual. Positive short form, however, is the easiest to learn, and I think many beginners know it before they even realize it. This is what is known at the “dictionary,” or short, form of the verb. What this means is that when you look up a verb in a dictionary, that word is already in the present positive short form. If you head to Jisho and search “to make,” you will see “作る”. Just as “to see” is “見る,” “to read” is “読む,” and “to drink” is “飲む.” No changes need to be made to their endings! So let’s make a few sentences to illustrate them in use:

マルピパちゃん、ノートがあるよ！ (Malupipa, I have your notes!)

私の犬はポップコンを食べていると思おう。 (I think my dog is eating popcorn.)

明日勉強する。 (I will study tomorrow.)

But to use the causal present negative, or ない form, requires some conjugation work:

Personally, I am always forgetting that う-verbs ending in -う and -つ change to -わない and -たない respectively---it takes some memorizing and persistent practice! But let’s see them in a few example sentences:

今晩勉強しているから、寝ないと思う。 (I’m studying tonight, so I don’t think I will sleep.)

今週はコンサートに行かない。 (I won’t go to the concert this week.)

私の妹は��こに*いない。(*いる ➜ いない) (My sister is not here.)

水曜日はテストがない。 (There’s no test on Wednesday.)

靴を買わない。 (I won’t buy shoes.)

Today I only covered the present positive and present negative conjugations, but tomorrow I will cover casual past tense! For now I will move on to something else:

2. ～と思います・I think that... 

When you want to express your thoughts, use ～と+思う. In this instance, と functions as a quotation particle and will always go in front of the sentence-ending verb 思う (to think). How toconstruct a sentence using verbs vs adjectives vs nouns paired with ～と思う will vary:

Verbs: 　　見る ➜ 見ると思う／と思います い-adjective: 　　おいしい ➜ おいしいと思う／と思います な-adjective: 　　元気(な) ➜ 元気だ ➜ 元気だと思う／と思います Noun+です: 　　バイソンです ➜ バイソンだ ➜ バイソンだと思う／と思います

In words: Keep the verb in positive present short form, then add と思う or と思います, depending on whether you wish to be casual or polite. If the thought ends with an い-adjective, keep the adjective as it is and connect it to と思う (or its polite variant). For な-adjectives and nouns alike, you will sandwich a だ between the adjective or noun and と思う／と思います. 

Before I dig into example sentences, I’ll cover some notes about ～と思う usage:

The subject (the speaker) is omitted since ～と思う／と思います already provides context that it is the speaker’s thoughts and not someone else’s

To refer to someone else’s thoughts, use ～と思っている (casual) or ～と思っています

The clause that precedes ～と思う／～と思います or ～と思っている／ ～と思っています will always end in short form

It might feel confusing and it might feel like a lot to take in if it’s your first time reading these grammar points, but I promise you that it becomes easier the more you practice---be it writing, speaking, thinking (!!), or reading. I think I’ve said enough, so let’s get into some sentences:

サカくんのブーメランを見えると思います！(polite) サカくんのブーメランを見えると思う！(casual) (I think I can see Sokka’s boomerang!)  

スキさんはとても*丁寧だと思います。(polite) スキさんはとても*丁寧だと思う。(casual) *丁寧(な): な-adjective, meaning polite or courteous (I think Suki is very polite.)

アッパちゃんはスカイバイソンだと思います。(polite) アッパちゃんはスカイバイソンだと思う。(casual) (I think Appa is a sky bison.)

And let’s try one with ～と思っています:

モモちゃんはモモはおいしいと思っています。(polite) モモちゃんはモモはおいしいと思っている。(casual) (Momo thinks peaches are delicious.) (& BTW, I did look up ATLA on the JP wiki and found name spellings, but Momo’s is a guess...)

If you want say “I don’t think...” you can technically change 思う into a negative form (e.g., 思わない or 思いません), but it’s much more common to say ～ないと思います. This refers to the ない-form discussed up above!

ジャオ提督はあまり才能がないと思います。 (I don’t think Admiral Zhao is very talented.)

モモは*おいしくないと思います。 *おいしくない(です) is the negative present of おいしい (I don’t think Peaches are yummy.)

トフさんは*丁寧じゃないと思います。 (I don’t think Toph is courteous.)

These examples are written in polite form, but simply change 思います to 思う if you want to end the sentence in casual. I’m off to do other things, now, but as always: comments, corrections, and additional notes are welcome. I’m still a beginner at Japanese and presently tired, so mistakes will and do happen, and I strongly encourage corrections.

so far away....

where are you? where were you?

For many reasons I took a break from Kendo in January, I cut back my training a lot, left a dojo to other leadership, redefined my relationship with Kendo in my life. I was training and maintaining myself for my GoDan test, which was supposed to be in April.  Long since passed, cancelled.  The world I live in, doesn’t look like its going to come back to functioning anytime soon.  This have given me time to heal from my persistent injuries. I’m sure they are still lingering, joint damage doesn’t go away -- ever, it just calms down a bit.  I’ve gotten out of shape, no gym to lift weights --  I think I will probably start training in Isometrics and get back into a functioning mindset.  Its been very difficult. Family has been lost, friends have been sick. The virus is all too near in our environment and it feels like a breeze may just kill me one day...leaving a widow, and my children fatherless, So where do we go now? Where does the path lead?

When the future planning, that once held years....is now down to a matter of days. 

Yes you cannot predict life -- ever.  But future planning requires the ability for the future to exist. Right now everything looks like it will be closed down, with no end in sight. I’m not sure people fully grasp what it is like to live in America right now. Its a daily terror.

30 Million out of work, Millions Sick, Hundreds of Thousands dead...virus infections climbing through the sky, Hospitals filling up, Morgues filled, bodies filling ice trucks...and our government doesn't give a fuck. 

We are on the brink of a massive civil unrest. MASSIVE. There are more and more citizens everyday, with less and less to live for. No Job, No home, No food, no healthcare, and they are watching Billionaires walk away with all of the “help”.....Humans are very dangerous when they are scared, hungry and sick.  If our government doesn’t get their shit together...QUICKLY. I fear for our nation, the unrest is deep rooted and wide spread. 

Far beyond anything that has happened before. I hope I am wrong, but everything I’ve predicted since reading about Wuhan in October has pretty much come to pass....so here we are....entering “America’s dark depression” the vast Economic Depression, infused with the death of millions of citizens. It will take decades to climb out.....

How do I protect my family? How do I continue to fight for justice, the good, the honorable -- when the government lacks all ethics and morals to protect our citizens.  I try to think back to my mental training in Kendo, to be aware of fear, surprise and doubt.....but fuck it is hard to control in the long term.  I have my family, I have my home, I have my health, I have my job....For now.  Is anyone out there?

A Year in Contemporary Albion: Iuli

School age children everywhere celebrate on Gwenesdyth 22th of Iun as the Trinitath term comes to a close and the long 8 week summer holiday starts. Petrolheads get another fix over the first weekend as the Alban Grand Prix gets into gear. Culture vultures in Ludun can look forward to the start of The Proms on Lundyth 1th Iuli. The Albert Hall plays host to a month of affordable and accessible classical music events, most of which are of exceptionally high quality and do not entail the jingoistic pomp and spectacle of the last night. Even if you can’t get tickets or don’t fancy being inside in Ludun during the sticky heat of Iuli, there are live streams on big screens in parks and squares in almost every major city and on ABC4. The first week of the summer holiday is also another chance for aficionados of horse racing to don their fanciest outfits and splash the cash as Riol Dorthyn hosts the most prestigious meet of the year from the 1th to the 7th.

Elsewhere, hostilities continue in the men’s croucad as the action moves to either Mancar or Laeds for the 3th test match of the summer. The series takes a brief intermission afterwards so that the competing sides can play a mini-series of three T20 internationals.

For a week around the same time, from Lundyth 13th Iuli, boating types have their fun. Down on the south coast, Cowes Week attracts teams from all over the globe to race the most extreme and advanced yacht designs.

The week after, from Dythiau Ɛth to to Sabath 12th, it’s the turn of fans of golf to get excited as The Open kicks off at Troon in Godan. Naturally, there are other tournaments and other golf courses both in Albion and around the world. A lot of them. But the Riol Troon Golf Club is to golf what Arglwyd’s is to croucad. Indeed, one might argue that it is even more totemic as its status as the original club and the competition that is held there as the oldest in the world is uncontended. The Open is the most prestigious of the four annual “majors” in golf. As for the club at Troon, it is ludicrously exclusive. Membership is expensive and getting it is almost impossible. The waiting lists for any average Ianto to tee off on the hallowed ground are years long. In addition to the profligate vandalism of nature required to build the courses themselves, it’s exactly the kind of thing that makes the sport so objectionable in my view. At least, as is customary in Albion, the women’s game has a higher profile than in your world and Troon is unisex.

During all of that however, many families will have chosen to take 2 weeks of summer vacation, especially if they have a 16 year old child. This is in part because the dreaded day of doom hits for “U” level students on the 22th of Iuli as the year’s results are released. Cue pictures in the press of the most model-pretty, wavy raven-haired and dark-eyed Alban girls the photographers could find laughing and celebrating their amazing success. Also cue the annual round of national hand-wringing over whether educational standards are going up or down. “U” level exams are marked relative to your year as a whole which is then graded relative to every other year, so they can pack a rather cruel and devaluing punch to your A grade if it turns out that you got it in a year full of dunces. The press and public inevitably read the year grading as a comment on the teachers, the school system, and the government even though it is nothing of the kind. Anything less than a B has everyone tutting and whining about declining standards.

While all of that goes on, the students, universities, and polytechnics have to spend 4 weeks desperately sorting out who is going where. Either that or the students bum around in the sunshine. As Iuli heads into Awst, temperatures rise and humidity, rainfall, and wind all drop. The still, dry heat of uchel hav is most definitely in the air. It happens every year, reliable as clockwork. Or, at least, as reliable as a cheap Taiwanis digital watch.

Out in the west, the Tri Cors Festival runs every year over the last week in Iuli and the first Lundyth in Awst (which, you guessed it, is another Bank Holiday). Held on rotation between the beautiful cathedral cities of Gwyrhyd, Carglevi, and Wendavon, it is advertised as the oldest music festival in the world. Dating from the Cymanolad period, it is certainly the oldest such event to have been running continuously in Albion. It is a global draw for fans of classical and choral music.

The last week in Iuli also hosts the last major race meeting of the season, known as Carlunath Caelda, as the famous estate switches from motor horsepower to actual horsepower. Horse racing has no season as such but does tend to take a bit of a break in Awst as the going can become very hard so most owners like to avoid risking their best rides.

Conditions are ideal for croucad though. Especially for batsmen. Hostilities resume in the men’s test match series from Dythiau 21th of Iuli as Eirean plays host at Mullachide. As the match in the series that was traditionally attended by the upper echelons of Eiranic high society — who have been historically influential — it is the second big set piece match of the series after Arglwyd’s. Since it takes place over the Awst Bank Holiday weekend, it also tends to draw a large crowd of enthusiastic supporters from all ranks. The festival atmosphere at the other games is nothing compared to the Eireanic test match which is typically a full on party. The game plays out against a non-stop musical background of bodhran beats and melodies played on bouzouki and penny whistles. If you can’t get tickets for this massively popular international fixture, then the Ʌth match in the Siar Championship calendar gets played at the same time. It’s the biggest money tournament in the domestic game in Albion and has a high profile. Ticket prices are also heavily subsidised by sponsorship, so crowds tend to be decent, especially during the school summer holidays.

Wow, Its been a while since I posted --

I am still a few years away from my GoDan test. But I am preparing some of my students for their first test, and three of them for their 1.Kyu test. 

A few tips of advice I have given them, that were passed down to me for Shinsa.

1. Stay present in the moment - don’t distract your mind with idle chatter and conversations the day of your test. Have those conversations afterwards, allow your mind to be free of clutter, don’t diffuse your Ki with random thoughts and inane, insignificant conversations. Observe every test before and after you. 4. Trigger invitation with Seme, Tame. -- Set up strikes, pressure, seme, Tame release attack with everything you have. Release seme to trigger invitations --  to attack for waza application. (opposite of waiting) 

5. Be positive in your mind Don’t discount yourself. Don’t Judge yourself--that is why you have sensei judge your performance. During the Keiko, your only focus is your opponent. All else should be cast away. 

6. DO NOT BLOCK Quit blocking. ATTACK. if they have won the point let them have it. Focus on attacking. Blocking to prevent being hit is poor kendo. We strive to do clean, beautiful Kendo.

The Pelerin, Part 1: The Coming Storm

The following piece is a writing exercise in the form of a travelogue. Such pieces are intended to help me develop a clearer picture of some of the people and places that exist within the parallel universe of Albion at a given time and to develop the scenery and contexts within which they live. They are often long pieces because, as something of an architecture geek, I confess that I tend to enjoy writing them more than the stories that take place within them. They are also typically open-ended. I make no promises that they will ever reach any kind of resolution. Nevertheless, they do possess a form of narrative conceit in which I imagine that the protagonist and narrator is supra-temporal in various ways, usually undefined.

In a universe that is tantalisingly close to our own, yet forever beyond our grasp, can be found the city and siar of Gwyrhyd in a country known as Brytan within the land called Albion. As they reckon such things, the year is 3Ɛ1Ʌ. They call that strange number tri mil, el can, a decolasin and say the year as trisin-el decolasin. You would call the number six-thousand seven hundred and ninety. As for the year, well ... beyond mathematics, equivalence begins to fail.

The mighty Cyn Iorweth of Tyo Dynolan sits on the throne of Brytan and Eirean. It is the 17th year of his reign and his authority both in Albion and throughout Christendom is at its zenith. A rebellion led by the Maelor of Cymran has been overcome and his young son and heir, also named Iorweth, has been wed to the eight year old Cynes Marged of Godan. Albion stands on the cusp of being fully reunited for the first time since the legendary days of Urthfael in the time of Iesu and Iosef, almost 900 years ago as they count. He governs indisputably as Arcynmawr and his far-flung dominions stretch from Setyr in the north to Cuprys on the fringes of the Holy Land.

Yet the blessings granted by the grace of god to Iorweth in strength of arms with one hand he takes back with the other. His many joyous successes have been tainted by sadness in trials of personal tragedy as first his two eldest sons, Harri and Urthfael, and then his beloved wife, the Cynes Elinora, have been taken from him. Grief and mourning have hardened the heart of the ageing Cyn as he moves closer to 50 than 40.

Iorweth’s grip on power over his sprawling realm is weaker than it appears on the surface. The competing demands of his countless ambitious vassals are an equation that can never be balanced. Continual challenges by rivals, including the King of Gawl, place an almost intolerable burden upon the realm and his subjects. The weight of expectation upon him as inheritor of the crown of Urthur compels the adoption of policies that might appear to our eyes to exacerbate, rather than resolve, such difficulties.

Prolonged prosperity has led to considerable population growth throughout Western Europe that has stretched the capacity of every land to feed their people. It is a problem that has been exacerbated by corrupt government, excessive military demands, and an exploitative aristocracy. To compound the problem, incidences of bad weather and poor harvests are on the rise. Consequently, there has been widespread famine in some years of late.

It is a time of change. Both within and without Albion, many have noted the apparent loss of god’s favour. They respond with intolerance and religious fervour. The Long 3Ʌth century is coming to a close. It began with the accession of Harri 1st and end of the Wars of Succession in 399Ɛ and culminated in the long and peaceful reign of Iorweth’s sainted father Harri 3rd. What is to follow will test the nation as it has not been since the days of Gwrtheyrn. They must be prepared. I, Barachiel, must warn them. The Irin need to know.
