Can you write one where the Rogers is assigning a new recruit to each avenger for training? Loki gets the new girl and heâs irritated thinking sheâs just some normal human that hasnât a clue how to fight properly because of her petite size. When it comes time for them to spar, she gives him hell. She fights with swords and is very skilled in the art. He says something to piss her off and she ends up blasting him away with powers she never told anyone about. Loki realizes what she is since he knows the magic she used. Sheâs part light elf but being half human she was abandoned and left to die just like Loki was. They end up bonding and work together on the team.
A/N: I hope you like it! I didn't focus a whole ton of them working together, but I feel like you get the point. It's a bit longer than my other one shots.
The Moon And Her Darkness
Summary: Y/N, the newest avenger, starts her first day of training. An unimpressed Lokiâs doubts are proved to be wrong when she reveals herself to be stronger than he knew.
Word count: 2744
Warnings: angst, dick Loki

Your blood pumps fast through your body as you stare at the raven haired god. Ever since you joined the team, heâs been giving you dirty looks and eye rolls. You tried to not pay attention to it since you know of his past (and have been warned by Tony), but as the newest Avenger trying to prove herself, you find yourself longing for his approval.
It has been a week since Nicky Fury showed up at your home, extracting you from it, and throwing you into the lion's den you called the Avengers. You never signed up for it, but given that you were on the governmentâs radar for a long time, youâre not surprised. A couple mishaps here and there made them take you on their own terms. Theyâve decided that having super powers is not something to be normalized and that you couldnât live like a normal civilian.
Although you want to be home, the Avengers have already shown to be a great family. Nat and Wanda have already taken you shopping while Steve gave you a tour of the tower. As far as the others, they have been out of sight. Bucky avoids everyone, Sam with him because theyâre glued to the hip, and Tony is somewhere else working on new technology with Bruce. Clint? Thor? Who even knows. Youâve been thankful for the attention they have given you.
Except for Loki.
You remember the attack in New York and you wonât lie when saying that approaching the god is intimidating. He stands with great pride and power, itâs hard not to feel small, but when he stares at you the way he does, itâs harder. He doesnât stop looking at you as if you were a rat he found in a sandwich. Disposable. Replaceable. Disgusting. You donât expect much from the God being that heâs only staying here out of punishment for the attacks, but you had hoped for a little something more. Even a prank or two.
When Steve told you that you were going to start training, you expected hand to hand combat like the rest, not whatever involves Loki being in the gym at the same time as the two of you. He hasnât said a word, but just stared at you as Steve goes over some basic disabling techniques and defense. Most of it is already burned in your brain from your childhood, being a warrior and all, but you still manage to learn some new things.
But learning as to why Loki is there, that still remains unclear. Everytime you throw a punch or try to block one of Steveâs, Loki scoffs at you and rolls his eyes. He looks completely relaxed on a bench in the room, yet he could not be looking at you with a more tense gaze. He looks worried, as if youâre going to get beaten to a pulp.
âOkay, whatâs wrong?â You yell at him.
Panting, you block Steveâs last hit and turn to the younger Odinson.
âSorry?â
âOh, donât sorry me. Cut the crap, Loki. Whatâs up?â
âI believe the sky is.â
You grab a knife off the wall and aim it in his direction, startling him slightly but not even shocking Steve.
âYou stare at me with daggers in your eyes and judge my every move. You have yet to even talk to me since I joined the team. What do you have against me, you ass?â
âY/N-â
âShut it, Steve!â You yell, quickly aiming the dagger at him before returning to Loki, âYou. Talk.â
âItâs just pathetic, thatâs all.â
âPathetic? Youâre calling me pathetic?â
You start to charge at Loki, but Steve quickly wraps his arm around your waist, holding you back from gutting the god.
âY/N, I wanted you to spar with him after me,â he cuts in.
âAnd why would I do that?â
âBecause he's a skilled fighter who matches your level.â
âOh, so I spar with the tricker who decides Iâm too pathetic to fight. Heâs going to teleport or some shit and stab me like he does with Thor.â Lokiâs eyebrows raise at the mention of Thor getting stabbed. âYes, Iâve heard the stories. Iâm not that naive, Steve.â
âI wonât leave you alone with him. Iâll be here to watch and guide.â
âWhat do you know about fighting with me? I have magic beyond beliefâ Loki asks the both of you.
âI know more than you think,â I spit, turning back to Steve, âCan we do something else?â
âWell, you coud-â
âI am not sparing with Loki.â
âOkay, then how about weapons? Whatever one you want to start with?â
Loki scoffs again at the mention of you fighting any other way than hand to hand combat. Heâs lucky youâre on the same team as him or else you would have decapitated him by now just because of annoyance. How can a man so attractive be so obnoxious?
You walk over to the wall of weapons were Steve and quietly discuss which ones youâll practice with. He recommends knives so you can spar with Natasha when heâs gone, but the swords are more up your alley. They remind you of your childhood, the weapon of your people. Some days, you miss them, but you know they are fighting their own battle that is too dangerous for you.
Picking up the swords, Steve warns you he is not good which makes Loki laugh again. He has the right to this time because how do you practice with a man who doesnât know what heâs doing. You canât last ten minutes with Cap before youâre tired of his flailing. Heâs really not good.
âLoki, you wouldnât happen to know how to use swords would you?â
âI have some experience. Asgard knights and Valkyrie used them, we were forced to learn.â
He stands and takes Steveâs sword from him. Turning to you, he smirks, taking you in. Your frame looks so small compared to his, nothing but a mortal. Heâs never admit it, but he finds you slightly adorable, in a helpless baby sort of way. You take proper stance and stare at Loki dead in the eye, determined to prove him wrong.
The two of you run at each other, swinging at any unblocked area you can, yet never hitting. He blocks your swing, pushing you back but not down. Looking up at him, you scream and run, thrusting your sword towards his neck and legs. He blocks you again, but not without stumbling. Before heâs able to get up, you land a blow right to his chest, knocking the air out of him. He hooks his foot around your leg and flips the two of you over so he hovers above you, sword to throat.
âIâll admit it, you are good, but not great,â he laughs.
He stands up and walks off, setting the swords back on their holder on the wall. You gradually stand up, fury in your bones for the way he speaks to you.
âYou⌠are irritable!â You yell.
Right before Loki gets to the door, he turns to face you. Steve rushes to your side.
âY/N, stop. Heâs not worth it.â
âOh, heâs not worth it, alright,â you mutter to Steve, âHeâs not worth the pride. The praise. Whatever the âglorious purposeâ he thinks he has. Heâs just an insecure little boy who needs to prove himself over others, make them feel small so he feels superior. Just a bully.â
âIâd watch your tongue,â Loki warns.
âOr else what? Youâll challenge me to a words competition? See who has the best insults or can sound like the biggest douche because I think we all know who would win! Another check mark for your book of things youâre better at than âmidgardiansâ or âmortalsâ or whatever degrading nickname you think of next.â
Lokiâs chest heaves in anger. Youâve never seen someone so angry or heard anyone yelling at you with concern like Steve. Nothing he says registers in your head as Lokiâs daring looks fill your mind. Youâd almost be scared if you didnât know heâs full of empty threats. Just a scared little god boy.
âYou imbecile, think you can scare me?â
âActually, I think anything can.â
âI can take words from someone who does not know me, but to be called a coward is not something I take lightly.â
âSo what are you going to do about it? Huh?â
âNothing, I donât waste my time on people like you.â
âOh, people like me? Because the great Frost Giant Asgardian is sooo superior.â
âDonât you ever say that.â
Loki rushes to your side, grabbing you by the throat and lifting you up against the wall.
âLoki, stop it!â Steve yells.
âThis is not about you, Rodgers. I suggest you leave before getting in the crossfire.â
âI canât do that. The safety of this team-â
âIs your priority. I know you are honorable, but I highly suggest you leave.â
Steve hesitates at the sound of you gasping for air. You cling onto Lokiâs hand, tightly wound around your throat. His veins pop out of his hand like a dehydrated man. Steve looks back at you, eyes now closed to focus on your breathing.
âPut her down first,â Steve orders.
âFine, always have to be the hero.â
Loki sets you down and your body goes numb. Everything hurts, your throat swelling. You gasp for all the air you can, feeling it go down your throat and enter your lungs. Itâs fresh, comforting, healing. Leaning your head back against the wall, you barely open your eyes to see Steve by your side.
âAre you okay?â
Not energized enough to speak yet, you nod your head and place your hand on his shoulder. Steve looks over at you with worry before turning back to Loki.
âLeave, now.â
âGladly.â
Loki turns to walk away, but doesnât. He stands there to listen to you and Steve. At this point, neither of you care. Youâre too focused on not dying.
âCan you breathe?â Steve asks.
You nod your head.
âI can get you help. We have a hospital room.â
âNo,â you choke, âIâm fine. I just need a moment.â
Steve nods, but doesnât listen. He gets up and leaves the room, rushing down the hallways to get a nurse, leaving you alone with Loki.
âWhy havenât you left?â
âNo reason.â
âPlease, just go. Iâm tired of fighting. Youâve done enough.â
Loki turns to look at you. You look weak, but actually weak this time. The purple tint to your skin is fading as your lungs self regenerate as you keep breathing. Gripping onto the wall behind you, you stand up. Your knees are weak, making you wobble as you do. Youâre not lying. Youâre tired of Loki. Youâve barely spoken to the man and heâs made two attempts on your life in ten minutes. Sure, you teased him, but doesnât he deserve it for being an ass.
âWeak.â He mutters.
That was the last straw. You look up at him. He stares at you as if the devil himself has entered you and your eyes glow bright red, but you know what is wrong. Holding out your hand towards Loki. A glow erupts from behind you, bright yet dark. Itâs dark blue like the night sky and Loki watches it in awe. In seconds, Lokiâs body is flung through the training room doors, blasting him into the wall of the hallways. He feels his rib breaking, his head hitting the wall. He yells out in pain as you slowly approach him, the anger seeping through.
âNever call me weak.â
Loki flips his head up to look at you, shock running through his body. At the sound of his body collapsing, the other Avengers come running forward. They look upon the sight of you towering over the trickster god with a look theyâve never seen before. Ethereal. Godly. You look as if youâre a queen staring at her peasant handmaid. Anger. Controlling. Power.
âWhat the-â Bucky mutters.
âYou,â Loki gasps.
He struggles to stand as the team tries to help but he refuses. You two locked eyes but nothing was said. âYouâre an elf.â
Everyone looks back at you with confused faces, but you donât say anything. Your body goes hot at the mention of the word âelfâ. The fire inside you fades out as anxiety places it, waiting for Loki to continue.
âI knew if someone was here to figure it out itâd be you,â you whisper.
âLight elf yes?â
âYes, moon elf to be exact.â
âHow are you here? Arenât the-â
âYes, theyâre away. I was left to die. Our town got ransacked, everyone fled. No one stopped for me.â
âThen how are you here?â
âThe Air elves. They got word of what happened and came. Found me. Took me back, but-â
âYou werenât suited. They found out.â
âYes.â
Thereâs a moment of silence between you and the god. His eyes shine with sadness, tears coming to the corners. He looks at you with great pity as the wall inside you breaks.
âCan someone explain whatâs happening?â Steve asks.
âCan you tell?â You ask Loki.
He nods, âYes. Y/N is a moon elf, a tribe of light elves. Theyâre as high up as Asgard in the nine realms, powerful warriors. Theyâve been at the center of every creature out there. People have been after them for their weapons, gems, and wealth. A landmark for every thief and warrior in the universe.â
âMy town was destroyed when I was a little girl. Nobody wanted me because I was a child. I was a burden to them.â
âShe was left for dead to be found by the Air Elves. Another tribe. Not as powerful. But they didnât want her and thereâs only one reason why they wouldnât want a moon elf. Sheâs a half-breed.â
âMoon elves are the only ones who tolerate them. Half human, half elf. Considering many of them come from moon elves, theyâre not despised, but Air Elves.â
âThey dropped you off on Midgard to be picked up by someone else. I assume you hid your powers?â âI had to. I acted out once when I was little and my parents freaked out. They sent me away. I lived in a orphanage before some group took me, trained me, helped me hone in my powers. They saved me.â
âUntil you got to old and left.â
âDidnât know where to go. I became a waitress at some back alley bar, lived above it in an apartment with my manager. Lived paycheck to paycheck.â
âThen?â
âNicky Fury came to me. I was on SHIELDâs radar and they wanted me on the Avengers.â
The room goes silent. Throughout your talking you missed the way Loki got considerably closer to you. You practically stand right under his nose. Loki raises his hands and places them on your shoulders, getting your attention. You two look each other in the eye for a long moment.
âI am⌠so sorry.â
You feel the tears forming in your eyes as Loki pulls you into his chest, holding you by your waist. The team watches in awe as the closed off god embraces you. Slowly, everyone leaves you two in the hallway. An hour goes by as you cry in Lokiâs eyes.
Eventually, Loki picks you up bridal style and brings you to your bedroom. He helps you get dressed for the night and settled in bed before you grab his hand, making him turn back to face you. His eyes are no longer riddled with anger or hatred, but kindness and pity. He looks at you like youâre a little lamb to be protected.
âYes, darling?â
âStay with me?â
He nods before undressing and getting in bed with you. He pulls you close, your head leaning on his chest, and places an arm around your waist.
Every night goes on like this. No matter what happened in the day, even if you two got into an argument, Loki always found his way back by your side in your bed. You would have never expect it from how he treated you at first, but after the last few months since you met him, you find yourself growing closer to the god.
Loki slips into your bed for what feels like the 1482nd time. Resting your head on his chest, Loki pulls you close to his body.
âGoodnight, darling.â

alright so i finished up playing all of pokemon shield including the post-game mini plot, so hereâs a quick fire list of all the things i liked about it and disliked about it before i go on to explain it in more depth (also spoiler warning). here we go.
what i liked:
the graphics, a little weaker in handheld form but largely unnoticeable unless you were looking for it. GREAT graphics when playing on tv mode.
the new pokemon. they were all really cute, and i especially loved the alternate forms and new evolutions of older gen pokemon.
opal, sheâs hands down one of my favourite gym leaders so far only shortly followed by bede.
bede is a nonbinary icon as proven by the fact that they didnât use any pronouns to refer to them until after the fourth gym, and the fact that when theyâre in their gym uniform its trans flag colour. it may not be canon, but its canon in my heart.
gym battles are treated as they should be -- huge spectacles that gets people amped the hell up.
dynamaxing. its so goddamn satisfying to finish off a gym battle with your best pokemon as a fucking giant behind you, no matter their actual size. tiny pyukumuku behind you? badass. huge ass wailord? bad. ass. an actual baby pokemon? bad. ASS.
the wild area. introducing camping was a good system, it definitely helped a lot when you couldnât exactly jump back to a pokemon center so you cook your pokemon some curry to revive and heal them. i imagine they took some inspiration from breath of the wild, tho i havenât played it to really confirm.
what i didnât like:
they cut so many corners in the game, you can definitely tell it was made in a hurry.
a minor note here, but for me i have this annoying bug that makes it so some pokemon have the exact same cry. its a sort of whooshing noise that youâd expect for a flying type pokemon, but it frequently appeared instead of well known and familiar cries. i canât pin down exactly what the cause of this is, or if iâm hearing things wrong, but it was infuriating.
the towns are empty and barely even give you flavor text anymore. you might as well not speak to any npcs except shop keepers and named characters.
there is exactly three cute outfits and three cute hairstyles and thatâs about it. i know a lot of this point is mostly about personal taste but please nintendo, we had such a good range in the previous game.Â
donât explore. there is literally no point in looking in all the nooks and crannies of this game, because i guarantee that if the game doesnât tell you to go there, then thereâs nothing there.
itâs too easy. itâs....actually crazy that iâm even putting this as a point, because iâm a strict believer in making games playable for everyone. but itâs just....too much.
the cut down pokedex will forever inject salt right into my veins. especially when they had the audacity to include one of the first starter pokemon, but not the other two. charizard is an okay pokemon but its overrated, nintendo please accept that.
the plot didnât exist until suddenly it did and then it made no sense.Â
i hate the fact that the team in this game were just delegated to fans. i understand the whole âfake outâ thing they might have been going for by getting the player to think that theyâd turn out to be bad, but no. it just sucks.Â
fucking. swordward and shieldbert. i???? literally. have no. words. (i do but theyâre super long so hmmm down below)
a game worth about ÂŁ20 ($25) less than i paid for it. its a decent quality game, but not nearly nintendo quality.Â
wow this post is longer than i expected it to be already. but anyways, the rest is super long and under the cut further going into depth about the points i raised.Â
to start with, iâll talk about the good points because honestly?? i really wanted to love this game. i really really did. maybe it was just the fact that at first i didnât like sun and moon because they changed the formula so much, but it turned out to become my favourite game in the series. or maybe it was just that i donât like being hypercritical of things i spent fifty fucking pounds on. either way, i wanted to like the game, and overall i sort of did but i sort of didnât. lots of mixed feelings. anyways. onto explaining the good stuff. (or you can skip to ânow on w the bad junkâ for the bad stuff)
1. the graphics, a little weaker in handheld form but largely unnoticeable unless you were looking for it. GREAT graphics when playing on tv mode.
one of my favourite things about the pokemon series in recent times is seeing the process from 2d undetailed sprites to 3d incredibly detailed models. the most ambitious thing about gen 5 was the way the camera moved with your movements as you crossed the bridge, and now i just sometimes sit back and thing âwow 13 year old me would FLIP if she could see how good they gotâ. bc i kept just....admiring all the graphics and the quality of them.Â
2. the new pokemon. they were all really cute, and i especially loved the alternate forms and new evolutions of older gen pokemon.
definitely one of my favourite things about the game was seeing the new forms of pokemon we already knew and the alternate forms theyâd take when dynamaxed. i love seeing pokemon with new types that completely flip the script, like darumaka becoming an ice type instead of a fire type. or the fact that they gave mr mime a galaran form and it actually doesnât look bad.Â
i really loved that some of the galaran forms had unique evolutions, such as linoone evolving into obstagoon. or meowth into perrserker. it makes sense and iâm always super happy to see new evolutions for old pokemon, it keeps things interesting when pokemon other than eevee get new evolutions.
(tho that being said, still disappointed thereâs still not another eeveelution. still holding out hope for that ghost type.)
3. opal, sheâs hands down one of my favourite gym leaders so far only shortly followed by bede.
iâm not super well versed in the pokemon universe besides from gen 1 and gen 5 onwards (if you couldnât tell), but its really refreshing to have an old gym leader thatâs visibly elderly rather that just grey haired maybe retiree man. her personality was also really fun, it sort of felt like she literally had the most personality of all the gym leaders, which kind of sucked but it made me really love her character.Â
and bede i didnât wholly expect to really like as much as i did? i mayhaps might have spoiled myself a little on their gym leader status by dipping into the swsh tag here on tumblr before i fully completed the game. but still, they seemed just generally really annoyingly stuck up? but something endeared me to the darl and i just think it mostly had to do w the fact that opal took one look at them and declared they was her grandchild now.Â
4. bede is a nonbinary icon as proven by the fact that they didnât use any pronouns to refer to them until after the fourth gym, and the fact that when theyâre in their gym uniform its trans flag colour. it may not be canon, but its canon in my heart.
argue with me on this point all you like, but you canât deny the fact that in CANON they literally did not use any pronouns to refer to bede until after the fourth gym. the only mention of pronouns before that was their trainer card, which i did not check because good character development should be shown not told through an impersonal medium such as character cards.Â
5. gym battles are treated as they should be -- huge spectacles that gets people amped the hell up.
iâve always loved the way the league is set up, because it makes sense. the pokemon formula works and its interesting, but in previous games most people only vaguely acknowledge it as something every kid tries but doesnât really complete. itâs already set up people love pokemon battles, there just wasnât a spectator sport about it unless in the anime or movies. theyâre just a thing that happens that none of the npcs care about.Â
finally its treated like the spectator sport that it should be. like,,, hell yeah,,,Â
(also do you think that in the pokemon universe thereâs various stories/tv shows about made up kids completing the league and becoming champions? because i definitely do.)
6. dynamaxing. its so goddamn satisfying to finish off a gym battle with your best pokemon as a fucking giant behind you, no matter their actual size. tiny pyukumuku behind you? badass. huge ass wailord? bad. ass. an actual baby pokemon? bad. ASS.
i p much summed up most of my thoughts in this point well. but i love when pokemon are so visibly powerful. like these creatures have powers that weâd equate to actual gods like summoning whole storms, creating giant waves, create earthquakes and so much more. pokemon are so powerful and to see them become giant and have so much weight and power? its so satisfying controlling that and bringing down other giant pokemon.Â
7. the wild area. introducing camping was a good system, it definitely helped a lot when you couldnât exactly jump back to a pokemon center so you cook your pokemon some curry to revive and heal them. i imagine they took some inspiration from breath of the wild, tho i havenât played it to really confirm.
i really appreciated the change that started in pokemon letâs go with some pokemon being visible and easy to encounter wandering through the grass. it makes it so much easier to search for the one pokemon that you donât have in your pokedex yet, or if youâre looking for a specific pokemon to join your team.
i love how large and expansive the wild area is, and with the camping system you can just explore and fill out your pokedex without ever leaving if youâre fully stocked up on supplies. it makes you really believe the whole âyep this kid isnât just blasting through the whole thing in one dayâ. kids sleep in tents on their journey with their pokemon and cook curry for them all. adds a nice level of immersion and convenience.Â
.
jesus fuck this is so long and i havenât even gotten to my criticisms yet, is anybody actually reading this chunk of text??? well rip to you my friend and thank you. but now on w the bad junk.
1. they cut so many corners in the game, you can definitely tell it was made in a hurry.
they did a decent job considering it was in development for only two years w one only for the concept and the second actually making it. but they cut so many corners it doesnât quite feel like a true installment into the pokemon universe. it feels like it was made by another dev studio rather than gamefreak. like how fallout new vegas and fallout 3 barely feel like the two installments in the same franchise.Â
this point sort of leads into many different points that i raised, so iâll explain those a little bit more in depth there. but to sum it up, the easiest way to see it is just how...flat things are. if you only pay attention to the things the game directs you to, then you will not miss a single thing. flavor text is less about adding depth to the world and more just...pointless. it adds. nothing.
and in the post game when sonia gets a new assistant, even though she plays a fairly important part in the post-game plot, she doesnât get a name nor a unique character model. she getâs a generic doctor model yet itâs treated like we should feel betrayed that nameless npc 234 went behind soniaâs back and stole from her.Â
OH! and i almost forgot!!!! but that one part where rose is trying to talk leon into something âmysteriousâ??? they straight up just used images!!!! like,,,, what???? you didnât have time to program the minimal animations for that?? whoâs fault is that for pushing the release!!! give your employees time to work at a decent pace and not crunch them to reach an impossible goal. game freak, you donât have to release a game every november.
2. a minor note here, but for me i have this annoying bug that makes it so some pokemon have the exact same cry. its a sort of whooshing noise that youâd expect for a flying type pokemon, but it frequently appeared instead of well known and familiar cries. i canât pin down exactly what the cause of this is, or if iâm hearing things wrong, but it was infuriating.
also p much just explain this in the point. BUT it happened all. the. time. the only pokemon i know for sure was effected by the bug was gyarados, because instead of the roaring cry i heard the whooshing sound that was probably meant to be another pokemonâs cry. it sounds wack when im saying it rn bc im not 100% convinced i wasnât making this up, but it was the sole reason i turned the pokemon cries to get drowned out by the music and sound effects.
3. the towns are empty and barely even give you flavor text anymore. you might as well not speak to any npcs except shop keepers and named characters.
i touched on this previously in 1 but basically walking around a town and talking to npcs will not get you any interesting dialog. going into the houses/rooms, and youâll only get one npc whoâs all like âiâm brushing my hair!â and thatâs about it. there arenât any items tucked away in houses or corners of buildings for you to explore or battle people. when you acknowledge that thereâs no flavor text from npcs all the towns feel practically empty whereas in the previous games it actually alive.
not to mention how little the diaglog changes? like it may just be my faulty memory at play but im pretty sure that the npcs in the previous games had more dynamic dialog in which theyâd change what they said depending on your action in the town or for the plot. after a major event just happened, if you walked around and talked to everyone in that area theyâd talk about it. but that happened like....once.
4. there is exactly three cute outfits and three cute hairstyles and thatâs about it. i know a lot of this point is mostly about personal taste but please nintendo, we had such a good range in the previous game.Â
one thing i loved about the series was the increasing freedom in customisation of trainers. fashion kept getting wider and with more variety, clothes that were still cute and iâd frequently have about 2k because i just kept buying them. by the end of my playthrough of swsh i had almost a million saved up because i didnât like most of the clothing options. i found one outfit and hairstyle i liked a quarter of the way through the game and stuck with it until the end. they drastically cut down on the options, and that sucked.Â
5. donât explore. there is literally no point in looking in all the nooks and crannies of this game, because i guarantee that if the game doesnât tell you to go there, then thereâs nothing there.
again, already touched on this point but one example i know is this. when you go to the energy plant to battle rose, or go to the roof to battle eternus, i expected to go back to it when the event was over to see if something was left behind or because iâd been locked in a cutscene and unable to explore before, that meant there would be something now. but nope. donât bother. even when you think you might be able to do something fun, donât try until the game points you in that direction itself. if something interesting is going to happen in the game, i assure you they will point it out for you.Â
6. itâs too easy. itâs....actually crazy that iâm even putting this as a point, because iâm a strict believer in making games playable for everyone. but itâs just....too much.
hard games disinterest me. if a game is renowned for itâs difficulty, then i will avoid it. i donât care if defeating dark souls is a badge of honor for your stubbornness or skill. i simply donât enjoy playing a game that makes me want to quit in frustration because i am not good at video games. i appreciated how easy the games have been in recent years because it makes it a lot easier for me to actually complete them and enjoy them, itâs why i have trouble getting into the earlier gens of pokemon.Â
but when it got to the point where after only about an hour or two of dynamax farming, by the time that i got round to the championships i was literally one shotting every single pokemon. even when i didnât have super effective moves. i was almost 20 levels ahead of the competition, and blasted through the whole thing in a total of 10 minutes battle time and 30 minutes dialog and cutscene time, with a 20 minute pause for a phone call.Â
i defeated leon with only very minimal struggle. i couldnât one shot all his pokemon, i will admit. i two shotted them. i went into the championship fully stocked up on potions and revival items and left with all of them. none of my pokemon fainted or even sustained major damage.Â
while satisfying feeling that youâre op enough to utterly annihilate your opponents, there comes a point where itâs just âwhy bother i know iâll winâ which kind of sucks.Â
7. the cut down pokedex will forever inject salt right into my veins. especially when they had the audacity to include one of the first starter pokemon, but not the other two. charizard is an okay pokemon but its overrated, nintendo please accept that.
sorry to charizard fans, but please acknowledge that itâs overrated. its design is basic, and already has multiple different forms. the fact that they passed over the opportunity for the creativity that dynamax venusaur or blastoise could give, for another basic dragon design is so annoying.Â
not to even mention the fact that they didnât even bother to keep the rest of the starter pokemon either. i vaguely remember one time some nintendo employee or big shot saying that the best thing about it is that every pokemon is at least one personâs favourite. the underused or underloved pokemon will always be ONE personâs favourite, and thatâs why you can get the whole pokedex. but yâknow fuck that philosophy in the name of getting the game out on time. when they could have very easily pushed the release date back. iâm lucky that most of my faves got included but i know that a fair amount did not. and iâm pissed.Â
8. the plot didnât exist until suddenly it did and then it made no sense.Â
9. i hate the fact that the team in this game were just delegated to fans. i understand the whole âfake outâ thing they might have been going for by getting the player to think that theyâd turn out to be bad, but no. it just sucks.Â
these two go so hand in hand, that iâm taking the time to address them together considering in every single previous game so far the team has had some HEAVY influence on the plot in one way or another. theyâre always linked to the legendary pokemon of the game and theyâre always included in the overarching plot, either by driving the player to act or subtly there.Â
i kept seeing team yell show up and trying to work out how they were going to join the plot. were they a cult doing Science Shit in the background trying to revive the legendaries? was marnie the leader of this cult and going through the league to distract people from her totally devious going-ons? or would it turn out that marnie though the team harmless but really it was a front for her relativeâs secret cult?Â
nope!!! they were annoying roadblocks who added literally nothing to the plot.Â
and when i realised that, it was the seventh gym battle and so far the only plot iâd glimpsed at was the mysterious explosions in hammerlocke city and the overarching tale of the sword and shield that had been obvious since literally the first time sonia started to talk about it. there had been no plot. there was literally no plot other than the gym battles which sonia and leon specifically called out to âleave this to the grownups, you two just focus on the gym challengeâ.Â
and when i got my eighth badge and was completing the equivalent of the elite four, i was still confused as FUCK because where the hell was the plot???? and then the whole weird ass âwe have to save leonâ from a meeting with.....a chairman? how about you wait just an hour jfc itâs not that bad? heâs not being held against his will? the chairman wasnât doing anything obviously evil or even hinted at?Â
the whole thing was vague and roseâs motivation was just ??????? i donât know???? i still donât exactly know what the whole deal was. it came out of nowhere and made. no. sense. it had completely lost me. along with the fact that they were suddenly introducing dynamax raids like we hadnât already been doing that so many times in the wild area????
which leads me to my next point.....sigh.Â
10. fucking. swordward and shieldbert. i???? literally. have no. words. (i do but theyâre super long so hmmm down below)
first things first, is that i hate everything about these characters. from their names, to their designs, to their motivations, to how theyâre handled in canon. it was shitty and while i had fun playing with the whole âthis is what a champion does after they beat the previous oneâ thing, it was just in general really bad.Â
like, i cannot get over how shitty their designs were. their hair was literally a sword and a shield. i kept thinking âwow swordward has a penis head that wiggles when he movesâ and couldnât take a single thing he said seriously. i literally wanted to weep at the horrible character design.Â
not to mention the suddenness of their whole schtick. âyeah weâre royalty and weâre ââââCELEBRITIESââââ even if none of you have heard of usâ. like what????? the fuck????
it just sort of pisses me off to an astronomical degree that this low quality shit was jammed into a pokemon game when they were getting so good at storytelling. it felt like game freak were hammering me with a club while singing âYOU PAID 50 WHOLE POUNDS FOR THIS IN PARTICULAR!!!â like,,,, thanks. thank you. thank you for waiting until after iâd finished the game to really hammer home that point.Â
which somewhat leads me to my last point that really just sums up the majority of my thoughts on the whole game:
11. a game worth about ÂŁ20 ($25) less than i paid for it. its a decent quality game, but not nearly nintendo quality.Â
if i knew what i knew about the game know, i wouldnât pay fifty fucking pounds for it. it physically pains me to spend more than ÂŁ30 in one sitting, that i actually winced while i was buying it even though i was being 100% optimistic that i was going to love it. at most iâd pay ÂŁ30 for it, but only then. itâs a good game to really distract you and power through but other than that, i donât see it as a game iâm going to come back to so i can complete the pokedex and i certainly am not going to buy the other game so i can play it again unlike how iâve done in the past with my favourite installments.Â
maybe iâm just picky, or i donât buy games often enough, but i really would not classify this as a quality installment in the pokemon franchise. if you get a free copy, or just the opportunity to play it for a few hours then fine itâs a great game. but not quite something you should want to spend your money on. but donât pirate it. thatâs a fast way to get bugs.
to sum this whole mess of a post up: immediately after finishing the game i said to myself ânow time to go play a REAL pokemon gameâ before booting up pokemon moon.
#long post#pokemon sword and shield#pokemon swsh#pokemon#shut up danni#wow this got LONG its literally 4k words#i got a little salty#ooooppps#i really wanted to like this game#i really really did because i hate being negative about pokemon#its one of the few series that i love with barely any faults#but this......this is just painful#i should be thankful on some level because it distracted me from the fact that i was in the process of rehoming my dog#but still there's just....so many things wrong with it.....#sigh#(pls give this post attention it took me an hour and a half to write)
