Man… the ending of EXU Calamity hit me right in the heart. I’m a DM in ttrpgs first and foremost, and watching Brennan and Liam dedicate the entire ending of the episode to Matt and the world he created… it hit me directly in my DMing heart. Matt unknowingly being the Avatar of the All-Hammer, the god who shaped modern Exandria as we know it, and being shown the wonder of his creation by Liam, the one who first pulled the group together for a silly little birthday one shot… it made me cry watching it and it’s making me cry writing this.

I know not everyone has Beacon and wouldn’t have seen it, but in the EXU Cooldown, one of the first things Brennan said “I hope it’s okay that I wrote you a love letter”. After all the flak and criticism the end of C3 got (not saying criticism is bad or it was unfounded though), I feel like this was the best possible gift anyone could have given Matt. This kind of honor towards his story and his world, Matt has more resolve than I ever could have since I would have just broke down sobbing on the spot if someone ever did that for my world. God damn Brennan, Liam, you absolute genius madmen 🩵🩵🩵.

There’s so much about the final I could have talked, but the ending was the most significant part of that episode, bar none.

I've finally finished Steeplechase and GOD it's so good. I truly love Justin DMing, and especially in a setting he clearly cares so much about. Discussions about the power of nostalgia in the hands of an enormous corporation profiting off of it, with added themes of identity and AI is just... really cool. You can tell these are subjects that he's deeply interested in. Not to mention the fascinating world building with the Buttercream, and just gradually adding in more and more unhinged stuff. The Woodimals. The saxophone guy. Deep dark. Naming so so many characters after basic objects. A creeping sense of unease and dread as you come to realize what's going on, especially with the Krystal with a K intros.

It's an incredible podcast and I'm so glad it exists.

They start texting and regulus eventually asks “wanna see how much I affect you~”

James replies with a pretty basic (but still art like) photo of his rock hard dick. Regulus wasn’t expecting him to be so big and girthy so he finds himself squeezing his thighs and getting wetter just looking at the picture. He sends James a photo of how wet he is for him and asks for James to tell him what to do. Regulus begs for James to send him a video of him cumming, needing to know what this Adonis sounds like.

“Fuck yes baby. So fucking good and all for me. Is that right love?” James sends as a voice note to help regulus along. Regulus finds himself responding out loud, as if James was actually there and could hear him. They keep talking and James keeps sending regulus money for customs. One day he asks how much it would be for a private video call and regulus just responds with “For you baby, it’s completely free. Call me at *phone number*”. Regulus knows he’s in love with this man and so he impulsively sends his phone number, hoping he’ll be able to finally see prongs’ face.

One thing leads to another and regulus finds out James is best friends with his long lost brother and lives like 15 minutes away.

Steve Harrington x Reader

Warnings: SFW, fluff, small mention of Steve's neglectful parents but don't worry, he's doing great!

As I'm sure we're all well aware, Steve's parents' home is big and empty and drafty and all together oppressive. Especially with the cold front that has turned Hawkins into an icy wasteland.

So I'm sure you aren't surprised to learn that Steve is not at his parents' house. No. Instead he has been holding court at your place with you and all your shared friends. The fire is going, kept fed in no small part by Steve and Eddie's combined efforts to one up each other with your alarmingly dull ax. Robin and Max have been baking all day in your cramped kitchen, keeping your poor old oven cranking to help heat up your small, shittily insulated home.

You have been working with Dustin and Mike on designing a new campaign that you're all going to begin playing once the sun goes down (Eddie gets a much needed, if not begrudging, break from DMing so he can play for once). Will, Lucas, and El are out braving the storm to acquire more snacks to keep you all going for the foreseeable future, because the cold weather has shown no indication of stopping anytime soon.

When Steve walks in, red faced and runny-nosed, with an armful of fresh firewood, he takes in the scene before him. You and the boys squabbling with Eddie as he tries to tell you that you've formatted your character sheets wrong. Max flustered and covered in flour as she barks at Robin for forgetting to put baking powder in the latest round of muffins (though Robin is doing a really bad job at hiding her laughter in the face of the red-head's fury).

It's all so...warm. In spite of the blistering cold outside, Steve feels himself heating up from his toes all the way to the tips of his ears. It gets so hot, so suddenly, that he drops the firewood and strips off his jacket as fast as possible.

You notice his sudden movements out of the corner of your eye and look over in time to notice the most peculiar look on his face. You abandon your current argument without so much as an excuse.

"Hey, I'm not finished criticizing you guys yet!" Eddie calls out after you. You throw a middle finger over your shoulder passively as Dustin and Mike dogpile on top of their shrieking dungeon master.

Steve watches you with misty eyes as you approach.

"What's going on over here, Mr. Harrington?" you ask softly. Steve stares down at you with an equally soft smile.

"It's really warm in here."

"Well yeah..." you hesitate, looking around. "I guess we've been over doing it maybe with the baking and the fireplace. Maybe we can cool it for a while - ,"

"No no!" Steve interrupts, grabbing you by the waist. You look back up at him to see that his soft smile has grown into a full grin. "Leave it. It's perfect."

You relax into his hold, your own arms winding up around his neck.

"You're an odd one, Steve Harrington," you quip. But he can tell by your answering grin that you understand where is mind is at.

It's cold outside. But your hearts are alight in here, amidst the glow of everyone you love.

(And some you'd like to lovingly punch. Ahem, Eddie Munson).

It's not just X; it could happen here too. My fucking god, a Transformers YouTuber almost did the unspeakable last night because of cyberbullying. Because people who claim they are being heroic are doing such terrible things. And they do it so damn fast.

(The YouTuber is more stable and safe at the moment)

You don't need to know the exact details, but the person made a post on X that was a little iffy. Not discriminatory to anyone, not an inappropriate picture or anything. The kind of thing that SHOULD have led to a discussion to change his opinion. And that's what the some other YouTubers and I did, we talked to him, and he regretted his words and changed his mind. Just like that. So fucking easy.

He wanted to write an apology and tell everyone he understood the issue now, but he was struggling to. His account was reported and suspended over and over. In the end, he did manage to write that apology on X and tell people he changed his opinion. That kind of thing can happen when we act patiently and try to guide people! But before then, other people were DMing him madly on Discord and X to say horrible shit, show gore, tell him to die. People were photoshopping a convicted criminal's face onto his profile pic. Friends severed ties without even talking to him. People doxxed him and someone left him a threatening phone call.

These people probably loved the excuse to do it. They would happily slap a label on someone then act dramatic about it. They pile on the hate because "that creator deserves it", they think.

How can you do any of the above and think you are a good person??

What on Earth happened to giving people the benefit of the doubt? Out of all the ways a statement could be interpreted, why do people choose the most negative instead of the most positive? When drama hits and your friend is involved, how can you leave without at least hearing the other side of the story? How can you forget that you may be harassing someone who has mental health or is neurodivergent?

It's like people love being mad. They want to put a bad label on someone, like some kind of "_ist", "_phobe", or a "p*do". They don't need much evidence before attacking. Here on Tumblr a while back, some people very eagerly wanted to harass me. They called me transphobic. The reality they didn't care to find out: I am trans, I make trans activist videos, I go on the front lines countering anti-trans protests in Canada while getting screamed at by conservatives for hours. Get real. If you are so quick to hate someone and label them, you were probably just eager to misinterpret anything they said to get a chance to be angry. You don't know them and you are not a sensible, fair person. They act like a pack of wolves if they can tell themselves it's justified. It is NOT justified. They should be ashamed. They are just bullies hiding behind a hero’s mask.

god. uh. myhouse.wad, huh? I have, frankly, way too many thoughts about this entire mod. Please bear with me as I try to ramble my way through them, I ended up going off under the read more.

I’m going to be honest, this game felt like an extended, emotional fetch quest for me until this point. Don’t get me wrong, I knew that all the items had emotional and memorial impact, but...this one got to me. This moment hit me like a fucking truck.

For those of you who don’t play Dungeon and Dragons, sessions get long. On average they can run anywhere between 4-6 hours, but I myself have played longer, with the longest taking the cake at almost a half day, or roughly 11 hours. A lot can happen in a session, and most of it is just...joking around. The phrase “roll for intercourse” is a reference to an age-old running gag of players trying to seduce an NPC for whatever reason. It’s funny. It happens so often it’s a meme.

But finding it here...it really hit me. This isn’t just a reference to a well-known meme. Tom and Steve sat down and played D&D together, spending multiple hours in a day to play sessions, likely with other players but always with each other. And this phrase? It stuck out, it’s a moment that stuck with Steve for one reason or another, and my only guess is to say it’s because it‘d become an inside joke. And...you can’t help but wonder what it was. If Steve had been DMing, or if he’d been the one trying to seduce the NPC much to Tom’s chagrin, or...what.

And that at the core is the devastating part of myhouse.wad. The more I sit and think about it, the more I think about it, the more I realize this map is chock full of inside jokes, and we as players will never understand them. Because it’s not meant for us. These are things we’ll never have context for because one of the people involved is gone now. And the more I think about it, the more the realization hit that this entire map is not a game and really, truly is a memorial.

Do you remember when we played with Legos together? Do you remember when we played video games? Drinking milkshakes in the basement, sharing a pop? Our inside jokes? Roll for intercourse. Pumpkin Rick. Shrek chasing after you. Do you remember when we got married? I do. The house does. The house loves you. I love you. I miss you.

This map reads like a conversation, someone reaching out to someone else. You can’t help but wonder who is reaching out to who, though.

You know, I was talking to some friends on Discord about this map, and one of them brought up something interesting that I agree with. myhouse.wad draws clear inspiration from House of Leaves, but there’s a distinct difference between them. They both have heavy themes of grief and closure, but where House of Leaves is mysterious because of the layers and layers of unreliable narrators, myhouse.wad is mysterious because of you’re only ever hearing one side of the conversation. House of Leaves makes me feel like I’m intruding on something that no human should ever know. myhouse.wad makes me feel like I’m hearing part of a conversation through a wall.

Either way, there is one thing that both works share: This is not for you. It never was.

You know, I kind of wonder what their D&D campaign was about, if this moment was enough to stick out as an inside joke. I wonder what their sessions were like. I hope they had fun.

Marineford goes from extremely tragic to hilarious if you think of it like a DnD complain.

Ace’s player and Luffy’s player are actual brothers.

Ace started playing in late high school / freshman year of collage his first campaign was with the spade pirates but the group fell apart because the other players got job/ went to different schools / just life.

But Ace loved his character and wanted to keep playing. His friend, who played Masked Deuce, wanted to keep playing as well but wanted his character to be more combated focused. So he created the character of Marcos. (Both doctors and first mates, both friends with Ace) They got some new friends and kept playing in the same world just with a new crew

Whitebeard’s player is definitely Marco’s players actual dad. They need another player and Whitebeard loves his son and was like “I’ll play!” He either knows nothing about the game or has been playing since the 80’s and is the most knowledgeable person at the table. There is no in between.

The DM is probably Shanks or Rayleigh. I like to think it’s Shanks and his level 20 character he’s had for years just pops up occasionally to solve problem that the party needs help with.

Anyhow Luffy has heard Ace talk about DnD for years but he doesn’t have any friends to play with. So when he goes to college it’s like his number one goal.

make friends play DnD.

(We will talk about the Strawhats chaos later)

So everything’s going great. Ace visited Luffy and joined in on a few of their sessions. Still plays Ace, he loves this character, he’s played him for like four years now. But he gets to know Luffy’s friends and joins them for a bit in Alabasta.

He goes back to his campaign and tells the whole group about Luffy (he has been for years but now he can talk about Luffy’s complain) and everyone wants him to bring Luffy around to play with them.

But then tragedy. The whitebeards have to disband, most of them are graduating, Marco’s player is going to med school it’s just going to be a long time before they can all sit down and play again.

So they decided to go out with a bang!

The Dm has Ace get captured and they plan this elaborate jail break for the party. But it just so happens Luffy is going to be on break at the same time as their last few sessions. And wouldn’t it be great if he joined them!

So the Dm (they are Dming both games god bless them) has the strawhats split up (they are all going on break and it’s a fun story reason for why they all won’t be together) then he pulls Luffy aside and is like, how do you feel about playing with your brother’s group? Luffy’s pumped he’s never been so excited.

So Luffy does all of impel down. Ace is there cheering him on and having fun role play at the same time. His friend Jinbei had wanted to try playing for a while so they gave him a character card and him and Luffy escaped Jail together.

But then we get to the actual Marineford season. It last for hours. There’s combat. There’s roll play. What none of the players knew, was that Whitebeard had approached the Dm about his character dying in combat protecting his kids. (He wanted this to be a memorable session for his son and his friends, they all cried, they loved it)

But then Ace get caught up in it all (this was not planed) and ends up getting his character killed. The table is in shock. There is no way that just happened!

Luffy is sobbing. His brother just sacrificed the character he had played for four years to save his character. He knows how much Ace means to his brother. He’s an actual reck. He had loved Ace to.

Ace’s player is upset, he did love that character, but it’s part of the game. It happens. He’s more upset about how hard Luffy’s taking it.

After the session the two brothers are hanging out. Luffy is apologizing for getting Ace killed and his brother, who’s played for years, and wants to make his brother laugh, says no worries want to help me make a new character?

So they spend the break writing a new character and working them into Ace and Luffy’s back story.

Later when the strawhats are all back together (breaking the news to them that Ace’s character had died was wild!) they are playing and making their way to Dressrosa. A new friend, Law, has joined them. And he is being so serious about his character’s serious back story.

Then Ace’s player roles in like “can I join for a session or two?” All the Strawhats are thrilled, they had a great time playing with him during the Alabasta arc. The Dm says sure and asks about his character.

The two brother’s just smirk at each other and the player introduces his new character: Sabo

They explain the back story, this is Luffy’s OTHER big brother. The strawhats are dying. Law is over them, this is serious! The Dm is just exasperated “you don’t have the Mera Mera fruit.” He’s trying to drive home that this is a different character. Ace/Sabo’s player agrees and they start playing.

Except the Dm loves to troll and brings in the Mera Mera fruit. And everyone already knows what’s about to happen.

Sabo eats the fruit and his player yells “thank god” throws Sabo character sheet to the side. And before anyone can ask why he pulls back out Ace’s character sheet crosses off Ace’s name and writes Sabo next to it (he also raises his intelligence stat)

Character name: Ace Sabo

“I’m back baby!”

I just love that anytime he pops in him and Luffy just say the most ridiculous things about their back stories.

“Remember how Ace had a tattoo of his name spelled wrong to show that he’s not book smart. Well that was a lie. He did it to represent Ace, Sabo, Crybaby, and Edward Newgate.” Ace/Sabo’s player says with Luffy nodding aggressively besides him.

Whitebeard player find out. Finds it all hilarious and is flattered Ace/Sabo’s player brought his character into their nonsense.

Every now and then Marco and Ace/Sabo will come play at the same time and Marco always ends up calling Sabo Ace for the whole session.

dont even remember where I said that but on god I will deliver. for the sake of simplicity we're sticking with fantasy ttrpg classes/character types, your d&d and pathfinder and related fare. this is probably going to inevitably just turn into "what kind of ttrpg player is each yutag like, to me" but it's all good. let's goooo

Yugi: kind of crazy that we basically have a canon answer for this with Monster World, huh? I love that he played a half-elf, he has huge 'elf and the like' enjoyer vibes. Definite inclination towards spellcasters, "Beast Tamer" makes me easily see him making some kind of ranger or druid character that makes heavy use of magic and animal/monster befriending. Preps pretty thoroughly, gives character a pretty substantial amount of lore and backstory, probably has DMing experience so he always tries to be respectful to the gamemaster and what theyre trying to do (providing it's not. trying to kill you with demon magic) and likes to tie his own character into the lore of the world as best he can. Spitballs character ideas with Atem. (You know Atem's characters have Dense backstory and are roleplayed with the immense gravity of an oscar-winning drama.)

Jaden: ZERO prep, just decided to join the game two hours ago and maybe skimmed the rulebook at most. Whatever class he plays he's playing that thing fast and loose and way sillier than the DM anticipated for this game. Warrior/monk/physical fighter build type enjoyer, plays a furry race like a tabaxi cuz they Look Cool and Fun, definitely shows up with a jokey joke character named Boots McScoots or something that everyone gets attached to bigly by the end. Kind of player just happy to be having fun with his friends ^_^ *inadvertedly blowing up every possible plan the DM had in mind for this campaign* (Yubel writes a five page doc of insane traumatic backstory if given the chance to make a character themself)

Yusei: puts a lot of thought and care into his character, even if they're ultimately a little bit of a self-insert (hey aint nothin wrong with that.) Probably gravitates towards something like an artificer, wizard, or a paladin, firmly something in the 'good' end of the morality spectrum. Could get really into complicated magic systems I feel; reads over spell lists and carefully picks out what he thinks could be the most beneficial for the upcoming situations. A bit shy wrt RPing his character, no silly voices or anything, but plays his character with so much heart they feel real and lived in right out the gate. I feel like he could really vibe with playing a dwarf, dont @ me

Yuma: Rolls up with a big shiny Super Cool Overpowered character he loaded way too many bells and whistles onto despite being told REPEATEDLY that everyone was starting at level 1 and is subsequently crumbling into little pieces over having to scale them waaaay down. Absolute warrior/fighter preference, you look me in the eyes and you tell me Yuma has the attention span or desire to sit and do complicated magic management he wants to swing cool sword and fight bad guy. Has trouble picking what sort of fantasy race to play and ends up with, like, a gnome. Gets really into the game and playing his character, there's probably not a Huge amount of deep backstory to them and probably has poor group synergy but he's giving it his 110%. (Astral is doing some insane dual-class magic and math heavy character he thinks about very much outside of the game, and is always tweaking them and excited to bring them to life.)

Yuya: I think Yuya's the only yutag I could see actually trying to play a more evil-aligned character--I don't know if he'd actually be able to RP them well, but I think he'd like the idea of playing a character very Unlike Himself. Gets a little caught up trying to come up with a 'cool' enough backstory and ends up with something kind of barebones. Probably a little scattered actually at the table, but you know his character is Loud and Full of Personality. It's bard or bust with this kid, cmon now. I feel like he's playing either a twinky whimsical elf or a dragonborn he thought really really hard about the design of. (re: the other yuboys: Yuto's character has 25 pages of lore and backstory that is full of tragedy and vengeance and redemption. Yugo's playing some funnyguy he came up with in ten minutes. Yuri makes some big show out of implying he's just going to play a violent freak that's here to dissemble the DM's entire campaign but then he gets genuinely caught up in a political intrigue sideplot and starts conspiring with the DM for a grand epic twist with his character)

Yusaku: now THIS is the guy who spent hours quietly researching the best subclasses and spells and builds for whatever particular party his character is meant to slot into; every choice he makes for his character is much-deliberated and carefully chosen. Shows up at the table with a well-balanced human paladin/similar swordwielder with spell slots on deck. Doesn't really RP per say, but definitely slips into the Playmaker vocal range when announcing choices and actions, and his character has such a powerful cool as fuck aura it's almost a little intimidating to play alongside them at first. His character is selfless does nothing out of malice because why wouldn't it be? That's his natural first choice. (Ai razzes yusaku nonstopt for playing the NERD ROLEPLAY FANTASY game for NERDSSSS but if you sat him down in a oneshot he'd bust out his tumblr sexyman-ass flamboyant half-elf half-tiefling bard (who's also a vampire) character that he DEFINITELY did NOT make months ago waiting for the chance to play him, noooo no sirree)

and that’s a wrap on campaign 3! emotions post incoming. yes, I did get a drink just to toast the end of it, and yes, that is a little crocheted Beau (I did not make her!) who kept me company through watching m9, and who I got out for the bell’s hells finale too.

like lots of folks, I’ve had my complaints about c3, and particularly in the last year, life’s been Difficult and I struggled to keep up the whole time, but��god, I love these characters (all of them), I love this stupid game, and even though I’ve not been watching from the very beginning, it’s still been a Journey.

I started watching critical role with m9 in 2019, which doesn’t feel like that long ago but was (apparently!) six years ago, in a terrible room in a pretty shitty living situation. I’d just moved away from all my friends, was getting my teaching qualification, and was tired and broke and lonely. in the intervening years, a tonne has happened: I’ve moved house a few times and now have a (much much nicer!) flat with my partner where I can regularly host people I love, I’ve gotten married, I’ve qualified and been teaching for five years, I’ve gotten a lot better at dealing with some bits of my brain and body and inevitably had more things come up, but that’s okay, I’ve come out-out (if you know what I mean). and I’ve met so many wonderful people both in and outside fandom, and gone to cons, and written fanfic, and participated in exchanges, and connected with critters in this community, and even attended the m9 London live show, which was incredible in so many ways. watching critical role in the stressful, lonely, busy year that was 2019 was what gave me the courage to start DMing, and I’ve been DMing for some of my best friends for the last five years. and that, in itself, is a wonderful thing to have, and I’m so grateful to all of it.

I’ve always been a fucking nerd, and I’ve been in fandoms for most of my life. but critical role has been a special one for me. I’ve found so much fan connection, so much inspiration and joy to create, so much comfort in this show over the last six years. it’s been there with me for so many hours over lockdowns and commutes and friday-evening-post-work watching and while I’m crying and while I’m happy and while I’m reading fanfic on my phone at work and while I’m singing “your turn to roll” with 12k people at wembley.

so yeah. it may not have been ten years for me, but god. it’s been such a wonderful journey. and watching the finale last night/today and getting to see those threads come together and to watch the cast tell ends to stories that have been in the making for ten years or more—it has been lovely, and very emotional. and again, for all my issues with c3—I have had a wonderful time, and it was a really enjoyable finale.

I don’t know what comes next for exandria and for longform critical role campaigns, but this *did* feel like a bit of an ending, and yknow what? no matter what comes next, I’m not mad about that. it’s been such a good ride, critters. I’m very grateful I got to be part of it along with you all. I cannot fucking wait for divergence.
