Xiao paces his breathing as he leads the couple through the storm, breaking the strong winds using his Anemo powers.

"Stay close," Alhaitham says, taking his wife's hand into his and walking in front of her with his cape up to protect her from any scattered raindrops. The group moves toward one of the abandoned huts, slowly but steadily. They see a familiar pillar glowing with the yellow shine of Geo energy blocking the hut's entrance... and Coviello, laying unconscious beside the pillar, evidently knocked out by the archon.

"Zhongli! We're here!" Kurisu shouts, and the pillar crumbles. She kneels to check on Coviello, while Alhaitham and Xiao goes inside to find Zhongli cradling Meirin against his chest.

Zhongli stands and places Meirin in Xiao's arms. "I gave her the antidote," he says, "but she will need Baizhu's care."

"Yes, Rex Lapis. But I only have the energy to teleport once. I'll bring her while you handle the remains," Xiao replies.

The archon nods, and Xiao disappears with a green smoke.

"Can you bring the assistant to another hut with Risu? I will need some space to destroy this thing completely," Zhongli says. Alhaitham nods and goes outside.

The ground rumbles as Zhongli unleashes his powers to destroy every single grain of Havria's remains. A shockwave emanates from the dilapidated hut as the dead god's remains dissipate into thin air, momentarily breaking the storm.

The archon sighs in relief—

"What's up, Mr. Zhongli?"

He turns toward the familiar cheerful voice—far too cheerful for his taste—that comes from the hut's entrance.

"Care to spar with me?"

a level smile stayed on the ex-archon's lips. the golden polearm heeded to its master's call and materialized for blackened fingers to grip onto its shaft. erratic gold lines pulsed in rapid successions as the man stepped forward, slow and steady, steps as heavy as the mountains itself.

"very well."

the puddles reverberated as the ground growled like a dragon's snarl.

"but do not think for a second that my mercy equates to forgiveness."

"The Archons?" His tone alone makes it clear that the relation to their current topic eludes him. Even so, Petrae pauses for a moment, thinking about how to answer. The gods were a subject that he'd never much focused on during his time with his master, and the five centuries that he'd spent in Durin's stomach afterwards had... hardly cultivated much faith in them. Even now, Petrae doubts that they'd had much influence in the mercy of his eventual release.

No, that had simply been luck on his part. He has nothing and no one to thank for that, save perhaps the passage of time.

"I feel as if... they are indifferent to much of the suffering in the world, at best," the scholar says slowly, choosing his words carefully while his volume drops somewhat, "for if they were not so, would there not be less of it in the world? Or perhaps none at all?"

Admittedly, he's a bit anxious about voicing that particular opinion out loud and hopes that Baizhu isn't offended by his view. It's hard for him to believe otherwise though - if the gods cared, would they have not intervened when his mother had left him to die in the stomach of another of her creations? Saved him from that suffering?

"Otherwise, I... do not think of them much, honestly. I did not have the most... religious of upbringings. Why do you ask... ?"

Baizhu is nothing if not OBSERVANT, and Petrae's struggle to find his words gives the pharmacist enough time to mentally notate a few TELLING reactions to his own utterings of favor. Was it wrong to feel DELIGHTED by the way he could cause such a flustered response ? Wrong and cruel, to some small degree, mayhap, but it is not as if he plans to TEASE Petrae for it.

It shan't keep him from GRINNING amidst his observations, however, and to allow that amused gleam within snake slit eyes to shine on for just a TAD longer, too.

" he purrs, smile curling wider, his own chest and cheeks warming ( latter, hidden beneath a skillfully risen hand, and a tilt of his head to the side ). He understands this topic may sound MISPLACED, considering the lack of context leading up to it, but Baizhu plans to make his reasoning for the inquiry known, and its relation to their prior discussion, once Petrae has provided his answer.

The snail is graciously accepted! She does not know where to put it so Baizhu will not take it, so she opts to simply hold it in her cupped hands. Should she find some leaves for it or something...? Come to think of it, she isn’t quite sure how to take care of a snail. Perhaps there’s someone she can ask, so she can best take care of her new friend.

and we are now thinking about Baizhu during the Osial crisis because the Pharmacy is at one of the highest points in Liyue (you literally see it as you’re entering the city) and he’s probably going to collapse from both: buffing the traveler from such a far away place/using his vision to protect those within the pharmacy he may not be the strongest of adepti- but he did make a contract to heal and keep the people of Liyue safe, so that’s exactly what he’s going to do.

healthy reminder while it takes 30-45 minutes for Baizhu’s venom to work... It only takes 1:24 to kill with a full dose of venom, but with a full bite (including venom) it takes 1:07 to kill someone....

Baizhu Headcanons~

One of the weaker/weakest Adepti, Baizhu resided within Quingce village but always made an effort to travel to see his teacher, Guizhong and learn about humans, what they do and how to care for them. He already cared for the people within the village he watched over- this would only further help him down the line.

Somehow survived the Archon war but was absolutely devastated upon hearing about those who they had lost. Forged a contract with Rex Lapis to continue living alongside humans- even as an adeptus, in his contract it stated he’d care for their ills and their ailments, to look over the sick and those in need. Masquerading as a human and not a god, in return- to be there should Rex Lapis need his assistance despite being the weakest of the Adepti (Fragility and all)

Somewhere down the line, Baizhu came across Qiqi the Zombie, taking her in under his contract but never letting her in on his adeptal status. He simply let the girl believe he was a human (Like he does with everyone.)

Changsheng had become his companion after Havria perished, sometime in that timeframe he had come across the snake in the Sal Terrae and they became inseparable.

All the time among humans turned Baizhu into a rather shady character- no one truly trusted him but his medicines and prescriptions worked wonders (Even if they were bitter and EXPENSIVE), he simply does his job and upholds his contract.

The Bubu Pharmacy has been around since the beginning of Liyue Harbor and Baizhu has been the owner since it’s establishment- even when people question how he hasn’t stopped working he simply says it’s in his contract.

It’s unknown how old he is but he’s quite old, even for an adeptus (Considering he also knew Guizhong). He doesn’t like saying his age.

Baizhu’s always been one of the weaker adepti, so much so that he can’t wield any weapons that aren’t a catalyst because of his fragility. How he got his vision is also a mystery, but he knows how to use it should he find himself in a fight.

When he’s ready, he will tell Qiqi that he’s an adeptus- but right now he’s content with her not knowing.
