𝐏𝐇𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐈𝐏𝐀 𝐆𝐑𝐄𝐆𝐎𝐑𝐘 𝐒𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐄 𝐐𝐔𝐎𝐓𝐄𝐒 𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐏𝐈𝐋𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒 𝐏𝐀𝐑𝐓 𝐓𝐖𝐎.
All sentences are taken from different books from Phillipa Gregory, specially her series about the historical fiction setting of the war of roses and the tudors era. Change names, locations, pronouns and nouns as you see fit for your own liking. Some of these have slight foul language or involve insuation of sexual situations. Please beware. This is part two. (part one).
You are my joy. You are worth tens of thousands.
The art of happiness is being content with what you have.
Bless you my daughter, and may you remain pure in heart and get your desires.
I want my husband to love me with a passion, like in a troubadour tale, like a knight.
Ah, my dear, you are a good wife. You are my beauty. You are my only love.
Another husband, another new house, another new country, but I never belong anywhere and I never own anything in my own right.
Life is long, and if a woman survives, she can take her pleasures one way or another.
My advice to you, as you go to your husband, is never to trust him and never love him more than he loves you.
This is a generation of men accustomed to warfare, inured to danger and familiar with cruelty.
Last time I danced in these rooms it was the Christmas feast and I was wearing a dress of silk.
I have the Sight, I should have seen it all, but some things are too dark to forsee.
When a country is at war, cousin against cousin, brother against brother, no boy is safe.
People always make up stories about princesses. It comes to us with the crown.
Good God, I could take you in my arms right now.
There is no one who loves peace more than a soldier.
A troubadour to a distant mistress.
Every woman should marry for her own advantage since her husband will represent her.
The castle will seem very quiet and strange without you here.
We may be of the same family, but that is the very reason why we are not friends, for we are rivals for the throne.
Her confidence is extraordinary, her impertinence unforgivable, her words terribly true.
I believe that to be a free woman is to be both passionate and intelligent; and I am a free woman at last.
She doesn't realize yet though men go to war it is the women who suffer--perhaps more than anyone.
They are a couple in love, and anyone but a fool would see it is simply that, nothing more- and certainly nothing less.
We are Plantagenets - we dine on a diet of betrayal and heartbreak.
One little boy, and he a bastard.
The queen sees me coming, turns toward us and waits, with a killer's patience, for me to reach the chancel steps.
I am the daughter of a water goddess. I am a woman with water in her veins and power in her breeding.
I am not defeated by a boy with a newly won crown, and no man will ever walk away from me certain that he won’t walk back.
Compared with the rest of us she was silver, while we were pewter, a common mixture of lead and tin.
I was born to be Queen of England and mother of the next King of England. I have to fulfill my destiny, it is my God-given destiny.
I will stand up and speak in my own voice and no man will ever silence me again.
Affection is not important to you, nor to me. You want power Margaret, power and wealth; and so do I.
A woman of sense would marry only for the improvement of her family. Only a lustful fool dreams every night of a marriage of love.
All this is always for nothing.
Her heart has to break and her spirit has to break if she is to be any use to her family.
Your son is heir to an enormous fortune and name. Someone would be bound to bid for you him and take him as his ward.
Your son is heir to an enormous fortune and name. Someone would be bound to bid for you him and take him as his ward.
It's not an easy dance she's leading.
Bed, Wife.
You look as if you would eat me up.
I cannot think how to sate my desire for you. I think I will have to keep you prisoner here and eat you up in little cutlets, day after day.
But you would not get out till you were with child.
It is easier to take a country into war than to bring it to live at peace.
When you are still and thoughtful you are as lovely as the statues they are carving in Italy.
Jane had gone to pray for the dead queen, Anne would dance on her grave.
I have a longing for you, Lady Elizabeth Grey, that I have never felt for any woman before.
Come to me, I beg you, come to me. It could be my last wish. Will you come to me tonight?
I cannot be your mistress. I would rather die than dishonor my name. I cannot bring that shame on my family.
This is my marriage, and I want my wife in my bed.
Learning is an ornament to a good woman, not a distraction.
I would rather see you dead at my feet than dishonored.
What if the king is killed in battle?
I have loved you honorably as a knight should do his lady, and I have loved you passionately as a man might a woman.
I am not defeated by a boy with a newly won crown.
It's not magic. It's what any slut does if she has her wits about her.
He was such a happy boy, and happiness is not memorable.
I have a right to you, as your betrothed husband.
He has to marry a princess.
You have married a man who is going to die in his bed, preferably after making love to the most beautiful woman in England.
I will make sure that the most beautiful woman in your eyes is always me.
If you hate a woman, the first thing you destroy is her reputation.
Don't waste your courage on hating him. Keep yourself to yourself. And keep up your courage.
Where have I offended you?
And now I want love. Lust is no good for me. I want love. His love.
She can be pious, she can be learned, she can be witty and wise and beautiful.
And swore that whatever the obstacles before me, I should be Queen of England.
My chamber. Come at once.
It seems that we have to be married.
So now we are going to consummate our betrothal.
Let’s dance for the Queen of the May!
My mother does not need your good opinion.
If I burned them, I became as one of those who think that ideas are dangerous and should be destroyed.
From the moment she could talk she had been taught to guard her tongue.
I gave my womanhood to you. Tell me, in what way have I offended you? What have I ever done which was displeasing?
But don’t run too fast. Remember he has to catch you.
Nobody in this world will ever call me Mrs. Fool.
You can always tell a pretty girl by the way she walks. A pretty girl walks like she owns the world.
I thought that our marriage vows had moved your heart. I thought that you were resting your head on my shoulder for affection. Fool that I am.
I adore your hair, I like to see it loose.
I am as envious of her as she is of me. But I have seen her rise and rise.
Because I dare not look at you, because if I did, every man and woman at court would sell at that in my eyes.
Because I can't sleep for thinking of you. Because I burn up with desire for you.
You’re a girl from the House of Lancaster. You cannot fall in love with the heir to the House of York unless he is king victorious.
Child, you cannot change a king, you can only make him laugh.
What will happen when I am old and I can dance no more?
She seems not to have a seat of her own but she must borrow mine.
The queen is right. The queen is always right.
I’m not a girl, afraid of the unknown, I am a woman; I can face fear, I can walk towards it.
And we hardly ever speak of her. It is as if we cannot bring ourselves to speak of her as dead.
A lady will find her defenders. The men around you will speak for you if needs be.
She can speak three languages, but she can tell the truth in none of them.
She never thought when she overthrew a queen that thereafter all queens would be unsteady.
What if I don’t want an unwilling bridegroom, a pretender to the crown, who won his throne through disloyalty and betrayal?
His is a rule of terror. He makes us afraid of imaginary enemies so we don’t guard ourselves against him and against our government.

Description: y/n explores a building her family used to own with her best friend only to find not something but someone inside.
Word Count: 782
Notes: mature language, first person POV, use of nicknames “honey” “dear”, annoyance at best friend
part 1 | part 2
“What are we doing here y/n?”
“Shhh will you?” In the dead of night my best friend and I wander in the woods to take a peek at the old hotel my family used to own. When I found the maps and pictures in our attic, I knew I had to learn more. And what better place to figure it out than the building itself. My best friend knows this yet she still remains confused, scared, and worried. I wish she had a little faith in me.
So what if we were searching out in the dark, it made the whole experience more thrilling for what could possibly be a waste of time. She keeps voicing her concerns and worries like I never heard her the first time and I had to admit what was first cute, was now annoying.
Finally stepping up to the building I reach into my pocket and retrieve the old key hoping the locks haven’t been changed. And just my luck, they haven’t. We step into the dust covered and pitch black foyer, using our flashlights to find our way around. I have no clue what exactly I am looking for, but I know there is something here for me, waiting for me.
“Can you just hurry up? It feels bad in here.” Her voice penetrates the silence, erasing the god awful ringing along with it.
“Feels bad?” I ask, wondering what exactly she means as I have never felt more calm and at peace in a building. Nothing about this feels sketchy or wrong, it feels like I was meant to be here.
“You don’t get a bad vibe about this? Like there could be ghosts here for all we know. Maybe even worse, you seriously don’t feel it?” She rambles as we continue through the building making it into the large sitting area that seems to have held a bar as well.
I sigh and turn to face her growing tired of her complaints, “I feel nothing, my family owned the building and maybe still do. I just want to know more about it, and I actually feel like I belong here. If I would have known you were goi-“
“Y/n.” She cuts me off as fear overtakes the features of her face, widening her eyes into a size I had never seen before. “B-“ she gulps, “behind you.”
Without second guessing I turn my head to look over my left shoulder and instantly make eye contact with a strikingly perfect man who held a sinister smile on his face. One that should make any sane person feel immense fear and want to find the nearest and quickest escape. Instead a smile pulls its way across my lips, tugging them just enough to show this odd loving feeling I have within my body.
I have never met this man before in my life, but just the presence of him around sends dopamine and serotonin to course through my veins as if I had injected drugs. This man was perfection personified whether that was the universal truth or simply my own opinion, it didn’t matter. I have read about soulmates in books of fiction, wishing such thing were real and right now I think it is.
He moves slowly behind me and I turn my head to my right with a smile still on my face to meet his eyes again. “Hi, honey.” I say so simply as if this man had been in my life for decades and it was a common greeting for us.
“Dear, I’ve been waiting for you.” His voice sends chills across my skin raising bumps along the surface as it travels through me. The name, it felt so normal that it didn’t even cross my mind.
“What the fuck.” I hear my best friend whisper but I don’t even acknowledge her as my attention is entirely wrapped in him. His sharp, sinful eyes captivate me entirely. His smile sends euphoria running through my heart, increasing the speed to show me how happy it is.
His arms wrap around my waist and pull me back into him and it’s as if my whole body was submerged in gold. I felt priceless, cared for, loved. How could a man I have never met before make me feel ways I could only ever dream about. “What took you so long?”
“I’m sorry honey, how long have you been waiting?” I close my eyes as I lean into him more embracing the feel of his skin against mine, his chin on my shoulder, his breath tickling my neck, and his arms holding me tighter at the name.
“Too long. Way too long.”

Things from the Bible
“Please father forgive me for I have sinned” Sitting in front of the priest, I put my hands in my lap toying with the hem of my skirt. Raising my head up ever so slightly I could see the small cross around his neck. The silence was deafening only having the slightest sound from the ticking clock that sat on his desk, the only voice that could be heard was the sound of my own self-conscious telling me to say something. Opening my mouth to speak I hear him speak first.
“Own up to your sins and say it out loud for God’s forgiveness” His voice deep with seriousness made me look up at him, I usually would talk with one of the nuns but Father was my last resort. He was a very scary looking man, the rumors about him only made him look scarier. I nod my head at him as I slightly clutched the cross around my neck “um..well I’ve been having thoughts again.” Avoiding his gaze I looked around the room for something I could look at before saying what I was about to say.
“It’s rude to not look at the person you’re talking to.” The vibrations of his voice echoed in my ear. I could hear him standing up, the sound of his footsteps thumping against the hardwood floor of the office stopping at the window on the left side of the room. He closed the blinds and turned on a small lamp that sat on his desk illuminating the room with its bright light.
I watched him walk over to the bookshelf and pull out a bible, coming back over to me he dropped the heavy book on the wooden desk “Read chapters Matthew 5:28 it talks about those thoughts you so famously have” both of his hands on the desk his necklaces dangling on the side of my face, I could hear his slow yet steady breathing in my ear as I opened the book, and flipped through the contents of the chapters.
“Chapters Matthew 5:28.. um it says” I make sure to read it in my mind before saying it out loud, for some strange reason I looked over at him just to actually see how close he was to me. Jumping slightly there he was staring directly into my eyes, it was as if he knew about my thoughts before I even got to tell him myself. The more I stared at him the more I realized how big Father Shiba was.
“Don’t just sit there and look stupid read it.” Father Shiba’s voice sounded annoyed, so I looked over at the Bible verse. His hand quickly covered it “no you already proofread it now say it” the palms of my hands grew sweaty from nervousness “But Father if I may we haven’t really gone over this” his eyebrows furrow the vein on his forehead showing visible from his impatience in my stalling.
Shutting up I tried my hardest to remember what I just read “But I say to you—um.. that everyone…” stumbling over the words I felt my body jerk out of the chair I sat in, letting a quick yelp I felt something latch onto my throat. My reflexes weren’t fast enough to comprehend what just happened to me, a sharp pain could be felt on my arm as I looked around the room.
“Did you know y/n the eyes are the gateway to the soul.” Listening to him I looked into his eyes, his hand around my neck squeezed tighter, my free hand grabbed his hand trying to pry it away. His body towering over mine, he backed me up against his desk. Vision blurred from the lack of airflow and now being blocked from my tears.
“Please—I’m so sorry” his body language showed no signs of being forgiving. He quickly overpowered me shoving me onto the desk “Tell me is the temptation getting to you again? I thought I took care of these thoughts last time.” Sobbing I felt his knee pushing open my legs, his hand let go of my arm.
Taiju’s Pov
“Lord please forgive me for I am about to sin..” I looked down at the smaller woman, my grip still tight around her neck. Leaning down I took in her smell, she smelled pure like lavender leaving a soft aura of silence, devotion, and serenity. Looking at her face made the bulge in my pants twitch hastily.
Tears scattered down her cheeks, as I sat back up I noticed her clutching tightly onto her cross losing my grip from her neck. I look down at her skirt, lifting it up slowly. “temptation is what all sinners like you are going to hell for, do you wanna go to heaven y/n?” I looked at her nod her head yes “yes father I wanna go to heaven”
Listening to her voice so pure and beautiful like music to my ears, letting go of her neck she let out a deep breath coughing as I looked down at her. “Is doing this worth going to hell over” I looked in between her legs a soft wet spot coated her panties.
Grabbing her face forcing her to look at me I spoke softly as I stared down at her “You’re not stupid so don’t play stupid games with me You’re a slut y/n and sluts like you who commit sins like adultery burn in the deepest pits of hell” My thumb pressed against her clothed clit, rubbing the fabric on the bud slowly.
She whimpered when I changed directions from circling to up and down “God didn’t bring you back to me y/n, put you in this position, made you have those thoughts and feelings. It was Satan, I’m only doing what God tells me too—you have been tainted.” her eyes laid on the ceiling and both hands now clutching onto her cross repeating the last word I spoken “I have been tainted”
Moving her panties to the side I used her slick coating to slip my fingers in slowly, I watched as her mouth opened and her back arched against my desk. “I’ll fix you..because God told me to fix you y/n you’ve been tainted by satanic Spirits” she grinds on my fingers her eyes low “this isn’t right Father…” I let out a deep sigh.
I couldn’t believe she had the audacity to fix her lips to say something like that, quickly grabbing her face squeezing her cheeks, I leaned into her spreading her legs opened as I kept pumping my fingers into her using my thumb to stimulate her delicate clit “this isn’t right Father” I mocked her tone staring her right in the eyes “If it isn’t right then why do you keep inching your legs open for more? Why are you grinding on my finger Y/n?”
She stammered and hesitated to give me an answer to my non ending questions making her cry again, repeating the same words over and over again. “I am tainted”
Eyes red and puffy she nodded her head as her eyes looked at me “I wanna be saved…please I can’t go to hell Father— please I don’t wanna be tainted anymore please save me” she sounded scared clutching that cross I almost started to feel bad for her.
Y/n’s Pov
his words seemed harsh yet true, after the first time; he's helped me as much as he could, I feel as if I'm throwing all my forgiveness away just to feel his touch on my skin, but he was built up to provide and help the sinned. I wanted him to myself, I needed him to be mine. “Father—Taiju..” I wanted to feel his presence in me, his fingers hooking inside me cutting off my speech.
Moaning as his fingers pumped in and out of me, my hands started to hurt from all of the pressure that I inflicted from clinging to my cross. I wouldn’t dare let go in fear of being tainted any further, his finger pressed that same spot that he touched last time.
Arching my back more, my eyes met with the huge painting of Jesus. It felt as if he was judging me, my eyes watered from the feeling of my climax edging closer “I’m so close..” I said as I let out a deep sigh, I was almost there before the sensational feeling suddenly came to an halt.
“Sit up” Taiju said as he took his fingers out of me feeling a little disappointed I sat up and looked at him “Why did you stop? I thought you wanted to help me.” My voice sounded annoyed and bitchy. His eyes glared at me “I thought god said to help” before I could get the rest of my sentence out, a stinging pain on my cheek, tears beginning to fall again as I looked at him.
“You dare question me?? You question God's judgment of me? Fine then stay tainted and burn in hell” his voice was loud and strong, it looked as if he was turning away from me. Hopping off the desk I got on my knees and started begging. “Please don’t leave me here I won’t question you again- Taiju Please just save me from being tainted” I held onto his pants legs staring at my cross dangling in front me.
I felt my body being lifted off the ground as I was placed back on the desk but this time I met eyes with the same painting. “Don’t you dare question my judgment about what God has me to do.” His whole body weight pushed up against me making me nod in agreement with him, I didn’t speak much after that slap.
Touching the side of my face where he slapped me felt weirdly warm but has a numbing effect on it. I’m sure I’ll feel the pain later on in the day, his weight lifted off of me and my skirt being lifted up again, my panties hanging onto my ankle, I heard his pants unbuckle and unzip. An airy drop from his pants could be heard as they fell to the floor.
His fingertips were rough as he grabbed my waist, he slowly lifted my leg up onto to the desk “I want you to think about the sin you have committed by coming here today y/n” he slowly pushed inside of me I heard small grunts and groans, I couldn’t look at that painting anymore so I held my head down.
Taiju’s Pov
She felt warm on the inside. I felt bad for lying to her but I needed this more than she needed it, I watched as she held her head down while I pushed my length inside her. She too was looking at the painting, almost judging me for lying to the girl, but I didn’t care about that. I wanted her for myself, to not be judged by others.
I wanted to be the only one to touch her, I pushed myself into her fully groaning in the process, she was clenching around me already “lord forgive me for this..” I whispered quietly as I stiffed into motion. Her moans sounded like moans of an Angel, giving me the momentum to make her finish.
I parted her ass with my hands and watched my cock disappear and reappear as I thrusted in her “Taiju..save me from this sin..” my name rolled off her tongue so smoothly, I liked that sound. I only liked it when she said it. I was zoned out. I didn't even notice I picked up speed, huffing I pushed her head into the desk making her moan louder.
The sound of skin slapping together quickly increased, I couldn’t control myself, drilling deeper into her, grunting I grabbed her hair pulling her closer to me, wrapping my hand around her neck I made her look at the painting. I sat my head on her shoulder “you’re doing this for him.. so look at it and beg for his forgiveness.” I was close and I could tell she was close as well. She clenched around me like crazy.
3rd person Pov
Y/n held onto the desk as Taiju’s grip tightened around her neck, pounding into her cunt she choked on her own moans as she tried to speak. Both looking at the painting, Y/n finally reached her max. Legs weak she cried as she asked for forgiveness “Lord please forgive me for all of my sins… I am a sinner and I don’t deserve your forgiveness but please forgive me” she begged as her orgasm took over her body.
Taiju was satisfied with her performance and came to his max as well, the sensation in his sack came quickly. He held her tighter, shoving himself in her deeper, moaning together as the sounds of their climax’s rhythm began flowing through the air, the both ended the night finishing together.

Rules: Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass this onto other writers. Let’s spread the self-love 💖
sympathy, won't you come around?
“Oh god.” Steve turns, head on a slow swivel, looking around. He knows this alleyway. He knows this street, the buildings, tall and laden with clotheslines, running from fire escape to fire escape like veins bleeding life into the city. They’re in the wrong place. They’re in the wrong time. Steve ends up in the past with Tony and they both witness Mr. Rogers' infamous temper.
This fic I got to write with @turtle-steverogers and I am so happy with it! I really like exploring comic Joseph Rogers who was abusive but there isn't a lot of fics about that out there, so it was really fun and satisfying to write this idea together.
2. Do over
"T.A.H.I.T.I. was designed to revive a fallen Avenger. That's how it got started." Or, Tony is doing his best to live his life and settle down after the whole AIM thing...and then Steve Rogers shows up at his door, as prickly and uptight as always. Beyond that though... something just seems... off with him, something Tony can't quite put his finger on. And, you know, the fact that he and SHIELD are no longer on speaking terms is kind of a red flag.
This fic took me by a storm. I wrote the whole thing in like, three days. I am still impressed by this fic, the way Steve and Tony are distant but become friends during it and the reveal of what happened to Steve. It's just all very satisfying.
3. All Too Familiar
The man in the Helicarrier is Important, so the Asset stays with him on the bank of the Potomac. Soon agents come to collect the man, and the Asset realises why he must know him. Or, Bucky, fresh from Hydra, watches the interactions between Steve and the Avengers, and comes to the logical conclusion that Steve must also be an asset like himself.
This fic was inspired by a fic by @perplexinglyparadoxialperson. In their fic Bucky thought Steve was also an asset and that was such an intriguing concept! This is another fic I wrote all at once. I just like how Bucky's assumption really drives home how alienated Steve is in this fic.
4. Out of it
Tony and Steve team up to fix the engines after an initial clash on the Helicarrier. It's going well until Tony finds Steve dissociating after his near fall out of the Helicarrier fighting Loki's goons. It isn't what he's expecting, and Tony has to confront the fact that Captain America isn't what he first thought.
I love this fic because it was really fun to write a oneshot that focused directly on one traumatizing thing for Steve. Avengers goes so fast and doesn't have time to focus on all the things that happen to him but I always think of them when I'm watching the movie!
5. The Singer
Everyone knows that the Singer is a Seeker blessed by Primus to sing songs that predict the future and guide the present. It is too bad no one can seem to unravel his meaning. Or so Megatronus has been told. He is starting to suspect some willful ignorance on the behalf of his fellow Councillors.   "What was his name again?" he asks, his optics pinned to the fiery ones in front. The councillor next to him shrugs, hardly paying the song any mind. "Starscream." Or, Megatronus finds himself entangled in the mess of corruption that is Cybertron, and finds an ally in a bitterly fierce Seeker who can only speak in song.
This fic was quite an accomplishment for me! I had this idea brewing for years. It's not uncommon for me to be inspired by music and have story ideas where characters use music to express themselves. I never thought I'd write one of them since it sounded like a hard idea to pull off, but I am so happy with this fic! Very proud of it.
Tagging @fiction-vixen @jinxquickfoot and @turtle-steverogers if you wish to join!

Winter 2021 Anime Worth Watching!
Since 2020 basically sacrificed itself to give us the most stacked anime season of all time, I’m currently buried under the weight of almost 20 shows airing per week. So for anyone who’s looking for some anime to watch this winter, here’s some first impressions! I’m speed running my list this time by only talking about the new shows...because otherwise this would be my great American novel.
If anyone’s interested, I have master lists for both 2020 anime and 2019 anime, because there’s no shortage of fun things to find.
New Shows!
And before anyone asks, So I’m A Spider, So What? isn’t on here, because CG spiders freak me out.
Cells At Work Code Black: This...less comedic spin off of Cells At Work (made by a different studio) takes the wholesome concept of Osmosis Jones meets cute anime girls and turns it on its head. In this much more depressing version, we follow a rookie red blood cell who works in the body of an overly stressed, alcoholic smoker who puts every strain on the body imaginable. I love Red Blood Cell AA2153 and his co-workers, but man am I glad we get the regular Cells At Work airing this season too, because I need something fun and uplifting after seeing my sweet son go through hell every episode.
Tumblr media
*Heaven’s Design Team: Have you ever wondered how God came up with some of the weird ass animals that live on this planet? Like, what’s the deal with giraffes? And why can’t we have dragons and flying horses? Well this is a comedy about the engineers and designers in heaven creating the new animals that are going to inhabit the Earth. That’s it, that’s the show. It’s kind of in the same vein as Cells At Work, having comedy blend with a surprising amount of educational information. If you want something light and funny, this is the show for you (though I don’t think it needs to have full length episodes). I’m just hoping there’s an episode about how the hell the platypus was created. Also it’s the only new one available on Crunchyroll.
Tumblr media
Horimiya: A romantic comedy about a girl named Hori who fits the image of a perfect queen bee and a quiet bespectacled boy named Miyamura who never makes an impression at school. When the two meet by chance outside of the classroom, we see that Hori is practically raising a younger brother by herself, and Miyamura is actually a sweet guy who happens to be covered in tattoos and piercings. This show is an exercise in breaking down the images people have of others in their minds, and it’s a concept that really hits home in a fun and meaningful way. Honestly, this has become one of my immediate favorites. The characters have great chemistry, and I can’t wait to see more of them!
Tumblr media
Monster Incidents (Kemono Jihen): When big shot Tokyo detective Inugami is called to a rural town to investigate a series of strange animal deaths, he finds a mysterious boy with the nickname Dorotabo who has been shunned by the other children in town. As the detective gets closer to Dorotabo, he discovers that there may be more...inhuman secrets to the boy than he realizes...and Dorotabo discovers that Inugami has some secrets of his own. This is a hard show to sell without spoiling the first episode, but it had twists and turns that kept me engaged from start to finish. I’m really interested to see where the plot goes, because I thought this was going to be something totally different just from the PV and series summary. If it plays its cards right, this could be a great paranormal detective show!
Tumblr media
Wonder Egg Priority: A psychological drama about a girl named Ai who starts having dreams about a mysterious egg that promises to give her what she wants most in the world...a true friend. Before long, she begins to see how the dream world and reality are tied together, and trippy antics ensue. It’s hard to say more without spoiling anything, but I had to go back and add this one in because I made the mistake of thinking it was an OVA when it’s actually a full series. And what a series it’s starting out to be. This anime has all the psychological discomfort of a Satoshi Kon product with the beauty and style of something from Kyoani (even though it’s made by Clover Works). It’s really one of those anime you just have to see to understand.
Tumblr media
Sk8-∞ (Skate the infinity): An original skateboarding anime from Bones, featuring a typical sports anime protagonist who takes a new transfer student who has never skateboarded in his life under his wing. Together they compete in dangerous races and take the skating community by storm. The character designs rival Appare Ranman’s in outlandish creativity, and I can smell the main characters’ ship dynamic a mile away (considering they’re exactly the same as the protagonists from Robihachi). If you’re looking for some wild and crazy fun with top notch skateboarding animation, don’t skip this!

2.43: Seiin Koukou Danshi Volley-bu (Seiin High School Boys Volleyball Club): Yes, it’s another volleyball anime. And no, it’s not just a clone of Haikyu. This story follows Yuni Kuroba, a physically built but emotionally weak teenager who finds out his childhood friend Hajime is moving back to their hometown for high school. Yuni discovers Hajime has become an exceptional volleyball player and they join their school’s volleyball club hoping to turn the unknown team into a rising star. If anything, this anime is much more like Stars Align or Free, where the sport is a backdrop for letting the characters explore their personal problems. Or at least it seems that way after the first episode. I went into this show ready to throw it in the trash because how could anything compete against my beloved Haikyu, but I found myself really enjoying the dynamics of the main duo and I’m curious to see what the rest of the team is like.
Tumblr media
And speaking of sports anime rip-offs…..I can’t believe I’m including this but…
Skate Leading Stars: The show where the animators clearly wanted to design another throw away idol anime but saw how popular Yuri On Ice was so they decided to make whatever the hell this show is instead. It revolves around a fictional team sport called skate leading, and we follow the world’s most insufferable main character, a former figure skater named Kensei who wants to return to the ice and join his school’s skate leading team after he finds out his childhood rival is going to compete in the sport. Look, this show is just trashy enough to get a certain type of audience hooked, and it mainly has to do with the best boy of the winter season, Hayato Sasugai, the aspiring team “coach” who pulled most of us into watching this show with his punk appearance, snide comments and smug personality. He’s basically the lovechild of Izaya Orihara and Shizuo Heiwajima in a high school sports anime setting. The show treats itself with the perfect amount of sincerity to get away with being absolutely ridiculous most of the time without making you feel like you’re watching it from a dumpster...like Try Knights. You will know after one episode whether this show is for you. All I can say is, Hayato is worth the watch, and I haven’t seen any 3D animation used for the skating scenes (yet) so that’s a win for me.
Tumblr media
Honorable mention:
Jobless Reincarnation ( Mushoku Tensei): Yet another isekai where the main character is hit by a car (big surprise) and gets reincarnated into a fantasy world...but he happens to remember his previous life and narrates himself growing up as a jaded adult. I’m only including this because it looked amazing animation wise, and I love the opening where getting hit by a car and dying is actually traumatic. And I love the protagonist’s parents (who are retired adventurers who just want to bang all the time). But honestly...the main character is the fucking worst, and I don’t know if I want to keep watching it because of how creepy and weird he is. Like...he’s the hit on your fantasy mom as a baby kind of creepy and weird. But for anyone who wants a cool looking isekai that had an amazing PV, it’s worth checking out.
Tumblr media
Continuing Series!
Because the real gold of the season is in all the established anime getting their next seasons, I’m just going to list some of the things that are also amazing and definitely worth checking out if you haven’t already (because I’ve already talked about most of them at some point and don’t know what else to say).
Attack On Titan season 4
The Promised Neverland season 2
Beastars season 2
Log Horizon season 3
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime season 2
Re: Zero season 2 (second cour)
Dr. Stone season 2
Cells at Work season 2
Osomatsu-san season 3 (second cour)
Higurashi New (second cour)
Jujutsu Kaisen (second cour)
Not to mention all the shows I don’t watch that everyone else loves...like World Trigger (which I have seen quite a bit of, but long shounen shows are too much for me now) Quintessential Quintuplets, and Non Non Biyori.
So there’s just some of all the anime airing this season. Hopefully, someone can find something they like. Here’s to a great year...well, of anime at least...

if stanley and the narrator arent psychic, then what are they in comparison to the psychonauts world? the narrator def feels more than human if he's trying to pretend to be an archetype. what brings them to the motherlobe? I am enamored by your au and would love to hear your thoughts
I'm honoured that you want to know more !! I didn't think many people would, considering it's Extremely Self-Indulgent and I am used to my interests being Niche (reason why the things that I’ve posted have little to no context hgjfkghdfg)
Okay, so, I think it's important to note that, in this AU, the things in The Stanley Parable happened and are real. Stanley was trapped in an eternal loop. Stanley had died a million times over. The Narrator is... still his witty omnipresent self. These things do not change.
I had thoughts about making twisting TSP to be more cohesive to the world of Psychonauts, but ultimately thought against it. I think they are funny silly as they are :] A guy and his voice against the world
Alright, let’s get to explaining this bad boy a little.
So. What happened? Why are they at the Motherlobe?
This is just a rough and vague thought but, after being free of the Parable (when the Escape Pod and/or Freedom Ending is real and is here), Stanley and the Narrator are met with the outside world. Something something, run into the funny Psychonauts. They think something is up with Stanley, that he is strange, but insists that he is Not psychic, they bring him to the Motherlobe. Stanley keeps insisting his non-psychicness, but the Narrator convince him to just “humour them anyway”. Insert funny shenanigans where the Narrator and Stanley work together to do “psychic abilities”. Again, Very rough and Very vague. ghfdkjgdf
But, looping around to that first question: If not psychic, what are Stanley and the Narrator?
Well, they still are your classic Stanley Parable duo. A simple office worker and, like, god or something. But actually, since we’re on this topic...
Let’s talk about how the Narrator works.
Starting off with communication. This one’s easy. Stanley uses ASL to talk people, but, when speaking to the Narrator, it can be through mind thoughts. In the same vein, the Narrator can only be heard by Stanley. He is inside his brain :] This does mean, however, if someone did some mind reading, I guess they’d meet the funny man. the funny loud man. british
Here’s a big one: the Narrator’s power. In the office, the Narrator controlled, well, everything, because they were His creation. The office and everything in it was the extent of his power, and boy is that a lot of power.
But the Narrator is no longer In the office, he’s not even in The Stanley Parable anymore. This is not something he’s created (The Narrator is aware that Psychonauts is fictional and a game btw). However, he still has Some Sort of power in this new world - this is how they are tricking the Psychonauts, after all. So where exactly does that power come from?
Tumblr media
As his OC, the Narrator draws his power from Stanley to exert onto the external world - but that, in turn, takes energy from him. Not a lot, mind you, but I guess it rather depends on size, quantity, and distance from him. This means that what the Narrator is able to do is limited and he has to be considerate about Stanley’s health and wellbeing (Stanley sleeps, and eats and drinks now? Fucking nuts, bro...)
I think the other limitation is that the Narrator can’t... Remove stuff was already previously there - that was already part of the world. He can summon things in, sure, and, while they may not stay around for very long, they are there (You guys sure do love the Narrator as an archetype ghdfjghf), and, he can still interact with the world, like opening doors or flickering lights, but to Truly twist, and manipulate, and alter it...  It’d take a Lot.
Aaaand... That’s it. Probably. I have some other thoughts rattling up in this head of mine but... I think that that’s all the basics :] If you read all of this, thank you?? I love to say things about my funny thoughts, and I know it’s not exactly Fun to read Just text, especially when it’s this long, and I, uh, don’t know how much sense it all makes, but thank you :,] i am very grateful

Tumblr media
How long has it been? 3 or 5 days? Maybe even a week. You didnt know nor did you care. But why would you? You've gave up caring ever since your boyfriend, Sungho was murdered right in front of you, but you couldn't even see who the murderer was which drove you insane.
Tears and blood stained your pretty skin that night, so much agony and rage ran through your veins. All you wanted to do was curl up into a ball and scream until you passed out. But its been days since you've gotten a proper good night's sleep and it was eating you away ever so slowly. Everytime you closed your eyes, you remembered that dreadful day, Sungho's screams, the terror on his beautiful face, his lifeless bloody body. What did he do to deserve death? Why did it have to be him?
"Y/n! Y/n, its been four days please come out of your room!" It was the familiar voice of your mother and her knocking that brought you back to reality. She was almost begging, she hasn't seen you since you locked yourself away that night so you couldnt blame her for being worried, but you were fine. "I'm coming in."
She pushed your door open to see you cuddling your blanket with no emotion on your face. You looked at her with barely any care and rolled over, facing away from her.
She sighed and sat on the edge of the bed, "You know y/n, we'll get to the bottom of this and have them put behind bars. It's gonna be ok-"
"No its not," you rasped from not using your voice in so long, "I dont even know what the murderer looked like, how can we put them behind bars!?" There was a small pause, she knew finding them wasnt likely which hurt you like hell, but she was still trying her best to comfort you.
"...At least come out of your room, everyone's worried." Your mother pleaded and though you really didnt want to move, you didnt want to upset or worry anyone any further so you got up.
With a smile, she did the same and led you downstairs to where you dad and sister were. They tensed when they saw you, but nonetheless smiled sadly, thanking the heavens you were okay.
"You look horrible..." your sister, Haeun, commented making you cringe. It wasnt like she was wrong, you spent four days not taking a shower and sitting in the same clothes so of course you looked bad, who wouldn't.
You excused yourself and went into the kitchen grabbing the first thing you saw, a bottle of vodka. Now it wasnt the best drink you could've had, but you decided to drink away your pain and suffering since you couldnt take the heart ache any longer.
"Shes doing it again." Your mother whispered but you heard her clear as day. "Shouldnt we stop her?"
"What for? She won't listen and she's traumatized. There's nothing much we could do right now." Your dad spoke with sadness watching as you took a quick swig from the substance.
Normally, you're not one to drink vodka but now it felt good, maybe too good. The more you drank it, the less pain you were in. It could last forever, you thought, but nothing lasts forever.
As you poured yourself another drink, you started wondering about Sungho again. If there were an afterlife, was he happy there? Would he be watching over you, making sure you were happy and healthy? If only it were that simple.
Though you and him were starting to drift off a bit, you still cared and loved him and now you're starting to take everything you guys went through for granted. Its what you get.
Standing up, you left the kitchen a bit dizzy from only drinking alcohol and having nothing else in your system and went back upstairs to take a shower. You decided after drinking, you wanted to go to the club you always go to. Normally, you didnt go on a Thursday, but you thought since you haven't been out in a while that it would be good to leave and breathe in the fresh air.
You took a fairly quick shower and your hair and makeup didnt take long either. Finally stopping to look at yourself in the mirror, your saw how pale and tired you were. Almost lifeless. You figured that once you finally have a good time, it would all go away and you'd be happy again.
"Where are you going?" You jumped at the voice of Haeun who appeared out of nowhere.
"To the club." You stated nonchalantly,
Haeun frowned, "Thats not a good idea, all you'll do is drink until you pass out. And there's always weirdos waiting for their turn with someone vulnerable like that."
A smile formed on your face trying to lighten up the mood a bit, "Ill be fine. I promise nothing bad will happen."
Haeun sighed, almost sounding like a bratty child who didn't get their way because she knew she wouldn't change your mind no matter how hard she tried. It sucked to have a stubborn sibling like yourself.
Tumblr media
Sehun rolled his eyes at the sight of Baekhyuns scheduled flirting session. The girl was dressed in barely anything and he could tell she was probably Baekhyuns new toy for the night as he started getting handsy with her. But Sehun could see how Baekhyuns eyes weren't always looking at her. Instead, they sometimes searched passed the girl in hopes to find something else. He knew what, actually who he was searching for so he never asked or mentioned it.
He remembered you perfectly. Your calm and sleeping figure laying peacefully on your boyfriends chest. It was a shame he had to wake you up while he killed the man. And it was a shame to see such a pretty girl cry and scream with such fright in her eyes.
But Sehun didn't feel that bad, he did what he was supposed to do with only a little remorse.
"Sehun," Baekhyun called, the younger lifted his head waiting for him to continue, "Are you sure you didn't hurt my little toy the other day?"
Sehun scoffed, "If I did, I'd be dead by now, hyung."
The man chuckled sadistically , "She hasn't been here in a while," Baekhyun looked up from the girl and turned to Sehun, "Its only safe to ask."
"Hyung, I told you before that shes probably scared." Sehun face palmed when Baekhyun glared at him.
"A little red shouldnt effect someone that bad."
"I kil-" Sehun stopped what he was about to say, forgetting about the girl straddling Baekhyuns lap and cleared his throat, "Shes not used to stuff like that, Baek."
He didn't care about what Sehun said and ignored the youngests pointless blabbering, returning his attention back the girl only for a short amount of time until something caught his attention.
You walked in his club with confidence and beauty not giving any staring man the time of day and took your usual seat at the bar. After ordering your drink, you put your head in your arms and Baekhyun grinned.
Now was his chance, there's no way anyone will get in his way and there was no way he'd let this chance go.
"Stay here." Baekhyun said to Sehun, pushing the girl off him as he stood up. She almost pulled him back but he gave her such a terrifying death glare that made her stop.
"Theres no way youre actually gonna go talk to her...right?" Sehun questioned a bit shocked that Baekhyun was actually going to you after so long.
"Of course I am, I'll be back." With that, Baekhyun walked away from the two with only one thing on his mind: you.
He waltzed with a smirk of pure evil. What would he do? Only God knew, but he couldnt help himself when he saw your pretty face.
All eyes watched Baekhyun stop next to you, astonished that he went to talk to a girl and not the other way around, "Excuse me sweetheart," You popped your head up in the direction Baekhyun spoke, he took a seat next to you with an almost comforting smile when he saw your red cheeks, "But are you okay."
You wanted to spill everything that happened so bad because you needed to get it out, but you didnt know the man and neither did he know you so all you could do was nod, "Im fine."
Baekhyun knew behind your lying eyes was someone in pain and searching for a person to hold, but he couldnt do anything just yet and tried loosening you up to him so he could do what he wanted to do in the first place.
"C'mon sweetheart, you can tell me anything." He smiled that charismatic smile of his, "I'm easy to talk to."
It was believable for the most part and you laughed a bit, the first laugh you actually had since that tragic night, "You seem like a sweet talker," you smirked causing Baekhyun to chuckle, "Whats the catch?"
"There is no catch, I just wanted to know if youre okay. And besides, I could tell you've been crying." He pointed to your tear stained cheeks and you mentally cursed yourself for unintentionally crying just a few moments ago.
"Oh.."
"Dont worry," He chuckled, "Whatever it is im sure you'll get over it." Baekhyun almost failed to hide his sinful smug as you frowned and covered it quickly with a swig of your drink.
But something inside was eating you away about what happened, you needed to let out your emotions and you started caring less and less that he was a stranger. Then again, what if you scared him away? What will happen next?
"At least tell me your name first," You blushed and shyly looked over at him who had an expecting glint in his eyes, "Then maybe ill tell you why I'm so upset."
Baekhyun stretched his hand out in front of him and you gently shook it. Damn he had a strong grip, "My names Byun Baekhyun and you?" He asked as if he didnt know who you were.
"Y/n L/n." You beamed, wondering why his name was so familiar. "So uh- my story..." Fumbling with the drink in your hands, you sighed heavily, "Long story short, my boyfriend was...murdered in front of me." You mumbled the last bit, but you didnt need to repeat yourself as Baekhyun already knew every single detail of that night thanks to Sehun.
Placing a soft hand on your shoulder he whispered with fake sympathy, "I understand now why you're so upset," Liar, "I feel terrible," No he doesn't.
He wiped a stray tear that had slipped down your cheeks and sent you a solemn look.
"I-its in the past i guess." You muttered, "I can't change a thing about it."
Damn right you couldnt. Even if there were some form of time travel, Baekhyun wouldn't dare let you try and change the past because that would mean you weren't entirely his. But since there isn't anything like that, Baekhyun has nothing to worry about except figuring out how to bring you back with him.
"Would you like a glass of water, y/n?" Baekhyun asked quickly as a thought popped into his head. You nodded your head slowly and Baekhyun called over the bartender. You werent really paying attention to him ordering the water and just let your mind slip to the sound of the music and looked around the room, tapping your fingers to the beat, but you stopped when you felt a pair of sharp eyes watching you from somewhere. You looked here and there before stopping on a man that was a about a few inches taller than Baekhyun. He had a eerie grin on his face when you noticed him, then he winked.
Chills went down your spine and you spun yourself around in your chair facing forwards causing Baekhyun to raise an eyebrow but he didnt question it.
"Heres the water." He handed the drink over and you thanked him before taking a sip. It tasted a bit weird but not all water tasted the same, though it was slightly dry for water.
"So tell me about yourself, y/n." Baekhyun checked his watch, all he needed was fifteen minutes then you were all his. "You seem like an interesting person." He looked up and smiled.
"Well," You thought about what was possibly interesting enough to tell him, "Im in my second year of college!" A smile crossed your lips.
"Oh really? Where do you go?" Baekhyun did seem interested to know some parts of your life. Somehow, you caught his attention like that. Thats why Sehun was a surprised when he finally made his move with you.
"Seoul of Performing Arts." You beamed. It was the happiest moment in your life when you got accepted and all of your family members, extended and close, celebrated your acceptance, "My boyfriend, Sungho, went there too."
He just about rolled his eyes but replaced it with a nod and a fake warm smile. If you knew him better, you'd know that smile was only him clenching his jaw in anger.
"How cute." The glint in his eyes proved he was lying and maybe you were too stupid or innocent to notice when you took another sip of water.
He watched and wished his plan could go faster, he was excited to have fun with his pretty little toy and he couldnt wait any longer.
"What about you?" You raised a brow. There was still something in your gut that made you feel like you knew him. And you still wondered why. Was he someone famous in the city? Maybe you've heard your friends mention him here and there? What was it about him that was so familiar?
"You'll know soon enough kitten." You frowned at the pet name as he pat your head like you were a small child yet you chose to ignore it.
It was a bit outlandish and made you more skeptical to know who he was.
"Thats not very reassuring, Baekhyun." Your quirked.
"Why tell you when I can just show you?" He leaned in, mocking your now pouty lips and chuckled, "The drugs should be setting in by now."
You lifted your head up with wide eyes, "Wait what?" Did you hear him right? Did he say what you thought he said? "What do you mean drugs!?" You said with awestruck as your heart raced in fear. You hoped to god he was just joking
The man before you smirked that unpleasant smirk of his, almost like the guy you saw before and you started panicking more, knowing he wasn't kidding. You tried to get up and run but you felt so woozy in a matter of seconds. Not to mention the sudden pain in your stomach that made you want to throw up. What was Baekhyuns plan? Why did he do this!? You thought at least one thing could go right tonight and maybe you could have fun, but you were wrong. So so wrong.
Trying to leave the club building, you knew you wouldn't make it but you still wanted to attempt an escape. It didn't have to be like this. Each step made it harder to move and your eyes started drooping. It was too late for you.
Already collapsed on the ground, people gasped and stared at your almost lifeless body as Baekhyun tilted his head to the side, "She tried, ill give her that." He walked over and crouched down next to you, moving the hair out of your pale face, "But not hard enough."
In an instant, your body was thrown over the man's shoulder. No one commented on anything that happened in fear that they could be next. It was impossible to say that they felt bad either, they were just glad it didn't happen to themselves.
"Sehun," He called out to the younger male but Sehun was already ahead of him, "You drive." He tossed him the keys.
With a nod they both walked out, you on Baekyuns shoulder as he took you to the expensive car. Gently, he placed you down in backseat, putting your seatbelt on for you, and climbed in on the other side to sit next to you.
"All this just for a girl." Sehun shook his head but needless to say he still smirked, "Youre loosing yourself, hyung." The car sparked and drove off into the night, no cops came searching. They knew better. And neither was there news of your kidnapping, the city stayed quiet.
Sure once your parents realized you were gone they'd start freaking out, but would they dare mess with Baekhyun? Would anyone actually try to mess with him? The mafia could easily answer that with an optimistic no. Remember, Baekhyun had power. No one is going to stop him.
"How long will she be out for?" Sehun asked.
Baekhyun shrugged, "Like an hour or two." He was excited for your life with him now, he knew you were finally his after a year of watching you come and go in his club, plus the small stalking he did when he wanted to see you, and he could only smile. No one can get in between him and your love anymore. "Shes gonna love it when she gets home!"
Sehun chuckled at Baekhyuns almost child like enthusiam and started, "She seems a bit innocent," he paused, looking back at your passed out body in the mirror before returning back to the road, "Normally women don't look off into space when someone's buying them a drink."
"Maybe she's a bit slow, but she wouldn't be here with me if that didn't happen."
Tumblr media
The candle flickered in the dark as you awoke on a strange bed. You're head was pounding a bit as you tried looking around at your unfamiliar surroundings. What happened? Was your first thought and you started questioning where you were too. You knew something wasn't right but you couldn't understand why.
You tried getting up only to be locked in place by restraints on your wrists. They were only silk but they were tied tight enough to keep you still. Tilting your head in confusion, you heard foot steps coming towards the door and stopping for a mere few seconds before the door handle twisted.
You anticipated what was going to happen, you didnt even know what was going on in the first place, but you remembered the man standing in front of you.
"B-Baekhyun..?"
"Hey, kitten." That sinister smile was plastered on his face. You were sure it held more meanings then just one.
"Where a-am i?"
He almost cooed at your curiosity but composed himself, "At my mansion, where you'll be staying from now on."
There was a moment where you had to think, interestingly enough what Baekhyun said didnt even frighten you in the slightest, but then again you were high off the drug.
"C-Can you u-untie my hands please?" Your voice was soft and quiet, Baekhyun noticed you werent fully aware of your surroundings and complied, untying the silk from your wrists.
Your eyes were a little dilated when you looked at him. He was gorgeous, you had to give him that, though you wanted to remember why something wasn't sitting right with him. "Baekhyun?"
He looked up with a hum.
"Who...are y-you to me?" You squinted your eyes at the man who sat on the bed next to you, drawing small shapes on your thigh in a sort of loving manner.
"Your boyfriend, y/n."
Boyfriend? You have a boyfriend?
"I have a boyfriend..?" You muttered and asked more to yourself than to him, but he snickered, knowing way more than you did.
"Kitten you drank too much, go back to sleep." He lied and pushed your shoulders down so you were flat against the mattress.
"I-i did?" You whined when Baekhyun kissed your cheek. He always wanted to kiss more than your cheek, he couldnt bring himself to do that unless you were fully conscious for him.
"Yes baby girl, so get some sleep."
You grumbled, "I-Im not t-tired."
Baekhyun sighed, "Then what would the pretty girl like to do?"
You perked up on the mattress and grinned, "Im hungry!"
"Youre hungry?" Baekhyun repeated with a smile at your small childlike energy and you nodded back, "I can ask someone to make you something if you'd like."
"Please!"
He stood up, waiting for you to do the same but since you weren't very awake, you stumbled a bit.
Baekhyun settled with carrying you to the mansions kitchen, awing at your cuteness the whole time. It was a bit of a walk but luckily you were light.
Sitting you down, Baekhyun walked off, finding someone to cook for you. In your state, you felt a bit lonely, only knowing Baekhyun and not your surroundings, it made you feel a bit lost. It shocked you too how you didnt remember Baekhyun being your boyfriend, you started question the relationship between the two of you more.
"Princess i got you your favorite dish!" He walked in with a plate of jjajangmyeon and set it down in front of you.
Your mouth was watering and you were ready to dig in before wondering, "H-How do you know m-my favorite dish?"
Baekhyun hesitated at the question before clearing his throat and spoke with a raised brow, "We're dating y/n, why wouldn't I know what you like?"
"Uh yeah..right...." you dug in, your mind was starting to clear up a bit, not enough for you to fully remember anything though. But the more you thought, the more consciousness you regained.
Baekhyun watched as you gobbled down the meal with full satisfaction. This wouldn't be the first time he's watched you and neither would it be the last. He liked knowing you were eating well and were healthy so he was proud.
"I-im done!"
"Good girl. Now wait for me to come back so we can go to bed, okay?" You nodded and sat patiently as he took your plate and waited for your boyfriend to come back.
A few moments later, Baekhyun still was no where to be seen and your mind was slowly coming back, "N-no...wait." mumbling to yourself, you figured it out in just mere seconds and remembered that your boyfriend was brutally murdered four days ago in front of you. After four days you went to the bar to drink away the anguish and met someone, that someone was Byun Baekhyun. After thirty or so minutes of talking to him, you were drugged when you werent paying attention and passed out minutes later. Now you were here at Baekhyuns mansion, lied to and kidnapped. "Oh fuck."
The chair scraped against the floor and you wasted no time running to your hopeful freedom.
But you weren't a lucky person. Oh no you weren't. You were tossed and pushed against the door you were about to open by someone much bigger. He was the same guy you saw at the bar and his smirk was nothing different. Cynical and frightening.
The man stepped closer to you before putting one hand next to your head and whispered, "Are you playing a cat and mouse game with hyung now? How cute." Standing tall, he grabbed you by the hair and dragged you back to where you came. You groaned and tried fighting back, but there was no use, he wasn't going to let go until after he practically threw you into Baekhyuns arms.
You were about to scream at Baekhyun and the no name man until Baekhyun covered your mouth with his hand, "Say something and you'll regret it." He growled into your ear as you shook and fought.
You hummed against him and tried biting his hand and punching his side, but he was like a man of steel and let it happen, only raising his brow like he wanted to hurt you, but didnt.
"Sehun, tell Chanyeol to lock all the doors for the next week or so 'til she learns how to behave."
The man nodded and ran off leaving you two alone. Fear was one way to describe it and the look Baekhyun gave you didnt help.
"Now kitten why would you go and do some shit like that? Are you asking to be punished?" He took his hand off your mouth to let you speak. Baekhyuns aura was much different than earlier. The nice guy was gone and you were left with a man who could kill you with just one look.
You stopped hitting him and screamed viciously, "Fuck you! You're fucking insane!"
"Now now princess," he pressed a hand to your throat, wrapping it tighter and tighter until you felt the oxygen leave your lungs, "It seems as if you're asking for a punishment."
"I-if you...s-so dare to-touch..any other p-part of my body, i-ill....kill you..." You whimpered, grabbing his wrist in attempts to pull him off but Baekhyun was relentless, keeping his grasp tight and painful.
"Stop struggling, you're only making this harder for yourself."
There were two options now, either listen to Baekhyun or fight until you passed out again.
"Princess." His voice held a warning tone and you hesitantly stopped and moments later he loosened his grip, you knew there would be marks by tomorrow, "We are going to bed now. Don't try to run, I have this place guarded up and if you do somehow make it out, be prepared because I will find you and beat your ass until you can't sit for a month. Understand?"
Your stomach did flips and not in a good way, you were scared, "Y-yes."
"Can you say 'yes master'?" His voice went higher as he said the last part to mimic yours.
You sighed, positive if you didnt comply then you'd be here all night, "Yes m-master..."
"Good girl." He kissed your cheek and you almost smacked him in disgust but tried not to act aggressive towards him. You wanted to leave, not be punished by whatever he had in mind. "Call me that from now on."
Baekhyun grabbed your hand and led you to the room you were just in, now that you took a good look, it was a pretty room. There was a red sofa against the wall and some other matching chairs plus a huge flat screen TV hanging on the wall facing the bed. You had to admit, he had good taste but he was still insane.
As you sat down on the bed, Baekhyun reached into his draw to pull out a t-shirt and handed it to you with a wide smile, but you raised a brow at the fabric.
"No pants?" You asked.
Baekhyun chuckled, "What for?"
"Because of creeps like you." You grumbled and snatched the shirt that dangled in front of your face before storming off into the connected bathroom. Inside, you could hear Baekhyuns annoying laugh and ignored it, changing into the surprisingly very oversized shirt that went down to your mid thigh.
Taking the clothes you wore earlier, you went back into the room where Baekhyun laid peacefully on the bed, waiting for you.
He only had his boxers on which made you groan in anger and decided to not lay on the bed and instead on the couch near it.
"Princess, what are you doing?" He perched himself on his elbows, watching you throw your clothes on the ground then take the folded blanket on the couch and wrap yourself with it as you laid down.
"Going to sleep, master." You stated coldly with a glare.
Baekhyun rolled his eyes, "Get over here." He said, voice low and laced with dominance but you remained still, closing your eyes and pretending as if you were asleep. "Y/n." He warned but there was no reply.
"Thats it." You heard him get up and march to where you laid. Baekhyun picked you up and you yelped at the sudden intrusion and were thrown over his shoulder.
Smacking his back got you nowhere as he threw you down on the bed, pinning both your hands down and hovered over you with a killing look, "Next time you don't listen, ill bend you over my knee."
"Youre all talk, no action." In an instant you were flipped over and a hand landed straight on your bare ass, leaving you shocked and mouth agape.
"Are you sure, kitten? Would you like me to spank you again?"
"N-no."
"No what?"
"N-no master.."
Baekhyun slowly let you go and laid beside you, still a bit irrated. "Now go to sleep."
You couldnt. Not with the lingering fear of what could happen next. Plus, not with his arm wrapped around your waist with a somewhat tight hold. You were just too scared to let your gaurd down. Why shouldn't you be scared though? What if he took advantage of your sleeping body and did something terrible.
There was no way you could get rest now. You could now count this as your fifth day without proper sleep.

a/n: reader is a psychotic murderer. this is purely a work of fiction and if you or someone you know are experiencing homicidal urges, seek professional help immediately.
-
The room was filled with tension and an overwhelming sense of despair but no one said a word. No more hellish arguing, no irritatingly random facts, not even discussion to solve the case. Everyone worked on their angle of the case and despite the fact that no one would dare admit it, they all somewhat hoped that Y/N wouldn't be caught. Some hoped more than others but deep down they all felt a twinge of it. JJ walked into the room and spoke, startling the team and ripping them away from their thoughts and guilt.
"I've given a picture of her to the media, it's being circulated."
It pained her-- almost physically-- to have to hand over a picture of someone who'd been like family for so many goddamn years. She felt that she was betraying Y/N and that made her feel indescribably horrible.
"Now what? We just wait?" Morgan seemed to be the only one that really did want to stop her. Maybe he was angry that he hadn't seen the signs. Maybe he was angry that his best friend had just... left. Maybe he was angry that she lost herself so much. Maybe he blamed himself.
"What else is there to do Derek? Call me bad at my job- Hell, call all of us bad at our jobs but we can't profile her. Admit it, we're all biased. Too biased to think straight but there's no way we can give this case to another unit." Emily had always been so close to Y/N and was able to open up to her. Something she couldn't bring herself to do with most people. But you weren't most people, were you? Even with what Y/N could be doing, Emily doesn't have it in her to hate her. The sadness she was feeling must have shown because JJ squeezed Emily's hand and gave her a weak smile. And for the millionth fucking time, everyone stayed silent. Not even Spencer was saying anything and he is not the type to stay quiet this long. Believe it or not, that was actually one of the things Y/N had loved about him. Everyone rolled their eyes or cut him off but she loved to listen to him ramble. To everyone's surprise, she was always genuinely interested in what he had to say and that was one of the first things that made him fall in love with her. She never invalidated him or called him strange. Sometimes when she had a nightmare or experienced anxiety she'd even ask him talk to her about a random topic so she could focus on his voice until she calmed down.
"Your voice is like... honey. In my ears." Spencer wanted to scream with emotional torture building up as he remembered how she'd laughed when she said that and how he'd had smiled at her with nothing but adoration and love.
"That seems unsanitary Y/N."
"You're such a smartass."
"Am I?"
"Definitely. But it's ok. I love that about you. I love you."
"I love you too."
She'd planted a sweet kiss on his lips before laying her head on his lap and listening to the rest of his topic rant. Still basking in the memory of Y/N, a sharp pain entered his hand and he realized he'd dug his crescent nails into the palm of his hand. And in that moment, he couldn't help but think about how much he'd love to be holding her hand right now.
"Guys!"
They all turned to Garcia, the source of the exclaim, who was walking in with Hotch.
"A bartender downtown says he just saw a woman matching Y/N's description leave with another man."
"She's chosen another victim? Here?" Rossi asked with confusion written on his face. "Up until now she's only killed 2 people per state and knowing the BAU has been called in, why is she staying here?"
JJ stepped in,
"This place is special to her, she has history here. Y/N must have an endgame but what is it?"
"The profile says she'll take as many people as she can with her. Probably suicide by cop."
Derek had accepted the situation. So why did that hurt to say?
"Rossi will go to the bar and talk to witnesses. Reid and Prentiss, stay here with Garcia. JJ and Morgan, PD is surveilling the radius around the bar and setting up roadblocks, come with me to help them."
"There's no way I'm staying here." Spencer objected.
Stay here and do nothing? Like hell.
"Neither am I, what the hell Hotch?"
"Reid, Prentiss that's an order. You're not going."
They both started to argue again but Hotch had already left. JJ and Derek followed and Rossi stood up with to leave for the bar. Apologetic looks were shot at Spencer and Emily because they all know why they have to stay behind. They're the two closest to her, the two that wouldn't be able to keep their emotions from affecting them on the field. And with that, off they all went.
-
Y/N's POV
-
The second you get to his hotel room, your lips crash against the handsome stranger. Your next victim. He pushes you against the wall and you moan loudly. His hands roam your body and you pull back.
"Hey... Go lie on the bed and wait for me."
Panting and staring at you with lust, he complies. Of course he does.
For God's sake. This man doesn't even know your name.
To be fair, Spence didn't even know Maeve's last name. And he still chose her.
You walk over to the eager man on the bed. Your hot breath on his neck, you lean close and whisper to him.
"We're going to do things my way."
He moans and you fight the urge to roll your eyes at him in disgust.
"Yes ma'am."
Taking out a rope, you tie him up and you know he thinks you're just a kinky slut. That's what they all see, isnt it? Suddenly something roars inside of you. Forgetting your usual routine, you pick up the lamp on the bedside table and smash it against him. Crimson stains the bed and you drop it, shocked by yourself. Yes, you've done worse. But it isn't the act that's sending regret and nausea through your body, it's that you're devolving. You're losing control.
Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.
Starting to panic, you take the unconscious man and check for a pulse. He's still alive.
Giving him a shower (much to your disdain) and change of clothes, you put his arm over your shoulder and walk out of the room giggling as you pass one of the housekeepers.
"Baby, you're such a lightweight! Let's get you out of here."
The housekeeper barely gives you a second glace but when she enters the room of the man you've taken, she starts to scream and you know you're running out of time.
Run. Drag him. Just hurry the hell up.
Finally at his car, you take him to the small studio you own downtown. No one can find you here. It's been yours for nearly a decade and you aren't stupid enough to have told anyone about it or put it under your name. Granted, you'd never thought you'd have to use it to hide out from the feds, it's still useful. After taking a look at the brightly colored wall in your basement, you feel a sense of sudden pain race through your veins. You used to be normal. You used to have a life.
-
The man is chained up, gagged, and bleeding but you can't even remember doing anything to him. What you need is numbness. They thought the other bodies were bad? Wait til they fucking see what you do with him. Pain shoots through your skull again and you wince and fall to the ground.
"Fuck. I- I need a drink." you stammer to no one in particular but yourself.
A wig and sunglasses make you look different enough from the woman being circulated to take the bus to a nearby gas station. Walking down the liquor aisle of the store, you hum a song to yourself and let the AC blow on your skin. Vision blurred, you bite your lip and taste the unmistakable strong metallic taste of your own blood. Still humming that fucking song. The song you'd danced to with Spencer in your living room before you'd made love for the first time.
"You cannot be serious!"
"Y/N! I can't dance."
"Oh come on. How bad can you be?  Seriously, the songs going to end and it'll be too late."
"Yes, that's what I'm hoping for."
"Psh. Don't tell me Doctor Reid is scared to sway around a little."
"Shut up."
"Make me." you laughed.
With one playful look, you dared him to shut you up in the most passionate, sensual way he could. But instead he put his warm hands on your hips and swayed to the song. You melted into his touch and your breaths synced as you laid your head on his chest. His heart beat was steady and calming. One hand reached for yours and intertwined before twirling you and pulling you back in to dance. He'd held you until it was over and brought your chin up to his face. The kiss was so intense, so loving. He tilted his head and pulled you tighter to get as close as he could to you. His tongue met yours and your mouths bathed in each other's taste. Running a hand through your hair, you'd started to unbutton his shirt. He'd been taken aback at first but then picked you up and placed you in the bedroom ever so softly. Placing gentle kisses all over each other's bodies and undressing for the other, you made raw, breathtaking love for the first of many times.
"Hey lady! Get out of the way!"
"W-What?..." You tremble and realize you're crying on the floor of the aisle.
"I said get out of the damn way, some of us got places to be."
The man is clearly batshit drunk. Probably here to buy his next fix. Shaking and letting yourself actually feel your emotions, you stand and use the wall to balance yourself.  The man that yelled at you curses to himself as his phone rings and he picks it up.
"Hell do you want? Thought you were still mad about Andrea."
Andrea? Mad about Andrea. Another cheater. Another liar. Right? It has to be.
Before you can process what you're doing-- how irrational it is-- the gunshot rings through the store and everyone turns to see the man before you on the ground, screaming and spitting blood. A mix of a laugh and a sob escapes you and you scream.
"Everyone on the fucking ground! If I see any cellphones, I'll shoot you just like this dickhead. Got it?"
Frightened people drop to the ground and you start to yell, incoherent bullshit again. You smash the freezer glass behind you and open an expensive bottle of bourbon.
You practically whimper having to take deep gasps in between words, but in a somehow still confident, fearless tone.
"Now let's have some fucking fun."
-
But what you didn't know was that the cashier in the front had sent a text 5 minutes earlier.
Call 911! The girl from the news, the Queen of Hearts. She's in the store.
What you didn't know was that the woman that recieved the text had called immediately.
911, what's your emergency?
What you didn't know was that the BAU was on their way.

BlazBlue Alternative Dark War Nightmare Fiction Event English Translation (Part 8: At the Edge)
Tumblr media
IT’S FINALLY OVER! -cue game over music-
PLEASE READ THIS FIRST:  I realize this isn’t getting as much (actually not much of any) traffic as opposed to the reddit posts, but I’d like to extend this request over here as well. I’d definitely like to continue working on translations for this game but am unsure whether I should jump right into the most current event (the Dark Mai one) or start on actual story content next. So my question is: what do you guys want to see more? Reply to this post or shoot me an ask or whatever it is tumblr does these days.
Crossposted from reddit just for a little more exposure.
This is part 8, or the ninth story quest in the event.
Previous parts can be found here: [Part 1-1, Part 1-2, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7]
Some notes:
- The default name of Rei is used for the player character and was selected as male at the beginning of the game.
- I’m still on the fence on if I should be using honorifics or not. Your opinion on the matter would be greatly appreciated.
Click here to be taken to a pastebin with the translated dialogue or look under the read more to read it here.
Section 8 – “At the Edge” (TL: Read as “kazuaru hazama-nite”)
Kazuma This is...
Ciel It’s very similar to the room we found hidden beneath Ishana.
Raabe So... this is the “innermost part.”
Hazama Oh? What’s with you guys all of a sudden? You’ve all got this shocked look on your faces. Have you guys been here before?
>We’ve been somewhere like this before. Hazama Really? Normally I’d ask to hear more about what sort of place that was but... Hazama We’re not exactly in the best place to be taking our time, wouldn’t you agree?
>Never seen it before in my life. Hazama Hey now, don’t just leave me in the dark like that. Hazama You’ll just make me even more curious if you keep it a secret, y’know. Hazama But... now isn’t really the best time to get into that, is it?
Fuzzy Raabe’s right though. This is the innermost part you guys have been so keen on getting to.
Fuzzy You brought those six keys here so you could activate the elements... and finally escape.
Raabe What happens next then?
Fuzzy You’ll just have to find out for yourself, right? You will, won’t you? Really though, even I don’t have any idea what’s supposed to happen next. Ahahaha.
Raabe We don’t have much of a choice either way, it would seem.
Kazuma As soon as we activate the elements, all of the mana we’ve collected will activate with them and accumulate around us.
Kazuma Much more mana than we’re used to will gather together in one place.
Hazama Will that be problematic for us?
Kazuma There’s no reason why it should be. This is probably the perfect place for it actually...
Fuzzy If you’re gonna go ahead and start it up, I’d let Kazuma do it. Since he’s a magician he should be used to working with mana and the elements already.
Ciel Kazuma-san, would you be willing to activate the elements for us?
Kazuma I, uh, yeah, I can do that. That shouldn’t be too difficult.
Kazuma Let’s see here...
Hazama You’ve looked like you’ve had something on your mind for a while now.
Hazama I agree that Kazuma-san’s the best suited out of all of us to carry this out but... don’t push yourself if you don’t think you can handle it.
Hazama If we really have to we can always looks for another way to activate them...
Kazuma ......
Kazuma ...No.
Kazuma I can do it.
Raabe Hey, hold on...
Hazama Are you sure?
Kazuma Yes. Please, allow me.
[a green magic circle appears, surrounded by the six elements]
Hazama Oh my... I can already feel how the air around us has changed. Looks like you managed to pull it off without a hitch after all.
Ciel Is this... activated mana? But this feeling, where have I...
Raabe It can't be. This is...! Hey, Kazuma! Stop whatever it is that you’re doing!
Kazuma ......
Raabe Are you even listening!? Earth to Kazuma!!
Kazuma ...Ah... it’s just like I thought. I was wondering... if that’s what it was...
>What’s wrong, Kazuma-san? >Who are you talking to?
Kazuma Who...
[a dark green shadow with veins and one glowing eye starts to materialize]
Hazama Uuh, guh, ghh....
Ciel Hazama-san? Is something wrong?
Hazama Please be careful... Something’s... coming...!
[the shadow becomes fully visible]
Raabe Wh... What’s going on?
Fuzzy Hmm, I wonder what it could be~? What do you think?
Fuzzy What about you, Rei? What do your “eyes” see? You can see it, can’t you?
Raabe Don’t look. ...I guess that’s impossible, huh. Try not to focus as much as you can. This... isn’t a collection of mana.
Ciel Raabe-san, Rei-san! We’ve got a problem.
Ciel I’ve confirmed the appearance of the cauldron.
Ciel But... there’s nothing around here that looks like it could be the cauldron. And if there’s a cauldron here, then who is the Observer...?
Raabe They’re both right in front of us.
Ciel Eh? Wh-What do you mean?
Raabe The cauldron came into existence across this entire world the moment this guy appeared. In other words, that shadow... it’s the Observer.
Raabe It’s also the cauldron. There’s no other explanation for this sort of reaction. This much condensed seithr... this is the cauldron.
Hazama What’s that now? Seithr?
Hazama You mean what Kazuma-san’s magic is activating right now isn’t...
Raabe It’s not the elements or mana, no. It’s seithr!
??? Ahh~ god, you losers took fore~ver to show up.
Ciel !?
??? Shit though, you guys sure have been through a lot, huh? But thanks to you I can talk as much as I want again.
>The shadow spoke! ??? Kyahahahaha, just a shadow, eh... Well, I guess that’ll have to do for now.
>Who are you? ??? What, you wanna know my name? You really wanna know who I am? Sure, I’ll humor you...
Kazuma ...Yuuki Terumi...
Spirit Terumi Oops, looks like you beat me to it. But yeah, the kid’s right. Don’t go forgetting it, numbskulls.
Spirit Terumi Yuuki Terumi. That’s the name, folks.
Hazama You were lurking inside of me.
Hazama Earlier when we were fighting Saya-san, she said she had sensed something within me... I wasn’t entirely sure what she meant at the time.
Hazama I had no idea that it would turn out to be something like this.
Spirit Terumi Hyahahahaha! Damn, I didn’t realize you were so out of the loop, Hazama-chan.
Ciel So you’re familiar with Hazama-san as well.
Spirit Terumi Oh yeah, best of buddies, thickest of thieves, call it what you like but we’re rea~l intimate. In fact, I know all you guys.
Spirit Terumi You’re the morons who’ve been running all over the city doing my dirty work for me. Hyahahahahahaha!
Kazuma So you were... using us? Does that mean that Fuzzy-san was also...?
Fuzzy Can’t say I know about any of this. I’m only here to fulfill my role. Really I’m just a pawn here.
Fuzzy You guys are all just pawns too. But even the pawns are necessary in the end, right? It’s not really a game if all the pieces aren’t in order, after all.
Spirit Terumi The trap over here gets it. And now since you’ve been such good little slaves so far, how’s about you do me one last teensy-weensy favor...
Spirit Terumi And die for me, will you? Hyahahahahaha!
Raabe I see now. We’ve been playing right into his hands this entire time.
Raabe When Kazuma started the activation sequence, he wasn’t channeling the mana or the elements. He wound up summoning this guy instead.
Ciel No way... Then does that mean the whole story about escaping from the city was a lie?
Spirit Terumi Come on, even if I’m not that cruel. I’ll still let you guys out.
Spirit Terumi All aboard the Terumi express! Now serving a one-way trip straight into the Boundary! Just make sure to keep your arms and legs inside the vehicle, or you might lose them!
Hazama Are you always this egotistical?
Hazama Things may have gone your way up until now, but we’re not going to just stand here and let you do whatever you want.
Hazama ...It was wrong of me to bring you all this way when I sensed something was amiss, no matter how small it may have been.
Hazama Looks like I got you all mixed up in something undesirable after all... I’m really sorry, Rei-san.
Hazama But I don’t think I’ll be able to handle this one by myself. I’m afraid I must ask for your assistance one last time.
>Let’s all get out of here together. Hazama Thank you. I’m... truly glad to have met you.
>Let’s kick his ass and get the hell out of here! Spirit Terumi Ooh, someone’s a little touchy. That sort of enthusiasm is contagious, y’know.
Ciel Assuming combat position. All eyes on target. Ready when you are!
Raabe His form is still unstable. It’s hard to say if his existence has fully taken root yet or not.
Raabe The reaction he’s giving off is definitely strong but... he might not be able to use the full extent of his power the way he is now.
Raabe We need to strike before all of the seithr has finished gathering in one place. Let’s get this over with quickly.
Fuzzy Go, go! You can do it!
Hazama Are you ready for this, Kazuma-san?
Kazuma Ah, uh... Right.
Spirit Terumi Oh? You wouldn’t really team up against little ol’ me, would you? Heheheheh.
Hazama Well then. Let’s go, Terumi-san.
Spirit Terumi Guh, shit...! My power... no, none of this shit. None of it’s good enough!
Kazuma ......
Fuzzy Whoa. You guys really creamed him.
Hazama ...I think that shadow inside of me... Terumi-san detached himself completely from me during the course of that fight.
Hazama It’s the strangest feeling. It’s unsettling but also like a... weight’s been lifted, in a sense.
Spirit Terumi Ha, haha... Hyahahaha...! Damn, that really could’ve gone better.
Spirit Terumi I guess you win this one. I really lost to some lame spin-off side characters. Ain’t that right?
Kazuma Yes. I... think that’s what happened.
Spirit Terumi Heh, hahahaah! Yeah, them’s the breaks, huh. Tch, what a pain in the ass.
Spirit Terumi Man, this sucks... you’re really blue-balling me here. Taking on a bunch of pussies like you should’ve been a joke.
Spirit Terumi Sure screwed myself on that one.
Kazuma ...Please send us back.
Kazuma As long as you do that... I don’t think we’ll have to hurt you anymore.
Spirit Terumi Ha! Hurt me? You really think you can hurt me? Hyahaha, you don’t have a lot going on underneath that pretty face, do you, kid?
Spirit Terumi Don’t make me laugh.
Ciel Are you going to continue resisting?
Spirit Terumi Oooh, close but no cigar! This isn’t what you’d call resistance...
Spirit Terumi This is an escape!
[static]
Kazuma ...Ah. H-Huh?
Ciel This is...
>It’s Ishana! Kazuma Yes, this is Ishana. It’s the same place we were before we found ourselves in that strange city...
>Are we back? Ciel ...It would appear so. This is where we were standing before we were taken to that strange city.
Ciel But what does this mean? It’s safe to say that we took out the Observer but we weren’t able to destroy the Cauldron...
Ciel Regardless... we managed to escape the Phantom Field.
Raabe I still need to look into everything further so this is just a hypothesis for now, but...
Raabe I don’t think that city was an undiscovered Phantom Field.
Raabe It’s foundation was built on Ishana who had already lost its Observer.
Raabe Using the power of Observation, that shadow calling itself Terumi must have found its way in and overwrote things when it took over.
Kazuma So it was... re-Observed?
Raabe That’s exactly what it was.
Raabe In other words, we weren’t so much moved somewhere else as it was our surroundings themselves were changing before our eyes... That’s probably what happened.
Hazama Well, it was certainly an experience I could have lived without and I’m still not overly sure how any of it was possible but...
Hazama Everything worked out in the end, right?
Hazama We all made it out safe and sound. Let’s be thankful for that, shall we?
Hazama Ahh~, truly all’s well that ends well.
Ciel Hazama-san. And Fuzzy-san, too. The two of you came back to Ishana as well I see.
Fuzzy Bzzt, wrong answer. Really, did you hear a thing Raabe just said? None of us actually came back anywhere.
Fuzzy We were all just sort of displaced.
Ciel Ah, so we were. So then would Fuzzy-san and Hazama-san be considered foreign entities in this situation?
Raabe There’s no way to know for sure what the Phantom Field has classified them as but... that’s probably the case.
Raabe Neither of them are involved with Ishana.
Hazama Hmm~, while this place does look incredibly delightful, I’m afraid this isn’t where I belong.
Fuzzy Me either. I’m not getting any good vibes from the ambience around here. I don’t think I’d fit in very well.
Raabe ...Once a Phantom Field has been liberated of its Observer, any foreign materials left behind should gradually start to return to where they were originally from.
Raabe Here soon your existential information should be sent back to your own worlds.
Fuzzy I guess we’re stuck hanging around here until that happens, huh~.
Fuzzy Well, not like it matters. I’ve never been here before so there’s no harm in exploring a bit. Don’t you think?
[Fuzzy leaves]
Hazama And there he goes. I suppose it’s best to just let him have his fun while he can.
Hazama But more importantly... Rei-san, Ciel-san, Kazuma-san, Raabe-san.
Hazama Thank you all so much for your help.
Hazama When I was still wandering around all by myself, I was at a loss as to what I was supposed to do...
Hazama But as soon as I joined up with you guys, everything just sort of naturally clicked into place.
Hazama A lot happened back there, but I want you to know that from the bottom of my heart I’m grateful we were able to escape from that bizarre city.
Raabe ...Is that all you have to say? I can’t say I’m very convinced.
Raabe It still feels like you’ve been manipulating us this entire time.
Hazama Don’t be ridiculous! It must’ve been fate that I ran into you when I did. I don’t know what I would’ve done without you.
Hazama I’d even go so far as to say that you saved me.
Hazama I’m honestly in your debt. If you ever need an extra hand for something, I’ll be sure to do everything in my power to help you out.
Hazama Then again... I can’t guarantee that the me you’ll encounter then will be the same as I am now.
Hazama Let’s do this the right way this time. My name is Hazama. It’s a pleasure to meet you.
Hazama Rei-san.
>Pleased to meet you.
Hazama Yes. I wish you all the best.
Ciel ......
Raabe ...We still need to head back and check the data to see if this was indeed the abnormality the System was detecting.
Raabe We’ve overstayed our welcome. Let’s return to base.
Kazuma ...I guess this is goodbye then.
Kazuma Hadn’t you said earlier that you couldn’t stay for long?
Ciel That’s correct. We’re still only outsiders in this world.
Kazuma ......
Kazuma ...I’m really glad I was able to see you again. Getting to spend more time together... it was really fun.
Kazuma I feel like I know myself a little better now.
Kazuma Thank you so much.
Ciel There’s no need to thank us. We were merely here for our mission.
Kazuma You’re as blunt as always, Ciel-san...
Kazuma ...I think I have my own perplexing “mission” in front of me... nevermind. Hang in there for me, will you?
Kazuma I’m rooting for you.
>Thank you. >Good luck, Kazuma-san.
[static]
Kagami Rei! Ciel! Thank god you guys made it back in one piece~!
Ciel Oh. You startled me. What’s the matter, Kagami-san? You seem out of sorts.
Kagami Well, what did you expect!? Almost as soon as you two got in you just fell off the grid!
Kagami I wasn’t able to pinpoint where either of were for a long time...
Kagami Your signals only reappeared inside Ishana’s Phantom Field a little while ago, y’know!
Kagami So what happened? Nevermind, it’ll be faster to get the answers from Raabe’s internal data.
Kagami Either way, I’ll get an investigation started. First you guys need to go get a medical check.
Kagami And watch yourselves this time, got it!?
Ciel Y-Yes, ma’am.
Kagami I  can’t let you out of my sight for even a second. Geez...
[Kagami leaves]
Ciel It would seem we’ve caused quite the stir in our absence.
Ciel Let’s head to the medical room. I’ll go with you, Rei-san.
Hazama So this is supposed to be the famous Ishana, huh? Now that I’ve finally gotten a good look at it, it truly is nothing more than a ghost town.
Hazama ...Well then. I wonder where I should be heading next? With the help of those suckers, I was able to remove the chain that was inside me.
Hazama I should be able to go just about anywhere now.
Hazama At any rate, Terumi-san is right back where he should be. Although I can’t say I’m overly thrilled that he left me to do all the grunt work by myself.
Hazama ...I would have been in quite the bind if it weren’t for that boy, though. Heheh.
Hazama But still, what a successful endeavor that turned out to be!
Hazama For me, for Terumi-san... Even for him.
Hazama “End Gazer”... The One Who Sees the End. I can’t wait to see how this will play out.
Kazuma ......
Kazuma Ishana... All these years here, and I still haven’t learned a thing.
Kazuma But... I feel like I finally know why I’m here... Just a little...
Kazuma I feel like I’m home.

The Gravity of Tempered Grace (part six)
[part one] - [part two] - [part three] - [part four] - [part five]
[Part 6: When We Live Such Fragile Lives]
The Life and Times of Jane the Queen, Chapter 7 - The Maid of Honor
“In 1532, Jane was promoted to maid-of-honor in the court of Queen Catherine, where she had served as early as 1527. The two were quite close - both were devoted Catholics, even as Catholicism in was falling out of favor in England, which brought them together, even as Jane served Catherine.
Jane’s sister Elizabeth also served Anne Boleyn, remaining loyal to her until Anne’s execution. Due to Jane’s own loyalty to Catherine and her daughter Mary, Jane did not bring Elizabeth into her own household when she became queen.”
Cathy and Catherine exchange no words as they race up the stairs and split off different directions down the hall.
Catherine barges into Anne’s bedroom, where the woman was starfished out on the bed, and shakes her awake. “Don’t make a sound,” she whispers as soon as she sees Anne’s eyes open. “Henry is here.”
Anne, still half asleep, looks alarmed. “Here?” She whispers back.
Catherine nods. “He’s here for Jane. I don’t think he would expect all of us to attack.”
Anne clambers out of bed, but keeps her footsteps silent as she follows Catherine into the hall, where Cathy and a somewhat-awake Anna are standing.
Catherine jerks her head in the direction of Kat’s bedroom, and Anne takes the initiative to wake her cousin.
“Kitty,” she whispers, “Kitty wake up. Janey’s in trouble.”
Kat’s eyes shoot open, but no sound leaves her mouth, even though Anne’s shadowed face lingering inches from her own was definitely enough to justify a squeak.
She and Anne return to the hall, and the house is still silent, everyone waiting for the explosion from downstairs.
But they all hear nothing.
No words spoken, no sounds of distress, just nothingness.
On silent feet, they begin to slowly descend the stairs, but the space Jane had occupied at the front door is now empty.
The door is closed, the lights are all off, and it’s almost as if Jane was never there in the first place.
Just as Cathy turns to the others, a small lamp by the couch flickers on.
The sight waiting for them makes Kat almost gag.
Henry is lounging on the sofa, one arm propped on the back cushion, with Jane curled up against him, her head resting on his chest. They almost look like a picture-perfect couple from those romantic comedies the queens sometimes watched when there was nothing else on late at night. They look like they’re just head-over-heels for each other, except when Henry turns to the ones intruding his precious moment, there is nothing but malice in his eyes.
“Do you mind?” He asks, and if he finds the appalled looks of his ex-wives amusing, he doesn’t let it show. “I am having a moment here with my love.”
“We know about the heart,” Catherine says boldly, stepping in front of the others. “We know you’re just controlling her.”
“Controlling her?” Henry repeats incredulously. He laughs. “Dear, you’ve been reading too much of this world’s fiction.”
“Enough of the games, Henry,” Anne warns, trying to seem imposing in her diminutive frame. “Let Jane go.”
Henry turns to the peaceful woman next to him. “Do you want me to leave?”
In her blissful haze, Jane shakes her head.
“Now, could you all please leave? It’s been five hundred years since I’ve seen my wife, I’d like to catch up with her.”
At the way he spat the word ‘wife’, how he possessively holds Jane, and Jane’s nearly drunken demeanor, all hell breaks loose.
It isn’t clear who lunges where and who grabs who, but at some point Jane is wrestled away from Henry and the former king is on the floor.
“Where is it, Henry?” Cathy demands. “Where is Jane’s heart?”
He gets to his feet slowly, almost as if for dramatic effect. The light from the lamp catches his face in shadows, and the womanizing king they all remembered is truly standing before them once again.
“Now ladies,” he hisses, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Drop the act,” Kat spits, “where is it?!”
“Watch your tongue, woman. You forget who you’re speaking to.”
“You are no more a king than we are here,” Catherine says, stepping in front of Kat protectively. “You are just as mortal as us. So tell us - where is her heart?”
She’s nose-to-nose with him now, and the tension in the room is so thick you can almost taste it.
“Do you really want to test me?” He warns softly. “I may not be king anymore, but I have other ways of putting you in your place.”
Catherine almost smirks. “Is that a threat?”
“Perhaps.”
“You’re outnumbered here, Henry,” Anne says. “It’s five to one. You can’t win against all of us.”
He narrows his eyes at her, and, oddly, he chuckles. “My, my, I always knew you were short-tempered, but now you’re just… short.”
Anna has to hold Anne back at that, and the former king just laughs again. “Wow, I never thought I’d miss any of you, other than Jane, of course.” He glances to the blonde woman, sitting on the floor with Cathy, incredibly vacant. “But I’ve certainly missed your fire, and tenacity, and,” he leans slightly, catching Kat in his gaze, “other talents.”
God above, Catherine wants to strangle him.
“Why are you even here, anyway?” She demands. “You have Jane’s heart, can’t you bring her to wherever you were?”
“Well what’s the fun in that?” Henry asks. “Then I wouldn’t get to see the look on all your faces when you see me take what’s mine.”
“She doesn’t belong to you,” Anna snarls. “This isn’t our time, anymore. Women aren’t their husband’s property. She doesn’t owe you a damn thing.”
“You may be right about that, Anna,” Henry says. “I don’t own her. But you’re all also right about something else. I do have her heart.”
There’s a cloth bag sitting by the couch, nondescript and nearly invisible, which Henry picks up carefully.
He reaches in, and pulls out a heart.
Jane’s heart.
It isn’t nearly what anyone had expected - it doesn’t have veins running all over it, or a faint sheen of blood - it’s just red. Bright red. Almost glowing red.
“You caught me,” he says, but he’s smirking.
“Give that back,” Catherine demands.
“How many times do I have to say no before you’ll stop?”
“As many as it takes,” Anne says.
“You all are quite committed to this,” Henry comments softly, as if surprised.
“Jane’s our family, and we won’t let you torture her anymore!” Kat says, defiant and strong as she stands next to Anne.
Henry regards them all, scanning each face thoroughly, then looking to Jane and Cathy on the floor.
“Jane,” he says shortly, “come here.”
Without hesitation, Jane gets to her feet and moves to his side.
A cold, harsh shiver runs down Catherine’s spine at the sight of her friend, her once trusted confidant, so helpless against the evil man before them.
“These ladies want me to leave you, do you want that?”
Barely, Jane shakes her head.
“Come on, Jane,” Anna pleads. “Snap out of it. Henry’s controlling you. He doesn’t want what’s best for you. He wants to force you into a relationship.”
“Jane, you deserve better than that,” Catherine continues. “You deserve to have your own adventures and be your own person.”
“He says he loves me,” Jane whispers.
Anne pipes in next. “He says that Jane, but all he’s done is manipulate and control you. That isn’t love, no matter how you look at it!”
“Jane,” Kat adds softly, clearly quite uncomfortable with the circumstances, “he doesn’t really love you. If he loved you, he wouldn’t be forcing you into situations without your say.”
“And he wouldn’t feed you lies,” Cathay finally contributes. “We love you, Jane. We want you to be able to feel again, and do whatever weird things you like to do.”
There’s a tense moment, one where the world stands completely still, and smile begins to creep on Henry’s face.
But then Jane inhales sharply, and her eyes are more alert than anyone has seen in this life.
“Jane?” Anne asks.
“What is happening?” Jane demands, looking wildly between her fellow queens and Henry. Her gaze finds the heart in his hand, and she lunges for it.
He pulls it out of reach, though. “Back up, Jane.”
Unable to resist, even as her face contorts with frustration, Jane complies, taking several stilted steps back until she’s among the others.
“I see being in the same room with your heart has woken you up,” Henry muses. He clicks his tongue. “How unfortunate. Just means that now I’ll have to kill you.”

Dashing
Dearest mother,
is this truly where you envisioned my life to carry me?  Did you foresee that your dutiful daughter, Elsa, would be crated onto a ship bound for worlds unknown when you married her to Lord Hans Westergaard of the Dutch West India Trading Company? Did you not wish to keep your only daughter close, say on the same continent? I apologize, I should not start a letter so drearily. Conceal, don’t feel. It has been weeks at sea and I am fatigued. Before I forget, I must thank you for the wonderful parting gift. A book of dashing swashbucklers to distract from the otherwise ceaseless monotony of blue only occasionally broken by a thin veil between Heaven and Poseidon. We have entered a bit of unfortunate weather and the ship rolls like a devil. The thunder grows ever louder, and sometimes it sounds as if it’s right on top—
The wooden crate that was the captain’s quarters flipped on its side. Tables, chairs, and a lady found themselves tumbling across the lacquered walls of the gilded box before falling back to the polished floor now stained with spilled ink and a smattering of blood.
Elsa held her head as she shook off the ringing in her ears. The doors to the cabin burst open where a panicked, and soaked, Hans Westergaard stood with arms outstretched between the paneled glass and his heart beating to the drone of endless rain.
“Hans..? What was—”
“Pirates!! Hurry, hide yourself! They are already boarding!”
Pirates? Attacking in the middle of a storm?
Elsa’s thoughts were cut short by the screams of men slicing through the roar of thunder and canons. Hans had locked the door behind him, leaving the fear to bubble within her corset. She frantically ran to the closet, but her hands had begun to shake as she fumbled with the latch.
Another loud *THOOM* rocked the cabin, but this time it was against the locked door.
Elsa finally got the latch open and threw herself inside amongst the forest of silk and linen. From within her sanctuary, all she could do was listen and pray.
 *THOOM*
Glass and wood crashed.
Heels of heavy boots knocked.
*knock*
*knock*
The shrill of Elsa’s breath.
She held her quivering lips and tried to force the air back into her lungs.
The *knock* of boots grew. It trickled, slowly, until the canals of her ears were flooded. So close that she felt as if she would overflow with the anxiety and trapped air.
Then silence.
God, please protect me. Or send someone to protect me. Please, send anyone! Send Mr. Crusoe if you have to!
She was hit with a blinding light…
and a hand around her throat.
NO!! Get your filthy hands off me!
She screamed in her mind for her voice was clutched in the coarse grip around her neck. She fought with all her pampered might, her arms striking in all directions until they too were held in place by a second firm shackle.
Finally, Elsa managed to force her voice through the death grip.
“Get…. your brutish hands… OFF ME!!”
Blackness began to overtake her vision. The brute had her lifted against the back of the closet, her feet dangled in the air and the force around her neck tightened.
Her ears were once again flooded, but with the sound of her own heartbeat as the blood in her veins struggled to course. Until a most unexpected sound washed everything else into non-existence.
“Elsa…?”
….
That voice… a woman’s voice? I am being manhandled by a woman? And how does she know my name?
Elsa forced the darkness in her eyes to recede. The grip loosened and she fell to the closet floor. All she could see through the blur of burst veins was a wide, feathered hat, impossibly maroon hair, braided and beaded and rather filthy, and two verdant gems staring with a wide-eyed familiarity.
I know those eyes…
…..
“Anna…?”
Her attacker backed away, seemingly unsure of what she was looking at.
They stood within that broken, gilded box of a captain’s cabin. Alone with the sounds of swords and gunfire lost amongst the storm of surprise and uncertainty surrounding them.
Elsa could not bear it any longer.
“What happened to your hair?”
And years of separation vanished.
“My HAIR?! It’s been ten years and the first thing you do is judge my hair?!? Not, ‘oh hey, Anna, you look good for a dead girl’ or ‘oh my darling little sister, it’s been so long. I’ve missed you terribly?’. Either of those things would have been more normal!”
Elsa picked herself up and gently caressed the rapidly forming bruise around her neck.
“Nothing about this is normal! You tried to strangle me!”
“Oh relax. I was just trying to stop you from screaming and then knock you out.”
“Ah, I see. I am most relieved to hear that your plan was to simply render me unconscious.”
Anna’s head jerked back in a motion of mild disgust.
“Why are you talking like that? You didn’t use to sound so hoity-toity.”
Elsa looked rather indignant at the accusation as she mumbled “It’s not ‘hoity-toity’. Its grace and sophistication”.
“Well, you’re not in a graceful or sophisticated situation so come on.”
Anna grabbed her slender arm and she had almost forgotten that the hulking brute who was upon her moments before was the same lithe girl pulling her out into the rain as easily as a toddler dragging her teddy. The rain had washed the image of her sister away and all that was left was a pirate.
And her fear.
The ship rocked, lulled by the sudden absence of violence. Elsa found herself before a horde of men. Each one a more frightening image than the last and each one fit into her imaginary brute far better than the frame of her sister.
So much for Mr. Crusoe…
An immensely rotund man stepped forward with a sneer in his mouth and a hunger in his eye. Elsa had no idea someone got so large living on a ship. “Oi Cap’n! You found a bit o’ treasure there!”
His grubby hand reached for Elsa’s bosom in the most indelicate manner before a blade came between his dirty fingernail and the lace of her corset.
“You know the rules, Bob,” Anna said with a voice commanding Poseidon’s wrath. “You touch her and you lose a finger.”
Bob had the look of a scolded schoolboy as Anna dragged Elsa to the edge of the ship. “Aw cap’n… you always get the blonde ones!”
Anna spun around in a fury, leaving Elsa to stand perilously on the thin plank that formed a makeshift bridge. She panicked as she fought for her balance in her heels and voluminous dress that was gaining pounds of water every second.
“You shut your hole or I will shove Pete’s peg leg so far down your throat that you’ll be a three-legged barstool on Tortuga with a sign that says ‘reserved for Whale-Butt Willie’. Do I make myself CLEAR?”
*Silence* as the men all looked at each other in submission.
“Aye, cap’n…”
Elsa swung her arms in vain to save herself from falling when Anna decided to skip the plank altogether, lifted her like a commoner’s bride, and leaped across the gap between ships. She was carried to a new gilded box, although this one noticeably less gilded but with significantly richer contents.
“Let go of me, Anna! I am not a child, I am your older sis—”
Elsa landed on her butt as Anna crossed her arms.
“No, you’re not. Because your little sister died ten years ago. Now be quiet while I think of what to do with you.”
Elsa did her best to wring the rain out of her skirt, channeling the fear and anger building from her situation.
“What to do with me? You mean like the other ‘blondes’? Tell me, Anna, what exactly do you plan to do with me?”
“Elsa, don’t.”
“Not only do you slay men, but you bed women as well? Do you mean to have your way with me?” The anger was rapidly overtaking her fear as she glared at her little sister who still stood with her arms crossed, looking away.
“What? Gross, you’re my sister!”
“I don’t claim to know the depravities you pirates get up to. And you just said that I am not your sister. How am I to interpret that other than to treat you as you appear. A pirate who’s kidnapped me.”
Elsa’s gaze turned hard as thoughts filled her head of all the women Anna had grabbed by the neck and forced her will upon.
“…How could you, Anna?”
Anna’s shoulders visibly stiffened.
“I said, don’t.”
But Elsa did anyway.
“How could you do that to those women? You have your way with them and then what? Sell them into slavery? Is that my fate? You call yourself a woman while forcing—”
*SLAP*
Elsa stood, speechless, as a red brand formed across her cheek. The pain was nothing compared to the shock that came from her sister’s palm now embedded into her skin.
“Don’t you DARE judge me! You have been out here for all of five minutes. I have been on these waters since I was twelve FUCKING YEARS OLD! You don’t think I have had to put up with some shit?! You stand there in that ivory tower and judge my life when you don’t know the first thing about it!”
Anna’s chest was heaving in rage while she stood pointing an accusatory finger. Elsa remained motionless and silent, still trying to process the sensation across her cheek and the words being said.
Anna’s breathing started to calm. She crossed her arms again and turned so that she didn’t have to look at the bright red memento left behind by her hand.
“I…I don’t force them. I never force them. Don’t assume you know what life has been like for me. I could never do those things. I would never. My ship has rules, and those rules include being god-damned respectful so you better be god-damned respectful of me.”
Elsa’s fingers spread across her cheek, matching tip-for-tip against the first contact she has had with her sister since they were children. Her voice was low, almost a whisper.
“You’re right. I don’t know what your life has been like. I don’t know what drove you to run away, but I have a pretty good idea seeing as how I lived it in your stead. Perhaps… I sound so much like mother because…
… I was left behind.”
Anna felt the words land across her cheek as assuredly as Elsa felt her palm. She refused to turn and look at her sister. The shame of the truth was staring at her from across her own cabin and she would not bear it. She quietly stormed toward the door.
“Anna…? Where are you going?”
Still refusing to turn, Anna simply said “someone needs to pilot the ship” and walked into the rain.
I sat alone, looking out my window for years wondering if she would ever return to me, and now that she has she slaps me and holds me captive so that she can decide my fate?
Storm be damned, Elsa launched herself through the doors and turned toward the banister that led to the helm above. Her adrenaline-fueled legs carried her halfway up the stairs before she saw Anna at the wheel, staring at her in absolute shock.
Their eyes met and time seemed to slow to a fraction. Elsa felt the sound of Anna’s name on her breath as she began to release it into the howling wind. She didn’t feel the rain, or hear the shouting, or see the pully flying through the air as it slammed into her skull. All she knew was that she was about to yell out her sister’s name after she failed to do so ten years ago from her window as she watched Anna leave her behind.
 \\///////////////////////////////
I’ve had the most wondrous dream. My ship was besieged by pirates! But I was not afraid for I was confronted by a most dashing figure. He was rough around the edges but with the kindest green eyes, like a crystal spring dusted with scattered sundrops through the canopy. He held me with such strength as he kissed me most tenderly. I can still taste the spicy sweetness on his lips; rum and coconut.
There he is now! The hat is missing but there is no mistaking those piercing eyes. And that hair, such an unthinkable maroon color. Yes, my dashing pirate.
\\///////////////////////////////
“Hey, you’re alive!”
As her vision cleared, Elsa lay with her back in the sand and stared wide-eyed and mouth ajar at the woman leaning above her.
“I… where…? ……..Anna?”
Anna leaned in close to inspect for signs of a concussion or any other injury. So close that Elsa caught a familiar scent from her sister’s lips.
Rum and coconut…
“Well, you look alive at least so that’s something.”
Elsa slowly sat up, fighting back a sudden pain in her temple. She reached for the side of her head and found a swath of fabric wrapped around.
“What happened?”
“You got knocked overboard. It was pretty awesome actually. You flew clear over the railing.”
“How did I get here?”
Anna placed her index finger under her bottom lip while she began to sort through her memories.
“Let’s see, first, mother married you to a slaver. Then I think I cut his head off but it’s hard to remember which dead dutchman was him. Then—”
“Anna! I meant how did I end up on this beach?”
“Oh! Be more specific, jeez. The storm carried us for a while and we washed up here.”
“You… jumped in after me?”
Anna’s face turned solemn but determined. She stood, clearly uncomfortable with the words she was about to say.
“Of course. I wasn’t going to leave you behind again.”
And despite the fact that she managed to get the words out, she still walked away in that same manner trying to keep the unsettling shame at arm’s length.
As Elsa watched her sister stroll up the beach toward the tree line, the reality of her predicament suddenly dawned on her.
“Wait, Anna! Are you telling me that we are stranded on a deserted island?!”
While keeping her stride, Anna replied with a simple “yup”.
Elsa scrambled off the sand after her, with a newfound panic quickly settling in.
“What are we going to do? How are we going to survive?! We are going to starve to death. No, we will die of thirst first. Or perhaps cannibals will eat us—”
“Oh for Christ’s sake, chill out! There’s no such thing as cannibals on these islands. Seriously, you read too many books. Relax, this isn’t the first deserted island I’ve been stuck on.”
As they made their way off the beach Elsa saw swaths of blue cloth tied around branches and an array of wide leaves that formed a surprisingly well constructed little bungalow complete with a floor, walls of fabric to keep the bugs out, and a watertight roof.
“You’ve already made a house. How long was I unconscious?”
“Only since last night,” Anna said with a casual shrug.
“You constructed all this in a single morning?” Elsa’s jaw had dropped. “Where did you get this material…”
As she examined the blue strips of fabric and the makeshift netting her eyes grew wide and wider as she inspected herself to find that she was clad in nothing but her shift dress undergarment.
“That’s my dress!”
“Ya, you had enough fabric in that thing I could’ve made a whole other house! And the boning from the corset was a real help getting things sturdy.”
“You undressed me!”
“So? We’re sisters last I checked.”
Elsa’s modesty couldn’t help but notice that Anna was equally in a state of undress unfit for a lady. She wore a pair of simple slacks that ended at the middle of her calves and tied around a low waist with a piece of rope. Her shirt, or lack thereof, was missing a few buttons, a few sleeves, and several inches too short. Her bare ankles mocked Elsa’s sensibilities and were only eager to point out that Elsa’s ankles were also parading around the sand in nothing more than her pale skin.
“Last I checked, you told me that my sister had died. So who are you to take off my dress?” she said hoping that she wasn’t blushing.
Anna sat in her makeshift hovel with a sudden onset of melancholy.
“…You’re right. I’m sorry. The sister that you knew may have died, but perhaps I was hoping… considering that I saved you and all, that you could be… this Anna’s sister.”
Elsa came over, her heart suddenly heavy as she watched this brutish pirate transform into the girl she last saw ten years ago. She sat down next to Anna, their exposed freckled shoulders barely a hairsbreadth away.
“Anna… why did you run away?”
Anna looked down, twiddling her thumbs.
“I… I was betrothed to Duke Weasleton.”
Elsa tried to recall but confusion had clouded her memory.
“Weasleton? But he was so old. And didn’t he—”
“Die? Yes, he did die. After I left a letter opener in his eye socket.”
“Oh my God, Anna!
“Mother was going to disown me and sell me to a brothel. No way was I going to let that happen so I ran. Pretended I was a boy and stowed away on the first ship bound for the Caribbean.”
Without giving Elsa any time to dwell on her history, Anna changed the subject.
“I thought you were destined for the cloister?”
Taking the cue, Elsa obliged her sister’s request.
“I was, but after you left… I became mother’s only method for climbing the social ladder. You know I was never comfortable at social gatherings. Mother basically told me to smile, and not say anything or do anything. Conceal, don’t feel. Eventually, I caught the eye of one of the ‘princes’ of the West India Trading Company. I think you and I have spoken more words in the last few minutes than he and I spoke during our entire marriage, which admittedly was only just before we set sail.”
“You’re welcome.”
“I’m sorry?”
“For cutting your husband’s head off. Let’s have a toast!”
Anna reached behind her and pulled out from regions unknown a massive coconut. She reached around her other side and pulled out from different parts unknown a large knife. With the coconut in one hand and the knife in the other, she dexterously spun the coconut in her palm while slashing with the knife in precise timing to cleanly create a neat opening off the top of the husky surface.
“How did you do that?”
“Lots of practice. You should have seen the gash on my hand the first time I tried.”
“I’m glad I didn’t.”
Anna gave her sister the newly opened coconut and proceeded to open her own in the same fashion. With her own drink now ready, she motioned to Elsa’s coconut.
“To dead husbands and forgotten mothers!”
Elsa, a bit hesitant, found herself suddenly distracted. The scent of the freshly opened coconut combined with the stare of those green emeralds triggered a flutter she did not understand. She mentally shook the feeling away, concussion no doubt, and lightly knocked her coconut against the other.
“And to new sisters!”
\\///////////////////////////////
I have been stranded on an island with an unexpected companion. I don’t know how long it’s been. Time seems to pass differently here.
A moment ago, I found myself watching her for what seemed like hours. She was squatting on the beach, her elbows propped on her knees with her hands between them while she stared most intently at the sand below. I noticed that she was watching a crab enter to and fro from its burrow. At one point the crab came out of the hole and started scurrying about with its claws in the air like a little dance. Then Anna raised her own hands into the air, made little clamping motions, and started to scuttle across the sand after her newfound companion. It was absolutely absurd, this grown woman scurrying like a crab on the sand.
I can’t seem to reconcile this image of my sister who is just as boisterous, playful as ever, with this other woman. She hunted a wild boar, which she carried over her shoulders, seemingly with no effort, through the forest, barefoot, without a shred of decency. I could see the muscles of her arms tense under the weight. The freckled skin of her stomach has seen far more sun than any woman ought to. The heat and exertion caused beads of sweat to travel down her neck and across her collar bone…
It is a sight that I have neither seen nor read in my entire life and yet it is here and churning with the image of my sister scuttling across the beach. How do I reconcile such a thing?
And to make matters worse, she does not conduct herself as a lady should at all. As we explored the island, we hiked through rather rugged terrain. The ground was painful and I took quite a stumble. She had the gall to reach out and assist me as if she was a gentleman! I took the hand, grateful for the assistance nonetheless and she continued to aid me through our trek. As we scaled a wet rock, she lifted me as easily as the dead boar, and as I soared through the air, our arms glistening from the water and sweat, I couldn’t help but look up into those eyes. I thought I knew those eyes but… sometimes they stare at me in such a way…
How do I navigate these torrential feelings as they spin around my thoughts like the whirlpool of Odysseus? How can a single person be your oldest, dearest friend and yet also someone who you’ve just met… and who makes your heart skip a beat when you reach out and take her hand…and look into her eyes…?
“Wat’cha doin?”
Startled, Elsa nearly jumped out of her skin and sent the paper in her hand flying into the air where she hastily grabbed them to whisk away from her sister’s prying eyes. Anna had magically appeared behind Elsa as she sat on the beach.
A shudder trembled across Elsa’s skin as she felt the linen fabric of Anna’s shirt press against her bare shoulder blades. Two freckled arms wrapped around her shoulders and embraced her in a close but casual fashion. Yet Elsa did not receive such affection casually. She bolted up and spun to look at her younger sister who knelt in the sand with her head cocked like a confused fox.
“Really, Anna, why do you not act like a lady!”
Her response to this was to lean back, causing her shirt to stretch against her chest, and bend one knee over the other as she gave a taunting eyebrow raise to Elsa.
“I am perfectly capable of acting ‘like a lady’. In fact, It’s one of my favorite things to do.”
Elsa looked away at the sight sprawled out on the sand, basking in the sun and taunting her with wiggling eyebrows.
“Oh really?”
“You didn’t see my closet of dresses in my cabin. I can pull off quite a figure if I want to.”
“When does a pirate have need of dresses?”
Anna grew a mischievous smile. She rose from the sand and slowly sauntered over to where Elsa was standing.
“It’s one of my favorite cons. I go into one of the big cities, Port Royal or Havanna, I insert myself into the circles of aristocratic socialites whose husbands are either too preoccupied or too deceased to notice. I mingle, I dance…”
She reached out with her hand and placed a single pad of the tip of her middle finger on the edge of Elsa’s shoulder so lightly that Elsa barely felt it and yet a new shudder rocked her entire body.
“Maybe I enter the service of a… very respectable woman…”
The fingertip slowly danced across Elsa’s shoulder. It skipped over the sleeve and made its meandering way toward the base of her neck. All the while, Anna stepped around to once again place herself against the rapidly stiffening back of her sister. That single middle finger now moved in short, deliberate strokes, up and down, gradually undulating pressure against Elsa’s neck.
Her head couldn’t help but lean to the side, coaxing the finger to lengthen its stride, where she unwittingly leaned into the soft whisper of Anna’s voice against her ear.
“As I…delicately pull at the laces that bind such a… woman of standing, releasing her from her monotonous life of apathy, I let my voice carry between the edge of my lips and the arch of her ear…
‘What more will you have of me, my lady…’”
“I would have you devour me.”
“What?”
“What?” Elsa’s entire body and mind froze.
I didn’t… I couldn’t! Did I just…?
“Did you just—”
“I just—  I… jest! Yes, I jest, obviously. Really, Anna, you think I don’t know how to tease you back. I may be socially inept but I can surely tease my sister!”
Elsa broke free from her sister’s thrall, clutching the papers against her thundering chest. She shuffled down the beach, her legs as rigid as wooden pillars kicking up sand in their wake. Anna watched the pitiful sight stumble over a piece of driftwood, only to pick herself back up and continue on as if nothing had happened.
\\///////////////////////////////
Conceal, don’t feel. I must conceal for I can not possibly feel what I am feeling. I can not. I do not. I love my sister because she is my sister. I have missed this connection for so long… my mind is just confused. The heat, the concussion, the sheer insanity of this place. I should find Anna. Make sure that she didn’t take what I said as anything other than sisterly teasing.
As if on cue, Anna came bounding down the beach, arm swinging wildly to get Elsa’s attention.
“Els! Come look what I found!”
She grabbed Elsa’s arm and started pulling her back toward the way she came. Elsa kept pace this time and her arm relaxed into the grip that led it down the moonlit beach. They made their way over rocks and turned a corner into a small cove. Anna stopped and spread her arms out with a beaming smile of excitement.
“I don’t understand”, was all Elsa could think to say.
To Elsa’s horror, Anna lifted her shirt over her thick, maroon locks and threw it on the rocks. She now stood half-naked in the silver rays of the night sky.
Oh, dear God in Heaven and all that is good and decent in this world and the next…
“Just watch!”
Anna looked out on the water, as black as night with only the moonbeams cascading across the surface. Then in one swift motion, she dove in.
And Elsa’s eyes became filled with magic.
The water bloomed into a burst of color. Waves of blue light rippled across the surface, radiating out from the body that had penetrated it. Anna stood in the shallow water, surrounded by the light of heaven trapped within the waves of a starlight sea.
“What magic is this…?”
“Isn’t it awesome! They are like, tiny little animals that glow at night. Have you ever seen anything so beautiful?!”
“Never…”
“Well, don’t be shy Els. Dive in! They don’t bite or anything.”
Elsa hesitated. She looked at Anna, then at the black water below her, then at the mystical blue speckles dotting the surface around Anna’s waist, like a dress sewn by fairies that twinkled in the starlight. She placed one timid toe on the surface of the water and gasped in shock as spirals of blue light erupted from her touch. She looked once more to her sister who gave her the most reassuring smile in the entire world.
And she dove in.
Elsa soared through the azure sky, her loose hair flowing behind her as she came up from the surface near where stars in the sea met the stars that studded the pale skin of her sister’s body.
I can’t. I don’t! I won’t…
They stood inches apart, wading in the night sky like star-crossed constellations desperate to reach out and touch only to be perpetually far apart for eternity.
I mustn’t……..
She felt Anna peering deep into her soul. Did she wonder what was going on behind her eyes, as blue and brilliant as the luminescence surrounding their bodies? Could she sense the howling winds? Could she feel the thundering heartbeat through the water?
Would she feel it?
I… Oh to hell with it!!
The raging storm crashed against the surface. Hard and heavy and full of unbridled desire and longing. All at once, Elsa had released the torrent within her, letting the swells of her passion wash over her sister’s lips, her skin, her entire body, and soul. The magic had struck like lightning.
And then it was gone.
Anna pushed her sister away. That chasm of the cosmos restored.
“Elsa, what the hell are you—?”
“I am going to ask you a question, and I want you to answer me truthfully.” Elsa stood her ground in the heavens that would deny her.
“When you look at me, what do you see?”
“I don’t understand Elsa…”
“Do you see that girl, looking from her bedroom window? Her hand on the glass. Too afraid to go outside, too afraid to call out your name. Because when I look at you I see this girl. I see her laughing and playing and rolling around in the mud. But I also see this woman. Strong and kind. She makes me laugh, makes me inspired! I tremble when faced with the perils of the entire world, and yet she stands on top like it’s her domain! Tell me that I am insane. Tell me that all you see is that girl in the window and then I can be rid of these feelings that plague me for this impossible woman who can not be both sister and lover! Please—!!”
“YES, that is ALL I see!”
Anna was trembling. She still looked deep into her sister, locked by the pleading gaze no matter how much she wanted to turn away.
“That girl… that big sister who I left behind. When I look at you that is all I see.”
Elsa’s breathing finally started to slow. The words that she pleaded to hear had broken through the clouds of her heart and the calm would soon take over. The acceptance of what she already knew to be the way of the universe would come. Once back to civilization, she could resume her life. Banish the madness and—
“I saw her… every day. Everywhere. She was there when I joined a crew. She stood by me as I learned to man the wheel. I would not have survived a single day out here without her by my side.”
Elsa’s breathing had slowed to the point of imperception.
“…I saw her in the women that I knew. In…the women that I loved…It sounds so wrong but when you’re a young woman who relied on the faded memory of a long-lost sister for your support you can’t help but find that sister in any amount of affection you find! I had long accepted that it was my madness and I would take that madness wherever I go. And now that madness has taken a hold of you. When you came back into my life, I thought I could bury it, but instead, I passed it on to you.”
Each woman now turned away from the other, no longer able to meet each other’s solemn gaze.
“When we get off this island, I will go back to my ship and I will bring you to Curaçao and we will go our separate ways.”
Elsa simply nodded.
“I would still like to write you… if I can?” Anna’s voice had lost her usual commanding confidence.
“I would like that…” Elsa’s voice could barely carry itself over the narrow strip of water between them.
Anna slowly made her way across the water to the rocks where her discarded shirt lay. She buttoned the few remaining buttons over her chest when she heard the whisper of the water moving behind her.
Her dress clung to her body, revealed in the glow. Their eyes met for the first time once more and an inexplicable force dragged Anna back into the water and in the embrace of the siren below. Elsa’s hand caressed Anna’s cheek. Her finger traced lines down Anna’s neck. The span of cosmos between them receded until the storm that had once rocked both their celestial cores had dissipated and all that was left was their lips crossing the horizon. And Elsa felt her sister’s name on her breath once more as she finally released it to the wind.
“Would one night of madness be too much to ask?”

You were walking home after work on a rainy afternoon, one of your hands resting protectively on your belly. You were still in distress, but you were also extremely excited to finally become a mother. You loved your little one to bits.
In your hand you were holding a bag with new clothes. 9 weeks had passed since you had talked to your grandmother and most of your clothes didn't fit you well anymore: you needed new maternity ones.
In the past weeks you talked infrequently with Napoleon: this mission was incredibly demanding, and dangerous, you imagined, and he didn't have many occasions to safely phone you without risking to compromise his work. You missed him terribly. He was trying, as always, to reassure you, but you felt from his voice that he was very tired and always on the edge. You would have given anything to have him home safe, resting in your bed. On a couple of occasions you tried to tell him about the baby, but you never had the courage to bother him during a mission. You would have preferred to talk to him face to face, but weeks passed and he never mentioned the date of his return, so you had made up your mind to tell him on the next call.
Once you set foot in your apartment, you realised that the light in the kitchen was turned on. Maybe you had forgotten it in the morning? You hung your coat by the door, placed your shopping bag on the console table and moved towards the kitchen.
“I can't believe that you are home late from work for the first time in years right on the day I come back from the longest of missions” his unmistakable voice coming from the kitchen made your blood freeze in your veins.
You entered the room and saw him standing by the sink, washing something he had likely used to prepare what was now cooking in the oven.
“My lovely lady is having fun without her man at home? Did you go shopping? Did you meet...” he turned around and stopped dead on his tracks. His eyes went to your abdomen. The light blue dress you were wearing didn't do much to conceal your growing roundness.
He stood there for what felt like hours, his mouth gaping, his eyes focused on your belly.
He had a bruise on his cheek, you noticed. And he looked pale and tired. In another situation you would have run to him, taking him in your arms and caressed his bruised cheek, but your legs weren't working and your brain was exploding. Say something Leon. Please, say something.
“What have you done?” he talked like a robot. His usually caressing voice sounded cold.
“What have WE done” you answered with a strength you didn't know you had. Maybe it was your maternal instinct talking?
He finally moved his gaze to look in your eyes. Your hands went to your belly.
His gaze was as cold and empty as his voice. He wasn't looking at you with loving eyes as he had done for years.
“We?”
“It takes two people to make a baby.”
“But you...”
“I am the one with a baby bump. Yes, it works like that. You were listening during biology hour.”
“I didn't want this.”
“I know, but it happened. Now we can...” you attempted a weak smile, moving a step in his direction.
“No!” he shouted at you. You took a step back, scared by his violent reaction. He had never ever shouted at you. “I still don't want it.”
The first tear rolled down your cheek.
“I envisaged it” you whispered, bowing your head.
“You should have told me.”
“Why? You don't want this baby. What's the difference?” your voice was trembling.
“I wouldn't have bothered coming here, seeing you like that...”
You looked up and shot a furious look at him.
“Listen my... Y/N. I overreacted and I'm sorry for that. Still, I can't be a father. I never wanted to be a father. I shouldn't be there.” He started walking towards the door, but you blocked his way.
“Napoleon, what are you doing?”
“I'm going away. I can't bear to stay here.”
“This is your house.”
“You can keep it, if you want. Or sell it, do whatever you want.”
“I don't care about the house! But us? I'm your wife...”
“You're right” he nodded. “I'll talk to my lawyer. I think we can solve this easily and with full satisfaction for both of us.”
“Leon, what are you saying? You want to blow up everything we built like that?”
“I can't stay like this.”
“So you leave me because something is not like you want it?”
“It's something really important.”
You sighed, he wasn't listening to you. He had already made up his mind.
“This is the one thing I've always been against. I never asked for much...”
“You never asked for much??? Do you have the faintest idea of what I do for you? I've been lying for you to family and friends EVERY. SINGLE. DAY about nearly anything regarding you to protect you and your job for years. Last year you were away from home 273 days. 273 DAYS. And when you come back you were deadly tired and bruised or injured. Most of the time I have no idea of where you are and when you'll be back. Or IF you'll be back. We can't go to certain places because you fear you can be recognised or I can be related to you. We are not even in the damn phone book and YOU dare to tell me that you never asked for much???”
“You knew about it all before marrying me. And you never complained.”
“Because I love you, you idiot! I endured it all for you, because I wanted to be with you despite it all.”
He bowed his head and stayed silent for a moment. You were right, you knew it.
“This just happened” you began, getting closer to him, resting your hand on his arm. “It's nobody's fault.”
“I'm not accusing you. I just saw it coming. I knew a baby would have come to separate us. We couldn't be happy together for too long.”
“It's your baby Napoleon, for God's sake!”
He looked at you like you were speaking an unknown language.
“I... I have to go”. He moved away from you and went to the front door. “I'll come tomorrow to get my things when you are at work, so I won't disturb you. I'll have my lawyer contact you for the bureaucracy. You can keep everything you want.”
He turned his back to you and opened the door.
“Leon, we can't end it like this...” you started to cry.
“I know, but there's no other way.”
“I want you.”
“You can't have me. Not like this.”
He closed the door and walked away, into the night.
You felt all your strength slip away from you. Your legs turned into jelly and you had to lean on the wall to carefully help yourself to sit on the floor.
It went exactly how you had envisioned. It was your worst nightmare taking place in real life. He couldn't even look at you. You had shared so much and now everything was gone. All ruined.
No one made a mistake. No one did anything wrong. Yet, both of you were paying the price of it.
Well, three of you. Your baby having to grow without a father will be paying as well.
This was so unfair.
You felt your heart breaking into small pieces. You literally felt it burn in your chest.
You loved him.
Despite everything, even what had just happened, you still loved him.
You curled on the floor, caressing your belly, and cried uncontrollably for hours. Your sobs were loud. Your neighbours had probably heard you from their apartment. You didn't care. You were physically hurting so much and being heard was the last one of your problems. You needed to throw out at least a bit of that pain. But it didn't work. You were just desperate to have him back, even if he was the cause of your pain. You couldn't believe that he was now your ex husband. You had hoped to spend all your life with him, fearing only the dangers provided by his job could take him away from you, but instead it was your defenceless and innocent baby to separate you. How ironic!
It should be his hands caressing your bump to soothe you, not your own. He should be here cuddling you, whispering you reassuring words, but he was gone.
The thought of not seeing him again felt like a slap on your face.
You'll have to do it all by yourself. Going through the pregnancy, giving birth, raising the baby. Alone.
You should be hating him for how he behaved, for how he treated you, for having abandoned you, but you couldn't do without loving him anyway.
Sometimes things are easier when you hate someone.
You weren't good at hating in general, and it was impossible for you to hate him.
He would still be the love of your life, despite everything.
And this hurt even more.

these, our bodies possessed by light
1. land a man in a landscape and he’ll try to conquer it
--
Today was to be your wedding day.
Soon to be married to the devil king, all you could feel was trepidation and fear. Your marriage was not one for love, far from it; it was a marriage of compromise. Of sacrifice.
An offering of your life, for peace between the humans and demons, a reprieve from the cruelties of hell on earth.
You have a responsibility, your aunt told you as you dressed in the nicest gown you owned. It’s an honor, to have so great a task bestowed upon you.
I am going to die, you wanted to say. Your finest dress would become your funeral gown.
As one of the last witches, you were offered to the devil. With your unique abilities, the people of Red Grave hoped that you might find a way to end the devil king’s reign of terror. While it was true that you possessed some magical power, you were experienced mostly with healing and incantations, rather than combat magic.
You had met the man—if he could be called that—who was to be your husband only once before. You were relieved that at least, you would not have to live in the Underworld for this union; you would live in a palace that remained on earth.
No man nor demon on this world or the one beneath could face him. The people were sure that his was the wrath of a god, unleashed upon a defenseless humanity, and that such a great and terrible god could only be sated by the ultimate sacrifice, the gift of life.
However, you remembered that day—meeting your betrothed, slouched on his throne as you were presented to him. He had not been any more amenable to the marriage than you were. Impossibly tall, his features masked by demonic armor, you had been unnerved at the sight of him. You recoiled when you imagined the marriage bed—you could not possibly be expected to perform the wifely duties for such a creature, could you? He looked utterly monstrous to your human eyes: a twisted appearance, his body the color of brimstone and blood and covered in roots and thorns.
His voice was inhumanly deep and rattled your very bones.
“Is this to be my bride? A human?”
Despite yourself, you froze like a rabbit faced by the wolf. Your heart thundered and you could not help but cower, because what defense did you have against this creature?
You let your eyes settle on him. You could not discern even a hint of humanity in him, only the cruel cold glow of blue light in the gnarls of his skin, the suggestion of a crown by the thorns on his brow. There was no soul in those eyes.
The man beside you quailed, though he had been the one who had arranged all this. He said, “This is an offering from the humans. One of our most precious—one of our own. A great sacrifice.”
You were hardly as great an offering as he made you out to be. You were no virginal young maiden, no legendary beauty, nor the prized first daughter of a proud and subjugated lord. Your life and your body were being thrown away to sate the bloodthirst of a devil that did not even desire you. What use were you, really, to him?
He seemed to consider this. “I could kill her,” he said, “the night we are married. I have no use for human scum.”
Your blood ran cold. He couldn’t possibly—but this was a devil, not just any devil, but the king of them. You would not put it past him to kill you in cold blood. You knew that devils would not hesitate to execute any mortal that dared displease them.
And those who had come to his house before you, all killed by his hand, were the evidence: warriors that dared take arms against him, spies who attempted to undermine his power from the inside, and others like you, who had been offerings from their own hometowns. They, too, had been sacrificial lambs, offered to the demon king in a desperate bid for the legions of hell to stop ravaging the land, misguided appeals to the devil king’s nonexistent mercy. You knew not why those women had been deemed unsatisfactory, nor how many they numbered, only that they had all failed to suppress the devil king’s thirst for blood.
Rumors abound that he took wives not for procreation nor for pleasure, but for his own sadistic, murderous desires. Some lived for quite a while, others only a single day before being executed. But they all ended up the same way: dead.
Today, at your wedding, you had to find out how you could stay alive.
Before you left, you recited a spell of protection for yourself, so that you might not come to harm. You spoke the incantation from your memory as easily as you read it from a book, the familiar words and energy of the magic calming your mind. You pulled out a pendant you wore around your neck, a simple crystal you had infused with dormant power. This you poured your protective ward into, then hid the pendant beneath your wedding clothes. Then, a prayer, to the spirits above and below, that your magic might hold, and your treacherous intentions remain obscure.
Your betrothed had made almost no arrangements for the ceremony, not that you thought demonic weddings were even supposed to exist, anyway. There was simply a minister who had administered the rite upon the both of you, reading aloud the marriage vows and presenting the documentation of your union. One other demon was present as your witness, and that was all. You found you much preferred this, if the alternative were to get married with the people’s eyes upon you, watching and complacent at your sacrifice.
Your husband was called Urizen. He remained seated and he spoke no more than was absolutely necessary. There was no reception after the ceremony, only a dispersal of the scant amount of demons in attendance.
He did not stay with you afterwards, either. In fact, you would not see him until well after night had fallen.
In the meantime you were introduced to your chambers. Possibly the only good thing about this was that you would be living in comfort, however short the rest of your life might be. The palace was an old one, standing centuries before your great-grandparents were ever born, and comprised of so many rooms and structures that you could conceivably take years to explore it all. It was clean, surprisingly so, but cold and empty. It did not have the life of servants bustling around, or any other residents. Or maybe it did, and you had not seen neither hide nor hair of them. The palace was certainly large enough.
Of note were the books in what you assumed to be your husband’s room. There was an astonishingly large amount, and when you looked, they were mostly fiction and poetry, contrary to what you had thought. Some titles you even recognized, and many were well-worn, obviously read several times.
It was a strange detail, you mused, that a devil with such disdain for humans would so readily consume their literature. It was something that had kept the gears of your mind turning the rest of the day. You had a way with words, and writing had always been one of your strengths. This, along with the way your magic manifested, would be the key to your survival.
In the evening you took dinner alone. Despite being human, you were still considered with some respect, as you were served delicious food in a large and ornate dining hall. You were just completely alone; even the demons that served you were mere mannequins, unable to speak or perform actions beyond their purpose. You had the feeling that your new husband did not like to populate his home very much. You weren’t sure if that were better or worse; surely there would be no one to witness or call out to if he attempted to murder you, and you doubted that anyone would even notice in such a situation.
After dinner you washed up, spending so long in the bath you were sure you would shrivel up like a prune. You didn’t want to think about what was to come once you headed to bed; Urizen had not yet returned from wherever he had gone.
With apprehension you left the bath and dressed for bed. You wore a long nightgown, one that covered your body as much as possible. You missed your corset and your layers that shielded your body, much better than a simple nightgown could. You climbed into the bed, a large, ornate affair carved from dark wood and curtained with damask. The bed was sinfully soft, and against your better judgment you found yourself slipping into sleep as you lay there, wrapped in blankets and exhausted from the day’s events.
* * *
You didn’t want to do this.
Terror clasped at your very bones as the plan was explained to you: you, the last witch remaining in Red Grave, would be sent tomorrow into the devil king’s lair under pretense of an offering, as many other towns and cities had attempted to do.
“Hide your magic,” your aunt told you. “Find out what you can about his protections.”
“Yield to his demands,” your uncle instructed you. “Do what you must to survive.”
Numbly, you nodded, even as your veins ran cold.
“Your life is no longer your own,” they said. “The people of Red Grave count on you, now.”
The people of Red Grave had sent their men and women in futile attempts to fight the demon king. When that failed, they began to leave, or to bend the knee to cruel and demonic overlords. Some had fled to Fortuna, hoping that the supposed land of Sparda’s blessing would offer respite from the demonic invasion. Only a few years later was that hope disproven; demons installed themselves in that city’s highest of holy orders, and now Fortuna too bowed under the weight of hellish rule. Your parents had gone to war, too. They fought, and they died, and now you were expected to assume that burden.
You pressed a hand to the crystal that hung from your neck, a last gift from your mother, who taught you everything you know.
Then you silenced your fear. Outside, the summer flowers bloomed, mindless of the blood spilled on their grounds, and you promised upon your life to venture into the heart of the devil king.
* * *
You immediately woke at the opening of the door. You were still restless, after all. Moonlight still poured in through the window; you hadn’t been asleep long. The one who entered was a devil, one you recognized attending your wedding. From his chest he glowed orange, the light the color of molten rock, with an impressive set of wings extending from his back. He spoke:
“My lady. You are summoned to the throne room.”
You blanched at the address, though you expected it as befitting one who was the demon king’s wife. You supposed this made you a queen, but the title meant nothing when you felt like a prisoner. You were not allowed in the throne room, not unless you were explicitly summoned. Despite your position, you held no power in this place. All you had were your brains and the strength of your will.
“Y-Yes,” you wavered, and stood unsteadily, your hands wringing at the cloth of your nightgown. You followed the devil to the large room where Urizen stayed, dark save for the fireplace, kept lit with blue flames.
It was your husband, looking much the same as he had during your wedding. He still wore the same expression of cold indifference. At his side floated the ever-present red jewel, a mysterious object from which you could feel waves of strong demonic power. What manner of magic was it, you wondered?
“My lord husband,” you addressed him, taking a knee as you had been instructed to.
“Wife,” he grumbled, as if saying the word pained him. “Get up.”
You stood. Urizen was seated on his throne, one arm bending to support the chin, eyes skating over you to land on the flames in the fireplace as if you weren’t even there.
You had not moved. You bit your lip, wondering if what you had in mind would work, or if it were even sane. Once again, the image of the books next to the chair revived itself in your mind.
“My lord husband,” you said again, “may I interest you in a story?”
Your voice interrupted his brooding. He raised his head slowly from his hand, his face turning towards you in what looked like a silent fury. You hoped you hadn’t inadvertently angered him with your seemingly inane question.
“…A story?”
There it was, that deep, deep voice that sounded like the rumble of the earth itself. There was something strange in his tone: less animosity, something more akin to questioning. Maybe curiosity, if you were feeling generous.
“Yes,” you said, “I like to tell stories.”
You could barely keep the tremor from your own words. So far, he had done nothing, but Urizen still terrified you, as distant and dangerous as he was, the sound of his words before still echoing in your head.
I could kill her the night we are married. I have no use for human scum.
You didn’t know if he was serious or not. Maybe for now he would keep you alive, or maybe he would murder you later.
“You realize this is no harmonious marriage,” he said. “You mean nothing to me. I do not care about your stories.”
He sneered the last word. You could not help but shiver, but your mind’s eye once again found those well-worn books, stories and poetry that were clearly loved and perused. How long had it been, you wondered, since he had cracked open a book?
You settled yourself next to his throne. Carefully you started to speak, weaving the story you had formed in your mind. You had always been a lover of art, of literature, and you had dedicated many years of study to the humanities. You felt you could put together a story that would keep his attention and weave your spell so that your husband would not lay a hand on you and—maybe—change his heart.
To your astonishment he made no move to stop you. On the contrary, he seemed like he was listening, though he never said a word and never did he turn those cold eyes towards you.
You felt your resolve waver, but you didn’t let yourself falter, not when you had lulled him into this strangely receptive mood with your words. You still feared the devil—after all, he could so easily kill you, and even slouched in his throne you felt the aura of death from him. The red crystal revolved, silent and dangerous.
You continued your tale. You told it all the way until you had reached the last of what you’d written. The hero had fled the destruction of his hometown and met a young woman to whom he’d recounted his tale. He felt torn between his need for vengeance and the feelings that were quickly growing for her.
“Is that all?” Urizen asked.
You looked out the east window. The sky was swathed in violet and edged in gold by the encroaching sun.
“Morning approaches, my lord husband,” you said. “The story must be continued the next evening—I haven’t slept.”
He grumbled, but made no further complaint. Then, “Get out.”
“My—”
“Return to your chambers. Bother me no further.”
You quickly stood, nodded, and nearly ran out of the throne room. You weren’t sure how long you ran, or if you were even going in the right direction, but you made it back eventually.
You closed the door behind you, chest heaving, and not only from the running. You felt like you had just escaped with your life, and when you clutched a hand to your chest, your heart was pounding. You clenched your fists, fear and anxiety knotting between your lungs.
Knees weakening, you fell back into the large, soft bed, trying to calm your racing heart. After tossing and turning you fell finally into a restless sleep.
* * *
The next morning you woke alone. So, he didn’t have you killed in your sleep, at least.
When you looked out the window the sun was already high in the sky. You’d slept in a little; considering how late you’d stayed up the previous night, telling your husband your story, it was to be expected.
You hadn’t been given any actual responsibilities in your new home. You had the distinct feeling that Urizen considered you little more than a nuisance in his home; a thing without real purpose here. It suited you just fine: the more invisible you were in this den of demons, the more likely you were to get out of this alive. And the longer you stayed, the more you would become acquainted with the devil king, and his weaknesses, no matter how small those might be. All you needed was a single chink in his armor, and you’d be able to work your magic.
Your husband, to your knowledge, had never left the throne room. You could not go to check; the red devil that had escorted you there the night before was also nowhere to be seen. Was he just a servant, you wondered, or something more? His presence at the wedding implied the latter.
With you thus unoccupied, you decided to fill your day with exploration. The palace was undoubtedly beautiful, and you wondered why a devil would take such a place as residence. Maybe it was a site of great demonic power…? The home of a conquered human lord? You would not put it past the devils to take a man’s home as a war trophy. You were simply astonished at the state the house had been left in: it was pristine, as if servants cleaned it every day, as if demonic forces had never breached its walls. The glass of all the windows remained intact, the floors sparkling; elegant curling columns reaching towards beautifully painted, vaulted ceilings, and stained glass throwing multicolored light against the walls.
Wandering the halls, you trailed a hand absently along the walls. The sunlight shone brightly outside, and the thickness of the air signaled the height of summer approaching.
Somehow, you found yourself at the far corridor of the west wing. Judging by the sun’s position, it could not be later than noon, and so you thought a bit more exploring could not hurt until you were expected to take your midday meal.
This part of the palace was as pristine as the rest of it, just as clean and untouched, but the energy felt different here. Where you previously felt ignored by the few beings that crossed your path in the halls, here you simply felt… alone. It wasn’t a lonely feeling. On the contrary, you felt peace in the solitude.
At the end of this corridor was a large double door, vaulted, heavy and inlaid with colored tile. It was beautiful, and you couldn’t help but wonder what was inside. After checking to see that you were indeed alone, you placed both hands on the beautiful doors and pushed, making your way inside.
The room that revealed itself to you was a vast library, with towering shelves that seemed never-ending. Sunlight streamed through the large windows, so bright and the air so still that you could see the motes of dust floating.
The way the doors creaked and the difficulty in pushing told you that no one had set foot in here for a very long time. You supposed demons did not really have much time or purpose for human literature, though once again you thought of the books in your chambers. Were they Urizen’s? You doubted it when you thought about it. He had not been to those chambers with you, and it seemed in character for him to arrange a whole separate suite of rooms for you, far away from himself.
You looked again to the library you were in. A shame no one seemed to come here, because this place had been built to take advantage of the sunlight. There were tables and chairs for writing, and cozy little alcoves for reading. You could easily picture yourself spending hours here. Your parents had nurtured a love for reading in you, and you felt a prick of loss at the thought of them.
As you lightly ran your fingers across the spines of the books, reading their titles, the dust stirred. Truly, no one had come in here in recent memory but you. You thought maybe this could be your hideaway, far enough that you could feel even a little like yourself again, and still close enough by that you could easily validate your presence here. All these books would help, too, as would the ones in your bedroom, for crafting more of the stories that had somehow ensnared your husband’s attention. And if, by chance, they held magical knowledge as well, you could do some surreptitious research.
Moreover, it was simply a beautiful place. Even if you were not in the clutches of a devil, you would gladly come here every day.
The sun outside heralded the afternoon, and you knew you would be fetched and served lunch. Quietly, you left the library, closing the doors behind you. You could return another time, you thought. For now, you would acquiesce to the expectations (however little there were) of you.
In the throne room a human was being brought to kneel before the demon king. This man had dared protest his power and struck one of his knights in retaliation. Such insolence demanded punishment, and the decree for him was death.
“Do what you must,” said Urizen. “My power will not be challenged.”
He waved an imperious hand, sprawled as he was on his throne. The guards took the prisoner away, heedless of his piteous cries.
“I did nothing wrong! It was him, he—”
They dragged him to the courtyard, the man’s struggling making a spectacle of the walk. It was just your luck: the window overlooking that courtyard was the one right in front of you.
One of the silent knights struck him across the face with his metal gauntlet. He fell to the ground, and another pulled him onto the chopping block.
His pleas were cut short by the descent of the axe upon his neck.
You stared, barely believing what had happened right in front of your eyes. A man had been killed. You watched the blood spurt, the ground turn red beneath him. Above the body, the branches of a large, leafless tree swayed in the windless air, its bark as white as bone. Red splattered over that bone-white tree, soaked into the earth beneath, and his head rolled on the ground with a heavy thunk.
What had that man done? You weren’t shocked that executions were carried out here at the palace itself, but seeing it was another matter entirely.
Were you going to be next?
You had no stomach for the rest of your meal. You stood, fighting the urge to retch, and took off back to your room. Feeling numb, you hoped that you would not be summoned to attend to your husband in the evening. You weren’t sure you could take another fright in the same day. To distract yourself, you made notes on the story you had started the previous evening, in the case that you would need to provide a continuation. Your mind wandered, far from the confines of the palace walls, as you wove your tale.
Of course, right before you were about to begin your evening toilette, the same devil from the night before came to your room to escort you to Urizen once again. Various other demons came in and out of the palace during the day, but this one was the only one you had encountered at night, not counting the mannequin demons that cleaned and served in the kitchen.
In case this devil was going to remain as your chaperone, you deigned to ask him his name.
“I can’t really say, my lady. But you can call me Tony.”
You noted there was a strange, clipped quality to his words, as if some spell or physicality prevented him from uttering his name. Or maybe you imagined it because demons had different voices than humans. More than that, though—
“Tony?” you echoed. “That’s…” An unusual name for a demon, you were going to say. Much too… human. His face, too, was far more humanlike than the other demons you had encountered.
To your surprise, he chuckled. “A weird name? Sounds better than Urizen, I’d say.”
His nonchalant manner took you off guard. You hadn’t been expecting this at all.
“I only meant that I didn’t expect a devil to have such a normal sounding name,” you explained.
He shrugged. “It doesn’t need to be complicated. Just Tony is fine.”
Before you knew it, you were back again in the great hall, standing before the doors to the throne room. Tony walked ahead of you to open the doors and once again, you saw your husband.
You walked through the large room, one you surmised was the largest one in the entire palace, approaching your spouse. Tony remained outside.
You tried not to let the images from earlier that day distract you too much. The man’s cries. The blood seeping into the ground. The tree that moved by itself.
You nearly crumpled the notes in your hand.
“Wife,” Urizen said, in that deep, dark tone. There was no discernable expression on his obscured face, and none in his voice. You bowed before him and awaited his instruction.
“The tale from yesterday. Continue it.”
You breathed a sigh of relief. As long as this remained all he asked of you, you would be okay, probably. Shuffling through your notes, you began to recite the rest of the story.
Again he offered neither comment nor interjection, or really any reaction at all, which you supposed was the best you could hope for at the moment. The plot you’d woven was fairly basic: the hero of this story was torn between his mission and the growing love between him and the lady who had rescued him, and while he was making to leave, the lady asked to accompany him. She wanted to help him, she said. He did not want to get her involved in his problems.
“This is not just about you!” said she. “I lost loved ones in that attack too. And who’s to say they won’t attack this town too—”
“I have a mission. It’s dangerous.”
“With them out there, everywhere is dangerous,” she said. “I am going whether you want me to or not.”
Cursing his mission for vengeance, she left him to seek a new home for her family.
“What a strange tale,” Urizen said.
“Wh-what?” This was the first time he’d spoken about the story itself. You couldn’t tell whether he meant the comment as a compliment, or as a sign he disliked it, and a shiver of panic rose in you.
“If that is all, you may go.”
You weren’t done, but you also didn’t want to go against his word.
“Then I shall resume tomorrow evening, my lord husband.”
He said nothing, only waving his hand in dismissal. You gathered up your notes, bowed hastily, and left the room.
You wondered—why did he decide to comment on the story now? Was there something about the tale he disliked? He had given no clue as to his feelings, as always. His expression had remained inscrutable and distant. Your hands clenched around your books and papers, frustrated.
Tony was nowhere to be found outside. Alone, you walked back to your room, returning to fitful sleep.
“So? What about it, V?”
There was a crow perched on the top of an armchair in the library, where a young man sat deep in thought.
“Think she’s the one?” the crow asked the young man.
“She has power, I can feel it,” he responded. In his hands he held a book, idly flipping through the pages.
“But what about—"
He interrupted the crow. “She’ll come back. I’ll speak with her then.”
“If you’re sure,” the crow said. “Y’know, I could always fly out there, get her to come if you can’t—”
“No need,” he responded. “What she needs is here. She’ll come back.”

OWL HOUSE X CTHULHU MYTHOS: GODS AWAKEN (XIX)
Odalia walked into Emperor Belos’ throne room and prostrated herself before him and Nyarlathotep. “Lord Nyarlathotep, I have retrieved the book.”
Luz and Amity awoke in the original bodies and sprung back to life. “Uh? What happened?”
Amity groaned and fell backward her head throbbing with pain. “Why is my head spinning?” Her cheeks grew green and bloated out of the instinctive urge of retching whatever sour contents were churning in her stomach.
“So that is apple blood,” Luz spoke to herself, “after this, I’m never going to try that stuff again.”
Amity and Luz stared at each other surprised to find that they were back in their own bodies. They waved their hands in front of their faces and squeezed their arms until they took on a bluish hue. Their probing would only strengthen the notion that they were truly back in their bodies. But one thought came to their minds: if they were borrowing the bodies at the time, then what happened to the original host’s souls?
“Welcome back to the Isles, human.”
Belos had gotten off his throne and his large frame towered over the two. Unlike Odalia’s height at around 6 feet, Belos stood at a startling 8 feet. He eclipsed obviously Kikimora, his most trusted servant and right hand, but he was also an imposing figure when it came to the members of his imperial guards. This only accentuated the perceived majesty and authority he encouraged from his worshippers.
Luz stared at the Emperor with contempt manifesting on her face. “Belos.”
“I see that you are still bitter over our last encounter?” Emperor Belos asked. It was more a rhetorical question, really, but one he made out of amusement.
“Where’s Eda?” Luz asked.
Emperor Belos raised his hand. “Unharmed, I assure you, but we must keep her from interfering with our plans.”
He looked at the murals depicting the wild witches. “As you may have guessed I had...taken care of the wild magic practitioners...one by one.”
Luz internally shivered at the implications of what he was entailing. He raised his staff and carefully traced an invisible line through the savage witches on the murals. “The Day of Unity is now upon us.”
“How dare you send your hideous monsters to attack my home?” Luz demanded. Her fists shook and turned red to match the increasing anger in her face.
Belos chuckled. “It was more of a method of ringing you out; I knew that because of your compassionate heart that you would rather give yourself up than allow more of those rats to die in your stead.”
“Well, you got me now,” Luz stated never taking her eyes off Belos’, “so leave the Earth alone.”
Belos tilted his head. “The Titan proclaims that the Earth must be laid to waste before it returns to its full powers. There is no stopping the inevitable. The Earth will bleed a deep, gushing red, before it crumbles away to its slow, miserable, pitiable demise.”
Luz fought the urge of drawing a glyph to cave Belos’ head in. “Mami..”
Belos’ eyes flickered and glowed. “Oh, your mother? She is here.”
Luz’s eyes shot up. “She is.”
The metallic fingers of his gloves came together to create an echoing snap. Warden Wrath walked into the throne room alongside the Owl Spy. Luz’s eyes widened, her mouth hanging agape. A middle-aged woman with dark brown hair and tan skin was brought in with chains. A metal ring was fixed around her waist, and the heavy metal shackles around her ankles echoed on the floor in miserable tune.
She wore glasses topped with a red frame. From what Luz could see, she was a continually tired woman with heavy bags behind her glasses. Her hair was in a disarray as well as her uniform, one of those outfits you would see in hospital settings. Tears were crudely decorated on the woman’s uniform, particularly towards the bottom where the hem of her shirt was.
“Mom?”
The woman looked up to see Luz running towards her. “Luz!?”
Luz jumped and practically tackled her mother. “Is it really you?”
“It is me,” she stated. She tried to hug her daughter back with her limited capabilities. “I have been so worried about you.”
“I’m sorry, Mom,” Luz said, looking down. “I didn’t actually go to that summer camp that you wanted me to.”
“I am just delighted to see that you’re okay,” she replied, “when those letters stopped coming in, I almost had a mental breakdown.”
Luz felt moisture building in her eyes. She hated that she had to put her mother through that, but she had no other option in order to keep Belos from getting to Earth. She knew that at some point, the letters that she would send her Mom would soon drain up, but she was the optimist believing that she could find a way back home before her mother had the chance to worry.
Amity scanned the woman Luz was hugging. “Who is that, Luz?”
Luz looked back at the young witch her smile shining brighter than before. “This is my Mom, Amity.”
Her mother gave a smile, but it was more forced given the circumstances. Amity’s thoughts spiraled out of control. “My future mother-in-law?” she asked.
“What was that?”
Amity quickly caught herself. “Um, your mother and my mother in the same room.”
Luz’s eyebrow peaked. “Why are you here, Mom?”
Emperor Belos interrupted the reunion disgracefully. “Yes, why don’t you tell my grandchild why you are here, Camila?”
The room grew quiet with not even the sound of a pin dropping on the floor could spur any response. Luz eyed Belos sternly. “Grandchild? What are you getting at?”
“My, Camila, you kept this secret about yourself successfully hidden for years?” Belos asked again.
“Mom, please, tell me what is going on.”
Camila sighed. She exhaled sharply now looking at her feet in deep shame. “Luz, you love the Good Witch Azura books, don’t you?”
Luz nodded. “Me and Amity both; we bonded over them.”
“What if I were to tell you that there is some truth to those books?”
Luz couldn’t understand what her mother was saying at first, but it did slowly start to dawn on her. “Are you saying that you’re Azura?”
Camila snickered a bit and shook her head. “No, no; Azura is a fictional character...but I did use creative liberties when it came with writing the books.”
The thought that the events of the books, regardless of whether they came about as fictious stretches of the actual events, crossed Luz’s mind. “Why did Belos call me his grandchild?”
Camila sighed. “When I was around your age, I found myself in the demon realm much like you – I can’t for the life of me remember how if it was through some door or other means – but I was a foreigner in a world that discriminated against humans.”
Luz listened carefully not noticing that Odalia was singling for her daughter to be taken away.
“One day, Emperor Belos discovered me with some old scraps of metal and trash and decided to adopt me for reasons I did not understand at the time. He told me that humans were unable to practice magic on the Boiling Isles because of them lacking the bile sac necessary for it, so he placed a bit of his evil, dark magic into my body and took me as a protégé.”
“So that was why I was able to see those glyphs?” Luz asked.
“After being trained under him for some time, he told me of the Day of Unity. It was some weird, cultish holiday I had initially taken it. But I soon found out what intentions he had for the Earth, and I fought against him. With his own magic surging through my veins, I easily overpowered the Emperor and...I might have caused him to be in his current unhealthy state of being because I can sense now that Belos is slowly dying.”
Luz saw discarded palisman carcasses around Belos’ throne. “Was that why you wanted me to stop being obsessed with fantasy books and magic?”
Camila nodded her head. “It was a selfish thing for me to do, but I wanted to protect you from the knowledge that such a world existed.” She looked at her feet again likely fearful of meeting her daughter’s eyes. “That was why I was hopeful that the trip would remove that desire so you would never come to this world.”
Luz didn’t know what to say after being given such a bombshell. Her mom knew about the Boiling Isles because she had been there at some point only to somehow escape once things got sour. Now she learned that Belos took her mother in and how she was now his granddaughter. She had his malevolent magic flowing through her body. Her heart was pumping his unholy blood into her veins and through her bloodstream. It made considerable sense because, as was explained to her by Eda years ago, humans could not practice magic.
“Luz?” Camila asked.
Luz was still speechless and incapable of reaction. Belos laughed again and tapped Camila’s forehead with the staff. “I was hoping that I could take your daughter in and have her as a protégé to turn her against you, but that plan went awry.”
He glared at Warden Wrath. “Take her to the execution site.”
Warden Wrath shook his head and grabbed a hold of Camila. Camila’s legs shook but were heavily weighed down by the shackles. “Luz!”
Luz tried to run after Warden Wrath, but Odalia shot a blue stream at Luz; it ripped into the floor dividing it in half. “No wrong step, or I will slice you in two as well.”
“Mom!” Luz shouted. She shot daggers from her eyes at Belos. “Unhand her at once!”
Belos shook his head. “The sins of the past must be made to pay for.” He exited the throne room before turning around once he reached the exit behind the beating heart of the Titan. “I’ll have my master take it from here.”
Nyarlathotep, once more in his Black Pharaoh guise, approached the girl. “Hello once again, Luz.”
“It’s you!” Luz shouted and pointing her finger at accusingly. “Was this all your idea!?”
“I’m not a man who has pre-made plans just hanging there collecting dust,” Nyarlathotep said with a half-serious tone. “Odalia, give her the Necronomicon.”
Odalia’s eyes shot up. “Lord Nyarlathotep, why would-”
“That is an order,” Nyarlathotep replied. His voice went down a couple octaves.
Shaking, Odalia handed the Necronomicon to the human girl and made her leave. Luz had a weird feeling about this. “What game is this?”
“When you are literally older than time itself, it’s always best to play a game to take a load off your mind,”  Nyarlathotep answered.
Nyarlathotep snapped his fingers. Above him was a column wherein a trap door opened. From there, she could see a large, glass cage descending. She squinted her eyes to make out the figures. Eda, King, and Lilith were inside. At the side of the cage was Hypnos, once more in his youthful appearance, flowers and all. He held the piece of horn in his hand.
“Eda!” Luz proclaimed.
Eda looked up happy to hear her apprentice’s voice. “Kid, you made it!”
King and Lilith also turned their glances to Luz. King jumped up and down much like how a dog does whenever they are happy to see their owner come back. Lilith smiled as well, but it was a small one. Luz slammed against the cage’s walls. “Youch!” Luz rubbed her injured nose with her hands. “You guys are alive?”
“Nyarlathotep took us as prisoners and had us as bargaining chips for you,” Lilith explained.
“Well, don’t worry, I’ll have you out lickety split!”
“Wait, Luz!” Eda screamed.
Luz smashed her fist on the glass only for it to bounce back. Thinking, Luz looked into the bag to find something she could use to break the cage. She scribbled glyphs on paper and activated them, but it only made the magical glass stronger. Luz turned to her bag again this time drawing out the jar containing the shoggoth. She tossed it at the cage, but, like with the other objects she tried to use, it rebounded and skyrocketed off the glass. It shot across the room and exited out the door when Kikimora opened it.
“Luz, you can’t break the glass; we all tried to break it ourselves, but there’s no use,” Eda said at last.
“There has to be something..” Luz lamented.
“Aye, there is a way, my dear,” Nyarlathotep answered.
“Why should I trust you?” Luz asked in a matter-of-fact way.
“The glass can either be broken two ways; either I can use my powers to free the three captives, or an Elder God can destroy it.”
“Well, I want you to free them!” Luz declared.
Nyarlathotep held his finger up. “Quid pro quo, my dear, quid pro quo.”
“Squid pro what?” Luz reiterated.
“I will free them and you will all go on to live happy lives if you gave me the book.”
Luz held the demonic book between her arms. “But I can’t just give the book over to someone like you.”
“Why not?”
“Because you’re evil; I know somehow you were responsible for the attack on the Earth; a lot of people could die if I gave you this book.”
“Are a million lives more important to you than the lives of your mentor; her sister; and your pet?”
“I am not a pet!” King remarked.
Nyarlathotep ignored the demon and kept speaking. “It would be an unfortunate occasion if they were ripped away from you.”
“Nyarlathotep, before you do your business with the three captives, do allow me the opportunity to give this demon his horn back.”
Nyarlathotep looked at the Elder God with suspicion, but flicked his hand. “At least he should be presentable before dying I presume.”
Nyarlathotep snapped his fingers allowing a small hole to form in the wall. Hypnos slipped the horn into the hole and it resealed after he removed his hand. Eda eyed the horn piece with curiosity. “It looks like it’s the size of your horn, King.”
She dropped the horn in King’s lap and he sniffed it. “Feels like it; smells like it to...how did I lose it again?”
He shrugged and dropped it over the crack of his horn. Before he could say anything further, the missing horn piece slipped in like a jigsaw puzzle. A green light glowed around the horn acting as an adhesive glue. In a flash, everything became crystal clear to King as his memories came blasting in at full force. An overtaking sensation. It all came flashing at once: the woman. The large, bat-like monstrosity with the one, three-lobed, bulging eye. The screams. And the smoky vapor – now he could perceive that it materialized together to form the appearance of a man. A tall man wearing a dark cloak. One who was bereft of any strand of hair and his skin darker than the darkest night. The green orb came out from a spell circle the hideous man drew. His mouth was stretched inhumanly widely into a twisted, ghastly grin.
“Well, what do we have here?” he asked.
King sprawled on the floor of the cage sweat beads rolling down his skull head. He retched but nothing came up. Panic was building within him writhing in anguish for release. He looked at Nyarlathotep with complete hatred. “You were the one who killed my Mom, weren’t you?”
Nyarlathotep looked at him with an amused smile. “You have to be more specific than that, child; I may be eternal, but that doesn’t mean I have an internal memory box that catalogues every individual scream.”
Luz gripped the Necronomicon with anger. “So you killed King’s mother and cursed him?” She looked at the despairing demon. “And you decided to take it as a memento to remember your kill?”
Nyarlathotep shrugged. “As I have said, I cannot be held to remember every one of my little endeavors.”
Nyarlathotep snapped his fingers again. This time, the top of the cage opened with a gush of running water dropping down. Eda and the others were not too freaked out in that moment, but they could quickly see that the more water flowing into their cell, it was accumulating quickly and already taking the shape of the cage. They looked at Nyarlathotep who in turn gave them a look of humor. They banged their fists against the cage’s walls, but it only rebounded on them.
“Nyarlathotep! Stop this nonsense!” Luz yelled. “You’ll drown them.”
“I will free them,” Nyarlathotep promised, “but you will have to give me the Necronomicon in return.”
“And how do I know that you won’t go against your promise?” Luz asked reasonably. It made sense for her to doubt the Crawling Chaos’ claims, but in her peripheral vision, she saw that the water was already up Lilith and Eda’s waists. King jumped on top of Eda’s head to keep his body dry, but this had the negative effect of pushing Eda deeper into the rushing water.
“I’m afraid that they don’t have long for this world, Luz.”
Eda and Lilith were up to their necks. “I always thought it would end by some overdose on potion,” Eda lamented.
Concern was in Lilith’s eyes, but she chuckled at the dark joke. “That’s my Edalyn, alright.”
Luz found herself in internal conflict. She truly wanted to save the three roommates she had, but she couldn’t just hand a book of such cosmic power to the bad guy. Nyarlathotep seemed to read her mind when he spoke again.
“I feel that you think that if something were to befall your teacher, you would be lost in the world.”
Luz squinted. “What?”
“If you were to give the book to me, I will make you my personal protégé; you will learn about all the secrets of this world and truly become the most powerful witch on the Boiling Isles. Leagues above your mentor, and even Belos himself. You can reign by my side as I destroy this world and remake it befitting to our image. The universe and the gods themselves will look at you in favor and you would never have the need to want again. Is that a deal?”
Luz could admit that Nyarlathotep’s deal did have a kernel of her interest. Knowledge over everything could come in handy. While she did love Eda dearly, Eda was at a loss now because of her magic being at an all-time low. Maybe with Nyarlathotep’s help, she could learn a way of curing Eda of her curse and subsequently return her back to her previous state. As she thought, she took another glance at the cage now taken aback. The three captives were completely submerged in the water and were desperately hitting the walls of the cage in hopes of breaking them. Liquid was filling their lungs, cutting their oxygen supply sharply. They moved their legs back and forth in a fishy motion. Yet for every strike and punch they could muster, the cage’s walls jiggled back from the brunt force.
Luz turned to Nyarlathotep. “No; I refuse.”
Before Nyarlathotep’s eyes, Luz flipped the Necronomicon over revealing several fire glyphs on the back. Nyarlathotep’s eyes bulged from their sockets. “Mortal, please reconsider!”
Luz took another glance at Eda and the others and saw that their movements were screeching to a halt and they sunk towards the ground of the cage. Luz had made her decision. She slammed her hand on the back of the Necronomicon, and it erupted in flames.
“No!” Nyarlathotep screamed.
The flames licked the ancient, crisp pages of the Necronomicon and exploded. A shrill hiss filled the air to indicate that the malevolent spirit lurking in the pages of the banned book was dying. Dark green, eldritch smoke crawled out of the embers of the fire and ascended skyward. Luz heard the pages crackle and pop reminding her of the sweet smell of fresh popcorn like the kind you could get at movie theaters. With one final death throe, the Necronomicon crumbled into a heap of ashes.
Luz looked at Nyarlathotep spitefully. “You have lost, Nyarlathotep.”
Instead of seeing his hurt, irritated face, Nyarlathotep was once more smiling. He chuckled deeply from the darkest, deepest regions of his stomach. He held his hands over the burning heap that was once the Necronomicon and absorbed a black light that suddenly appeared. He grew larger with his arms and legs becoming more muscular and pronounced. His abdomen became gargantuan as well to accentuate his broad shoulders. No more did he resemble a human, even if a crude mockery of one. He was now a hulking monster with rows upon rows of sharp, jagged teeth.
A wave of dark power rocked Emperor Belos’ throne room and empire. It shattered the glass cage containing Eda, Lilith and King, and they were washed out on the floor. Eda coughed up the water in a wheeze. “That was close.”
Before she said anything else, she saw Nyarlathotep tower before them. Alerted, she looked at Luz. “Kid, did you destroy the book or not?”
“Yes, Eda, I did, but...something came up that I did not anticipate.”
The ceiling shook and debris started to sprinkle down. From the point of origin, the dark wave of evil magic wreaked havoc through the Isles due to its intensity. Many of the imperial guards were caught in the wave and effortlessly disintegrated. Buildings and houses crumbled from their destroyed foundations compelling the denizens to evacuate from their houses lest they were the casualties. Emperor Belos hid away alongside Kikimora.
“Sire, what happened!?” Kikimora asked.
“It is nothing to be concerned about, Kiki,” Emperor Belos replied. He eyed his throne room. “So it did work as planned.”
Nyarlathotep cackled his deep, monotonous voice shaking the floor. “It has been a thousand years, but it was completely worth it!”
Luz couldn’t comprehend what had happened. “But..but I destroyed the Necronomicon; you saw it.”
“I had already overseen the notion that you would refuse to rule by my side, but the good thing about it is that even if you accepted, it wouldn’t have mattered. I would still have reclaimed the powers that I lost. Even if you destroyed the book, that would entail that my powers would be returned to me either way.”
Luz looked down. “Then it is truly hopeless.”
Nyarlathotep raised his large scepter. “Before I lay waste to this world, I did promise Boscha that I would humor her little battle with your friend; may as well set the stage for it.”
“I’ll find a way to stop you,” Luz declared. It was a heat of the moment thing, but she truly did mean it.
Nyarlathotep chuckled. “After Boscha wins, I guess I’ll honor my deal with Belos and destroy the Earth for good measure.”
With that, Nyarlathotep transformed into a black wind and swirled out of the throne room cackling his head off.

more scattered naruto thoughts now that we’ve finished season 8 -
[spoiler policy disclaimer first, as always: I am watching naruto for the first time and have only gotten up to the end of season 8 (after pain destroys the hidden leaf village).  i am trying to avoid spoilers, so please don’t interact with this (tags included, because the notifications now show them to me automatically) with any spoilery commentary, including even general things like “oh i love this show but it gets less good after X point” or “X season is better than Y season” or any general assessments of quality/likability/etc re: future seasons.  Thank you! <3 ]
- i like the way S8 ended.  i know that in real life maybe it wouldn’t be so feasible to just talk your enemy back to the light, but honestly, i don’t care.  i love that shit.  i love stories when people refuse to hurt the people who hurt them first, and then their seemingly inconceivable choice to refrain from striking back creates a connection (it’s the ‘return of the jedi’ effect, folks).  i understand that it doesn’t work like that in real life most of the time, and i don’t recommend it for real life people trying to defend themselves, but i do love it in fiction.  i LOVED how naruto went in pursuit of nagato to talk to him, not fight him.  even though naruto says straight-up “i can’t forgive you” / “I want to kill you so badly i can’t stop shaking” - he still recognizes that his enemy is someone who’s been victimized, and he has enough compassion to feel pain on their behalf even when he himself is reeling from having his entire home destroyed and both of his teachers murdered by the person he’s confronting.  his choice to control his (valid) rage and extend a hand in compassion is ultimately what changes the outcome and saves everyone who would have died, reversing the damage that was done, and i love that shit.
- absolutely adore yamato abandoning his own mission and taking off at a run to try and help naruto when he senses that naruto is losing control over the nine-tails.  this man thought he was just a substitute teacher for a while there, but he’s become part of the family while he wasn’t looking.
- HINATA.  oh my god i couldn’t even enjoy this incredible moment because i was so stressed out (and angry, at the time, because i really thought they were going to kill her, and that would’ve crossed my line).  i want to watch this again knowing that she’s fine, because my anxiety over ‘fuck fuck fuck they’re actually going to kill one of the kids’ precluded me from even appreciating it appropriately.
- there’s been a lot of talk on this show about how sakura doesn’t have as much chakra as naruto or sasuke, but she heals people non-stop the entire time Pain is attacking and doesn’t show any signs of running dry.  SHOW HER SOME RESPECT.
- CHOOOOOOOOJIIIIIIII!  omg.  i was so afraid that his father was actually dead, and SO RELIEVED that he was okay.  you can’t do that to choji!!!
- also relatedly, how much do i adore choji for caring so much about kakashi?  <333 i mean this kid is there sobbing over his dead body, and then he bursts out crying when kakashi comes back to life - i really appreciate these little ties between characters who aren’t always in close quarters but who do have a relationship.  kakashi has been a teacher to ALL of the kids, and team 10 especially feels indebted to him - the respect and affection they all feel for him is very real.
- first time i actually thought ‘ok he’s cool’ with regard to minato was when he talked to the nine-tails so unfazed like “he’s a loudmouth.  let’s go somewhere more quiet.’  i’ve been kind of so-so on his character so far, but i liked this.
- also later in that scene - the (rare) scenes we’ve seen where naruto totally breaks down absolutely kill me.  it happened once when gaara was dead, and then there’s another moment in this episode when he’s talking to minato - whoever voices him does just incredible work in those moments, and it is SO PAINFUL to me because naruto is always such a happy kid the rest of the time and eternally optimistic and positive and excited and popping back up every time he falls down, and so when he cracks it is just devastating to see.  i hate seeing him cry like that.
- similarly - that shot of sasuke at the end of the itachi arc wrecked me.  naruto’s breakdowns are upsetting, but at least he allows himself to have them - when he gets pushed past a breaking point, he explodes.  he cries and yells and spills every single thought in his head in front of everybody who’s around him, and after it’s done, things get better.  he’s with people who care about him.  he’s venting and making himself understood, and he always finds his equilibrium again.
sasuke, though, has been completely locked down ever since we saw him sneak out of the hospital to wander around the scene of his community’s mass murder, and he’s still locked down now, even crying all alone at the edge of the ocean.  this moment isn’t cathartic.  it isn’t a release.  this is barely even a sliver of what this kid has going on inside him, and it looks like it’s agonizing for him to even let that much out.
- the scene where naruto is about to give up and give in to the nine-tails’s power...that exchange!!!!!!!
i don’t know.  it hurts.  i hate this.  i don’t know.  what should i do.  i don’t know anything anymore.  someone...please help me.  give me...an answer.
destroy everything.  erase anything that causes you pain.  give me your soul, your spirit, your vital essence.  give it to me, and in exchange, i will rescue you from your pain.
this whole exchange is amazing.  the way naruto says ‘it hurts’...this is one of those scenes that expands to cover so much more ground than just what’s onscreen at that moment.  what naruto overcomes here is precisely the trap that sasuke has not been able to escape.  sasuke has never had any framework for dealing with pain that isn’t about pursuing vengeance.  it’s the only way he thinks he can free himself from his pain - by putting all of his energy into destroying the people who hurt him.
but it becomes an endless cycle, because he never succeeds.  itachi dies and sasuke feels worse than ever, so he turns his attention to the hidden leaf in an attempt to finally kill what’s hurting him.  but even if sasuke were to raze the entire village to the ground, his pain would still be with him, and he’d then have to turn his attention to yet another target, because the alternative would be to recognize that he can’t escape his pain by destroying the things that hurt him, and that’s not something he’s able to accept right now.  he’s spent half his life fixated on the idea that revenge can rescue him from how terrible he feels, and abandoning that idea now would mean that nothing can save him.  it would mean that he’s going to hurt like this no matter what he does.
kakashi tried to warn him about this.  he tried to tell sasuke that even after getting his revenge, sasuke wouldn’t feel better, that he’d only tear himself apart trying to achieve something that would leave him feeling empty - but sasuke was too entrenched in his own warped thinking to believe it.  and ever since then, sasuke has been in the company of people who are happy to let him dig himself deeper and deeper into a self-destructive hole as long as it benefits their agenda.  they don’t care if he’s hurting himself.  they’re happy to see him suffering.  his pain is a tool they can use.
- a note re: kakashi, when it comes to this topic -
i think it’s relevant to remember that kakashi never tells sasuke not to pursue revenge because it’s “wrong” or ethically questionable.  he never delivers any moralizing speeches in the vein of “if you kill someone who victimized you, you’re just as bad as they are.”  kakashi doesn’t think it’s wrong if itachi dies, and if sasuke were in a better state of mind, he probably wouldn’t even mind if sasuke were the one to kill him.  that’s why kakashi is comfortable helping team 10 pursue asuma’s killers, after all - because they’re not unbalanced by rage or making self-destructive decisions; they’re acting with clear heads and pursuing a course of action that needs to be taken anyway (asuma’s murderers are on their way to the leaf to capture naruto - they need to be dealt with regardless).  team 10′s kids can handle that mission - they’re thinking straight.  they’re comfortable accepting adult guidance.  they’re grieving, but they’re okay.
sasuke is not.  sasuke has been deeply traumatized since he was a very young child, and encouraging his quest for vengeance is equivalent to validating all of the fucked-up thought patterns that are hurting him so badly - that it was his responsibility (as a seven year-old child) to protect his clan, that he was weak and cowardly for running away, that he needs to take itachi down as penance for failing to save his family, that killing itachi is the only way for him to justify his childhood survival, that killing itachi will free him from his pain.  for kakashi to encourage any of these false convictions would be irresponsible and, ultimately, harmful to the child he’s supposed to be looking after.  if sasuke gets his revenge on itachi, he’s just going to be left with the horrifying realization that his pain hasn’t lessened even the slightest bit, except that now he also has to deal with the additional trauma of killing someone he used to love.
kakashi doesn’t discourage sasuke from revenge because Revenge Is Morally Bad and You Are Morally Bad For Pursuing It; he discourages sasuke from revenge because in this particular case, sasuke’s fixation on revenge is hurting him.  it’s unhealthy for him, and it will cause him worse pain in the future if he allows it to continue driving his life.  sasuke is never going to feel better if he doesn’t stop distracting himself from his pain by focusing solely on vengeance.  if he’s ever going to actually be rescued from his pain, he needs to face (and FEEL!!!) his grief, which is precisely what staying fixated on revenge allows him to avoid.
- relatedly: i just.  am SO sick.  of all these horrible people.  getting their hands on sasuke.  and using him for their own ends.  when he has already been manipulated and victimized all his life.  it makes me wanna SCREAM!!!!  and i know that’s the point; we are supposed to be frustrated by this - but - hrnghghgnh
and like - it’s not like sasuke doesn’t know it’s happening!  he’s not stupid!  he knows the people around him are using him, and he just tries to use them back and play them before they play him, and he accepts that this is what his life is going to look like, and because he survives, he thinks he’s in control, but he has NO IDEA how far over his head he’s in now.  and besides, he never stops to think that maybe his life shouldn’t look like this.  he has no conception of ‘someone should be taking care of me.’  he’s never seen himself as a child who needs protection - he’s never seen himself as a child, period.  it’s why he’s such a brat to the other kids, and it’s why he never calls kakashi ‘sensei.’  he thinks of himself as an adult.  he has adult problems.  he can’t connect to children his own age because he can’t connect to the idea of childhood - his childhood was stolen from him, and with it went any conception of refuge or safety or the fact that relentless self-sufficiency and a constant cycle of using/being used by other people isn’t in fact what his life is supposed to look like.
i am continually infuriated by all of these people who have abdicated their responsibility as adults and chosen to exploit an already exploited kid, one who is too messed up to save himself or let anybody else help him.  none of these people care about him.  they all want to use him for something.  they’re happy he’s in pain, because his pain is what enables them to manipulate him.
the people who DO truly want to help him are the same people he’s desperately trying to avoid.  the only adult sasuke ever had a meaningful and non-manipulative relationship with is the same adult he keeps running away from.  and the only two people his own age who ever actually knew anything about him or cared if he was okay are the two people he keeps pushing away.
there is, perhaps, a lot to be said about how sasuke continually runs away from the people who actually care about him and instead affiliates himself with people he’ll never have to worry about forming a connection with.  “having too many ties in this world just holds you back” - sure, and having no ties protects you, too.  nobody to love you, nobody to know you, nobody you can ever lose.
