FS Stars thrash AmaZulu at Goble Park
FS Stars thrash AmaZulu at Goble Park
Free State Stars greatly eased their relegation worries as they thrashed AmaZulu 4-1 in Saturday’s Premiership clash at Goble Park.
The hosts raced into an early lead as Martin Kizza fired on goal following a chaotic goalmouth scramble, and his strike went beneath the legs of goalkeeper Siyabonga Mbatha.
It was nearly 2-0 in the 20th minute when good work from Sinethemba Jantjie saw Mpho…

Baxter: Bruce was in our system

Baxter: Bruce was in our system
Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter has given his reasons for picking Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma in his latest squad.
Baxter announced his squad to face Libya in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Sfax, Tunisia on March 24, including Bvuma as a third choice shot-stopper. Bidvest Wits goalkeeper Darren Keet and SuperSport United’s Ronwen Williams will battle it out for the number one spot.
Bvuma has played just two matches in all competitions for Amakhosi in 2019, doing very well over the weekend in a 1-0 victory over Maritzburg United. The 23-year-old started ahead of Daniel Akpeyi and did enough to keep a clean sheet
Bvuma has previously played for the senior national team during the 2018 COSAFA Cup in Polokwane.
Many felt that AmaZulu goalkeeper Siyabonga Mbatha deserved a call-up, while Wayne Sandilands has been doing well for Orlando Pirates and could have easily been included too.
“This selection of the camp has probably been the most difficult I’ve ever had and the goalkeepers has been one that we’ve thrown around in every direction. The third goalkeeper in the camp has a specific role and that specific role is to be there and be available and be able to jump in if he’s needed.
“Probably he won’t be competing for one of those starting two places, so this is a third goalkeeper that we don’t want to experiment with, but we want to gain as much as we can, both for the development of the game and the player.
“I’ve considered from every angle. Bruce was in our system, he came with us to COSAFA, was thrown in the deep end against Botswana and did fantastically well. In his club he has also been pushed in, in a situation that has not been easy for him and, again, he looked rock solid. Myself, Molefi [Ntseki] and Alex [Heredia] watched him at the weekend.”

Baxter says it’s not always about bringing in players who are on-form when selecting the national team.

Orlando Pirates’ Ben wins Ford Goal of the Month award
Orlando Pirates’ Ben wins Ford Goal of the Month award
It was the 84th minute at Orlando Stadium, and the Buccaneers were at their marauding best. The victims were AmaZulu, who had the misfortune of jolting the home side into action after taking the lead inside 20 minutes.
Sitting three goals to the good, the Soweto Giants put on a show for their supporters as they put the glossy veneer to a polished attacking display by burying the fourth nail in…

Starting XIs: Highlands v AmaZulu

Starting XIs: Highlands v AmaZulu
AmaZulu returned to winning ways with a 2-1 triumph over Highlands Park in the Absa Premiership on Tuesday evening at Makhulong Stadium.
The Lions of the North were not letting Usuthu settle into their passing rhythm in the opening ten minutes, dishing out harsh tackles at the back and making their intentions known early on.
Lindokuhle Mbatha had a great chance to give Owen Da Gama’s charges the lead in the 15th minute after going through one-on-one with Siyabonga Mbatha but the shot-stopper pulled off a good save to keep the score level.
Usuthu started to find joy going forward after half-an-hour but they were yet to get open opportunities, while Highlands were absorbing the pressure and looking to catch the visitors on counter-attacks.
Substitute Siyabonga Nomvethe broke the deadlock for Johnson’s men six minutes after the break with a clinical close range finish, 0-1.
Mbatha quickly levelled matters for the hosts a minute before the hour as Usuthu lost their concentration, 1-1.
Emiliano Tade restored the lead for Usuthu 20 minutes before time with a simple finish after he was setup by Bonginkosi Ntuli who rounded the defence to set up his strike partner.
With five minutes to go, Botholezwe Ncube almost made it 3-1 for Johnson’s men with a shot inside the box having space but Highlands goalkeeper Marlon Heugh made a good save.

Nevertheless, 2-1 was how the encounter ended as AmaZulu get their campaign back on track.
