Warrior Goalie makes 107 saves
by: Kirk Allen - Warrior Hockey Goalie Instruction Specialist
Tumblr media
Colton Point of North Bay, ON did the unthinkable in a recent game stopping 107 of the 109 shots he faced.  The game was an unorthodox one between the North Bay Trappers and the Sault Ste. Marie Thunderbirds including an overtime goal for the Thunderbirds that was later called off (High Stick) and the game continued on.  Colton had already entered the locker room thinking the game was over and came back to the ice rejuvenated amongst his teammates to go on to win the game in the third overtime.  It was a remarkable performance by the Erie Otters 2014 OHL Draft Pick that may never be replicated or beaten. We had the chance to interview Colton and asked him a few questions about the game.
Tumblr media
Q: Describe the game from an emotional standpoint.  Were you always confident you’d make the next save knowing the save total was piling closer and closer to triple digits?
A: Nearing the end of the game to keep myself going the only thing I thought about was the next save.  You reach a certain point when you are tired that makes it impossible to think about multiple things and I knew I had a job to do. Not once in that entire game did I think to myself "Wow what if they beat me.” It felt like the more shots I faced the more comfortable I was. Oddly enough the shot total never really seemed that high, I was thinking high 70's but not 109.
Tumblr media
Q: What did you do to stay focused throughout the game?  Was any of it different from what you’d do in a “normal” game?
A: My goalie coach, Kyle Aubut, and I do this thing where we talk about the most random subjects we can think about. We do this to keep my mind off of the game during intermissions so I can commit my focus to when the game is on. Obviously, like all goalies I have some superstitions like my not re-taping my stick and only drinking out of one water bottle. I wouldn't say I prepared any differently than a normal game and my focus was there from the start.
Tumblr media
Q: Describe the goal that was called off in overtime.  What were your emotions like thinking the game was over to actually going back out on the ice and continuing the game?  How did your team respond?
A: I remember looking behind me and seeing the puck in the net and it never occurred to me that it could have been a high stick. I'm not really the goalie to cause a scene when I lose so I just got up and skated off. About 30 seconds later our captain came rushing into the room jumping and yelling "Pointer they called the goal off!"  I just felt so rejuvenated, and at that very moment I knew we were gonna win it.  I could feel the momentum change. When I stepped back on the ice everyone was yelling and it was crazy.
Q: What was the best “Shoutout” that you received after the game from all of the media coverage?
A: The best shoutout after my game has to be from Chris Dawson and the BayToday staff, they published two separate articles in less than a day about me. They talked about how what I achieved was historical and it was nothing but praise.  They even got Kenny Appleby, who is also a North Bay native, to share his feelings on the game and he said, "I've skated with Colton before and seen his work so I know it's something he's definitely capable of." I've always looked up to Ken and to see him say that about me is a great feeling.
Q: Knowing that the Erie Otters of the OHL drafted you, what are your career aspirations in hockey? OHL? NCAA? NHL?
A: I'm really striving towards playing for Erie next year and I have made that pretty clear. Obviously I'm gonna have to work for it and I have no problem putting my nose to the grindstone. But if the OHL doesn't work out I would definitely consider NCAA because I keep my marks pretty high. Eventually it is my goal to play in the NHL, but if that doesn't work I would love to play some years in Europe.
Tumblr media
Q: What advice would you tell young goalies who may find themselves in similar situations one day that could help them persevere through such a physically and emotionally demanding game?
A: Don't let one bad situation define you, hockey is great because you have a chance to redeem yourself every play. And most importantly have some fun, that's why we play this game, because we love it.
Q: What are some of the things that you like about your Ritual G2 Glove, Blocker & Leg Pads?
A: The Ritual G2 setup I'm wearing right now is honestly the nicest gear I have ever worn. The leg pads are incredibly light and they seal the ice very quickly. Right now I have the strapping setup with laces through the skate that are gapped out about 4 inches to let my skate fall straight to the ice. Then both Calf Velcro and the Knee Velcro strapped to the Calf. It's amazing how versatile the strapping can be with these pads. The rounded toe makes it so the toe of the pad never gets worn out which means no repairs. The G2 glove was a charm to break in.  Took me about a day. The removable Palm is also very nice because you can just take it out and wash them so they never smell bad. I've never had a stinger in 4 months of use almost daily. The blocker gives very good stick control and the face is fairly low on the hand which helps with those tricky low blocker shots.
Q: Seeing that your previous set of gear were Rituals (First Generation), what is it about Warrior Goalie that grabs you and makes you feel comfortable with the gear?  What are the advantages that you see in it compared to other gear on the market?
A: I have worn pretty much every major company's gear and Warrior was the first time I actually bought a second set. Back when the first Rituals came out I was going to get a custom set but was talked out of it and got another brand.  When it was time for a new setup I found a set of Rituals that were my size and jumped on them. It took maybe 20 minutes for me to get used to them.  That's the great part about the Warrior gear, there is no learning curve. Compared to the other gear on the market Warrior is the clear leader to me. Three different graphics and lots of color schemes. Adjustable beyond belief, you shouldn't have to change your play for your pads they should work with you. They are durable; in the two years I've worn Rituals, the gear has held up better than any other gear I have worn.
Click below for video from the incredible 107 shot game.  Video picks up in the third OT period.  Colton still looks fresh!
