I don’t hang out in queer Chinese spaces much because I’m Thai-Chinese and we’ve got our own spaces (watch gap: the series. god i love being thai-chinese).

But Chinese lesbians have talked about this at length before, specifically many Chinese lesbians don’t use the same social media to engage in queer community as straight Chinese folks, and that’s specifically because of rampant misogyny and lesbophobia in China. There are specific places and spaces for queer Chinese people that are intentionally gatekept to keep the community safe. Like the misogyny and homophobia aimed towards queer Chinese women and femmes is incredibly rampant.

But white queer westerners wanting entry to, and public information about these places, and for them to be public would put these communities at risk. Just because you share some part of your identity, does not mean you’re in community with these people, and acting as if you’re owed community with them, that you’re owed knowledge about their spaces, speaks to a lot of white queer westerners sense of entitlement to get to talk about groups you’re not apart of. Just because you’re queer doesn’t mean you know what it’s like to be queer and Chinese, and the culture you’re apart of and country you’re from determines a lot about your interactions with queer community.

If I see one more naive white queer speaking over actual Chinese queers people and proclaiming xiaohongshu/rednote or even China in general is somehow a fucking wonderland incapable of violent bigotry I’m gonna explode

1) a lot of the queer related tags have suddenly become usable again after the great migration

2) the #le tag for lesbians literally comes from the #lesbian and #les tags being banned so to act

3) the welcome you’re receiving by chinese people isn’t what actual Chinese queers have experienced (we experience a bombardment of loud angry homophobes/transphobes every single fucking day) and every single Chinese queer I know has been ranting about this for days. Unfortunately a lot of people are hypocrites who are only nice to the guests in the house

4) not only is this rhetoric of don’t ask don’t tell being the main consensus in China FALSE (I don’t even want to get into the media’s suppression of hate crimes and how many queer activism accounts are being banned left and right), passive queerphobia is still FUCKING QUEERPHOBIA…

My Best Friend Comes Back

A Gay Weight Gain Story

I checked my reflection.

I didn’t really like what I saw. Sure, my face was handsome and my outfit looked good, but my recent weight gain was more noticeable than I thought. Despite being pretty loose, my XL shirt still couldn’t hide my new love handles.

I wasn’t obese or anything (5’10” and 188 pounds) but because my weight had accumulated so much on my waist (and because I didn’t have the broadest shoulders), I looked terrible. Worse, I looked curvy. Like a woman. I knew that Mason was going to give me shit about it.

I mean, I was excited to see him again. He was my best friend and it had been three long years since we’d actually seen each other in person. We Zoomed every once in a while, but he hadn’t seen all of me since he moved to Thailand. Back then, I was 145 pounds. The skinny friend in comparison to Mason’s shorter, more muscly body. He always joked about my “chicken legs,” about how a strong wind would blow me away. I could only imagine what he’d say now that I’d gotten chubby.

He hadn't noticed anything during our Zoom sessions. (I was good at angling my face to hide my new double chin.) I also didn’t use social media, so no clues there, either.

My guess was that he’d show up at my doorstep, take one look at my thicker chest and wide hips, and roast me like a stand-up comedian. His blunt, snarky honesty was the thing I liked about him most, and the thing I absolutely hated when he directed his comments at me.

Still, I wasn’t going to let my nerves derail our visit. I had a good job, a good life. A lot to be proud of. (Minus a boyfriend, sadly. My singlehood was a big contributor to my weight gain.)

I adjusted my shirt one more time and walked into the living room to prepare some welcome snacks. Chips and soda, nothing fancy. I figured we’d hang out here and catch up on the last three years. I’m sure he had some wild stories from Thailand that he still hadn’t told me. Knowing him, he probably went clubbing with the king or something.

The doorbell rang, and I jumped up to answer. I felt weirdly nervous.

“Open up!” Mason called from the other side. “This is the police.” He hadn’t changed at all.

Then I opened the door and realized that I was dead wrong. Mason was twice the man he used to be. Literally.

He had to be at least 350 pounds. He’d become almost spherical, with a round drooping stomach stuffed inside an ill-fitting shirt (with vertical stripes!). His arms and legs had developed the kind of rolls that you’d see on an infant. Standing just 5’7”, he looked like a fleshy, lumpy snowman.

He smiled at my shocked reaction before waddling in. Rather than give me a hug, he reached out and shook my slight moob. “Dude, you got bitch tits.”

I was speechless.

He walked past me and flopped onto the couch. It creaked under him. He immediately grabbed a handful of chips and crammed them into his mouth. “So. When were you gonna tell me that you got fat?”

“I… What?”

He shoved in another handful of chips. “Pop a squat, man. It must be hard for a guy your size to stay standing for so long.” He laughed.

I sat next to him, feeling heat radiating off his obese body. I looked him up and down. This had to be a joke, right? He was wearing a fat suit. The Mason I knew was an absolute gym nut. He’d never lose control of his own body like this.

Besides, his face was still the same. Slightly rounder cheeks, but not by much. His whole head didn’t match with his body at all.

But the more I looked at him, the more I realized that this was real. He’d turned into a total blob.

“So what’s new?” he asked through another mouthful. “I mean, besides all the buffets you must be hitting.”

“I’m good,” I said, still deeply confused. Did he not know that he looked like this?

“Yeah? Still play basketball?”

“Not for a while,” I said, staring at the faded stretchmarks on the bottom of his gut. (His shirt had ridden up to just below his belly button. “Um, do you?”

He laughed. “What do you think?”

“No?”

He threw his chubby arms into the air. “Jesus, man. You’re hopeless! Just say it, okay?”

“Say what?”

He looked at me like I was the world’s dumbest human. “Jason. Do you notice anything different about me?”

“You’re fat.”

“Seriously, man? That’s all you’re gonna say? I’m fat?”

“Well, you are.”

“I ain’t fat, Jace. My BMI is 56.4. I’ve reached ‘class three obesity.’ That’s a bit more than fat. God, you’re still so awkward.”

“And you, um… I mean…” I paused. “What happened?”

“I became the man I’ve always wanted to be. Why else do you think I up and moved to Thailand?”

“For work?”

He reached for the chips again, but his belly was weighing him down. He flopped backward, causing ripples through his stomach and making his moobs audibly thump against him.  “A little help, man?”

I took the bowl and placed it between us.

He rolled his eyes and repositioned it on his belly. Easier access. “Got any dip, man? I haven’t eaten in an hour.”

I left the room to see what I had in the fridge. There was a family-sized tub of sour cream dip, so I brought that back in.

He snatched it out of my hands and dumped the whole thing onto the chips. Then he scooped into it with both hands and fed himself. Left hand, right hand. He was trying to be messy. “Yeah, I went there for my job. Which was great, by the way. But mostly, I wanted to get away from everybody I used to know and allow myself to grow without all the judgment.” He paused to swallow. “You’re not judging me, are you?”

“No! I’m totally… You’re…”

“Just kidding, man. I knew you’d be cool with it.”

“So you made yourself fat on purpose?”

“Class three obese, my friend. And yup, sure did. What do you think?”

If I got past my total shock, I had to admit that he looked pretty hot. I couldn’t believe I was thinking that. I’d never once been attracted to bigger guys before. The ones in my life had always been so self-conscious. Always wearing inconspicuous clothes, rarely smiling, positioning their arms to awkwardly and futilely hide their stomachs. You could tell from how they moved that they hated their bodies.

Mason, on the other hand, chose this body. He flaunted it. His clothes were tight for a reason. He moved with such confidence and pride that I couldn’t help but see the beauty in his fat.

I didn’t tell him that, though. Instead, I said, “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I hoped you would notice. Every time we talked on Zoom, I expected you to say something. But no, you were too busy looking at your own image, trying to deemphasize your new double-chin. Very cute, by the way.”

“But you never mentioned…”

“Overeating? Force-feeding sessions? Stopping all exercise? Nope. I did not. But I can tell you about all that now. If you’re interested.”

I was interested, but I was still too afraid to say anything.

He ate more of the chips and dip by the handful, moaning in pleasure. I couldn’t pull my eyes away. “These are so good, man.”

“But you were always so… athletic before.”

“I know, right? It sucked. I couldn’t grow how I wanted, so I grew muscle instead. It was more ‘acceptable’.” He made air quotes for that last part, sending splatters of dip into the air.

“But you seemed so confident.”

“Dude, I’m always confident. I mean, how can I not be? I’m awesome.” He ate some more. “But you seriously never wondered why I always joked about how skinny you were? Why I made all those comments?”

I shrugged. “Want some soda?” I had Coke and Sprite on the table, but I knew he'd have trouble reaching it.

“Got any soda that isn’t diet?”

“No.”

“Shoot. How about ice cream?”

“Uh, yeah. Some vanilla.”

“Cool. Just melt that down and pour it into a cup, please. Thanks.” He acted like that was a normal request.

“Sure.”

As I was microwaving the carton of ice cream, I took a long moment to sort through my thoughts. Mason had changed himself forever, but he was still the loud, awesome guy that I’ve always known. He was happy.

And he was beautiful. That was probably the most surprising part of this whole thing. When he was fit and hot, I had zero romantic feelings for him. But now…

The ice cream was properly melted. I assumed he was going to drink the whole thing, and I didn’t have any cups big enough, so I just brought the carton back into the living room.

“Low fat?” he said disappointedly after reading the label. “Whatever. Every little bit helps, right?”

The chip and dip bowl was empty now. He’d placed it back on the couch. His hands were covered in dip, though. I should’ve brought a towel.

Except… I think he liked making a mess.

And I was fine with that. I’d clean my couch later.

He grabbed the container and immediately started chugging. A trickle of cream oozed down the edge of his mouth and formed a rivulet across his left tit.

“Since you’ve been back,” I asked, “have you seen anyone else?”

He stopped chugging. “Yeah. My family absolutely freaked. They think I have some thyroid disease or something. Which… maybe I do. My doctor in Chiang Mai has put me on a ton of different medications. I can’t keep track anymore. But yeah, they’re not happy. But I haven’t seen anyone else. Just them and you. And the fine folks at McDonalds, Wendys, Panda Express, and, um, that buffet place.”

His frankness helped me push past my own awkwardness. It was getting easier to ask him questions now. “And what did your parents think when they saw you eat?”

Mason came from a rich family, so their house was fancy and spotless. I couldn’t imagine how they’d react to their son dripping dip and ice cream onto their designer furniture.

He pulled the ice cream away from his mouth and looked me dead in the eyes. “I’d never eat like this in front of them. Just you.” His tone was strangely serious.

“And why am I so special?”

“Because you like it, too.” He grabbed my wrist with his food-stained hand. He gently placed my hand on the top of his belly. “Maybe I’m wrong, Jace, but I always felt that we were, like, kindred spirits or something. Best friends, of course. But also, I don’t know… on the same wavelength. One of the reasons I came back when I did was because I saw your face chunking out and I saw how self-conscious you were about it. I knew I had to finally show you what I was doing to myself to see if you’d finally, like, come to your senses.”

I was speechless. Again.

“Feel it,” he said.

I squeezed into his belly, kneading the soft flesh. My fingers sank in deeper than I’d expected. I’m sure he had a ton of food packed inside, but that did nothing to affect the softness. He felt like the world’s most comfortable pillow.

He was right. We were on the same wavelength.

I took a moment to trace my fingers along his stretchmarks and feel the depth of his belly button. I should’ve never been ashamed of my own weight gain. I should’ve appreciated it, savored it.

“Am I right or am I right?” he asked, all confidence.

To answer the question, I took the ice cream container away from him and brought it to my lips. I drank every last drop, loving the sudden sense of fullness.

Mason had taught me so much, and I knew he was going to teach me so much more.

"In short: Thailand's Senate has approved a bill legalising same sex marriage in the South-East Asian country.

It will afford same-sex couples practical benefits such as being able to have children through IVF and make emergency medical decisions for their spouse.

What's next? The first weddings may take place later this year, 120 days after the law is announced in the Royal Gazette.

Thailand has become the first nation in South-East Asia to legalise same sex marriage, with the country's Senate approving the landmark bill this afternoon.

The legislation was expected to pass after it cleared the country's House of Representatives in a near-unanimous vote in March.

Despite Thailand's bustling gay bars and prominent transgender community making it a mecca for LGBTQ+ tourists, until now local same-sex couples there have been unable to marry.

The law will take effect 120 days after its announcement in the Royal Gazette, so the first same sex weddings may take place later this year.

Couples who have been waiting years have hailed the move as a historic moment that will afford them rights only reserved for spouses.

A Lifechanging Law

Now they will be able to change that, and Anticha Sangchai is elated.

"It is a historical moment and I really want to join with my community to celebrate this moment.

"I want to send a message to the world that Thailand has changed. Even though there are still many issues, this is a big step for us." ...

There were an estimated 3.7 million LGBT people in Thailand in 2022, according to LGBT Capital, a private company which models economic data pertaining to the community around the world.

For the young couple from Bangkok, being able to marry also has very real practical implications.

If they want to have children through IVF, Ms Sangchai says they will need a marriage certificate first.

"I am quite concerned about the time because we are getting older every day, and the older you get the more difficult it is to have a healthy pregnancy," she said.

"So we've been really wanting this law to pass as soon as possible."

Cabaret performer Jena is excited Thailand's laws are finally catching up with the nation's image...

She too had worried about the practical implications of being unable to marry.

"For example, if myself or my partner had to go to hospital or there was an accident that needs consent for an emergency operation, without a marriage certificate we couldn't sign it," she said.

She now wants the government to move forward with a law to allow transgender people to amend their gender on official documents." ...

An Economic Boost?

Thailand has long been famous for LGBTQ tourism and there are now hopes this new law could allow the country to cash in on the aging members of the community.

Chaiwat Songsiriphan, who runs a health clinic for people in the LGBTQ community, said laws preventing same sex marriage were the last barrier holding the country back from becoming a gay retirement hub.

[Note: They do not just mean for rich westerners; Thailand as a gay retirement hub would probably appeal most to and definitely benefit LGBTQ people from throughout Asia.]

"Thailand has an LGBTQ-friendly environment since Thai culture is quite flexible," he said.

"One of my foreigner friends, a gay friend, told me that when he's in his country he has to pretend to be straight … but when he comes to Bangkok he said you can be as gay as you want.

"When we talk about retirement or a long-term stay for the rest of their lives, what people need is … food, good healthcare services, transportation, homes.

"I think Thailand has it all at a very affordable price."

He said it could help give the country a desperately needed economic boost.

"This will have a lot of benefits for Thailand's economy because when we talk about retirement it's people literally bringing all the money they have earned for the rest of their working lives to spend and invest here," he said.

He said he, like the rest of the community, was thrilled by the news.

"It's not about a privilege, it's just equality," he said.

"We are we also humans, so we should be able to marry the one we love.""

This isnt directed at anything specific, just want to do my best to help out the many people fleeing countries to seek aid in thailand as someone who both grew up here/speaks the language Id like to provide some specific experiences that help foreigners adjust.

First its extremely likely if someone moves to the south east that has been living in the northern hemisphere you will struggle most with the heat and humidity. White People Especially. All of you need to be drinking extra water everyday, this is not a joke heat stroke is very common for white people here because they dont realize how dehydrated they are until its already causing harm. Please stay safe.

If the summers start getting too hot take day trips to mountain towns/businesses there's a lot of local industry around people going to cooler weather at higher elevations during the hottest times of year.

Addition for health, Please get vaccinated Before coming here. We all trust all foreigners/tourists do (and since covid screenings in airports are much more common) Especially for mosquito transmissible diseases.

Thailand uses yearly field burning for crop rotation, this causes periods of the year with extreme air pollution/smog. cities will put out air warnings in advance so people can either seal their homes to prevent air from getting in unfiltered or wear smoke masks. I recommend people do this asap before its a necessity.

Language wise thailand has a large enough tourism base that most people also learn at least some english/there's businesses that teach foreigners thai. Learning before traveling is appreciated, the main thing to keep in mind is that since thai is a tonal language without tone control words can get mixed up/confused. (this is pretty normal for new speakers tho)

If people want to learn thai i highly recommend watching news broadcasts! you get to see a wide variety of speakers and use in conversations. Searching "ข่าว PP" or "ข่าว TNN" on youtube will get you fairly official political broadcasts, but even if you just search ข่าว or ข่าวดึก can bring up a lot of good examples of people speaking.

If youre an english speaker one of the best jobs you can look for is as an english teacher or tutor. It's a very searched for job and usually provides good opportunity for learning the language as well.

If youre in a big city look up the local train routes and use those, as finding parking/driving places will generally be much worse than just using the trains. That being said getting a motor bike is fairly easy and inexpensive for commutes if needed.

This is a disappointing but necessary heads up for foreigners, colorism is still a fairly wide spread issue in thailand. People arent violent but things like finding work/some aid does have discriminatory practices still and its extremely disappointing. There are local movements and people fighting to end it, but its been ingrained in a lot of people.

speaking of local communities if anyone who's coming to thailand is coming for hrt/trans support i highly recommend getting into contact with the local trans fem communities/gay centers. There's massive international culture and groups of people that will help you both get what you need and with support.

I know i said a lot here but i am genuinely really happy my home can provide safety and aid to people in hard times. I know from a lot of personal experience how scary it is when you have to flee your home, and if there's anything i can do to help ease that process even with limited resources i will do my best.

Ongoing Series - Thai

Perfect 10 Liners (Sun YT) ep 20 of 24 - Santa is really good at comedy, I gotta say. Wine is so cute 'cause he's so frank and earnest. It's adorable! (Inquiring minds would like to know if people in Thailand put perfume on their cheeks?) Lots of linguistic negotiation of pronouns in this episode so that made me really happy.

The Boy Next World (Sun IQIYI) ep 10 end - OMG they made them act and SING at the same time. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. (Raise your proverbial hand if you could actually hear me writhing in pain as that scene aired? Because my whole body was cringing so hard I swear I fractured my own cartilage.) I’m sorry but this show was doing really well for a Mame but that singing was sphincter-shrinking bad. And seemingly endless…

Okay the second half: The running of the gays, how very Japanese of you. So about 1/2 of the final ep was utterly unbearable, but the rest was fine.

Let's talk?

This show had an excellent premise about two fated mates, Cir & Phu, destined to be lovers in multiple parallel worlds. It is the curse of A Cir Who Knows Better to ensure that they manage to always end up together. This effectively explained all Cir’s weird creepy stalker behavior (pièce de résistance of a MAME seme) with the bonafide excuse of that tugging red thread. Turns out I forgive a lot for a strong premise, especially when combined with truly stellar chemistry. *But* there was also some bad chewing of the scenery and really terrible singing at key moments that screwed the landing (yes that too, but). The sex scenes were some of the best we’ve ever had, unfortunately even they weren’t good enough to mitigate that damn singing. 8/10

A solid showing from MAME, I was shocked, there was a point there when I thought this was gonna get a 9/10 from me! 

My Golden Blood (Weds YouTube iQIYI) Ep 1 of 12 - Trailer. GMMTV taking on Weds nights and midweek discourse (they hope) with this hotly anticipated vampire series. Is Thailand finally giving us the trashy gay vampires we richly deserve? Just keep in mind us sh*theads don't deserve much.

And it looks like that's exactly what we are getting.

I'm sorry ya'll: I don't like it. But not in a "witty trash watch" kinda way. So it's going here instead: You ready?

Classic main character = orphan with a mysterious past and bad dreams plus people around are weird about his certain traits. I wonder the thing I always wonder, why not give him martial arts training if he has known enemies? I've done various forms for years and never once cut myself. Of course Joss has a shirtless coming out if a pool intro. I can hear the dev team... "Hear me out now, baywatch just... vampires." I see we have new competition in the Advanced Bravely school of muscled thirst. As it should be. Been a while since we’ve had anyone on the scene who could give Jason Xu a run for his money. Joss is just the man to flex it. Is it just me or does this pair have negative chemistry? Yes we can all tell this is directed GAY! but Joss + Gawin do not seem even the slightest bit gay. The camera on the other (em) hand...

I asked for gay twilight, I’m getting gay twilight. Same lack of chemistry, bad special effects, and everything.

Secret Relationships (Korea iQIYI) ep 3 of 8 - I continue to enjoy this a lot. I like how creepy and sinister pretty much everybody is (except for our puppy hero). Who is dog paddling through the filth of his crush's love triangle of past relationships. I like the fact that in the theater an unofficial pass was made. It was totally adorable. Every one is a mess and it's sustaining all of BL right now.

Checkered Shirt (Korea YT) ep 6 of 8 - Baby boy do not flirt with a closet case! Have you learned nothing?

Fight for Love (Vietnam YT) ep 6 of 8 - didn't drop or I somehow missed it. Caught it! It was lovely, nice kiss, I like where the plot is going although... no singing please.

Exclusive Love (Taiwan Fri Gaga) ep 6 of 12 - Our poor little gay boy is being v tested. And testing himself. Side couple = tiny idiots. In other news, one of them is wearing a shirt I actually own! I feel like peek BL stan. (Also I may shop too much in Taipei.) Does I qualify for the shared BL communal wardrobe?

Last Meal Universe (Thai ????) 8 eps - An alien who has come to destroy earth instead falls in love with Thai food and then the Thai boy who cooks it - realistic, actually. I got a link to watch but it still wouldn't work for me, so I guess I'm waiting to see what happens.

CUTEST little JBL short drop on YT. No idea it's real title. About 2 students secretly dating trying to decide to come out. It's popular guy + nerd! Absolutely not sure how long this will last on YT but adorable and worth 17 minutes of your time. Do it ASAP! I don't want a repeat of everyone asking me for Wimpy Corporate Drone again. There seems to be a pervious installment in the series, but no subs.

3/19? Lost in the Woods (Weds Gaga) Ep 1 of 7 - Announced for 2023, adapted from a novel of the same name. Fifa just graduated high school and travels to a remote province to take care of his grandma, before starting uni. There he meets Chief Hem, a forest ranger.

3/20 Top Form (Thailand Thurs WeTV) 10 eps - Trailer. Adaptation of a Japanese manga starring Boom (Chains of Heart) opposite Smart (Don't Say No). Actor recognized as the "The Sexiest Man of the Year" has his first-place position usurped by newcomer. But while he sees them as rivals, turns out the new kid has other ideas. I'm super excited for this but hate watching on WeTV so gonna be a challenge.

3/21 Sweet Tooth Good Dentist (Thailand Fri GMMTV & iQIYI) 12 eps - Trailer. Finally Mark is leading a BL! This one based on a Jittirain novel about a weird sunshine student dentist and his sugar-addicted patient, described as a romcom meets romantic therapy. Also, Jimmy is there, primarily to give me second lead syndrome. It looks silly but earnest, I'm looking forward to it actually.

3/28 Heesu in Class 2 (Korea Fri ????) 10 eps - Trailer. Adaption of the comic by Lily, about a shy unpopular boy with a secret crush on best friend who somehow also ends up his school's relationship counselor. Supposed to have completed filming in 2022, the fact this has been in dev hell since then somewhat mitigates this being my most anticipated BL of it's original year.
