There was always a weary feeling that settled in the pit of Iolani’s stomach when comeback season was about to kick into gear. While creating was always fun and the closeness she felt with the group around her, she knew stress always followed during this period of time. The long nights, the intensive studio sessions, the long days spent on a music video shoot--it was all stressful in the end, no matter how much the creative process was fun for the younger member.
But this would be different. All nine of them would be a part of this comeback, something Iolani was sure would never happen. The older members would dance, sing and rap along side the maknae line. She wasn’t sure how this would look, but she wasn’t exactly rejecting the idea as a whole.
Either way, she was looking for some fun. Iolani wanted to eat her body weight in noodles and let loose before another wave of stress would settle into her muscles for the foreseeable future. And there was no one better to hit up a gogi restaurant with than her fellow group member, Heeyoung.
“Heeyoung-ah, are you ready yet?” she called out to her best friend from the living room. “If I wait any longer, my stomach will cannibalize itself and I’ll have no energy to walk downstairs.”

✏; @glrminryung
When Yeohyun's muscles started to complain, she shuffled over to the stereo, finally pulling her phone out from the system. It was just before dinner time. Having practiced since lunch, her muscles were strung too taut now for her to continue.
Heaving a sigh, she walked away from the stereo and switched off the lights in the room. Comfortable in the dark room, she grabbed her bag, rummaging through it for her trusty earphone. Plugging in the earphones she felt just slightly guilty about draining her phone like this but all thoughts erased themselves from her mind as the music flowed into her ear softly. Sliding down the wall, she sat with her knees pulled up to her chest.
The music taking over her mind made her smile, her eyes closing to feel the music better. And as she often did when she was in the dark, all alone with herself with sounds other than the music in her ears being an abstract notion, she started singing. It could be Cinnamon's song, Jewel Box's song or Hex's. It never really mattered as long as she was singing and she enjoyed the song. Actually, nothing mattered when she was in her own world like this.

the following schedules are applicable out-of-character for a fortnight, starting from 22.08.17 until 05.09.17. new threads must be initiated within this timespan, while continuation can last for however long it takes. in-character dates are included below, mix and match between schedules within reasonable plots is highly encouraged. please tag your starters and threads with glr: season two. participations might win your characters new schedules for the upcoming agendas!
JEWEL BOX: CONCERT CONCEPTION.
wrapping up their comeback with surreal at the beginning of august, jewel box is currently moving onto new schedules that include the meetings for their next concert. after a huge success with their previous asian tours, they’re currently trying to score a worldwide tour, including those in the continents of europe, australia, and america. they’re also shooting a lot of vcr’s to prepare the concepts of this concert, robbing the attention of their loyal followers, making them wonder what’s being planned behind the curtain.
— 23.08.17 » end of break, first meeting for the concert at the hq. — 28.08.17 » second meeting; the finalizing of the concert scenario. — 02.09.17 » first recording of their vcr, done in the studio.
HEX: RECORDING PREPARATION.
post-concert euphoria has left the fans begging for more, and there’s no rest for a group like hex, with their currently being on the summit of their popularity. with the scandals dying down, the fans who previously planned on leaving the fandom have started accepting hex back, as shown by the increasing number of fancafe members. currently, hex is in reading session for their demos, preparing for their next comeback, scheduled to happen somewhere at the end of this year. the concept is called “the phantom”, which follows the story of phantom of the opera.
— 22.08.17 » end of the concert, encore hold in the stadium. — 30.08.17 » first meeting for the comeback preparation. — 04.09.17 » the beginning of studio recording for the demos.
CHERRY BOMB: DEBUT & FIRST WIN.
in spite of being a very new group, cherry bomb proves that nebula galaxy’s brand plays a huge role in deciding a rookie group’s fate. just within the weeks of their debut, they’ve gained a huge number of followings, with their fanchants prepared for each performance. it’s rumored that nebula has started with producing their merchandise and considering the fanbase name. their first win also causes a huge surprise in the industry, seeing that it’s only a few weeks into their debut. they will be continuing their promotion until the end of august.
— 20.08.17 » first win during inkigayo with their song “target”. — 25.08.17 » the last weekend of recordings for debut stages. — 01.09.17 » a group photoshoot for the w magazine.
ATLAS: BEGINNING OF COMEBACK.
their teasers are released prior to the ending of jewel box’s promotions, marking nebula’s new era of comeback with their mini album and title track “stay”. it’s a song about heartbreak, which causes some speculations amidst fans considering the fact that atlas’ members helped the productions of the songs. their feature for the next week’s comeback in various music shows’ screens is enough to gather cheers from the audience, marking it as another highly anticipated comeback.
— 22.08.17 » all night training sessions with everyone for the comeback. — 24.08.17 » the release of music video for “stay”; 1.8m views in a day. — 25.08.17 » recordings for the comeback stages.
ANTI: COMEBACK PRODUCTION.
a long production, a typical process for anti. they’re recording demos after demos, their weeks filled with having their songs pre-recorded and recorded. some of them have been discarded, back to the drawing board, but they’re relentless. after all, it’s also marking the first comeback in a while, and they want everything polished to perfection. some of their songs, however, are transferred from cherry bomb’s old files, carving mixed feelings in the members. they’ve finally come to a decision on a new title track, however, called “rain sound”.
— 21.08.17 » the airing of anti c’s current drama on kbs. — 22.08.17 » practicing their title track’s choreography for the first time.
HALCYON: OFF-SEASON.
their promotions are also ending soon, and many spoke about how nebula wouldn’t let them coincide with atlas’ comeback much seeing that they’re sometimes targeting similar markets. halcyon’s wrapping up their activities, going to the last of their radio shows, as well as finishing with the recordings for their goodbye stages. after that, they’re going to be on their much deserved break.
— 20.08.17 » attending the first win of cherry bomb during the encore. — 27.08.17 » recordings for goodbye stages come to an end. — 28.08.17 » break begins.
CINNAMON: COMEBACK PRODUCTION.
a surprise for many, even in the company: cinnamon is making a comeback as a full unit instead of rotations. this time, the concept is a mix and match, combining electropop with ballad. they will have two title tracks, only releasing a mini album, and the songs are currently being produced. “하위 down” and “beautiful day” are being recorded side by side, challenging the girls to bring out the quirkier and softer sides of them.
— 24.08.17 » recording in the studio for the full day. — 26.08.17 » first time introduced to the choreo of their title tracks.
ESCAPE: RECORDING POST-PRODUCTION.
it’s been rumored for some time between the fandoms ( which, coincidentally also ignite a lot of fandom wars ) that nebula will sooner or later pitch the big groups against each other. charm and ctrl have heard gossips regarding their comebacks, and according to them, misconceptions part three’s release might be in tandem with hex’s, although it’s nothing mere assumptions. escape is currently in the post-production phase of their recording for part three, preparing for their comeback soon, possibly right after atlas and cinnamon.
— 23.08.17 » post-production listening at the studio. — 04.09.17 » the conception of the music video for their track “power”.
PRISM A: OFF-SEASON.
the last photoshoot sessions for nature republic is coming in the corner, and her filming as a supporting role in the drama “weightlifting fairy kim bokjoo” is currently undergoing. it’s rumored that her role this time was obtained through her own initiative to audition. there’s no sign on comeback soon, although some songs are recorded in the studio to test her compatibility with the genre.
— 21.08.17 » nature republic’s last photoshoots. — 22.08.17 » beginning of the drama production, filling the entire week. — 01.09.17 » recording demos at the studio.
PRISM B: OFF-SEASON.
finishing the last touch ups of the elle photoshoots, the magazine is ready to launch him as the cover story alongside his interview. he’s currently rumored to be taking well-deserved break as well, taking a week off for a vacation before meeting with the board directors to converse about his next comeback’s concepts. the comeback plan is still an embryo, and it’s likely to not happen until end of this year or the beginning of next year.
— 24.08.17 » rumored vacation, apparently recorded for one fine day. — 02.09.17 » first meeting with the board directors for the comeback.

tea time
@glrminryung
Over the last week Intak took to locking himself in the practice rooms, writing and relaxing. He only resurfaced for food and to refill his water bottles and showed up at the dorms late at night. This morning, he considered not going to the studio building. Hanging out at the dorm sounded like a better option than locking himself away and it seemed he wanted some human contact, something he hardly received when locked away writing.
After doing his typical morning routine and changing out of his pajamas, he sighed deeply. The sweat pants and hoodie he donned were all new clothing items but oddly felt roomy and comfy. Content and somewhat more comfortable than he imagined, he shuffled out into the hallway and toward the kitchen. Tea, he wanted tea. And something for breakfast, but he was debating whether he wanted to cook or have something small and woefully insufficient to satisfy his hunger.
Humming along to a Drake song, Intak rounded the corner and into the kitchen, doing a ridiculous impression of Drake’s Hotline Bling dance. It took him a second to locate where all the tea was. Choosing honey and chamomile, he filled the kettle with water and waited for the water to start boiling.
That’s when he looked up and saw a familiar face. Smiling, he gave a single nod. “Hyung, morning,” he said softly. “Tea?”

perceiving leader—
feat. @glrhyewon
yuna, for all her arrogance, cares. she cares about her sister, she cares about her group, and she certainly cares about her image. so it’s no surprise when, drowned by whispering lips calling her stupid, she cares deeply for their leader who knows otherwise.
she considers hyewon one of her closest friends in the group, a brilliant leader who sees through the vain idiot luna to song yuna, a girl haunted to no end by one wrong word eight years ago. yuna can only go so long listening to the media call her stupid, go so long listening to netizens calling her arrogant, that hearing anyone take anything she says in any form of seriousness is like ice cold water in the middle of the desert. and hyewon is her oasis.
“unnie!” yuna calls with a wave, biting her scarlet lip— despite their age difference only being a few weeks, lord knows it’s easy to view their leader as an older sister— “i’m over here!”
she sweeps to hyewon like the sidewalk is her runway. yuna’s been waiting for her outside the nebula hq, willfully ignorant of journalists snapping her photo and writing what is sure to be an article about how impatient she is or getting some new dating scandal stirred up. (”jewel box’s luna caught waiting for a man outside nebula entertainment building?”)
red-soled heels click against the cement as luna comes to face hyewon, height boosted by her stilettos. her expression is excited to see her leader . . . yet with luna’s face hidden by a wide-brimmed, blood-red hat, the stance looks confrontational when she looks down at the other girl. realizing that and hoping not too many pictures were taken, luna quickly loops her arm through hyewon’s and guides her into the building, chattering animatedly.
“aren’t you excited, unnie? i can’t believe we might be getting a world tour . . . i really hope we manage to get it! we’d blow everyone else out of the water if we could land it in america, like new york or something . . . let’s do well in this meeting, hm?”
#glrhyewon#&. thr ( perceiving leader ).#glr: season two#i hope this is alright ahh !!#i went with the route that hyewon knows yuna's not an idiot yakn#*yakno#and that they're doing the meeting for the concert

In Pursuit of Fearlessness
I have started this post a handful of times and then stopped. I guess the biggest reason why is because, oddly, it seems too personal (strange, coming from the girl who has blogged about nearly everything personal over the past two years…)
But, I can walk away from the computer or close a screen (defiantly clicking, “yes, I want to leave this screen”) but I can’t keep the blog from being written in my head. The topic I’m balking at isn’t anything sordid or juicy…in reality it is probably, frankly, much bigger in my head than it is in real life.
I recently visited my energy therapist (woo woo alert ahead) to undo some of the wedding stress. Inevitably, she always brings up my running, despite not knowing a thing about competitive racing. Out of nowhere, she says I won’t see significant improvements until I let go of all my fear. She said that while I can use my mental game techniques to overcome fears and anxieties, I won’t truly be my best until I reach a point where I don’t even need them.
Woah.
My first instinct: defensiveness. She said something that made me feel embarrassed and vulnerable. I pride myself on being a fearless badass. In fact, today is the two year anniversary of my blog, which means today is also the two year anniversary of my big leap of fearless faith. That has to count for something, right?
But, when people say things that make us uncomfortable in an introspective way, there is usually a reason. While I do believe I am the most fearless version of myself that I have ever been in my 17 years (soon to be 18 years on August 1st!) of competitive running, I am not perfect.
I think I touched on this a little bit in my last post. For instance, the first race of the season is especially scary to me. The indisputable truth of exactly where your fitness is at is anxiety-inducing. Failure – however you define it – can be scary. Sometimes when I find myself being fearful before a race, I start to make excuses long before the race has even begun, or comprise exactly what I will say about it if it doesn’t go according to plan. And I hate myself for doing that. One thing that has helped me has been to “rewrite the story” and change the ending to something positive. Still, I want to be at a point where I don’t even have to call upon these workarounds.
Lately I have been setting an intention each month for myself, and July was to have no fear. I marked off two pages in my journal and each day I list something I have done (either that day or in the past) that was fearless. In my head, I have to wonder: what if I can shed even 1% or 2% of fear? What if that change led to a 10% gain in performance if I never again thought, “what if I lose?” “what if I’m not as fit as I think I should be?” “what if I disappoint myself?”
The entire week leading up to my race last Saturday (the USATF IN 5k championships), I couldn’t shake a lot of the what ifs. The funny thing – and definitely the part that that makes me mad at myself – is the fear is entirely internal. I have zero fear that if I have a bad race it will affect sponsorship, or that my internet supporters will judge me, or that I will never be able to bounce back. The biggest fear that I have is that I will have to deal with the disappointment that I will inevitably feel if I run slower than I think I *should*.
The morning of the race I didn’t want to be there. Well, I did, I was just in that weird runner limbo where you want the race to be over and to be feeling happy about a positive effort, but if the heavens opened and a pop up thunderstorm appeared you wouldn’t be too unhappy, either….
When I arrived, I recognized some familiar faces – including a friend of mine, Sarah. This was good and bad. My first thought: here is my out – assuming she is in shape, I don’t have a chance at winning this one because we are not evenly matched at the 5k (Sarah is a professional steepler coming off of a great track season), and now I don’t have to struggle with any disappointment if I fail. Guys, that’s a really stupid fucking thought. I went through my warm up feeling like this and then, about 15 minutes before the race, I remembered my intention for the month: be fearless.
When I first saw Sarah I decided my game plan would be to run my race and not worry about her if she took off hard. This was a way out. I could go with the excuse that I was just running my race.
Then, after I decided to be fearless, I decided that I was there to try and run as fast as possible, no matter who showed up that day. So, I decided I would take the race out as fast as I could. When a marathoner races a track person, you have to rely on stamina. Go out hard, hope you run the other person’s legs off.
I essentially went out as hard as I could, given my current fitness level (just coming off of 2 months of base building, running one fartlek a week and doing strides). I led us through ~2.5k before she made a huge move and put 40 seconds on me. I didn’t start my watch so I don’t know exactly what our mile split was, I do know that I went through 3k in 9:57 because someone was reading splits there. After Sarah dropped me, I focused on continuing to push. I went through 4k in 13:30 and finished in 17:04 to Sarah’s 16:23 (huge congrats to her- she said afterwards that was a road PR).
So, the thing I was afraid of all week wound up happening: I didn’t win. I didn’t get the $500 check that would have gone pretty far in paying our wedding bills. But, in the process, I ran my 2nd fastest 5k ever, which was by far my fastest season opener ever….and I’m not sure I have ever raced 5 months out from a goal race. Last year I did this race and ran 17:40 and was devastated; but, at the same time, 17:40 was also only a few seconds off of my then-PR, so I was just looking at that race with the wrong perspective.
This pic is from last year’s race. Compared to the picture from this year, I can see on my face that I am running from a different place, mentally.
At the end of the day, perspective is so important. There is something that I like to do towards the beginning of every training cycle, and that is to run a relay. Most years, that relay is Great Lakes Relay – a 3 day, 300 mile relay in northern Michigan that is as much navigation and strategy as it is speed.
The year we won - probably not coincidentally also the year we had a full team!
A couple years ago I did Red Eye Relay, which is an overnight, 110 mile relay in Bloomington.
This year, I am running the 8 hour Dream Endurance Relay with one of my bridesmaids and a volee teammate. The relay takes place from noon – 8 PM and we each plan to run just under 3 hours. The forecast looks like it is going to be in the 90s and humid.
I would argue that these relays are one of the most important things that I do in my training each year. For one, they build fearlessness. I have no worries about running in the heat for that long, because I have already experienced that in each relay I have participated in. Two, relays embody everything that is good about the sport: perseverance, accomplishment, teamwork, and the satisfaction of utter exhaustion. When running takes a step from hobby to kinda-trying-to-make-a-living-doing-this, relays are a really refreshing way to remember why you got started with this sport in the first place.
They’re also hard AF. Day 3 of Great Lakes Relay makes your legs feel unlike anything you have ever experienced. The day before my first marathon, I remember thinking that I had survived GLR three times, so a marathon was going to be far easier in comparison.
At this level of training and competing, I’m always amazed at how many slight changes can be made in search of incremental gains. I could run 110 miles per week instead of 100, and see improvement so long as I don’t break my body. Better attention to fueling and recovery makes a difference, as does working with a mental game coach and a massage therapist.
But, at the end of the day, how much does it matter if you still have fears that hold you back? This year is going to be the year of shedding any remaining fears that I have, and I’m happy that I seem to be off to a good start.

2016: The Year in Review
by David
What a MISERABLE year! What a God forsaken year, both politically and personally. And 2017 doesn’t look any better, at least in terms of public life, and likely a lot worse. I barely want to discuss it. Why add my thoughts to the many words already expended on this public farce? We’ve been in touch with some of life’s truisms: that we don’t always get what we want no matter how much we want it, that the world is not fair or even reasonable, and that life ends. But this year of public and private tragedy has been mitigated foremost by my family and friends, and, secondarily by the loving and healing world of pop culture. It’s times like these when we need our cultural lives, and the implied communities those interests provide us.
But this has also been the year when the time/space continuum imploded for me, pop culturally speaking. I mean that my consumption of the stuff I write about became largely unmoored by any sense of temporality. I watched and listened and read stuff with little sense of when it was produced. One can, of course, do that now with streaming. It is a funny way to consume pop culture given that the essence of pop culture is its nowness and its symbiotic relationship to the present. I know, however, that given the collapse of time/space I (and, I assume, everyone) am in an eternal, solipsistic and existential now. We all create our own pop universes and live in our own independent popular culture. I know that because I still don’t believe that Donald Trump is President. That fact shocks me every morning when I read the news. We create our own communities virtual or actual, listen to our own facts and have difficulty comprehending a world unlike our own. Where is that former standard arbiter of popular taste – the water cooler moment – when we work from home or drink bottled water at our own cubicles. I was at a gathering recently, talking about TV and no one else knew the shows others were presenting as their own personal current faves.
D. Trump/A. Baboon
Anyway, sometimes life sucks, but much of the time it doesn’t. So in this new, strange, fragmented world I want to present what was culturally significant to me in 2016.
D. Trump/A. Baldwin
Given the rent in the time-space continuum, the first item of business has got to be the movies I missed in 2015 but caught up with in 2016, and thought noteworthy.
Sicario – beautifully directed, slick and tense, morally ambiguous, with some character and plot inconsistencies. 45 Years – the best of this lot, a luminous and quiet film about relationships. Though notice went to Charlotte Ramplings’ vibrant performance, I was bowled over by Tom Courtney’s vulnerable and transparent acting. A great film.
45 Years
Me and Earl and the Dying Girl – better than you think. Diary of a Teenage Girl – more disturbing than you think. Brooklyn – subtle and sweet. I saw this in the same weekend as the Revenant and my head nearly exploded negotiating the extreme chick/dude movie dichotomy. The Martian – Golden Globe for best comedy???? Huh? It was, however, fun to watch. Straight Outta Compton – certainly not on the level of the best films, but enlightening and energetic. The Revanent – beautiful, long and gruesome. What was the point, again? Room – creates its own world like it’s supposed to. Bridge of Spies – It’s not the time for my Spielberg discussion, but FINE, and I mean that as a compliment here. Carol – so that’s what the 50s were about.
The most culturally significant addition to my social media arsenal: Instagram (i.e. the only addition to my social media arsenal): When I wrote poetry I would apprehend my world through snippets of language I gathered in my head. Now I see the world through discrete visual stimuli, and I have a community to share them with. A whole new reality, and another way that my caring daughter has shepherded me into this brave new world.
Best Concert: Ghost Light Radio Show at The Big Chill Cantina in Rehoboth. Sometimes the best band in the world is your neighbor’s cover band playing for a crowd at an open air beach bar on a beautiful summer night: “Maggie May”, “Copperhead Road”, “Interstate Love Song”, “What I Like About You”, “Thinkin’ Out Loud” and tons more songs that sound great with beer.
GLRS
TV: Glittering Prizes – 70’s British series about friends from Cambridge University that I finally caught up with forty years later. What an unusual, touching, intelligent pleasure.
Veep – binged this one. The joy of invective, hatred, self interest and wild profanity! Politics as humiliation! The delight of pure id! Julia Louis-Dreyfus offers one of the all-time greatest female comedy performances, fearless in her full embrace of the characters’ substantial flaws. Unlikeableness reaches new levels. This series was absurdly hilarious and outlandish when Obama was President, and now is devastating and nightmarish with Trump. In a surreal moment I watched the final episode about transfer of power the night before the inauguration. Arghhhhhhhhhh!
JL-D/Veep
Fargo – The first season explores the nature of evil in the world. Stunning and dark.
Red Oaks – Endearing coming of age Amazon show set in the 80s in a New Jersey country club. Top notch directors and two mensch actors in Richard Kind and Richard Mazur (in a bit role). Like Philip Roth in setting and theme, if not in tone or quality.
John Oliver and Bill Maher – how else to stay informed?
Modern Family - Still....
Blackish- preachy but wacky.
Movies: Moonlight – lovely, powerful and transfixing, the most worthwhile film of the year. Both this film and the other best film, Manchester by the Sea, are characterized by their examination of emotional constraint, and by their deep and specific sense of place: the ocean is key in each film.
Moonlight
Manchester by the Sea – I just loved this sad, upliftingly depressing movie about how things happen that can never be made right. Kenneth Lonergin has a distinct voice (see You Can Count on Me – another favorite of mine) Casey’s performance was specific and heartbreaking. Extra points for Kyle Chandler and his FLN connection.
Manchester by the Sea
Hell or High Water – excellent modern Western with traditional Western atmosphere of bleakness and destiny. It portrays a desolate, marginalized population who would rather support a bank robber than a bank, and sheds light on those who embrace Trump. Jeff Bridges is, as always, fantastic. Arrival – abstract, metaphysical and poetic sci fi about language, communication and time. A really unusual popular movie. Great Amy Adams. American Honey – teenage wasteland. Is that Shia LaBoef acting like James Franco? Captain Fantastic – intriguingly ambivalent. Plaudits to Viggo Mortensen. A Bigger Splash – slick and sensual thriller where one character talks too much and one is silent. Memorable Ralph Fiennes and Tilda Swinton.
*****
Hidden Figures – movie of the week template elevated by sterling execution and good intentions. Usually good intentions are a negative for me, but this corny thing gets away with them. Sully – Tom Hanks used to do swagger; now he excels in anxiety.
Love and Friendship – Jane Austen film without the usual stick up its ass. La La Land – meta without irony. I experienced this as a film about the issues in making a movie musical in 2016: I thought it was quite cerebral. I really did not get the heartwarming stuff. And Ryan Gosling? He was so cool and edgy in Half Nelson, an amazing performance. When did he become so stiff? Is it the cost of his working out? Florence Foster Jenkins – better than you think Sing Street – charming and goofy. Also better than you thought it would be, especially for this afficianado of teen comedies and music. Loving -- reserved and moving. Another film that got away with good intentions. Fences – Great play, too stagey, too bloviating.
Sasha Lane/American Honey
MUSIC Music from here, there and everywhere entered (and re-entered) my world this year.
Josh Ritter – Sermon on the Rocks: When I heard these songs on WXPN this year, they just popped, especially “Birds of the Meadow” which always made me take note.
“Sunshine Superman”: The vastly underrated purveyor of the terminally hippy dippy, Donovan, wrote and sang this 60’s single of pure joy. One of the things that makes Donovan so special is the inventive arrangements of his songs. Just listen to the baseline. And the same sunshine that “came softly through my window today” in this song was evident to Joni Mitchell who saw “the sun through yellow curtain lace” on her “Chelsea Morning,” and to the Vaselines “and the sun shines in the bedroom when you play” in “Son of a Gun,” two other songs of unadulterated hedonism. Let’s also remember another single, Donovan’s purest expression of hippy mindlessness and flower power, “Atlantis,” which always brings a smile I can’t wipe off my face no matter how hard I try. Performing “Atlantis” on TV in the 60s, midpoint through the song, Donovan whispered “Hail Atlantis” in his most wispy voice, and then stood up in his white Nehru gown, and started throwing blossoms. You gotta believe the 60s were sweet! For Donovan’s tart musical antidote to this treacle, listen to the bad vibes made manifest in his “Season of the Witch.” In fact, the entire Sunshine Superman album is well worth the listen. If you like it, try Mellow Yellow next.
Donovan
“Autumn Sweater”: Yo La Tengo: oh! Yo La Tengo! I’ve been loving their quiet covers album Stuff Like That There from 2015 all 2016, read a decent book about them, and been listening to their other albums, most notably I Hear Two Hearts Beating as One from whence comes “Autumn Sweater”: Minimal sound, trance-like sensual beat, mysterious, obsessive lyrics, whispered vocal. Over their long career, this band bit off a piece of Velvet Underground, added a dollop of 60s trash, and built the little band that could (how mixed is that metaphor?): has it been 30 years now of regularly released, lovely soft/ harsh excellent music?
Yo La Tengo
“Falling Rain”: trance-like folk rock cover from Karl Blau that lasts 10 minutes but only seems like 6 minutes. Loved it every time I heard it.
American Band by Drive-by Truckers –They play churning, passionate classic two (or three) guitar rock that splits the difference between those rivals Neil Young and Lynard Skynard, with sharper politics than either (but more limited melodic gifts.) They’ve maintained consistently empathic songwriting for over 20 years and 11 studio albums, and, deeply affected by the current political turmoil going on in the USA, this piece may be their best yet. From Treyvon Martin to Robin Williams. Words of wisdom: “Killing’s been the bullet’s business”; “You don’t see too many white kids lying bleeding in the street.”
You Want it Darker -- Leonard Cohen: I don’t have to go through the list of those major music artists we’ve lost this year. Though Bowie and Prince are undeniably giants, the two whose loss affected me most deeply are Merle Haggard and this man who left his profound, clear-eyed, stirring goodbye note. It completed his extraordinary and singular life work, and listening to it is heartbreaking. An earlier song by L. Cohen I’ve always loved is his epic about “Joan of Arc,” a stately waltz, making manifest his major theme: the confluence of sex, death and spirit. This final album is its epitome. I treasure the three times I was able to see him perform.
L.Cohen “You’ve Lost that Loving Feeling”: This song, that never really left, re-entered my consciousness through a radio interview and a book passage this year. I loved it when I first heard it: I remember responding to its deep, echoed sound of profound sadness in November of 1964. I’ve been thinking about what 13-year-old me made of its message of romantic despair and loss. I realized that this song did not chiefly resonate with feelings of sadness I already had; it instead taught me one way of how to be sad in love that I took with me and held deeply. I learned how to be depressed in a bad relationship from this song. Art doesn’t only resound with our prior feelings, it provides emotional education.
“Cigarettes and Alcohol” – Oasis: tuff “Bang a Gong (Get it On)” remake.
Patti Smith sings “A Hard Rain is Gonna Fall” at Bob Dylan’s Nobel Prize induction: Dylan is great; since 1964 he’s been my hero; I adore him. One could make a case for Greatest Songwriter Ever! He clearly extended the range of song to include literary influence -- Beat and Surrealist poetry chiefly -- like no one ever has done -- (I’ll have to check that statement out with my Classical Music friends.) But I experience some melancholy at the choice because his victory denies the prize to my favorite contemporary writer, the richly deserving Philip Roth. They are not going to award this to another American Jew for decades. Patti’s genuine emotional presence and humility at the ceremony along with the songs current relevance add layers of complexity to this whole Nobel process. Incredible performance and incredible song. Hail, hail Bob, Patti and Philip!
Books: Tess of the D’Urberville—a classic is a classic because it amazes.
Thomas Hardy
The Anatomy of a Song by Marc Myers -- Taken from his column for The Wall Street Journal, 45 songs from Lawdy Miss Clawdy to Losing My Religion are discussed through interviews with creators about how each song got to be. Tidbits about songwriting inspiration are less interesting than the production details, but most of these allow you to hear the song in a new way, and to get some neat factoids. I found it compulsively readable and it has stuck with me more than some of the other music books I read this year. Fun!
Taras Bulba – Gogol. Yes, Taras Bulba. Explains Putin (and Trump)
After Dark by Haruki Murakami -- elegant exploration of mediated reality. Lovely in its unity of time.
Last Night by James Salter -- Sharply written, stunning stories about adultery.
The Ghost Writer and Exit Ghost – Roth at his best. Extraordinary complexity, passion and humor in two short page turners -- a book and its sequel -- separated by almost 30 years. They book end Zuckerman’s story, and offer a prelude to Roth’s retirement. What tremendous place do these contemplative and impulsive men -- Nathan Zuckerman, Rabbit Angstrom (see John Updike) and Frank Bascomb (see Richard Ford) -- occupy in our time.
P. Roth

The comeback was literally killing Iolani, she could feel it in her bones. Literally. Her sore body was begging for her to rest, but how? She was struggling with her rap, still not happy with the end result she recorded almost as week ago and worst of all, she was still thinking about it. It. That ugly moment that seemed to hover above her head.
Pushing the thought as deep down as possible, she marched through the hallway, trying to make it to the dance studio for private rehearsal time. She needed to focus on the middle section of choreography and make sure her timing was right.
Arms filled with her notebook, her backpack that she didn’t take time to properly wear and a pair of shoes to wear on the wood floors of the dance studio, Iolani was rushing to get there. She would only have so much time before she was expected to meet up with Yeohyun and work through the dance together before helping to teach and guide the others.
As her head swam at the thought, she felt herself collide with a wall--maybe a chest. Immediately her belongings tumbled out of her hands, hitting the carpet with a dull thud. The curse word was loud and exasperated when it left her.
“Thanks genius,” she said, voice low as she looked down at her belongings strewn across the floor. “You might want to watch where you’re going.”

Partners in Dance
✏ @glriolani
It had been exactly 47 minutes since the choreographer had left them to practice on their own after dismissing them for the day. Receiving the new choreography after recording the song just two days earlier seemed a bit much for the group.
For Yeohyun of course, it was different. Dance was what she loved to do and it was something she could do for hours as long as she had her bottle of water filled. And that was exactly what she was planning on doing.
She had to get the choreography down to a T so she could guide her group if needed during their practice the next day. It was past 10 at night already. The rest had left the practice room in favour of other places that Yeohyun wasn’t aware of.
After all, her senses were trained on the bass coming out of the speakers and running through her body. All her senses were trained on the figure on the mirror, critical of the way it moved, comparing it to the choreography given to them to notice anything else.

No matter how much adrenaline coursed through his veins or how worn out he felt by the time he exited the van after the concert, Intak knew he had a checklist of things to do. He had to call his girlfriend and check on her. He was going to eat some left over pork belly. And by god, the boy was gonna message a couple of his friends in Cherry Bomb to see how they were doing after they debuted. As he followed the line of members into their dorm, Intak quickly texted Subin.
kkt-intak: heeeyyy just got back in and wanted to check on you kkt-intak: are you still awake?

individual activities.
JEWEL BOX
STATUS:
Comeback post-production / promotions.
BRIEFING:
Jewel Box gears up for the release of their 6th full album, SURREAL, and their two MVs for their two title tracks on June 28th. In the last steps of preparing the bulk of their promotional material for the following month, they finish the pre-recording of a couple TV shows, as well as hold photoshoots and interviews for diverse fashion magazines. It’ll be a particularly challenging week for the girls, as eall promotional cycles are, especially at their beginning.
ACTIVITIES:
26/07, 3:00PM. ( PUBLIC ) Weekly Idol recording at MBC Global Media Center.
28/07, 4:30PM. ( PRIVATE ) Photoshoot and interview for July issue of Vogue Korea held in a private studio in Mapo gu.
02/07, 10:00AM. ( PUBLIC ) Pre-recording for Inkigayo at SBS Gonggaehall.
PROMPTS:
Funny Business. Behind the scenes, Weekly Idol tends to be way more quieter than what the audience gets to see on broadcast. The girls review the main talking points for the show, and the PD asks them how they would feel about the hosts making light jokes about their recently disclosed love lives.
Memory Lane. Jewel Box holds a round table, joint interview with the Vogue Korea correspondent, a fashion editor they had worked with numerous times. The focus of the interview is the group’s maturing image and their impact on Korean pop culture. The questions, listed below, throw the girls in a journey through memories in their dressing room, as they review highs and lows, nostalgia for their rookie days tinging the conversation. QUESTIONS ASKED: 1. National Girlgroup. What does the title mean to you? Do you feel worthy of it? 2. What do you think is the image Jewel Box represents to young women, rather than to a male audience? 3. It’s often said that your group’s growth has benefitted other gilrgroups after you. What do you think of that belief? Is it a blessing or a burden?
HEX
STATUS:
Comeback promotions.
BRIEFING:
HEX concludes their promotional activities for their fourth comeback. The rookie group’s pace is downright frenetic, holding a five-week long cycle, a week longer than the usual Nebula act. Nothing short of impressive, it’s far from the last their fans will be seeing of them, as their first individual concert dates in July rapidly approach. The group’s physical and mental strength is being constantly challenged, but the passion and support their fans have shown them seems to only grow as days roll by.
ACTIVITIES:
27/06, 9:PM. ( PRIVATE ) Choreograpy rehearsal at Nebula Entertainment Studios.
02/07, 10:00AM. ( PUBLIC ) Pre-recording for Inkigayo at SBS Gonggaehall.
PROMPTS:
Fatigue. Between a regularly packed schedule and the pressure of their concert debut looming over their heads, nerves are running thin in the HEX practice room. The boys cope with spent muscles and wired minds as they drag through practice, patience on an all time low.
Final Shot. HEX film their last stage for their latest hit song, WILD, off their HEXTIC album at SBS’s Inkigayo. The sight of a massive amount of fans gathering at the parking lot of the Gonggaehall has lost the impact it had a year ago. The dressing room is only silent when they’re out to film, but as soon as they head back, the sense of completion lifts the group’s spirits as their manager offers to take them out for dinner to celebrate their successful promotions.
ATLAS
STATUS:
Comeback production.
BRIEFING:
With their sights on their new comeback, ATLAS find themselves immersed in recording studio and practice rooms as they prepare their upcoming album. Artistic visions are bound to clash and harsh truths may be on the out, only if the group wants to present their best features after their 2016 unimpressive results. On the other hand, however, they’re allowed some breathing room as they meet their fans in a private event for their fanclub and blow off some steam.
ACTIVITIES:
29/06, 1:00PM. ( PRIVATE ) Album recording at Nebula Entertainment Center.
30/06, 6:00PM. ( PUBLIC ) ATLAS Summer Fan Event at K-Live Performance Hall.
PROMPTS:
Migraine. The temperatures aren't the only thing rising in Nebula's headquarters. With their new album now in pre-production, ATLAS have found themselves tense with the expectations of their long awaited comeback. Creative differences are bound to happen now that they are back to recording in the studio, and it's only a matter of time before their worries surface.
Come Undone. ATLAS belongs onstage. Nothing ever brings the group’s mood up like the prospect of performing, the release of pent up energy in the only way they have known for way over six years since debut. After the fan event, the group shoves differences aside and gathers for drinks at a club.
ANTI
STATUS:
Comeback pre-production.
BRIEFING:
The importance of last month’s album confirmation may only be really understood by the anti girls. They’re back in the Yongsan gu based Nebula headquarters, and they’re in for a series of meetings to discuss the artistic and musical direction they’ll take for their upcoming release with creative directors, music producers and chief stylists. But they’ll be allowed to have the dessert ahead of the meal, as they head on the beginning of the week to Okinawa for a summer-themed photoshoot in the beach.
ACTIVITIES:
26/06, 10:00AM. ( PRIVATE ) Photoshoot for the July issue of Cosmopolitan at Century Beach, in Okinawa, Japan.
29/06, 2:00PM. ( PRIVATE ) Meeting with Nebula Black’s creative board at the Nebula Entertainment Center.
PROMPTS:
Salt Water. Sunshine and the beach: the girls have little to complain about. Although the visit mainly centers around the photoshoot, the change of air and the good weather all contribute for the session to wrap up soon, leaving the girls to enjoy a few hours as tourists in a summery paradise.
Start Anew. Choosing the concept and the style to be pursued in an album is never a task anti takes lightly. And now, stakes are higher than ever, and the excitement in the room seems to rise to meet their level.
PRISM A
STATUS:
Off-season.
BRIEFING:
Although she’s off-season, her 2017 main single still figures among the top 100 positions on online charts months after its release. Though she certainly has seen busier days, Prism’s first soloist still maintains a full schedule. She is set to lend her voice to an Orbit song in July, tucking into the recording booth to bring the demo to life. There are rumors in the company that she may already be working on her next release even though it’ll likely only be released in 2018.
ACTIVITIES:
29/06, 1:00PM. ( PRIVATE ) Orbit single recording at Nebula Entertainment Center.
PROMPTS:
Muse. She hides away into a private studio she rents through an acquaintance to pour her thoughts into the microphone, testing out new sounds. Alone or with company, she stays up late recording.
PRISM B
STATUS:
Off-season.
BRIEFING:
Scouted by modelling agencies, the soloist is having a year filled with events and advertisements that have little to do with music. His fans will be pulled from the drought, however, as it was announced a month ago he would be the opening act for Namie Amuro’s South Korean stop in the Pacific Encore concerts of her last tour. Planning a set of 4 songs for the concert’s preface, it’s also said he’ll feature in a number with Namie herself as her dancing partner.
ACTIVITIES:
01/07, 2:00PM. ( PRIVATE ) Final rehearsal at the Olympic Gymnastics Arena.
PROMPTS:
Nerves. The concert practice has been intense, many eyes from Namie’s team close on him as he is expected to deliver the performance Nebula’s representatives ensured he could deliver. It’s only back in his dressing room that he can get to unwind.
combo prompts.

Second Impressions
✏; @glrsoomin
Clutching her growling stomach, Yeohyun made her way to the cafeteria for lunch. They had practice till a while ago and they will have practice again. Left to her own devices, she made her way to the food counter.
Hearing familiar voices wasn't uncommon in her company but something still made her turn when she heard a couple of people converse animatedly nearby. Her unconscious nervousness dissipated slightly when she saw Heeyoung. But her heart rate picked up once again when she spotted Soomin next to her.
Soomin was someone she looked up to in many fields. She was an actor, a singer and a model. She could barely handle acting and dancing and her acting wasn't too great. She strived to improve and the one person she looked up to was Soomin. So of course she was nervous seeing her be so friendly with her own group member. Yeohyun was anything but friendly. She was slightly jealous of people who could smile and initiate conversations. Giving them one last longing look, she moved forward in the line to get her food.

Dancing tips
✏; @glrhyewon
Another night. It was just another night Yeohyun was dancing away in the practice room after the choreography was given to them. It was another sleepless night and she found herself on the way to the convenience store again. It was too late at night for even eve-teasers so she walked out of the company building wearing her sweatpants and spaghetti top, her hair pulled into a bun under her snapback.
She found herself thanking the gods again as she entered the 24hrs store and made a beeline for the corner which held her treasure, the energy drinks. She couldn't get dehydrated at this point and neither could she eat much without messing up her diet. These inexpensive ionised drinks had become her saving grace for the time being.
Her ears perked up at the sound of another pair of footsteps entering the shop. Grabbing a few bottles of sports drinks and a couple of coffee, she peeked out from the aisle she was in. Her eyes weren't fooling her, right? Did she actually see Hyewon disappear into another aisle?
Shaking it off as paranoia, she headed to the billing counter to ring up her things, her purse tucked under her arm.

who are you
This was a risky endeavor and if Iolani had any real sense, she’d turn around and go back to one of the practice rooms and just abandon trying to finish up another unofficial track she wanted to drop before Cinnamon’s comeback really swung into gear.
But Iolani didn’t have any sense and she was being bold. At least that’s what she told herself to justify walking to the practice room she knew Atlas was in and hanging around until she saw Daehyun. But none of that made this any less nerve racking.
She paced outside the studio room Atlas was using to do dance rehearsals several times. She needed to amp herself up. Being a fan of Atlas had the added pressure of doing this right and hoping he would accept. After all, Daehyun had a great voice and if his personality matched, they could probably have an easy go of recording this track without much issue.
“This is so...” Iolani trailed off before groaning loudly and letting her forehead thud loudly into the wall just beside the door to the dance studio.
