#2172 - Allocasuarina verticillata -
Drooping She-Oak
AKA worgnal, shingle oak, coast she-oak, river oak, salt-water swamp oak, and Casuarina verticillata. The specific means 'forming or having whorls'.
A small tree endemic to SE Australia, usually growing to between 4 and 10m. It usually grows in grassy woodland, sometimes in pure stands and sometimes with eucalypts, but is also found on rocky sea coasts, coastal shale, and on dry ridges inland.
Apparently chewing on the foliage stimulates saliva flow, if you're crossing dry country, and the young cones are edible or at least chewable. The timber has been used for tool-making, boomerangs, and other purposes by our indigenous peoples, and the mature cones (as in the photo) as children's toys. The cones are also the favoured food of Glossy Black Cockatoos in some areas, which is convinient because Glossy Black Cockatoos nest in the reserve.

Discovery of Rare Glossy Black Cockatoo Nest on NSW Mid North Coast
In a groundbreaking discovery that has left conservationists elated, the elusive glossy black cockatoo nest has been found in the lush landscapes of New South Wales’ Mid North Coast. This rare find is a remarkable achievement, as these magnificent birds have kept their nests hidden for over two decades. The glossy black cockatoo, a threatened species in Australia, has long been a focus of conservation efforts due to its vulnerable status. The recent revelation of their nests has ignited hope for the preservation of this iconic bird. The glossy black cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus lathami) is a stunning and distinctive bird, known for its glossy black plumage and vibrant red tail feathers. These birds are relatively small in size compared to other cockatoo species, measuring around 45 to 50 centimeters in length. The males can be identified by their bright red cheek patches, while the females exhibit paler, yellowish markings. These birds are known for their unique feeding habits, primarily feasting on the seeds of she-oak trees. Unfortunately, when their habitat is ravaged by fires, both the she-oak trees and the hollow-bearing trees they use for nesting are often destroyed. This puts immense pressure on the glossy black cockatoo population, making their nests and breeding sites particularly crucial for their survival. The discovery of glossy black cockatoo nests on the NSW Mid North Coast is a significant milestone in the conservation of these vulnerable birds. Dr. Hawkins, the NSW Department of Planning and Environment’s senior threatened species officer, expressed the importance of this discovery, saying, “It’s a massive step forward … glossy black cockatoos are among the most-threatened species of cockatoos in Australia and are listed as vulnerable in NSW.” For two decades, the glossy black cockatoo nests remained hidden from human eyes, making it challenging for researchers and conservationists to assess their breeding success and habitat needs. The nests were shrouded in mystery until a group of dedicated citizen scientists known as the “Glossy Squad” entered the scene. The Glossy Squad, comprising citizen scientists passionate about conservation, actively participates in the government’s Saving our Species program. Their determination and dedication led to the discovery of three separate glossy black cockatoo nests in the region. These discoveries were made possible through tips from local residents who suspected the presence of these majestic birds in their vicinity. Dr. Hawkins emphasized the vital role of community involvement, stating, “It’s really hard to find them, and the only way to do it is to have ears and eyes on the ground, a network of community members and citizen scientists who love the birds and pay attention to what the birds are doing on the ground.” This collaborative effort underscores the significance of community engagement in conservation. The discovery of these nests is not only a cause for celebration but also a foundation for future conservation efforts. Dr. Hawkins noted that two of the nests resulted in fledglings, marking an exciting milestone in the species’ recovery. Through the study of these nests, researchers can gain valuable insights into the breeding habits and success rates of the glossy black cockatoo. By better understanding these magnificent birds and their needs, conservationists can develop more effective strategies for their protection. The nests provide a window into the glossy black cockatoo’s world, enabling scientists to observe and learn from these elusive creatures. Read the full article

The very rare Kangaroo Island Glossy Black-Cockatoos (Calyptorhynchus lathami halmaturinus).
The Kangaroo Island subspecies is listed as endangered, with a population of about 450 birds before the devastating bushfires of 2019/2020. 75% of their habitat in the western part of Kangaroo Island was impacted by the bushfires. They feed exclusively on Drooping She-oak seeds and only on particular trees in the forest, making their survival even more challenging. Yael and Rob, the Ecopia Retreat owners, have created a haven for these rare birds around Ecopia, planting She-oak trees and putting up bird boxes to help them survive. I was thrilled and awed to be able to find them and see them going about their business in the wild. (på/i Ecopia Retreat) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqQTQaFPj_l/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Walk 359: Jellore Flora Reserve 6km Rating: 150% humidity! 29/01/22 Blimey! Thank heavens I didn’t choose a longer walk. Whereas Janet is strongly averse to mizzle, drizzle & rain, I discovered today that I have an equally strong dislike for high humidity. And we had that in spades today. But to make it all worthwhile some Glossy Black Cockatoos put in a stunning appearance. Just lovely seeing them again after a long absence. And also my first sighting of a snake this season. A somewhat peeved red bellied black, not enjoying Penny’s attention, up and ready to strike. We all moved along very hastily ensuring the dogs came with us.

October 27, 2017 - Glossy Black-Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus lathami)
The smallest black-cockatoo species, these parrots are found in parts of eastern and southern Australia. They mostly eat the seeds of casuarina trees, occasionally also feeding on other types of seeds and the larvae of wood-boring insects. Usually foraging in groups of three birds, they are sometimes found in pairs or larger flocks. They nest in tree cavities and form life-long pairs that stay together all year. Females line the nest hollow and incubate the eggs, often remaining in the nest until the chick is a week old. Males may help feed the chick. Though they are classified by the IUCN as a species of Least Concern, their population is thought to be declining, primarily due to habitat loss and fragmentation.

I've just enjoyed a few days exploring the beautiful landscape of #KangarooIsland off the southern coast of South Australia - one of Australia’s most treasured tourism destinations and a biodiversity hub. A highlight of my visit was spending a few hours on a rainy day watching and photographing a small flock of Glossy Black-Cockatoos (GBC's) on Ironstone Hill in Baudin Conservation Park on the eastern end of the island near Penneshaw.
Starting in the 1800s, European settlers began wiping out large swathes of drooping casuarina trees - the seeds of which the GBC relies on for food - for agriculture and housing. Stands of mature eucalyptus trees, which provide the natural hollows the birds require for nesting, suffered the same fate. Adding to the threat to this species is that nest failure rate in unprotected nests is high, principally as a result of predation by Common Brushtail Possums which have become more common. As a result the South Australian subspecies of the GBC (Calyptorhynchus lathami halmaturinus) has disappeared from the South Australian mainland and is currently restricted to Kangaroo Island. It is listed as Endangered under the Australian Government's Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. A population count of only 150 individuals in the early 1990s caused alarm and as result in 1995 a recovery program began which has been largely successful. By protecting nest hollows from predatory possums, erecting artificial nest boxes, and planting food trees, conservationists helped cockatoo populations spike to nearly 400 individuals by 2016.
The birds live in seven main flocks but 75 percent of the population lives in the western and northern parts of the island, where disastrous fires in the summer of 2019/20 severely impacted the casuarina habitat that the birds rely on. Despite the best efforts of conservationists and citizens, Kangaroo Island's GBC's face an increasingly uncertain future. As Australia's fires only become more common and intense due to climate change, the long-term survival of such a niche and geographically limited subspecies is tenuous. But there is hope, Natural Resources Kangaroo Island discovered 23 glossy black cockatoo chicks on the island earlier this year, some in areas heavily hit by bushfires.I hope you enjoy my photos of this special Australian cockatoo. Please feel free to share and if you feel like supporting the recovery program here is a link to more information - https://www.naturefoundation.org.au/support-us/glossy-black-cockatoo-recovery-program
