"A musician has to be heard. You can't stop now. We can't stop now."
Glod waved a finger at the guitar.
"It's that thing," he said. "It's too dangerous!"
"I can handle it!"
"Yes, but where's it going to end?"
"It's not how you finish that matters," said Buddy. "It's how you go."
"That sounds elvish to me--"

OK, so you know those Terry Pratchett Moments when you suddenly realize that this whole thing (whatever thing you're looking at) is just one long elaborate play on words, and you want to flip him off but actually who you're really angry at is yourself, because he told you! You can't say he didn't tell you! It was right there! He gave you all the pieces!! How could you have missed it?!
?
Yeah, so that's what happened to me today reading Soul Music when I finally (finally! I first read this book in high school! That was 20+ years ago!!) put
"Imp sounds a bit like elf to me." "It just means 'small shoot'", said Imp. "You know. Like a bud." "Bud y Celyn?" said Glod. "Buddy? Worse than Cliff, in my opinion"
together with
"all my family are y Celyns," said Imp. "It means 'of the holly.' That's all that grows in Llamedos, you see."
and got...
Buddy Holly.
Buddy Holly!! How did I miss that? How did I miss that???
Anyway, my knowledge of classic rock is not what it needs to be (clearly), so if anyone can help me out with Cliff (ne Lias) Bluestone, and Glod Glodsson, I'd be grateful.

What in the sweet hells...?
Tumblr media
Okie dokie. Try this.
Tumblr media
Umm. Why... Did she just eat the gold? How is that even possible?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Huh. We fed her a few more coins, but Elma ended up just shouting how much she wanted as there was no end to it.
Tumblr media
Of course. Stupid of me.
Elma was already freaked out by the floating, talking skulls. Now this?!
Tumblr media
I think I asked why we had to pay?
Lil trip into Reithwin Town. This is where Bag3 veers into horror game territory 😂 and I love it
Tumblr media
And then I just lied.
Tumblr media
But Gerringothe kept singing the well-known hit (in dwarven realms at least), Gold Gold Gold by Glod Glodsson.
Anyway. I flung all our money at her and she, err, expired. From too much gluttony for greed I guess?! Greedy glutton for gold? I dunno. You get all your gold back, and more besides, as the Toll house has gold coins dropped everywhere. Plus you get a cool weapon to boot. With nary a spell or a fist thrown. They are my favourite battles.

Soul Music, by Terry Pratchett **Spoilers for Mort**
I mean this in the most affectionate way. This book is weird!
You ever wonder what a cultural force like Rock 'n' Roll would have on a world where magic is omnipresent, and the concept of death is personified?
Wonder no more!
The musical revolutions of early rock and punk almost evolve side by side and turn most everyone into beatlemaina teenagers. And throughout all of this is woven puns, word play, and of course the process of grief and belief. Because what would a book about music be if everyone feared the reaper?
Since Mort, Death's adopted daughter Ysabell and Death's former apprentice have had a daughter, Susan.
Mort and Ysabell have decided to raise Susan with logic and with as little knowledge of her Grandfather as possible.
Then, they die.
This leaves the very logical Susan to live in her boarding school and Death longing to forget everything that hurts.
Unlike the last time that Death took a holiday, people don't stop dying. Instead, Susan, who seems to have inherited the ability to perform the family trade, is tapped.
With the help of the Death of Rats, Binky, Albert, and a snarky raven Susan is shown the ropes.
Meanwhile, in Ankh-Morpork, newly arrived musician Imp Y Celyn, wants to make it big. But performing is tightly controlled by the Musician's Guild, and it costs more money than Imp has to join. And if you play without joining... let's just say that a musican of any stripe would find sitting down to compose... difficult.
He joins with two other down on their luck Musician's, Dwarf, Glod Glodsson and Troll, Lias Bluestone they play horn and percussion, respectively and along with Imp on strings they decide to form a band... and then Lias breaks Imp's harp.
They go to a pawn shop where Imp picks up an odd gituar. Together they begin to play some very new, and soon to be found very intoxicating music. They come to be known as The Band with Rocks In, and their new genre, Music with Rocks In. New bands spring up at least one of which didn't feel the need to learn how to play their instruments.
And most of the city and Unseen University goes a little wacky.
So Death tries to forget, remembers how to get drunk, and deals with feelings, dispite the lack of glands. Susan tries to do The Duty, while trying to reconcile the logic she was raised on with the impossible she finds herself in. The Band has to be The Band while Imp, now called Buddy (his real name translates to Bud of the Holly. Now, you must sing either Peggy Sue or The Day the Music Died - I'll wait) becomes strange and withdrawn, unless on stage. The Archchancellor and Ponder Stibbons tries to get the university staff to get back to the right kind of abnormal. The Librarian plays keyboards and builds a motorcycle.
This book is awesome! I love old Rock n Roll, and I am a sucker for puns and refernces.I laughed way too hard at We Are Certinly Dwarves, and a band nearly coming up with Def Leppard while discussing leopard print trousers.
I love Susan's journey and Death trying to forget after the death of his daughter and son in law.
I love how Ysabell and Mort try to will the unbelievable out of their daughter
I mean think about it. Susan is born to a woman who was 16 for 35 years, and a man who managed to briefly be Death and be spared by Death. And they wanted to raise her with logic. Susan's very existence wacks logic in the head with a frying pan.
Susan's arch going from being purely realistic to accepting, but not liking the weird parts of life, was fun. I liked how she had some of the same moral objections to The Duty that her father had.
How The Band, Death, and Susan's stories all dovetail together was perfect
And I want to read this again just to see if I can catch more puns and references.

“You want to go back to playing for half a dozen people in some cellar somewhere after this?” said Buddy. “Who’s the most famous horn player there ever was, Glod?” “Brother Charnel,” said the dwarf promptly. “Everyone knows that. He stole the altar gold from the Temple of Offler and had it made into a horn and played magical music until the gods caught up with him and pulled his—” “Right,” said Buddy, “but if you went out there now and asked who the most famous horn player is, would they remember some felonious monk or would they shout for Glod Glodsson?”
Felonious Monk. For FUCK'S sake.
as long as someone, somewhere, is still groaning fuck ME oh jesus christ when they realize a discworld pun, terry pratchett lives on
(tonight's outburst coming to you from me looking at a book reading order and realizing the fifth elephant is referencing the fifth element, not sure how i missed that one)

Glod knew a guitar when he saw one. They were supposed to be shaped like a woman, but this was only the case if you thought women had no legs, a long neck and too many ears.

The Post Office stumbled on for decades, but when Ankh-Morpork opened its gates to dwarf immigrants from the mountains, more than doubling the flow of people across the Sto Plains, many citizens took advantage of the dwarfs’ informal but reliable couriers.  For a while the Post Office maintained a city-wide service, but the End had Come.
--Terry Pratchett and Stephen Briggs, “The Ankh-Morpork Archives” (illustration by Paul Kidby) (Love this picture of some of the notable dwarfs in Ankh-Morpork!!  The front row is Gimlet (owner of the famous delicatessen), Cheery Littlebottom (looking gorgeous as always), Glod Glodsson (of the Band With Rocks In), Grabpot Thundergust (purveyor of fine cosmetics), Modo (gardener at Unseen University), and of course Lance-Constable Cuddy (mayherestinpeace).  I think the person on the left of the back row may be Gunilla Goodmountain or Boddony of the Times based on the soft hat, but I’m not sure who the others are.  Any ideas?)

Dwarfs weren't given to introspection, but Glod was suddenly aware of a desire to be a long way away from here, in a cave somewhere.

Happy Sunday!
How has everyone’s week been? Mine has been pretty good overall! It got off to the best start with a bank holiday too – what a shame!
Source: Giphy
Okay, a little optimistic perhaps! But not having to get up at 6:45am is a win – right?
I took the opportunity to publish my Reading List for April on Monday, which I have been looking forward to sharing with you. This month I am switching it up a little and instead of reading a mixture of ARC’s and traditionally published books… the intention was to give the ARC’s a wee break. Then I received an ARC I requested which changed the plan SLIGHTLY. Just a little bit, okay? I broke the ARC-only plan for March with Strange The Dreamer, so it’s all good!
Speaking of which, I published my review of this amazing book on Wednesday! I can’t wait until October for Muse of Nightmares! If you haven’t checked out my review yet, you can find a cheeky little link here.
  Books Read
I finally finished reading Ekata: Fall of Darkness by Dominique Law at the beginning of this week. I mentioned in my previous Sunday Summary that I was struggling with this book. The situation of the relations between characters got a little better, enough to finish the book.
Next, I picked up Soul Music by Terry Pratchett. At the time of writing this post I am 74% through the book. I am enjoying the book, but I don’t think it is going to be one of my favourites of the series. That being said, there are some great quotes I have pulled out of this one. My favourite has to be this one:-
‘Glod Glodsson,’ said the dwarf. ‘You just play the harp?’
‘Anything with strings on it,’ said Imp. ‘But the harp is the queen of instruments, see.’
‘I can blow anything,’ said Glod.
‘Realllly?’ said Imp. He sought for some polite comment. ‘That must make you very popullar.’
Such is Pratchett’s humour. Sure, there are more sophisticated quotes about the nature of existence and suchlike, but when it comes down to it, it’s these quotes I find the funniest! All the quotes I come across on my Kindle are shared on Goodreads, so if you want to look at any others, you could read them there!
Lastly, I started my next audiobook this week. I am listening to The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris. The story so far is both compelling and harrowing in equal measure. It is awful to think that people were actually forced to lived in concentration camps and were treated no better than cattle. Between this and The Boy in The Striped Pyjamas, a book I am reading later in the month, you can tell I enjoy historical fiction. It’s a morbid month in terms of subject matter!
  Books Discovered
It’s a very Pratchett week! I received an e-mail from Bookbub to tell me that The Fifth Elephant (Book 24) of the series was on sale, so I bought it! I already know I’ll be reading it at some point, so it was a no-brainer!
The Foes Between Us by J M Robison is a pre-order. I was introduced to the author when I read The War Queen for her in exchange for a review! As I really enjoyed this book and I want to support her, I pre-ordered this next one!
  Coming Up..
I listened to The Girl on The Train by Paula Hawkins back in February, so I will be sharing my thoughts on this audiobook with you on Wednesday! I am catching up with myself on the books/ebooks I am reading, so I am going to give myself some breathing room by reviewing this for this week!
Writing this post has inspired me to write another one, so later in the week I am going to share my Top 5 Terry Pratchett quotes from the books I have read so far!
Until next time!
My weekly wrap up - books read, discovered and the posts coming up next week! A blend of the humour/wisdom of Terry Pratchett and difficult topic of the Holocaust makes me realise how varied my book taste is! #bookworm #sundaysummary Happy Sunday! How has everyone's week been? Mine has been pretty good overall! It got off to the best start with a bank holiday too - what a shame!

Every note was sharp as a bell and as simple as sunlight - so that in the prism of the brain it broke up and flashed into a million colors. Glod's mouth hung open. And then the music unfolded in his head. It wasn't Music With Rocks In, although it used the same doors. The fall of the notes conjured up memories of the mine where he'd been born, and dwarf bread just like mum used to hammer out of her anvil, and the moment when he'd first realized that he'd fallen in love. He remembered life in the caves under Copperhead, before the city had called him, and more than anything else he wanted to be home. He'd never realized that humans could sing hole. Cliff laid aside his hammers. The same notes crept into his corroded ears, but in his mind they became quarries and moorlands. He told himself, as emotion filled his head with its smoke, that right after this he was going to go back and see how his old mum was, and never leave ever again. Mr. Dibbler found his own mind spawn strange and disturbing thoughts. They involved things you couldn't see and shouldn't pay for...
