Would You Rather...
A: Be transported to a random inhabited planet in the Rimworld universe, as your choice of xenotype (or a baseliner, that is, a human like those now but with higher radiation resistance) (note: you will be transported to a location on that planet where it is at least possible to survive, so you will not be sent to the middle of the ocean or an apocalyptic wasteland, but you may be sent to a bunker in such a wasteland etc) B: Be reincarnated (immediatley) into the world of the last strategy game you played, as an ordinary citizen of whatever empire or faction you played, at the specific time in whatever playthrough you left off playing, If youve never played a strategy game applicable to this scenario, then it will be for the last played game of the nearest applicable person to you currently C: Be transported into minecraft, with all game mechanics applying, in hardcore mode

(517) Resurrecting Kazuki
At this Point my Colony mostly consists of orphans lookin out for another.
During their first encounter with a mech cluster Kazuki, one of the older orphans, got hit and quickly bled out.
While the remaining fighter bandaged their wounds, Elana, a younger student, grabbed an ancient mech serum to reanimate him;
Witnessing, as his breath returned, the miracles of glitterworld technology.

WOW, RANDY IS REALLY SET ON MAKING THIS RUN A TRAGEDY, HUH
i ended up capturing a raider who was pregnant... recruited her... helped her have her baby... and it was born gravely ill with its only shot of surviving being constant treatment with glitterworld medicine, which we don't have.
i just loaded the baby up onto a transport pod and sent it to an outworlder faction that might have the medicine she needs to survive. her mother will probably never see her again, but it was that or let her die in her mother's arms 🙃
this was supposed to be my evil cult leader run, randy!! why must you make me feel things!!

Called it.
The infiltrating agent colonists always seem like they try to look too appealing, including adopting your ideoligion. Although Mila still screwed that up, because Insomniac is an awful trait.
Tumblr media
Woman you're unarmed. What is your plan here.
She at least had enough sense to pivot to 'just steal some shit and leave,' but
Tumblr media
The shit in question was a bunch of rice, 4 glitterworld medicine, and 3 components. I'd make fun of you for being a lousy pirate, but most of them just try to set random things on fire, so I guess you're at least closer to the mark than normal.
Although... the game somehow lost most of the log of this fight, but
Tumblr media
it seems like Saio outright smashed her leg off with a stun baton. Maybe he's a little too good at this.

Glitterworld Lore
Glitterworlds cannot be built on existing planets because every existing planet in the known universe is either infested by the Sorne geneline of Insectoids, littered with dangerous and unpredictable Archotech artifacts and subject to the whims of said Archotechs, or logged in the databases of various rogue Mechhives, putting those planets under constant threat of Mechanoid occupation and colonization. Instead, glitterworlds are built from scratch on asteroids drifting through space. They're given a core and mass imported from surrounding planets and moons, the proto-glitterworld is moved into a steady orbit around a healthy star, and then a custom-made atmosphere is formed using Ultratech devices. From there, the bare rock that is the proto-glitterworld is terraformed by legions of specialized Mechanoids controlled by one, or several Mechanitor(s). Life is then seeded in custom-tailored nature preserves, and cities are built with imported materials. All with the planet's future inhabitants in mind. This usually makes glitterworlds small, but no less impressive as a feat of engineering and wealth. Under the visionary of an eclectic quintillionaire or system-spanning empire, the new glitterworld will serve as their home, or capital. Their flagship planet. The place where all the impressive shit is built, where all the honored guests meet, and where all products are shipped to.

After 170 hours of play time, many resurrector mech serums and far too much savescumming, I'm proud to say that on the 6th of Aprimay, 5517, 20 colonists and their 7 bonded animals entered cryptosleep and escaped the planet.
These valiant men and women braved years of hardship and sacrifice, and now sleep among the stars, leaving their old world behind.
Out of the three who crashlanded on the planet over 16 years ago, only one survived long enough to make it back home to the stars.
See you on the glitterworld, Gold Crows.

"Abram Righter, Born 5396PGW (Post Glitter-Wars) 7th Septober, went missing Aprimay 1st 5500PGW at age 45, no body has been recovered. Last known location above charted Rimworld 'Hulytexxa RW-JS3910' in the Northern-Western sector, being transported on a Carrier Ship (RGSTN-18125). The ship's hull had been destroyed while it passed over Hulytexxa, causing it to break in two, being one of the largest death tolls of a transport destruction recorded in more that 1600 years, resulting in more than 260,000 found deceased and still counting. Only numerous escape pods were recorded by the ship's database to have launched during the disaster."
Abram Righter is the colony builder, swordsman and second in command of the Hatilu Settlers after he and his 2 other companions, Leo Strider and Katelyn Trail, crash-landed on Hulytexxa after escaping the destruction of their transport ship while in space. Since being trapped on Hulytexxa, he's kept the same tough persona he's always had equipped on patrols of the Glitterworld Streets. When he first crash landed, he acted stone-cold to best cope with the present circumstances, as he had always done since a mute child. Though there was still the odd moment where through the cracks, his soul exposes itself, to show an emotional and compassionate man. This all would change for the better when he would meet Alexandra Bringas, he soon fell in love with her and got married on the very same planet they were stranded on. Since then, his compassion would glow to all the colonists, like his soul finally had someone to rely on after a near full life of constant isolation and bitter loneliness.

mujtama commune, 5505, current population: 30
Tumblr media
when it rains it fuckin pours i guess
Tumblr media
we had our first infestation. i wasn't really prepared for it. generally i do fine with infestations- the bugs are ultimately melee and it's just not that bad- but we didn't have a good choke point mined out near the oil drilling room. which is where they decided to come in.
Tumblr media
first, the hives despawned a bunch of buildings, which isn't supposed to happen. but then of course that one stray bug decided to destroy the very flammable oil rig and there was a massive fire i had absolutely no hope of fighting. it quickly hit 1800F in that room and the hallway spanning the entire base got uncomfortable very, very fast.
i evacuated everybody outside. problem: pyrarock's baby was still asleep in the nursery, with the hall temperature approaching 180 degrees. we also had a couple of people downed in the hospital
Tumblr media
tamryn has a psycast speedboost. so it was up to her to pop that and run back into the base to carry people to safety. look at her go
Tumblr media
but fortunately she managed it with some mild tail burns. everybody slept on the lawn and was not fucking happy, particularly because all the food was inside
Tumblr media
sadly the visitors didn't make it, apparently not understanding that they needed to leave until it was too late.
Tumblr media
eventually the fire finished destroying the drilling room and burned out into the hallway, where it was small enough for a few uninjured people to run in and put it out
the next day tamryn went into labor for her second child
Tumblr media
she made it, but only after throwing several glitterworld medicines at her in our brief spare time amid dealing with the fucking slaver raid that immediately followed
Tumblr media
there were like 40 guys and 40 dogs, all melee so fairly merciful, but still annoying and left a giant mess. we had just cleaned up the raid when a mad caribou tore cowher's leg off
Tumblr media
then he dumped his wife tamryn, who immediately got engaged to one of our melee fighters
Tumblr media
a sickly man who recently joined decided to betray us while sick in bed with the flu
Tumblr media Tumblr media
then a fucking permanent eclipse began
Tumblr media
so we can't grow anything outside anymore. no more beer, no more psychoactive tea, no more cloth (which means no more fucking flak armor). no more wood. this means getting real power generation online so that we can grow in hydroponics is fucking imperative.
it's, uh, a work in progress
Tumblr media
oh god who let the 11 year old help build the reactor core
Tumblr media
we finished off this dogshit awful year with a mechanoid ship crash, which was the first time i have savescummed in this base. had to take a couple of cracks at it. mechanoids suck ass and our combat capabilities aren't mature enough to shrug this off
Tumblr media
anyway fuck 5504. 5504 was bad. here's hoping in 5505 we get some fucking nuclear power

I've become emotionally attached to my rimworld colonists so now you all have to hear about them:
1. Xandarian Stalzer (Xandy), 27. He grew up on a dystopian glitterworld dumping ground and eventually got off the rock by joining a merc group. As the ship's engineer he's good at construction and crafting and great in a fight, but dude's never had to do farmwork or clean in his entire life. Ugly as all hell and kind of a dick.
2. Sera Steiner (Captain), 62. She's a military brat who went on to become a warship captain. The de facto leader of the group, she's brilliant and charismatic, but she's never spent time in nature and is bad at hand to hand combat. Spending her entire life in the military gave her Spartan tastes and an iron will. Partially deaf from a bullet clipping her in the ear. She's my favorite!!
3. Kimiko Asano (Kimmy), 31. She comes from a long line of doctors and went on to become a medic in the navy. She's not good at self-defense but has a passion for it and middling at survival skills, but she's a fucking great doctor. Can't do manual labor. She's also big into transhumanism. Was in the second trimester of pregnancy when I started my game, the father didn't land with them in the crash. Picked up a scary wooden mask on her own and refuses to take it off, so I've decided she wears it to make herself feel braver, since her combat skills are low and being pregnant in a survival situation is terrifying. She's also got chronic pain from an old wound across her torso and arm.
4. Mayumi Good (Gumpy), 16. An introverted shepherd who ran off from her tribe to join my ragtag group of military deserters. She's ironically bad with animals. Likes beating the shit out of people with a club and working with her hands. She also likes medicine, I've decided Kimmy must have gotten attached to her and started training her as a medic. Can't get her to stop smoking weed on the job.
5. Lubov Asano (Lulu), Kimmy's infant. Probably the best behaved video game baby I've ever encountered.
Xandy's married, but his wife didn't make it and he and Kimmy ended up getting together after she saved his life when he got his leg somehow got TAKEN OFF by a raider with a club and he nearly died of blood loss. In probably the most fucked up thing I've had be randomly generated she went and dragged the corpse over to feed it to him and then LEFT IT IN BED NEXT TO HIM to go prepare for surgery, then put it on the communal table and started snacking...they were low on supplies.
He and Gumpy helped deliver her baby (Gumby must have helped deliver animals before), which is when Kimmy and Gumpy started to bond.
Cap spends all day frantically trying to reverse engineer batteries and occasionally negotiating with traders, because despite the penalty from being partially deaf she's the best negotiator. Xandy does all the construction and crafting, and I also made him hunt but now Cap's gotta dip into battery time and do it until I can give him a better prosthetic because he can't run anymore. Guess he's living the stay at home dad life for a while. Gumby's good at fuck all so she does random chores, mines badly, takes care of the two pigs I bought for them, tries to tame horses, and helps Xandy with crafting things. Kimmy takes her of her kid while Xandy is still bedridden, butchers, cooks, and tends the crops when there's not an urgent medical emergency. Also they landed with a horse but the fucker disappeared.

Major Update to Cyanobot's Genes
Mod page, documentation: genes, xenotypes
So a late night whim to invent a few new xenotypes for my own use turned into a couple of months worth of project. I kept stumbling into things I wanted my new xenotypes to do, but couldn't find genes already out there that did exactly what I wanted, and going “well, I could just code that real quick…”
Cut to 7 new xenotypes and 46 new genes, plus one extra side mod.
Changelings/Fairies
Changelings are precocious. They have no parental care, so the baby changeling wanders off in search of other adults to take care of it. They are adorable, charming, and lazy. Everyone loves them, but they’ll eat you out of house and home. They also age slowly and stay children for what feels like forever.
Tumblr media
Then they hit puberty.
Tumblr media
“Fairies” (you know. what changelings grow up into.) are carnivorous, hulking, aggressive and extremely dangerous. They have toxic spittle and are both hard as nails and thick as two short planks.
New genes of interest:
Offspring/Metamorphosis : these genes self-generate from a template so that one of each is created for each xenotype loaded in the game. They let you create two-stage life cycles like this one, where the childhood xenotype metamorphoses into the adult form at puberty, and the adult has offspring of the child xenotype.
Afamilial : afamilial pawns are incapable of Childcare, and get none of the thoughts triggered by blood relations, including: grief, bonuses/penalties from happy/unhappy parents or children, relationship bonuses with blood relatives, etc.
Precocious : precocious babies enter the Child life stage from birth, meaning that they can move around, feed themselves, dress themselves, etc. They can’t fight or work until age 3.
Delightful : other pawns love Delightful pawns. While this is a “positive” gene, I confess I mostly made it while cackling about how it just makes Changeling children more awkward to get rid of.
Glimmer
Tumblr media
Glimmers require Outland - Genetics for all their cosmetic genes, because I’m just in love with the range of gene graphics Outland provides. (There’s an optional version of the Glimmer without the graphics for use without Outland.)
Glimmers are descended from glitterworld utopists who revamped their own genomes to fit their own moral and aesthetic ideals. While they might be ideally suited to living in some utopian post-scarcity commune somewhere, they are fish out of water on a rough and untamed frontier.
Upsides: friendly, cheerful, kind, empathetic, smart, and long-lived. You know, things nice people might want to be.
Downsides: clumsy, herbivorous, and really, really upset by violence.
They are not gonna have a good time on the Rim, poor dears.
Psycrux/Thrall
Depends on VRE - Archon for the innate psylink and a bunch of other genes. I should probably separate them out, but it feels a lot like reinventing the wheel, and frankly by that point I just wanted to get the damn thing published…
Tumblr media
Psycrux are horrible, super-potent, slave-taking psycasters who parasitise the minds of others to fuel their psycasts.
Thralls are their victims, implanted with a xenotype that suppresses their independence and makes them easier to control as slaves or prisoners, while reducing their need to sleep and eliminating the need for recreation so that they can work long hours. They are however rendered slow and stupid, so their work isn’t necessarily great.
New genes of interest:
Psyphon : drain the psyfocus or raw consciousness of others to regain psyfocus. Can cause permanent brain damage or death, but if the psyphon is careful to only sip from the minds of others, it is possible to avoid permanent side-effects.
Implant Xenotype : Allows a pawn to implant others with a xenotype other than their own. Like the Metamorphosis/Offspring genes, one gene is generated for each loaded xenotype.
Domineering (Ideology only) : increased suppression power and arrest chance
Docile (Ideology only) : fewer prison breaks, less suppression required, more easily converted to another ideoligion
Shulk
Tumblr media
Shulks are super-weird, nearly bestial xenohumans designed specifically for colonising deep subterranean biomes. Absolutely inspired by me playing a lot of Biomes! Caverns.
Shulks are solitary, mute, and highly light sensitive, but they are specialised for survival in resource-scarce environments. Quintessentially they are survivors.
Their extremely high metabolic efficiency means they don’t need a lot of food. Strong Stomach and Robust Digestion allow them to eat pretty much anything, raw, while claws and fangs give them a chance of hunting for their food without access to weapons. Expansive Stomach allows them to glut on food while they have access to it and then digest slowly.
Tough Skin, Strong Immunity, and Superclotting protect them against a harsh environment where they may not receive medical attention. Their children grow up fast.
Most of the work for these guys went into their big ol’ leathery tails, which have no mechanical benefit whatsoever. The tails are lightly animated, swapping periodically between a handful of different poses, which required really getting my teeth into the graphics code.
New genes of note:
Expansive Stomach : eat up to 5x as much food and digest slowly
Light Sensitivity : while inspired by the similar gene in VRE - Lycanthrope, I wrote my own version because I wanted it to be slightly more complicated. Bright light causes a larger penalty than dim light, and the light penalty is calculated while on caravans from the biome and the time of day.
Darkling (Anomaly only) : immune to Unnatural Darkness. I wanted Shulks to be able to live entirely without light, which poses a few problems with some of the Anomaly content…
Wist
Tumblr media
Wists were engineered by a corporate interest to serve as specialist battlefield medics. They’re hemogen-powered bloodfeeders, but with a very different vibe to (and far fewer superpowers than) sanguophages.
Their main powers, in addition to medical aptitude, are Coagulate and a new bite laden with pharmaceutical venom that fights infection and also serves as a battlefield booster, numbing pain and boosting mood to prevent awkwardly timed mental breaks. It’s also highly addictive. You wouldn’t want people deciding they don’t need their company medic after all, now would you.
Wists are very sleepy (after all, you only need their services some of the time), but have an Endostimulant Burst ability that wakes them up when needed. All three primary abilities are hemogen powered -- but what’s more abundant in the middle of a battle than the blood of your enemies?
They’re also tiny and purple, because I don’t know. Brand image?
New genes of note:
Endostimulant Burst : consumes hemogen, self-only, immediately reduces Rest need, buff that temporarily boosts consciousness and reduces Rest fall rate
Wist Venom Bite : delivers a drug that boosts Immunity gain, reduces Pain, and boosts mood. Highly addictive.

The Epistle of Ritsuka
To those I’ve left behind,
I’ve seen four generations in this colony. Probably more than you were expecting. Maybe you will call my curse a gift. I won’t.
I expected to die in battle next to you, or to see you smiling down at me as I took my last breaths. Instead, I had to watch all of you leave me, one by one. When bullets and spears pierced your hearts, I could only watch. When frailty took over your bodies, I could only make your departures more comfortable. I’ve lost limbs, but bionics took their place. The phantom pains have long since subsided, but my memories of you never will.
Years ago, it had occurred to me that I was the only one left who had known a life outside of this colony, of this rim world. I still remember the name of our homeworld. We left for brighter horizons, but on the darkest of nights, I can see the farm I left behind, remember stories you’ve told me about your families and friends long gone. The emotional part of me wants to go back…but the rational part knows there’s nothing left for me there. Still, I yearn for something more. To return to the stars.
There are three more like me now, poor souls that share my curse. There will be six total when the newest children come of age. They don’t see our thirst as a curse. They like the power it gives them. Where I see dread at watching another generation come and go, they have excitement. Even Yuna, with her own unblooded children reaching old age. I asked her once why she was so content when Beryl and Tomasz were in the sunset of their lives. She told me it’s because our colony allowed them to reach that age. Her optimism is infectious sometimes. I want to give them that future that they so greatly look forward to.
I planted the seed of shipbuilding first with my bloodline, and they were immediately amenable to the idea. They’re young and easily excitable, and word spread fast. Soon, everyone was working towards building our ship. I’ve spent long days in our workshop researching ships and crafting armor and weapons for the coming threat. The colony’s children sing nursery rhymes about glitterworlds. I don’t have the heart to tell them we could never hope to reach one. I just sing along.
I’m in our crypts now, writing this. It’s the only quiet part of our base. After two expansions, it’s still overcrowded. I’m sure all 24 of your sarcophagi have absorbed enough of my tears to sustain life. When we are galaxies away and the moss creeps into the cracks where your names are etched, will the next person to stumble upon what remains feel the love that I have poured out in this room? Or will that fade away too?
We still need more resources to build the ship, but we’re very close. We will leave by the end of the year, I can feel it. As that time comes, I find myself spending more and more time in these crypts. Before it’s too late, I suppose. Remembering. I’m the only one who can now.
I will forever thank you, Masaru, for leading us through those first few winters. Even when we had to make the decision to amputate Sakii’s tiny frostbitten fingers, you were unflappable. You showed me what leadership truly meant. With every decision I make in our colony, I ask myself what you would do.
I will forever be grateful to you, Kalie, for allowing me to continue my bloodline. Though by the time I accepted the curse from the interloper, I had long passed childbearing age, you wanted to help me feel what true love was like. Thanks to you, I have Yuna. And thanks to the curse, I won’t have to see hair turn silver like yours did.
To Ben - although our relationship was often tumultuous, and although I’ve moved on many times over since I lost you, your face remains the one I see when I close my eyes at night. In your many grandchildren, I see glimpses of you. Your toothy grin in one, your thick brows in another. There are reminders of you all around me.
To everyone else, my only regret is that I have to leave you here. When we make it to our destination, a grand monument will be erected in your honor. All 24 of you, immortalized, preserved for posterity. And even when my heart stops beating–centuries from now, no doubt–your names will not be forgotten.
For the first time, I’m afraid. I don’t know what I will encounter in this new world, or if we will even reach it. Lifetimes ago, when we crash landed in this strange world, I was certain the jungle would swallow us whole and we would die here, but we didn’t. Not immediately, anyway. I’m not so sure if I can endure it a second time. I can only hope the children will carry on like we did.
I’ve led this colony well. My purpose now is to carry on all of your legacies. I vow that you will not be forgotten.
Until we meet again,
– Ris

Well, things were starting to look hopeful, right up until
Tumblr media
a raid happened at literally the exact moment that Umeko and Gavozz both came down with malaria. Again. Just like last winter.
There was a single glitterworld medicine in the base when they found it, and out of the goodness of her heart, Umeko used it on Gavozz. Also because Gavozz got stabbed by one of the raiders, when they were fighting off a raid, with malaria.
Umeko, on the other hand, had to try treating her own disease, with normal medicine, and then had to get in and out of bed to continue applying treatments, cook food, and deal with necessities like throwing more wood into the furnace. Gavozz had a much better chance against the disease, so she normally would be the pick for that kind of thing, but she can't move very fast, because she got stabbed while fighting off raiders with malaria.
Thanks to her future tech medical treatment, Gavozz pulled through smoothly. Umeko...
Tumblr media
The disease was 94% of the way to killing her when she finally gained immunity. I've seen much closer, but it was still too close for comfort. It also took a lot longer for her to beat it, so she's spent the last few days like this.
