Zeus Hypatos

Next in my "Epithets of Zeus" series is Zeus Hypatos. I've also seen it conflated with the epithet Hypsistos and they seem to have similarities, but I'm not as educated on Hypsistos. The epithet seems to acknowledge his position as the king and most supreme of the gods! Hypatos, like Polieus, has a slightly different form of worship that sets it apart from the rest of the epithets, which I'll be speaking about today. Some translations of Hypatos that I've seen include "the supreme", "the most high" "the most supreme", "highest", etc.

He was worshipped under this epithet in Sparta, and there was even a statue of him! In fact, it was the oldest bronze statue:

We learn for instance from Pausanias that the oldest bronze statue was from the early sixth-century BC; it depicted Zeus Hypatos (‘Highest’) at Sparta and was made of hammered bronze plates fitted together with nails (Pausanias 3.17.6, 8.14.7; LIMC 55). - p. 25 of "Zeus" by Ken Dowden

He also had a temple (and another statue) in Boeotia, on Mount Hypatos (see where the word comes from?):

However, the thing that I find most interesting about the worship of Zeus Hypatos are not his statues or his temples, but the fact that Zeus Hypatos was never offered a libation or an animal sacrifice, but rather only cakes:

Pausanias, Description of Greece 1. 26. 5 : "Before the entrance [of the Erekhtheion in Athens] is an altar of Zeus Hypatos (Most High), on which they never sacrifice a living creature but offer cakes, not being wont to use any wine either."

So, if you ever want to acknowledge the supreme Zeus Hypatos, make sure to pull out your finest red velvet cake to offer!

Un ecran de blocare mai personal, frumos și util

Ecranul de blocare este reinventat, oferind o personalizare mai profundă. Acum, utilizatorii pot adăuga un efect de profunzime la fotografia lor de pe ecranul de blocare, pot sa afiseze un slideshow cu fotografii și pot personaliza chiar si tipul de font utilizat. Noile widget-uri de pe ecranul de blocare facilitează obținerea de informații utile dintr-o privire, cum ar fi evenimentele viitoare din calendar, nivelul bateriei, alarmele, fusuri orare, progresul activitatilor și multe altele.
