Our Guide to Virginia’s Historic Garden Week
One of the private residencies open to viewing during the Leesburg tours.
As the flowers bloom and the birds sing, we know spring is upon us. While everyone is wondering how to spend their warmer days, we already know that we’ll be relaxing at the Garden Club of Virginia’s Historic Garden Week. Hosted across numerous locations throughout the state, from April 27th until May 4th, some of our favorites reside within our own Hunt Country. Tour ticket prices vary by location, but discounted tickets may be purchased in advance online at the Historic Garden Week website.
The Winsor House of Little Washington
Kick off your Historic Garden Week at the Winsor House, nestled in the heart of Little Washington. Deborah Winsor, of August Georges, opens her home to the garden tour on April 27th. This tour of Little Washington begins at 10 o’clock a.m., and concludes at 5 o’clock p.m. Once you’ve gotten your fill of florals, take a quick excursion through the countryside to Wild Roots Apothecary. Treat yourself to our favorite locally-sourced and natural tonics, soaps, and other various products that always leave us feeling calmed and refreshed.
A view of the grounds of Glen Gordon Manor.
Countryside Fare and Ambience
To wrap up a long day of trekking through the countryside, reserve a table (or room) at Glen Gordon Manor, of Huntly. Overlooking the picturesque Shenandoah National Park, dinner here seems like a naturally-perfect ending to your day exploring Hunt Country.
A view of the historic Oatlands Manor and Grounds.
Prestige and Peonies
Continue your tour through Hunt Country in Leesburg, with this location’s ticket covering the cost of both days of touring, on April 28th and 29th. On these dates, The Leesburg and Fauquier-Loudoun Garden Clubs host tours to numerous locations, including four private properties and five gardens. On the 28th, tours take place from 1 o’clock to 5 o’clock p.m. The tours of the 29th kick off at 10 o’clock a.m., and conclude at 5 o’clock p.m. These tours are headquartered at the historic, iconic, and stunning Oatlands Carriage House Museum. Take a day, or two, taking in the sights that the Leesburg countryside has to offer. You won’t regret it!
Embrace the Outdoors
Take a break from touring and enjoy the quaint, small-town feel of the Leesburg Historic District. Cowbell Kitchen might just be our favorite spot for lunch, or for a quick treat. We can’t get enough of their pastries! In between tours, enjoy some speciality shopping or take a stroll past The Fine Gallery. Arouse your senses by taking in some of their incredibly unique pieces. And don’t forget about dinner! Although there’s so many delectable choices, we always bring our friends to Tuscorora Mill Restaurant or The Wine Kitchen.
Blue Ridge Beauty
Conclude your trip of Hunt Country with tours of the rolling hills of Piedmont. On May 1st and 2nd, The Warrenton Garden Club hosts countryside excursions of our region’s mountains and valleys from 10 o’clock a.m. to 5 o’clock p.m. Of all the beautiful gardens and properties, we are most-excited to what Manuel Simpson of EyeManuel, and owner Nicole Stephenson, have done with the Valhalla property. Such tours are headquartered in Old Town, which provides you with easy access to shops, eateries, and other activities, in between tours. Once you finish your day, check out Farm Station Café of Vint Hill, by the incomparable À la Carte.

Leisure at L’Auberge
If you’re looking for a relaxing countryside getaway to commemorate your trip, let your final destination be L’Auberge Provençale, perfectly-situated in White Post. Take advantage of their own manicured gardens, historic rooms, or gourmet picnics. Situated on the outskirt of Hunt Country, away from the bustling towns, you’ll fall in love with L’Auberge as much as we have.

Happy Birthday Scottish actress Simone Lahbib.
Born as Simone Nicole Jean Lahbib Ould Cheikl ,1965 in Stirling to a Scots mother and French Algerian father, she received her acting training at Queen Margaret College in Edinburgh after four years at The Manor School of Ballet in Edinburgh.
One of her first performances was playing the part of Cathy in Wuthering Heights in rep at the Brunton Theatre in Musselburgh. Simone’s first big role was in the film The Girl in the Picture which also starred Scottish stalwarts John Gordon Sinclair, Gregor Fisher and Rikki Fulton, she has went on to star in many quality TV shows including Thief Takers, Taggart (twice), Monarch of the Glen, and perhaps her most famous role as Wing Governor of G-Wing in the prison drama, Bad Girls.
I have to mention I never watched Bad Girls and know Simone better for the brilliant Wire in the Blood where she played D.I. Alex Fielding. In 2017 we saw her on our screens in the powerful thriller The Loch, she also appeared in the the equally tense drama A Confession in 2019.
Lahbib married British-Italian actor Raffaello Degruttola in 2003 in her hometown of Stirling they have a daughter, Skye.
In 2010, she established the Eilidh Brown Memorial Fund in honour of her niece who died of cancer on 25th March 2010, nine days before her 16th birthday. The charity fund benefits children with cancer and their families. Simone was honoured as the Stirling Highland Games Chieftain in 2018. We last saw Simone in an episode of the crime drama Vera, in January this year.

3 Historic East Coast Wedding Venues to Consider for Your Big Day
BY SARAH DAWSON February 20, 2020
The Duke Mansion. Photography by Lauren Roseneau Photography.
Many factors come into play when choosing a wedding day, from location to size to style to sentimentality. And while some couples gravitate toward sleek, modern venues, others may be more drawn to a locale with a bit of history. For those who are considering making their wedding location their “something old,” we’ve rounded up three historic wedding venues on the East Coast that will serve as the ideal backdrop for the special occasion.
THE DUKE MANSION // CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA
The Duke Mansion. Photography by Kristin Byrum Photography.
The background: The Duke Mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is operated as a nonprofit with all proceeds being used to preserve and protect this community treasure. Built in 1915, North Carolina entrepreneur James B. “Buck” Duke purchased the home in 1919, later founding Duke Energy and Duke University. Upon his death in 1926, the home passed from family member to family member and eventually landed in the hands of some of the Charlotte community’s most prominent philanthropic families. The Mansion currently operates as a four diamond inn, meeting, and event space.
Fun historical facts: The Cannons, a wealthy textile family, lived in the house in the 1950s. Their daughter, a true southern belle, fell in love with a Yankee Catholic, and the strong Baptist family just couldn’t stand for the partnership, so they sent her away on a cruise hoping she’d fall in love with someone else. Indeed, she did fall in love with John Hershey, and when she later married him at her family home, she invited that ex-boyfriend to attend. To this day, her ex, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, is one of the most famous guests to have attended a wedding there.
What makes it an ideal wedding locale: The Duke Mansion is a sought-after venue not only for its history, but for the lovely indoor/outdoor aspect of the property. With four and a half acres of stunning gardens, and 27 garden rooms, it’s truly an urban oasis. When couples rent the property for the wedding, they gain possession of all 20 guest rooms on Friday and Saturday nights, and it truly feels as if you are hosting the wedding at your personal home. An on-site executive chef and culinary team that includes a horticulturist customize the hyper-local southern menu for guests, with an organic garden full of heirloom tomatoes, beans, kale, and cabbages adding to the offerings.
GLEN GORDON MANOR // HUNTLY, VIRGINIA
Glen Gordon Manor. Photography by Jumping Rocks.
The background: Glen Gordon Manor traces its hospitality roots back to the 1860s when it was a Wells Fargo stagecoach stop. The main house brims with nostalgic spaces, including a fire-lit entrance hall, baronial oak hunt room, stone wine cellar, and a charming country kitchen. Located just one hour from Washington, D.C., and major airports, the Manor feels a world away in its gorgeous hunt country setting.
Fun historical facts: Fans of The Crown will appreciate that the Manor has housed British Royalty. King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson, infamously known for their scandalous romance, once visited when the historic estate served as a hunting retreat for the royal family. Their stay allowed their romance to blossom, and they became the namesake for the Manor’s luxurious suites. Earlier in its history, during the Civil War, Union troops marched right in front of the Manor, and guests can tour many historic Civil War sights in the area during their stay.
What makes it an ideal wedding locale: With breathtaking views of the Shenandoah mountains and surrounding valleys, this intimate yet spacious manor home is the perfect spot for a hunt country wedding. Prior to the big event, the wedding party can enjoy the on-site spa, and wedding couples have the run of the entire property for their wedding, with the ability to host guests for an intimate gathering fireside in the Hunt Room or outdoors for a larger, tented reception. The meal is sure to be memorable as well, as award-winning chef/owner Dayn Smith customizes the reception menu to the bride and groom’s specifications.
FOXFIRE // MONKTON, MARYLAND
Foxfire. Photograph courtesy of Foxfire.
The background: A luxurious private estate, Foxfire is situated in a historic area of Monkton, Maryland, known as My Lady’s Manor, which was established more than 300 years ago when Lord Baltimore gave the land to his wife as a gift. Foxfire itself was built in 1932, and has since been regarded as a renowned horse racing and breeding farm. With its close proximity to Washington D.C., and New York City, it’s also served as a retreat for tastemakers and high society over the years.
Fun historical facts: The original 1930 Vulcan stove was built to last—it still has pride of place in the kitchen, and works like a dream. In addition, the estate is home to a long line of renowned racehorses that were bred and raised on the grounds.
What makes it an ideal wedding locale: Foxfire limits large events to four times a year, so if you’re seeking an exclusive venue, it fits the bill. Every detail on the grounds, as well as indoors, had been thoughtfully designed to enhance the guest’s experience and surround them in a luxurious yet approachable setting. The property impresses from get-go—ancient maples line the quarter-mile driveway, along which visitors will pass a duck pond, a quarry, barns, paddocks, and pastures with grazing horses as they make their way to the main house. During the winter, the quarries on the property can freeze and have long provided opportunities for outdoor ice skating. The pristine countryside and crisp exterior of the Manor House offers the perfect backdrop to endless design palettes, whether you wish to highlight the historic estate or focus your event concept on a different source of inspiration. Couples can also opt to rent the property for the entire weekend and host up to 21 guests onsite (events can accommodate up to 300 people), along with a full range of events beyond their wedding, including a welcome reception, rehearsal dinner, or a Sunday brunch.

The Trixie Belden Mystery Series/Trixie Belden Fan Club ad - Pink Panther 47 Gold Key comics October 1977 17 - The Mystery of the Uninvited Guest 18 - The Mystery of the Phantom Grasshopper - Trixie and her friends investigate the disappearance of a beloved weather vane in Sleepyside. 19 - The Mystery of the Unseen Treasure Trixie Belden is the title character in a series of "girl detective" mysteries written between 1948 and 1986. The first six books were written by Julie Campbell Tatham, who also wrote the Ginny Gordon series, then continued by various in-house writers from Western Publishing under the pseudonym Kathryn Kenny. Today the rights to the series are owned by Random House. Beatrix "Trixie" Belden is a young teen living just outside the fictional town of Sleepyside-on-Hudson, in the Hudson Valley area of New York. She lives at Crabapple Farm, which had been in her family for either three or six generations, with her parents and three brothers, Brian, Mart, and Bobby. The first book establishes her friendship with lonely, sheltered rich girl Honey Wheeler, whose family has just moved into the Manor House next door and soon the girls are embroiled in their first case. Throughout the series, the two girls solve mysteries that baffled authorities and, along with brothers and friends, form a club called the Bob-Whites of the Glen, have adventures, travel (though not as extensively as Nancy Drew, an older and more sophisticated girl sleuth), and struggle with school. Trixie has particular difficulties with math. Highflier O'Leary, The Queen, 'Fergie', Liz Hurley and Rolling Stones Ronnie Wood add rock 'n roll to Cheltenham
THE Cheltenham Festival 2019 during March 12-15 is set to feature the top National Hunt horses - along with a plethora of celebrities - famous names who own and breed racehorses, including The Queen. Sir Alex Ferguson, former Manchester United manager who used to own a share in Rock of Gibraltar, who ran in the colours of the Red Devils, will be in attendance at Cheltenham, being part-owner of Clan Des Obeaux, a leading candidate in the Gold Cup. Morning tv celebrity Jeremy Kyle is one of the backers behind eight year old Glen Rocco. Liz Hurley's involvement in racehorse ownership was being part of the Highclere Thoroughbred Racing group. One of the horses Hurley part-owned, Albany Stakes-winner Memory, reportedly ended up being sold to Queen Elizabeth II for £500,000 in 2011. The Queen has reportedly earned over £7m in winnings from her stake in racehorses, having inherited horses when her father King George VI died in 1952. The Monarch also owns those raised at the Royal Stud in Sandringham. The Queen is a patron of the Jockey Club, the organisation that owns the Cheltenham Festival. Former Liverpool, Real Madrid, Manchester United and England footballer Michael Owen has taken out a trainers licence since hanging up his boots. Owen's Brown Panther was the first horse from his Manor House stables to secure a Group I victory, winning the Irish St. Leger in 2014. Owen's ex-England and United teammate Wayne Rooney part-owned Yourartisonfire, Pippy, Tomway and Switcharooney. And racing has some rock and roll in the Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood, who runs a breeding farm Sandymount House in Ireland, where he has bred several winners at The Curragh. Former Countdown host Carol Vorderman and ex-Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond have recently become part-owners of Subway Surf. Ryanair chief Michael O'Leary, 57, who is sponsoring The Ryanair Chase at the Cheltenham festival, was the winning owner of Road To Respect at Cheltenham in 2017. O'Leary, reportedly worth $1.3billion, has the Gigginstown Horse Stud, county Westmeath, Ireland, and has a plethora of horses with trainer Gordon Elliott. "He's a genius at what he does," said O'Leary, who won the Gold Cup at Cheltenham in 2006 with War of Attrition, and Don Cossack in 2016. O'Leary also has two Aintree Grand National winners under his belt in Rule the World (2016) and Tiger Roll (2018). *Eyebrows have been raised with Gold Cup entry Presenting Percy, attempting to become only the second horse after Easter Hero - 90 years ago - to land the Gold Cup without having run over fences in the same season. Jockey Davy Russell said: "I'm happy and I'll be going into the race like he's had ten runs. "He'll be fit and I'll ride him the way I usually do. If he's good enough, he's good enough, and if he's not, he's not." Gold Cup betting: Presenting Percy 7-2; Clan Des Obeaux 9-2; 2018 Gold Cup winner Native River, 6-1.

Happy 56th Birthday Scottish actress Simone Lahbib.
Simone's first big role was in the film The Girl in the Picture which also starred Scottish stalwarts John Gordon Sinclair, Gregor Fisher and Rikki Fulton, she has went on to star in many quality TV shows including Thief Takers, Taggart (twice), Monarch of the Glen, and perhaps her most famous role as Wing Governor of G-Wing in the prison drama, Bad Girls.
Lately Simone has been appearing in the BBC Soap Eatenders.

A Scouted Road Trip Through Hunt Country: Sperryville, Washington, Flint Hill & Huntly
We’ve continued our Scouted Road Trip to the outskirts of Hunt Country. A farther drive south, down a few scenic and winding backroads, we find ourselves in the quaint town of Sperryville.
Au Naturale
Start your morning in Sperryville with a shopping spree at Wild Roots Apothecary. With everything from herbal tonics to massage oils, and seasonal bitters to botanical syrups, Scouted business owner and herbalist Colleen O’Bryant has everything you’ll need to boost your immune system, improve your beauty regimen, and defend against ailments of all kinds.
Herbs from the apothecary’s grounds.
Some of our favorite goods from Wild Roots include their elderberry syrup and green matter facial mask, which is perfect for purifying and healing our skin. Colleen’s past herbal recommendations also have been featured frequently in our national blog.
Welcome to Wild Roots!
After your workshop, stop in at local favorites like Copper Fox Distillery or Pen Druid Brewery for tours, drinks, and outdoor seating. Other must visits in Sperryville include Haley Fine Art and Happy Camper.
August Georges owner Deborah Winsor for our Vol. 8.
Historic & Halcyon
Once you’ve stocked up on your all-natural remedies and self-care necessities, take a quick drive to the historic town of Little Washington. Founded in 1795, the town has a rich history in Hunt Country, boasting small inns and taverns, historic private estates, and countless quaint shops. Of these, however, perhaps our favorite stop is August Georges. Although the shop is temporarily closed, they are accepting private appointments. Contact them to set-up a shopping appointment or to check for open hours.
Explore August Georges’ store for stunning additions to your home.
With artfully-curated pieces, business owner Deborah Winsor’s shop is truly something to be experienced. Combining rustic and modern style, August Georges has everything you need to upgrade your home’s aesthetic and comfort, from luxurious bedding to one-of-a-kind antique finds.
The Inn at Little Washington is a must-see.
If you’re staying in town for dinner, we’d suggest making a reservation in advance to the iconic Inn at Little Washington. A standout of Rappahannock, the Inn welcomes guests from far and near to experience the upscale charm of the town.
The Blue Door Kitchen & Inn.
A Flint Hill Find
If you’re looking for a casual upscale dining experience in the country, we’d suggest a short drive to The Blue Door Kitchen & Inn for dinner, nestled in the picturesque town of Flint Hill. Serving only the best of local cuisine, The Blue Door’s Chef Andrea has partnered with local markets and farms to bring his guests only the freshest seasonal ingredients. For a heartier meal, we’d recommend the New Zealand rack of lamb. For lighter fare, you can’t go wrong with their traditional beef tenderloin carpaccio or oven-roasted local baby carrots. The kitchen currently is open for outdoor seating, so be sure to make your reservation ahead of time here.
A beautifully-appointed room at Glen Gordon. Photo courtesy of Jumping Rocks.
Some Well-Deserved R&R
Round out your long day of road-tripping with a scenic drive to Huntly, with a night or weekend’s stay at Glen Gordon Manor. Drop your bags in a lavishly-appointed suite, and indulge in one of the manor’s extensive packages. We’d recommend the Epicurean Package; pop open a bottle of wine and snack on a savory cheeseboard while you wait for dinner and watch the sun set over the Shenandoah Ridgeline.
Chef and owner Dayn Smith prepares dinner in the Houndstooth Restaurant. Photo courtesy of Jumping Rocks.
Even if you’re not staying at Glen Gordon, you can still enjoy the best of local cuisine by making a reservation in advance for their Houndstooth Restaurant. Culinary artist Dayn Smith provides a world-class dining experience to each of his guests, so you can’t go wrong with anything on the prix fixe menu. Should you stay the night, we’d recommend checking out the manor’s extensive, award-winning wine list. Guests can rest assured that the manor has enacted extensive safety protocols both for your stay and dining experiences. You may read through them here.
Unwinding in this luxurious ensuite after a long day of sight-seeing? Sounds like a plan!
