In high school, I did everything I could not to take my shirt off in front of other people. Like, I don't think I showered once after gym class. Now, though, thanks to a little more working out, a little more protein, my outside self is catching up to my inside self.

GLEE S05E16 Tested

I know a lot of Klaine fans love the episode 5x16, but I sometimes struggle to enjoy it, mainly because of all the negative Blaine comments around it. It was great for Kurt to be recognised and showed how far he had come from S2 in terms of confidence. But I think the episode created some negative discourse comparing them. Can’t they both be handsome and talented? Why do you think Klaine fans enjoy this episode so much?

I can't speak for all Klaine fans. I do know there are a chunk of people who are like you and don't like the episode. It is a messy episode. The writing of it could have been so much stronger, there are a lot of elements that we have to infer and pick apart - and you shouldn't have to always do that with your fiction, it's not an episode that is self contained but relies on everything before it and isn't resolved within the episode, and it fuel the never ending Kurt v Blaine shenanigans.

That all said, it's in my top ten favorite episodes.

I think the show was trying to dig into issues that end up popping up in relationships -- where there's a tendency to judge yourself against your partner. And how to reconcile having your own self doubts and your own self criticisms with understanding that someone else can still love you despite your flaws.

I love the episode for what it tells about Kurt and Blaine. Who they are as people -- as these imperfect people in a relationship they're both trying to figure out as they navigate into adulthood.

There is a /lot/ going on with Blaine. A lot. And he's struggling to figure out who he is, and who he is when he can't be the person that everyone expects him to be, and when he can't be the person he thinks he should be for Kurt. He's downward spiraling and it's messy and dark and that's okay? I love Blaine all the more for it.

And on the flip side, Kurt may have some more confidence around his body, sure, but there is so much insecurity there still, too. Kurt can be the most built and handsome looking man, but when Blaine pulls away physically - emotionally Kurt becomes a mess.

The whole episode is called /tested/ because they are being tested in their relationship.

And it's about loving each other despite the feelings of personal doubt.

Also, it has one of my favorite moments on the show:

This is the realest moment -- where Blaine just lies it out there, that if he can't be who he thinks he should be then what is he? And Kurt's like fuck that - I love /you/ as you are for you forever and always even when I'm gonna be an idiot and screw it up again. I. Love. You. The end.

continuing with my ongoing interpretation that almost all the songs are in some way about two relationships rather than certain songs being about one or the other. it's kind of fascinating to think about how she describes one relationship as too dead to do cpr on it and the other was so intense that even after it ended it feels like the walking dead. and it's easy to be confused by this, how can a relationship that lasted months at the most in any way compare to 6 years with someone, right? the image of the fortnight mv electroshock therapy scene comes to mind. it's almost like she had to go through the latter heartbreak in order to be able to feel the one before it, like shocking herself into a response.
