Repeat performance. I tried some of my favorite tenmoku combos on second pieces. Quite a bit of variation on the first, maybe not so surprising since the second glaze can be variable. The second combo was pretty consistent, as was the third, though I think glaze thickness might matter. This red glaze intrigues me...... over a white glaze it disappears, same with the blue grey, but with tenmoku which stains everything within a 10 mile radius, it’s fine! Keep experimenting, that’s the answer....I think.

#throwbackthursday has me thinking about past experiments with the way glaze flows. In 2020 this piece was fired on its side, and the resulting puddle of crystalline glaze was ground down to reveal what is inside. All my sketches and notes this month have been about changing the way the glaze moves in the kiln - and there have been so many sketches! This bowl had a kind of cat-tiger design but I forgot about it in my cabinet and the wax resist began to peel.

...So I had the opportunity to try out a more distressed look. Dipping the peeling wax into the white and encouraging the wax and topcoat of glaze to peel by running the whole under a tap.

I really like it, especially how my black came through. It is so thin on some places as to become a satin brown, and varies through to a high gloss blue-black. You can see where the tin white flakes fell into the bowl.

Somehow the whole thing is still sealed perfectly.
