It didn’t take long at all for these two to get used to each other. They were chilling like this within a day of living together. They share a 40 gallon acrylic tank with dimensions 36" x 18" x 13" from GlassCages (who aren’t sponsoring this or anything but I had a great and easy experience ordering from them).

They have a water chiller to keep them cool, as axolotls prefer a range that is typically less than room temperature. There is also a gentle filter with a spray bar to provide minimal current. Too much water motion can stress these little guys out, and we want them to be comfortable and happy, duh.

The substrate of the tank is fine sand. I had Buddy alone when I first got him and used a larger grain sand. It probably would have been fine going forward, but I chose a fine sand for their bigger home.

Axolotls have big mouths. The better to eat… Just about everything with. They eat by snapping their mouths open and sucking in whatever is in front of their faces. Substrate included. That’s why it’s best to go with something that won’t wreak havoc on their digestive system and harm them. Pebbles, gravel, etc. can cause problems up to and including death. Some people have bare bottom tanks, but these little guys do like to walk along the floor, digging their adorable little digits in the substrate. Bare glass/acrylic bottoms won’t provide any traction, and some owners believe that might cause stress.

These two have a lot of room to explore, play, and hide out if they want. There’s also unobstructed space where they can swim the full length of the tank, which they like to do at night when they’re more active. I could definitely increase the population slightly and they’d still all be comfortable. More on new axies later.

I have a lot of town names listed too, and some villager lists to go with some of them, but I haven’t quite conceptualized any landscaping yet so I’m not counting them fully as plans.
