I have wallpapered my heart out, overthought the room layout and furniture choices, and arranged my grocery store flowers just so when the florist I wanted to buy from was unexpectedly closed. Yes my friends, it is One Room Challenge reveal time, and I’m ready!
I work from home (on this very blog you are reading!), I wanted a beautiful office to call my own. I’m doing more design work these days, for myself and for others, and it seemed silly that we’ve been here as long as we have (four years!) and I had yet to dedicate myself to an office proper.
Shall we start with the desk? The exact place I’m sitting at right now as I type this post?
The chair! She’s so pretty! I always keep a blanket draped over the arm in case I’m cold. Sometimes I’ll keep the pillow on the chair and sometimes not, depending on what I’m doing and how mindful I’m being of my posture.
The desk is 5′ wide, so I have plenty of space for both my full-sized keyboard (I like having a number pad — probably a holdover from entering ISBNs all day for years) and my Wacom tablet. I started using a tablet years ago for art, but now I use it every day. I have problems with my wrists, and using a tablet instead of a mouse has been tremendously helpful.
The oversized lamp was a risk with my sloped ceiling, but I knew it would fit. (Thanks, 3D rendering to scale!) The vase hits that sweet spot between reverential and whimsical, and then the snake is just awesome.
I took various photos with doors open and with doors closed, because I wasn’t sure which way everything would photograph best. Are you digging my mannequins in the stairway?
I hung a few prints and paintings on the angled wall to my left. The vintage portrait is from the 30s and I bought her for the library, but I’m stealing her for here. At least for now.
The desk has five drawers, and to my right is a long, low storage unit made of modular craft room furniture.
The shallow drawers in the hutch are handy for corralling both personal and client design work — paint swatches, fabric and wallpaper options, that sort of thing. I suppose it won’t be as neat when I’m juggling more than four projects at a time, but I’ve also got the shelf area above the drawers and the entire surface to spread things out on.
I also have additional storage space in the closet, aka The Rainbow Room.
Someone in the comments of a previous ORC update suggested calling it The Aviary. I’m into it, but it was a quick ‘no’ from the kids. The Rainbow Room, it is. I think I’ll pick up a sheepskin or some floor pillows for them. They want to play and hang on in there, and I can’t blame them! I was always a special space, even though it’s really just a closet, and now the wallpaper makes it magical.
I have four walnut shelves from Article, but I photographed the space with only two in so that you could better see the wallpaper. The shelves are lovely and sturdy, and the shelves are already filling with fabric swatches, paint fan decks, equipment, and a nice stack of press (magazines and newspaper articles I’ve been in over the years).
The light was just a bare bulb in a socket before, so while that little number you see peeking out below is nothing amazing, it’s certainly an improvement over what was there. I bought an inexpensive light with a pull chain, and picked up a white globe to replace the ribbed glass shade that came with the base.
I did a ramshackle decoupage technique (cool/terrible band name alert!) where the two halves of the wallpaper met in the center. The seam would have been pretty noticeable and I had assumed I would be adding a piece of trim, but I ended up trimming around birds and leaves, overlapping the different sides so that the pattern blended together. I wasn’t sure if it was a brilliant or stupid idea, but I think it worked!
I like the wallpaper peeking out when I have the door open.
The marble dining table is already proving useful (and beautiful).
Also, I want to point something out here with the lighting fixture. It is wired in — I took down a ceiling fan and replaced it with this — and I wanted it centered over the table. I’m not one to heavily Photoshop, but I have edited out the chandelier chain and cord where I swagged it over from the junction box. Honestly, it was so distracting to my eye, and I plan on relocating the junction so that I no longer have to suspend it from a hook. I’m not trying to fool anyone and maybe you wouldn’t have even noticed had I not said anything, but I felt a little funny resorting to digital trickery because it’s not something I do. So if you happen to notice that the light seems to be suspended from nothing, that’s why.
The table serves as a desk, a project planning surface, a spot for the kids to hang out, and an alternative to my dining room for tabletop shoots. I knew I didn’t want another wood surface in the office since the desk and storage were already representing that category quite well. I’m not a big fan of glass tops, so that sent me looking at painted or lacquered tops, or stone. The parsons shape of the table I chose is classic, and the combination of marble and brass is perfect. Green chairs in a streamlined mod shape bring a little more fun to the grouping.
Hey there, traditional but cool blue and white planter. And hey there, cool convex mirror that I grabbed from another room! Hate that the pendant is just hanging there in the reflection, but whatevs, we’ve discussed this. Moving on!
I bought these vintage slipper chairs for my first go at the One Room Challenge. I only used one, but when you find a pair, you buy (and hoard) the pair. And lo, I found the perfect spot for them!
The little side table between them is dainty in form, but sturdy. It’s a nice spot to take a quick break and look through a design book or some magazines with a cup of coffee. And how amazing are those sconces?
I wanted sconces that could plug in, which these do, and they also have a beautiful brass toggle switch and pretty French gray fabric cording.
I’ve recently created a “Shop Our House” page, and you’ll find sources for everything there, including paint colors and links to the exact items I’ve used. The Home Office section is new and I will continue to populate it today. You can also take a look at the design plan from week 2.
Thank you so much for following along again for this edition of the One Room Challenge. I’m thrilled with the way the space turned out, and I hope you enjoyed watching the process as much as I loved bringing the design to life!

Thanksgiving Tablescapes
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thanksgiving is coming up and regardless of the fact that I'm not hosting, my eye is all over the tablescape game. So I started shopping and pinning and created a few fantasy tablescapes that I figured I could at least pass on to those of you who might be hosting. I almost threw a friendsgiving this year just to have an excuse to play with flatware but then I realized that we are leaving on Saturday for a week and once again I didn't prepare or invite anyone. *True story – I swore for 6 weeks that I was going to have a halloween party and then forgot to schedule, plan or invite anyone, so the Sunday before we had a last minute thing that was also Birdie's birthday party (because we were gone for her birthday and kinda forgot about that as well … look she's only 2). So my track record for executing parties isn't good.
Tumblr media

The above tablescape is one we did with Parachute and the below are just some that I LOVE. They feel warm and modern, but totally inviting and yet not too fussy or too much “work”.

Generally for the centerpiece I like to have just a few elements, then repeat them down the table – usually including flowers or garland (the simpler/easier the better) and candles. Repetition in pieces creates impact and keeps it simple and easy for you. Don't get me wrong, I love a collection of eclectic vessels but if you are starting from scratch it's a lot easier to execute a cohesive table if you have your pieces the same (aka matching plates, matching flatware, matching glassware). The “collected” look is a lot harder and more expensive to execute than it looks, but when done right is very exciting.

The simplicity in the tablescape below is certainly powerful, right? Dark and moody, with matching napkins and tablecloth and then warm wood chairs and floor.

I started pinning any tabletop item that I LOVED regardless of budget. This generally helps me figure out the vibe and helps lead me into the direction that I want to go. Then if I were actually to execute it, I might look for less expensive versions, unless it was something that I could use on a daily basis and it made my heart super happy.
I thought I was just pinning for one board, but then I looked it all together and there was definitely enough for a few different looks (including flowers and centerpiece ideas). So in case you are still in the planning stages, here are three Thanksgiving tablescapes that I personally think can work year round, for any occasion with seasonal flowers (thus letting you rationalize the splurges :)).
First one is 'Modern Homespun' which is certainly of the moment, but is such because it's both old world and warm yet new and fresh.
Tumblr media
1. Prosecco Glasses | 2. Moscow Mule Cup | 3. Large Cut Rimmed Pitcher | 4. Gold Drinking Glass | 5. Dried Yarrow Bunch | 6. Dried Banksia Bunch | 7. Faux Crimson Amaranth Spray | 8. Preserved Fern Bunch | 9. Dried Lagurus Bunch | 10. Cream Dinner Plate | 11. Black Salad Plate | 12. Terrcotta Bowl | 13. Place Card | 14. Place Card Holder | 15. Table Cloth | 16. Amber Bud Vases | 17. Italian Stainless Steel Flatware Set | 18. Blue Linen Napkins | 19. Wooden Napkin Rings | 20. Terracotta Taper Candles | 21. Black Candlesticks | 22. Walnut Serving Set | 23. Grey Wooden Large Bowl | 24. Gravy Boat | 25. Wooden Footed Tray | 26. Oval Pewter Platter | 27. Carving Set | 28. Mug | 29. French Press | 30. Sugar Bowl | 31. Iron Pie Pan | 32. Black Walnut Pie Server | 33. Walnut Spoon | 34. Blue Stipe Bowl | 35. Wooden Oval Serving Tray | 36. Striped Pot Holder | 37. Staub Cast Iron French Oven
I LOVE the combination of the dark burgundy with the black, amber and wood. And creating a dried grass/flower centerpiece is seasonal and very affordable (many wholesale flower markets, and even Michaels or Moskatels will have good versions that fit the bill). Just make sure that your vessels are small-mouthed (like the amber jars up there).
This next look was the one that I initially started with – casual, simple but warm modern Scandinavian farmhouse. Classic/traditional elements (like the candlesticks and basket) with more simple/scandy shapes, too. As you know I have been to Target probably 12 times the last couple weeks and the Hearth and Hand collection by Chip and Joanna Gaines is so great for this look. I wanted all of it, and if I were hosting a Thanksgiving this is probably what I would get – both in look and in price. It's seriously good stuff that looks expensive, but is absolutely affordable.
Tumblr media
1. Tulip Wine Glasses | 2. Green Glass | 3. Place Card | 4. Wood House Place Card Holder | 5. Glass Pitcher | 6. Inspiration Photo Source | 7. Green Plate | 8. X Pattern Small Plate | 9. Individual Casseroles | 10. Placemat | 11. Fringed Napkins | 12. Matte Black Flatware | 13. White Taper Candles | 14. Vintage Black Candlestick Holders | 15. Oversized Platter | 16. Gravy Boat | 17. Carving Set | 18. Bread Basket | 19. Tea Towel | 20. Modern Cake Stand | 21. Pie Server | 22. Electric Kettle | 23. Enamel Mug | 24. Serving Platter | 25. Wooden Serving Board | 26. Creamer and Sugar Set | 27. Brass Serving Set | 28. Cast Iron Dutch Oven
This last one is a little brighter, perfect for those of you/us in a warmer/southern climate. It was inspired by those amazing oval rose placemats. It's a bit more delicate and sweet, but the addition of that indigo and blue helps keeps it balanced. I particularly love the battery operated LED fairy lights (of which I have a ton in my house right now) because they give such good light and you can hide the battery in the garland (if it's thick enough). Eucalyptus should be in season at higher end supermarkets (Whole Foods) and you don't even have to wire them together to create a garland, just lay them down the center and add the candles (for height) and string lights (for a whimsical ambience).
Tumblr media
1. Ribbed Glasses | 2. Wine Glass | 3. Pitcher | 4. Lilac Glass | 5. Inspiration Photo Source | 6. String Lights | 7. Dinner Plate | 8. Butter Dish | 9. Placemat | 10. Swedish Blue Rosemaling Plates | 11. Pink Bowl | 12. Vintage Flatware | 13. Striped Napkins | 14. Blue Tapered Candles | 15. Vintage-Inspired Candlesticks | 16. Table Runner | 17. Place Card Holder | 18. Place Card | 19. Gravy Boat | 20. Platter | 21. Carving Set | 22. Blush Porcelain Ice Cream Cone | 23. Brass Ice Cream Scoop | 24. Vintage French Wood Boards | 25. Mist Platter | 26. Pewter Slotted Spoon | 27. Staub White Cocotte | 28. Pink Platter | 29. Lotus Platter | 30. Vintage Fork
The blue floral plates make it feel more special and traditional. Then the vintage/antique flatware gives it some old-world heft and grounds it a bit.
Which one would you do or better yet, which style would you want to be a guest at? I honestly can't decide, but it's making me want to throw a dinner party now (although secretly I LOVE that it's not my responsibility at Thanksgiving and what we do in Sacramento feels like home because it's warm and every piece of decor has become part of the tradition). It truly doesn't matter how much you spend or what you use as your centerpiece. We use candles, flowers and cornucopias on white tablecloth, antique silverware and white dishes at Brian's parents and it's perfect. But if you were looking for some new ideas or to start your own traditions, I hope these ideas helped. xx

Serving Canapes As well as Canape Recipes
May has been frustrated at the EU refusal to sign off on a fast package to state the 4 thousand expats on either edge of a brand-new UK-EU boundary shouldn't worry about staying. There were actually some really gorgeous outdated treasures spread with the novelties, enjoy this aged cylinder cupboard. Dinner was actually primarily more busy over lunch time (15 respondents or 56%) and also lunch was actually cited as busiest through 12 respondents or even 44%. When this came to be the 1st commercial settlement in the area, the record from Old Sacramento days back to 1839. The upgraded Exploration Target estimate is actually based upon air-core drilling accomplished by Potash West in between 2011 and also 2015 and the improved Mineral Source quote. The unaudited pro forma compressed mixed financial details (the monetary details") shown within this release illustrates the approximated results of the merger (the 2015 Merger") consummated on July 2, 2015 from Kraft Foods Group, Inc Each exists on a qualified graphic which you might print to offer to each supper guest. Listed here's just how you may tell if your hosting server has been appropriately qualified: A really good web server will keep in mind if any person is actually wearing dark attire and use a dark paper napkin in lieu of a white colored one so as certainly not to place any visible lint. Never ever compromise on your comfort as well as ease while purchasing your testing supper dress up. Practice session supper is actually all about arriving at loved ones along with engaging along with website visitors. Covered molded like Angus, Merida's black horse - although dark icing can do a number on your teeth! Incredibly hardly ever an older heritage will certainly contribute to this exactly what is gotten in touch with the Trou Normand" which is actually a try glass of Calvados between EACH course. Dinner: salad with broad beans, apples, red pepper, dill, professional along with olive oil and also lemon juice. Although this is not a significant variable, this is actually still very outstanding: when Americans do their own cooking food, the normal cost from a Thanksgiving dinner to nourish 10 people costs about $49.20 - that is actually lower than $5 per person! The thicker the stuffing, the extra the adornment sits on best from clergy" which was actually an old standard for discussion. In gym-sport-Fit.Info some cases the conventional supper can come to be way too much and also that could feel like it's the all the same outdated factor each year. There is actually terrific new in the outlet and all top for condiment for a mouth watering Tex-Mex encouraged supper. Other kitchenware offered - racks, foods, tabletops, supper collections, cups, water filters, jugs, etc - been available in vivid layouts. Old sheds could be a great resource of beneficial lumber, some off defines no longer readily available, like the American Chestnut.

Can Shower Door Glasses be Replaced if Broke? How?
The shower door is an incredible method to redesign your washroom without any dramatic cost. Here we going to start below:
Tumblr media
The cost would be:
The expense of having another shower installed will only dependent on various elements, including the size of the glass and door, work costs in your general vicinity, the materials, and glass finish you pick.
Time Taken:
Shower doors are customized for your space, so having another one arranged, created, and conveyed could take as long as 3 weeks. In any case, the genuine establishment of your new shower door can be finished by our expert installers in 2–3 hours. On the other hand, if your shower framework is intricate, the establishment could take longer. Timing for shower door install might be talked about during a free in-home conference.
Picking the Right Option:
Whether you should fix your current shower door or totally supplant it relies upon the age of our shower door, your preference, and the exhortation of the glass expert doing the inspection or establishment. By thinking about these components, you can choose which alternative will give the best outcomes for you and your washroom.

I have the design for the office to share with you this week! First up, let’s talk layout.
Look how fancy I am! Marvel at that rudimentary animation! I made it myself, and yes, everything is to scale. I’ve leveled up a little with SketchUp and it’s no longer the frustrating exercise it once was to create custom furniture. I even made the lamp on the desk! YAY FOR NEW SKILLS.
Anyway, I have still images too, which are probably more helpful in discussing the space.
The room is all angles, so the layout was a little challenging, but I took advantage of the one long wall by lining it with 7’ of modular storage. The ceiling height is limiting, so to avoid everything being at the same height, I added a hutch atop the cabinets.
Floating in the middle of the room will be a brass and marble dining table. It gives me extra space to spread out while planning big projects, but it’s also a secondary desk, a homework spot (the kids like to hang out up there with me), and an alternate location for tabletop shoots. There will be four modern green chairs for everyday use, but the table can seat six.
Next, the placement of the desk and chairs. This is controversial?
They can be flip-flopped, and in theory a desk in front of the windows sounds lovely. In reality though, the sun can be super bright there for a good portion of the day and I think it would hurt my eyes to be staring at a backlit screen (and I don’t want to draw the curtains all the time). I also have a window AC there which is very necessary on the third floor of an old house without central air, and I don’t want to sit directly in front of it. And also? I don’t want my back to the room’s main entrance! It feels wrong. My desk has been where it is in the mockups for months now, and I like it. I can also swivel to reach the scanner/printer which I don’t use every single day, but when I do I feel very much in control of my little command center.
Placing the desk in front of the window would make for a pretty picture, but it’s not the right choice for me. The window nook will be beautiful with my pair of vintage chairs centered in it and some amazing sconces on each side.
OK, and the closet. Excuse me, I mean “The Rainbow Room.” My family loves this little space at the very top, very front of the house with its deminue stained glass window. We’re all pretty excited about giving it an update! I’ll be putting up the most amazing wallpaper with vintage-style illustrations of birds and bugs, and then painting the trim a complementary color. Four bookshelves will line the sides giving us tons of storage while keeping a clear view of the window at the end.
I’ve got a design board with the major elements in place to share too.
This board isn’t 100% final, but it’s pretty close. An asterisk denotes items that have been sent by sponsors for inclusion in the room.
Ornithology Wallpaper, Milton & King* Birds and bugs! That illustration style! You guys, this is right up my alley.
Audrey 8″ Sconce, Cedar & Moss* Well these are pretty much perfect, yes? Customizable too. Mine will plug in.
Alexa Hampton Basil Small Brass Pendant, The Mine* Much nicer than the ceiling fan it’s replacing. I’ll be centering the pendant on the marble table.
Globe Table Lamp, West Elm There are less expensive options for a simple globe lamp, but I’m picky about the glass. I didn’t want plastic or anything etched/frosted. Beautiful milk glass all the way.
Benchwright Hutch, Pottery Barn The ceilings have funny angles and I needed something with height. This sits atop my storage cabinets. (Discontinued, but here’s the rest of the collection.)
Martha Stewart Living Craft Storage Console, Home Depot / Home Decorators Modular, so you can build your own storage solution. Alas, I’m only seeing this one in white now.
Martha Stewart Living Craft File Cabinet, Home Depot / Home Decorators More modular goodness, but this one is still available in wood, along with white and black.
Archive Walnut Bookshelves, Article* These have arrived and not only are they sturdy, the walnut is gorgeous.
Freer House Slim Keith Vase, Jill Rosenwald* Little vases painted on a larger vase! Delightful.
Marble and Brass 60×36″ Parsons Table, Crate & Barrel* I cannot wait to start covering this table with walllpaper samples and paint swatches. Perhaps its beauty will inspire me to keep a tidy workspace?
Green Chairs, The Mine* I’ve been looking for more ways to bring in mossy green, and these chairs excellent in that regard. Digging the modern style too.
Vintage Blue Slipper Chairs, Divine Consign I grabbed a pair of these and used only one in my first One Room Challenge, but now they’re reuniting in my office.
Pom Pom Velvet Pillows, West Elm I’ve used these in other rooms, but my pillows like to shuffle around. I think they’ll be happy in the office, at least for a little while.
Kendrick Currey & Co Side Table, Bellacor* This is the cutest side table and I’m sad to say that it’s being discontinued. I was considering this quirky side table too, which is still available.
Pink Curtains, TBD I might steal these from another room, but then that would leave that space naked. Find something else? Pink for every window, everywhere!
Silas Round Convex Mirror, Overstock Another item I might steal from a different room (the snug). But I think I might like it even better in the office.
‘Emerald Beetles’ by Kate Roebuck, Artfully Walls* I had to.
‘Flowers in Vase’ by Ruti Shaashua, Artfully Walls* Great colors and an equally great drawing style.
Paint colors: White Blush, Benjamin Moore; Simply White, Benjamin Moore; Authentic Black, Dutch Boy The second and third floor has white trim and black doors throughout (with just a couple of rooms left to tackle). The pale blush walls are the same as my bedroom — I loved the color that much.
Morris 60″ Desk, Crate & Barrel* Drawers! So many drawers. I’m going to devote one exclusively to novelty toys just because I can.
Minna Vase, Crate & Barrel I picked up four of these a while back. I have three children, and not so coincidentally I suppose, I now also have three of these vases.
Jane Robert Abbey Table Lamp, Bellacor* I’m playing with scale here. This lamp is huge, and it’s going under an angled ceiling. It should work, but until I see it in person I’m crossing my fingers.
Bukhara Ikat Indigo Blue Pillow, Arianna Belle* Oh my do I love this pattern. My desk area needed a little shot of blue.
Liv Upholstered Wingback Office Chair, Crate & Barrel* My number one choice for a desk chair. It’s so dang lovely.I’ve written about it before!
Coziest Rosette Throw, West Elm For chilly days.
Blue and White Planter, The Mine* There are touches of blue and white everywhere, and I’ve been wanting to add a planter like this somewhere in the house. I realized the office is the perfect spot to do so.
Pink Genevieve Gorder Capel Rug An oldie but a goodie. The dusty pink is hard to find in rugs — they’re usually baby pink or much, much brighter.
