Door handles are a vital part of a door as it is used to open and close it. Inktober 2020 #24 - Dig
This comes from the latest incarnation of the very first novel I ever wrote.
When I was 10 I was blown away by a book called “The Girl Who Owned A City”, about a girl my age trying to survive after a plague killed all the adults. This predated the TV/comic series “Jeremiah” by a good bit. The book had a lot of weird shit in it that I now know is libertarian/objectivist bullshit, but at the time I was amazed by it. So, of course, I wrote my own version of the concept, “Below”, which was terrible because I was in 7th grade and in those days, without the Internet, we all sucked when we were young. Then when I was 13, I wanted to enter a contest for teen novel writers, and my mom “helped” me by completely rewriting Below into a totally different, equally terrible work that was terrible in a very different way.
Sometime in my 20s, I started a rewrite, more or less using the plot skeleton of the original but completely rewriting from the ground up, but I only got, like, two chapters into it. In 2017, I picked up the rewrite again, and would probably have gotten farther with it if not for the 2018 cancer diagnosis. One of the things I did was to add an explicitly autistic character as a counterpart to the main character, who, being that she was originally based on me, is an undiagnosed autistic girl who more or less successfully fakes being NT most of the time. Andy Thorn is a boy, does not successfully fake being NT pretty much ever, and was diagnosed as autistic at some point in his life. He’s also anosmic because my older son is and I wanted to explore how not being able to smell might affect a kid in a world without adults, after a plague.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The house was like most of the other houses Andy had visited. One window was smashed, but the front and back doors were still locked, and aside from the broken window, there was no evidence anyone had gone inside. “Stay, boys,” Andy told his dogs. They’d led him here, and he didn’t question their noses, but it was good to get independent corroboration.
He used the stepladder he’d been carrying around in the cart attached to his bicycle to climb up to the broken window. Carefully he reached inside, unlatched the lock on the window, and screwed two clamps to the lower rail of the window sash. With the clamps attached, he was easily able to open the window enough to slide inside without hurting himself on broken glass. The front door was deadbolted, but the deadbolt could be opened with the twist of a knob – it didn’t require a key. Andy opened the door and let his dogs in, and then pulled in his cart.
Clifford and Updog immediately began sniffing around, exploring the house. “Clifford. Find the dead thing. Find dead, Clifford.” Tail wagging, Clifford went in search of dead people. “Updog. Heel.” Updog took the appropriate position. “Good boy. Let’s go.” He followed Clifford, and Updog followed him.
They were in the master bedroom, of course. Two of them this time, two men. Their rotting bodies lay next to each other, as if they had huddled together before the end had come.
Andy was here to make a bargain with them. He didn’t need to talk out loud, because they were dead and couldn’t hear him, and because he knew they wanted what he had to offer. Or would have wanted it, if he had been able to make the deal when they were alive on behalf of when they were dead. The dead wanted to be buried. They didn’t want to rot in the pajamas and nightgowns or sometimes naked in the bedsheets that he found them, bringing maggots and disease to the homes they had loved when they were alive. They wanted to go down in the ground and have a stone to mark where they’d been laid to rest. And they would pay him in the bounties of their home, canned goods and medicines and other things Andy could make use of and that they couldn’t anymore.
Stealing was wrong. Andy didn’t like the looters any more than he liked the gangs. The looters stole from people who weren’t alive any more – generally speaking people who had died in a hospital, far away, because they stayed away from the houses that smelled like death – and the gangs stole from the looters. Stealing was wrong, even if you were doing it to survive, because it was wrong. Wrong things didn’t stop being wrong just because you felt like you had to do them. Andy had found another alternative. He performed a service for the dead, and the dead repaid him.
He found bedsheets in the linen closet. Wearing his gloves, which he never forgot because he hated touching anything because everything had germs on it, Andy wrapped the first body in a bedsheet, and then the second one. They didn’t fall apart too much. The skeletons were strong. Some of the meat had rotted enough to fall away from the bone, but it was stuck in the pajamas so it didn’t fall away from the body, and then it was all wrapped up in the bedsheet. Another bedsheet, he carried out to his cart and lined it, and then pulled the cart to the bedroom.
It was hard for a 10 year old boy to move the dead body of an adult man. It involved a lot of pushing and pulling, and eventually, the body fell off the bed onto the cart. Two dead bodies would be too much to carry, so Andy moved the first one first, going back to the front door. “Don’t worry,” he told the dead man. “Your friend comes next. You won’t be alone.”
Outside, he dug in the dirt. Clifford and Updog helped. They liked to dig. For sanitary reasons a grave should be six feet deep, but Andy wasn’t even six feet tall, and there was no way he could dig that much. He dug down about a foot and a half, wide enough for two bodies to lie next to each other, long enough that they could lay mostly straight without having to curl up a lot. It took hours. Not as long as it had taken the first time he did this, when it was his mom and his dad that he was burying; he was stronger now, even if his hands were sore and calloused from all the digging, but it was still hard and it still took half the day.
When he was done digging, he tumbled the body off his cart and into the shallow grave, and then went back for the second body. That one was dumped into the grave too, lying half on top of the first body. Then Andy started putting the dirt that he’d taken out back on them, forming a mound.
He ate two meals there at the house, while he was digging. The cheese that had gone bad in the fridge was covered with mold, but the mold didn’t go all the way into the hard cheese, so he was able to get it all off with a cheese planer. The bread in the pantry was moldy too, but there was an ancient hard baguette that was too crunchy and tough to have grown any mold. Water still ran from the taps, though the hot water was all gone by now. Hard baguette plus water made softer, more edible baguette, and cheese where he’d cut all the mold off tasted weird but satisfied his hunger. For his second meal he ate cold vegetable soup with milk made from powder, and had a dessert of a can of cherry pie filling.
There wasn’t any dog food in the pantry. They hadn’t had a dog. Most houses Andy visited didn’t have a dog, and the one he did find, the dog had eaten most of the old man’s body, making it very hard to collect all the pieces of the guy to bury them. He’d released the dog; as much as he liked dogs, it was a small yappy dog who barked at him and his dogs a lot and also growled at his dogs, so letting it free to join a wild pack was probably better than making Clifford and Updog jealous or stressed out. Andy did find canned Vienna sausages and canned tuna fish. He liked to eat those things himself, but Clifford and Updog needed meat in their diet; Andy could survive without it as long as he ate things like powdered milk and peanut butter, things with the protein he couldn’t get from most vegetables. So he fed the canned meat to his dogs. It wasn’t very much; they’d need another meal when they all got home.
It was close to evening as he finished shoveling dirt onto the mound. He heard a whistle, and turned. Three boys were standing outside the fence. He was face-blind, so he couldn’t tell from looking at them if he knew them from anywhere. One was a littler kid, maybe seven or eight, but the other two were around his age, 10 or 11 or so. One of the kids his age was white; the other two boys looked like they were from India or Pakistan or something. All three of the boys were wearing hoodies that had some kind of green blob painted on them, that looked as if maybe it was trying to be the same shape each time but whoever had had the can of spray paint wasn’t a good enough artist to be consistent. “Shit, dude,” the white boy said. “Did you just dig a grave for some deads?”
“Yes,” Andy said.
“This your house then? I thought this was the house where the gay guys lived.”
“Is that why they died together?” Andy said.
“Didn’t you know them?” the older brown-skinned boy said. When he talked, Andy recognized him. It was Nish Varma, who’d been in most of his classes with him. “How did you not know they were gay?”
“I didn’t know them,” Andy said. “I looked through all the envelopes in the house to find their names and I wrote them on this rock.” He showed the boys the rock he had written the men’s names on, in crayon because Sharpie markers didn’t stick to rocks as well as crayon did. Andy kept crayons in his pocket for that reason.
“What were you burying them for then?”
“That’s what I do,” Andy said. “I bury the dead. Stealing is wrong so when I need food, I go to houses that have dead people in them, and I bury them. That’s a service, so I take the food they left as a repayment. That’s better than stealing. There’s nothing wrong with bargaining for what you need and working hard to provide a service and getting paid for it.”
The little boy said, “How can you stand how bad it stinks? We don’t go to houses with dead people! There’s flies everywhere and it smells awful!”
“I can’t smell anything,” Andy said.
The white boy said, “Seriously? You can’t smell that? What’s wrong with you?”
“What’s wrong with me is called anosmia,” Andy said. “It means I have no sense of smell. It’s like being blind or deaf except for smell.” He gestured at his dogs. “My dogs here find the dead people houses for me. Dogs don’t mind dead people smells. So I bury the dead bodies. You’re supposed to make graves six feet deep but that takes grownup men a long time to do and ladders so they can get out, so I don’t dig as deep.” Andy had suspected that the main reason the houses he visited were usually untouched and unlooted – at most, a broken window or a jimmied door, but no food taken – was that people with a sense of smell couldn’t stand it, and as long as there were still houses where the owners had died in the hospital and so there were no dead bodies on the premises, other kids weren’t desperate enough to go to the houses of the dead. He knew dead people supposedly smelled bad; he just had no idea what a bad smell was actually like, since he couldn’t smell anything. But this was the first time he’d had it confirmed.
The white boy whistled again. “But still! You can lift dead grownups and you can dig a hole that big? You must be ripped, man.” He leaned on the fence. “Look, me and my dudes here aren’t here to get on your stake and take the food here. I can see you’ve got big dogs, and you look pretty tough.”
That surprised Andy. Most people didn’t think he looked tough. He used to get bullied a lot. “Maybe I got pretty tough from a lot of digging,” he agreed. Or maybe they were fake complimenting him in a sarcastic way and it was really bullying. Andy could never tell if that was what kids were trying to do until they started laughing. But he preferred to give people the benefit of the doubt and take their word for it until they proved otherwise.
“I’ll just bet,” the white boy said. “That’s why we’re here to recruit you. The Green Bears could use a strong dude like you.”
“You wouldn’t have to dig any more graves,” Nish said. “When you’re a Bear, you get fed. We’ve got access to gas-powered ranges that are still on, so we get cooked food.”
“We had spaghetti yesterday,” the little boy said. “With sauce!”
“Yeah, and me and my brother are vegetarian but the kids who aren’t vegetarian got meat sauce.”
“And you can live in your own house, since the Civic Center got too full for any more guys,” the white boy said. “The Bears are fucking huge, man.”
Andy winced. “That’s a curse word. You shouldn’t say that word.”
“Oh, like my mommy and daddy are around to wash my fucking mouth out with fucking soap? Fucking shit damn on a bastard son of a bitch. Who’s gonna fucking stop me?”
“No one,” Andy said, “but wrong things don’t stop being wrong just because no one can stop you doing them.”
“Fucking hell, dudes, we got ourselves a real Boy Scout here,” the white boy said, and Nish and his brother and the white boy all laughed.
“No,” Andy said. “I was never in the Boy Scouts.” The other boys laughed harder. Andy scowled. He knew they were laughing at what he said, and he was pretty sure it was probably in a nasty, making-fun-of-him way, but as usual he had no idea why they thought what he’d said was funny.
“Andy’s special,” Nish said, leaning on the fence. “If he doesn’t wanna swear I’m cool with that.” Nish hadn’t been one of the kids who’d bullied him in class. He had never talked to him or tried to be friends with him either, but at least he hadn’t bullied Andy. “How about it, Andy? Come join us!”
“No, thank you,” Andy said politely.
The white boy scowled. “Dude. You have no idea what you’re passing up.”
“That’s okay,” Andy said. “I don’t believe in stealing. Gangs go around stealing things from other kids, so I don’t want to join one. And I don’t believe in hurting anyone unless they hurt me first.”
“Bullshit,” Nish said. “In third grade you hit the teacher with a chair.”
Andy winced. He had done it because she took his book away while he was reading about dogs, even though he was already done with his assignment, because it was math class and he wasn’t supposed to be reading in math class. It had been totally unfair and triggered a complete emotional meltdown. He’d been suspended for three days and had had numerous Talks with his parents during that time. “I have a bad temper,” he admitted. “That doesn’t mean I think what I did was right.”
“I think you’d better reconsider,” the white boy said. “Carrie doesn’t like it when we report to her that some guy didn’t want to join the Bears. She’s psycho, man.”
“Who is Carrie?”
“Carrie Mulhaney. She’s Rich’s younger sister and second in command. When guys say they won’t join the Bears, she burns their houses down.”
“I’m not worried about that,” Andy said.
“I’m not fucking with you, man. I’m serious. She will burn your fucking house down.”
“With what?” Andy said. “Gasoline? Wood that’s on fire? Alcohol?”
“Are you serious?” the boy said. “With whatever! What does it matter?”
“My dogs are trained to smell dangerous things for me,” Andy said. “Fire is a smell they’re trained on. Gasoline is a smell they’re trained on. Natural gas is a smell they’re trained on. I don’t know of anything that can be used to burn down a house that isn’t a smell they’re trained on.” He smiled, with all his teeth, because a couple of kids in his class said that when he smiled with all of his teeth he looked like a psycho and he should stop doing that, except that right now, these boys were threatening him so looking like a psycho so they would leave him alone was a good thing. “I have guns upstairs in my house. If my dogs alert me that someone is bringing a dangerous smell to my house, I’ll take my dad’s rifle and I’ll shoot whoever is on my property. And dogs can smell a dangerous thing from a long way away. I could tell you all about how good dogs are at smelling, if you want.” Most kids never wanted to hear him talk about dogs. Occasionally adults would listen to him, but there were no adults anymore.
“Don’t let him get started,” Nish said. “If he starts talking about dogs he never shuts up.”
“Your funeral, man,” the white boy said. “If you’re saying no, you’re saying no, but I betcha Carrie isn’t worried about your guns.”
“That’s good,” Andy said. “If she’s not worried about them, then she won’t take precautions and it’ll be easy to shoot her if she comes into my yard.”
“Whatever,” the white boy said. “Come on, dudes, let’s go. We don’t need this loser anyway.”
“Weirdo,” the little boy said. “Creepy weirdo. We don’t even want him in the Bears.”
They left. Andy brought his dogs back into the house, sat down on the dead men’s plush, soft sofa, and called his dogs up on to the sofa with them. Then he hugged them while he cried. Emotional confrontations upset him, a lot. He’d gotten better at controlling his temper since third grade, and he could hide the fact that he wanted to cry until he was alone or with a safe grownup, but he couldn’t keep himself from crying indefinitely. Updog lay his head and paws down on Andy’s lap, which was heavy but comforting anyway, and Clifford snuggled close so Andy could hug him and cry against his fur.
After he was done crying, it was time to take his payment and go home. His dogs needed food, and he had candy bars at his house that he was saving for stressful times like this. He loaded his cart with the powdered milk and all the cans he could fit, as well as a bunch of fitness food replacements like energy bars and protein powder. Maybe tomorrow he’d come back for the rest of the cans; he didn’t know how fast dead smell cleared out of a house, though, so it was possible that other kids would hit the place before he had a chance to.
It was dark, and Andy had a hard time finding his way in the dark, but he trusted his dogs to know the way. “Home, Clifford. Home, Updog,” he said, and they trotted in front of him, pulling just hard enough on their leashes to lead him forward. Really, he was only holding their leashes to make them feel secure, because they were trained with leashes; he knew they would walk with him if he let go of the leashes, and it was hard to pull his heavy cart with one hand and hold onto two big dogs’ leashes with the other, but he did it anyway because his dogs expected it and he know how upset he got when things happened that he didn’t expect, so he imagined his dogs felt the same way.

Latibule (Ahkmenrah x Reader)
Description: Ahk’s time at Cambridge.
Notes: Takes place in 1942. Can be read as Male!Reader or F!Reader disguised as a male (40’s wasn’t the best time for female students.) Either way, gender neutral!
Professor Wilkins’ record collection is filled to the brim with classics, you note, filing through them for the perfect music. Rain patters outside, and the dusty library is alight with a nearby fireplace. Two student sit opposite each other, reading their own separate books and sparing glances at each other every now and then, the fire casting dancing shadows along their faces. You, on the other hand, are still looking through Wilkins’ collection, ranging from Beethoven to Glenn Miller and Ella Fitzgerald. The worn corners of the cases are soft against your calloused fingers, and at last you pull a random vinyl out, setting it on the old phonograph you’d been allowed to use for the evening. Copland comes on, an orchestral piece - not one you know, surprisingly. With that the rain outside mutes under the tones of the vinyl and the crackling of the fire, and you set out in search of books covering your study topic.
You’d come to Cambridge for exactly one reason: to study Egyptology. But, with Egyptology comes a massive range of other historical components, including Greece, Rome, and a good amount of the Middle East in general, as well as India and China. They all connect, like an old world trade, and though all that interests you is Egypt, the other subjects are ones you are required to learn. Much like your technique with the records your fingers skim along the binds of the many books, dust falling off them to coat your fingertips a duller shade. From the phonograph a woman begins to sing, and it draws you deeper into your search - through sections D to F, till you reach the author you’re looking for.
It’s a decent sized book, about as thick as your arm, and bigger than your face. This one, however, is recently used, the bindings flimsy and worn but mostly clean. When you open it, the cover slams down on the table with a crack, striking you for a moment as odd before you dig out your own notebook from your leather satchel. Pencil in hand, you take notes as the sun sets invisibly behind the amassing clouds, and the rain grows heavy with thunder striking its’ occasional beat. It isn’t long till you’re flipping the record over, and the students previously reading in front of the fire tap your shoulder, and helpfully inform you that the library is closing soon. Blearily, you nod, half hearing their words - university brings a level of exhaustion unknown to any other student or worker.
Reading over the inventions of Rome and their connection to Egypt, you don’t notice when the fire dies away, and you don’t notice the needle slipping off the record while it still spins. This specific library, in this specific wing of the building, is filled with artifacts from the various cultures you study - perhaps it’s a show of achievement, or a weak attempt to make students feel closer to their classes and studies, but all it does is unsettle you. Unopened mummies stare blankly ahead, golden skin reflecting in the dimming light, jewelry shining and various weapons hanging in their simplistic design.
There was one exhibit, however, that held a very special place in your heart purely because of how much it terrified you. Comparably it’s recently discovered, around five years ago - you can’t remember the exact date, but it’s set in the introductory plate in front if it. Glass protects it from being stolen, and dust gathers on the golden tablet; dubbed the Tablet of Ahkmenrah. Not very much is known about Ahkmenrah, not even his age, nor if Ahkmenrah is his real name, and no one can quite pinpoint the era either. If the name is correct, that places him more around the twelfth dynasty of the Middle Kingdom, but the wrappings and tomb design place him in the era of the Old Kingdom. Names aren’t everything, you know that, and you’re one of the believers that place him in the Old Kingdom, though which dynasty exactly is unknown.
The library closes as evening approaches, but you don’t notice, enraptured in the history of Rome’s invasion of Egypt. A light shines behind you, the only thing to bring you out of your reading. Turning around, you see the tablet glow - you squint your eyes, wondering if you’re hallucinating, or if there’s a play on your eyes, but no. It’s definitely glowing, humming almost, an ethereal tone so unearthly you’d never be able to recall it without hearing it again. In one final burst of light that fills the whole of the small library there’s a sudden breath in the air - fresh, and living, and a deep discomfort settles low in your stomach.
From the corner of the library you hear a moan, sounding pained and confused, which only makes you panic more. On instinct you go to the doors, your heart racing at a dangerously fast pace when you find them locked. The moaning gets louder, accompanied by a dull thudding, and the explorer in you takes hold of your nerves. There’s something there, something undiscovered, you just know it - all you need to do is step forward.
Easier said than done - a fight or flight response has decided to opt out, and what you’re left is a petrified, tense stance, which you’re fully aware is a reaction of prey. Like a deer in headlights. An especially loud thump breaks you out of the trance, which you’re half thankful for, but the noise increases and you’re left with more fear. Your steps are slow, cautious, and unbalanced - all the necessary things for a growing student. You make it to the exhibit without trouble, and somehow unsurprisingly, it’s Ahkmenrah’s casket, locked away in a glass case.
Twice you knock on the glass, gentle, and the rattling of the coffin stops. Then, two knocks, mimicking you. Your breath catches as you realize there’s something in there, some thing alive and well enough to recognize patterns, enough to recognize that you’re there without seeing you.
This is a cruel trick, you think to yourself. You’re not exactly important enough to be bullied at this school, but it’s not too far of a reach to say some math students could pull this off. All of it is too good to be true; a pathway into history, a skeleton come to life. Fumbling to your pockets you search for a paper clip, anything you could open the glass case with, and you come up empty. Once more you knock on the glass, the same pattern, and it is returned. With a calming breath, you go in search of paper clips.
There’s one on your desk, keeping some of your loose paper together, and faster than you can think you whip it off and put old skills to use. The illegality of it all doesn’t hit you, not even as your fingers trace over the gold plated sarcophagus, over the lapis design and black outlining. Twice you knock, and the thing inside responds in kind. One more shaky breath, you fiddle with the different knobs at the side, and with a click it opens.
Slowly, the door opens, and half what you expected and half what you were afraid of comes out - a man covered entirely in centuries old wrappings. His hands, fingers forced together, paw at the back of his head as he attempts to undo the restricting cloth. A million thoughts cross your mind, including that this has to be dangerous, and that he won’t understand you, and that he might kill you if your professor doesn’t.
“Uh…” you try to speak, but he’s still very clearly busy trying to unwrap himself. Hesitantly you move forward, reaching to help him, but he’s finally got it. Like a gift he pulls his mask away from his face, and what you see is nothing within the realm of what you expected.
“Oh my. You look surprisingly normal,” you blurt out, knowing full well he won’t know what you’re saying. He narrows his eyes, confused and more innocent than you expected - this boy can’t be older than 18, which is only a year younger than you. He says something in his own language, a dead one you’ve never heard before.
“Do…” you try to think of a word he knows, something he’ll recognize, when it comes to you - “You’re from Kemet… right?”
To your knowledge and your teachers’ knowledge Kemet is what they call their home, Egypt, and you pray to God he understands you. A spark shines in his eyes as he smiles, pointing at you when you say the word.
“Kemet!” He says in a joyously childish tone, grinning brightly with teeth much cleaner than what you expected. For another moment you stare at each other, him trying to decipher who you are, why you look the way you do, and what clothes you’re wearing, while you try to think of a way to tell him where he is.
“Kemet,” you say, pointing at him, “England,” you say, pointing at yourself.
“Enlan,” he replies, trying to mimic you. Giggling, you shake your head.
“England,” you say again, over pronouncing it. He nods, furrowing his brows in concentration.
“Enngland.”
Enthusiastically you nod, smiling just as bright as he is. Stuttering you take his hand, leading him to one of the cushy chairs in front of the fire place, which is now barely glowing red, the remaining embers buried in ash.
“Ahkmenrah?” You ask, gesturing to him. His mouth opens slightly - he’s confused, but he nods. He says something odd, but it ends in his name, so you assume that historians are correct; his name is Ahkmenrah.
“I,” you point to yourself, “am (Y/N).”
Once again he tries to repeat you, and it sounds like a bastardization of your name, which you quickly correct. Second time around he gets it, and the two of you smile. As he looks around the room, marveling at the number of books and the architecture, you sit staring at him, wondering how it’s possible. The golden tablet catches his eye and he stands, his hand still bandaged drags across your arm as he walks in a trance towards it. You follow close behind, gauging his reaction.
His fingers drag across the glass, leaving no imprint in their wrapped state. Again he says something to you, a breath barely coming out of him as the words are whispered.
“It’s yours, isn’t it?” You murmur, glancing at the tablet still half glowing, then back to him.
“Ahasu bey,” he whispers, going over every hieroglyph carved into its surface. It doesn’t sound quite right, but you studied Arabic for a time, which as close to the Egyptian language as it gets - it sounds like an odd version of ‘mine.’ So you repeat the word, in the version of the language that you know.
“Alkhasu bi?”
He turns to you, clearly surprised. For a moment he goes quiet, contemplating his words, a frown apparent on his face. He says something, something even you can’t understand, unlike Arabic or English.
“I can’t understand,” you say, feeling more lost than ever.
He sighs, forlorn as his fingers once more trace over the glass. Throat tight you attempt to swallow, reaching for his hands - someone has to untie them, and the only person is you. At first he jumps, startled by your touch, but he soon realizes what you’re trying to do. Slowly, you unravel the ages old cloth, careful not to tear anything.
The first thing you notice is how soft his hands are, unmarred from the labor his subjects faced. Your own fingers trace along the lines of his palm, reaching the tips of his fingers, holding them and curling them into his palm. You do the same with his other hand, and he pats your hand thankfully. Nervously he looks into your eyes and says something, something you can’t understand, but you take it to be a thank you, and you smile in return.
To pass the time locked away in the library, the both of you barred from leaving (though, he’d be a suspicion, wrapped up in all that cloth), you go over textbooks filled with different items. You point at an image of the night sky, and you say ‘night,’ while he says what you assume is night in his own language. Several things happen that night - you realize a lot of titles of things in Egypt aren’t the actual titles, they’re just the general name for something. The Great Nile is really called the Aur; Nile means river in their language. Even though you know you’d never be able to share the information without being accused of either witchcraft or stupidity, you revel in his guidance, and quietly adore the sound of his voice.
When the first light of dawn strikes a shadow down the book the two of you are examining he inhales sharply, turns without a word, and stands in front of his sarcophagus. Confused you turn to him, watching as he wraps his hands once more.
He says something, something you know is important information, but you still can’t do anything about it. Something relating to night, and life, and as you help him back into his wrappings entirely confused as to why, it hits you. Struggling to put the mask back on you assist, muttering to yourself, “you only live at night, how convenient,” while wondering when anything had been less convenient. You hold his hand as long as you can, till the first rays of sunlight settle into the library, and before you can see his form you close the coffin, seal it shut, and lock him away in the glass case.
Every evening you come back, even though you really can’t afford to spend time talking to him. For the most part he understands, you point at your books and your studies and try to communicate that it’s important. As you stay under the green table lamp, pen in hand and a dozen sheets of questions out in front of you, he sits beside you, and tries to decipher your language. Sometimes he asks questions, and it’s not long at all till he begins to understand basic phrases, items, and gestures. Over Christmas Break, you only have one essay to write (granted, it is supposed to be 4,000 words long), thus allowing for a bit more time to spend with the young King.
“You call Kemet, Egypt?” He asks one day, looking at the map spread out on your unofficial desk. A typewriter sits to the side, half your essay written, lit by the glow of the fire.
“Yes. It’s here,” you say, and as always, you attempt to use simple phrasing, even if he’s learning English at an alarming rate. Pointing at the upper are in which Egypt rests his eyes follow, and he frowns.
“It’s… small,” he murmurs, his own fingers tracing the path of the Nile, barely visible on your map.
“No, not really. The world is big,” you say with a soft giggle, watching him as his eyes dart around the map - there’s more land than he can fathom.
“Lots of world,” he says with a nod, straightening his back from the bent down position. With a smile you nod, and he takes a seat. From the desk beside your own you pull another chair, and sit close to him.
“We are here,” you tell him, pointing to the little island of Great Britain.
“Also small,” he notes with a giggle.
“Yes… but powerful. Like Kemet.”
In understanding he nods, almost enthusiastically; there’s little you know about him statistics wise, such as birthdays or number of wives or children, but you know he’s curious, a fast learner, and almost… excitable. It seems, all around, an odd word to refer to an ancient Egyptian Pharaoh as, but it suits him well - when he learns he smiles a brilliant smile, and his eyes light up, crinkling at the edges in delight. His lips pout in a soft confusion when he’s still learning a topic, and they part just slightly, dimples appearing when he frowns. There’s a lot you know about him - nothing informational, but you know him, and he knows you just as well.
You’re just as joyful as he is when he learns something. The linguistics of a dead language is hard for you to understand, which is fair enough he thinks, but you get it anyway, every now and then. However, you do have an advantage, which is knowing a language similar to his own; he doesn’t have anything like that in his arsenal of learning. Still he manages to bond with you, over the knowledge of the stars, the shared mystery of the universe, and the marvel of life on Earth.
“Do… your work, is it done?” He asks, gesturing to the typewriter in the desk corner. No, it’s not - you’ve got a ways to go.
“Yes,” is what you tell him instead. Time with him is such a precious thing, so precious you’d begun debating on getting a job at Cambridge University once you graduated. At your lie he smiles, soft and barely there, and takes your hand, leading you to the fireplace.
The two red velvet chairs that sit in front of the fire have been getting slowly closer to one another during your visits, to the point where he can now hold your hand, notice each pattern in your fingertips while you both sit in separate seats. He does this exact thing - the fire heats your cheeks as he stares at your knuckles, his thumb brushing over them as he notes the smoothness of your skin. Your heart races painfully when you stare at where your hands meet, so instead you watch his face, and admire the cold glow of his eyes in the firelight.
For a while he continues doing this, examining every bit of your hand, and for some reason you let him. Even if it’s not a newfangled invention that he’s doting over it’s a sign of affection, which is only further proved when he breaks the silence to speak.
“Mrr i Twn,” he says, the words as odd on his tongue as any other - you’re not sure if you’ll ever get used to hearing a language so starkly different from your own. Despite how strange it sounds, you actually know what he’s saying, though by the expression on his face, he doesn’t think you do. Your mouth falls open, your heart thundering in your chest, and a deep need sparks within you to touch him.
“Say that again,” you breathe out, unable to break the eye contact he’s made. Hesitantly he does so, saying the words quieter and faster. Gingerly you trace your fingers across his palm, till they’re wrapped around his wrist - he holds your wrist just as firm and gentle.
“You… know, don’t you,” he mumbles, his face darkening in a strong blush.
“I know,” you say, a smile cracking across your face, warmth fluttering in your chest. “In English it’s ‘I love you.’”
“I lub you,” he tries, and again you correct him, till it comes out clear as day - “I love you.”
He tries to speak, takes a breath to do so, but nothing comes out - he stares at your intertwined hands, the way you stroke over his veins, the love that warms your touch, before looking back up at you - and only then you notice the tears glistening in his eyes. You hold him tighter and lean in.
“Are you alright?”
“I am… bad,” he answers, and it’s clear his limited vocabulary is hindering him from expressing himself. So you lean in closer yet, till your noses nearly touch.
“I adore you,” you say, your tone a melodic dream that closes his eyes in a rapt sigh.
“I don’t know what that means,” he says.
“Sorry. I love you,” you clarified with a smile, one that he copies, leaning into you till your foreheads press together.
When the giggles recede he smiles, spellbound by your closeness as he leans in closer. It only feels natural to follow, revering his love as a deep fondness settles in your stomach, admiring till the last moment comes and your lips meet. You haven’t ever kissed anyone before - which has always been a source of shame for you - and it’s what you expected; a golden glow courses through you, and there’s a strong desire to deepen the kiss. What you don’t expect, and what you could’ve never expected, was how safe it all felt, and the warm comfort that tingles at your fingertips. You move on what feels right, using your free arm to tangle your hand into his hair, tugging gently on it as you press yourself closer to him. With a weak hum he pushes nearer to you, and somehow you end up in his lap.
How, exactly, you got here escapes you for a moment, and the oddity of it all doesn’t ever occur to you, even years later. In truth, the circumstances are very strange - you happened, by chance, to stay too late in a library, then a magic tablet brought a dead Egyptian King to life, and now you’re kissing him with more fervor than you’ve felt for anything or anybody. He goes as far as to slip his hands underneath your coat, shirking it off your back and pulling at your suspenders till they fall off your shoulders. Every stroke he makes on you, skin or cloth, electrifies you and you half expect him to be leaving a glowing path where his touch strays.
While he drags his hands anywhere you’ll let him touch, over your shoulders, down your chest to settle on your hips, you keep yours in place - one on his shoulder and the other on his cheek. Desperately he searches for your touch, longs for you to make a move but your techniques of love and worship are far different. He moves consistently, constantly, moving deeper into your kiss, tugging at your hair and pulling at the buttons at your shirt - you stay in place, too enraptured in each and every touch that his method nearly sends you into overload. Yet, even as your shirt is thrown to the ground, you can’t find yourself able to part from him. Sensory overload or no, there’s nothing more heavenly than his touch, and there’s no greater show of reverence and exaltation in any life, in any time than there is that night.
You stay with him as long as you can, as long as you dare. Love is a newfangled wonder, not one you easily let go of, and you thank God and His angels that Ahkmenrah loves you dearer than anything - just as you love him.

V is for Vietnamese & Vintage
Us three ladies had always played it pretty safe by way of our lunch dates. Not to say the local deli isn't absolutely kick ass - it's very tasty and very enjoyable every time we go, but in much the same way as I struggle to go to the same country more than once on my holidays (excluding India, you can never have enough India) I couldn't help but think that life's a bit too short to sit in the same eatery every time we meet for lunch, given that the whole day is ours, and within reason, travel is no issue.
The three of us decided that we would try different cuisines every week, and with the girls (Laura and Dani) living in the quieter, leafier suburbs of Otley and Burley in Wharfedale, with me (Alex) living in what I frequently describe as the bronx, 5 minutes from central Leeds but gloriously populated by some of the best food joints in the country (confirmed) they usually end up meeting at mine and then we go into town to try somewhere a bit off the beaten track. Invariably, being three mums of young children, we eat at the speed of rabid dogs and end up having a bit of time to go explore some local weird shop or two, never anything mainstream like a department store. Oh no. We like vintage shops. You know the type, they smell like damp and the inside of your nan's wardrobe, and we prance around pretending to overlook the fact that we are just in a well laid out, slightly more selective charity shop without the undertone of giving. Usually there's some blue haired student with a headscarf and a faint stench of Bobby Orange pawing through piles of shirts and jumpers that are deemed as retro, when they've actually some of them originated in C&A - we remember that place the first time round, depressingly. The whole vintage scene is a bit ironic and try hard and a bit sad at times, but the one thing that it does offer is the piece you are often looking at, generally is one of one only in the store. The same goes for charity shops, generally. We like stuff that can't be bought in bulk.
Dani owns Deluxe Blooms, and is a luxury faux florist, and very good at it too. Laura is a nail technician and spray tanning afficionado, and the owner of Maibella Nails and Tanning. I own a salon called Lexa Hair, and the three of us work together frequently. The ridiculous thing is though, that work is going really well for us, and while in the past we may have dug around in charity shops for a bargain simply to be economical, now it has begun more of a habit. And you know what they say, old habits die hard. We don't have to eat streetfood on picnic tables anymore, and we can shop anywhere we want, but at least just for me, I don't like extravagance and I'm not impressed by labels or price tags. I like pieces that are unique, with a story behind them. My two accomplices sort of get dragged in to it I think, but they seem on board with most of it. I hope.
And street food is the best food on earth, everyone knows that.
We kicked things off with a visit to a fairly new (maybe a year old I think) Vietnamese place on North Lane in Headingley named VietBaker. Inside it's very wooden looking, quite industrial and urban, stained wood everywhere and dark red leather chairs. It smells like the rice cooker that's chugging away in the corner, mixed with plenty of garlic and of course, the fresh baguettes that are stacked up in a glass cabinet above the front desk.
We opted for a sharing platter for £9, and from the menu us Yorkshire ruffians requested spring rolls (the deep fried ones, not the fresh, healthy ones obviously), prawn toast, and 'rustic chips'.
This was skin on chips with salt and pepper (well cooked and so tasty) and the prawn toast was understandably made of baguette slices. It made for a much heavier slab of prawn toast and therefore an even more unhealthy treat but man alive, was it good. The spring rolls were pork, prawn and the usual crispy vegetables inside. Not floppy or soggy, totally crispy and served with a really light and watery sweet chilli dip that's more sweet than chilli. It was all very lovely.
I've personally eaten from here a number of times and I think the Vietnamese have got it absolutely nailed when they make sandwich. Or a Ban Mih. Laura and I opted for one each, chicken for her and pork for me. Dani went for something off the new part of the menu, the fusion section, which even featured a take on beef bourgignon, Vietnamese style. She tried the Shanghai pork belly, served with rice. Her whole bowl was piled high, and we're not talking a polite, peanuts size bowl. More like a ‘free ceramic crunchy nut cereal box’ bowl, with the with tokens on the back of the pack, that you’d send off as a kid. It was huge. The second bowl was just plain rice, which worked really well as the pork alone was…. alot. It was sticky and tangy and rich and all those other wanky words that just mean amazing. I'm trying so hard to limit the wankiness. I like writing and eating, combining the two is hard work though. Bear with me. The slow cooked pork made me feel a bit gutted I went for a sandwich until I got stuck in.
Vietnam was a former French colony, and much like their neighbour Cambodia, found their local best offerings being bastardised to accomodate the 'local palate'. The nice version is that the baguette was the French's gift to the Vietnamese, although I imagine it was more a case of 'put your lovely meal in my baguette for me or you're in deep shit.'
I've never been to Vietnam but having visited Cambodge a few summers back, I remember being astounded at the gorgeous, light, dairy free Asian cuisine that had been shoved in a crusty, warm baguette. Whoever's story was true, it's the absolute bollocks.
They cut this freshly baked baguette open and spread it with patè on one side and on the other mayonnaise (already weird but hang in there) - add a ton of crispy green leaves, cucumber, pickles, coriander and fresh chilies, and add some meat into what little room is left. Enough meat to give you meat sweats. It. Is. Superb.
The pork was very finely sliced, dark and sticky again (here she goes) and you can bang on a fried egg, too, if you're an absolute wrong un. No thanks.
Laura had the chicken which was a milder flavour but none the less tasty and flavoursome. I noticed Laura pulling bits off her sandwich and delicately chewing away at them, while I picked it up and ate it like I'd been sleeping in the dark arches for the last month. I even had to be asked to wipe my face. Sorry, not sorry. No messing with a Ban Mih. Especially not this one.
The bill was a very respectable £11 a head, and they threw in a free set of spring rolls for us, which was a nice unexpected surprise. The place had a steady flow of traffic, and although wasn't packed, I've been on an evening and I think it's safe to assume that's the bulk of their trade. It was fantastic food, very reasonable and highly recommended. Great staff and great location. We'll be back!
Afterwards we drove for about 3 days to find a parking spot anywhere near Hyde Park, so we could check out the newly (ish) renovated (OK sign replaced and possibly ownership changed) Vintage something or other in Hyde Park.
I forget the name, and if I'm brutally honest I can see why. It's alright, but it used to be alot better. The last time I went in there was alot of very old apothecary style wooden drawer units, some weird taxidermy, and unusual pictures in frames that would look incredible in the lounge. This time there was quite a bit of formica, and some hideously orange stained TV units that I guess in some context would be deemed as cool again.
The music collection seemed to be where the most effort had been made. The clothing was actually quite 'quirky' in the sense that you wouldn't actually wear alot of it, there was a whole department that seemed to have been handed over by the owner of the late knob head Jimmy Saville, shell suit after shell suit in every colour of the rainbow, in that non breathable fabric you'd get a two man tent in. Hideous. Still, there are some absolute finds in there. I would encourage people to bear in mind that these shops have a high stock turnaround and in their uniqueness, and ability to replace items based on sales, any vintage shop can be a complete bag of shite one week and a total gold mine the next. Its the luck of the drawer, I love that about them. That and the fact that we call them vintage shops. The three of us refer to them as shit shops, but potato patato.
I find it depressing that as I mentioned before, alot of the 'retro' stuff is just normal stuff we, in our 30s, encountered in our youth. There was a 'vintage phone' that was £15 and I'm pretty sure my gran has it now. It's literally a BT £10 phone still in argos, but clearly it had lived with a heavy smoker, adding to the aged facade.
Some of it was very authentic, some of it was broken crap, but the general feel of the place is a good one. There is more 70s stuff than anything else which is quite cool, but like I say, stock changes very frequently. Dani bought an oversized T shirt with a University football team logo emblazoned across it, and to be honest I would have too. There was a vast array of university related large varsity based sweaters, some unnecessarily cut in half width ways (why?!!!! Serves no purpose now, you fools) and that's the kind of thing I would have liked to look at. But as I was in charge of a one year old who was bombing around the floor, doubling as a human sweeping brush and coming back with more dust on him than the inside of the V6 after the attic stairs have been tackled, I gave it up as a bad job and put my bank card back away. No spending for mum today. Gutted.
The shop is pretty fabulous, on the whole. They do know how to charge when it comes to furniture, but the clothing is far more reasonable. It's not all one off pieces, a couple of items make an appearance a few times and that kind of ruins it for me, I start picturing some huge factory in China making hideously outdated clothing and leaving them in a damp garage for a few years, chucking a bit of tea down them and wearing the cuffs and collars down, before exporting the newly knackered pieces to us dumbasses in our 'quirky vintage shops'. Who knows. It's well laid out, and pretty cool, and although not my favourite, I imagine the next time I go it'll be a whole different experience. Swings and roundabouts with these places. It was an interesting look, and if Parker hadn't been doing his best ferret impression I would have definitely bought a jumper. Well worth a look.
Until next week!

Imagine Your Favorite Villain falling in love with you even though you're on the enemy side - so they try and bribe/convince you into working with them instead.
‘Calm down, Rose! Just calm down,’ I tell myself as I peak out of the alley way. I duck back in quickly when I notice the very man I was hiding from, a short man with odd belled pigtail like hair, rounding the corner of the block.
‘That creepy guy has got to be the stand user we’re looking for! There’s something off about him... and of course I’m alone.’ I bite the inside of my cheek and curse Jotaro for wanting to split up. I double curse Jean, then, for disappearing as fast as he did.
‘I can’t take him down by myself and there’s no telling what he’s capable of...’ I think as I listen to his footsteps.
‘Do I stay or run? There’s no doubt he knows what I look like.. I can try and use my stand on him but, if he’s too resolved, it won’t work!’ I hear his shoes scuff to a stop suddenly, his shadow displayed on the sidewalk. My heart skips a beat as I hear him chuckle. I close my eyes and try to focus on his mind state.
“Oh? Did I lose her? Maybe I should have followed her a little closer..” I try to focus on the confusion in his voice but, find that his resolve was too strong. My heart drops faster than a stone into a dark lake.
‘He knows exactly where I am!’ He runs forward and laughs out load as I jump back, looking for a way out of the narrow alley.
“A lot closer! Attaboy, Alessi, attaboy!,” he speaks aloud as he steps into the alley now. I curse and turn away, beginning to run in as deep as the alley would. I don’t hear him giving chase and look back. He was just standing there, smug and menacing as I came to a halt.
“Don’t you realize that running is useless? I’ve you trapped you here!” He begins to walk down towards me, his shoes clicking gleefully as he did.
“From far away, you don’t look like much but, I must admit, when you get closer, it’s more obvious why Lord DIO chose you over someone like Mariah.” He nods his head as he gets closer. I think fast and grab the lid of one of the garbage cans and rush him with it, kicking him once in the shin as hard as I can for good measure. He cries out as he falls to the floor and I run past his curled up form.
As I retreat, I can’t help but feel a falling sensation. Suddenly feeling so much shorter than before, I whip around to look into the alley again.
‘I’m shrinking!,’ The man, I think his name is Alessi, shambles up from the floor, leaning against the wall before noticing and running towards me at full speed. My heart palpitates and soon, I am running down the street as fast as my stubby legs could manage. I begin to scream for help, in hopes that anyone would at least attempt to stop the man.
“The street’s are empty around this part! No one can help you of the can’t hear you, pint size!” I hear him behind me and can’t help but whimper as I round another corner quickly but, not quick enough. He grips the collar of my shirt and yanks me up off of the ground, smiling sinisterly and shaking me around.
“You.. are.. so.. lucky,” he huffs out as my shoes slip off of my feet. Alessi looks around for a moment before leaning closer and whispering:
“So lucky that I can’t kill you.” I swallow spit and begin to kick my feet against his chest. He simply holds me away from his body and chuckles one of the most creepy chuckles I’ve ever heard.
“I’d make you pay, little girl, but, you have something of a bounty on your head. A big one.” His smile widens, giving me one last sake until I stop to catch my breath.
“Attaboy, Alessi, you made it to pay day!,” he says as he begins to whistle and carry me around the corner.
He swings open the door of some beat up black car, sitting in the back seat. He places me on the seat, holding me down with me arm. Thirty seconds of him rummages around yields Alessi finally presenting a bundle of rope. He continues to whistle lowly as he then ties my ankles together before he clicks my seatbelt into place. Alessi pats his greasy and giant hands over my hair and guffaws to himself. He slams the car door shut and moves to sit in the front. The engine purred to life and he drove off, watching me through the rear view mirror, muttering every now and again about how he had ‘made it’. As we drive down the streets of the hot city, I notice Jotaro facing away from
***
I don’t quite remember falling asleep but wake up on a mound of pillows. I look around quickly and inspect my normal sized hands. The air felt stale and smelled as though someone smeared frankincense all over the walls and floors of the room. I snort at the strong scent and stand, spinning around once before I lay eyes on a door. I begin to make my way to it when it opens unexpectedly.
“Just in time.” The hair, the eyes, the aura, the chill that ran down my spine as he spoke and the pompous air amount him told me all I needed to know to identify him as—
“DIO!” I step back quickly as to allow a greater amount space between us. I would be lying if I said I didn’t feel my heart getting ready to burst at the sight of the ancient man.
“Rose.” He sounds almost affectionate as I harden my stare. My eyes dart around the room to find an alternative exit but, come up short.
“What’s your angle?,” I ask as he steps further into the room.
“Not happy to see me, I take it. That’s quite a first,” he sounds half impressed as I take another step back, keeping my hands up as though I could block any blow he could deal. The air is silent before he speaks up again.
“My angle? I suppose it would be.. dinner.” Paralyzed with horror, I try to will myself to move as he flashes a set of pearly white teeth. My breath catches in my throat.
‘He’s going to eat you!,’ a small voice in my head screams as he paces closer. I gasp and slide back further, almost tripping over the rope from earlier. I kick it out of my way and look around for something to defend myself. My feet find themselves tangled and I find myself falling to the floor, only to be saved be the pillows. I pat around and pick up the densest pillow I could find
“E-eat this!” I chuck it at him and run around him to the door while he is (I hope) confused. I clutch the door knob only for a bigger, colder, hand to complete engulf mine, pulling the door shut and me into the chest of a viscous predator. My hand let’s go immediately and my legs move to the other side of the room, burrowing me in the farthest corner from him. I close my eyes tightly and try to use Time After Time to the best of my ability though, just as I thought, his resolve is that of a lion. I full expect to be pounced on and drained for all the blood in my body but, no blows come. There are no teeth imbedding themselves in my skin. I keep m eyes shut, however, as the stillness of the room only serves to fuel my anxiety.
“I have a proposition to make to you.” He sounds closer and I open one eye to see him leaning on the wall beside me. His face was screwed up in slight... apprehension? I cower further into the corner before he clicks his tongue and withdraws just slightly.
“I’d like to talk over dinner, that’s all. There is no need to be afraid, you will not come under harm, unless you choose to.” Motioning me towards the door, DIO pushes himself off of the wall. I look from him to the door, moving across the room to it. He’s hot on my heels, I can feel it.
“Walk down the hallway to the right,” he commands, no doubt watching me cautiously. I grip the door knob and take a deep breath before deciding that running wasn’t the smartest decision with DIO in such close proximity. The door is open and I start to walk down the hallway as he said. He moves from behind me, pacing at a leisure stroll beside me instead. I fix my gaze to the ground.
“..You know you won’t get away with this, right?” He hums in acknowledgement.
“Perhaps but, it seems like I am already, does it not?” I simply shrug, though he does seem to have a point there. I sigh quietly through my nose.
“They’ll.. they’ll find this shitty mansion and burn you and it to the ground,” I steady myself on hatred and anger as he hums once again.
“In here,” he motions to the right once more through open french doors. The smell of something savory wafts through m nostrils as I step through, eyeing the seating arrangement around a small table. DIO passes by me as I freeze up at the rose and wine glasses on the table. A wooden chair scrapes against the floor as he pulls it out.
“You can’t already have cold feet,” he teases in what sounds like a joyful tone. I eye him for a moment and turn to run. I get about half a foot to the doors again before I run into something hard. Cold hands wrap around my triceps gently but, firmly.
“Sit down, Rose.” His voice is sterner but, not as upset as I thought he’d be as he turns me around.
‘How did he get over here so fast?,’ I think as I walk towards the table now, his hand on the small of my back. I sit in the chair quickly before he pushes the chair into the table. He passes around the side and sits in his own seat across from me.
“Do you like the rose? I wanted to get a water lily but, those are a dime a dozen here. This was so on the nose as well, how could I not?,” he laments as he looks to me expectantly. I look at the rose and pick it up, giving a fake smile as I look it over.
“It’s.. nice,” I answer as loud as my meek voice would allow. I didn’t look up at him again but, I knew he was watching me as I put it back down. Someone, I don’t know who, comes over to the table, placing some platters down in front of us as well as a bottle of wine.
“I’m aware that this is.. an odd arrangement but, I believe we should get down to business,” DIO speaks as the lids on the platters are lifted. The steam from hot lobster tails rolls over my face and I can’t help but feel my stomach growl at the smell.
“I’ve had my eye on you since you joined the Joestars in India. You are quite eye catching.” I move to pick up my fork but, elect not to.
‘There could be poison or something in this,’ I think as I lean back in my chair, turning my head away from it.
“It’s safe.” I steal a glance up at him and he is cutting into his food just fine.
“What do you want from me?,” I snap at him.
“You wanted to ‘talk’ but, you’re dragging this out a lot farther than it has to be, aren’t you?,” I assert as he stops for a moment.
“Eat,” he simply says, continuing on his own plate. I take in a breath and look down at the seafood. My stomach churns once more and I let the breath escape once. My hesitation is evident as I finally pick up the silver utensils. I cut into one of the lobster tails and bring it to my lips.
“Now, what exactly is this proposition?,” I inquire, keeping my eyes on my plate. The lobster is masterful and tastes as though it was cooked to perfection, in my modest opinion.
‘If there really isn’t anything wrong with the lobster, I suppose I can enjoy it while it’s free,’ I just If to myself as I continue to eat. I almost forget where I am and what the situation is. He stays silent for a moment, his utensils clang against the plate quietly. He clears his throat and snaps his fingers. I look up almost immediately and take in his candle lit silhouette as he holds his pose, one leg folded over the other and arm propped up on the arm rest. The same man from before, I’m presuming, walks over and grabs the bottle, opening it quickly and pouring a glass for DIO and I before leaving the bottle and disappearing once more. I look to the glass for a moment before picking mine up and taking a sip, bringing new life to my parched throat.
“I suppose it’s worth noting that it’s less of a proposition, and more of an invitation,” he purrs.
‘He fucking purrs.’ I lower the glass and look into his eyes before looking down at the table again. It felt like I was staring into a pitch black room whenever I took in more than 25% of his being.
“An invitation? To what? Stand by your side? Sorry, no deal.” He laughs and takes his own glass into his hand, swirling it.
“No, of course not,” he pauses to take a sip himself.
“I would have you sit.” I cough loudly as my lungs seem to expel all air from themselves.
“Excuse me?”
“That’s why I brought you here. I’ve grown quite fond of... well, you. So, I extend the invitation of a lifetime to you.” I catch my breath and look up at him.
“You’re joking, right?,” I wheeze out as he takes another sip before placing the glass on the table, leaning and laying his head on his fists.
“I assure you, I am not joking.” I watch him for what seems like forever before I put the glass down and sit back in my chair, looking up at the ceiling.
“What do you think my answer is?” I give at strained chuckle. I push my chair away from the table and look to the doors once more.
“I’ve heard about the things you’ve done and can only imagine the things you will do. Even if I wanted to, I wouldn’t stand or even sit by your side,” I let my eyes fall on his face again to gauge his reaction smugly. Though, when his eyes flicker from gold to red and I cower ever so slightly.
“I don’t mean to burst your bubble but, the men you are traveling with are no saints either,” DIO remarks harshly before an grinning uncanny grin.
“I bet they’re not even looking for you.” I scoff and wave a hand at him.
“They are. I know they are.” He simply shrugs his shoulders lazily and sighs.
“Think about it. They pick up a thrifter in and she suddenly disappears. She doesn’t have a strong stand power either and is just another person to protect and another mouth to feed. Why would they look for her?” He tilts is head to the side. I dismiss him and go to take another sip of the wine.
“That’s what happened to that girl they were with at first. They left her behind in Calcutta because she was only dragging them down.” My eyes widen as he looks as though he’s said too much suddenly, covering his mouth with a hand.
“What girl are you talking about?,” I mutter out as he sits back now in his seat, picking up his glass again.
“I’ve said too much.” I lean forward again.
“What girl?” The desperation in my voice is painfully obvious as I find all of this to be just too convenient.
‘I met them in Calcutta..’ I think as he looks as though he’s thinking.
“I really can’t say. She didn’t look very important.” I look back and forth as I ponder the thought.
“You said she was.. holding them back?” He nods once.
“Sort of like how you do.” Huffing and crossing my arms, I decide it was more of a dig at me than an observation.
“Then what the hell do you want from me? Sounds like you both think I’m pretty useless,” I snap suddenly. I chide myself for letting m emotions show but, stay coiled in anger. He watches me for a moment before sitting up and shaking his head once.
“No, oh no. I don’t find you useless.” The smooth tone of his voice catches me off guard as he places an offended over his chest. His eyes look as though the are about to water and I can’t help but to soften my gaze as he seems to look for the words to go on.
“You... don’t think I’m useless?,” I ask as he shakes his head, his eyebrows knit together as though he had heard the most blasphemous sentence fall from my lips.
“No, not at all. I believe you can be quite useful to me,” he explains in a softer voice as he slowly stands. I swallow spit as he rounds the table.
“A little thing such as you has a place here.” He stands beside me now and dolly brushes my cheek with the back of his hand.
“I would make sure our talents are utilized to their fullest here. And I, DIO, would never dream of leaving you.” His name brings some reality back to the situation as I lean out of his grasp.

However, a project is only truly complete when you have made the right choice of hardware from South India Agencies (SIA).
Hardware for cabinetry has to strike the perfect balance between form and functionality. However, the final decorative touch is all that matters.
For kitchen hardware cabinetry, a combo of knobs and pulls creates a visual impact.
Pulls on the drawers and knobs on the doors make an ideal choice; however, you could use them either way.
The kitchen cabinetry decorative hardware is available in a variety of types, sizes, styles, materials, and finishes. Hardware for cabinetry should be on par with the style and your comfort level as well. For this, you could either opt for knobs, pulls, or a combination of both. A cabinet is a lot easier to open with a knob and a drawer with a pull. Installing vertical drawer pulls works best for bathroom baseboard cabinets.
When compared to the handles, the knobs have smaller profiles that can be used for both drawers and cabinets. They are also less expensive easier to install rather than pulls and could be fixed with just one screw to the surface.
Hardware cabinetry such as pulls is larger than knobs and most preferred to make a style statement. They are also easy to grip cost higher than knobs. They come in many different sizes and complement drawers or bigger-sized cabinets that have a linear shape.
Choosing the right finish for any hardware for cabinetry determines and works best when the finish you opt for adds contrast to the room.
Generally, pulls are positioned horizontally on drawers and vertically on doors. For contemporary kitchens, you could place the pulls on the doors horizontally for a sleek look. Irrespective of your kitchen’s style it is up to you to decide how you would want the knobs and pulls to be positioned before being permanently attached to the cabinetry.
SIA’s range of hardware products also includes door locks, soft closers for doors, sliding door fittings, glass fitting, stainless steel fittings, door hinges, auto hinges, hydraulic hinges, door locks, and shower cubicles; etc.

How To Clean Cabinet handles, knobs, and hinges
The kitchen is the heart of your home that is in regular use every day, you go there to take your items of daily use, be it a spoon, bowl, plate, or cup. You are also constantly using the kitchen cabinets, and cupboards, and pulling out the drawers to take the required utensils for cooking. Thus there is always a continual use of the kitchen surfaces including the kitchen cabinet knobs, door hinges, soft closers for doors, hydraulic hinges, auto hinges, and drawer pulls making them the most touched and used surfaces at home. With the continuous use of these items, there is a build-up of grease and grime on them, dulling the surface, reducing the shine, and ending up making them look tired, dingy, and dirty.
Everyone would always wish to have shining stainless steel fittings, clean cabinet handles, knobs, and soft close hinges. You would also want the knobs and antique wooden drawer pulls to be clean and well-maintained, which paves the way to enhance the overall look and appeal and ensure that your favourite furniture pieces and fittings such as the sliding door fittings and glass fitting are functional life-long. To help clean the cabinet handles, knobs, door hinges and auto hinges there are some simple cleaning procedures and easy home remedies that you could follow.
For those who prefer to add traditional and rustic themes, the wood hardware does extremely well to add charm and warmth. To continue to maintain the elegance of cabinet handles, knobs, and door hinges you could clean them by spraying and wiping gently with a mild, soapy solution. The next best option to clean the stainless steel fittings and soft close hinges would be to use a diluted mixture of water and white distilled vinegar. Whether you use the soapy solution, or the water and vinegar mix, either way, make sure to wipe and clean dry them without allowing any water to remain, seep in, or settle there for too long, as it could lead to warping and in case of wood could swell and spoil it. A gentle rub with a toothbrush could also do miracles and remove tougher, stubborn stains, again ensuring to completely wipe dry with a soft cloth.
Ceramic, glass knobs, glass fitting, or pulls would appear as if they need high maintenance but in reality, they are also easy to clean. For ceramic hardware just rubbing the hardware surface with a damp cloth would do; however, for glass knobs, glass fitting, a spray with a glass cleaner, or use a newspaper dipped in a mixture of water and vinegar solution to wipe it clean which will also prevent streaking.
When pretty expensive metal hardware is installed it adds a touch of shine and glitz to living spaces, and has become one of the most common options in Indian homes. Metal hardware is mostly used in the kitchen and bathrooms. The kitchen is the place where they tend to accumulate thick stubborn stains and stubborn layers of grime that would not go so easily. To clean kitchen cabinet hardware made of metal you could dismantle the hardware if possible and soak them in a soapy solution either overnight or for a few hours to get rid of all the dirt that has accumulated on it. For copper hardware, you could rub lemon or a mixture of salt and vinegar that will help get rid of grime.

Top 4 Types Of Locks For Your Home Security System
India has seen a sharp rise in the rates of thefts and burglary over the last few years. Thus it is the need of the hour that we strengthen the security of our homes.
Door Locks are the most essential and fundamental element of home security. While choosing door locks and a complete security system for your place, always select the highly trusted brand. Europa is one of the most trusted and best door lock company in India.
Here are the various types of locks which ensures the safety of your homes:
Deadbolts: Being one of the finest barriers against theft and robbery, deadbolt locks are frequently found on outside doors. These locks do not employ springs; instead, a bolt is moved into position by turning a knob. Owing to their potential to withstand a beating, drilling and plucking with instruments like knives, deadlocks are helpful.
The simplest deadbolt locks use a single cylinder. These are activated unilaterally by the user via a key. Thumb turn bolts that may also be locked inside with a key are a feature of more sophisticated models.
Knob locks: Knob locks fall under the simple lock category, where the locking cylinder is placed inside the door handle. Generally, knob locks have round handles with an ample amount of space inside for all the mechanisms.
Mortise locks: Mortise locks are prevalent sturdy lock types for external doors. Depending on the application and usage, these door locks are generally available in light and heavy models. As Mortise locks extend up to a significant distance into the door’s frame. This feature is beneficial as it provides more strength to the coil when locked.
Having a closer look at the technical aspects, mortise locks on the inside are a complex system of gears and mechanisms housed inside a cylindrical body. Often Box shaped mortise locks are also available, the system protrudes several inches into the door frame and fits with multiple bolts. Mostly, mortise locks are one of the best safety equipment you should use to ensure well-being. These locks are commonly used in apartments, commercial, and glass entry doors.
Night Latch: A Night Latch is a lock frequently seen on front doors of homes; it is placed on the interior surface of doors that open inward. The night latch automatically latches the door shut when it is closed. A night latch is a spring lock that can be unlocked from the inside using a short handle or knob and only a key from the outside. Pulling the door closed will engage the latch into the strike plate, eliminating the need to secure the lock with a key.
Conclusion:
Locks are essential to save your precious and costly belongings from theft. With a comprehensive range of security solutions ranging from the best lock for shutter to the best home locks, Europa has got you all covered.

So I had this dream...
I was standing in front of a door. A very large pink door with a bronze handle. There was a large mermaid knocker in the center, there were vines with roses growing up the frame. I tried the door knob and it swung open freely.
Once inside, I hung my coat up on the rack and followed the hall down to a dining room. A pearl chandelier hung in the center of a beautifully set table. People were mingling along the sides, there was a string quartet playing in the corner and a very tall man with a trench coat was conducting the players while sipping out of a rocks glass.
I circled around the table to get a better look, and I could hear him asking the cellist about her unhappy marriage and subsequent affair.
Sherlock Holmes.
My inner fan girl squealed but I somehow managed to keep my composure. I ducked behind a flower arrangement before he could see me.
A mop of curly hair and piercing eyes popped around the corner and pinned me to the spot.
“You have a smell, you know. A smelly smell. That smells, smelly.” He wrinkled his nose at me and twirled around a few times before sauntering off to the buffet. I could hear him informing an older gentleman about a heart condition his doctor overlooked at his recent visit.
“Sorry about him, he hasn’t been the same since he died.” Watson collected the scarf that had fallen to the floor amidst the twirling. “He’ll be asking me where this is later.” With a quick shake and some dusting, Watson rolled the scarf and tucked it away in his coat.
Sherlock had since found his way to the fish aquarium and was in the process of chastising a fish for hiding behind the plastic plants instead of facing him like an adult. “You coward! You’re all talk when you’re in front of your little scaly friends. What’s your drink my good man? You look like a gin sort of man.” He stooped over the top of the tank and began hurling swear words through the water. After taking a large gulp from his glass, he turned to look at Watson and I. “Just what are you two gossiping about?” He pulled down a curtain from the rod, draped it around his shoulders and claimed to be Miss India 2018. Watson rested this head in his hands. “I’ll never get that back from him, I’d better speak with the host and compensate them or it’ll be another lawsuit.”
That’s when I woke up. I love Sherlock and I’ve been waiting for the newest season to come out on Netflix, one of my favorite dreams.
