The Twelve Plagues
“Have you given thought to what we will do if the people of Gallador want no part of us?”-Gladdic
“Why would they do that?” Dante said. “We’ve been allies for years now.”
“The Eiden Rane burned many lands on his way to yours. They might lack the food to share. And unless Ka’s warning was mere bluff, by the time we reach them, they might be suffering the punishments of the gods as well.”
“What are you actually asking me here? If I’d attack them and take their stores from them?”
“Just so.”
“What do you think?”
“That you will deny it now, but also that if Gallador attempts to turn us away, your answer will prove optimistic if not a lie.”
Dante was tempted to ask him what his point was, but decided to not care instead.
Pg. 25
*Gladdic, do you really think Blays would let his man do that?
Blays lunged forward and slapped the cup out of Dante’s hands, spilling wine across the dirt.
Dante glared at him. “What the hell did you do that for?”
“Didn’t you just say the strands are inside our food? And you’re about to drink that?”
“It’s not all food, you fool. Just the stuff we’ve been harvesting. I think.”
Pg. 51
“They’re going to have me hanged for this.” Halbank said. “I just know it.”
“Never been hanged before?” Blays stretched his arms above his head. “The first time is always the worst. But after the third or fourth time you get noosed, you get used to it.”
“Are you being quite serious?”
“Don’t listen to him.” Dante said. “He’s only been hanged once.”
“Are you being serious?”
Pg. 68
“Right.” Blays yelled. He stood on the raised prow of the remaining half of the wreckage. “Time to get harpooned!”
Pg. 72
*A sea monster is harassing the gang’s boat and once one of its tentacles attacks Dante, Blays decides it’s time for it to die.
The fog had only partway lifted by noon when they heard screams u land just ahead of them.
Dante and Blays looked at each other.
“All right.” Dante said. “But let’s make it quick.”
Pg. 75
*We’ll go save these people for you, babe.
“What do you say?” Blays had appeared without warning at all, though somehow Dante had known he was approaching. “Should we go out for a sail?”
Pg. 88
“Are you telling me that you’re about to spend a lot of time doing something boring while I stand around trying to remember the last time I saw my wife?”-Blays to Dante
Pg. 100
*You’re looking at your wife right now. Dante’s right there. LOL.
The sound of a man’s scream lifted from Ynding. He (Dante) broke into a run. The scream sounded again. He couldn’t tell if it was Blays. It didn’t take much more time than a minute to reach the outer ring of houses, yet it felt like ten times as long. He slowed, nicking the back of his arm and pulling the shadows to him. “Blays! Blays!”
Pg. 101
The group is taking shelter from a hailstorm that knocked Dante out. The rest of the group is at the opening while Blays is….
Dante sat up and gingerly rubbed his head, but it was pleasantly half numb. “Where in the world are we?”
“Halfway across it.” Blays was crouched beside him, watching the storm.
Pg. 259
*Babe’s hurt. Must hover.
Without warning-without even taking its eyes off Blays-it changed direction to gallop towards Dante.
Eyes bulging, Dante scrambled back. Blays dashed to put himself between them, but the creature was already tearing past him, he swung the spear like a sword, but its tip just missed the beast’s wizened hide.
Pg. 362
Blays decides he’s going to confront the red lightening. It doesn’t end well. Dante loses it because Blays gets hurt and also confronts the lightening with similar results.
Pg. 391-393
*Dante always seems to go stupid when Blays is in danger.

back to regularly scheduled cycle posting, because it just seems like the Thing To Do today i guess
you know how light of life was just an all-around bad time for the squad? what if it went even worse! bullet points bc i feel like it
dante, through luck or skill or trickery wins that fight at the end and brings blays before the lich, insisting even now that blays should be turned
just. so full of confidence on the subject
and blays kinda can’t believe it, that the lich would Actually go back on what he decided
but dante’s real confident and either they’re gonna lose big time or, just maybe, dante isn’t as far away as blays feared
the lich, naturally, does not take kindly to dante just fuckin showing up with blays (and maybe also gladdic? since he was the one the lich actually wanted)
the lich takes even less kindly to dante saying ‘you’re making a mistake-‘
that one he Really doesn’t like
dante doesn’t get to finish that sentence and gets that. fear thing again, but worse this time
and somewhere in there blays starts mouthing off again, bc he’s blays and that’s just what he does
but it turns out he can be very easily shut up if the lich threatens to kill dante
even lich dante
like the lich doesn’t even have to say anything he can just casually lay the blade of the glaive against the back of dante’s neck and blays just stops
and like. maybe there is a way to break the lich’s hold besides restoring the remnant. maybe there’s not
either way the lich gets put in this lovely position of either
turning blays and setting him n dante loose together and all the inevitable chaos that causes, bc apparently even dante alone is hard to control effectively
or kill blays right here and risk that breaking it
granted that option would probably break dante either way
but like. turning blays means the lich’s mind Can be changed, which means dante will try again at some point
but losing control of dante is also a sign to the other lesser liches that breaking away is possible
and it’s all around just a bad time for him
he could kill them both, but dante is a very useful tool to have
lich has to decide what the fuck he’s gonna do with these two, so he walks away
and that leaves just the two of them alone, talking
blays is like ‘lmao you just got us both killed’
and dante’s like. trying to be confident abt his position
but he and blays both know it’s bullshit
and probably they are both dead
but
the aba quen
maybe blays still has it secreted away, maybe he talked dante into taking it or maybe dante just took it on his own out of curiosity
but if it’s here
and blays gets more comfortable w the stream
and like. he could maybe delich dante right here and now
and then dante’s weak and incredibly shaken and they’re in the middle of the goddamn lich’s camp
or maybe
dante tries to let blays go
that option definitely gets dante killed
but like
dante sees the lich’s visions
and as a lich himself, he sees their beauty
and he wants to share that with blays
but if he believes the lich won’t turn blays, he won’t get to do that
and so...
blays goes free
and wow is that a mess of things for blays
bc that more than anything hits ‘i know you’re still in there’
and then he Knows that
and he has to believe that this will get dante killed if/when the lich finds out
and it’s just. he has an escape from lichville and he’s failed in just about every way he can
but gdi he isn’t going to leave dante there
like if it got to this point there’s no way he’s going
or if he does, he doesn’t go far, and fully intends to drag dante out or die trying
(“but if dante’s there, maybe he’ll make it slightly less dark”
that line gets me every time)
and. if blays sees dante really trying to save him, he believes that in his heart
and maybe then he stays, and lets the lich decide against him- because there’s no way this ends well for him
either he dies and dante gets to live and make whatever corner of the world he’s allotted a little less shitty
or they both die together, which is kind of their destiny anyway
and then everything is Even Worse!

Motor Jazz: Them To Us - new compilation from Bathurst
This compilation sees the coming together of independent music makers from across the globe to meet in one place and gather as a single entity. That simmering hub of warmth and affection is known as Motor Jazz - a place for artists to congregate and share their devotion for songs that are infused with rhythms created by anodic wires, buttons and other digital paraphernalia. That’s electronic music to you and me, and in this case electronic music with swing, a sense of freedom and improvisation that some might call ‘Jazz’.

I’m pretty sure this is how that one scene went down. You know which one I mean.
Dante pointing to Gladdic: “Oh my gods, what happened to him?”
Blays: “He died of natural causes.”
Dante: “You pushed him off the roof.”
Blays: “Gravity is natural.”

What Lies Beyond is almost here, so here’s The Spear of Stars trivia:
-the cities of the Alebolgian Strip use sky couriers (messenger birds) to deliver short notes
-Cavana is the largest city in the Strip and is structured in defensible concentric rings
-ether can be used to seal things like books to preserve them against time and rot
-the Odeleon in Bressel is taller than the Cathedral of Ivars back in Narashtovik and much wider- it’s huge
-it’s not really trivia, but I really enjoyed Raxa’s scene climbing the Exchange by just. sealing herself in the rock a little bit
-ether can also be used as a lockpick
-Adaine has been an interesting fellow for quite a while
-Gladdic is an extremely skilled healer
-Raxa is trying really really hard to not get attached to: Sorrowen, getting into large-scale trouble, other people in general. she is largely failing
-the river running through Bressel is anmed the Chanset, ‘gray waters’
-the Pastlands are strange no matter where you are, but the difference between the journey through them in Bressel vs in the Islands is really interesting
-two hundred years past, Bressel fashion favored dress-like frocks
-’mola ras’ is Tanarian for the Spear of Stars
-Rhobous Doresh (Avinian) = Vampire of Light = White Lich = Eiden Rane (Tanarian)
-some of the monks and priests of Arawn refer to their undead scouts as ‘sixers’
-the Stotts and Helods founded Bressel; I’m curious as to whether or not they have anything at all to do with Minn’s family- Dennever Stotts of Gallador is her uncle
-the combat-trained members of the priesthood in Bressel wear gray with trim in colors that denote their rank and wear a necklace of the Hammer of Taim and a copy of the Ban Naden
-those from Narashtovik wear silver on black and carry black ribbons bearing the sigil of Arawn and of their own secondary god
-Winden spends most of her time in Bressel ready to fight just about anything
-Gladdic doesn’t appreciate Dante and Blays having conversations that barely contain any words bc they know each other too well
-in another life, Gladdic might have been an apothecary assistant to his older brother
-Barsil = Bressel, as the city is known in the Mists
-the Becoming = Worldsea
-the Pits correspond to the Split Crypt in the Mists
-Gladdic has been to Barden
-"Oh. Right. Well, I still want to study it." "Of course you do," Blays said. "If someone cut out your liver and tossed it on the ground in front of you, your first instinct would be to poke at it until you figured out how it works."
-the use of blood to track down a person by finding the link to the rest of their blood is a pretty regular occurrence, but you can use the same theory to track pieces of what were once the same rock, or to find the original tree a piece of fruit came from, which is neat
-I would really enjoy seeing more of these Rosetta Stone plaques (preferably one’s that aren’t warning signs on a cave of death but. yknow) with all these languages and older relations to Mallish and Gaskan and everything
The last 10-15 pages left me with so many questions and like half an answer, and I really hope at least some of them get answered next book.

THE DIABOLIC BY SJ KINCAID  ★☆☆☆☆
Nemesis is a Diabolic. Created to protect a galactic Senator’s daughter, Sidonia. There’s no one Nemesis wouldn’t kill to keep her safe. But when the power-mad Emperor summons Sidonia to the galactic court as a hostage, there is only one way for Nemesis to protect Sidonia. She must become her. Now one of the galaxy’s most dangerous weapons is masquerading in a world of corruption and Nemesis has to hide her true abilities or risk everything. As the Empire begins to fracture and rebellion looms closer, Nemesis learns that there is something stronger than her deadly force: the one thing she’s been told she doesn’t have - humanity. And, amidst all the danger, action and intrigue, her humanity might be the only thing that can save her, Sidonia and the entire Empire…
I’m not hiding spoilers because they’re a huge part of why I didn’t enjoy this book, so reader beware if you don’t want the plot to be spoiled for you This has been sitting on my shelf for a while now, and while I hadn’t heard too much about it, I really did look forward to it. I love the protector trope, and it was exciting to see that the body guard and the one needing protection were both girls for a change, it had a great set up for bloody battles, it sounds like everything lined up for me to enjoy this. They seemed to give me everything I wanted, and then ripped it all away.
GOODREADS
I was so excited when Sidonia was introduced. She not only gave off Big Gay Vibes , but Big Ace Vibes too! She doted on Nemesis, was overly protective of her despite Nemesis being the bodyguard, flat out said she had no interest in marrying a boy, or anyone else, unless it was Absolutely Necessary for politics, and got jealous when Nemesis wanted to try flirting with someone. Not even halfway through, and already I was headcanoning her as gay and ace. And then the first plot twist happened. Admittedly, I didn’t see this coming, and it was a nice twist, but they killed off Sidonia! The Token Gay was dead! Sure, it wasn’t confirmed, but every single gay person would read that and know she was gay, they wouldn’t need it spelled out. So yay! Another book where the One Gay Character dies! Bonus points, because she was also one of the only dark skinned characters too. Sure Nemesis changed her appearance to be dark skinned to match Sidonia, but she abandons that look when her disguise is discovered. Oh, but don’t worry too much, because Plot Twist Number Two is Sidonia is actually alive!! There is hope for us yet! She escaped the carnage shortly before it happened, on a hunch that something was wrong with Nemesis. Except then she was killed again. Yup, she’s badly poisoned in some conspiracy plot by the Antagonists, and right before she dies, she confesses her love for Nemesis. So we have a canonically gay character of color, who has now died twice in one book, to move the plot forward. Yes, I’m angry. This would have been a decent book otherwise. Sidonia’s death and arc in general is what dragged my rating down so much. It’s like representation was dangled in front of us, only to be yanked away at the last second and that’s not fair at all. The plot was twisty but not awful, the characters were predictable, but well balanced, this could have been a solid three star book if only Sidonia had lived, or they added more characters of color and queer characters to the mix. Her death overshadowed everything that could have possibly been good and made me nitpick everything that was bad. There was one character, Gladdic I think? Who just up and disappeared. He seemingly had some important role at the start, and then we just never heard about him again. Tyrus was so obviously faking his insanity, that twist was lackluster, the attempted date rape when Nemesis first gets to the palace was unnecessary, this book was really a bit of a mess. The visuals were nice. I loved the idea of the party scene where everyone was dancing in zero gravity, even if by that time I was so done with this book I didn’t care. There were a few bloody scenes, but nothing extraordinary. Nemesis rips someone’s heart out, but Sidonia was dead so I couldn’t bring myself to care. This is not a book I’d recommend to anyone, at all, for any reason, and I have no interest in reading the sequels or even Kincaid’s other series. This has soured her work for me, and unless someone who’s reading tastes I trust 100% tells me they’re good, I’m not touching them.
