Fairy Tale Allusions in Yugioh 5Ds
So I was rewatching 5Ds and Akiza's duel against the knight dude got me thinking about the fairy tale allusions in her design and arc, and thinking about it more got me to realize that 5Ds actually has a lot of loose fairy tale allusions throughout it. So here are just a couple of the ones I noticed:
Akiza in general: Akiza's first duel of the series was already really heavy with the knight vs. witch symbolism. It also got me thinking about the "Princess, Witch, and Prince" theme from Revolutionary Girl Utena. A very basic rundown of what Utena says on it is that people will try to sort women into a box of good (Princess) or bad (Witch) based on how much they conform to the concept of what a girl should be like, a good Princess has to trade independence for protection from a Prince, any girl that doesn’t agree is a Witch. Problem is that no woman is ever just one of those things at a time, and Akiza definitely isn't. She is at first feared for her power, labelled the evil Black Rose Witch, and attempts to find comfort and safety in her "Prince" (Sayer). Only when she meets Yusei and the gang and finds acceptance from them and her parents do we see that she's actually a very kind girl. And even then, she doesn't go trading one Prince for another, she's never as reliant on Yusei as she was with Sayer and maintains her independence. Also just her deck in general carries the theme with fairy tale-like imagery (roses, knights, witches, fairies, and a dragon).
Akiza + Yusei: These two are basically Beauty and the Beast. I am a major faithshipping fan, but even if you take out the romantic aspects, it still fits. Yusei being Beauty and Akiza being the Beast for obvious reasons. The scene with Yusei waking Akiza in the hospital also gives major Sleeping Beauty vibes as well (this scene also owns my soul).
The rose imagery also still fits with both of them.
Yusei: He's Cinderella: he's a poor boy, goes to a ball that he wasn't supposed to go to (Neo Domino), has to leave at midnight (gets arrested), but leaves behind a "glass slipper" (the mark of the Crimson Dragon) that makes it so that the prince (Godwin) can track him down and give him another shot at freedom (not for altruistic purposes of course, but it still fits).
Jack and Carly: Scoopshipping are The Little Mermaid. The mermaid (Carly) falls in love with the prince (Jack), but for certain reasons, they cannot be together. Said mermaid makes a deal, by trading her soul, she gains legs (Dark Signer abilities + duel runner) which allows her a second chance to go after the prince. But the prince rejects her proposal (because she's undead and evil now), and the mermaid concedes. But being unable to hold up her end of the deal, she turns into sea foam and dies (turns into dust and dies).
Leo and Luna: Luna's deck already has a loose fairy forest type theme (and in the manga, has a Fairy Tale archetype). I want to say they're Hansel and Gretel. Has the same beats of two siblings getting lost in the woods (Luna with her spirit world adventure, Leo dueling Devack with "Closed Forest" up). But most of it comes from their duel with Devack, in which Hansel (Leo) stalls the witch (Devack) for as long as possible until Gretel (Luna) can kill the witch by pushing him into the oven (win the duel). You could also say that Luna's arc of freeing Ancient Fairy Dragon has elements of Rapunzel (saving the princess from the witch that locked her up).
Those are at least the ones I noticed. I doubt all of them were intentional but it's interesting when you make the connections. Let me know if there's any I missed because I'm not done with my rewatch yet and don't have anything for Crow. Feel like Team Satisfaction and Neo Domino City have Wizard of Oz parallels, but haven't got enough info to say how yet.

504. The Macys Thanksgiving Day Parade, 1981, part 2
(part 1)
A sleepy Superman.
I love Regis saying "Hi, Mr. Hooper, you look great!" to the Sesame Street float.
FINALLY. Something interesting happens. Two actors from Hill Street Blues got out of their cop car and sang a song about NYC and dance with Ed. This is what I'm talking about. This is why I watch these old parades. This is my favorite part of that parade.
Ed says gruffly "Who are YOU?!" to Strawberry Shortcake. He shows her a parade from the past in super fast motion. Because? I don't know why. She said the parades where she lives are short?
Aw, its Stephen Nedoroscik.
Wait, I think I need this little girl toy that shows you where to put what eyeshadow where.
Here we go, flying too close to the sun with the microwave. Are those persimmons in with that chicken?
I am just not feeling the vibes of this parade yet, I had to climb in bed and take a two hour TikTok break about thirty minutes in. They're giving Regis nothing to do, he's just standing on the other side of town going "oh, there's smokey the bear. Across the street is the natural museum of history where I went a lot as a boy".
"Hey Reege, can't you see that I'm on my coffee break?" Nah, it's just the cast of the off broadway musical Pump Boys and Dinettes. They made it to Broadway the following year! There was also a TV pilot filmed but it didn't go past that. Aw, they only sang their theme song.
I found a screw up! Susan and Bill Hayes from the soap Days of Our Lives was supposed to sing a song about the parade, well they either missed their queue, or the music messed up, something. They had to restart their performance! I've never seen that happen with the parade. Susan is wearing Strawberry Shortcake's hat.
I love that Gregory Hines is having fun and singing directly AT the camera. This is almost a Quik Bunny "Try to Remember" situation from 1990. Seriously though, Sophisticated Ladies might me my 2nd favorite part.
Ed sings again! I think this is the same song he sang last year, but this time he sings it with Kaleena Kliff from Love, Sidney.
D0nny Osmond (he was only 24!) was the star on the turkey that year.
I don't understand why NBC is making their TV starts sing SO.MUCH. Even Kim Fields and Nancy McKeon from Facts of Life had to sing. Tootie had to sit in a kangaroo! Dave Winfield the baseball player sang too?!
Ann Miller sang to a teddy bear while on a dollhouse float that was leaning a lil. DonMcClean's float was shaking pretty wildly too.
Kermit made it! He looks good!
and then Kermit and Fozzie nearly committed car terrorism.
Underdog almost knocked some people out too.
There was an Opera rendition of Hansel & Gretel, which wasn't too great, but we got this witch!
Kool and the Gang came in on a giant butterfly!
Ok, so the good copy from New Orleans runs out at 2 hours, so if you wan to see the rest of the parade you have to watch the meh copy from Richmond, VA. You guys are welcome to watch the rest of the parade, but the video quality and sound quality is really bad. I can't even enjoy the old commercials they're so fuzzy. If anybody can find me a full copy that is in ... viewing condition? put it in the comments. If its before Thanksgiving, I'll watch it.

Plotting out Disney's future: the Reinvention Era
I had so much fun reimagining the renaissance era to now, so I thought I'd imagine Disney's future era--but I'm skipping the sequels for now; I'll probably add them to my revival era post (if I keep using Tumblr through the years). This post is unique however, since this isn't me placing it within my reimagining AU; this post is based on the real-life success (or lack thereof) of the Revival era. I chose this name because I feel like Disney realizes they haven't been pushing themselves as much with their stories recently, and they want to appeal to a fanbase whose been adoring their classic stories while still wanting to explore new subjects. I'm not gonna do the whole "they were successful" or anything; this is mainly just ideas. Just to note: I imagine pretty much all of these as musicals, even if that's not super realistic given Disney's release style. And please forgive me if my ideas don't vibe with the culture I wanted them to represent.
Yaksha--Deciding to reinvest in fairy tales, Disney opts to revive "Gigantic," a take on "Jack and the Beanstalk." However, given that their last two musicals have explored Spanish themes ("Encanto" being Colombia and "Wish" being set in a Mediterranean country influenced by Spain), the idea that "Gigantic" is set in Spain is eventually abandoned. When Fawn Veerasuthorn is brought on as director, she suggests a Thai take on the story, with stories like "Sang Thong" and "The Twelve Sisters" as inspiration. The story follows a young man named Chaison (technically Chai Son) who ventures to the lands above where giants abide as a child, and is subsequently raised by them for several years. However, when some giants wish to conquer the land below (having been banished long ago), Chaison must play peacemaker in order to prevent a war. To better showcase the culture, Disney opts for a 2D approach, though they haven't gotten entirely back into the groove of using it.
Sweet Heart--Disney decides to try again with the director/screenwriting team of Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, as well as having Stephen Schwartz make the music to give it a renaissance feel. In it, the protagonists are fraternal twins, young adults whose designs are said to have been influenced by concept art from "Frozen" and "Tangled," with open admissions of the film's vibe being inspired by Disney Channel's "Gravity Falls." It's possible the names of the leads would be changed, but let's pretend we keep them the same here. Hansel would be the younger twin, much more optimistic and a bit naive, while Gretel is more practical, reeling from the loss of their mother and resentful towards their stepmother for wanting them dead. The witch would be very much inspired by Lady Dimitrescu, the Other Mother, and Winifred Sanderson, making for a scheming, unhinged, and occasionally funny villain.
Midnight Masquerade--Given the success of a 12-member family of "Encanto," the fairy tale of "The Twelve Dancing Princesses" is the next focus for Disney, directed by John Musker and Ron Clements. Originally thought to be adapted as-is, focusing on 12 sisters and an older (40s) solider, but eventually a mixture of executive and audience feedback led to certain script changes. The number of sisters is instead reduced to 6 to better focuses on the sisters as well as having more characters outside of the sisters, and the soldier is written as a young prince in his 20s (he's characterized as a bit cheeky and playful, but wise and somewhat neutral; he doesn't rat on the princess' magical world, and instead enjoys himself while he's there). The story focuses on the young man who is asked by the king to find out where his daughters go every night, and follows them to a magical land fraught with beauty and danger (pretty much the main concept of the story, more or less). The young man's dark hair and his love interest's red hair (inspired by Daphne Blake, specifically her portrayal by Sarah Michelle Gellar) could liken to a modern version of Ariel and Eric. For better or worse, for some reason I imagine Disney going for a radio-pop sound like "Encanto" and "Wish"--though I hope it's executed better than the latter. And for another weird reason, I imagine this film being set in France--albeit in a similarly vague way as "Beauty and the Beast." Needless to say, the title of the film is tied into the Disney doll line of the same name.
(Not 100% sure if the art here is AI; just thought it was really pretty and wanted to use it as a visual aid)
Weaver--Originally planned with a male protagonist, Disney opted to make the protagonist female in order to cultivate a similar response to "Moana." Similar to how the latter film was influenced by Fiji, Samoa, and Tahiti, this film takes influence from Guam, Kiribati, and Palau. The focus is on a young woman who ventures on a great adventure to find the spider of creation (inspired by the Kiribatu god Nareau) after a malevolent force begins to unravel the world. As you can see, the plot itself was inspired by "Moana," with execs guiding it that way for profitability.
Khoeli--Inspired by "The Boy with a Moon on His Chest," the story revolves around a young man named Khoeli, who ventures to find his birth father, a king who supposedly abandoned him as a child. Though on his journey, he must contend with obstacles that his wicked stepmother has put in his path to prevent their reunion. I could imagine music by Donald Glover and Kendrick Lamar, though concern about it sounding too urban instead of traditional might be a concern (I'm imagining a high fantasy setting, but perhaps it could be somewhat modern, taking cues from "Black Panther"). While billed as a Southern African-influenced story, the music and visuals do have panafrican elements, and Disney markets it as their modern "Hercules." I also like the idea that Khoeli's moons (a full moon on his chest, and crescents on both his shoulders) are the product of vitiligo; feels like it could be great rep for people if done well.
Crest--Based on the fairy tale of "Catskin," the story is about a young Native American woman with a cloak made of a giant Stellar's Jay. Given that Stellar's Jay is native to western North America, I imagine the tribe that our protagonist (who I'll call Ayamis) is from comes from that area, but this is still set in a fantasy setting, allowing for more flexibility when designing the culture. The giant cloak was given to her by her mother, who promised that it would help her in times of emergency by transforming her into whatever form was necessary at the time. Usually this just turns her into a normal-sized Stellar's Jay, and eventually she ventures to a new land after dreaming of protecting a white fox. Though this seems to be Letaiyo, the albino son of the local (Hopi) chief, who she falls in love after being appointed his spiritual protector.
Verdant--Inspired by "Gawain and the Green Knight," a young boy who fails to defeat the king of Spring is taken in and raised by him in order to learn the rules of chivalry, honesty and kindness, the things that make a true and honorable knight. It's a journey of self-discovery, of duality and different perceptions of morality and that there may not be such a true universal take on "right" and "wrong." The film draws on influences from Tomm Moore films, as well as having a bit of a classic Disney charm--gold to bronze era-charm, not renaissance charm (though that could also work).
(Art by FaQy on deviantart)
Rainstar--Influenced by the superhero craze, this film would focus on a female superhero with super strength and durability (generic powers, but it's the character who makes the powers, not vice versa), influenced by bubbly superheroines such as She-Hulk and Rogue. In the futuristic city (imagine a cross between Republic City and Gotham), she defends the town from outside threats, but recently she's been the target of a superhuman scientist (influenced by Mister Sinister as well as anime characters such as Fu and Deku) who wants to find out the origins of her powers, whether she likes it or not.
(Note: I actually started to make a post for this film exclusively a little while ago with characters, song titles, and such, but I've since trashed it and wanted to mention it here).
Kitsune--Let's assume Hayao Miyazaki is still alive and he's able to reach a compromise between maintaining a Disney vibe while allowing him significant creative control of the film he's directing. I don't know his style well enough to say whether this would be in his wheelhouse, but I'm thinking of a story about a man who ventures who find his missing wife after she is taken by mysterious fox-masked beings, using the fireflies to guide him on his journey. It could also include elements of the Japanese tale of Shippeitaro.
Charlie Bone--Based on an amazing (and underrated) series about a boy who discovers he can travel through pictures and goes to school with kids of other unique abilities, I'd love to see this adapted by Disney. I don't know if they'd want to age him up (he starts off as 11, so it almost gives off Harry Potter vibes) and whether or not they'd want to just adapt the first book, but in my own opinion, I feel like they could make a film that encapsulates the entire work, if they wanted, including details like discovering what happened to Charlie's father, Billy's terrible adoption, Emma's brainwashing, etc. Though I do think that the book series kinda buried the lead with the Red King (who ended up having a prequel series) as well as waiting a few books before we got to the REAL big bad. There's a lot to unpack, but I think they could condense it.
Kingdom Hearts--Kind of. The lore itself is too big for one film, but let's say Disney wanted a better anniversary film than "Wish" and was able to work out a deal with Square Enix, but only enough to use KH-original characters, not Final Fantasy characters. However, the directors decide that they don't want it to feel too gimmick-y, so they lean into original story elements with Disney motifs and references, with the story of Sora exploring different worlds being reinvented as the protagonist exploring his country in order to find his friends. While a bit of a downer, a plus side is that there's more focus on Anselm and his goals. And I'd be perfectly fine if they needed to get separate actors to do the singing (I want the OG speaking voices to return so bad!)
Lemme know what you think! I'll probably come back to edit the details later, but lemme ask: would you watch these Disney musicals?

Stories Stories Stories Masterlist
Your dreams took you back in time as you saw yourself at Sarah's house, your best friend in your teen years and the one you saw Harker kill when Jareth had showed you the memory of it.
It was a typical weekend afternoon of tarot cards and witchy stuff that she was into and it also happened to be Halloween, the night she went missing and the day you unknowingly met Jareth the goblin King for the first time. Back then, you didn't believe in all that voodoo stuff so much, although you remembered how your mother did. Sarah though, was all about it, a witch herself and you didn't realize the truth of it all until almost seven years after her death.
For some fun and a break from taking care of your sick dad, you would go to her place to let loose since it was right next door. The night would consist of pizza, sneaking booze from her mom's pantry since she worked in the evening, and cranking up the music while Sarah filled the room with candles and would give you readings. As skeptical as you always were about it, strangely they always became relevant to your life at some point, but you would just chalk it up to be a coincidence.
As she laid the cards out one, she placed the last one in front of you. The high priestess that held the letters B and J on it.
"Sooo, what does that mean?" you asked with an arched brow.
"The high priestess is a card of mystery, stillness and passivity. You need to reflect upon your situation and trust your instincts to guide you though what is to come. Things around you are not what they appear to be." Sarah explained, but then she just stared at the card with a head tilt.
"What things? My instincts tell me my life is exactly what it looks like...all fucked up."
"No...something is....amiss...now and into the future. I've drawn this card for you before, but it never spoke to me util now."
"Sarah, my dad is terminally ill with only a few years to live if he's lucky. That's what's amiss and that is the future."
"Jo, no...you're taking things literally, which sometimes the cards can be but sometimes they have deeper meanings, metaphoric even. I know you don't believe this stuff, but I'm telling you there's something huge about your life and your future. You see this?" she said and pointed to the lady on the card.
"Uh yeah...it looks like a queen or something. Oh my god Sarah?? Am I going to become the Queen of England??" you jested and laughed.
"No!" she scoffed. "But...you will be of some great importance. Something magical and powerful. The half moon at her feet tells me that. I know you never believe me, but I feel it in you. The witchy vibe. I mean come on, why do you think you and I connected so well. I believe you're a true witch who just don't know it yet."
"Yeah umm we connected so well because you live right next door." you chuckled. "I can't even make toast without burning it. I am far from a powerful witch."
"Jo, seriously. You even said your mom was into this stuff....and christ, look how your dad dresses and speaks, like he's from another century or something."
"She was, but I never saw her twinkle her nose and make things happen or ride a broom stick, or lure little children into her house like Hansel and Gretel. My dad, he's just old fashioned. Are you saying he's a witch too??"
"There are male witches you know. They're called warlocks and can you be serious for once? That's not what witches are all about. That's all fairytales. This is real."
"It's all hocus pocus if you ask me, pun intended but ok fine...so I am going to be some witch queen is what you're saying? Who's my King? He better be hot! And what do the letters mean?"
"Well...I definitely feel the J resembles you but...."
She stopped and cocked her head again as she ran her finger over the B.
"But???"
"A...counterpart to you...soul mate of some sort maybe? I keep seeing the word....missing....and...child....a baby maybe??"
You hysterically laughed. "The B stands for baby? I certainly know I am not pregnant...oh god!! Wait! Am I going to have a baby with my future King??? If anyone is missing, it is him! Maybe his name starts with a B! Oh my fucking god, it Bon Jovi!! That's what the B and J stand for!"
"Stop it! It's not that! It's someone you will meet. They will have the answers you seek."
"I'm not seeking anything right now except to get drunk after my encounter with that creepy guy on my way here. Like, he knew my freaking name so I umm, kinda told him my name was Sarah."
"Oh great, now we have some weirdo stalking around here infatuated with the many looks of David Bowie that knows BOTH of our names now and he probably saw you come here because I saw him from the window when you were walking over, and he saw me too. Talk about going all out for a Halloween costume and I didn't like his eyes."
"Calm down, he's probably just some senior from school out trying to score free candy like they did in Hocus Pocus, which is why he knew my name."
"Yeah well, he wasn't carrying a trick or treat bag and he looked way older than that. Def a witch vibe on him too. Probably into some cult shit and will sacrifice me tonight. Speaking of weirdos, tonight for dinner, you will meet the dude my mom is fucking, some Phillip guy. He's def creepy. I get nothing but bad vibes from him, like the hair on the back of my neck stands up when he's around. Witches sense those things."
"Ok miss superstitious, you are not going to be burned at the stake tonight or sacrificed on some stone slab in the middle of the forest. I have an idea. Since you seem to think I am a witch, we should look for our third and fourth to complete the circle, like that movie the Craft. You can teach me how to change my hair color to blonde like that girl did, what was her name...oh that's right, it was SARAH.." you joked some more.
"Fine, mock this all you want. Even the song playing right now is a message. These things don't just randomly happen."
youtube
"So when all of this happens, always remember this day and always remember, things are not always as they seem...remember Jo...remember....remember....remember....he's alive...."
Her words reverberated and echoed as your eyes sprung open.
"Sarah??" you gasped as you sat up. "God, what the hell was that?" you asked yourself out loud.
You realized it was late afternoon and that you had been asleep on Lola's sofa since you had come back from seeing Garrett. You hoped he wasn't upset with you for making him leave but you weren't sure what Narcisse and Haldir were going to do after seeing you locking lips with the vampire. Although Garrett was under Amara's protection mark, you didn't know how far that protection went and didn't want to test the waters to find out. You also knew Garrett could hold his own against them or anyone for that matter, but you didn't want to see any of them get hurt.
You sat with Leean, feeding her and as you did so, you began to recall the song Sarah mentioned, so you softly sang it to her, for she was a witch too and already coming into her powers at the mere age of 5 weeks old.
"I walk in worlds that no one can come by. I seek the trees and whispering stones. I dance at night and sing to the firelight to wake the witch who lives within me. I run with wolves and howl at the pale moon. I conjure storms that no man can tame. I love with fire so red it consumes you to wake the witch who lives within me. Music charms me like a spell. Voices fill me with tales to tell. All the women burned before are burning in my soul. All my darkness, all my fears fall away when their ghosts are near. Chanting, dancing, calling me to wake the witch in me. I sought the trees to flee all who hurt me. I whispered spells to endure their stones. I hid in dreams so no one could find me to veil the witch who lives within me. And now I fly at night like a raven. I dance with ghouls and devils till dawn. And in the forest, I’ve found my haven to wake the witch who lives within me."
Leean's big round moonstone eyes danced through yours as she listened to your voice. Little coos came from her daddy's shaped lips as she suckled and lightly kicked her feet.
Just then, a knock sounded upon the door. You already knew who it was, for your intuition told you and...you could smell the peppermint seeping under the door.
"Jo...may I come in?" Narcisse softly asked.
You covered yourself and carried Leean with you to the door, fretting that you were about to get an earful over the kiss of the vampire, but strangely, it was the exact opposite.
As you reluctantly opened, there the warlock stood and his typical grin with his hands resting at his midriff as his fingers fidgeted with his ring like always and there at his feet sat his loyal companion Merlin staring up at you.
"Well there's the two most beautiful girls in the world....and one of them has a most angelic voice from what I just heard, wouldn't you agree Merly?" he said in a baby tone as he tickled Leean's cheek. Of course, she cutely responded with an all out Thranduil smirk, making your heart shatter and ache for your King.
You turned and went to lay her down as Narcisse followed with his faithful feline right at his heels, who then jumped on the sofa making himself right at home as he laid down and yawned.
You gave the Maine Coon some quick chin scratches and then went over by the window and sat down.
"Well...let me have it about Garrett, I mean, that is why you are here, is it not?"
He smiled his arrogant smile and sat down beside you."
"No, actually I am not here about that, although I must say, I don't know what you see in him, the vampire is so boring."
You rolled your eyes as he continued.
"I came to tell you that I have retrieved your belongings."
He pulled out the spell book from within his jacket, along with the record and the dreamcatcher, then laid them beside you.
"The book was found in Claude's room and beside it laid a doll made with hay from the stables, smelling of my horse."
"Oh...gosh. Stephane, I am so sorry. It's all my fault, if I hadn't been in possession of the book, that never would have happened."
"Nonsense. The only fault here lies upon Catherine for her dastardly deeds and possibly her daughter too, which she will soon be questioned after she recovers from giving birth. Claude's diary was found as well and I have a pretty good feeling the answers are in there. I will read over it soon...but if you will notice the bookmarked page in your book. I think that explains the spell on Garrett."
After giving a concerning look, you quickly opened it to see the page stained with a yellow tint. You then looked at him in confusion.
"It's warlock blood, but still man's blood to a vampire and in this case, dead man's blood. Asher's. I can smell it. Somehow Catherine got her hands on it after his death. I have reason to believe she used Claude to place the spell. With that said, it is the same as if Garrett would have drank it himself."
"Jesus, what is it with this bitch and poison?"
"Because that's what Catherine is. Poison. Now...if you'll turn to the back, you'll find another item you were looking for...."
You flipped it to the back to find the letter you wrote to Thranduil.
"Thank you Stephane, for all of this. I will do better at keeping this book out of the wrong hands. I'm glad to have my dreamcatcher back as well."
Narcisse noticed your despaired expression when you mentioned the moonstone sleep aid.
"Jo? What is it?" he asked as he gently laid his hand upon yours.
'"It's...I don't know really. I had fallen asleep earlier and had this strange dream of...well actually it was a memory my friend Sarah who Harker killed. Honestly, I don't want to talk about it. It's my fault she is dead. I should have never left her that night, but I had to get home to my dad. The really fucked up thing is that she had cracked a joke that evening about something happening to her and of course I basically told her that she would be fine."
"You don't have to talk about it. I will say, I am sorry about your friend. She obviously meant a lot to you. And again, it is not your fault...it is Harker's."
"If only I had believed her about her witch sense and all. She figured out who he was that night and that is why he killed her. All the years I knew her, she was a witch just like me, but I didn't know I was and I made fun of her for believing she was. What a shitty friend I was."
"Jo...please don't be so hard on yourself. You were so young still and had no idea who you were. I wish I would have been around more for your dad, maybe I could have done something, or figured out what was going on. If only I had known he was sick."
"Stephane, you obviously had your hands full with Catherine and the situation with Charles. It's no more your fault than mine. You're right. It was Harker's and even my mother's. Jareth too. You would have been there for my dad if you could have. He knew how much he meant to you. You were a good friend to him. Hopefully we can find him soon and fix whatever Jareth has done to him."
"You're too kind Jo. We will get him back. I promise you. I really should get going. I have a birthday party planned for you this evening. I figured you need a break and need to unwind."
"Ummm what??"
"Your birthday, remember? I know it's not actually until tomorrow but I'm too excited about it to wait. And...it's such a beautiful December day, strangely warm as usual which makes it perfect for a nice outside gathering. What color fireworks would you like this time. I had them do purple for you at the last party...that is your favorite color is it not?"
You were completely mind blown over his attentiveness to your likings. He had told you before that he paid attention to the little things.
"I...I...you...did that? for...me?"
"I did. So...purple again? I had a cake made too. It's 25 candles now right?"
Your hands went to your face, covering it as you began sobbing.
"Jo...sweetheart. What is wrong?" he kindly asked and pulled your hands down so he could cup your face in his.
"I...I haven't celebrated my birthday since my seventeenth one, which was the last one with my dad....and he died...well supposably died the next morning. He..he still, in his sickness, made sure a cake was delivered for me, candles and all....and also had a dinner sent to the house because he knew I couldn't cook for shit....and...and this would have been my first one with Thranduil...."
Narcisse offered the most compassionate smile. "I will cancel the party. I apologize for overstepping. I just thought something of some normalcy would make you feel better...."
"No...don't apologize for being nice. You went to all this trouble for me..so it's the least I could do to attend my own party. Purple...yes...and please don't put that many candles on the cake. One will suffice so I can easily blow it out."
"As you wish your majesty. Now...I do have one other reason I came here. You promised me a date sometime. Maybe tomorrow? An afternoon carriage venture along the countryside by my villa?"
"I...umm...well..."
"It's Garrett isn't it? Is someone making you spend time with him?" he sarcastically asked.
"No one makes me do anything and you know it. And honestly, it is none of your business."
"Tell me then, is it my business when just the other day, you were kissing me?"
"Ok well you kissed me."
"And you kissed me back. It scared you didn't it? What you felt, so you turned to Garrett instead. But you, you came clear to the city to try and stop me from that fight. You care for me whether you admit it or not. You and I, we are the same Jo. Both witches that share a rare electrifying sensation when we touch. We empower each other."
"Maybe so...but this is all a game to you. You even said so yourself once, that you like games. I cannot trust what you say is real. I feel this is all just about winning to you, especially over that of a vampire. as if I am some prize...and he does not make me feel that way. I know him...I don't know you."
"Then get to know me. Give me that chance to prove that my feelings for you are genuine. What I said is that I had never had a worthy opponent. I will not deny thinking of you as a prize because you are just that and I would be the luckiest man to ever be able to call you mine. A winner indeed of true happiness that I have never experienced. All that I have done and am doing is because I have come to deeply care for you. This is all new to me. I know in the past I have come across as a seeker of victory but I assure you, that is not the case with you. Since our eyes first met, I wanted more. Much more. I have felt your approach long before you ever arrived."
Narcisse certainly knew how to choose his words, but you knew he meant them. He wasn't wrong. You did feel something for him and yes, you were scared. And you didn't want to hurt Garrett because you felt something for him too. Your dream made sure you faced that. You were just flat out scared to move on because this isn't where you were supposed to be, having to choose between two men. You were supposed to be with Thranduil forever, for he was your only choice.
"I'll tell you what. I will not hold you to your promise, for I know you were just trying to keep me alive at the time. Wear a flower in your hair tonight and if you do, then I will know you have agreed to share a date with me tomorrow. There is fresh new array of them in my office that the servants brought in this morning. I would love to spend your birthday with you. I must be off. It is time to serve more retribution where it is due."
Narcisse got up, offered you a head bow and then left.
Who crossed Narcisse this time? you wondered as you sat where he left you and stared out the window.
Lola then came in and her presence helped aid you in your decision for tonight.
"Lola...how would you like to join me tonight with Leean for a party. It is a beautiful day out and you are always stuck inside."
"A party miss? I was not aware that there was one."
"I was not either, but Narcisse was just here and informed he that he was hosting a birthday gathering for myself."
"It is your birthday? How wonderful..but...why do you not look so eager to attend? Oh how foolish of me to ask such a thing. Of course I know why. My apologies."
"No Lola, it is quite alright. I truly need to face reality and stop wallowing over what will never be again. Besides, he went to all the trouble to do something so nice for me when I was certain after what he saw today...well that's not important. Will you come? I hear there will be cake....and fireworks, although I don't know if that will startle Leean. That will probably be around her bedtime anyways. So what do you say?"
"Of course my lad...Josie. I would love to attend."
"Perfect. I need to do something first. Will you stay with her?"
"You know you do not need to ask. Of course I will."
"Maybe you could pick us both out something to wear while I am gone?"
Lola smiled and nodded, then you left for Stephane's office, still pondering over whether you would wear a flower or not, but you decided to go look at them anyways, for anything floral made you think of Thranduil.
A beautiful rainbow of flowers in a large crystal vase sat on Narcisse's desk just where the sunlight shone in to feed them. Cleary there must have been a greenhouse on the grounds for they couldn't be from the gardens in the middle of winter, but then again, as Narcisse said, the weather was strangely warm...and you did see a purple one sprouting from the ground a few weeks ago after the ice storm.
Of course you chose a violet beings that it was purple. You put it in your hair and stood at a mirror to see how it would look, but all you could see was the memory of the vision you had at Lestat's of Thranduil in the mirror. You closed your eyes and turned away, trying not to cry again.
As you took the flower out of your hair, you stood there and just inhaled it's scent, reminding you of how you would sit in Thranduil's gardens for hours when he was out tending to his Kingly duties. How you missed his Kingdom. Would you ever be ready to go back? You knew you needed to. It was Leean's home...it was your home...and you missed Legolas something awful and surely he was missing Leean if not you. You needed, wanted to make things right with him, but could you? Knowing how he felt about you now and how hurt he was. And why couldn't you hear him anymore? Did you just imagine it all?
You began to leave when something caught your eye on the desk. It was the doll made of hay that Stephane mentioned they found in Claude's room. Out of some strange intuitive feeling, you picked it up and looked it over....and then, something happened that had never happened to you before. You saw a vision.
Arion, standing alone in a place of darkness with a mangled mane and he turned to look at you as if he saw you. His eyes were so sad and lonely.
And then the darkness began to fade and you could see the surroundings. A place you didn't recognize but appeared to be some sort of desolate dungeon standing at the edge of a forest.
You gasped and dropped the doll and ran off to find Narcisse. As you turned a corner, you almost ran into Charles who was coming out of his chambers.
"My lady? Where are you off to in such a rush and why are you out of breath and look frightened??" he sincerely asked.
"Charles...you know the grounds here well, do you not?"
"I..I do yes, why?"
"Is there somewhere around here that is desolate...another dungeon maybe? A big round stone structure by a forest??"
"Umm..y..yes I believe so? A bit south off the back side of the castle. It hasn't been used for years. Why would you ask of such a place?"
"Can you take me there??"
"N...now?"
"Yes, please Charles!"
"Josie, what is this all about??"
"Just take me there. If my vision is true, I am about to make your father the happiest man in the world."
After saddling up some horses, you and Charles galloped off down a discreet pathway behind the castle and headed off into the woods. Roughly twenty minutes later, you came to a clearing and at the other end of it was the stone building you had seen on the edge of a cliff, hidden behind the forest.
"Wait. Stop!" Charles loudly whispered. "There are guards?? Why are there guards at this run down place?"
"Because I believe your mother has something valuable to your father locked up inside of it. I'll take care of them."
"With what? Magic? My father has rules about magic used on his guards. Trust me, I just got an earful about it this morning."
"Fuck the rules." you quipped and rode off.
"I'm going to be in so much trouble...." Charles whispered to himself with wide eyes and took off after you.
"Halt! What business do you have here? This area is forbidden." One of the two guards said as he walked towards you with his sword drawn.
You dismounted and fearlessly walked up to him as Charles jumped down and followed.
"There is no need to draw your weapon on a lady!" Charles snapped. "I know who you are and you know who I am. Exactly what business is it that YOU have here at a deserted dungeon??"
"That is classified information young warlock. If your father wished you to know, you would not be questioning me. Now move along."
"I take no orders from you! I demand to know what is inside, for I feel my father has no knowledge of this at all!."
"I said it is forbidden." the guard snarled and took a few more steps towards the both of you as the other guard then joined him.
"What are you going to do if I pass? Kill me? My father will have your head if you harm me or Josie."
"I will not harm you...now the girl on the other hand means nothing to me...but...maybe for a small price, we can work something out? I have not had the pleasure of a woman in a very long time."
"Nor have I." the other guard said with a twisted grin.
"And I can see why you disgusting oafs. Narcisse will have your heads either way for I know what is inside. His beloved horse. Arion."
"What??" Charles strongly asked as he whipped his head to you.
"That's right. Arion is not dead. Your mother stashed him here to make your father suffer by making him believe she killed him and fed the horse to him. I'm sorry Charles but I told you Catherine was sick. Now, let us pass or..."
"Or what??" the guard laughed. "See, now we have a bigger problem. You should have minded your own business. We cannot let you go now...my lady." the guard said, bearing a sinister smile as he neared you.
Just then, something swarmed him. It was so fast that you couldn't even see it...but you smelled the gush of wind that burst over you....Garrett.
The man backed away in panic, nearing a steep cliff that held only massive sharp rocks below at the ocean's edge. He was stormed again, but this time you saw something you had never saw of Garrett before. He appeared from a swarm of bats and raged in the man's face, causing him to lose his balance and fall backwards, screaming to his death below.
It all was happening so fast, you and Charles were frozen solid as you watched the horror unfold before you.
Garrett charged the other one with his fangs in full view, something else you had never seen on him before, and then he bit into his neck and ripped his throat out.
The man fell to the ground and frantically scurried away from Garrett, ending up being backed against a tree.
Garrett leaned over the horrified man and bit into the other side of his neck, killing him instantly.
Your terrified gasp caught Garrett's attention and he froze, keeping his head down. He then slowly opened his blood soaked hands and looked at them.
Garrett's hands began to shake and his breathing became heavy.
"G..Garrett?" you squeaked as you took a step towards him.
"Stay back!!!!" he growled. "You...you can't see me like this..."
You ignored him and slowly crouched beside him, gently placing your own shaking hand on his shoulder. Your touch startled him and he quickly scooted away, keeping his back to you.
"I said stay away! This...this wasn't supposed to happen...they...they were going to hurt you...I could hear their disgusting thoughts."
"Garrett...it's ok. Please look at me."
"No! I...I never meant for you to see me like this. I can only imagine what you must be thinking. I heard your fear...I can smell it as well."
"Garrett...I...I'm not afraid of you, I was just taken by surprise. They were bad men Garrett...this...this is what you do to those kind of people."
"But you weren't supposed to see it! Not ever! I lost control...I...I'm so...sorry....I...I'm so ashamed..."
His voice was breaking as if he were going to cry as his entire body was now trembling.
"Garrett talk to me...Did...did something happen to cause this?"
"I...I'm a monster Josephine! Just like I always told you I was. That's what caused this. You...you need to stay away from me. I...I don't belong in your world just like everyone has told you."
"Garrett, stop talking like that. You are not a monster! They were the monsters. If you hadn't have come, even I myself would have hurt them. I was going to set them on fire. Does that make me a monster too then? Garrett, please...look at me...let me help you."
"Have a great birthday party and date with Narcisse." he softly said and then his scent rushed through your hair as he vanished.
"Garett wait!!!!!!! You don't understand!!!"
You turned to see Charles still frozen solid with wide eyes and shaking.
"Charles, it's ok. I know him. He wouldn't have hurt you. He was only protecting me."
"Even so, he's...a vampire...on our lands...he just killed two of our guards. I...I have to tell my fath..."
You ran up and grabbed him. "No! You cannot tell Narcisse about this, ever! Do you hear me?? He will have Garrett hunted and they will kill him and I will not let that happen! Those guards were evil and you know it. If Garrett hadn't killed them, I would have...and so would your father if he were here!! But the fact that it was a vampire won't matter to Narcisse, especially that it's Garrett. Please Charles, I'm begging you. I...I care about him...very very much."
"I...I don't know Josie. I think you should just tell him so he does not find out another way. He would understand that the monst...sorry, the vampire was only protecting you...and judging by the way my father looks at you, I would think that your safety would be all that mattered to him. Do you not trust him?"
"I...I want to...but...I just can't risk Garrett's safety...not after all he has ever done for me."
"If..if I stay silent, how will their deaths be explained?? It's quite obvious from the one's wounds what killed him. My father will eventually know they are missing and have them searched for."
"Then they shall not be found."
"W..what?"
You turned to the dead guard and flung your hand out. It ignited into flames and you showered it over him, setting him ablaze.
"There. No more evidence. He will burn to ash. As far as the other guy, he wasn't wounded. It will just look like he accidentally fell if he is found. As far as Narcisse, he only needs to know we found Arion here, nothing more."
"Jesus. Remind me to never piss you off. Alright. I won't say anything...but if I am asked...I will not lie to my father."
"Ok...I can deal with that. Thank you Charles. Now, let's go get Arion."
Sure enough, the snow white horse was inside alive and well, but seemingly depressed and in untidy conditions. His eyes lit up when he saw you, for he remembered his first meeting with you....and of course he knew Charles.
"It's alright now big fella. I am going to take you home where you belong and that wicked witch will never harm you again." you assured him as you lovingly stroked his nose.
He tilted his head and nudged it into your chest, making snorting sounds which had you and Charles laughing. Strangely, it was the first time you had ever heard the boy laugh and you felt slightly guilty for berating his mother in front of him. You understood exactly what it was like to have a love hate relationship with a parent.
You brought the Lipizzan horse outside and let him drink from the canteen you brought, then let him snack on an apple while you tried to untangle his neglected mane. Once he finished his fruit, you both took him back to the stables where the other horses were overly happy to see him as they loudly greeted him with many different pitched neighs and hoof stomps. You spoke with the stableman, asking him to see to it that Arion was pampered, cleaned up and well fed. You also told him to have him ready for a surprise tomorrow and to keep his return a secret until then, for Arion needed a good nights rest in the comfort of his home. After giving the gentle giant a kiss upon his nose, you then left to get ready for the party you were definitely not in the mood for after the recent events, for all you could now think about was Garrett, who was ignoring all of your calls to him. He obviously had heard your conversation with Narcisse and that is what had triggered his anger.
As you and Charles arrived back at the castle, there was a large gathering of of guards and horses in the court yard, along with some man lying on the ground.
"Oh look, Narcisse is serving punishment to one of the guards who caused you trouble the other night in the dining hall. The other guard knew of what would come, so he fled, but he will be found soon enough and pay for his involvement. Come, let's go watch!" Charles eagerly said and trotted off.
How quickly the boy went from referring to Stephane as his father while defending him, then right back to addressing him as Narcisse when it came down to business.
When you walked in, the man on the ground was being tethered by his arms and legs. He saw you and your eyes locked.
"Please....I was never going to hurt you, I swear it! I...I had too much to drink. I shouldn't have said such vulgar things...I...I'm sorry my lady!" he cried.
You gasped in horror, looking all around for Haldir but he was not there. You then rushed up to Narcisse, who turned to you and explained what was happening.
"Do you know why they bind him at up the arms and legs? For a good clean break...or they can do it the other way, at the hands and feet...which do you think would be more painful?"
"Stephane, you cannot be serious? Please, stop this now!"
"Why on earth would you want me to stop? You know how things are done here when it comes to harassment of women, especially you. I had my men stoned to near death as equal punishment over harming a bird, so certainly you must know that this offense would deserve a far worse punishment, for men like Asher should not breath at all."
"The...the crow..." you muttered, wondering where your feathered friend had been since then."
"Yes? I was told by witnesses that it was a black bird when I caught them just after the heinous act of hurling rocks at it. How did you know that?"
"Because that crow is my friend who has saved me many times from danger. He came to me that night, barely able to fly and covered in blood. I had meant it speak with you about it but so many things were happening. He told me, well, he showed Garrett what happened to him, but Garrett said he saw that you had returned from the city and were handling the situation. I'll have you know, the bird would have died if it had not been for Garrett. He healed him when I could not."
You defense of Garrett was another attempt to make Narcisse see he wasn't a monster in case what happened earlier with the guards was ever revealed, but of course, Stephane's response only proved your efforts pointless.
"Ah yes, the infamous heroic vampire saves the day once more. Well...for the crow's sake and yours, I am happy he was saved. Why was the bird here anyways?"
"He's a messenger and my guardian of sorts. Usually he has something to tell me or bring to me. He is how I had gotten my moonstone back. I guess he knew I needed it or something."
It then be became clear to Narcisse that, that is where Thranduil's letter came from that his guard found nearby one the ground that night. The crow somehow knew the Elvenking was alive and brought it here to tell you.
"Can we get back to what's happening here Stephane? I understand you have rules and beliefs and whatever but...I was the victim and I am telling you, it was only drunken words. He does not deserve to die over it. He is sorry, you heard him,...and I believe him. Please, punish him some other way."
"He is only sorry because he is about to be drawn and quartered. Carry on." he then said to the horsemen as if your words meant nothing.
They began moving the horses, pulling his arms and legs nice and taut as the man screamed in sheer terror.
"Stephane Narcisse!! This is not you!!! I thought you believed the spell had been broken?? This is a disgusting vile act!" you shouted in one last plea to save the man.
"Tell me something Jo...your King has done similar and even far worse things to those worthy of their punishments and you did not have a problem with that, so why is it that you have a problem with how I operate things here?"
"I never said I liked it and many times, I told Thranduil how I felt about it, not that it's any of your business, and many times I was able to get through to him because he had a good heart inside of him that only I or Legolas would ever see....and I have seen that heart inside of you. This man does not deserve to die and if you go through with this, you can shut that party down and kiss your date goodbye, and me for that matter, for I will not stay where death takes precedence over what is right. You told me you were not a soulless animal now prove it!" you reeled with your own nose flaring like that of your Elvenking's.
Stephane's bright blue eyes softened and he turned to Bash and nodded at him to stop.
"Release him and take him back to the dungeon. This is your lucky day Rossif." he said to the warlock who mouthed the words 'thank you' to you with tears in his eyes.
"Will I...see you tonight then? Hopefullllly with a flower in your hair..."
You wanted to say no and you wanted to still be mad at him...but you couldn't and it drove you crazy that this warlock lord was growing on you.
You simply nodded with a light smile and left.
On your way to the front entrance, you sensed someone familiar. A vampiress and only vampiress that smelled of baby powder. Selene.
As your eyes scoured for her, you then caught sight of the dark haired vixen standing on the edge of an empty loading dock where she could easily dart off over the Rhun if detected.. Discreetly, you snuck off and made your way there.
"Selene?? Oh my god...." you raved as you stepped onto the dock and then ran to her.
She braced herself for the impact of your bear hug, laughing as you pounced upon her.
"It is soooo good to see you again! I have missed you immensely. Is everything alright? What has brought you to the danger zone?" you asked with a chuckle.
"Well I have certainly missed you as well, my only human friend and I wish this was just a social call but..."
"But? What's going on?" you asked in wariness due to the irresolute look in her ice blue eyes.
She reached into the pocket of her black leather pants and pulled out a small piece of folded paper, then reluctantly handed it to you. Dithering to open it, you slowly unfolded it and softly read it aloud.
"This is the hardest thing I have ever had to do. I am leaving Devil's Island. You will not see me again. You know you and I could never be and I cannot bear to look you in the eyes again after you saw the real me. I would rather be truly dead than to feel this kind of pain. Hopefully I can make that happen. The dumbest thing I ever did was fall in love with you but it's the happiest I have ever felt. I will carry the memories of you with me until my last breath. I am so sorry I have ever hurt you. I love you. Forever. Goodbye my little one....- Roman"
"This...this is a joke right?? He's just going to leave me??"
You crunched up the letter in a fury and walked to the end of the dock, shouting out into the sky.
"You promised!!!!"
"I..I'm sorry Josie. I begged him to change his mind but he wasn't having it and he wouldn't tell me what happened."
"I'll tell you what happened. Garrett's a fucking LIAR!!" you screamed back at the sky again. "He can't leave anyways, he has my..."
You stopped yourself, because no one but you and Garrett knew about your moonstone's whereabouts.
"You mean the gem? He told me where it is in case you needed it. Don't worry...I will never tell a soul."
'Wow, well I guess he thought of everything didn't he. I guess this means he really is leaving...I...I..."
You could feel your chest tighten as a panic attack threatened to consume you.
"Josie??"
"He...he leaves me now, when I need him more than ever....he's gone." Tears filled your eyes, blurring your vision. "Well I guess he made my choice quite easy for me....although it would have been quite simple."
"Choice?"
"I would have chose him....."

So I was watching Dylan B. And it dawned on me. Ansi is from the 80s. The 80s. She's from that generation where they came up with those weird food concoctions like throwing cheez whiz into cornbread. And yet she'd be there doing it too 😭.
Whenever the three of the 3 of them are hanging out at HQ or just vibing on Hobie's boat she'll bake something. And at first it starts off with your typical 80s treats like monkey bread or some blondies. But sometimes she'll walk out of Hobie's kitchen looking like she's holding toxic waste with the biggest smile on her face.
And it's always a gamble on what you're gonna get, because sometimes her baked goods, while unorthodox, are actually really good. Nobody thought the Velveeta cheese fudge would've turned out well but they were pleasantly surprised. Sometimes though she makes things that are so foul that Hobie, I'll eat anything, Brown debates throwing it overboard after she leaves. (Diane probably has Hobie poison taste test before she tries anything and even then she's skeptical because of his Britishness.)
They give her their honest opinion for each thing that she makes as calmly as they can without hurting her feelings. And since she's trying to learn how to bake using her own groceries they don't have the heart to stop her. However, Ansi is straight up banned from making jello salad because of all the vile concoctions she kept coming up with.
"I thought adding pickles and olives to the jello would give it a more balanced flavor."
"NO."
(You have to know that I saw some of the most horrendous meals while searching up examples. I know there was a whole crack epidemic going on but weren't people coming up with good ideas back then? WHY ARE WE PUTTING THESE THINGS TOGETHER? ASPARAGUS CAKE. ASPARAGUS 😭😭😭😭)
This ask had me WEAK as hell because I imagine Diane eating every sweet like
Being all GREEDY because she loves food. The first one in the kitchen like 'what's this now' and she will try to rope people into it if she can!!
Plus like...never letting the British rest when it comes to food
Hobie is all hesitant and she's like 'Weren't you eating spotted dick yesterday'. 'You're bugging out, it's like Yorkshire pudding and all that.' Then she stands there waiting for him to eat it even though she was the one who was all excited to try jhhfjjdkf
And when she does like it the house Never gets quiet for there. She's all "Yeessss, snaps to this!!" or going "Okay, chef!". Everytime Ansi come in the room she's complimenting her (with another piece in her hand)
But on the inverse, since Diane LOVES soul food and is so greedy her food is A LOT.
Everything need Adobo and Larry's and Old Bay Seasoning. (Yes all three) Everything needs butter. Salty as hell and if it's spicy it's damn near too hot to taste.
She loads up the plate with cornbread AND yams AND mac & cheese, then hands it to them like it's lunch. Why'd she make so much goddamn collard greens? Wakes up in the morning like 'ya'll want sum grits and shrimp?" Ma'am it's 9am.
She makes all this heavy ass buttery food, eats the whole thing then looks at Ansi and Hobie like
"Ya'll not hungry?? - I'm hungry. This is good food - Hobie you okay you ain't finish"
and it's like yeah cause it looks like you deep-fried this burger in lard the man has heartburn
Pavi says she's tryna fatten everyone up like the witch from Hansel & Gretel but she's just trying to make sure everyones soul is FED OKAY
#who eats candied yams with lunch? Well she made Ansi candied yams as lunch#spidersonas#spidersona#spiderman#spider man#hobie brown#atsv#across the spiderverse

FEA character mini-analyses: golden deer as wonderlandians
Here is part 3 of explaining why I cast characters the way I did in FEA (my ongoing 3H/EAH crossover fic)! Part 1, about the Black Eagles, is linked here, and Part 2 on the Blue Lions is here.
So the Golden Deer are special... in that I had to make up a third category for them (since apparently Roybels were never made a real thing, thanks for nothing Poppy). I call them "the Wonderlandians" but only half of them are from Wonderland... It matters not.
Without further ado, let us begin!
Hilda as Kitty Cheshire: you can't look at Hilda Valentine Goneril and tell me she wouldn't make the perfect Cheshire Cat. Kitty excels at getting people to do what she wants them to do, and though Hilda's brand of manipulation isn't quite the same, it's close enough. She's more exuberant than sly, but she's also lazy. See? Everything balances out.
Lorenz as Lizzie Hearts: just turn up Lorenz's voice to max volume, make Riddlish his first language, and there ya go. Overbearing, arrogant, and noisy, all in one go! Replace red roses with red hearts and you've got a man. Okay, but really, Lorenz would take his destiny very seriously--and no doubt be a subject of Claude's relentless needling for it.
Marianne as Rosabella Beauty: what more needs to be said? Our sweet, animal-loving little lady + the curse of the beast = daughter of Beauty and the Beast. There is nothing more to be said.
Lysithea as Ginger Breadhouse: with such a major sweet tooth, Lysithea couldn't be anyone else's kid. Okay, she could have been Hansel or Gretel's kid, but I wanted her to have Edelgard parallels so being the daughter of a witch makes more sense. No, I couldn't include her backstory in this setting, but did I give any logical explanation as a replacement? ... Also no.
Ignatz as Bunny Blanc: Ignatz has bunny vibes. He doesn't seem anywhere as anxious as the White Rabbit, but his shyness suits the image of a rabbit. They even have the same spectacles!
Leonie as Jillian Beanstalk: Leonie has that scrappiness that makes me think of Jack, so... let's say Jeralt in this AU was a famous giant-killer...
Raphael as Tiny: first of all, Tiny deserves more appreciation, and second of all, I couldn't think of any bodybuilding fairytale characters. Raphael is genuinely such a sweet guy who just wants to live a good hearty life, and that's what I imagine the giants are like before they go all fe-fi-fo-fum.
And that, my folksies, is that! Okay, I'll admit I was even less logical with this group of castings... but can you blame me? It's the Golden Deer.
Lastly, but definitely not least: the house lords, Rhea, and other miscellaneous characters!

Horror/pop culture influences to the Hatchetfieldverse
As a disclaimer i have not listened to every talkback or livestream in its entirety and this is not in any way meant to be The Definitive, Master, Absolutely The Only Right List list. this is just me sharing some horror knowledge and where I think influences lie. please feel free to add on to this list!
The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals: The biggest connection I can make is Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) about aliens taking over the bodies of humans as part of a plot to invade earth. where the term "podperson" comes from
Black Friday: I know the premise is based on the real life Tickle Me Elmo craze in 1994. (people trampling each other for the doll) in terms of pop culture the evil/haunted doll is a trope as seen in Chucky (1978) and Annabelle (2014). Wiggly is an eldritch being, the black and white, the cults, madness (we'll get into eldritch later)
Nightmare Time: So many nightmare time episodes give B-horror vibes and I love it
The Hatchetfield Ape Man: what B horror is made of. I love how retro this one feels even as it takes place in the modern day timeline (Ted and Hidgens are in it, there's a mention of texting and Ted's pornhub premium account, and yet Lucy feels like a such a period character) feels like an old B creature movie (the creature from the black lagoon comes to mind)
Watcher World: to an extent haunted amusement park is a trope (hell its in classic scooby doos) loved ones turning on each other and possesion/influence is seen in a lot of paranormal horror (the conjuring 2, the exorcist) illusion based horror is done really well is Mike Flanagan's Oculus (2013)
Forever and Always: the android and the clone plots feels like classic SF. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep/Blade Runner (1982) Philip K Dick style sci-fi.
Time Bastard: the song itself is a James Bond tribute. a time loop is a great storytelling frame that can cross genres, although the ImplicationsTM always hover around horror. Groundhog Day (1993) is the classic timeloop example, if more lighthearted.
Jane's a Car: this is Stephen King all the way baby. Christine (1983) is novel/film about a killer car, the owner of said car's growing obsession with it, and the cars violent protective but deadly nature
The Witch in the Web: this is trickier for me. the witch is an ancient trope and Willabella Muckwab is a classic witch in the woods. I mean thats fairytale, Hansel and Gretel, luring children stuff. Hannah as a psychic child, and a very powerful one feels very Stephen King, (Eleven from Stranger Things is the same type of character)
Nightmare Time Two
Honey Queen: In terms of the relationship between Linda and Zoe, Death Becomes Her (1992) comes to mind. theres just something about the ruthlessness of these two antiheros. also Gerald is a plastic surgeon much like the male protagonist of that film
Perky's Buds: okay the weed turning birds sentient i can't speak to but birds in horror is a trope for sure, Hitchcock's The Birds (1963) is perhaps the most famous. The Hatchetmen being portrayed as an insular dangerous hillbilly family is also a trope, seen in The Hills Have Eyes (1977) and Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
Abstinence Camp: Ah, the slasher. quintessential modern horror. Abstinence Camp is probably most like Friday the 13th (1980) with both the summer camp setting and the focus on the chastity (or lack there of) of the teenagers and that being the reason for their deaths. (other famous slashers being Psycho (1960) Halloween (1978), and Scream (1996))
Daddy: Peter pan syndrome or the forever child reminds me a bit of The Orphan (2013) though I admit that's not exactly the dynamic here. creepy child forcing a relationship is the twist in Ginger Snaps 2 (2004). cults spring up ALOT in hatchetfield, specifically the idea of wealthy elite worshipping the lords in black in exchange for power. this is an eldritch trope, as seen below.
Killer Track: satanic rock music or music that drives teenagers to the devil is an old panic. In terms of pop culture the premise of the cursed song itself (listen and you die unless you force other people to listen) is The Ring (2001, for the American remake) in The Ring a cursed video kills the watcher in 7 days, unless they show the tape to someone else.
Yellow Jacket: children fighting in death matches is popular now because of The Hunger Games, although the dystopian tropes roots of this is seen earlier in Battle Royale (2000) or The Long Walk (1979) (hello AGAIN Stephen King).
hatchetfield in general: the spooky town/weird town/horror town is a personal favourite trope of mine and hatchetfield qualifies. also seen in Welcome to Night Vale (2012) and the cartoon Gravity Falls (2012) to name only two. Also the ever iconic Twin Peaks (1990)
eldritch horror: the center of hatchetfield lore is the Lords in Black and they're eldeitch horror, that is massive, almost unknowable and incomprehensible extra-demensionsal beings whose scale and power to humanity is like an ant and a boot (we're the ants). explored in the works of HP Lovecraft (most famously The Call Of Cthulhu) but an enduring branch of horror in its own right. Common staples include another dimension(s) where the creatures are from (the black and white in our case) , cults worshipping the Beings for power (the starry children, Linda's wiggly cult) and madness or a corruptive influence. a great modern example is The Magnus Archvies
other influences: saw a Mariah Rose Faith tweet that said she was watching Evil Dead and could see the hatchetfield influences and yeah, the Evil Dead (1981) trilogy is very campy, very self referential horror with a starkid like sense of humor (there's a Toronto musical version Evil Dead Live that is Very Starkid, its infamous for having a "splash zone" where if you're an audience member sitting in those seats you WILL be covered in fake blood)
scream, similar to above, very meta, mixes of comedy and horror.
bonus: Hey Melissa: while not exactly the same reminds me of Misery (1990) about a woman who comes across her favourite author in a car accident, she rescues him and cares for him...and then won't let him leave. body horror, capture, obsession its all there. also based ON ANOTHER STEPHEN KING BOOK GOD DAMN IT.
what horror do you see in hatchetfield? what did I miss? let me know!
EDIT: Nerdy Prudes Must Die: Bullied teenagers getting revenge on the popular kids who tormented them: Carrie (1976 for the film) (what's up Stephen King, pull up a chair), also Heathers (1988). A group of teenagers covering up a bad thing they did and being picked off by the person they wronged is also a trope, seen in I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) Nerdy Prudes is also the first stage show to include The Black Book. The black book, a grimoire or spellbook of edrtich knowledge reminds me of the Necronomicon. The Necronomicon was introduced to pop culture by HP Lovecraft, it appears in multiple of his own works, and then later in works by different creators, including The Evil Dead films. Lovecraft loved the idea of the Necronomicon appearing in other peoples work, as it built up a collective horror/eldritch mythology within our culture. Its appearance in so many works, has cemented the Cursed book/Book of The Dead/within pop culture.

S5 Ep 15 Pt 2: Don’t Trust Anyone Who Wears a Floor Length Robe Over Their Casuals in Yugioh
Hey, it’s my birthday, so I’m gonna release this early because the rest of today I just have to work like an adult and that’s no fun.
In the first half of this episode we dunked the worlds smallest plane into a lake and so this second half of the episode involved the kids running as far away from their only responsible adults as they could.
Which like...took whole of less than a second for them to peace out and enter mortal danger.
...I’ve never been in a jungle in India but...I have seen the Jungle book many times...and there’s like tigers and stuff in there, right? and tons of monkeys that are hella mean? And freakin snakes? They sing jazz and scat? That’s some terrifying stuff.
Like these city kids have to learn at some point to fear the woods. But they just freakin don’t. And strangely, the most dangerous thing in these woods isn’t even a snake or something, but a human man just being as suspicious as possible lying prone on the ground.
(read more under the cut)
The card cultist happens to have a British accent, because this voice acting team freakin loves to pull out their British accents. It’s not as lowbrow as Valon, but it’s not as...well whatever Bakura is supposed to be. He’s a lot more tame than Bakura’s, but still very British.
I don’t know if this is because British English tends to be taught instead of American sounding English in many parts of India, but, most likely they just wanted to do an accent. And like...he’s an archeologist...and so the stereotype is there...but honestly, the decision of making this guy British gets weirder and weirder as this episode goes on, get ready for it. None of you are ready for what I assume is the very obvious plot twist of this freakin guy.
Catfish of the century, this freakin guy, I’m pretty sure.
Yugi immediately believes this completely out of place white British stranger in the Indian backwoods next to this inaccessible lake and immediately thinks “yes, my Grandfather crash landed in India EXACTLY where I’m standing right now, and now I must save him.”
Thankfully, Yami exists to gently and politely tell Yugi to hella stop.
Also, I like that Yugi has finally stopped wearing his school outfit out of school. But, he is instead wearing a jacket that is so close to his school outfit I honestly couldn’t tell until the end of this episode. It’s like...I think one shade more purple, it has white piping, and his undershirt has a center seam. It’s nice Yugi has 3 versions of the same black sleeveless undershirt, and this show cares enough to show that tiny factoid about Yugi’s closet.
So, because Yugi is a dumbass and Pharaoh has to just sit back and watch this happen so he can say “told you so” later, they follow this random cultist they found in the woods. Much like Hansel and Gretel, we snack on cake crumbs all the way to the witches house, which in this case, is an undiscovered monolith you would have easily seen from outer space.
HMMMMMMMMMM.
And so get ready for this:
Hey guys.
Remember how Alexander the great was buried in a pyramid?
Now because they’re name dropping Alexander, that’s actually kind of helpful, because Alexander the Great’s favorite damn horse in the entire world died while he was at war with India so he named a city after it. It’s believed to be in Punjab, which is in the Northern part of India
Which means we first of all, definitely crossed the tallest mountain range in the world to get here, and also means that we are like...in some really disputed territory of India right now, and it is crazy that these kids went here for a vacation completely unsupervised.
Another fun fact about Alexander is that when he died, it took 6 days for his body to decompose. At the time, they thought it was because he was a God (or in Yugioh’s case, Extremely Cursed) but nowadays historians think it’s because it took him 6 days to fully die. He just wasn’t dead yet. Had to give it a minute and the ancient Babylonians just got way too excited.
Anyway, Alexander super died in Babylon so I don’t know what the hell he’s doing in India. There is a fun spot in History where his body did get dragged to a couple different places, meaning we probably did lose the original Alexander and there’s a lot of people just guessing at where he ended up...but putting him clear up in India sure was a choice when one of his assumed burial sites was literally Egypt, which would be a more fitting location for a Pyramid and a more fitting location for this show.
Especially since Alexander was trying to invent a new race and culture...it seems a little strange he’d be buried in such a massive pyramid, but maybe he got a really, really good pyramid deal from the funeral home when he was like 28 and just figured he’d change it before the time he died at 32.
Which...now that I’m older than 32, how crazy is it that Alexander the Great died at freakin 32? You blink twice and you’re 32. Is history seriously trying to tell me this guy wasn’t like secretly 62? That maybe he just celebrated his 20th for like 20 years in a row as a royal mandate? I just feel like history is playing pranks on me with Alexander.
Anyway, our weird shady new archeologist guy is named Alex and so take that as you will.
I sure hope Alexander the Great was revived to wear khakis and bother children. Guy conquered the world once and was one of history’s Freakin Worst so he does deserve it, but also...it would explain why he thinks it’s normal to wear a Darth Maul robe over your business casual.
Anyway, lets enter the obvious trap pyramid.
Joey just wanted a nice time running around Northern India. He just wanted to eat some yummy chaat and look at some tourist destinations and maybe glance at a Bollywood star or two. But instead he’s gotta deal with spike floors because Yugi couldn’t say no to a cultist.
Also...one of those spikes clearly went through Tea’s feet, right? And she is absolutely fine? Just checking on Tea’s godlike strength and clearly it is still godlike.
Alex gives us a very long explanation of how he went upstairs and Grandpa went downstairs, and there was a door or something so Alex turned back around and Grandpa was gone.
All of those steps were probably plot relevant and I’ll probably forget all about it in 2 episodes.
The thing is Alex...literally thinks he evaporated. Literally thinks that. But how do you disprove it to this freakin guy who like...might have named a city after his horse once and thinks that’s a normal and acceptable thing to do?
and so Joey immediately leaps onto the haunted playing floor.
the way Yugi said this line was sort of hilarious to me so I may cap it. If I remember to do it (I’ve been a little busier lately, with things opening up, as you can tell because my update schedule is in the toilet.)
So, if Joey jumps in...everyone else has to, also.
And we say good bye to Alex and enter the new forest zone, which looks a LOT like the other forest we were just in.
Nice Protoss armor.
We get some hijinks from the local wildlife, which are all cards but real (but not real because we’re in a board game...don’t think about it) and the off brand Sheikah tablets have helpful monsters in them if you touch em.
This season may have been better off as a video game, being honest.
Joey has gone somewhere else, despite going onto the same game tile, and he’s too busy on a mountain range to really help anyone out. So he’s just gonna vibe up here for a bit.
Tea got up after this point and said along the lines of “k, what’s next?” Because mortal danger does not affect her and she fears nothing.
At a beach somewhere, Tea and Tristan spend some quality time together forming a new family with whatever these creatures are.
And Tea’s love of her winged angel comes full circle and now I will suffer this winged orb for the rest of this arc, pretty sure.
Please admire the number of belts on Tea. Her outfit is like max 00′s and I appreciate that. We’ve had a lot of questionable fashion on Yugioh, but they actually dressed Tea pretty on point this arc. Like I often feel like 00′s fashion is hard to define or describe, but it’s Tea right now. That’s it. She did it, it’s right there.
Yugi gets a new flagship card for this arc, and this time it’s Celtic Guardian. Hell why? I feel like his defining card changes every single arc, and they need to like focus and just give him one. In fact, I’m pretty sure it’s still Dark Magician...and maybe the show forgot?
Anyway, if you just got here, this is a link to read the rest:
https://steve0discusses.tumblr.com/tagged/yugioh/chrono
I think I forgot that link in the last recap because yo it’s kind of been a while since I’ve updated, I feel. (well I had a graveyard post and those don’t count really) But, we’re back, we’re still going, slowly but surely.

kay, so, it all starts in a village of who the fuck knows time period (i’m pulling an ASOUE) with our main characters Mallen, Alice, and Padget (who is a dude (i don’t do straight people)). Padget has liked Mallen for fucking years, mind you. anyway they end up at this school (go to sleep in village wake up in academy) with fake memories. they go through one semester of their last year. first day of second semester they have to chose thin books, the books decide the legacy of the student (this is school for recreating fairytales once to originals fade from relevance) and that book decides their legacy. alice gets Cinderella, Padget gets the prince, and Mallen gets a stepsister (you know, the one who dies at the end (Mallen is a dude too, and Padget’s roommate)). anyway conflict happens because the whole first semester is the stereotypical love interest development where Padget has crush (that’s definitely new) on Mallen, and Mallen who’s demiromantic getting closer to Padget and developing feelings for him. but anyway the books contain the tale told from their legacy’s POV. Padget and Alice don’t know Mallen’s going to die at the end, and Mallen thinks they know. Anyway, the person who got the witch from Hansel and Gretel runs away from the school. They are caught (like the girl in the prologue) and brought back to the school. the headmaster erases their story, fuctionally killing them. their memory is erased from everyone at the school, and they’re replaced. but the fear of running stays because you can’t erase feelings. Mallen and Padget end up kissing and Padget says “I don’t want destiny, I want you” to Mallen (mallen up till then thought Padget wanted his destiny). anyway, Padget, Alice, and Mallen are called to Headmasters office and he asks them if they are happy with their legacy‘s. Mallen responds with a solid “fuck no” and the Headmaster subtly hints towards erasing Mallen. Padget says yes, because he wants to get the Headmaster off their backs. Padget later explains to Mallen why, and Mallen believes him (but the seed is planted that Padget might just chose his legacy over love). problems arise in quarter four when there’s a ceremony where they get a tattoo on their wrist signifying they accept their legacy. Mallen and Alice pretend to be sick to skip it, but Padget doesn’t because the Headmaster is already suspicous. Mallen hears and before Padget can explain he runs away leaving a letter that says, What happened to ‘I don’t want destiny?’. Mallen is caught and erased, but he pulled some magic shit to make sure Padget and Alice remember him. boom, they do shit and it turns out the book the Headmaster used to erase people did a whole fuck ton of nothing and it was the Headmaster the whole time. They kill the Headmaster (the bitch had it coming) and Mallen and h + g witch come back, but they only have memories of the village, not the academy
and then the book ends, yay! this was not two or three sentences
No it was not but I am vibing w/ this story.
I fucking. Love stories like this. Idk why but it's giving me like. Land of Stories (ik i haven't read it shut up) x Divergent vibes.
It's just. It's so cool and I love it.
How're you so good at writing oh wow.

Tommy names the Pigeon “Bob the Badass Bitch but I call him Harold” and he won’t tell anyone why
Man practices all his stupid lil skills there, like baking, sewing, ice skating (in the winter) he even takes up brewing cuz why not
The nearby village treats him like one of those spooky legends exaggerated to scare kiddos, and he’s seen as like the witch from Hansel and gretel, but really, when curious lil kids comes to check it out, he usually just vibes w them. Sometimes he’ll give them sum cookies or hot cocoa, sometimes he teaches them curse words, and when he’s feeling soft he’ll invite them in n tell them stories about the “fantasy” place called l’manburg, a place of freedom and hope
Tubbo and Ranboo visit at least once every week, and yeah at some point techno and Phil do get a lil suspicious at Ranboo, but they don’t ask any questions. Instead, techno follows them at a close, but safe distance to find out what’s going on. Yknow, like a normal person.
Puffy visits at least once a month for therapy sessions, she also just rly enjoys visiting him. She can see that the calmer environment is already helping him :]
Tommy just collects random trinkets he finds and decorated his hut w them. It ranges from pretty rocks to strange artifacts to a stick he found in Jack Manifolds chest and decided to steal
Techno somewhat visits tommy, but not like the others. The first time he followed Ranboo and found out tommy was just vibin in a swamp, he kinda just booked it. Next time he visited, he was noticed by tommy and they kinda just stared at each other until they left. It continued like this for the next couple “visits” until tommy left a cup of techno’s favorite tea at the door. It’s now a routine whenever techno finds the time to visit. They don’t know if this is exactly healing, since they still won’t talk and still kinda hate each other, but it’s progress
Tommy found a mooshroom cow just hanging around when he was lookin around, so he just brought him back home, and named him Mushroom Henry Jr. Tubbo, Ranboo, Micheal and puffy are the only ppl who know about him, because tommy doesn’t want to risk losing Henry again. (+ Ranboo was the first one he told about mushroom Henry because he remembers how Ranboo was there at Henry’s second death)
Tommy still sometimes visits the smp, just to check in w everything an everyone. He only visits when he’s feeling up to it, and has the energy to potentially experience a random battle or conflict, or just ppl hatin on him. There are still a few ppl he’s on no-speaking terms w, like Sam
i was vibing in the last bit until you hit me with the part with sam. owie. my awesamdad heart,,, it cracks /hj. no but this is super cute!!!!! i really like it a lot :] ur thoughts are always fluffy i adore ‘em

Dean x reader x Cas
For @schischi
Notes; The whole white witch plot is borrowed from Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunters.
Part 1 of 3
“Mom! I brought you your favourite coffee.” You called, locking your mother’s front door behind you. “I thought we could do a girls day. Mom, where are you?” You questioned aloud, putting the hopping bag on the bench.
You walked through the large house, checking every room on the ground floor.
“Mom!” You called, walking upstairs. “I know you’re home; I saw your car in the drive.” You said. Ignoring every other room, you made your way to her bedroom. An ear shattering scream left your body as you caught sight of your mangled mother in a pool of her own blood.
A series of loud knocks echoed through your home as you made your way to the front door. Upon opening the door you took notice of the two men standing in your doorway.
“Hi, sorry to disturb you Miss, I’m agent Banner and this is my partner agent Ruffalo.” The taller of the two introduced, both he and the shorter man pulling out their badges. “We just had a few questions concerning your mother.”
“Oh of course, I’m Y/N but you probably know that.” You said, opening the door and gesturing for them to enter. “I’m sorry the place is such a mess; I haven’t had time to tidy.” You told the two, feeling embarrassed at the disarray your home was home.
“It’s perfectly understandable given the events of the past few days.” Agent Ruffalo assured you, taking the offered seat on your couch.
“I thought I already gave a statement when I found her?” You questioned, sitting across from the two.
“Yes you did, we just had a few questions about your original statement.” Banner assured you. “Now when you found your mother, was there anything strange you noticed? Any odd smells, flickering lights or things anything like that?”
“No nothing like that. Everything seemed normal, I didn’t think anything was wrong until I found her.” You said, fiddling with your fingers.
“We understand you have a key to your mother’s home. Is it possible for us to borrow it? Check out the scene a bit more?” Ruffalo questioned.
“Of course, if it helps you find out what happened.” You said, rising to a stand. “Wait here a second.” You told the two and walked into the kitchen. You grabbed the key and walked back towards the living room but hid behind the door frame as you heard them talking.
“So what are you thinking?”
“I’m thinking it’s a deal, but we shouldn’t rule anything out.”
Shaking your head at the weird conversation you walked back in. “Found it.”
“Thank you very much, Y/N. We’re very sorry for your loss.” Agent Ruffalo said, taking the key out of your hand. “We’ll be in touch if we find anything.”
“Thank you. Have a nice day.”
“Hit me.” You said, tapping the bar.
“You look like someone who’s had a bad day.” The bartender said, pouring you another drink.
“Try bad week.” You snorted dryly, downing the drink quickly.
“Anything I can do to help you fix it?” The man offered, flirting in a not so subtle way.
“Not a chance bud.” You laughed. Offended by your rejection, the man walked away from you to serve a group of women at the end of the bar.
You’d been sitting in silence for nearly twenty minutes when someone sat in the chair next to you.
“I didn’t expect to find you here. I thought you were more of a drink at home type of girl.” Agent Ruffalo said, turning towards you.
“Well normally I would much prefer that but I’m all out at the moment.” You snarked, causing the man to chuckle.
“You okay, darling? You look a little worse for wear.” He asked you in concern.
“I buried my mother today.” You said, tapping the bar again. “And then had it pointed out by the town that I am entirely alone.”
“I’m sorry you had to do that alone.”
“Not your fault.” You shrugged, downing another shot.
“Let me buy you a drink, darling. You look like you could use one.” He said, flagging down the bartender.
“You don’t need to do that, Agent Ruffalo.” You insisted.
“I’m off duty Y/N, it’s Dean.” He smiled.
One drink quickly turned into four. You found yourself enjoying Dean’s company. You felt very comfortable with the agent, feeling as if you’d known him for years instead of a few days. The two of you sat at that bar talking about various details of each of your lives.
The two of you shared stories about your shitty childhoods, laughed at your crappy love life and talked about his successful relationship with his long term partner Cas.
“I love him.” Dean smiled giddily after his fifth drink. “I never thought I’d deserve someone like him.”
“You sound like you really love him.” You smiled at him.
“I do. He’s one of my soulmates.”
“What you have another?” You questioned, not thinking much of his phrasing. The man had had a few to drink.
“Apparently. We don’t know who our second is, but I know I’ll love them.” He mumbled.
“Dean!” Echoed through the bar. Turning around you saw Agent Banner making his way towards you. “Dean, I’ve been calling you for hours. We need to go.” Banner told him.
“Do you need some help, he’s had quite a few.” You laughed as Dean smacked his partner as he tried to help him up.
“Uh, no thank you. I’ve got plenty of experience here.” The tall man laughed somewhat tersely.
“Alright. Have a good night, Agent Banner. You too Dean.” You bid the two farewell as Banner managed to drag his partner out of the bar. “One more.” You told the bartender, tapping the bar once more.
One more and you’d go home.
One more, for your mother.
Bottoms up.
You awoke with a groan the next morning as the sun burnt your eyes. Your head was pounding as you forced yourself to sit upright. Another groan escaped you as your phone began to loudly ring.
“Hello?” You croaked, answering without looking.
“Y/N, it’s Dylan.” Your best friends brother greeted you. “I’ve got some bad news.”
“What happened Dylan?” You asked him, suddenly feeling much more alert and awake.
“It’s Emily. She’s dead, Y/N.”
Non-reader POV
“I’m telling you, Dean, it’s her.” Sam insisted. “It has to be her.”
“Sam, I have a hangover and don’t want to keep saying this, but it’s not her.” Dean said gruffly, massaging his temples.
The two had been arguing all morning. It was a continuous cycle of "It's her," and "It's not her."
"Give me one good reason as to why it can’t be her.” Sam demanded.
“Because she buried her mother yesterday. You didn’t see how torn up this girl was when I got there. And her friend just died. It’s not her.”
“So she’s a good actor. Hex bags were found at both houses, Dean.” Sam argued. “And that’s not all, four months ago her father died and guess what his body looked like.”
“Why would she kill these people Sam? You’ve got no motive.”
“Yes I do.” Sam said, quickly typing something into his computer. “Y/N was adopted. And six months before her father’s death she started going to therapy. According to the sessions notes, the father beat the crap out of her and the mother for most of her childhood.”
“Then why would she kill the mother and her friend?” Dean questioned his brother, still not doubting the woman’s innocence.
“The mother let it go. Didn’t report him. Maybe her friend found out.” Sam shrugged. “Dean, she could kill again, she’s already got three under her belt. We have to do something.”
“Shit.” Dean sighed, resting his head in his hands. “We’ll go talk to her again today. See if we pick up witch vibes, but I still don’t think it’s her.”
Reader POV
You couldn’t breathe. You couldn’t do anything as your mind raced and your body began to shake. After hearing the news on Emily’s passing you’d shut down. A part of you registered the what was happening around you but that part was loudly drowned out by your screaming mind.
Emily was dead.
Your mother was dead.
Your father was dead.
You were well and truly alone.
The bedroom lights were beginning to flicker. As your panic attack began to worsen you could see them flickering even more aggressively.
There was the sound of light bulb sharing before the room descended into darkness. You noticed but were unable to do anything.
Someone was screaming your name. You could hear it but you couldn’t do anything about it.
You couldn’t do anything and it was when your breathing became particularly difficult the world finally went dark.
Non-reader POV
“What do we do?” Dean questioned Sam in panic as he tried to get Y/N to break out of her stupor.
“You gotta make her breath.” Sam said, kneeling on her other side. “She’s having a panic attack.”
“Jesus!” Dean cried out in surprise as the light bulb shattered. Both men covered their faces as the glass scattered.
“Move.” A gentle voice commanded, startling the two brothers. Both turned at the new voice to see Castiel standing behind them.
“Cas?” Dean questioned as the angel pushed the two hunters to the side. The angel kneeled in front of the woman, who was struggling to breath, and pressed two fingers to her forehead. Y/N’s eyes closed as Cas’s fingers and promptly fell back on the bed.
“There is no need for your gun, Sam.” Castiel said, turning back toward the Winchesters. “I would suggest you stop playing with it.”
“Cas she’s a witch. That light show is proof. She’s killed three people; she needs to be stopped.” Sam said, trying to convince the angel.
“She has not killed anyone. I won’t let you kill her, Sam.” Cas said, narrowing his eyes at the tall moose.
“Cas what’s going on?” Dean questioned his soulmate. “Why are you protecting her?”
“For the same reason you want to protect her, Dean.” Cas told him, taking his hand. “She’s our other soulmate.”
Reader POV
When you awoke this time, you felt worse than you did before. This was no longer a case of a hang over, this was the after effects of a panic attack that took everything out of you.
You groaned as you got out of bed, all your muscles screaming as they began to move. Walking out of the bedroom and seeking the kitchen, you rubbed your temples in an attempt to sooth your raging headache.
Turning on the kettle you quickly popped two ibuprofen and took them dry.
“I see you’re awake.” A voice said behind you, startling you and causing you to almost drop your coffee cup.
“Who the hell are you?” You snapped at the unfamiliar man.
“He’s definitely not from hell, sweetheart.” Dean chuckled waking into your kitchen with his partner.
“What are you doing in my house?” You questioned, wrapping your arms yourself. “And, again, who are you?”
“I am Castiel.” The mystery man, Cas now, said. “And we’re here to help you.”
“Cas before you get into it, maybe we let her have some coffee. Or sit down.” Agent Banner cut in. Dean and Cas agreed with him and allowed you to make yourself a coffee. You felt a slight feeling of trepidation as you followed the three men into your living room but there was another part of you that felt at ease with the men.
“Am I allowed to know what’s going on?” You asked the men, sitting in the only single chair in your lounge.
“Before we get into this, we need you to listen to us before you decide we're nuts.” Dean said, giving you a serious face.
“Okay.” You said, clutching your coffee close. “One question, is this going to end with the three of you chopping up my body and throwing me into some dumpster? Because if it does, I don’t want to hear it.”
“Relax sweetheart, you’re not going to die.” Dean soothed. “First off, I’m Dean Winchester, this is my brother Sam. We’re hunters.” He said pointing to the tall man who gave you a smile and a wave. “We’re not your average hunters, we don’t hunt buck or bears, we hunt monsters.”
“We've been doing it for years, trying to protect the innocents.” Sam cut in. “We came to town because your mother’s death wasn’t under normal circumstances.”
“What do you mean not under normal circumstances?” You interrupted, unable to stop the question. Sam and Dean shared a look before Dean sighed.
“Your mom was killed by a witch.” Dean admitted. “And when we found out about Emily and what happened to your father Sam thought it was you.”
“You thought I would kill my family and friend?” You asked, narrowing your eyes at the long-haired man.
“I’m sorry, there was just a lot of evidence that I thought pointed to you. I should’ve looked into it a bit more instead of jumping to conclusions.” Sam apologized.
“Anyway, we came here this morning to talk to you about it but we found you having a panic attack. We couldn’t get you to calm down and suddenly your lights are flickering and the next thing you know, your globes shatter.” Dean told you.
“This is when I arrived.” Castiel said. “I calmed you and put you to sleep.”
“Not the best phrasing but could be worse.” Dean muttered. “Oh and Cas here is an angel of the lord.”
“Oh God.” You finally mumbled after a minute.
“No he’s not here anymore, he left.” Cas told you, making your eyes widen.
“Okay, suppose I buy this and don’t think you’re all nuts, why did all my light bulbs shatter?” You asked them, putting your mug on the table. “And why is everyone around me dying?”
“Okay Cas, you’re up.” Dean said, pointing to the angel. “And gently please.”
“Y/N, you’re not human.” Castiel started, making your eyes widen and the boys sigh. “At least not entirely. As I’m sure you’re aware you were adopted.”
“No, I was not actually.” You interrupted, choking on your spit.
“Ah, well now you are.” Cas said. Dean let out a sigh and Sam hid his face in his hands. “As I was saying, your parents were not your actual parents. I’m not sure who they were exactly but I do know your mother was a white witch.”
“So, I am a witch?”
“Yes, but not quite. Witches are people who sold their souls to demons, white witches are born. It’s passed on from mother to daughter. As angels We’re supposed to ensure the protection of white witches but over the decades, they have become a dying race.
Until now, we were sure they were all extinct. As it turns out your mother used a very powerful cloaking spell and hid you away. We hadn’t been able to locate you until today.” Castiel explained.
“Why would she cloak me and if you’re an angel how could you not locate me even through it?”
“As a white witch, you hold significantly more power than those who sold their souls. Your mother would have had to have used the last of her life force to protect you the way she did. That’s why we couldn’t find you. I'm not sure exactly why she cloaked you, but I would assume it was to protect you.” Cas said.
“So, what do you say, sweetheart?” Do you believe us?” Dean questioned you as you placed your head in your hands.
“Look I really want to believe you because I kinda believe it but there’s no physical evidence.” You said, looking up. “Is there any physical proof you have?”
Without another word Castiel’s eyes glowed a bright, supernatural, blue.
“Is that sufficient evidence?” He asked you, tilting his head to the side, eyes no longer glowing.
“Yeah, yeah I think that works.” You nodded. “Alright, I’m on board. He’s an angel, you’re hunters and I’m a witch. Jesus I need a drink.” You sighed, leaning back into your seat.
“Are you two going to tell her the rest of the news?” Sam asked the other two, a smug grin plastered to his face.
“There’s more?” You asked, face slightly paling.
“Oh yeah.” Sam smirked at his brother. “Come on Dean, you’re up to bat.”
“Fine.” Dean sighed, taking Cas’s hand in his. “The reason everyone around you is being murdered is because there’s a coven in the area that want you to feel isolated, so they can rip out your heart for a ritual.”
“What?” You exclaimed, voice raising slightly, as you covered your mouth in shock.
“You gotta tell her the rest, Dean.” Sam said. “She’s going to find out eventually.” He pointed out as his broker gave him a bitch face.
“Sam is right.” Cas agreed.
“Don’t you think we’ve dropped enough on her today? Do you want to overwhelm her?” Dean asked the two.
“Excuse me but I am right here and if I’m going to find out anyway, you might as well just tell me now.” You snapped, crossing your arms.
At your words Sam smiled and mumbled something you couldn’t discern; Cas gave you a bright smile and Dean let out a small chuckle.
“You’re defiently our soul mate, sweetheart.” He smiled.
A few seconds passed as you failed to register the words that left his mouth.
“Wait what?"

Grimmtober Day 18: Goose Girl at the Well
But how astonished he was, when she went to the well, took off the skin and washed herself, when her golden hair fell down all about her, and she was more beautiful than any one whom he had ever seen in the whole world.
--
This story is an ATU type 923, and is a bit tricky to follow as many things seem to happen at once. But that's part of the fun imho. It is told like so:
There was an old woman who tended geese in the wastes in the middle of the mountains. One day, when she was down in the forest collecting sticks, she came across a handsome count. She persuaded him to carry the bundle up the mountain, with nary a moment to rest though it seemed to get heavier and heavier with each step. Still the man went on without complaint. When they reached the old woman’s hut, they were greeted by the geese, and the old woman’s daughter — who seemed to be an ugly old woman herself.
The Old Woman promised to repay the count for his help, but sent her daughter away, for she would not have them alone together lest he fall in love with her. The man found the sentiment funny, and took a moment to rest under an apple tree. The old woman approached him after his nap and handed him a box cut from an emerald. She told him to care for it well for it would bring him good fortune. The count thanked her for the gift and set off.
He wandered through the forest for three days, unable to find his way out. When he finally made it to civilization, it was an unfamiliar kingdom. The man sought audience with the king and queen. He showed them the box, and the queen took it for a closer look. But when she opened it, she fainted. The palace guards grabbed at the count, but as he was being led to the dungeons, the queen recovered and asked them to release him, for she wished to speak in private.
The Queen told him the story of her youngest and most beautiful daughter, who cried pearls and jewels. One day the king wanted to decided how to divide his kingdom after his death. He called all his daughters to him and asked them how much each loved him. The eldest two compared their love for him to magnificent things, but the youngest compared it to salt. Enraged, the king banished her into the wilderness. He later repented and had the forest searched for her, but she was never found, and the king and queen thought her dead.
When the Queen had opened the count’s box, she had found a pearl that was exactly like the tears of the youngest princess. The prince then shared his story about the old women and their geese in the forest. The three decided they would find the woman and ask about the whereabouts of the missing princess.
That night the Old Woman’s daughter went to a well. It was a full moon night, and there she removed a skin cloak that was covering her, and she became a beautiful maiden. She washed herself and the skin in the well, before the sound of a branch startled her. She threw her disguise back on and ran to the hut. There the old woman told her that today marked three years since she had been taken in, and it would be the last day she spent with her. The girl was upset, for she had no where else to go, but the old woman simply sent her to her room.
Meanwhile the count had become separated from the king and queen. He happened to stumble upon the girl, just before she took of her disguise, and was prepared to set a trap for her, thinking he could force her to give up the whereabouts of the missing princess. But once she took off the cloak, he was enthralled by her beauty and could think of nothing else. In his dazed state, he broke a branch, which startled her. When she ran, he set off after her.
While chasing the girl, he reunited with the king and queen, and told them of what he had just seen. The two were certain from his description that this was their daughter. The three reached the hut together, and the Old Woman greeted them warmly. She told the king and queen that they could have spared themselves a walk if they had not been so unjust to their daughter. She called the girl from her room and the family wept for joy at being reunited.
The old woman disappears, and the hut turns into a magical castle.
The translations I have seen of this story all end the same way: with a not from the narrators saying there’s more to it, but the narrator's grandmother could never remember the end. They like to think the princess married the count and that the flock of geese turned into young hand maidens and everyone lived happily ever after. I’d like to believe that too. Something about this project, as dark as it can get sometimes, makes me want to believe in happy endings a little more.
There’s also something charming about this little break in the fourth wall. It has a sort of Princess Bride vibe, where you feel like your being told the story, rather than reading it. Even the way the story is written doesn’t feel like a book, but more like listening to someone relate the tale, with all the tangents and spice that come with the act of oral storytelling.
You can definitely see the influences of other stories - the turned out daughter, the fairy godmother, and the girl so beautiful she produces jewels. Every part pulls together like a bedside story being made up as the speaker goes along. It’s a delight and I recommend you try and pull up an online version if you can. Just don’t get it mixed up with The Goose Girl, a totally different (but still good) story about a princess suffering grave injustice.
Also a fun side note, we can see that Shakespeare took inspiration from this story or a similar one, as the princess Cordelia shares a similar fate to our Goose Girl at the Well. I guess King Lear can join Snow White and Huntsman and Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters as yet another dark and gritty reimagined fairytale.

‘ come back tomorrow so that i can change the bandage. ’ { Sawyer for Sam bc next gen things? }
* a long way gone starters
As they buckled up for another late night ghosting adventure, Sam was really starting to regret sharing these stories with Sawyer. It pretty much always led to them exploring some scary ass condemned house to see if there was any truth to it. Usually it was just a bunch of bullshit, but that wasn’t always the case.
“We don’t have to go in there if you don’t want to,” Sam casually suggests as he tries to play it off like he wasn’t already ‘shit-his-pants’ terrified. “I’m not scared, of course, just saying.” This house in particular was rumored to belong to some witch in the 1600′s who lured children there with the intention of eating them. It was some Hansel and Gretel type shit, and the scariest part was the evidence they’d found researching that supported the story. A lot of local kids had gone missing around that time to never be found. It made his skin crawl.
Despite giving them an out, Sawyer insisted they check it out as she slipped inside. “Fuck me,” he mutters under his breath before following her in with his flashlight and taking the lead. The inside was even creepier than the out; it definitely gave off the vibe of being some fairy tale evil witch house.
Sawyer suggested they check out the kitchen first since that was crucial point of interest from the stories. The room was falling apart with cobwebs, ceiling tiles, and broken glass and wood littering everything. “Hey,” Sam nudges Sawyer as he points his beam at a giant cauldron near an old stove. “Fucking hell. Do you think she actually, like, boiled them alive? That’s so fucking demented…”
As Sawyer moved forward to get a closer look though, Sam picked up on the sound before it happened. The boards creaked under her weight, and then a loud crack as the wood started splintering. He had very little time to react as pure instinct kicked in. “Shit! Look out!” He shouts at her, lunging forward and managing to push her out of harm’s way just as the floor gives, taking him down with it.
Hitting the floor of the basement with a thump, his whole body ached from the impact as he covered his face from the debris following. “Shiiiiiiiiiit,” he groans out as Sawyer yells for him from upstairs. The wind had been knocked right out of him, but he didn’t feel like anything had broken. The cuts and bruises were another thing though, and there would be no hiding those from his mother. Damnit, she was going to be really upset which meant Dad was going to be upset. Shit.
“I’m fine,” Sam breathes out as Sawyer finally makes it down to him and starts fussing. He was pretty sure he had a big cut across his forehead, and there was definitely one on his right arm cause he could feel it. “Just a little banged up. This place definitely isn’t up to fucking code, that’s for damn sure.” Managing to pull a small smile from her, Sam manages to get up with her help as they cut their exploration a bit short tonight.
——————–
As Sawyer bandaged him up back at her place, Sam didn’t think they’d be getting up to any late night ghost hunting in the foreseeable future. Especially since her dad had heard them come in and Sawyer insisted on having Quinn check him out just incase there was anything more serious than surface injuries. So, that dominoed into Alice waking up and then a phone call to his parents, who were now on their way to come get him.
Sighing as Sawyer finishes wrapping the bandage around his arm, he comments, “we’re so fucking grounded. My mom is gonna cry and my dad is gonna fucking kill me for making her cry and then Sid’s probably gonna kill me after I’m already fucking dead and then—” He was being dramatic, he could see it in the way her lips twitched and her eyes lit up in amusement. She was completely unharmed, that was what mattered the most.
Managing a smile, even as he heard the front door open signaling his parents were here, he tells her, “I’m glad you’re okay. I’ll fall a hundred fucking times if it means you’ll be fine.” And he would, because she was too important.
Their moment is soon interrupted though as his mom bursts through the door and starts fussing over him now. “Mom, I’m fine, please don’t cry. I’ve had worse, really. I’m sorry!” He tries to calm her, while his dad steps in shortly after. Turning to Sawyer while his dad calms his mom, he says, “guess I gotta go…”
‘ come back tomorrow so that i can change the bandage. ’
“I will,” he answers with a grin before looking to his parents. “Uh, I mean, if they let me leave the house, that is.”

I can get behind a lot of these takes, but I also am always totally here for a lot of the good-tropey stuff, and the fact that Geralt gives a smartass!Aragorn vibe does a lot of the legwork. I haven't cared much for Henry Cavill since Man from Uncle, but I am Totally Down For This.
- I've also got mixed feelings about how folks do and Do Not age. Like, more clearly demonstrating visually that Jaskier is aging/has aged where Geralt hasn't would be good, or even, as OP suggests, indicating that in his lifestyle/personal Style/anything really would be nice, but I think the aging confusion also A: works for me personally, to help set this fantasy world apart from other bog-standard swords-and-horses stuff, and B: of all magical&mutant& Elven folk age slowly/not at all... Well, like 85% of the recurring characters are covered there, so... I mean, I was really confused by calanthe's age on a first pass, and I would have liked to see the decade or so more clearly demonstrated in her consort, but if she is a mutant girl born under the solar eclipse, then it makes perfect sense that she would not physically age particularly.
Basically, it makes all of these episodes feel a lot more... Fable-y? like how mad Max fury road is not a direct sequel to other mad Max films, but rather another tell in the meat sauce that characters in that world tell each other about Max rockatansky. And that style of storytelling works for me. (so far. The likelihood that this is not deliberate, that this is accidental or lazy has not escaped my consideration, so I'm fully prepared to eat my words on that.)
- What OP says about fairytales. Yes. That. Goes along with the time fluidity. Also let's me excuse some of the more profoundly anachronistic stuff. Very Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters. Which I loved.
- Holy shit that crossover could work real real well I maybe needta do it.
- it bothered me as well, the way Tissaia is defanged. Particularly... Well, I was down with the Early eps, with the Idea that the young Mage wanted to keep this poor girl safe (although Tissaia found her pretty damn quickly anyway, so doesn't look like he was very effective at that. Possibly some plot-hole-y stuff there.) She knows the whole system is f***** up and twisted and awful and doesn't want that for this innocent young woman who's clearly had more than her share of s*** already. And this proves true the longer we're involved in that situation, the way we see Yennefer tortured and conditioned and moulded. It makes sense that she would be morally grey-to-evil and conditionally-comfortable with and on the side of her abuser/abductor. Like, that was all managed fairly smoothly.
But then we see little of the transitional stuff between "I am totally willing to trade pain and my fertility, in order to remake myself the way I want to see myself and want to be seen, fuck anyone who gets in my way", and then "I am jaded about my power and appearance, apathetic about the world, complacent in service to my masters/guild/the folks that kidnapped me as a young person, and actually I desperately want a baby of my own, now, and this is gonna be my primary driver for then next few decades at least."
And then after all that business, we encounter Tissaia again, and she's completely defanged. She's not kidnapping folks, they pay for the opportunity. Yennefer is newly motivated to save these kids from the abuse, trauma, and murder she experienced and witnessed... Only it turns out none of that is happening? And the show comes right up to the edge of making fun of her for the assumption... And then I guess we're all (including Yennefer) now sympathetic to Tissaia's lack of... Control? Power? Respect? Young women she is abusing?
Like, to start with the strong parallel that, on the Male Side, you've got a member of the "brotherhood" who feels strongly that some young women should be hunted and killed, and who maybe sorta gets off on, or at least is way too into, dissecting these women afterwards... And on the Female Side, our representative seems to quite enjoy kidnapping similar young women, torturing and grooming them, abusing and controlling them, turning them into obedient tools who love and respect her and are willing to kill eachother. Like, nice fucked up gross parallels.
But then "nilfgaard is attacking" so we must "work together" and love eachother, and rather than maintain those earlier, scarier dynamics, now Tissaia is just a Tough Battle-axe Lady who We Should Care About because Life Is Hard and she Does What's Necessary and she loves her "pupils" really, or something. Feels a bit gas-light-y. Feels a bit like Thanos Chucking Gamorra off a cliff and being Vindicated for it.
Idk. Messy, and maybe some missed opportunities for Yennefer to work through stuff. Like, "I have trouble being mad at/critical of/hating my abuser because Trauma Is Complicated and People Are Complicated and Sometimes Shit Is Like That" could also have been an interesting avenue to explore with Yennefer (and maybe they will in future??? We can hope!). And would probs pair nicely with a similar plotline from Geralt, either with confronting his mum/the fact that she ditched him (I haven't read the books or played the games, is she also a mage person? Like, are they not allowed to have kids and so ditching him into the care of someone who might make him a Witcher was actually his best chance for survival? Rather than having like all of the brotherhood or something and come after them and murder her kid? Is that what was going on?), Or with him confronting his own Tissaia, the dude that killed 7/10ths of the boys he acquired in order to make that last chunk into Witchers. Who Geralt has at least a decent enough relationship with in the final episode to want the farmer dude to deliver him there , expecting this fellow to heal him/save his life/help him. Etc
Would be interesting to see parallels like that, where either the two can commiserate after, on their shared life experience, or where they can argue esp if they both landed on different forgive vs eliminate solutions to their childhood traumas.
- much in the way their stance on personal fertility is in opposition. A little clunky in the TV series I though, cuz we Didn't see much of Yennefer's journey to wanting a kid AND blaming the mage structure or whatever for her loss of fertility, and so the whole time she's on about it being a thing that was "taken" from her, I mean, yeah you can make that argument about coercion and manipulation and dubious consent of vulnerable people, but the show sort of doesn't make that argument, just jumps straight from "her making this trade is her own choice she makes freely in pursuit of power/emancipation/control etc" to "see how ppl in power take this freedom from Witchers/mutants/mages/this class of outsiders"
Which, do they? like, the show seemed to come firmly down on the side of "witchers are sterile, that's part of how you make a Witcher, this was something that was actually taken from Geralt without his consent, like his eyes, and he's just come around to accepting it over his long life and letting go any kind of anger he once felt about it", but although Yennefer sort of implies that her teachers did the same to her when she became a mage, we're given to understand up until then that what happened to her was rather unusual, begging the question of whether her fertility would have been taken from her some other way, if there really are rules about female mages procreating? Or if it's normal to coerce the female initiates into making a bargain that sacrifices their fertility? That could be a really interested in twisted and f***** up thing, that all of these people would end up in a position where they both felt it had been taken from them, because it was because they were pushed into making that choice, but also felt guilty and twisted about it because technically they sort of made that choice of their own free will...
- And sorry, probs because I grew up reading things like Redwall and Xanth, and probs because of my aforementioned fable/myth/fairytale take on the series, I think the law of surprise is hilarious and great. Reminds me of the "parlay"/Pirate Code nonsense from the Early Pirates of the Caribbean movies, and how much of a delight that gag was for so long. XD it's very stupid, I give you. But that's probably why I dig it.
The Witcher S1: A Few Thoughts
Overall, I mostly enjoyed the show while finding myself least interested in its two main characters. Like a lot of fantasy stories, the fun of working out the history of the world can overshadow a fairly pedestrian main story. So even though most of my detailed reactions are critical, I’m definitely engaged and looking forward to the next season. I just wish I found Geralt, Ciri, and their whole deal more compelling.
