Giuseppina Anselmi Faina (1818-1872) pintora italiana.

Storia dell’artista

♫ It's Now Or Never ♫
♫ It’s Now Or Never ♫
I have often said I was not a fan of Elvis Presley … I thought he was a bit too much of a showman and not enough of a serious musician. However, some of his music I did … and do … really like. Tonight’s song is one such … for no apparent reason it popped into my head tonight … Oh wait … I remember why! I was responding to a comment by Roger and used the phrase “It’s now or never” and thus the…

The man who gave his heart to Madrid (literally)
“As for your gentle invitation to becqueath a souvenir of my humble person to the Museum of the Teatro Real, I’ll answer you in al simplicity, even if I’m still alive. My breast still houses that muscular and impulsive dynamo we call heart; there are engraved, with indelible letters, the words Spain, Faith, Gratefulness, Love, which are like the four cardinal points. Well, I have left dispositions in my will for it to be placed near the bust of the divine Gayarre... I hope this will be enough, and I embrace you, and with you I embrace all the people of Madrid...”
Such were the words of the tenor Giuseppe Anselmi in a letter dated June 1925 and adressed to Luis París, then impresario of Madrid’s opera house, the Teatro Real. Born Antonio Giuseppe Anselmi in 1876 in Nicolosi, near Catania, in the East cost of Sicily. Anselmi was one of the most famous tenors of the first half of the 20th Century. After studying violin and piano in the Conservatory of Naples, he joined a troupe of operetta singers. Then legend says he was heard by the music publisher Giulio Ricordi, who advised him to go under vocal training with one of Italy’s most famous conductors, Luigi Mancinelli. Although there are sources that claim he did his debut as early as 1896, his official debut took place in 1900 at the Teatro San Carlo, in Naples.
youtube
The tenor soon made his way to the stages of Milan, London, St. Petersburg, Montecarlo, Brussels, Warsaw or Buenos Aires... He was admired because of his voice; it didn’t hurt that he was considered also a matinée idol, with his stage presence and his good looks. Short story, he became extremely popular. However, there was a special place where Anselmi was the absolute king, a place where the audience wouldn’t tire of him. A place where even Caruso failed to make the same impression. And that place was Madrid.
Our tenor made his debut there in January 1907, as Des Grieux in Massenet’s Manon. During eleven years (his last performance in the Teatro Real took place in 1918) he was the city’s favourite tenor. Apart from being popular as an opera singer, he won everyone’s hearts. The above mentioned Luis París considered him a charming lad, sympathetic and candid, humble and a good friend. Humble or not, Peppino Anselmi liked going to festivals in Madrid’s neighbourhoods, enjoying the company of the city’s inhabitants, more than that of the aristocratic salons.
Anselmi’s career as an opera singer was truncated by First World War, and once it was finished, he barely stepped on a stage again, retiring to Italy, composing and teaching. His love for Madrid remained intact. When in 1924 the museum of the city’s opera house was organized, souvenirs from singers who had performed there started to arrive... And it was then when Anselmi offered his heart, to be placed next to the bust of another legendary tenor, Julián Gayarre. Little he knew that his gift to the city would arrive earlier than expected. Only four years after Anselmi’s offer, he died of pneumonia.
Thus the tenor’s heart started its eventful journey to Madrid, with another tenor (the Spaniard José Riera, one of Anselmi’s pupils) charged with the strange mission of bringing it to Spain. Things where made difficult at the Spanish border. Not impressed with Anselmi’s hommage, the authorities only gave permission to bring his heart to the Antropology Museum, where it remained during a year until Mr. París obtained permission to place it next to Gayarre’s bust. Our impresario left an account of this depressing visit.
Before me I had the only thing left of a good man, of the triumphant singer who was my friend. I remembered the nervous beating of that heart, when, everytime he left the stage, he embraced me, muttering ‘I am so happy, my dear Luis; I am so happy!’ (...)
But this wasn’t the end of the story. War had stopped Anselmi’s career, war almost destroyed his strange legacy. During the Spanish Civil War, the opera house became a munitions depot and, between that and the bombardment of the city, Anselmi’s heart was considered lost. However, it was saved by Fernando José de Larra, the new impresario, after venturing himself through the debris. The damaged opera house was no longer a safe place for what remained of its collections. And thus Anselmi’s heart had to do yet another voyage...
Today, Anselmi’s extravagant offer to the city of his success is housed at the National Museum of Theatre at Almagro, Ciudad Real. Maybe is time to return to Madrid again?

Giuseppe Anselmi (1876-1929) was an immensely gifted tenor whose relatively brief career took him to major theaters on both sides of the Atlantic. Born in Catania, Sicily, Anselmi’s musical talents were discovered quite early and he began studies at the Naples Conservatory at the age of twelve. Interestingly, his initial discipline was not voice but violin and he made his debut as a concert violinist in his hometown in 1889. By the age of sixteen, Anselmi discovered his vocal talents and began touring the Italian provinces with a small operetta company. Celebrated music publisher Giulio Ricordi heard the fledgling tenor and encouraged him to pursue vocal studies with the intention of making a career in opera. Anselmi sought out Luigi Mancinelli, the famed conductor, composer and teacher, and began an intensive two year period of vocal study with him. According to most sources, the young tenor’s operatic debut occurred in 1896 as Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana at the Royal Opera in Athens. However, Anselmi himself remembered his debut as having taken place a year later in Patras, Greece. Regardless, Anselmi spent the next couple of years with a touring repertory company, bouncing around Greece, Turkey and Egypt in such operas as Il Barbiere di Siviglia and La Traviata. By 1900, Anselmi had made his way back to his homeland, where he made his Italian debut in Genoa as Rodolfo in La Bohème. His years in the far flung provinces had served him well, for he had not only built an impressive repertoire but a fine reputation as well. 1901 saw important debuts at the San Carlo in Naples (as Turiddu) as well as London’s Covent Garden (as the Duke in Rigoletto). Anselmi was then pressed into service as Florindo for the Naples premiere (one of several simultaneous premieres throughout Italy) of Mascagni’s Le Maschere. However, the Mascagni opera turned out to be a failure and London critics were not impressed with Anselmi’s “disagreeable bleating tone”. Luckily, the tenor was able to weather the storm of bad publicity and emerged with his reputation unscathed. 1904 saw Anselmi’s debut at La Scala, where he was to become a popular fixture. Later that same year, he returned to Covent Garden to sing the English premiere of Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur, this time to glowing reviews. His international career in full swing, Anselmi was enjoying success on the stages of Vienna, Berlin, Lisbon, Paris, Monte Carlo, Brussels and Buenos Aires. He was particularly admired in St. Petersburg, Moscow and Warsaw, cities to which he returned annually until the Revolution. It was Madrid, however, that was the city of his greatest successes. Anselmi became an almost mythical figure to Madrid audiences and enjoyed star status there throughout his career. Anselmi’s health, which was never particularly robust, was adversely affected by the years of travel from city to city. This may account for the fact that he retired from the stage at the early age of 40. He returned to his estate in Zoagli (near Genoa) where he became a bit of a recluse. A lifelong bachelor (who sometimes had to endure tiresome speculation about his sexuality), Anselmi was intensely secretive about his private life and offered few details to interviewers. In his retirement, he spent time coaching young singers and dabbling in composition. He also gave the occasional concert, appearing in public for the last time at a benefit concert in Rapallo in February of 1926…but as a violinist. By this point, sadly, Anselmi’s physical condition was deteriorating. He had contracted tuberculosis, which greatly sapped his strength. On May 27, 1929, he died from pneumonia at his villa at the age of 52. In the ultimate poetic gesture, he bequeathed his heart to the city of Madrid, where it reposes in a crystal urn at the Museum of the Teatro del Regio. Giuseppe Anselmi was a remarkable artist and one of the few remaining bel canto stylists of his era. His repertoire of over 20 roles was quite diverse, including such operas as Don Giovanni, The Barber of Seville, Don Pasquale, La Favorita, Tosca, La Bohème, Iris, Fedora, La Gioconda, La Traviata, Faust, Werther, Manon, The Pearl Fishers and Yevgeny Onegin. His impressive recorded legacy, made for Fonotipia between 1907 and 1910 (with a handful of titles recorded for Edison in 1913), reveals exemplary musicianship, remarkable technique and impeccable artistry. The voice itself is, for the most part, a pleasing lyric tenor, although Anselmi seems to be plagued by chronic congestion (he can be heard frequently clearing his throat in his recordings) that creeps into his tone from time to time. That being said, Anselmi’s recordings are a marvel to listen to and a magical window through which we can experience a long lost style of singing.
