Over the course of 2022, I've completed an A-to-Z pile of books from my and my husband's collection, all things I'd never read. It was my GISH Personal Challenge from Gishmas 2021. I'd thought about giving it up when GISH ended, but I decided that it was a personal challenge, so I should keep it up for my own sake. I know it's not a spectacularly huge pile of reading for a whole year, but I really wanted to recapture some of my love of reading that had fallen by the wayside with distractions like *gestures broadly at the internet in general.* I'm already deciding which books to put on the list to read next year, but it won't be A-to-Z, as there are only so many Q books to go around.

So I’m doing this thing. I’m doing it with writing, because I’ve just experienced my worst writing year (by wordcount) since 2014. And that’s when I was in the middle of probably the worst depressive episode I’ve ever endured so like... this year was hard.

My goal every year is to try to hit my published record (which is still 2015 at over 250k words... I’ve come close to that again, but never hit it). After this year where I barely squeaked past 100k, at the last minute and at great expense, I’m setting a more reasonable and hopefully achievable goal for next year. I just gotta do better than 2020.

I’d started this year with a kickass pace! I was set to blow 2015 out of the water! And then March happened.... and then next thing we knew it was November and now there’s only like two days left in the year. So 2021... I’m not setting an unreasonable goal here, I am just shooting for consistency and persistence. I’ll be posting weekly updates to this as the year goes on, and I guess since I posted this on a Monday, that’ll be a convenient reminder to me to keep up with the accountability posts. They’ll all be tagged #GISHPersonalChallenge, but they’ll only happen once a week anyway.

Ahhh, life has not been kind for the past couple of weeks but I’m finally back and able to post another smidgin of story for my @gish personal challenge…

The day was cool but bright, with a promise of warmer sunshine to come once the morning fog had cleared. It was Nia's day off, and as they ate breakfast they looked over at the pile of bright blankets that lay on the back of the sofa; just waiting to be parcelled up.

In recent days Nia had been knitting a lot more than usual, unable it seemed to concentrate on the books they had been reading. This had never happened before. Nia was at a loss to understand why the printed pages, that had always been both a refuge and a place of exploration and enjoyment, had seemingly abandoned their faithful friend.

Sighing, Nia finished the coffee that had gone cold in the bottom of their mug and put the breakfast things in the sink. Vowing to do the washing up later, they carefully parcelled up the blankets in brown paper and finished them off with a large luggage label. To each label, in large carefully written block capital letters, Nia had added the name of where each parcel was to go.

One parcel was destined for the charity shop, another for the hospice, and the third was labelled up for delivery to the small church of St Jude and St Leonard. Nia decided to drop off the parcels for the shop and the hospice first, as she was hoping to speak with the vicar - if he was there when she dropped the blankets off at the church.

I hate watercolors. I deeply hate them. But it's gish personal CHALLENGE. So I had to try at least. And I swear I see so many flaws in this painting y'all seriously can't imagine. Never more, I clenched my jaw so bad during the whole time it hurts.

It's been 3 weeks I was thinking about painting that picture. Now I'm over it, I'm fine, I will not think about any damn pogona for the rest of my life.

Or maybe not (yes wtf I'm planning to do it with pencils too, what a mess is my mind)
