Book Review

Shatter Me. By Tehreh Mafi. Harper Collins, 2011. 338 pages. $9.99.

Despite her confinement to an isolated cell in an insane asylum, Juliette Ferrars is not insane, but that's not to say that she doesn't have her fair share of problems. From a young age, Juliette has been struck by a rare affliction—her touch can kill. After being held for three years by the Reestablishment, a government that fears her power, their leader, Warner, offers her an ultimatum: live out the rest of your life in confinement, or live a life of wealth and privilege... as a weapon for the Reestablishment. As Juliette is forced to make a painful choice, a face from her past surfaces sparking emotions that confuse and frighten her. Adam, the one person who could ever see past her deadly curse, is now one of Warner's soldiers.

Assigned to keep a close eye on Juliette, Adam soon makes it clear that he remembers the troubled girl from his youth, and he has every intention of helping her escape. But, stealing away Warner's new prize isn't going to be easy and help will have to come from some unexpected places.

Shatter Me is the debut novel from Tahereh Mafi and it's an exciting opening salvo to what promises to be a thrilling and intensely personal series. Juliette narrates the story, and through her writing, we get a view into the mind of a girl who is deeply troubled by a life devoid of the human contact she desperately wants. No emotion, no passing thought is off limits. Mafi even finds a way to put Juliette's self-consciousness on display through a the use of strikethrough on statements that are too personal or painful to say “aloud.” The language throughout the novel is laced with metaphors which, although beautiful, can sometimes be overdone. Where Mafi shines is in the pacing of the story. Though it gets off to a slow start, Mafi uses the first part of the book to get us into Juliette's head. Through her descriptions of her prison cell and her recent past, Juliette builds the world in which her story will play out. From there, Shatter Me quickly becomes a page turner as the action is ratcheted up and chapters consistently end with cliffhanger moments and surprising revelations.

The characters in Shatter Me are a bit of a mixed bag. Juliette's love interest Adam and his fellow soldier, Kenji are a little one-dimensional. Adam is the constant loving protector to both Juliette and his brother James, but his personality isn't flushed out much past this. Similarly, Kenji is a smart-ass with a heart of gold, but no depth. On the other hand, we get to know Juliette quite well from her narration. She is a girl who has been beaten down for her entire life, and yet there is still a fire inside her, even if she needs some help finding it. Her captor, Warner, is deliciously deviant and the embodiment of power and privilege left unchecked, yet there is still a touch of misguided humanity that he believes he can cling to.

Shatter Me is, first and foremost, a romance between Juliette and Adam, with Warner forming the third side of the love triangle. Nonetheless, Mafi skillfully applies the conventions of science fiction, using Juliette's affliction as a metaphor for her isolation and the lack of compassion she's been shown. Her deadly touch is the physical representation of how closed off she feels from the rest of humanity. Because of this, the most rewarding part of Shatter Me is watching Juliette's journey from a broken, discarded, and frightened child, to a young woman capable of stepping up to a challenge and defending herself and the ones she loves. As the book ends, we see a woman no longer frightened of her abilities. She is done hiding. She will not be used. She is ready to fight.
