Different organizations create reading possibilities that are designed to gift children with the idea that words power the imagination. The imagination then becomes fuel to the impossible, and the impossible then transforms into bucket lists to conquer, aspirations to attain, and accomplished goals to celebrate. For some this could be quite unnerving, and for others their resilience pushes through the doubt and creates a challenge with self. In either case a very deliberate action has to happen to generate these desires. 

With that said, Women Helping To Empower Women Inc, (W.H.E.W.) , created Girls in Action,which service girls between the ages of 8-12 encouraging reading, relationships and responsibility. By having regular meetings monthly, these girls stay connected and have time  to foster different ideas and philosophies about their books with the intent to cross share and come up with different ideologies. This type of exchange gives girls an experience that fosters team building, self awareness and leadership skills so that they don’t only live as characters in their books but that they can become the thinkers and dreamers of our future.

Spearheading this literacy program is Colleen Edwards, Esq., a lawyer that sees the disparity in female literacy amongst urban populations and their suburban counterparts. As a result, the W.H.E.W Inc.’s Girls In Action Book Club was born. This specialized literacy program not only encourages enhancing reading skills, but also instills leadership, social and interpersonal skills. By creating such a program, she purposefully develops a connection to every girl and continues to reach out to them outside of regularly scheduled meetings.
