Matilde Hidalgo is a seriously cool kid. This is probs one of my favourites from #RebelVoices! 🖤💚🌴🌿💚🖤Branded a troublemaker, Matilde sparked her first scandal when she persuaded the director of her high school to offer her a place, a privilege until then enjoyed only by boys. Horrified mothers banned their daughters from befriending her and Matilde braved a daily gauntlet of insults on her way to school. Even her local priest tried to humiliate her into submission by making her listen to services two paces outside the church door. These cruel attacks wounded Matilde, but also drove her on. She became the first female doctor in Ecuador, and aspired to open doors for other women too. Her chance came when she discovered that although no woman had ever voted, it was not actually illegal for them to do so. Dear School Girl,

that's all you ended up being to me, just another girl at school. We were once so close. At one time I would have considered you to be my best friend. But then life happened. We went into junior high and you got new friends. You became popular, and I became a chameleon. Sure, a few people knew my name, but I was never invited to things. People never wanted to hang out with me. I guess I was fine with it for the most part. I finally was saved, and then I had my youth group, so I wasn't completely alone. I just ended up being that weird girl at school who sat in the corner of the room with a book. I was fine with that. What really hurt was when you pretended like you never knew me. Like we were never friends. That was what really hurt.
