ageing is nothing to be ashamed of especially when the entire human race is in it together although sometimes it seems that she alone among her friends wants to celebrate getting older because it’s such a privilege to not die prematurely

reading books I should have read by now - end of the year tbr
I am a collector books. I think we all are. I am a firm believer in the fact that collecting books and reading books are two separate hobbies; they support one another, but they can exist in isolation.
Over the years, I have collected so many books. Wonderful books, books that are raved about and praised beyond words. At the start of 2024, I made a real commitment to reading the books I already own and refrain from buying too many across the year that never end up being read. I have done quite well with this: so far this year, 22 out of the 38 books I have read are books I already own. Bear in mind that within the other 16 are audiobooks included in my audible subscription and library catalogue and physical books borrowed from the library too.
So all in all? Not bad.
For the end of the year though, I have decided to pick five books that are renowned for being excellent. Maybe they’ve won literary prizes (such as the Booker for Girl, Woman, Other and Shuggie Bain; the Pulitzer for The Goldfinch; the Glass Bell Award for Heart’s Invisible Furies; and On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous was also shortlisted for a number of prizes too.) Of course, I’m not just reading these because they’ve been recognised by prizes though; all of these books have been recommended to me by friends or bookish content creators whose opinions I really value.
My plan is to read one a month (ish), starting with Shuggie Bain for August. I am nearly finished and boy oh boy, am I glad I finally got around to picking this one up. Such a wonderful novel. Anyway, more about that in the review.
I can’t wait to dive into the rest of them very soon.

okay this has been bugging me for a few days so im outsourcing to tumblr to see if anyone here has talked about it/is talking about it even though the book is a few years old. is there a consensus on morgan from bernardine evaristo’s girl woman other? ive been reading it for a class and it just screamed borderline transphobic character written by a well meaning cis author who has “concerns”. idk is there some 5d chess im missing? am i reading it too literally? whats the deal with it

Title: Girl, Woman, Other Author: Bernardine Evaristo Publication Year: 2019 Publisher: Black Cat Genre: fiction
Evaristo is brilliant at weaving stories together seamlessly and showing how they all connect with one another. It’s not only between characters but thematically that just played out so well. Girl, Woman, Other is definitely one of those books worth rereading to better see how everything connects. Another wonderful thing about this book is how Evaristo presented intersectionality with such eloquence. This book isn’t just about one specific social category. She beautifully presented the complexities of identity and the impact it has on each character and their interactions with the world.
The writing style took a little getting used to, but once you do, Evaristo simply sweeps you away. I wish I didn’t read this book in short sittings, because the flow of the book is such an integral part. (Alas, my schedule and attention span made it difficult to read this for long periods of time, ugh.)
I’ll likely have to revisit this book, especially now that I know what to expect and can pay attention to more specific details.
