How Naruto Pulled Off Keeping Naruto and Sasuke Away For Almost Three Years
Over the past year and a half, I’ve watched a lot of Naruto for the very first time. From our collective Great Crunchyroll Naruto Rewatch to going through Naruto Shippuden with a few folks on the Features team, it’s been an accelerated crash course through the series. It’s a lot of episodes, but not having to wait week-to-week makes it much easier. This also made a detail clear in the transition to Shippuden that feels like it would have been an excruciating wait for anime-only fans. They had to patiently wait 1,044 days (2 years, 10 months, 9 days) to see Naruto and Sasuke on screen together in a meaningful capacity.
To put that into comparison, manga readers would have only had to see 588 days pass or a little over a year and a half to have this fated encounter take place. The anime is almost twice as long in between. Why? Is the wait worthwhile? Does the reunion mean more the longer you wait for it or does it lose its impact?
Now, it’s important to address that the very first episode of Shippuden is a cold open that showcases what happens nearly a year later when the show finally gets to the reunion. You could count that as the actual reunion, but you don’t really have context of what’s happening, so instead, we’re going to utilize the episode with actual context attached to it. The last time fans had seen both characters on screen together was in Episode 134 of Naruto, “The End of Tears.” That’s where the bombastic fight between Naruto and Sasuke ends and they both go down two separate paths — one leading back to the Hidden Leaf Village and the other studying under Orochimaru.
The biggest reason anime fans had so much time in between their reunion was that shortly after this episode, Naruto would go into its infamous filler block that would round out the series before Shippuden. The mid-00s were still a time where anime adaptations would come out and eventually reach a point where they’d catch up to the manga. Rather than stop, that’s where you’d get lengthy filler arcs to allow for the manga to continue before the series would eventually go back to the canon material. Today, that’s something that’s becoming less and less common due to shows taking breaks and there being less long-running series.
By the time you get to Shippuden and see that cold-open showcasing Naruto and Sasuke facing off again, you’re lulled into a false hope as you think that’s going to kickstart this new series. Instead, the show again makes you wait nearly a whole year before you actually get to that moment in Episode 51, “Reunion.” Looking at it in hindsight, that’s a pretty risky move to make fans wait so much longer after they’d gone through a year and a half of filler. Of course, you can’t just skip two big arcs from the manga as that would cause a huge problem for the anime, but it’s hard to imagine folks wouldn't have preferred the show skip all that so they could see what happens when Naruto and Sasuke face off on their television screens once again.
From May 11, 2005 to March 20, 2008 is such a long time, what could you have accomplished while Naruto and Sasuke were kept apart on screen? You could have bought a PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Nintendo Wii and have already amassed a sizable collection of games. Heck, in that amount of time you may have almost finished up with high school or college! You would’ve been able to watch Fate/stay Night, Ouran High School Host Club, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Welcome to the N.H.K., Gurren Lagann, and many others from start to finish. You’d also see the start of shows that would run longer or have multiple seasons such as Gintama, Clanaad, and D.Gray-man. It’s wild to think that there were so many shows that are so well regarded and remembered today that aired in that short time span.
If we fast forward through those 1,044 days as you can if you binge the series now, would that long length of time have been worth the wait to see Naruto and Sasuke together again? I’m sure fans that were watching at the time might have different opinions, but when I finally got to that moment, it still felt very big and important. However, the long stretch of filler in Naruto has the potential to burn anyone out, and I’d imagine if they continued straight into Shippuden seeing the cold-open and then knowing that there’s a year until that moment happens, it might make them a tad upset. That’s a lot to go through, just to have the rug pulled out from under you.
On the other hand, having to wait that long allows the show to give you a true slow build all the way to their reunion. It’s certainly not a great slow build since a lot of it is inconsequential filler, but slow builds are something that’s incredibly hard to do. In today’s day and age of being able to have anything available to us at any moment in time, it seems harder and harder to utilize this kind of storytelling because fans can sometimes be impatient. Back in the mid-00s, it was a different time and place. Would a show now be able to make fans wait nearly three years for a big and important moment without some form of revolt happening?
Despite the long wait and having to navigate a whole lot of filler, I think this is truly a good moment that the show is able to capture very well. From Naruto and Sakura’s genuine shock of seeing Sasuke for the first time in three years to the way the camera work slowly reveals that it’s Sasuke, you’re able to feel that tense, uncomfortable, and surprising feeling that Naruto and Sakura have. Immediately you want to know what’s going to happen next, how much more powerful Sasuke has gotten, and if Naruto can keep up after being in rough shape from his Nine-Tails transformation. If you’d been following since the beginning and waited all of those 1,044 days, you could at last say, “Finally.”
Of course, they’re only together for a few episodes before the show splits them apart again to where I’m currently at with watching Shippuden. It's been about a year’s worth of episodes, and they haven’t been on screen together. Naruto sure does love making people wait for inevitable clashes, that’s for sure. While this one was much longer than it ever needed to be (you really don’t need to watch the long filler run in Naruto, trust me), and it took a while to see the two of them together again, it leads to an incredible moment that immediately gets you amped up for the next chapter between these two friends and rivals.
Were you someone who had to go through the long and arduous wait to see these two characters together on screen again? If so, how did you feel when they reunited? Or, if you're someone who watched the series later, what was your reaction when this happened? Let us know down in the comments below!

IT’S TIME, GO MY GIRL!!! That panel of Kagura charging her punch is beyond beast, I love the angle, the pose and the way Sorachi draws the air currents spiraling around her. I also love that Sorachi showed a panel from the umbrella chapter, it’s one of my favourite heart warming Kagura and Yorozuya moments, the fact that Sorachi can reference scenes from one shot stories during longer arcs is great.

Gintama manga chaps 587 - 589
Dear Gintama gods and Sorachi-sama,
First of all, my heartfelt apologies in not writing to you in almost a month! Real life obligations took a good chunk out of my fun time and time just FLEW, and before I knew it, I was behind by three chapters already. Rest assured this will be a rare occurrence, and thankfully, I can now return to my normal festivities of enjoying Gintama and writing my letters to you…letters that you will probably never read or even want to read but I still write because my love for your work is unconditional and needs no reciprocation.
I actually think it’s fitting that I get to talk to you about these three chapters at once since they technically serve as a multipart conclusion to the Yato family feud.
First off, Abuto. You will be most likely be completely disheartened to know that that whole sequence with Abuto waxing poetic about his captain just made my silly fangirl heart leap with glee and believe that Abuto is, without a doubt in my delusional mind, completely in love with his crazy captain, and he has pretty much felt that way since way back when they first met. True, Kamui was on the young side then, so perhaps it wasn’t romantic love at first, but definitely there was something about him that captured Abuto’s heart and devotion right from the moment he first laid eyes on Kamui. All his talk about the Seventh Division’s devotion to Kamui, how they’re captivated by his back, his drive to push forward, the way he smiles through any obstacle…really, Abuto was just talking about himself, wasn’t he? After all, he is the only Seventh Division member who is constantly by his captain’s side, who is always following him on his reckless missions to achieve greatness and strength. He is also the sole Seventh Division member who is risking his life and limbs right now being beaten to a bloody pulp by the mindless monster his beloved captain has become. All of this just so that he could get Kamui to regain his senses again, so that he can return to being the person whom he had been faithfully and blindly following all this years. Sorry, all that, is just…unbelievably sweet and adorable. To be honest, AbuKamui was my OTP for Kamui when they were first introduced, but then I quickly got distracted by GinKam, OkiKam and TakaKam—yeah, I pretty much paired Kamui up with everyone…look at him, how can I resist that cute-as-an-insane-clown mug?? Eventually though, because of their similar natures and because they would just have so much fun together, OkiKam became my main alternate OTP for Okita and Kamui (I say “alternate” of course since I recognize OkiKagu as the bona fide canon OTP at this point). That is probably more history than you cared to know about who I pair up Kamui with, but my point is that Abuto/Kamui were my original love, so it does give me a great deal of satisfaction to see you address that possibility in your usual sly “unintentional” way.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t all just happiness and fuzzy feelings for me during the chapter since watching Gin-chan being pretty much pulverized by Kamui was rather tough to deal with. I know he’s fought against powerful Yato foes like Housen before, who is equally as capable at crushing bones and smashing guts as Kamui is, but the difference between the two battles is that I feel Gintoki is more vulnerable this time because he is essentially protecting both Kagura AND Kamui at the same time. Even while he is trying to knock Kamui down, he is also trying to save the guy from permanently damaging himself. This creates contradictory motives since I would imagine it also prevents him from going full force: he doesn’t want to irreparably injure Kagura’s idiot big brother. Add to that his need to also protect Kagura from said idiot brother, Gin-chan is basically sustaining a beating meant for two people: himself and Kagura. Whereas during his fight with Housen, he had no such qualms about going all out. Not only did he not have to place limiters on his own strength but he also did not have any other concerns to keep in mind. He’s really caught between a rock and a hard place so I’m amazed that he is even still standing at all. Then, as if that wasn’t stressful enough, you had to throw Shinpachi into the mix as well.
As cool as his entrance into the fight was, my stomach did drop a little at the thought of him going up against Kamui. Shinpachi, who has neither the benefit of Yato blood like Kagura nor the super quick healing abilities of Gintoki. While he has definitely grown in strength ever since first meeting Gintoki, this is still Kamui we’re talking about, so how could Pachi-kun possibly be a match. For me, one of the more disturbing images in Gintama has been that of Shinpachi puking up bile while he was being skewered midair by Abuto. Therefore, as soon as he jumped into the fray here I was worried you would find a way to top that. While seeing him spitting up blood is not much better, I am truly grateful that you kept the Pachi-brutality at a minimum this time. I’m sure he still sustained a few broken ribs and maybe some bruised organs from that vicious kick from Kamui, but I understand it could have been MUCH worse.
I was relieved when the fight finally swung back to focus on Kagura and Kamui since that was the face-off I was really looking forward to seeing since the start. I didn’t expect to get all emotional during the last stretch, but you had to go give us that touching flashback to Kouka. Her words about to her daughter and Kagura’s subsequent inner monologue about her two beloved families really got to me. It was so touching. I love that she is trying to save the remnants of her biological family while being supported by her adopted family who are willing to risk their lives to the max for her. My heart aches with the thought that Kouka would never know just how loved Kagura is now and see just how awesome a woman she has become.
By their fight’s end, I was a bit of a teary-eyed mess. That last image of Kamui finally fallen, defeated, resting his head on Kagura’s knees really tugged at my heartstrings. I think Abuto’s words summed it up perfectly: that Kamui was not beaten by his sister’s fists but rather by her tears. Ultimately, all this time, he felt all this anger at his remaining family members just because he ultimately still missed his mother and was guilty about not being able to fix her condition. In acknowledging his buried affection for his little sister, I hope he can finally find peace through her and find comfort in the spirit of their mother that Kagura embodies. I’m sure it will take a little more work for him to get over his anger at Umibouzu since those feelings are too much entangled in his own self-hatred and therefore might take more time to unravel, but not wanting to murder his Papi on sight is probably a good first step.
Admittedly, I’m not sure if I should feel a little disappointed that we didn’t get to see Kagura go into berserker mode like Kamui did. I mean, the fight was bloody enough, and I’m sure that as it is, it’ll take them more than a little while to recover from all the wounds they’ve inflicted on each other, but I do wonder how much more brutal and awesome it would have been if both brother and sister had given into their Yato blood and went completely psychotic on each other. Although, I don’t know who could have pulled them back from the darkside if that had happened: if having Kamui go full Yato already took that much collective effort on everyone’s part to bring him back to his senses, how could Gin-chan and the gang handle things if they had Kagura to deal with as well. They would have definitely needed the help of the other three Joui boys and maybe more to deal with that kind of destructive power. I don’t even want to imagine the carnage that would result from two Yato monsters losing their senses like that. Maybe that’s why you decided against it. It would just be too much. However, I do hope we will at least get to see Kagura go berkserker once more before the series’ end, preferably in front of Okita so that perhaps he could be involved in pulling her back to reason. Right now I’m not sure what scenario would ever call for such circumstances anymore…now that Kagura has her old family back together and her Yorozuya family safe from her idiotic brother, why would she need to lose her mind again? Still, the silly fangirl in me hopes that you will somehow find a way; I have faith that you will always be able to find a way if you really wanted to.
Again, apologies for my failure in writing to you these past weeks; I will work hard to make sure such a long lapse never occurs again in the future.
Yours truly,
A silly fangirl with yaoi dreams
(^3^)
