Many months after finishing Muramasa, I've found the ending of Hero route is the most evocative - like, it's not the one where Kageaki becomes a warlord, but literally none of the major plotlines are resolved by it. Japan is reduced to a post apocalyptic hellscape, Ginseigo's clones are still around, Ichijo is stopped from becoming Kamen Rider but is instead in basically the spot Kageaki was at the beginning of the story etc. It's very tragic, but there's a clear "and the adventure continues" vibe to it that Nemesis doesn't have since it is a much more personal and ambiguous story and which Conqueror swaps for a sort of crushing finality

oh yeah Hero Route is gonna rattle around in my head forever. Conqueror relies a lot on everything that came before it and is more impactful as "the entirety of Muramasa" but Hero Route is just... the most aching and intense narrative taken on its own, by far

I've got a personal theory about Conqueror which I've written on a little bit and will put below a break because it's so much more of a spoiler than someone would normally get from glancing this

honestly there's a decent amount of circumstantial evidence you can read that implies Ichijou might actually be the leader of the warlords from the flash-forward before the "bridge" epilogue. the system the warlords use is the same one she creates after inheriting Muramasa, and we know that in a straightforward battle, Muramasa loses to Masamune

when Muramasa and Kageaki travel forward in time, they see a broken moon and an adult Ichijou wearing Kageaki's tattered coat. when she sees them, Kageaki remarks that she turned away without even reacting to him materialising out of thin air (just like how she saw him in her post-Hero hallucinations) walking away in a straight line without any hesitance

it's more headcanon than anything, but it feels very in-spirit of Narahara's downer writing. Kageaki finally snaps and is put down like a rabid dog, his position inherited by Ichijou all the same

Still losing my mind over the reveal that Ginseigo is Hikaru's dream, and that to become Genseigo means to disregard her limitations as a human and cut her life short. It's one of the few things in FMDM you can view as hopeful, depending on how you look at it. Dreams are fleeting and ephemeral, they can be futile, they can seem nonsensical to everyone except the dreamer, but they still have the power to change the world and the lives of others forever. For better or for worse.

maybe i shouldn’t be speaking since i’m not done with FMDM yet, only just starting third route, but in the game with all the bug motifs and bug/arachnid based mechs (Silver Ant Ginseigo, Crimson Spider Muramasa, some sort of beetle Masamune, the centipede Shinkai), there’s SOMETHING about Sorimachi, who doesn’t have a proper tsurugi of his own just the standard military one, having butterflies on his shirt, it probably doesn’t mean anything specific but everything in the game is put there for a reason especially on a guy like Sorimachi even if the reason is just to place him on the same sort of motif landscape as the main cast

The Silver Star Rises is such a nice song I always let it loop a few times on the Ginseigo scenes. Incidentally, I don't remember if that's actually the first spot it plays at, but the parts in Enoshima are what really sold me on the VN
