Voting and YA Lit
The November election is getting closer and closer. If you're eligible to vote and need more information, Vote.org is an excellent place to start. The League of Women Voters also has a First Time Voter Checklist that may be helpful. This year there may be additional challenges to voting, but if you are able, please let your voice be heard through your vote.
In the final two months before the election, you may enjoy some related reading. First, a few YA novels featuring elections or voting:
Yes No Maybe So by Becky Albertalli and Aisha Saeed Balzer + Bray [Group Discussion]
YES Jamie Goldberg is cool with volunteering for his local state senate candidate—as long as he’s behind the scenes. When it comes to speaking to strangers (or, let’s face it, speaking at all to almost anyone), Jamie’s a choke artist. There’s no way he’d ever knock on doors to ask people for their votes…until he meets Maya.
NO Maya Rehman’s having the worst Ramadan ever. Her best friend is too busy to hang out, her summer trip is canceled, and now her parents are separating. Why her mother thinks the solution to her problems is political canvassing—with some awkward dude she hardly knows—is beyond her.
MAYBE SO Going door to door isn’t exactly glamorous, but maybe it’s not the worst thing in the world. After all, the polls are getting closer—and so are Maya and Jamie. Mastering local activism is one thing. Navigating the cross-cultural romance of the century is another thing entirely.
The Voting Booth by Brandy Colbert Disney-Hyperion [Crystal's Review]
Marva Sheridan was born ready for this day. She’s always been driven to make a difference in the world, and what better way than to vote in her first election?
Duke Crenshaw is so done with this election. He just wants to get voting over with so he can prepare for his band’s first paying gig tonight.
Only problem? Duke can’t vote.
When Marva sees Duke turned away from their polling place, she takes it upon herself to make sure his vote is counted. She hasn’t spent months doorbelling and registering voters just to see someone denied their right. And that’s how their whirlwind day begins, rushing from precinct to precinct, cutting school, waiting in endless lines, turned away time and again, trying to do one simple thing: vote. They may have started out as strangers, but as Duke and Marva team up to beat a rigged system (and find Marva’s missing cat), it’s clear that there’s more to their connection than a shared mission for democracy.
Romantic and triumphant, The Voting Booth is proof that you can’t sit around waiting for the world to change, but some things are just meant to be.
Running by Natalia Sylvester Clarion Books
When fifteen-year-old Cuban American Mariana Ruiz’s father runs for president, Mari starts to see him with new eyes. A novel about waking up and standing up, and what happens when you stop seeing your dad as your hero—while the whole country is watching.
In this thoughtful, authentic, humorous, and gorgeously written novel about privacy, waking up, and speaking up, Senator Anthony Ruiz is running for president. Throughout his successful political career he has always had his daughter’s vote, but a presidential campaign brings a whole new level of scrutiny to sheltered fifteen-year-old Mariana and the rest of her Cuban American family, from a 60 Minutes–style tour of their house to tabloids doctoring photos and inventing scandals. As tensions rise within the Ruiz family, Mari begins to learn about the details of her father’s political positions, and she realizes that her father is not the man she thought he was.
But how do you find your voice when everyone’s watching? When it means disagreeing with your father—publicly? What do you do when your dad stops being your hero? Will Mari get a chance to confront her father? If she does, will she have the courage to seize it?
There are also a few YA nonfiction books that deal with activism and voting rights:
How I Resist edited by Maureen Johnson Wednesday Books
Now, more than ever, young people are motivated to make a difference in a world they're bound to inherit. They're ready to stand up and be heard - but with much to shout about, where they do they begin? What can I do? How can I help?
How I Resist is the response, and a way to start the conversation. To show readers that they are not helpless, and that anyone can be the change. A collection of essays, songs, illustrations, and interviews about activism and hope, How I Resist features an all-star group of contributors, including John Paul Brammer, Libba Bray, Lauren Duca, Modern Family's Jesse Tyler Ferguson and his husband Justin Mikita, Alex Gino, Hebh Jamal, Malinda Lo, Dylan Marron, Hamilton star Javier Muñoz, Rosie O'Donnell, Junauda Petrus, Jodi Picoult, Jason Reynolds, Karuna Riazi, Maya Rupert, Dana Schwartz, Dan Sinker, Ali Stroker, Jonny Sun (aka @jonnysun), Sabaa Tahir, Shaina Taub, Daniel Watts, Jennifer Weiner, Jacqueline Woodson, and more, all edited and compiled by New York Times bestselling author Maureen Johnson.
In How I Resist, readers will find hope and support through voices that are at turns personal, funny, irreverent, and instructive. Not just for a young adult audience, this incredibly impactful collection will appeal to readers of all ages who are feeling adrift and looking for guidance.
How I Resist is the kind of book people will be discussing for years to come and a staple on bookshelves for generations.
The March Trilogy by John Lewis, Andrew Aydin and Nate Powell Top Shelf Productions
A graphic novel memoir in three parts. It tells of the Civil Rights movement through the eyes of John Lewis. Readers see Lewis and other activists launching campaigns such as the Freedom Vote and Mississippi Freedom Summer. The books lead all the way through to the Selma March.
And finally, picture books aren't just for children. Here are two picture books young adults would likely appreciate:
The Voice of Freedom: Fannie Lou Hamer by Carole Boston Weatherford, illustrated by Ekua Holmes Candlewick Press
A stirring collection of poems and spirituals, accompanied by stunning collage illustrations, recollects the life of Fannie Lou Hamer, a champion of equal voting rights.
"I am sick and tired of being sick and tired."
Despite fierce prejudice and abuse, even being beaten to within an inch of her life, Fannie Lou Hamer was a champion of civil rights from the 1950s until her death in 1977. Integral to the Freedom Summer of 1964, Ms. Hamer gave a speech at the Democratic National Convention that, despite President Johnson’s interference, aired on national TV news and spurred the nation to support the Freedom Democrats. Featuring luminous mixed-media art both vibrant and full of intricate detail, Singing for Freedom celebrates Fannie Lou Hamer’s life and legacy with an inspiring message of hope, determination, and strength.
Granddaddy's Turn: A Journey to the Ballot Box by Michael S. Bandy & Eric Stein, illustrated by James Ransome Candlewick Press
Based on the true story of one family’s struggle for voting rights in the Civil Rights–era South, this moving tale shines an emotional spotlight on a dark facet of U.S. history.
Life on the farm with Granddaddy is full of hard work, but despite all the chores, Granddaddy always makes time for play, especially fishing trips. Even when there isn’t a bite to catch, he reminds young Michael that it takes patience to get what’s coming to you. One morning, when Granddaddy heads into town in his fancy suit, Michael knows that something very special must be happening—and sure enough, everyone is lined up at the town hall! For the very first time, Granddaddy is allowed to vote, and he couldn’t be more proud. But can Michael be patient when it seems that justice just can’t come soon enough? This powerful and touching true-life story shares one boy’s perspective of growing up in the segregated South, while beautiful illustrations depict the rural setting in tender detail.

I couldn’t sleep last night and because I’m insane I decided to write down every named character in Shoukoku no Altair that I could think of. After some revision I’ve come to a total of 220 individuals (although two particular names both belong to one person). You can find the complete alphabetical list below. How many do you recognise? If you can think of any I’ve missed, I’ll be impressed!
Also I didn’t include Burak Pasha because we only know his title, not his name.

Need a Little Help Here Booklr
Hey everyone!
I’m currently working on a project for my Collection Development course and for that I have to build a hypothetical library collection. Naturally, I leapt at the chance of making a teen/YA Queer Lit collection. I’ve made a rough list of half the titles I plan to put on the full list, which should be about 50 titles.
Some of these titles I’ve read, some I haven’t, so if I have messed up in describing them let me know! Also, I’m trying to go for most inclusive collection I can make, so if you have any recommendations for other titles let me know! I’m currently on the lookout for more Queer YA Nonfiction Titles, Disabled Queer YA Lit, Pansexual Lit, and any books that would be helpful for allies to learn how to support Queer People.
Let me know what y’all think of the current selection!
1. Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz (Gay) (POC) (Own Voices)
2. Simon Vs. The Homosapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli (Gay)
3. We Are Okay by Nina LaCour (Lesbian)

LGBTQ+ Book List
I work in a library, and I’m pretty good at finding LGBT+ books. My boyfriend @another-broken-heart-cafe , who works with me, has also found quite a few. I finally decided to make an organized list of those and any others I could think of for anyone who’s looking for these kinds of books. I’ve sorted them the best I can and separated them to make what you want as easy to find as possible. There is an adult category, a teen/YA category, and a child category. I’ve read a few of these, but not many, so there’s probably going to be mistakes. I looked up every individual book to organize them the best I could (which took a while because this list currently has 140 books, if I counted correctly). If you find a mistake, just let me know and I’ll fix it in the next update. I plan to make updates occasionally as I find more. Feel free to add on any LGBT+ books you want!

Pitchwars Wishlist 2017
Tumblr media
How am I as a mentor? Hmm..
 I like to say that I’m quite editorial and I enjoy giving feedback to writers in any way they see comfortable. I tend to keep note of things as I read and write things down in the margins or on sticky notes or electronically depending on how/what I’m reading and then provide a edit letter to the writer, followed by either an e-mail exchange, phone call, or Skype call. Of course, everything is subjective and am open to hearing the writer’s feedback and criticism of my criticism as well.
 I typically prefer that other eyes have been on the manuscript or that you have gone through your own rounds of edits before I look at it, but this isn’t a requirement. It just makes me a little happier and also helps me focus on a lot of big picture things and not so much the little things that can be fixed with a simple read-through.
  What am I looking for?
  (BY THE WAY:  I am only looking for YA, no MG, NA, or Adult).
 IF YOU HAVE THE NEXT PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER, SEND TO ME ASAP!!!! Instantly top of the pile for me. I’ve been looking for this forever.
 Diverse road trip novels are high on my list as well.
 Contemporary issues, like police violence, Islamophobia, xenophobia, sexism, feminism, religion, etc.!
 If you have any stories with a religious premise, themes, or motifs, send to me! (I.e – The Temptation of Adam by Dave Connis!)
 Any and all LGBTQ+ stories are welcome, especially LGBTQ+ stories features POC as the heroes, and especially #OwnVoices!
 I want a manuscript that brings me to tears—whether by laughing too hard or for any other reason, like my heart breaking.
Teens with jobs – I haven’t come across many of these, but would love to!
 Funny – bring me all your funny!
 Stories about friendships and how messy they can sometimes be.
Send me your geeky, nerdy stories!
I have a huge crush on stories that feature music as a heavy part of it! (All music!)
I am not looking for: Paranormal, anything with vampires.
 If your writing/manuscript matches the style(s) of any of these authors, please send to me!
 Adi Alsaid
Angie Thomas
Brandy Colbert
Nicola Yoon
Adam Silvera
Becky Albertalli
Jason Reynolds
Alex Gino
Nic Stone
Elizabeth Acevedo

Angels & Demons (2009)
Action, Mystery, Thriller |
Angels & Demons is a American mystery thriller film directed by Ron Howard and written by Akiva Goldsman and David Koepp, based on Dan Brown’s 2000 novel of the same title. It is the sequel to the 2006 film The Da Vinci Code, also directed by Howard, and the second installment in the Robert Langdon film series. However, the novel version was published first and acts as a prequel to The Da Vinci Code novel.
Filming took place in Rome, Italy, and the Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, California. Tom Hanks reprises his role as Professor Robert Langdon, while Ayelet Zurer stars as Dr. Vittoria Vetra, a CERN scientist joining Langdon in the quest to recover a missing vial of antimatter from a mysterious Illuminati terrorist. Producer Brian Grazer, composer Hans Zimmer and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman also return, with David Koepp coming on board to help the latter.
At CERN, Father Silvano and Dr. Vittoria Vetra create three canisters of antimatter. Silvano is murdered, and one of the canisters is stolen. The Catholic Church mourn the sudden death of Pope Pius XVI, and prepare for the papal conclave to elect his successor in Vatican City. Father Patrick McKenna, the Camerlengo, takes control of the Vatican. Four of the “preferiti”, the favoured candidates to be Pope, are kidnapped by a man claiming to represent the Illuminati. He sends the Vatican a warning, claiming he will murder each of the cardinals from 8 pm to midnight, when the stolen antimatter will explode and destroy the city, hidden somewhere within.
Director: Ron Howard
Writers: David Koepp (screenplay), Akiva Goldsman (screenplay), Dan Brown (novel)
Stars: Tom Hanks, Ewan McGregor, Ayelet Zurer, Stellan Skarsgård, Pierfrancesco Favino, Nikolaj Lie Kaas, Armin Mueller-Stahl

Wow, we are officially half way through 2020 (thank god)! My reading this year hasn’t been too bad because I am officially half way through my Goodreads goal! I’ve read a total of 21 books this year, and I’m hoping to keep this energy up through the rest of the summer and the fall. Today, I’m going to be doing the Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag to talk about some of my book-related opinions of the year!
Best Book You’ve Read So Far in 2020?
#gallery-0-28 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-28 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-28 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-28 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Is anyone truly surprised by this answer? It took me so long to read Six of Crows, and I am SO GLAD I finally did! Six of Crows was the first fantasy I’ve read in a long while, and I totally fell in love with Leigh Bardugo’s world building abilities and characters. I can’t stop gushing about this one. The second one is everyone’s old favorite: The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. I actually had not read this book until this year, and it’s really surprising that it took me THIS LONG to read it.
Best Sequel You’ve Read So Far in 2020?
I actually haven’t read any sequels yet this year! I will be reading Crooked Kingdom in the next few weeks, and I have a feeling that that will be the best sequel of the reading year.
New Release You Haven’t Read Yet, But Want To?
#gallery-0-29 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-29 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-29 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-29 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
There are SO many new releases I’m excited to read, but I would say that All Boys Aren’t Blue by George M. Johnson and You Should See Me In A Crown by Leah Johnson are the two I am THE most pumped for! I already own You Should See Me In A Crown, so I really have no excuse not to pick it up soon! Sadly, I’m waiting on my audiobook copy of All Boys Aren’t Blue to come in from the library so I hope it comes in soon!
Most Anticipated Release For Second Half of 2020?
#gallery-0-30 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-30 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-30 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-30 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
I decided to break the mold a little for this one and do FOUR books I am pumped for. After reading Daris The Great Is Not Okay earlier this year (which I’ll talk about in a bit), I can’t wait for the next book Darius The Great Deserves Better by Adib Khorram! I also can’t wait for Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas because everyone and their mothers have not stopped RAVING about this book! Also, I talked about why I’m hyped about Never Look Back and Every Body Looking in a recent post if you want to check it out!
Biggest Disappointment?
#gallery-0-31 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-31 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-31 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-31 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
I picked up an ARC of The Fountains of Silence by Ruta Sepetys last year at ALA, and I was so excited for this one because I’ve only loved all of Ruta’s previous books. However, this one fell a little flat for me. It was a slow read until about half way through, and then it picked up a bit. I still rated it three stars because I loved the history behind it, but the characters and plot felt too jumbled for me.
The Names They Gave Us by Emery Lord was personally my BIGGEST disappointment. I have had this book on my shelf since 2017, and I finally picked it up this year after drawing it from my TBR jar. It was really cringey for me, especially after only reading diverse contemporaries with strong characters. I DNFed about 70 pages into it.
Biggest Surprise?
#gallery-0-32 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-32 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-32 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-32 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
I wouldn’t say these two were exactly surprises, but I would say I went into both of these with ‘meh’ expectations only for them to BLOW ME AWAY! Darius The Great Is Not Okay is a quiet contemporary that made me absolutely fall in love with the characters. Adib Khorram definitely became an auto-buy author for me after this.
I read Dear Martin by Nic Stone forever ago, so I wasn’t totally sure what to expect with Jackpot. However, I thoroughly enjoyed Jackpot! It was a lot more fun than I expected it to be, but it was also one of the first books I read with a main character who wasn’t affluent/middle class. It fully reminded me how much I loved Nic Stone and how I need to pick up her other books in the future!
Favorite New Author?
#gallery-0-33 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-33 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-33 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-33 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Well, y’all could probably guess by what I’ve said so far that Leigh Bardugo would be one of the answers for this one! My other answer for this one would have to be Brandy Colbert, author of Little & Lion! I recently finished this one as an audiobook, and I genuinely enjoyed Brandy’s writing style and characterization. I’m super excited to dive in more to her other books (especially The Voting Booth)!
Newest Fictional Crush
This should go without saying, but I’d say my newest fictional crush is Kaz Brekker. There are SO MANY reasons why I’ve fallen in love with him, but I’m sure if you’ve been anywhere in the online book community you already know all about him.
Newest Favorite Character
Much like the one above, this is also Six of Crows related. The ENTIRE Six of Crows crew is what I’m going to count as my new favorite character. Again, you probably know why, but I talk about them more in my Six of Crows post.
Book That Made You Cry?
I haven’t actually cried in a book yet this year! However, A Little Life by Hanya Yanagiharais on my TBR in the future so we’ll see what happens!
Book That Made You Happy?
#gallery-0-34 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-34 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-34 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-34 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
I read Yes No Maybe So in late February right before the pandemic hit and I had to leave college, so reflecting on my reading so far I just remember how genuinely happy it made me. I love Becky Albertalli so much, so I was also super happy to finally be reading a new book of hers. I also listened to the audio book of George by Alex Gino recently, and it made me SO HAPPY. It’s a middle grade novel about a trans main character, and it dealt with super important while still being super light-hearted. I fell in love!
Most Beautiful Book You Bought So Far This Year?
#gallery-0-35 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-35 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-35 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-35 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Would it truly be a Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag without talking about Elizabeth Acevedo? I purchased With The Fire On High and Clap When You Land this year, and these are arguably the most beautiful books (both on the inside and the outside). If you have not read Elizabeth Acevedo, you are missing out.
What Books Do You Need To Read By The End of The Year?
#gallery-0-36 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-36 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-36 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-36 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
SO MANY BOOKS! Here are a few of the ones I’m hoping to read by the end of 2020:
Who Do I Tag?
Zoe @ SunnyChapterone
Shelby @ ShelbyCReads
Claire @ Clairefy
Kayla @ BooksAndFirstLooks
Marie @ snarkandsquee
Jackie @ BookishCoffeeBlog
Lelia @ A Page Out of My Book
Victoria @ V.E. Reads
Rc @ Nekuthebooklock
And YOU! If you have not done it yet, I officially tag you!
Welp, those are all the questions! I’ve had a pretty good reading year so far, and I can’t wait to see what new favorites emerge in the next few months! Do we have any books in common? What was your favorite book I’ve listed? If you’ve already done the tag, drop the link! I’d love to read/watch.
        Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag Wow, we are officially half way through 2020 (thank god)! My reading this year hasn't been too bad because I am officially half way through my Goodreads goal!
