The last part of the trial and the credits were long, but I have fully experienced the finale The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles!
I finally know the truth behind The Professor case that took place ten years before the present day in-game.
Parts of it, I guessed correctly - that Genshin Asogi actually did take someone's life and Mael Stronghart was the true mastermind, but other parts really surprised me - Seishiro Jigoku was involved in the plot that ultimately killed Genshin, and Klint van Zieks was the mass murderer all along.
I also couldn't have predicted the extent of Stronghart's involvement - there was hardly a single person that he didn't blackmail or extort the whole time! Ryunosuke, Susato, Yujin, Sholmes and Iris were all very lucky in that respect.
But Genshin's incredible foresight to hide Klint's will (both a confession and his last words to his surviving family) - was truly what allowed the truth to come to light in the end.
And it was an emotionally devastating truth, both to Kazuma Asogi and Barok van Zieks.
Kazuma, who believed his father was completely blameless and convicted on forged evidence learned that Genshin actually did take Klint's life.
Barok, who idolized his brother and held him up as a paragon of justice found out that Klint took many lives (some under duress from Stronghart, who Barok trusted until now) - and he could only be stopped in a duel to the death with Genshin.
And all of this would have stayed hidden if Ryunosuke hadn't been in Great Britain, growing from an inexperienced nervous student of law to a true attorney who helps his client uncover the truth.
The truth is a guiding light, and that's demonstrated. It doesn't always lead to happiness, but it can lead to closure. And that's exactly what he brought to both Kazuma and Barok, who held onto resentment and darkness for ten long years. And those who stray from that guiding light remain in the darkness, like Stronghart, treating people as mere things to achieve their own version of "peace" and "justice" at so many others' expense.
And while the Herlock Sholmes Deus Ex Machina (the hologram broadcast to the Queen of England!) did happen out of nowhere to stop Stronghart from pulling a whole Karma Houdini, that doesn't take away from the fact that it was Ryunosuke who found the evidence.
Ryunosuke is the one who pieced together the truth that was covered up (or in Genshin Asogi's case, protected until the right time came long.) It was his effort that won the day, and all the characters acknowledge him for this. He grows and the narrative awards him for it! He knows what he's going to do with the rest of his life now - return back home to Japan as a defense lawyer.
And it's because of him that other characters have a future to think about.
Gina wants to keep the Inspector's spirit she saw in her old boss Gregson alive (but without the spying of course) after getting a final letter from him.
Van Zieks wants to publish the truth about The Professor Case, no matter what it might do to his reputation. He's almost resigned to leave London and the Prosecutor's Office presuming his name will be permanently disgraced, but it's Kazuma who encourages him to stay and continue fighting for the truth in the courtroom.
Kazuma begins to reconcile with Van Zieks, even if he can't truly forgive him for prosecuting his father. He chooses to remain a prosecutor, recognizing that he has to fight his own inner demons and do some personal growth of his own.
Iris has decided to give up the search on finding her "true" father and has acknowledged Sholmes as such, even calling him "The Greatest." But Sholmes has decided that eventually, Iris will know the truth about her parentage.
The minor one or two-case characters also reappear to give some giggles in the post-case credits scenes too.
(My little Benbaro/Harebaro heart was happy to see Albert Harebrayne return since Barok as invited him back to London to go sightseeing. Awww.)
Also the usual British Judge stepping up to declare Barok van Zieks Not Guilty was a nice touch. (I guess I did get my Turnabout Goodbyes parallel after all!)
Overall, I believe The Great Ace Attorney had a nice ending. Was it perfect? No. But did it stick to the overall themes of the story and deliver on those? Absolutely. Was I sold on the Ryunosuke - Kazuma dynamic at the very end? Certainly! Do I want Barok van Zieks to have some relief in what he believes to be a turbulent future ahead? Of course! Is Susato Mikotoba now my favorite assistant of all time? You bet!
I enjoyed the time I spent with this game as I unraveled the mystery of the main story, got to know the characters and really immersed myself in this world. I am glad I picked it up, and I know for sure I will play it again sometime in the future. The game mechanics (old and new) were enjoyable, the music was always on point and the sound effects just added to the bigger picture.
My blind play through was truly a remarkable experience. And one of my favorite Ace Attorney entries, maybe even one of my favorite Nintendo Switch games of all time.
I look forward to the Escapade chapters, which I will look into very soon!

Still trying to figure out why TGAA2-4 and TGAA2-5 set off my "man this is a lot of dudes dudeing" hackles when the other Ace Attorney final cases do not - I thought my baseline expectation of AA was that it's dude-centric while having rad female characters, but apparently it might've been higher, because those two TGAA cases meet that bar.
I kinda see the difference once I iterate through every other installment's (AA1-AA6, AAI1-2, crossover) finale. There's two levels to it.
There's the backstory level, where if you exclude TGAA all the other finales' have at least one major female player figuring into the drama of the backstory, often more. Misty Fey was nowhere near the elevator on DL-6 but she is inseparable from the case, for instance, and that radiates out to Mia and Maya.
Sithe comes closest, with her role in the Professor coverup, but she gets uninterestingly shuffled off in 2-3, her daughter relaying her reports in a way that dilutes both their presences. Even in the finale with the biggest similarity to this - dude-heavy conspiracy with only one female participant, we see more of that participant than we do Sithe, and there's another woman invested in exposing the conspiracy.
Then there's the present-day courtroom and investigation. Which sounds odd, given that if we're playing a male character as we usually are, we almost always have a female assistant around. There's a lot of room for variety here though. I'll take 1-4 again, both because it is the most-played finale case and so I hopefully won't be spoiling anyone, and also because it's a case where the victims were dudes, the arrested suspects were dudes, the only people within five feet of the both crime scenes were dudes, the only living people with previous direct connections to those dudes are dudes (we haven't met Franziska yet), so you know, it has as much of an excuse as any finale to focus solely on the dudes.
But Maya holding onto the bullet is what clinches us the case. It's not the biggest thing Maya ever does, but IDK, it's more interesting to me than Iris's part in the hologram deus ex machina. Heck, even comparing the finales of TGAA1 and TGAA2, in TGAA1 Susato's and Gina's decisions change how the incident and case play out, while in TGAA2 they each get bummed out for different reasons but don't do anything uniquely instrumental.
Anyway, I mostly like the puzzle-solving and emotional logic of TGAA2-4 and TGAA2-5, but I also would not have minded either Klint's widow (dead from childbirth) or Genshin's widow (dead from grief) surviving to the present day to have some feelings of their own and/or cause some drama of their own instead of being one of the three dead wives.
#tgaa#tgaa meta#the great ace attorney#brett exists but brett is a non-character#i guess it also being one case across two doesn't help?#where it's very long#and with all the other very long cases you have more women involved more heavily even if they aren't part of the final long interrogation#1-5 duh#5-4 + 5-5 no shit#6-5 yeah#mine

I saw your post about how you would have Portwell get back together, and I wanted to know how you would write the story in case they don't get back together and Gina stays with Ricky (which will most likely happen). What would you do with both EJ and Gina's personal arcs, their friendship and friendships with other characters (existing already in the show and also your own original characters), and EJ's love life (won't ask about Gina's for obv reasons)?
I'll be honest... I have a hard time envisioning any kind of satisfying arc for Gina if she stays with Ricky. And I KNOW people will think that's me being a bitter shipper, but it's not. I just don't see how they compliment each other long term. Ricky needs to learn to grow for HIMSELF, not for Nini or Gina, so the idea that he would somehow be ready for a life in New York or LA (which he expressly says he doesn't want in the S3 finale) BECAUSE of Gina feels a little toxic. I want him to have growth independent of his romantic pairing. And while Gina's arc is about learning to trust, I don't want her compromising what she wants for him. They just don't seem compatible to me long term, and so I don't really know where I'd have Gina go if she remains in that pairing. And while in the end, I would love it if Portwell gets back together, I'm also ok if Gina ends up with a new love interest or no love interest at all. I just don't want her and Ricky to magically "fix" each other, because there are REAL issues there that I don't have faith that they'll address because they're just going to make R*na the centerpiece.
Overall, I want the core friendships back that made the first two seasons feel like my own theater kid experience. I want to see Carlos and Gina together, and Ashlyn and EJ. I want to get away from the 'ship wars' the third season fed and focus on the rest of their lives, too.
And for EJ, all I really want is someone to acknowledge how hard he worked over the summer and how unsupported he was. Ideally in my mind, it would be Gina because a lot of what happened with them was just poor communication from them both and I KNOW they're capable of better, but I would also appreciate it from Ashlyn or Carlos.
I don't mean to be a downer, LOL! But yeah, I'm not sure I can figure out how to work within arcs that I don't feel make sense for these characters without some MAJOR ret-con or deus ex machina type resolutions.

Angelus Ex Machina (4697 words) by Tolpen Chapters: 1/3 Fandom: 大逆転裁判 | Dai Gyakuten Saiban | The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles (Video Games) Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Gina Lestrade/Original Character, Sherlock Holmes | Herlock Sholmes/Mikotoba Yuujin Characters: Gina Lestrade (Dai Gyakuten Saiban), Sherlock Holmes | Herlock Sholmes (Dai Gyakuten Saiban), Mikotoba Yuujin, Original Characters, Other Character Tags to Be Added Additional Tags: Mystery, Original Character(s), POV Alternating, Romantic relationships are background, Other Additional Tags to Be Added Series: Part 3 of Clockwork Heart Summary:
Yuujin Mikotoba had visited the United States of America as a guest lecturer for two years, and now he returns to London. Upon reaching the English shores another passenger disappears. Her enigmatic older brother, and her fiancé recruit the greatest detective to find her. Who is this mysterious Miss Minerva, and who would want her to disappear? Meanwhile Inspector Gina Lestrade searches for a missing mother of her close friend and colleague in a hardboiled fashion. But of course, nothing is ever straightforward, and the unofficial case quickly spirals into something more dangerous.
Enoch Drebber would like to remind everyone that none if this is his problem, please stop getting him involved, he is not a key to either of those mysteries. He is, of course, completely right. He is not a key. His is the lock.
Obligatory Excerpt:
Well then, gentlemen,” Holmes sprung to his feet again. “Mr. Foeward, good Father, we shall call upon you in your hotel the moment our investigation makes progress. I assure you that I shall see poor Miss Minerva safely returned to her family. Do not fret, do not worry; these kind of things do take time, especially when there are so few leads.” With such reassurances he ushered them out of the door, and only once he checked through the window that they had truly left Baker Street, he turned to Mikotoba: “Well, what do you think?” “I think,” Mikotoba said carefully, “that I am going to call on a mason to extract the remaining pieces from the wall. What on Earth have you been doing with them, Sherlock?” “I was playing shogi with Iris’s friend. Leave them be Yuujin, I shall put it upon him to get them out,” the man threw his frame back into the armchair upside down, lanky legs thrown over the headrest. He maintained that it allowed him to think better with more blood pouring to saturate his brain. Yuujin Mikotoba, who had his educated medicine thoughts about it, was content to leave him like that, because it meant the detective would be quiet for at least an hour and wouldn’t get under his feet. Yuujin thought that he could finally go and unpack his belongings for the stay, but Sherlock called out to him: “I still want to hear your thoughts on the disappearance of Miss Minerva. Doubly so, for you have met her.”

Rambling about Legend of Vox Machina casting credits
So like everyone else, I've heard about IMDB putting up cast credits for the first half of The Legend of Vox Machina's second season. There's been the delightful news, of course, such as Matt voicing Victor, and Robbie and Aimee getting to do voicework for the show. But looking at the actual episode credits for everyone, there's some interesting news as well. This will contain spoilers:
Arranging this more or less by actor, just to make things easier for myself as I scroll down IMDB's page:
Matt: Voicing Umbrasyl in at least episodes 1, 5, and 6, Craven Edge in episodes 2,3, 5 & 6, an adaro in episode 3, Victor in episode 2, and Purvan Suul in episode 4. We'd expect to see Umbrasyl in the first episode, obviously, and 6 makes sense, too, since we've got credits for Kevdak and Zanror in that episode as well. But I wonder what he's doing in episode 5, exactly. Meanwhile, it seems Grog holds onto that sword at least until about the time it turned on him on stream, though that could still happen any time before his fight with Kevdak (where, in the trailer, we saw him using his axe instead). Also, it seems Vox Machina will be fighting as aquatic monstrosity in place of the beholder, which kind of makes sense. Victor's appearing in the most obvious episode for him too. The really interesting voice credit is Purvan Suul, and for the episode right after the Sunken Tomb. While I am very much hoping for Age of Arcanum flashbacks, that would be a little late for them. I wonder if Vax is going to hear from him while communing with the Raven Queen.
Liam: Voicing Vorugal in episode 1 only, at least in the season's first half. So again, why is Umbrasyl in episode 5 when Vorugal isn't?
Esme Creed-Miles & Gina Torres: Voicing Cassandra and Keeper Yennen in episode 1 only. We're probably not going see much of Whitestone during the season's first half.
Indira Varma & Stephanie Beztriz: Voicing Allura and Kima in episode 5, with Allura also in episode one. 1's obvious enough; it's a little odder Kima's not in that episode, since the series puts her in Emon already, but perhaps that was just how the editing went. 5's a little more interesting. The assumption is it'll involve closing the rift in Pyrah, but I wonder if we'll get a flashback to them imprisoning Thordak. Or if they'll even come to Pyrah to help seal it, but that raises the question of why neither of them appear in the between episodes.
Kelly Hu: Voicing Anna Ripley in episode 5. Which is really interesting, especially since Matt's credits for that episode are only for Umbrasyl, Trinket, and Craven Edge. So if she's not buying gunpowder from Victor, and she's *probably* not showing up to kill Percy just yet, what is she doing??
Sunil Mahotra and Eugene Byrd: Voicing Gilmore and Jarrett only in episode 1, at least in the season's first half. Which makes me sad, and worried for Jarrett's survival especially. I don't *think* they'd kill Gilmore...
Will & Mary: Voices Kash and Zahra in episodes 2-4. Which makes sense, mostly. Hopefully we see them heading for Whitestone in episode 4, since they apparently don't go to Pyrah.
Fred Tatasciore, Janet Varney, & Kestrel Riegal: Voicing Korrin, Vilya, and young Keyleth in episode 5. Obviously we're getting a flashback to Keyleth's young years in this episode. It also leaves uncertain whether or not Korrin will show in Pyrah, since he could just be in said flashback. Keyleth's aramente trial's obviously going to become sealing the rift, so perhaps she'll have to do that without her father's help.
Lance Reddick & Cree Summer: Voicing Thordak and Raishan in episodes 1 & 3. But not, apparently, in episode 5, so if there is a flashback of Thordak being imprisoned, perhaps he simply doesn't say anything in it? Raishan would also have to free him silently, but perhaps that part will simply be implied. Episode 3's also a little bit of an odd time for them to be appearing instead, though perhaps the series just wants to keep track of the two most important dragons even when they're away from our heroes.
Alanna Ubach & Tony Plana: Voicing the sphinxes in episode 6, with Ossysa also in episode 2. The main question is why Ossya's in episode 6, but it might just be Vox Machina remembering her words.
Troy Baker: Voicing Syldor in episode 3. Which is does not make sense for Syldor to make a personal appearance in, so I'm pretty sure we're getting either a flashback or one of the twins hearing his voice in their head. Cue the angst!
Ralph Ineson & Abubaker Salim: Voicing Kevdak and Zanror in episode 6. Which Umbrasyl is also in, so obviously, we're getting at least one scene of Westrun, probably as setup for the following episodes. No credit for any inhabitants to Westrun though, so we might even just see them forming their alliance.
Ike Amadi, Robbie, Aimee, and Sumalee's appearances in their specific episodes are all pretty self-explanatory.
Not appearing in the first half of the season: Dr. Dranzel and Kaylee! We know they're in it, but apparently not in Vasselheim? Perhaps in Westrun? No credits for Henry Winkler either, but it makes sense he'd only appear once Vox Machina actually reaches the city.

gina giiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiina noir also fuck, ghost valley. no beta we dying like cindy stone AIDGFHFUHD
Gina Noir is just the old name of Angelus Ex Machina. My original plan was to write it from Gina Lestrade's POV in the style of a noir crime story. The first section even adhers to that.
It's actually supposed to be a yet another Eeny story. This time it features Drebber's family and some grave robbing, and potentially angels.[1]
[1] They are not real.[2]
[2] They are also not angels.
Ghost Valley was an "Afterlife is actually Stardew Valley" fic, but I deleted it. Or orphaned it, idk. It was bad.

Just watched Annihilation and... It's a lot to take in. I can't make up my mind about whether it's better than Ex Machina. Amazing cinematography. Oscar and Natalie killed it, but I also liked Tessa Thompson, Gina Rodriguez and Jennifer Jason Leigh in it.

Finished playing Great Ace Attorney 2!
Overall, I'm left with mixed feelings about the last case. There are some things I enjoyed - Kazuma as a prosecutor and his whole character arc was very juicy, Stronghart and Jigoku made for fun villains as judges, the overall thrust of the case was okay - and things that left me cold - still too many leaps of logic, things that are accepted as true with no good reasons (like Gregson's role for the Reaper that people just start stating and is immediately accepted as fact with no real evidence, the game resorting to outright magic and deus ex machina (or Sholmes ex Lucky Charms-a) in order to progress.
At least it was pretty exciting. I also enjoyed the character arc of Gina, and then finally sold me on her being a detective based upon her feelings. I also found myself rather liking Gorey too, and the redhead criminals (despite flinching hard about Rousseau being introduced as a noble's name).
One thing I found very superfluous overall was the entire mystery of Iris' parentage. First, I didn't really care in the first place. Second, it came out as a very unsatisfying and unlikely reveal. So what, Van Zieks never knew his sister in law was even pregnant? How likely is that? And then he's supposed to accept his niece is going to live completely separated from his family and his feelings about it aren't even explored? Oh, and we must have another dead mother who barely exists in term of agency in order to make it happen too. We didn't need any particular origin for Iris tbh is my feeling.
Van Zieks ended up ok in term of character arc at the end. At least we got to some mileage angst out of him about his brother toward the end that was a little bit interesting.
Asides from how it is introduced, I liked the final investigation we did with Sholmes and Mikotoba. The deduction segments were always the one part of the gameplay which I really did enjoy and this one was no exception (except for part with the number because I found one of the number downright unreadable). However I don't have strong feelings about Mikotoba one way or the other. And Sholmes I found mostly antipathetic through most of the game of course.
One thing that annoyed me about the ending was Susato returning to Japan without addressing the fact that she's banned from the courtroom as a woman. I suppose there's a little nonsensical segment in the ending credits that point out that may change but that's a little bit hard to take seriously. Susato was my favorite character throughout the game except for Kazuma, and I cared more about her having a fulfilling career than about her sticking with Ryunosuke and the game did little to assuage my feelings.
Ryuonosuke himself is a character that felt throughout the game so very generic and bland I can barely think of anything distinguishing him as a character.
One thing I can really compliment the game about however is the Victorian atmosphere. At turns modern and gloomy, highly contrasted, with the importance of money and breeding being paramount; all the cases in one way or another addressed the victorian age thematically.
In the end this couple of game is going to be my least favorite addition to the Ace Attorney series, below Ace Attorney Investigation 1 which at least I enjoyed the gameplay of a whole lot. That leaves me still with Spirit of Justice to play though (if i can manage to bring myself to use my 3ds again).

For the writing ask game... How about 10 and 82?
10: at what point in the process do you come up with titles, and how easy or hard is that for you?
I usually come up with the title after I write the story (if it's a one-shot) or after I finish the first chapter (if there are chapters). I then have a staring contest with the AO3 "Work Title" box, coming to the realisation that the fic is named [fandom abbrevation] - [inside joke/up to five word summary of what's going on] such as "aa - cursed larry" (that's Starfury) or "aa - gina noir" (that's Angelus Ex Machina)
So I and the box are exchanging looks for a minute or two before i pick a line from the work, twist it around and make it reference something. For example Lapse in judgement/Dodge a bullet is named that because the kick-off is Manfred's, uh, 'lapse in judgement' and Gregory literally dodges a bullet, as in he doesn't get shot. The Real Feeling of Sharing series started as a parody-with-a-twist on self-insert Modern Girl In Thedas fics, and it felt appropriate to use lyrics from anime opening as a title. Me being out of loop of anime for years, I asked my salty beanpole boyfriend, and he referred me to Reinai Circulation from Monogatari. Original Feeling of Sharing because Origins. Unexpected Feeling of Sharing because nobody expects the (Spanish) Inquisition.
That being said, it's taken me 13 years to do it in under 2 minutes.
82: “proper” punctuation or all lowercase?
I am going to be real with you: You show me to a fic in all lower case, and I show myself to the close tab button. That's not to say lower case doesn't have it's place, when you are writing something like online messages etc. I also don't see the appeal of naming the fic in all lower case. It's a name. Names deserve at least one capital letter.
