2022 was the year I reconnected with my inner fan. After several years of having been packed up and set in the corner, talking only to herself in hushed tones, she took one look at Bernie Wolfe and Serena Campbell on a windy roof. Suddenly with a great whoosh she was set free again.
Thankfully I remembered that that Tumblr thing was the place for fannishness and not evil birdsite. Maybe it was a google search that brought me here, I don’t know.
And here I found a wonderful set of fun, kind, witty and wicked smart, fannish humans.
Thank you for accepting me into the social circle around the fire of fannish discussion and creation.
And thanks to Serena and Bernie, and Catherine and Jemma for just being!
I can’t wait to see what 2023 will bring!

Which companion is most likely to wander off?
this tournament was suggested by @a-tad-bit-obsessed a little over a year ago
a penchant for wandering off is a core trait of practically every companion, but who is first out of the starting blocks even when its incredibly dangerous, who cannot stay put no matter how imperative, who can the doctor not afford to let out of their sights?

It's bloody well your turn, 27! Top 10 hottest fictional women/people of all time?! 😁
Well well well... If it isn't the ask I was going to answer whether anyone asked me or not. 😂
Some would call me "over prepared", "unable to count" or just plain "thirsty"... and they would all be correct.
So let's do this...
1. Ava Silva - Warrior Nun
I tried to limit myself to one character per work of fiction and this was the hardest one to narrow down from simply ALL OF THEM. EVERY SINGLE WOMAN IN WARRIOR NUN IS AN ABSOLUTE SMOKE SHOW. This is helped, considerably by the fact that they all can, and would, snap my neck. Woof. But I made myself choose. So here we go. (SorryBeaSorryLillithSorryMummySupesSorrySexyDoctorJillianSorryTheAbsoluteDeityOfHotnessThatIsShotgunMary!!!)
Exhibit A
Exhibit B
2. Bette Porter - The L Word. She's a legend for a reason. If you're ever having a bad day just hit up YouTube and find a super cut of Bette Porter swearing. Never fails. 16 year old me would turn myself inside out for this woman. (37 year old me probably still would too, who am I kidding)
Exhibit A
3. Jane Rizzoli - Rizzoli and Isles. See the last 6 months of this blog for my complete derangement facilitated by doomsday luring me over here from Supercorp. Yes we know Angie Harmon is kind of evil, yes we do still very much want to get under it anyway. Black button up supremacy!
Exhibit A
4. Bo Dennis -Lost Girl. It's Anna Silk? Playing a pansexual succubus who needs to have lots of sex or she dies?? And did I mention it is Anna Silk?? Just an amazing sex-pollen crack fic come to actual life.
Exhibit A
5. Carson Shaw - A League of Their Own. Ok, I will admit to being severely under-medicated when this show came out. And that was probably a factor in me going absolutely BATSHIT FERAL for Abby Jacobson in this role. The dimples? The arms? The cheeky little smile and the innocent little face. Urrrggghh. I. Just. Want. To. Squish. Her.
Exhibit GAY:
6. Faith - BtVS. One of the first hotties to penetrate this prickly exterior. She's a smoke show. Everyone knows it, especially her. When she swaggers in to season 7 after busting out of jail to stop the apocalypse ? ((Chef's kiss))
We present to the bench m'lord
7. Stella Gibson - The Fall. Urghhhhhhhh. Look. It's Gillian Fucking Anderson playing the most sexually liberated, yet morally dubious character we've ever seen. She wears suits. She tells men to fuck off. She drinks wine like she's making slow love to it. SHE KISSES ARCHI PANJABI.
If it pleases the court
Exhibit B
8. Jane the Vicar - Collateral. Ok, this one is maybe out of left field but I needed Nicola Walker on my list and I narrowed it down to This Nicola Walker because a) canonically (heh) gay and b) vicar's outfit (ok sue me). She also maintains that pathetic wet cat of a woman vibe that she does so well while being slightly less depressing than in Scott and Bailey.
The prosecution rests
9. Debbie / Lou in Ocean's 8. Yes. I know I'm breaking my own rule. Shut up. It was going to just be Debbie but I was looking at the evidence and it really is the pair of them together where the magic happens. We've seen both these actors be depressingly unsexy in other things (sorry. *cough*Carol*cough*) but in this they Just Eye Fuck for 2 hours and it's AMAZING.
Exhibit A
10. Villanelle - Killing Eve. Show me one woman who does not want to be murdered intimately by Villanelle and I'll show you a fucking liar. I present her 2 best looks for the jury...
Exhibit 1 - the suit and tie and ring a ding ding situation...
Exhibit 2 - the cable knit that rewired my ovaries and made me genuinely want to have little murderous babies for her.
10a. Commander Lexa - The 100. Gone but never forgotten. Continuing a pattern of brunette, lethal and soft as a kitten's arsehole for one specific blonde woman.
Honourable mentions...
M'lady
Mare of Eastown!! Every time a male show runner tries to make a beautiful woman less beautiful by mucking her up a bit I howl at her for a decade.
Diana Leatherby in Tipping the Velvet. I read the book at the tender age of 16. When I say I will never see a wooden chair the same way I mean it. Anna Chancellor in the BBC adaptation is only maybe 70% the hottie my brain cooked up tho.
Root and Shaw in Person of Interest - lost out because I couldn't choose between them!
Alex Danvers in Supergirl. Chyler Leigh is hot as fuck in this role, especially with her shaved hair. But I haven't watched enough of the actual show to judge her personality. I get the impression she becomes a bit of a cunt....
Mickey Knight in the JM Redmann books. Excluded because no one will have heard of her but lives in my heart and sexy musing forever. 🔥😘

Mini-Tournaments Contestent Lists
Green is for definite inclusion
Red is for maybes (opinions on if they should be included are welcome)
I am not familiar with EU companions, so if any of them should be included, please tell me (note, numbers are capped at 16 per tournament, EU companions won't be added if it would mean removing TV companions). They'll be listed in green as definite inclusions until the list is too long, companions in red will be removed first
Also, I'm writing these lists off the top of my head, so if I've forgotten someone obvious, let me know

Also, what about Call of the wild? 👀
Thank you for asking!!!! You are the best <3. Another animals story. This split from the L'matya hunter actually. Soooo....this one is hard to explain about Spock without giving away the plot but know he is there, lol. There are pre-historic animals involved.
Jim (leader of the group, mix of biologist, adventurer, explorer, conservationist), Bones (veternanian), Chapel (animal nurse/assistant vet) live together as friends. And then Areel Shaw as a lawyer will be part of the story. And Gillian Taylor will show up and become Christine's love interest.
I am posting an unedited excerpt of the first few paragraphs from the first draft under the cut. Hope you like it :).
Jim settled on the bench by the bay window, curling his hands around the steaming mug to warm the chill from his bones, watching the world outside slowly wake up in the dim light. The rest of the house was quiet and dark. He cherished the stillness tucked in these early moments - to feel the beating of his heart, the passing of cold air through his lungs, the swish of air as it touched him deep inside, gave him life before leaving his body to disperse away forever. Jim brought his mug to his lips and inhaled the aroma before taking his first sip.
Somewhere above his head the floorboards creaked. Jim looked up and smiled to himself. They had a ritual. Jim always woke up first, spent an hour on his day’s research, showered, got dressed, and by the time he would be drinking his coffee, the others would start rousing. Usually Bones first, followed by Chris (Chapels’ nickname here). Jim had skipped the first three steps today. He was still dressed in the clothes he had arrived in late in the night.
He turned his head back towards the window. He could make out movement in the dome roofed enclosure west of their house. A moment later, large, blue and green plumed birds rose out of the dense foliage inside, their majestic wings beating up and down powerfully and rose up towards the eastern horizon. Shrill calls broke the spell the night had cast. Jim’s heart swelled at the sight. He would never tire of the beauty of his Andorian prehistoric eagles.
He had missed them. It had been just one week that he had been away. His attention diverted from the eagles when he felt the house shake. Jim scanned the far corners of his sanctuary with his trained eyes. Morning fog lay thick on the grounds and trees not letting in the feeble pre-dawn sunlight. For anyone else there would be nothing to see in the darkness outside but Jim spotted the long neck of one of the two endangered Romulan Brachiosaurus moving through the 50 meter tall trees. Gracefully the animal reached up for a lower branch of a gigantic tree, its front legs lifting off the grounds. Then, with a thud which Jim felt across the distance, the creature landed back on the ground, shaking its massive head slowly to dislodge the leaves stuck on its head. The last two remaining specimens of the gentle giants were Jim’s dearest treasure as well as cause for deep concern.

Happy 64th Birthday Brian Alexander "B. A." Robertson, born September 12th 1956.
Robertson was born and raised in Glasgow attending the former Allan Glen's School, Glasgow,[and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama. He recorded his first album "Wringing Applause", for Ardent Records in 1973. It enjoyed modest critical acclaim, and a nomination in Down Beat Magazine's year end poll. He made four further albums, but had little commercial success.
During these years, he combined his career as an artist in a writing and production partnership with bassist Herbie Flowers. BA wrote and produced with Herbie, and worked with an eclectic crowd, including Lionel Bart, Joe Brown, Jim Cregan, Ray Cooper, Micky Dolenz, Gillian Gregory, Georg Kajanus, Harry Nilsson, Phil Pickett, Annie Ross, Sandie Shaw, and Chris Spedding.
He made his first television appearance with Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel (1976), played piano on the B side of "Come Up And See Me Make Me Smile".
Before finding fame in his own right B A teamed up with guitarist Terry Britten and wrote over 20 worldwide hits, the pick of them for Cliff Richard, the songs Carrie and Wired for Sound, the latter was nominated Ivor Novello Song of the Year in 1981.
It was around the same time his singing career took off. He enjoyed chart success in Europe, with six hit singles as an artist. The first, "Bang Bang", achieved sales over 1 million, the last Flight 19, in 1982, a #1 in Iceland! This track inspired a ground breaking music video directed by Brian Grant. BA was nominated Ivor Novello Songwriter of the Year 1980, UK Male Vocalist, Daily Mirror Rock & Pop Awards 1980, JVC Scottish Musician of the Year 1982. He recorded with Maggie Bell in 1982, Frida from Abba, 83, and Lulu in 84.
As well as appearing in concert, he also featured on radio and television. Was a frequent guest broadcaster for the BBC, from 1980 to 1985. Hosted his own music series "BA In Music". In 1986 he was commissioned to compose the music for The Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh. He has written more than 30 themes, songs, and scores, for film, television and special events. These include "The Other Side of The World" by Chaka Khan for the motion picture "White Nights", music for one of the UK's longest running talk shows "Wogan", and "We Have A Dream" for Scotland's World Cup Football Squad of 1982.
Throughout the 80's and 90's he continued to write and work in the studio with another diverse group, including Sam Brown, Roger Daltrey, Lonnie Donegan, Dave Edmunds, Bernard Edwards, Peter Frampton, Alan Gorrie, John Jarvis, Maz + Kilgore, Joe Sample, Helena Springs, and Andy Taylor (Duran Duran).
He met Genesis guitarist Mike Rutherford in 1985, and began a second long term writing collaboration. He introduced Paul Carrack to the embryo Mike & The Mechanics. As writer and musician, he featured on six of their studio albums. Wrote their first hit single "Silent Running", Billboard's number 1 Rock Song of 1986, and the international success, "The Living Years". This most celebrated of his lyrics written when his father died twelve weeks before the birth of his son.
At the 1990 Grammy Awards, "The Living Years" had four nominations, including Song of the Year. BA was pipped for the statuettes by good friend Arif Mardin and "The Wind Beneath My Wings". In London, at The Ivor Novellos, 'The Living Years' topped 1991 Grammy winner "Another Day in Paradise" for Best Song.
He was invited to set up offices at The Walt Disney Studio, by Michael Eisner, and Jeffrey Katzenburg. BA moved with his family to Los Angeles. He remained a feature on the lot for over three years. Was Creator, and Producer of Grammy nominated, multi-platinum, music video, "Simply Mad About The Mouse". Artists include Harry Connick Jnr., LL Cool J., Billy Joel, and Bobby McFerrin.
1991 saw "Silent Running" and "The Living Years", awarded "MillionAir" status by BMI, for more than one million broadcast performances in the US. "Silent Running" has now reached almost three million plays, and 'The Living Years' over four.
From 1993 through 1995, he put together, "With Your Hand on My Heart" for Patti LaBelle and Michael Crawford. Michael's album had a double Grammy nomination and world wide sales of more than 2 million. Wrote music for "Baywatch", the world's most popular television show and collaborated on a musical with Burt Bacharach.
He continued to work with Mike & The Mechanics, had six songs in the "Beggar On A Beach of Gold" project including the title song, and another six on their, multi-platinum CD, "Hits". He worked as writer, and musical associate to Phil Ramone on the stage production "EFX”, at the MGM Grand Las Vegas. The opening song "Somewhere in Time”, a collaboration with John Barry.
For the past 20 years or so Robertson has lived in Ireland, continually working on various projects he is still in high demand, Over the years, B A has accumulated more than 70 silver, gold, and platinum record awards. He lives with his wife, designer Karen Manners, they have two adult children.
I've chosen this song because it is my favourite Scottish World goal offering, remember, if you are old enough, four years previously, Andy Cameron proclaimed, We're Going to WIN the world Cup, by the time 1982 came B A Robertson knew that it was a dream. Oh I must add, the last World Cup Scotland was in 1998, and the much more realistic song was by Del Amitri, and calle Don't come home too soon, which as always we did, failing to get beyond the first stages yet again

This may seem like a nonsensical question saying you have thousands of words of prose written publicly but just out of curiosity I was wondering if you prefer to write poetry or prose and which one you enjoy reading more? Consider memoir and nonfictional creative essays/whatever else similar to that as prose too just for the sake of simplicity.
not nonsensical! this is a very neat question and i hope my overly long answer makes sense.
for writing: i think i prefer to write whatever i feel like is more appropriate for the story im trying to tell, 'story' referring less to a narrative but what I'm trying to get out of myself and/or tell the reader. i love writing essays when i want to expand on a central thesis, do research, and prove my knowledge- every time i write an essay for a class i am hitting the word limit rather than the word minimum.
i do write poetry that i tend to not publish (that might change tho!) because what i write about is very very very intimately influenced by my personhood; ive written about my mum's passing, grief, my sexuality and gender, self harm, mental health, etc. it's not so much that it's "private information", but it's much more vulnerable for me to share than prose, which may include elements of that (ie, eve's therapy and vil's therapy talk in TME is detailed bc i have done lots of therapy; the butchfemme aspects of thin walls are there bc i am butch) but it's gussied up in another narrative, it's not the focal piece. my poems about grief or gender or what have you are about the subject at hand, not just themed. poems strike, prose grows.
for reading: i think i have more experience in reading prose, but i tend to realllllly go for poetic prose? i bring this up virtually every single time i talk about what influences my writing/reading but written on the body by jeanette winterson is the perfect example of what i mean. the narrative is fairly simple: our protagonist (given no name or gender) has a complex affair with a married woman, told while reflecting on past lovers and relationships- but the way it's delivered is unlike anything else I've ever read. there are no discernable chapters, there are occasional formatting breaks into stage direction, it's rich with imagery- when the protagonist learns that their lover is sick, there is an entire segment of detailed anatomical studies that devolve into personal anguish about how that anatomy will be changed, or has changed, or is changing, or how they wish they could take on their lover's changes if only she were to remain healthy and well. it's really difficult for me to describe, in all honesty, without dumping quotation after quotation right from the source. instead, i will just show you the first section:
one of the anatomical pieces:
and one of my absolute pieces of writing:
other examples i pretty much always bring up for similar reasons are annihilation by jeff vandermeer and sharp objects by gillian flynn. naomi alderman's disobedience also comes to mind.
but i also read other stuff, obviously!
some nonfiction/autobiographical/memoir-adjacent works i love are the glass castle by jeanette walls, a walk in the woods by bill bryson, the memory illusion by dr. julia shaw.

the next tournament is impossible Doctor-Companion pairings
hello hello, mini tournament time. first things first, nominations
you can nominate any doctor alongside any companion within the following rules
they MUST be an actual companion, not just any old character (I usually compare to this list, but I know its incomplete in some areas and includes characters i wouldn't consider companions in others so its not automatically qualifying or disqualifying)
the doctor and the companion cannot have met on screen, exceptions can be made if you have a compelling enough argument
they can have met in the eu provided it was only brief, so at most one story (i'm sure everyone has met everyone somewhere so it would be unreasonable to say otherwise)
in the hopes of this tournament not ballooning to ridiculous size, a maximum of one pairing per companion will be included in the tournament proper

28. the last book u read? did u like it?
the last book i finished was "when you call my name" by tucker shaw, it's a heavy topic but an important one! some writing choices weren't super great, for my opinion, but overall i really enjoyed it!
currently reading "the world after alice" by lauren aliza green and i don't like any characters or the choices they're making afshdjdkd but i love books with messy family dynamics and reading about characters and their relationships with each other, character driven plot, so i am having fun
