Top Things To Do In Caboolture
Top Things To Do In Caboolture Qld
We recently ran into an excellent article online from visitbrisbane.com.au which highlights some of the best things to do in Caboolture and the surrounding Moreton Bay Region. We have personally experienced most of these ourselves and can vouch for them 100%. With our personal favorite being the Woodford Folk Festival. Get out there and experience and live more of your lives.
34 things to do in the Moreton Bay Region
From the salty sea air by the bayside at Redcliffe to the lush rainforest greens of the D’Aguilar range, Moreton Bay Region is an area rich with diversity. Get an adrenaline rush from the air, experience one of its world-class events, explore the environment and more.
Read on to discover 34 things to do in the Moreton Bay Region.
1. Explore D’Aguilar National Park
On the doorstep of Brisbane city, the massive D’Aguilar Range is split in two – South D’Aguilar takes in Mt Coot-tha in Brisbane right up to Mt Nebo and Mt Glorious behind Samford Valley, and the north Mount Mee section is just up the road from Dayboro with plenty of lookouts and swimming holes.
2. Go whale watching
From June to October each year, depart Redcliffe Jetty with Brisbane Whale Watching and see the magical humpback giants in action. Cruise around the bay for four hours, enjoy lunch and commentary from skipper Kerry and her team of experts.
3. Drive over to Bribie Island and explore the beaches
The only Queensland island connected to the mainland by bridge, Bribie Island is easy to access yet feels like a world away. An escape to the island is ideal for nature lovers, water sport enthusiasts and families alike. Discover 20 things to do on Bribie Island here.
4. Get adrenaline pumping at skying diving or adventure flights
If you’ve ever wanted to feel the wind rush through your hair from such a height – then there’s no time like the present. Head up into the air in a tiger moth with the Aero Dynamic Flight Academy or Antique Airways, jump from a plane with Bribie Skydivers, Jump the Beach Brisbane or Skydive Caboolture, glide through the air with Gliding Adventure Flights or Caboolture Gliding Club, and go up in a chopper with Oceanview Helicopters, S & S Aviation or Airwork Helicopters.
5. Boogie down Bee Gees Way
How Deep Is Your Love for the Bee Gees? Did you know the Gibb brothers grew up in the region? You Should Be Dancing your way down this walkway that honors the world-famous pop group, that was officially opened by Barry Gibb in 2015. There are light shows set to music nightly, for that Night Fever.
6. Go for a scenic drive along the coast or through the forests
Follow the coastline from Redcliffe through Deception Bay and Beachmere through to Bribie Island; or head inland through Samford Valley to Woodford. It’s then easy to make your way back to Brisbane via the highway.
7. Play in Pumicestone Passage
The channel runs 35km between Bribie Island and the Caboolture coastline, acting as a protected marine park and safe haven for wildlife. It’s popular with water sports enthusiasts and nature lovers – take a guided kayak tour, wind or kitesurf, go bird watching, pump for yabbies, hire a barbecue boat, float along on the Bribie Island Gondola or simply watch the magic of a sunset over the Glasshouse Mountains.
8. Fly a kite at Pelican Park in Clontarf
Kiteflyers are a regular sight every first and third Sunday of the month, from 12-4pm, at Pelican Park. Take the kids along to watch them soar through the sky.
9. Take the family to Settlement Cove Lagoon
A resort style pool … at zero cost. Come splash about at Settlement Cove – a paradise beside the sea that’s open to the public year-round just off Redcliffe Parade. Make a day of it and pack a picnic or barbecue too.
10. Taste local drops at Ocean View Estates
Head into the hills and experience locally grown and produced wine and craft beer at Ocean View Estates. Drop by the cellar door for a tasting, linger over lunch or even make a weekend of it by staying at the on-site cottages.
11. Reconnect at Woodford Folk Festival
This mammoth annual music and cultural festival is one of the biggest of its type in Australia. Running for six days over the new year, Woodford is a magical award-winning event that features more than 2000 performers and 438 events with local, national and international talent fitting the bill.
12. Wander Scarborough Marina and eat fresh fish at Tempest Seafood
Fresh off the trawler on the Redcliffe Peninsula, head to Morgan’s Seafood for award-winning seafood while sitting among bobbing boats in Scarborough Harbour.
13. Cruise along the Moreton Bay Cycleway
Start the 26km cycleway journey at the Ted Smout Bridge, along the waterfront at Redcliffe, through Scarborough and Rothwell to Deception Bay.
14. Go camping
The question is – coastal or country? Over on Bribie Island the recreation area provides a variety of coastal camping experiences, some accessible by 4WD, others accessible by boat. In D’Aguilar National Park there are a number of campgrounds with facilities, plus remote walk-in only campsites.
15. Check out the bay on two wheels
Don your leather jacket and prepare to feel the wind in your hair on a Harley with Moreton Bay Motorcycle Tours.
16. Challenge your crew to an all-action battle
Want to fight your mates to the death? Okay, maybe that’s a little extreme. How about trying laser skirmish instead – Laser Commando and Mango Hill Skirmish will sort you out, or opt for paintball at the Skirmish Paintball Action Centre or Mango Hill Skirmish.
17. Explore art around the region
Drop into the Caboolture Regional Art Gallery to explore up to four different exhibitions in the public spaces; Dayboro Art Gallery is a community-run space located in the old Plumber’s Shop (circa 1950s); Pine Rivers Art Gallery is a public space that represents local artists in the region with a gallery shop so you can take home a local piece; and Redcliffe Art Gallery focuses on the cultural history of the region.
18. Embrace community fun at Redcliffe Festival
Celebrate the bayside across three massive weekends each August and September with a huge program of free and ticketed events. Keep a keen eye out for the Redcliffe KiteFest, Bee Gees Way Dinner, Scarborough Sounds, JettyFiesta and Redcliffe Remembers events.
19. To market, to market
From farmers’ markets to flea markets and arts and crafts fairs, Moreton Bay Region has a wide range of weekly and monthly markets all around the area. Check out a full list of local markets here.
20. Ride a horse to the pub
Saddle up to Slickers Horse Riding for the ride of a lifetime. Besides the regular style of trail rides around its Ocean View Road property (it’s called Ocean View for a reason), the family business also runs scenic trail rides to the local Crown Hotel pub in Dayboro, or the nearby winery Ocean View Estates. Giddy up!
21. Experience Australia’s largest medieval event
Every July, the Abbey Medieval Festival springs up a village of street performers, craftsmen, banquets, and entertainment. History comes alive before your eyes with jousting tournaments, knighting ceremonies and dance and combat displays. It’s held on the site of the Abbey Museum, an excellent art and archaeology attraction open year-round that covers 500,000 years of human history.
22. Sink beers and oysters at Sandstone Point Hotel
Overlooking Bribie Island, the renovated Sandstone Point Hotel has lush green lawns that roll down to Pumicestone Passage. Pick up a cheeky dozen at the oyster bar and make yourself comfortable for a solid Sunday session. Keep an eye out for boutique music festivals and other big events at the venue.
23. Walk through historic Dayboro
The cute town of Dayboro is home to plenty of historic buildings. This self-guided town walk will take you past 18 sites including the old butter factory, bootmaker and chemist shop.
24. Dine along the waterfront
Local favourite The Rustic Olive serves great pasta and even better dessert, Ceylon Inn does an awesome goat curry, and Chop Chop Sushi is the place to be for super-sized okonomoyaki with a view. Workshop Co is a small gem that does great coffee with a constantly changing breakfast menu, and Preece’s at the Jetty is an institution that does a solid breakfast trade by the water.
25. Stay on the farm
Take the whole family away to Brockhurst Cabins – even the dog. Swim in the spring-fed dam, have a barbecue, take a trail ride, or feed horses from the comfort of your deck.
26. Discover secret swimming holes to cool off in
Rocky Hole
Our favourite is Rocky Hole, a large swimming hole and waterfall in the Mt Mee section of D’Aguilar National Park. Access is recommended for 4WD vehicles only. Nearby, Stony Creek swimming hole and Neurum Creek are other spots to jump in. Closer to Brisbane, the Bunya Crossing Reserve swimming hole, Edward Allison Park at Eatons Hill and Young’s Crossing in Petrie are good spots to cool down.
27. Tee off around the region
The Pacific Harbour 18-hole championship golf course is one of the best in the Greater Brisbane region. Water is the central theme of this Bribie Island course, with it incorporating the wetlands, watercourses and native vegetation to craft a “risk and reward” style par 72 course. Been there done that? Try Caboolture, North Lakes Resort, Bribie Island, Redcliffe, Pine Rivers and Woodford golf clubs.
28. Cruise out and about in Moreton Bay
Explore the aquatic playground that is Moreton Bay with Dolphin Wild Cruises. The boat will take you out from Scarborough Marina to spot dolphins, dugongs, turtles, and whales in the marine park. Add snorkeling to your tour to get up close and personal with the subtropical fish. Further north, Ferryman Cruises offer tours along Pumicestone Passage between Bribie Island and the mainland. These include eco cruises, sunset tours and private charters.
29. Walk across the Ted Smout Bridge
It’s Australia’s longest bridge – stretching 2.7km across Bramble Bay, connecting Sandgate and Brighton with Clontarf and Redcliffe. Walk or ride along the 4.5km pedestrian and cycle path, plus keen fishermen can cast off from the many platforms.
30. Explore the region’s deer farm or walk a llama
Ever wanted to walk a llama? You do now. Dayboro Cottages and Llama Walks offer quiet getaways and llama walks open to the public. Over at Mt Samson, stop into Lyell Deer Sanctuary on weekends to hand feed the deer.
31. Picnic at Lake Samsonvale
Lake Samsonvale (North Pine Dam) was constructed in 1976 and forms part of South East Queensland’s water grid. Take a picnic down to a number of areas, or utilise the on-site public barbecues.
32. Watch and feed pelicans daily at Pelican Park
The volunteers at the Clontarf Visitor Information Centre run a pelican-checking program at 10am every day. It draws a small crowd while they check the wild birds for injuries and feed them fresh fish.
33. Toot toot! All aboard the smallest train around
In Melsa Park on Bribie Island, take the opportunity to ride a miniature steam train on 500m of track. On the third Sunday of every month the train is operating from 10am to 2.30pm for enthusiasts big and small. A ride is just $2.
34. From warplanes to poultry, visit the region’s unique museums
Bribie Island Seaside Museum
Learn about the stories of Bribie and the people who shaped, lived and loved it at the Bribie Island Seaside Museum; discover more about birdwatching, pigeon racing, breeding and bird migration at the Avicultural and Poultry Museum (the only specialist museum of its type in the Southern Hemisphere); and see a fine collection of aircraft and memorabilia at the Caboolture Warplane Museum. Article link: https://www.visitbrisbane.com.au/information/articles/destinations/things-to-do-moreton-bay-region
There is also the Samford District Historical Museum, Old Petrie Town, Durundur Railway, Caboolture Historical Village and the Woodford Community Museum to explore.
We trust you found this article helpful in making your next visit to Caboolture and the Moreton Bay Region one that you will remember for many years to come. The Moreton Bay Region offers a plethora of things to do and see for young and old.
