Special Liveries for the Official WorldSBK and MotoGP Teams for the Misano Races

The return of Giallo Ducati: special liveries for the official WorldSBK and MotoGP teams for the Misano races. Ducati pays tribute to its history in the world of racing by announcing that both the official WorldSBK (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati Team) and MotoGP (Ducati Lenovo Team) teams will compete in the Misano rounds of their respective World Championships with a special livery characterized by the return of Giallo Ducati colour.

The project was presented during a press conference held at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli in which Centro Stile Ducati Director Andrea Ferraresi took part together with the Italian designer Aldo Drudi, the man who created the special livery . The unveiling for the fans took place shortly before the formation lap of Race-1 of the Italian WorldSBK round, when the Aruba.it Racing – Ducati Team opened the garage door and the official riders, World Champion Alvaro Bautista and teammate Michael Ruben Rinaldi, entered the track astride their respective Panigale V4 R in Giallo Ducati with race suits coordinated with the shades of the bike.

Yellow is a colour that has an important tradition in the history of the Bologna-based motorcycle manufacturer. The first sport motorcycles in this colour date back to the first half of the '70s (the 750 Sport and 750 SS Desmo of the Spaggiari team), but it was in the '90s that Giallo Ducati, the colour that specifically inspired this livery, had the moment of greatest popularity with the adoption in the world of racing, which then extended to series production. The memorable models in Giallo Ducati certainly include the Ducati 748, whose racing version took Paolo Casoli to victory in the 1997 edition of the Supersport World Series, without forgetting superbikes such as the 916, 996, 749, 999 and other various models in the range.

From a chromatic point of view, the livery of the Panigale V4 R of the Aruba.it Racing – Ducati Team has been designed starting from the original graphic base. Giallo Ducati becomes the dominant colour of the bike and is crossed by black, grey and white blocks and lines, creating a combination that celebrates the sporting history of the Bologna-based motorcycle manufacturer, but at the same time gives Giallo Ducati a modern identity. Thanksgiving

You probably have to be demented to enjoy the over-the-top kills in Eli Roth’s THANKSGIVING (2023, Netflix). Well, call me demented (that’s Dr. Demented to you). Unlike other post-modern slasher films, Roth doesn’t go for humor by having characters comment on the genre. Nobody in this film feels like they’re living in a movie. The humor comes from the gleefully overdone kills, a tribute to more serious earlier films like the FRIDAY THE 13TH features and HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME (1981), noted for their creative murders. Fortunately, most of the victims are suitably heinous. Roth also makes good use of modern technology, with some jokes on streaming and social media fandom and taps into the nature of horror as a collective nightmare releasing out frustration with the status quo.

Roth follows slasher (and giallo) convention by having a past event motivate the mayhem. The film opens on Thanksgiving Day in the town of Plymouth, MA. Local thrift store magnate Rick Hoffman has decided to open his store at 6 p.m., leading to a riot that kills several people, including the manager’s wife (Gina Gershon), and permanently benches college pitching star Jalen Thomas Brooks. A year later, somebody dressed as John Carver, first governor of the Massachusetts colony, is going after those involved in the riot, including Hoffman’s daughter (Nell Verlaque, or “get me a Taissa Farmiga type”) and the friends she snuck into the store before the official opening.

There are tons of red herrings, and the specific motivation rests on information withheld until the end. But then, these films aren’t about solving the mystery, but rather about enjoying the murders. And if you can stomach the violence, these are some very enjoyable murder scenes. Beyond that, however, the film taps into modern discontents, albeit rather simplistically. The triggering event is the result of greed, Hoffman’s desire to make more money by opening his store on Thanksgiving Day (the manager even has to miss dinner with his family to avoid being fired). The murders, then, reflect our own discontent with the greed behind unchecked capitalism. That hardly makes the slasher sympathetic, even when we learn their motivation, but it does relate the killings to our own most violent impulses. And just to cement that, the killer is in a way the doppelganger of final girl Verlaque, who is also appalled at the store’s being open and feels guilty about her role in the riot. For an extra Freudian fillip, the impetus for opening the store came from daddy’s new wife, whom Verlaque resents (paging Electra), and watching the young woman get her father to go against his new wife’s wishes provides added emotional satisfaction, and can you tell I’m reading Robin Wood on the horror film right now.

THANKSGIVING probably could have done without the insipid romantic triangle involving Verlaque, Brooks, the boyfriend who ghosted her after his injury, and over-achiever new boyfriend Milo Mannhaim, mainly because they’re both too traditionally manly to deserve the more nuanced leading lady. And most of the high-school students look as if they should be planning for their college reunions. But there are some clever jokes about high-school life, creative use of the Ontario locations and a few nicely quirky details. After the killer takes out a security guard who had run from the riot, he notices the victim hadn’t had time to feed his cat. So, he stays long enough to feed it and leave the lid off its kibble box just in case nobody comes by any time soon. You can’t help feeling a special glow for a film like that.

A subjective collection of film score composers (1/4): Pino Donaggio's Italian lyrism

This article is the first of four dealing with film music composers. It will be a personal cinema journey through composers I love, with the desire to introduce you to their work and also the films they composed for. Each time I will first deal with a short biography of the composer and then I will propose some focus on films and collaborations with directors.

So, for the opening I wanted to write about Pino Donaggio.

Born in Burano, in Italy, he started a career as a singer-songwriter after classical studies and is mainly known for "Io che non vivo (senza te)". Traduced "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" it was sung by Dusty Springfield and Elvis Presley. I started to compose for cinema with Nicolas Roeg’s Don’t Look Now, which took place in Venice, where he is from. His work renders accurately Venice's magnificence aura but also its atmosphere in winter, foggy and labyrinthine (as opposed to David Lean's showing of Venice in Summertime). But more than anything, it plays a part in inscribing the film in the Giallo genre, which designates a type of film, mostly Italian, mixing thriller, horror and eroticism in their plots.

Don't Look Now, Nicolas Roeg (1973)

I discovered him through his collaboration with Brian De Palma on two films: Carrie and Blow Out.

Released in 1976, Carrie adapts to the screen Stephen King's eponymous first novel from 1974. It comes with Carrie White, a teen who is a scapegoat at her high school. A day after a gym class, she discovers she is bleeding: her mother, a religious extremist, never told her about it. She is mocked by her classmates, who humiliate her violently. From then, a series of events follows, Carrie slowly discovering she has telekinesis powers. But De Palma's treatment of King's novel is rather more focused on Carrie's tragedy of existence than horror. Therefore Pino Donaggio's theme for the opening credits - which is also Carrie's theme, is delicate and smooth, as the camera goes through a cloakroom in slow motion. The prom scene is the very climax of the film. The music "Bucket of Blood" accompanies the suspense, a very Hitchcockian notion: the spectator sees the bucket on a joist and Carrie's joy, waiting for the moment it will be reversed. The scene image is in slow motion until what had to happen happens. This deed triggers Carrie's anger and her telekinetic powers: through a split screen, we see her eyes controlling the shutting of doors and opening of the fire hoses. Inspired by Bernard Hermann's work for Hitchcock, each action is underlined by a similar use of strings as in Psycho.

Carrie, Brian de Palma (1976)

After Carrie, Donaggio collaborated with De Palma on Pulsions, Blow Out and Body Double. Blow Out, released in 1981, is in between two films marked by a new aspect in De Palma's cinematography: eroticism. It tells the story of Jack, a sound technician who, while recording sound effects in a park, witnesses an accident which, through his recording, might be an assassination. Like most of De Palma's films from the eighties, there is a strong referential. Here, it is mostly a tribute to the film Blow Up, directed by Michelangelo Antonioni in 1966. Indeed, it is almost the same plot, except that the protagonist is a photographer (among other differences). Blow Out is both a drama and a thriller, and the themes composed by Donaggio render these two tenses. The main theme resumes strings and piano to create a gentle soundtrack, suggesting Jack’s love for Sally.

Thus we can say it is an interesting collaboration, since Donaggio, through its music, really complements De Palma’s mannerist and formalist cinematography as well as self-reflective and transtextual way of making films at that time, referring to his compositions but also Bernard Herrman’s soundtracks.

Moto Guzzi V7 Stone Corsa

An emblem of the Italian motorcycle for almost seventy years, Moto Guzzi V7 continues to reinvent itself, maintaining its unmistakable features and an authenticity that make it unique. The most recent interpretation of the legendary V7, the new Moto Guzzi V7 Stone Corsa, was unveiled as a surprise during Moto Guzzi Open House 2023, capturing the attention of the thousands of fans who turned out in Mandello for the most eagerly awaited event by Guzzisti all over the world. Moto Guzzi V7 Stone Corsa represents a bold return to a classic sportiness. Its soft lines stand out straight away, flowing from the top fairing and the single-seater style saddle, both bringing to mind the exciting atmosphere of races from days gone by.

Vibrations that emanate from authentic motorcycling, animated by genuine passion, and which have come back to life since 2019 in the Moto Guzzi Fast Endurance, the single-brand trophy that gives many riders the chance to race on the track, having fun astride their own V7 machines, highlighting its unexpected racing features. The new V7 Stone Corsa stands out with its brand new two-tone livery, also a tribute to the golden age of motorcycle racing. The metallic grey colour scheme is livened up by an aggressive red stripe that runs vertically along the top fairing, then continuing along the lower part of the fuel tank and on the side panels. Colour coded to match the body, the hard cover for the rear portion of the saddle is available as an accessory, making it a true single-seater in pure racing style.

The equipment package also includes “bar end” rear-view mirrors, which give the V7 Stone Corsa an even sleeker and more dynamic profile, as well as the billet black anodised aluminium fuel cap. In line with the minimalist look, which is the distinctive trait of all V7 versions, the front fork has no bellows, whereas a plate on the handlebar riser identifies the special edition.

Moto Guzzi V7 Stone was also unveiled at Open House 2023 in the new Verde Camo colour scheme, which will be available alongside the Rosso Rovente, Grigio Alluminio, Giallo Metallico, and Nero Ruvido colour schemes.
