Ignore the fact that I used some of my Pop! figures for platforms in the back row, but here's a collection update on my Monster High G3 dolls! I plan to make a post sharing all my other MH dolls (mostly G1), but it's just easier to take out my G3 dolls. I got Spectra last week, and she is indeed lovely. However, my favorites are Frankie, Lagoona, Ghoulia, Twyla, Abbey, and Catty! There is no doll here that I absolutely hate, and as you can see, I did a bit of painting work and stuff with the Boo Crew. More touchups will be added soon, and no, I'm not getting the Hiss-fits 3-pack despite my goal of only getting core/debut character dolls (maybe some other time if the Twins are sold as a 2-pack in the future).

Below are some group shots of the dolls, and I had fun with some of the posing! I've also restyled Clawdeen and Draculaura's hair since taking these.

Some stuff I did for each doll! More work will be done later, and I'll post them all updated!

Clawdeen: restyled her hair, repainted her nose (since part of it was missing the paint)

Draculaura: restyled her hair (put some of it up on two upper ponytails), put pins on her headband

Cleo: painted her molded-on bandages, cut her sleeves and restitched her dress, washed hair (since it's poly), put pins on headband, made bracelet for right arm

Deuce: painted the eyes on his snakes

Lagoona: painted an eyebrow scar to hide a paint defect, painted her arm fins blue to match her leg fins, washed and curled hair

Toralei: cut her hair to about waist length, gave modified Draculaura leggings, painted freckles on her cheek

Ghoulia: repainted a Frankie tie pin and stitched it to her beanie

Twyla: made black leggings, washed and curled hair

Clawd: pulled and styled hair into a man-bun (divide into two sections, tie the back section then twist parts the front section and tie with the back part)

Abbey: washed hair, restyled front fringe to better show off her ears

Heath: swapped out sandals with Ken doll shoes

Venus: painted silver dot for nose earring

Catty: brushed hair

Spectra: washed hair, put pins on headband (I wish it was a full band)

Also, everyone's fingernails (except for Spectra) are painted.

lagoona ,frankie and abbey make the absolute worst smoothies together and everyone thinks they are disgusting except them

the group bring frankie flowers often bc they havent really seen that many and they always keep ONE and dry it , they have a herbarium (google it its cool i made one for school once please it makes sense)

lagoona has stickers on EVERYTHING, laptops, waterbottles, desk, walls, books and notebooks

she gets a stickerprinter once as a groupgifts for her bd and is overjoyed

NO BUT LITREALY lumity is legitmently such an utter mess the more i think abt it that it lowky reminds me of catradora in a way(but not as bad) i would far rather they have willow and luz be end game, im not even a willow fan but its less insulting then luz instantly dating a girl who bullied her friend for years

Oh yeah she was definitely implied to be Aboriginal, Aboriginal or Māori due to the tattoos on her dad, granted she would be biracial Indigenous & white due to her mom(her mom is a water nymph so greek) its weird to me how ppl keep insisting she was just a white girl in g1 cus of dumb reasons like her being blonde, having green eyes & “light skin”(shes just blue😭) when its obv she’s not , some ppl argue shes still implied Indigenous in g3 which while yes true Indigenous latines & Aboriginal/Māori folk arent the same and acting as if any representation of an Indigenous person is representive of all Indigenous cultures is weird af 😐 (also yeah your spot on about Brazilians-as a Brazilian myself its so frustrating how there is little to no representation for us likely due to us not speaking spanish, i was actually excited at first for lagoona being latina now cus the creature from the black lagoon is specifically located in the amazon which is in Brazil but turns out she wasnt)

My friend did note that both the mummy & the frankenstein monster in the classic universal films were played by the same actor which i think is a cute detail about clankie but i just overall cant say im a fan of it or at least how its tackled (the fans make the pairing even less enjoyable their so damn insufferable)

Yeah i agree about nefera shes such a nothing character now, it feels like they wanted to do helga & olga but didnt get why that one worked so well, the whole point of clawdeens siblings vs cleos sister was to show the differences between a healthy relationship between siblings vs a toxic one i mean hell clawdeen even had a big sister like cleo

Honestly g3 cleos voice is so damn funny to me cus its litrealy just amanitas voice😂

G3 toralei is so weird cus they obv wanted her to be punk w her first doll but were too scared to actually go there so instead they went more 80s glam and rave which just dont rlly work for toralei, i mean her band is litrealy called hissfits a pun on missfits a punk band yet like you said she just sings pop-rock songs, g1 toralei was definitely punk the only character & doll in g3 id say are actually punk is venus & welcome comittee frankie which is weird cus g3 frankie is supposed to be “DIY punk” yet they only ever dress in prepy fashion , g1s punk characters were based on a more toned down verison of punk yeah but they were still punk regardless

Tbh im canadian too n i dont rlly mind ghoulia being canadian not being mentioned much-mainly cus idk what they couls do to mention it 🤷🏽‍♂️ i also dont think a voice actor needs to perfectly match the characters appearance unless the character is disabled or has an accent cus we wont see them but also cus i care way more abt how they eruased her being autistic coded & had her speak, yes she “technically” spoke in g1 but not only are not all languages verbal ones(such as ASL) but also to the audience she was mute , alot of nonverbal autistic ppl noted that they communicate in a similar way she does besides she displayed other autistic traits like hating change , needing a schudule, having a special interest , struggling to express herself etc, only to now have all of that gone in g3 not to mention even her implied physical disability is removed in g3, she doesnt have a hunch n moves just like everyone else does most we get is “oh she needs a skateboard to move around better” which is such a dumb way to represent a mobility aid - i do fully understand foxford & bunny tho , i do think they should have done a better job at estiblishing them ceing icelandic n welsh at least give them an accent, but for bunny her having an actor w down syndrome is extremely important, down syndrome does effect someones speech pattern its important to make sure her voice actor has the same speech pattern as a neurotypical/able bodied person cant do that, granted i also am just in general burnt out on wereanimals in MH 😅 thats all we get now n its so damn lazy n boring, i would far rather if they picked an entirely different welsh folklore monster for bunny n made foxford something like idk a kitsune(just as an example) just anything but a wereanimal

Monster high G3 rant

Watching the TV series and I’m kind of disappointed.

This will be my second watch of season 1, I’m rewatching after the current season 2 episodes.

the show feels very flat in my opinion. They’ve given the characters a lot of cool traits, but they’re used for like one episode and then never brought up, or they only use one specific trait 24/7. Like Frankie in this generation, they have the ability to electrocute, extend their body parts, and they get visions from the people they’re made out of. Specifically they get visions from this one recurring doctor/ scientist. The idea is cool, but the vision literally is there to give exposition about something conveniently. Like when they are trying to solve the puzzle of clawdeens mom, Frankie’s vision just conveniently tells them what to do and how to do it.

In that same episode, we see manny taur. A Minotaur character. And right away we are just told that he’s good at puzzle solving, and so is draculaura! They’re rivals! But this is the first time I’ve ever seen or heard about draculaura being into puzzles, let alone her one sided rivalry with manny. And as the episode ends, she’s like “well you can be the rightful puzzle master” but it feels so flat. There has been no build up to this moment.

Another example is lagoona. In her designated episode, she is rooting for torelai to win the fear-leading captain over draculaura (another thing that has no build up as to why it’s important to her) lagoona explains that torelai is holding a secret over her head, and if it gets out she will lose her status as the fiercest monster in school. But this is the first time we have heard this!! In previous episodes there’s no mention of her being scary or fierce. Or even her super fast swimming skills. It’s just brought up and glosses over with a “be who you are, it’s okay to like what you want! We all have secrets 🥹” but there’s no real character development.

My last example will be the way draculaura is presented in this series. From what she tells us, she has high standards to live up to as a vampire. She needs to look good for her day so she studies endlessly and is striving for perfection. But she also has a love for witchcraft, which is banned in monster high due to its connections to humans. This can be a cute premise, but they NEVER show draculaura compared to any other vampire to show how she’s supposed to act. They never give us episodes where she blows off her friend’s shenanigans because it makes her look bad, and they never really show her dad being so overbearing. They don’t show us WHY humans are hated. And even though witchcraft is banned, whenever anyone finds out about it they’re just cool with it? No push back or anything. The only character to challenge draculaura was torelai.

This all may be very nitpicky, but MH is a character driven franchise. Character relationships with each other and their surroundings are very important to me. I want to feel the so called pressure these characters are being put under. It doesn’t have to be ultra serious 24/7, but issues get resolved within one episode and then rehashed a few episodes later with no further development. Especially with characters like Cleo and lagoona. They have been benched as side characters in this show, and side characters get much worse treatment.

‘The general episode progression is like this - introduce an issue, introduce a high stakes situation that involves the school, have all or one of the main 3 engage in a sequence of fights against this issue(or rapid solving of said issue through convince) - issue is resolved and lesson is told to viewers-characters reset for the next episode.

I know this is a children’s show, but that doesn’t mean it needs to have bad writing, not all kids are high off cocomelon. Kids deserve good writing in their media!

My next rant will be about clawdeen and her story this generation

Monster High doll collecting Questionnaire - answered

Finally had time to take photos for this thing. Hope it’s worth the wait!

1) Introduce yourself and tell us how long you’ve been collecting Monster High dolls! Hey y’all! My name’s Tori and I’ve been collecting Monster High since I think...either the end of 2014 or early 2015. Before S5 of the webisodes aired. 

2) How many MH dolls do you have?

Can I just say “a lot” and leave it at that? I kid I kid. I have like 27 Monster High dolls. That may not seem like a lot but I swear I just had 13 like four dolls ago...fingers crossed I didn’t forget to count anyone. That’s a sign of too many dolls :’D I also have two vinyl MH figures (Frankie and Draculaura) and a Rock Candy Draculaura figure.

3) Is Monster High your favorite doll line? Why or why not? Yes. Yes it is. Forever and ever. Took me a little while to realize it but as I accumulated dolls I realized most of my passion for collecting (as well as creative inspiration) revolved almost entirely around Monster High. That line is perfect for me in every way: tied to/inspired by classic Monsters, bold and edgy gothic fashion, a unique art style...I can’t tell you how much I’ve evolved as a creative individual since embracing my love of Monster High.

4) Who’s your favorite MH ghoul? 

I wish Cupid had stuck around in MH a little longer. I would’ve loved an elaborate dress (and makeup) for her!

5) Favorite Manster? My favorite Manster is actually Andy Beast from Skull Shores. Since he never reappeared in more than background shots and Mattel never produced a doll of him I’ll go with this guy:

6) Do you own any dolls of your favorite ghoul and/or manster? How many? I own one Deuce doll, his Boo York doll. He came with Cleo and I love Boo York Cleo so I had to get both. I actually hate how the writing team handled Deuce and their relationship in the movie: as far as I’m concerned it isn’t canon. (He fell so far from Ghouls Rule! Definitely the best part of that movie including his friendship with Frankie.)

7) Do you own any playsets? If so which one(s)? If not, is there a reason?

I found this at a thrift store. It didn’t have any accessories though. Still, I’m glad I own it <3 Considering I photograph Draculaura more than any of my other dolls.  I do wish I had another playset--either the catacombs or the Deadlux high school: they’d make such great backdrops for photography! Sadly I have no space.

8) Of the original main ghouls (including Ghoulia, Spectra and Abbey) which is your favorite? Got any dolls of them?

TA~DA! I’d actually also love to add Ghouls Rule Frankie to my collection but she’s not an immediate must-have.

9) Favorite character with only one doll release?

I know there were technically two but they’re essentially the same doll so it doesn’t count.

10) Character with too many dolls (in your opinion?) Uh...Toralei honestly. I don’t like her, I’ve never liked her but she pops up a lot more than I expected. Is this so there’s a matching bully in some of these sets or is she that popular and I’m the odd one out?

11) Any character you would’ve liked to see in a doll line that didn’t make it? (i.e. Lagoona in Sweet Screams or Draculaura in Power Ghouls, etc) Apart from another C.A. Cupid doll in like Dawn of the Dance or Dot Dead Gorgeous (can you imagine??) I would’ve loved to see Draculaura in Freak du Chic. I’m aware she had a Scarnival doll but that’s not the same thing. I want a doll with a similar design to her circus mini. I also think adding Lagoona to the “Scarily Ever After” line would’ve been neat (a la Little Mermaid, of course.) I know we saw her as a Mermaid in Great Scarier Reef” but I would’ve loved to see one with a fairytale twist.

Also more Sweet Screams dolls. Best line ever <3

12) Any ideas you would’ve liked to see in a doll line? An eighties glam-rock n roll band stylized after Jem and the Holograms but with a gothic edge. I’m not talking Fierce Rockers, I mean all of the core ghouls (with Ghoulia as like the manager) along with a better-designed Clawdeen. I didn’t mind what we got but she wasn’t “outrageous” enough for me. 

Also a “vintage-themed” line as an homage to the ghouls’ famous parents (including Operetta.)

13) Is there a “grail” MH doll for you? If so do you own it? I feel like my grail dolls keep changing. For a long time it was Collector Draculaura, then OG draculaura, then Dawn of the Dance Draculaura...then Ghouls Rule Frankie and the whole Sweet Screams crew. I guess I can’t make up my mind ^^; Truthfully I have most of these now so I’m pretty content with my collection. I still want a couple older dolls (CLAWDEEN and maybe OG Lagoona) as I’ve said and I must have all the Sweet Screams dolls. Beyond that I’m good. 

14) Thoughts on the cancelled Ever After High crossover? Okay so I will be forever annoyed Mattel didn’t wait to reboot everything until after the crossover. That said what I saw in the storyboards and posts floating around didn’t really impress me. There’s so much potential here and I feel like Mattel took the easiest route possible with it. If you’re going to crossover these two lines a) go ALL out with the designs and b) INVOLVE C.A. CUPID. Plus we’ll never know now if Astra Nova is the blue fairy/her daughter.

15) Thoughts on the 2016 reboot faces?

With Vampirina and now Super Monsters you really should’ve stuck with your older audience. Or saved the “Monster Family” line exclusively for said younger audience and just scaled down the original line to remind your older crowd, collectors included, why we love this line. 

Heck, at this point I’d be happy with detailed collector-only lines released on like Amazon. A limited line is better than no Monster High at all, especially if it’s highly detailed and exceptionally spooky.

16) Thoughts on the 2016 “Monster Family” line?

So I like the idea behind this line but loathe the articulation. I held off buying Alivia and Kelpie for a long time because I hoped for better quality with later releases. Whoops. All of this said there was potential here to attract a younger crowd exclusively with a brighter and less-articulated family line. Siblings or not they could’ve avoided directly crossing over by merely mentioning the OG ghouls, instead focusing on friendships and relationships with their parents. That’s what I’d have done at least.

17) How bout the SDCC exclusives? What was your favorite? Do you own any? No and I wish I did ;-; While I wasn’t as impressed with them as the Ever After High exclusives I would’ve loved a Hexiciah doll. He’s actually my favorite “manster.” (Heck! You could’ve incorporated him into the crossover, being as he’s half fairy!) I should check ebay...

18) How about Amazon exclusives? I have two! The amazing and unique Draculaura who as far as I’m concerned is the best MH doll ever released and Zomby Gaga. The others never impressed me or lived up to the same quality promised in the first exclusive. I just couldn’t pass up a Lady Gaga monster!

19) Favorite Frankie Stein doll?

Aaah this is tough. All the Frankies I own are my favorite ^^; Sweet Screams, Freaky Fusion, her classroom doll I turned into a fearleading one, and while I don’t own her original doll (mine is the 2014 release) I love that one two. I also like Wave 2 Frankie and as I said Ghouls Rule. (Honestly though I thiiiiink Sweet Screams is number one...which is funny because I did not want her when I first started collecting. For whatever reason I thought I’d be happy with one doll of each character. Again I say: whoops)

21) Favorite Clawdeen Wolf doll? Freak du Chic, her OG doll and I think Boo York. I’m so mad her outfit isn’t more stylish. Sometimes I wonder if it’s worth it to buy her and like one of her fashion packs...but that’s actually more expensive on Amazon than her original doll!

Originally Dawn of the Dance wasn’t a favorite but now that I own the doll I realize just how much she stands out (why wasn’t purple lipstick used more often???)

23) Favorite Lagoona Blue doll? Skull Shores, her OG doll and I think Dawn of the Dance. I’m not a big fan of the mohawk but I appreciate the detail in her outfit...plus I love blue makeup.

 I also like Sweet Screams (although she’s my least favorite of the line) and Dawn of the Dance. Honestly maybe I should’ve set my sights on that whole line XD Except I’m not the biggest fan of the Clawdeen and Frankie.

36) Is Monster High the only doll line you collect? Why or why not? Sort of? It’s the only line I primarily collect now. I keep my eye on a couple others in case something catches my eye but like I said I’m low on space.  Some of my other collections include: Ever After High (complete with maybe the exception of TriCastleon Lizzie Hearts one day) Super Heroes (this also includes high quality collectibles. One day I’d like Mystique but she’s only available on ebay and out of my price range right now. Plus I’ve found the production condition of each varies...) Disney Princesses/Frozen (sometimes I tell myself I should get Mulan for varying reasons but I’ve only taken photos of my Elsa doll so what does that tell you) Vampirina + Hotel Transylvania (This includes toys as well. HT seems to have wrapped up for the time being and as I’ve stated numerous times I’m fickle with Vampirina merchandise. Nonetheless both of these are technically ongoing) Equestria Girls (Done unless Hasbro releases a new Adagio Dazzle doll. Also fashion packs or  a dAYDREAM SHIMMER DOLL COME ON--ahem-- I’m still planning to get rid of most of my older dolls.) I tried getting into Disney’s “Attractionistas” but only acquired two before they stopped selling in the parks. To be honest the quality dropped anyway and they’ve only got basic articulation. I’m not sure I’m going to keep the ones I have...we’ll see.

37) Do you still collect Monster High dolls? (i.e. scour the internet and/or secondhand stores?) Technically? I got three for Christmas and still poke my head in thrift stores now and then. For the most part though I’m essentially finished, I only say I keep going because there are a few older dolls I will definitely have someday.

38) There’s a lot of new Monster doll/toy lines out now: thoughts if any? H’okay so here’s the Earth--

I make it a point to investigate new Monster lines: monsters are my life, nothing gives me greater creative fuel so it is my duty!

Right now there are technically three others out there although like I said, Hotel Transylvania seems to be out of stores. Don’t know if it’s still available on Amazon. The other two are Vampirina and Super Monsters. I’ve talked about them before--they’re largely for a much younger crowd, even younger than the MH reboot audience but there are some highlights for us older collectors if you love monsters as much as I do. I’m a big fan of world building and the spooky aesthetic: I love seeing how different franchises approach this. Character designs too: it can be a little tricky in the “family friendly monster” genre: a successful one balances spooky with well...friendly. I think Vampirina is most successful in this department. Super Monsters leans more towards the cutesy side.  That said, I actually prefer their world set up over Vampirina. As well as the approach to being a monster which isn’t surprising since Vampirina is essentially one giant whimsical metaphor. 

Super Monsters has only just joined the merchandise department which I know I’ve said before. I look forward to seeing how it evolves. Vampirina too: most of the toys, while cute, are more “toy” than doll and I’m not a big fan of gimmicks so I haven’t bought any of the singing dolls. Fingers crossed we get something a little more...elaborate? Even if it’s just a limited release (I do love the one figure/doll I have though! Best of the merchandise released so far <3)

Going back quickly to Hotel Transylvania...I maintain Jazware’s wasn’t the best choice of manufacturer. So many little things that needed a touch more thought. Although I will give them points for clothing quality and faceup!

39) And finally, what’s your favorite thing about Monster High? Can be past or present!

I think I’ve covered why I love it throughout this questionnaire: Monster High inspires me. It came into the world fresh and with a lot of creative power behind it. It turned so many heads and shook up the doll world as we know it. It brought monsters back into the light and that’s never gone away. If anything it’s blown up even more: that may not have happened without Monster High. Was the writing great? No. But the theme songs, the designs and especially the original lessons taught stood out on their own: Be yourself. Be unique. Be a monster.

Monster High Electrified!: Review

The digital version of Electrified was released this week so you know what that means! it’s review time!

Massive Spoilers and in depth analysis under the cut! This is our second movie into the reboot friends, I will not be as lenient as I was in my review of Welcome to Monster High. And as of writing this we do not know if we are getting a fall movie so I expect Mattel to have their stuff together by this stage in the game.

Ready? Steady? GO!

5 second in...I’m annoyed That has got to be some kind of record. Draculaura starts off by summarizing WTMH which I’m fine with - the part I take issue with is her opening statements.

“I’m Draculaura! and I’m a monster! but don’t be afraid! we’re not what you think! we’re nice and normal and weird too!”

...This sentence right here is exactly the type of watering down of the Monster High franchise that pre-boot Monster high fans feared from the very beginning. Monster Highs original mission statement was “be Yourself! Be Unique! be a Monster!” love and accept those around you despite their flaws and differences. Draculauras statements here are more along the lines of “don’t be scared of us because we are exactly like you” - which depending on how you look at it could be really profound or really sad. I’m choosing to look at it from the sad perspective because it erases the need to love and understand those different from yourself. But at the same time I understand the messages “we’re all the same!” - which sounds profound on paper, but I feel like it can be easily misinterpreted as “what if they’re nothing like me? then can I be afraid of them?” I feel like the reboot so far has muddied the message it wants to share with Monster High... You can be normal or you can be weird- but you can’t be both but darn it is Mattel isn’t trying to have it both ways. Weird by definition isn’t normal.

HA! hahhahaa! This dude tried to catch a running wolf with his bare hands, no ropes or chains or a cage he’s just gonna reach and grunt. What was he expecting? was he just gonna pick up a fully grown apex predator by the scruff and just tote her back to the rest of the mob? hahahahaah!!!!

Our first real look at Silvi and I’m still kind of underwhelmed by her design TBH. grey skin, blue eyes, blue hair- I can’t think of any character we’ve had like that before. They could have gone all out and made her really wolfy! dark grey with patterns! But the went the safest most boring route they could have with her and it shows. We’ve had 5 new characters released since the reboot and all of them have had either familiar color schemes or boring color schemes.

These are the flesh colors of the 5 new characters we’ve gotten since the reboot began.

I would have also included their webisode colors as well as their 3-D movie colors, but Zomby Gaga and Dayna do not have 3-D counterparts and none of them but Ari have webisode counterparts because what are webisodes? sounds like a made up concept.

I am bored with this color pallet. The first five Monster High girls in the pre-boot gave us browns, pinks, blues, greens. So far the reboot has given us- grey and more grey and grey with shimmer and purple grey - TECHNICALLY Ari is white but they gave her a pink shimmer so I’m counting her as the pink grey. Dayna is the only one who stands out as GOLD which computers have a hard time translating metallics but she stands out against the other ghouls. I am over this pastel color muted with grey skin tone thing Mattel is doing with these new ghouls, I’m ready for some dark colors, I’m ready for some earth tones, I’m ready for some neon. Treesa Thornwillow cannot get here soon enough but even she has her own problems (like this bizarre brown skin/pink hair combo Mattel has been doing with her, Ginger Breadhouse and Howleen but that’s another rant entirely)... Silvi is cute...but what else?

Okay, Sorry I had to get that out- back to the movie.

The ghouls doing their best Charlies Angels / Ginyu force impersonation.

Clawdeens brilliant plan was to distract the normies who are looking for a wolf- by turning into another wolf and then returning to that same location... I wonder why that plan didn’t work.

Frankie being a super genius wouldn’t bother me so much if they didn’t take Ghoulia’s main character trait away from her and then demote Frankie to second banana. Are you smart? you like science? guess what! we’re giving your main character status to the cute pink frilly one, sorry for your luck Frankie.

Also: man that Mad Science class sure is missing- a teacher. if only they would hire more staff besides Dracula and Clawdeens Mom.

Lines like this are why I love Moanica D’kay. she’s not nice but she’s not wrong.

This is the new foyer? it’s so...bright, cheerful and average looking.

Twyla being visibly uncomfortable while being adopted by extroverts is the best part of the movie so far.

Ari why aren’t you in class? or at Lunch? do you just give daily concerts instead of having lunch? do ghosts not need to eat in this universe?

These dorks are starting a band...I can’t wait to see where this goes.

I need more into on that Metallic green fishboy and the confused brown werecat boy stat.

I’m very happy to see the reboot animators have a solid handle on Venus’s teeth... her previous iterations never had any consistency they always fluctuated from incorrect (Venus’s coffin bean art and her weird upper tusk teeth) or just not there. (most of her webisode appearances just omitted her teeth whenever her mouth was open) or just gave her normal teeth like everyone else (her 3-D appearances)  The red blush on her green cheeks is a weird color choice: I think in an attempt to make the ghouls look more cute Mattel is giving everybody red or pink blush- Frankie, Rochelle & Abbey all have it in their dolls and it stands out so much against their multi colored flesh in a bad way, Blush is supposed to be blood showing up though your flesh & if Venus is a plant creature her blood should be green: so in theory her blush should also be green just maybe a darker shade.

I am 100% here for Moanica to get a Spanish bad ghoul theme song while she causes trouble... I was gonna bust them earlier for the dramatic Spanish guitar music sting when she appeared but upon reflection I would rather have Mattel pound in that she is Puerto Rican to the point of redundancy than to have it left vague enough for people to go “she’s not REALLY Hispanic- she just speaks Spanish...not every person who speaks Spanish is Hispanic!” Because if you followed me throughout my black history month postings you will know we do have fans that are in some kind of next level denial when it comes to any character who isn’t overtly white... so go a head Mattel - pound it IN.

Metallic fish boy needs glasses to read! I love him. But isn’t he like the third or forth sea manster we’ve had with a fin mohawk? it’s a cute hair style Mattel but you’re milking it why no spiky urchin hair? or eel gorgon? or sea anemone dreads? there are SO many options you could have for sea boy hair styles! but y’all are married to this fin mohawk thing.

At least this backgrounder fishboy is a unique color and not blue/teal. though green is kind of Deuces thing.

I take issue with Clawdeen’s big dream changing from running her own fashion designing empire - to opening a salon. Not only did it take all the power away from her- making stylish clothing vs. waiting on humans hand and foot. I feel like it’s just a bit stereotypical that the one main canonically black character we have wants to open a beauty salon...and yes I realize that just about every doll franchise has a salon line... but did it have to be Clawdeen? I feel like whoever is in charge of handling Clawdeen in the reboot needs to watch more Shark Tank and watch less Barber Shop. How did we go from Clawdeens Fashion Entrepreneur's Club fashion pack & her Moanatella Ghostier fashion designer internship - yaknow the entire plot of Scaris: the city of frights...to “I wanna open a salon!” how did we fall so far??? Maybe I’m reading too far into it but this rubs me the wrong way & usually if something skeeves you out it’s for a good reason.

I also wanna add that she states her reason for wanting to design in the first place is because she lived in a “dark dingy den with no style or art” - then why is her mother teaching art at this school!? How does Clawdeen already know how to draw!? If Clawdeen had no exposure to art and fashion before she transferred to Monster high then shouldn’t she be new to all of this? is her mom even qualified to teach art at a school if she didn’t allow it in her home? This plot point has so many holes in it.

“My family built the pyramids!”... Cleo, somebody lied to you...I guess it’s not PC to say tens of thousands of Hebrew slaves built the pyramids despite the fact that's taught in 4th grade history. Because of this scene I’m giving everyone homework tonight- go watch The Prince of Egypt.

“Being creative is hard, You have to open up your heart and show it to all the world!...painful, yes. But joyful too! I believe in you! you just need to believe in you too! You can’t rush great art!”

As a creative person, knowing this movie was made by other creative persons I have to say that this is excellent advice and sounds very much to me like this voice of experience. Listen to Mama wolf gang! her words are wise ones!

It is really distracting that Clawdeen has like 500 eyelashes but Harriet only has one... That aside- this moment between them was very cute and well done. More Monster Parent interactions please!

I thought the entire purpose of getting Twyla to spy on the Zomboys was to find out stuff no one else could due to her shadow walker ability - but here she is taking  a picture of them in the foyer out in public where everyone is and can see, they’re not exactly being discreet hauling a wheel barrow though the building in the middle of the day.

Frankie Ex Machina. I was going to bust this scene for not being like the graphic novel but it was exactly like the graphic novel. Finally some consistency Mattel! I am impressed!

Oh look! it’s Gob! being fat and greedy again... dog nabbit when will I be free from him!? I don’t care if he’s just doing it because Twyla asked him too. We all know he’s gonna eat the treats anyways because that’s what he is, a one dimensional fat joke and I can’t stand him! he’s even worse in this movie because he always has food floating around in his fat naked body....side note: why is he naked!?

Am I supposed to believe that a couple of undead teenage boys built this intricate tunnel system underground over the course of a couple of days?  I am?...okay, moving on.

.... Oh come ON.

At what point are they crossing the line of “lil bros helping out!” to exploiting child labor...

Those dresses are boring as heck Clawdeen, I expect better from you. But I guess they’re not bad for someone whose never been exposed to art despite having a mother who teaches it.

That is less boring- but now Clawdeen can’t take full credit for the design! best case scenario Frankie is her collaborator worst case scenario she is stealing credit for Frankies patterns...See how many problems you create when you make Clawdeen a salon owner instead of a fashion designer?

So not only can Frankie’s electricity put cute glowing patterns on dresses and NOT fry them, she can also create sentient life? Whoever wrote this script clearly went to the Disney school of how magical powers work.

Pour one out for this cute Lagoona we’re never going to get a doll of, Pour another one out for a DJ gig tore away from Holt, Elle, Operetta - literally anyone else who is musically inclined but Lagoona...just pour the whole bottle out.

Clawdeen is heart broken that Frankie isn’t at her salons big opening night....but why? she JUST met Frankie in the previous movie and shouldn’t be this attached to someone she barely knows. it’s not like they’ve been friends for months/years and have had time to establish a bond like they did in the pre-boot.

How many times do we have to watch Frankie get electrocuted to death Mattel? how many!?

Oh! so Venus and Silvi get electrified outfits too - that look exactly like the dresses Clawdeen designed except they weren’t made by Clawdeen they were shocked into being from Frankies power source....so....what I’m getting from this is that these outfits and unique styles exist with or without Clawdeens creative input...That’s a depressing prospect Mattel.

Hang on a second- Venus has an electrified doll... But that isn’t the outfit we see here.

Did...Did they just re-color her basic outfit in the movie with neon instead of putting her in her actual Electrified outfit her doll wears!? That is a new level of lazy I’ve never seen before in any of the movies. I’ve complained when they’ve made cool outfits for dolls that we don’t get in the movies (Moanicas dance the fright away look in WTMH) and I’ve complained when we get cool movie outfits that never get a doll ( literally every movie but biggest offenders are manta ray Gil from great scarrier reef & roller maze Cleo)- but re-coloring Venus’s basic outfit when she has a doll for this line is new and lazy and I am just flabbergasted by this.

“Hey! where’s my electric outfit!?”

Raythe asking the hard hitting question that we all wanna know the answer to. why didn’t he get an electric outfit!? so far he’s had more of an impact on the movie than Silvi and she not only got an outfit she got a doll too. Raythe got robbed in this movie.His signature outfit is already very boring- they couldn’t have at the very least gave him an Electrified debut doll outfit to make up for it? That’s messed up Mattel, what did this poor kid ever do to deserve this kind of neglect?

Moanica...this is a bad plan. The Normies are already afraid of monsters is the plan to scare them more? what are you going to do during the day time? What about the one who aren’t afraid of the dark? What about back up generators? It being dark isn’t going to stop one of them from just hauling off and punching one of your cronies in the face. this plan has so many holes in it.

and why are her eyes still blue!? her dolls eyes are green- fix it Mattel.

I knew they wanted them to be a couple when they went to grom (prom) together, but when they specifically made their dance a TANGO, a dance that is supposed to be ROMANTIC and SEDUCTIVE, after they hated each other, I was lie "yeah you're trying to make a new ship without actually putting effort into it".

Lagoona was literally described as spicy in her song, like in 3 different ways. And it's sus that when she was Australian she was sweet and gentle, and while she could be more passionate she wasn't violent and she never described herself as spicy or having a temper

Lagoona was also heavily implied to be Aboriginal. Latinos, sorry, but they have representation overall. In most modern media there will be a Latino who isn't just the "Tequila drinking, sombrero wearing mafioso named Carlos or Juan or Diego" or the "sexy attractive bombshell named Maria Teresa Jimena de los Santos" or some dumb thing like that (except Brazilians they only get portrayed as samba girls that American men go to Brazil to gawk at and make kinky remarks towards but that's another story). Name more than two Aboriginal characters in any media if you even KNOW ANY. You can't. You would think that with indigenous issues being big things in both North America and Australia, you wouldn't STRIP AN INDIGENOUS CHARACTER OF THEIR IDENTITY. Right? It wasn't canon but they could have made it canon! Think of the Aboriginal Australians who probably are begging to get roles in movies and TV. I literally have seen Aboriginal fans talk about how she reminded them of their lives and meant a lot to them. They were completely neglected. And worse, one Latina I interacted with on Reddit literally all but admitted she was racist towards Aboriginal people. She basically said "but Latinos don't get a lot of rep and it's not canon! What about us?".

Clankie doesn't work. Cleo was firstly already taken, but ignoring that she and Deuce were paired togther because of the Egyptian-Greek thing.

Nefera being good now... it's not a big deal but I think the sisterly dilemma was a big part of both of their characters. Not all family members get along and showing that is completely ok.

Cleo's voice is the worst. I can see her as an influencer, but why is she a VALLEY GIRL?

Fans call Toralei a punk. She's not. She doesn't wear punk clothing she just has a studded jacket. Her music is pop-rock not PUNK. Listen to her song Cool Cat, it's amazing but not even close to punk. If she was really punk she would look and sing more like the likes of the Clash, the Ramones, Green Day, or even edgier rock bands like the Stones, Nirvana, the Who, or Led Zeppelin. G1 Tora and the twins looked ironically way more punk, and G1 and G2 already had actual punk inspired characters like Venus, Deuce, sometimes Clawdeen and Frankie, and in G2 Silvi and Moanica.

Ghoulia being Canadian for no reason. As a Canadian it hurts. They literally had a concept art with a Canadian flag, she wears a toque (beanie for Americans), and was explicitly stated to be influenced by Scott Pilgrim by one of the designers, and she definitely looks like Ramona Flowers. Despite that they don't even MENTION her being Canadian. Couldn't even get a Canadian VA for her which.... Marieve Herington and Erin Fitzgerald from G1 are Canadians. Get one of them to voice her. Similarly Mr. Foxford has an Icelandic VA but they never acknowledge the fact that he's Icelandic. Even Bunny Earickson, the newest character. Shea basically confirmed she was Welsh. She said that werebunnies had connections to Celtic/Welsh mythology but... did she get a Welsh VA? No, she got a Latina. Why did you explicitly say she was Welsh but couldn't find a Welsh VA? Do Welsh people not deserve representation? Do you know most people know nothing about Wales? That the effects pof British colonization still take a toll on Wales? That one of the earlist British invasions was of Wales where along with Ireland and Scotland they tried HARD to strip them of their culture and language and then made measly apologies in the modern day but still harm the Celtic countries through a lot of crap the Tories do and by keeping their monarchy? Welsh people always get called sheepshaggers and their language is mocked as "smashing a keyboard" (it does look like that but I understand why many Welsh people would be offended and they have the right to be)

Monster high G3 rant

Watching the TV series and I’m kind of disappointed.

This will be my second watch of season 1, I’m rewatching after the current season 2 episodes.

the show feels very flat in my opinion. They’ve given the characters a lot of cool traits, but they’re used for like one episode and then never brought up, or they only use one specific trait 24/7. Like Frankie in this generation, they have the ability to electrocute, extend their body parts, and they get visions from the people they’re made out of. Specifically they get visions from this one recurring doctor/ scientist. The idea is cool, but the vision literally is there to give exposition about something conveniently. Like when they are trying to solve the puzzle of clawdeens mom, Frankie’s vision just conveniently tells them what to do and how to do it.

In that same episode, we see manny taur. A Minotaur character. And right away we are just told that he’s good at puzzle solving, and so is draculaura! They’re rivals! But this is the first time I’ve ever seen or heard about draculaura being into puzzles, let alone her one sided rivalry with manny. And as the episode ends, she’s like “well you can be the rightful puzzle master” but it feels so flat. There has been no build up to this moment.

Another example is lagoona. In her designated episode, she is rooting for torelai to win the fear-leading captain over draculaura (another thing that has no build up as to why it’s important to her) lagoona explains that torelai is holding a secret over her head, and if it gets out she will lose her status as the fiercest monster in school. But this is the first time we have heard this!! In previous episodes there’s no mention of her being scary or fierce. Or even her super fast swimming skills. It’s just brought up and glosses over with a “be who you are, it’s okay to like what you want! We all have secrets 🥹” but there’s no real character development.

My last example will be the way draculaura is presented in this series. From what she tells us, she has high standards to live up to as a vampire. She needs to look good for her day so she studies endlessly and is striving for perfection. But she also has a love for witchcraft, which is banned in monster high due to its connections to humans. This can be a cute premise, but they NEVER show draculaura compared to any other vampire to show how she’s supposed to act. They never give us episodes where she blows off her friend’s shenanigans because it makes her look bad, and they never really show her dad being so overbearing. They don’t show us WHY humans are hated. And even though witchcraft is banned, whenever anyone finds out about it they’re just cool with it? No push back or anything. The only character to challenge draculaura was torelai.

This all may be very nitpicky, but MH is a character driven franchise. Character relationships with each other and their surroundings are very important to me. I want to feel the so called pressure these characters are being put under. It doesn’t have to be ultra serious 24/7, but issues get resolved within one episode and then rehashed a few episodes later with no further development. Especially with characters like Cleo and lagoona. They have been benched as side characters in this show, and side characters get much worse treatment.

‘The general episode progression is like this - introduce an issue, introduce a high stakes situation that involves the school, have all or one of the main 3 engage in a sequence of fights against this issue(or rapid solving of said issue through convince) - issue is resolved and lesson is told to viewers-characters reset for the next episode.

I know this is a children’s show, but that doesn’t mean it needs to have bad writing, not all kids are high off cocomelon. Kids deserve good writing in their media!
