TW: Sexism . 👁Ghoorti Nazar👁 14/14 . Last year I was invited by the Indian based @kadakcollective to participate in the Bystander Anthology. A first of its kind anthology bringing together writers, illustrators, artists and activists from South Asia under the theme of bystander, a term that holds many layered meanings in our South Asian societies and culture. . Sabika Abbas aka @boltiaurat a vibrant and incredible Indian poet and activist approached me about collaborating for the Anthology. As soon as I saw a video of her reciting her powerful and haunting poem, ‘Meri Saree’ on a street in Mumbai I knew I had to create something with this beautiful soul. . As we both wondered about what being a bystander meant to us, we both came to the conclusion that we as women have almost always been bystanders in our own cities, Karachi and Delhi. I personally have spent most of my life in Karachi and yet I feel like an anomaly here, a bystander. I have a void of a relationship with my city. Most of us women living in Pakistan feel that way. I do not feel safe here, I have been harassed, robbed, threatened and stared at. And while I blame my city, who is the real threat and culprit? Not this piece of land and sea that surrounds me but the men that live on it. It’s these men who don’t let us go out and when we do, their eyes and hands burn our skin and flesh. . I started working on this piece last year and yet this year and today it feels more relevant. My heart and all the Pakistani women’s hearts are bleeding from all the recent and past tragedies. Now there’s just a seething anger left. How many more of us will be hurt, killed and raped? Till when will we be made to feel like bystanders on our own land? Our collaboration seeks to recognize this important experience and give each other courage to keep going out, keep riding that bike, keep taking that bus, wear what you want, dream what you like and go get it. The more of us that are out there, the more they will realize we are not bystanders, we are the women of our cities. And our cities belong to us as much as we belong to them. . #bystanderanthology #kadakcollective #ghoortinazar #illustration #animation #gif https://www.instagram.com/p/CFhklp8HT_f/?igshid=qw34rvii1s2c

👁GHOORTI NAZAR👁 Part 2 Come And see what we have done To your cages Broken them Destroyed them We are now flying in search Of a new sky And you have nothing better To do than look. Look, Deep into our eyes You will see Rainbow colours Of love and freedom. Listen, To the sounds Of our feet That walk on the chest of the Streets At night, With anklets on The feet are draped in Their hard work, The exhilaration of that Night. Now understand, That we Will not be manipulated Deceived By the idea of shame dipped in Capitalism The vain parameters of Character and honour. Now, The cheeks are red (Red of revolution) Lips carry questions My feet carry chaos Now, With earthen lamps lit on the Shoulders of storm We are growing love in the Gardens of oppression We are carrying the world on Our shoulders You and, We move on And still, You cannot stop looking at us You just cannot. 👁GHOORTI NAZAR👁 Part 1 You have Locked in cages The dreams in our eyes Our heartbeats The hopes that we embodied Our moving feet You have Put behind curtains Our eyelashes holding on to Fantasies Our sense of vision That could see A new dawn And articulate hopes Or weave a tapestry of novel aspirations Novel philosophies You manipulated us Into hiding our bra straps Worrying about covering our breast You pushed us into a whirlpool of Shame and honour Fear, at every step, fear In every work, fear. You’ve tied clocks to our feet And nights slipped out from between Our fingers Like grains of sand You’ve made it difficult To take a bus Catch a drain Walk the road Talk Speak Assert Sing Question Dance Listen Cry Breathe You just cannot take your eyes off me You just cannot None of your tricks will work on me now You just cannot take your eyes off me You just cannot.
