The more I think about it, the more I suspect Arthur knew from the beginning that Lee wasn't actually in love with him. (more below!)

TW: abuse, mental illness, unrequited love

Love was the fantasy, just like the Joker persona itself.

Arthur's painful life of abuse and misery inspired the fantasy of Joker, but Lee inspired in Arthur the fantasy of being in love.

And this fantasy served an important function for our sweet Arthur: it helped him find hope and enabled him come alive again during another bleak, scary time in his life.

It's kind of like how a crush (or in our case, our undying love for Arthur!) helps us get through the day.

Love transformed Arthur. It made him able to see who he really was and reject who he wasn't.

I believe Arthur is more self-aware than many give him credit for. I personally see this awareness in the lyrics he sings from Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered:

She's a fool and don't I know it But a fool can have her charms I'm in love and don't I show it Like a babe in arms

Love's the same old sad sensation Lately I've not slept a wink Since this half-pint imitation Put me on the blink

I'm wild again, beguiled again A simpering, whimpering child again Bewitched, bothered, and bewildered am I

Lost my heart, but what of it? She is cold, I agree She can laugh and I love it Although the laugh's on me

I'll sing to her, bring spring to her And long for the day when I cling to her Bewitched, bothered, and bеwildered am I

He's saying he's in love but he knows it's not real. He knows Lee is a cold person, that she can only offer a half-pint imitation of love, that the joke's going to be on him...but he doesn't care because at the end of the day, it feels good just to love. Love brings Arthur back to himself.

Those of us who know and adore Arthur know that Arthur is obviously capable of great love.

His feelings are real. And they are powerful...even if the person he's infatuated with cannot reciprocate them genuinely.

And I would go one one step further to add that the fact that we love Arthur as much as we do means that we share his capacity for great love.

We are like Arthur in this regard...and what a wonderful thing that is!

The ability to love deeply and allow that love to transform us is one of the most incredible, meaningful qualities we have the honor of sharing with him.

Hey, I'm Ghastella! Someone asked for my writing advice & this is what I came up with:

💖 My all-time favorite book about writing is bird by bird by Anne lamott. Read it. Or don't. (See below.)

💖 Read a lot. If you don't like something you're reading, dump it. Life's too short to hate what you're reading. This includes bird by bird if you find it's not your cup of tea. Search for other people's writing that lights you up and makes you feel something in your body, whether that's making you wanna pee your pants or something that makes your heart stop. Look for the body hit.

💖 Write every day. Write the stuff you think is pointless. Write the self indulgent fic. Keep a journal and write what happened to you today. Just write something.

💖 Don't self-edit when you're just getting stuff down the first round. Save that crap for revision.

💖 If you get a journal, get one that make your blood boil.

💖 I don't care what anyone says about suffering, The better you feel in your body and mind, the more of a juicy creative you will be. So make feeling good your first priority and do whatever you need to do to make that happen first.

💖 Don't ever write to impress, seduce or win over a love interest. Or anyone. Just trust me. You're entering a world of pain, Donny.

💖 In that same vein, if you give a romantic partner prospect something you wrote and they take more than 48 hours to read it, they're not for you. Fuck that guy/girl/person. Actually, stop fucking them. Immediately.

💖 When you don't know what happens next, look inward. You already have the answers inside you. What would make you as a reader get excited and turned on by? Boop, I know you already got it, you sly kitten. Now go write that.

💖 Fuck everybody. Write the shit you wanna read.

💖 Remember: You're not telling a story, you're casting a spell on the reader.

💖 Put as much blank space (my dad calls it "air") on the page as you can manage. Trust me.
