Fitz Intermediate Computer Science Academy Showcases Student Success
Fitz Intermediate Computer Science Academy, the second computer science immersion academy in the Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD), hosted a showcase event on January 16 to celebrate student success with the new technology-infused curriculum. The event opened with a performance from Fitz students in the school’s new mariachi band, GGUSD’s first intermediate school mariachi band. Fitz students delivered speeches highlighting the new 21st century technology skills learned this school year. Fitz students demonstrated how they use coding to build websites using HTML (HyperText Markup Language) and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) computer coding language. Guests visited classrooms to see students hard at work, demonstrating their coding skills. “We are excited that Fitz students are learning high-level computer science skills that will help them succeed in high school, college, and an ever-changing, technology-driven job market,” said Board of Education Trustee Bob Harden. Just like the district’s first computer science academy at Heritage Elementary School, Fitz Computer Science Academy is powered by Code to the Future, recognized by the White House as the nation’s leader in developing computer science magnet schools. All Fitz Intermediate students are part of the Academy, learning computer programming, robotics, coding, and other computer science skills as part of daily instruction. As part of the program, Fitz students benefit from a technology coach, innovative curriculum, online resources, and will collaborate with an elite group of computer science immersion school leaders from across the nation.  Heritage and Fitz students will have the opportunity to take the Advanced Placement Computer Science exam and enter high school with a competitive advantage. Fitz Intermediate Science Immersion Academy offers a pathway for students from the Heritage Computer Science Academy to continue building on their computer science and coding skills. The skills learned in each program can be used once in career technical education courses once they transition to Los Amigos High School.

I don’t really like going on here that much because there’s literally social justice warriors everywhere. Everyone likes to feel oppressed and bitch about something.
update: my hair is purple, which is temporary because by the time I teach in a couple of years I’m going completely black.
I haven’t died; I just haven’t posted much on here. I live in stress because of the bills I have to pay. I really don’t want to get harassed, so I cough up money. My round with ggusd ended and let me tell you, I loved it. I was not the nicest “teacher” (I don’t have a college degree but the kids called me teacher hahaha o) but even then my kids still drew me pictures and gave me hugs. There were moments where I lost my shit because I am barely learning how to manage a class and even then they still liked me. Am I surprised? YES. The girl I worked with was kind of cool but part of me didn’t really like talking to her. I tried to remain professional and I really don’t have anything against her to be honest. But when I walked in with purple hair she complimented it but then said something about if whether I have ever met the superintendent and that maybe she’d say something about my hair. It was as if she secretly wanted me to get busted for putting an unnatural color on. Maybe I’m overthinking it. But I mean, Baohan said she had pink parts in her hair and literally no one told her anything. And even now I’m a grown ass adult so I wouldn’t care. Anyway, 11 out of 25 of my student showed up last week on the last day. Oops!
Today I was walking in the street with Bryan and a bird shit on him. I started crying from the laughter and fell down and he panicked. In the middle of him freaking out he was in disbelief and yelled “I wanna go home!” so we went to his house after I wiped his clothes with my cardigan and he sat on the bed all embarrassed and kept saying “I got shit on!” But I mean when I was in 4th grade a bird shit on my face, and it felt very, very warm. I thought someone threw their hot lunch at me but nope it was a bird hahahahahahahahaha. It was way too funny. We have also been watching Asian dramas now. Like we were seeing this one called 2 Fathers and then this one called The Miracle.
When I got home today my eye lashes were super clumpy and gross because I took a nap with him and it was cool cause in the middle of it he started kissing me and saying cute things but then when he woke up he was like “That’s gay!” and “I don’t know what’s up with me today I’m just feeling really lovey”. It was funny I think he felt weird cause of the bird pooop hahahahhahaha. He’s too funny I’m done

Garden Grove Takes Safety Measures to Keep Students Safe
The Board of Education took action to extend the suspension of in-person classes through Friday, May 8 with students returning on Monday, May 11.   The board also granted the superintendent authority to extend the closure without board action.
The board’s decision is in line with actions taken by other large urban school districts across the county and state and in accordance with the federal and state directive to prevent the spread of COVID-19 through social distancing.
Recently, federal, state, and county authorities have escalated national efforts to fight the spread of coronavirus. The board’s decision reflects our unwavering commitment to keep our community safe.
GGUSD will continue to provide high-quality distance learning following our regularly-scheduled spring recess April 6-10.  We have been very proud of the amazing learning taking place through virtual classrooms and digital engagements across the district. We are committed to keeping families informed and supported throughout the duration of at-home learning.  Families can find resources to support at-home learning at https://ggusd.us/covidresources.
Additionally, GGUSD will also continue to provide free meals to students through its Grab and Go meal program offered at 13 locations on Mondays and Wednesdays from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
We have received calls/emails from parents, students, and employees about the wonderful learning taking place at home, and we are so proud of our GGUSD community! Working together to support student success…that’s the Garden Grove Way!

Garden Grove Coronavirus Update
There are no cases of coronavirus in GGUSD schools.
GGUSD is in regular communication with the Orange County Health Care Agency for the most up-to-date information about coronavirus.
According to Orange County Health Care Agency, risk of infection to the public is believed to be low.
Should one of our students test positive for coronavirus, the HCA would communicate that information to our school district and discuss appropriate messaging and notifications to parents and families and conduct a close contact investigation.
The OC Health Care Agency is not recommending canceling or avoiding social outings or public events.
GGUSD has encouraged students, staff, and families to follow common-sense precautions to prevent the spread of illness including staying home if sick, frequent hand washing, avoiding contact with people who are sick, covering your cough or sneeze with a tissue, avoid touching your face with unwashed hands, and regularly cleaning frequently touched objects.
Posters from the Orange County Health Care Agency about prevention of the coronavirus have been distributed to all GGUSD schools.
GGUSD schools undergo frequent sanitization and custodial staff has received additional guidance about additional cleaning of frequently touched surfaces.
Any decision to close a school would be made in coordination with the Orange County Health Care Agency and the Orange County Department of Education.
Learn more about GGUSD and their efforts on our website!

Career & Technical Education
Academic Skills + Personal Skills = Lifelong Success
Garden Grove Unified School District offers rigorous and relevant career and technical education programs and pathways to 7-12 grade students at the intermediate and high schools and to adults in our community at Lincoln Education Center.
Career and Technical Education (CTE) in Garden Grove Unified School District is aligned with California’s CTE Model Curriculum Standards, which were revised and adopted by the State Board of Education in 2013, as well as Standards for Career Ready Practice and Common Core State Standards. Instruction follows pathways focused on preparation for post-secondary success and connects core academic content with real-world applications.
CTE course offerings include those taught by full-time single-subject-credentialed teachers holding subject- matter authorization in business, health science, home economics, or industrial and technology education, as well as courses taught by instructors holding Designated Subjects Teaching Credentials in a variety of career sectors as part of the Regional Occupational Program (ROP). Students may earn college credits in the 41 high school CTE classes with articulation agreements; moreover, 29 CTE courses meet University of California A-G subject requirements.
CTE pathways offered at GGUSD include the following sectors: Arts, Media, and Entertainment; Business and Finance; Education, Child Development and Family Services; Engineering; Health Science and Medical Technology; Information and Communication Technology; Marketing; Public Services; and Transportation.
Support for the core academic courses, especially English-language arts, math and science, is embedded and reinforced in all CTE curriculum. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) courses are being added with an emphasis on careers in computer science, patient care, engineering, robotics and industrial design. More rigorous and relevant pathways are being developed that align with high-skill, high- demand college majors and careers. The engineering, computer science, and medical pathways have adopted the highly regarded research-based curricula and professional development programs offered by the nonprofit Project Lead the Way. The culinary program is being realigned to a Hospitality pathway to include coursework in hospitality management and the California Restaurant Association Education Foundation program ProStart Culinary Arts. ProStart is a rigorous two-year sequence of coursework leading to industry-recognized certifications and college articulation.
CTE courses are offered throughout the school year, before and during the regular school day, after school, and during summer session. Teachers have received training, professional development, and resources in differentiating instruction and assessments for diverse student populations, including English language learners and those with special needs. CTE/ROP teachers are included on student Individualized Education Program (IEP) team meetings. The active, hands-on, collaborative nature of CTE coursework benefits a wide variety of students and promotes 21st century skill development, equipping diverse students for lifelong success. Indeed, 80% of GGUSD disadvantaged, English learner (EL), and special population students enroll in at least one CTE course.
The CTE program division reviews student GPA, attendance, completion, and graduation data to measure program quality and outcomes, comparing outcomes of students who completed CTE courses vs. the general student population. Two-thirds of GGUSD seniors who completed two or more CTE courses progressed on to post-secondary education. In addition, the division reviews certification attainment and student performance on common sector assessments developed and used by all CTE consortium member districts. Comprehensive end-of-program assessments taken by GGUSD students in CTE capstone courses are compared with outcomes on the same assessments by students within our district and in Orange Unified School District and Santa Ana Unified School District. Finally, students are surveyed regarding their CTE courses. At the end of the last school year, 96% of students surveyed agreed or strongly agreed that “because of my CTE class, I have gained many new skills that are important and valuable to me.” Ninety percent agreed or strongly agreed that “I have a clearer idea about what kind of work I might enjoy and be good at in the future.”
