The games been bot-free for a few months now. At worst I've run into a few closet cheaters.
I won't spend a dime on the game till at least a year has passed, but the game's playable. #FixTF2 did what it needed to. It feels super weird to say, but the game is essentially fixed. You can queue into casual without expecting a lobby full of bots spewing gross and hateful shit in the chat (now its just the bottom scoring scout doing that, though with a significant lack of cheats).
For now I'll be enjoying the game to the fullest.

āœ¦ another (even wilder) theory with bagel
similar to my teruko theory, this one also has a lot of room for rebuttal. to be honest, a lot of the evidence i have for this is quite flimsy (_ _;)
this theory is mainly about mai akasakiā€™s connection to the cast, and how it relates to the killing game in general.
take this with a grain of salt as always
Tumblr media
//spoilers for up to chapter 2 part 1 of drdt
//additional spoilers for bonus content, such as the bonus episodes and the new ā€œliterature girl insaneā€ MV
there shouldnā€™t be any tally5 spoilers if iā€™m not wrong ( 惻āˆ‡ćƒ»)
hereā€™s one question i have for you all: how many members in the cast, right now, actually know mai akasaki?
itā€™s definitely implied in the bonus episodes and the quotes on her character page that sheā€™s connected with everyone in the current cast, but there was a paradox i noticedā€”if it even is one, that is (-.-;)ā€”that led me to think that this questionā€¦may actually be a lot more complicated than it seems.
letā€™s bring up the bonus episodes first. minā€™s bonus episode is definitely during their time at hopeā€™s peak. theyā€™re literally at the school, studying about it, discussing minā€™s ā€œroleā€ as an ultimate compared to the other students, etc. basically, many details point to min and ā€œunnamed classmateā€ (who is presumably mai, based on the flowers in the dialogue box of the bonus episodes matching up with those on maiā€™s tattoo) being students of hopeā€™s peak academy in the united states. though thereā€™s no physical evidence or exact basis for this, i would personally like to think that xanderā€™s bonus episode is placed during spring break at the academy. he is talking to his ā€œclassmate,ā€ after allā€”and in that case, it would also chronologically line up with minā€™s (whose bonus episode takes place a week before spring break).
presumably, the other bonus episodes will follow a similar pattern, and we will see mai/UC talking to other members of the DRDT cast to get to know them more. i will assume this means that the whole cast, not just min and xander, have been to hopeā€™s peak beforeā€”and attended class as students there. after all, it would be the only way the bonus episodes would make sense.
however, the dialogue from the first few episodes of the series suggests something else.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
as implied from the dialogue, all of the students believe they are only entering the entrance ceremony of hopeā€™s peak as freshmen, and had no previous affiliation with the school. including xander.
obviously, this means that at the very least, their memories have been tampered with to remove anything regarding their experience at hopeā€™s peak academy.
ā€” sorry, very quick side tangent (*'ā–½'*) going by this theory, if the drdt cast genuinely went to hopeā€™s peak, itā€™s very likely that they had to do a bunch of paperwork and submit a lot of information for their enrollmentā€”which probably includes medical information and any accommodations that were necessary for their well-being. additionally, if we assume that the cast attended hopeā€™s peak for a year or a few years, itā€™s likely that whoever the mastermind is, they had the time to know the rest of their classmates well enough to be able to identify their preferences either way, this would actually be a pretty strong explanation as to why many components of their environment seem to be extremely fine-tuned to their preferences and necessities, despite no recollection of sharing that information with anyone involved in the killing game. though i bet this was already obvious, i felt like it was something i probably should bring up.
ā€”
in that case, howeverā€”how would it affect their memories with mai?
as i canā€™t exactly speculate for the other students, iā€™m going to trace back to what i know. at the very least, it seems to be implied that min only met mai after being admitted into hopeā€™s peak academy. min essentially drove her entire life around schoolwork, and studying for the ā€œultimate contest for eminent students,ā€ the test that allowed min to receive her titleā€”itā€™s likely that before then, she never surrounded herself with friends nor had any time for herself to explore her own hobbies. which probably means that she wasnā€™t acquainted with mai before enrolling into hopeā€™s peak.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
her backstory is really sad, by the way. i really wish she lived longer ( Ā“ā–³ļ½€)
as for when it comes to the other characters, i would like to remind you that hopeā€™s peak scouts across the country for their studentsā€”so itā€™s more logical to assume that many of them resided in hometowns that were very far away from each other. so unless maiā€™s talent was the ultimate traveler or something, i thinkĀ it would be very improbable for her to know everyone in the cast before their admittance into hopeā€™s peak.
taking this into account, and assuming that the castā€™s memories of hopeā€™s peak were completely erased,Ā thereā€™s a possibility that the cast doesnā€™t remember mai akasaki, despite her connections with them.Ā the only exception would be teruko, who clearly remembers maiā€”and seems to have been helped by her when enrolling into the academy in the first place, pointed out by this theory here by @laly-481.
ā€¦or at least, thatā€™s what i thought at firstā€”untilĀ someoneĀ decided to kick in the door while holding a new music video.
i guess in that case, the biggest question i should answer is thisā€”why does david remember mai?
getting into very, very wild theory territory here. take what iā€™m about to say with a grain of salt assuming that the music video is really a reflection of davidā€™s worldview and thought process, please ignore the fact that iā€™m acting like the antithesis of occamā€™s razor right now, then thereā€™s no reason for mai akasaki to be featured in the videoā€”much less have a photo of her placed in a wooden frameā€”if he didnā€™t remember her.
yet, there she is, on the right:
Tumblr media
she even has a little description about how she was ā€œsomeone dearly loved,ā€ which fits perfectly with her character and the secret quotes on her profile page.
this is indicative of the fact that david remembers maiā€”and knows her well enough to even make an accurate statement about her.Ā but, how?
obviously thereā€™s the simpler explanation of ā€œdavid knew mai before they went to hopeā€™s peak,ā€ which is of course a totally valid explanationā€”however, some details about the new music video made me consider a possible, different theory.
a grain of salt? more like, a mountain of salt from here on out
when i was watching the ā€œliterature girl insaneā€ music video earlier, i noticed something interesting about this frame:Ā
Tumblr media
here,Ā xander doesnā€™t have his eyepatch.Ā though iā€™m not throwing away the possibility that this was just a technical error on the artistā€™s sideā€”personally, thisĀ couldĀ be a indication that david knew xander before the killing game.Ā
seeing as all of the cast are connected by the unnamed ā€œclassmate,ā€ after all, itā€™s a likely possibility that the current participants of the killing game were originally in the same class at hopeā€™s peak academy. which means,Ā they all probably knew each other before this whole killing game went down.Ā
in an earlier theory, i talked about how xander may have been the person in the opening prologue cutscene, and how he probably had his eye injured at that time. given that the person speaking during that scene is aware of the killing game (and is expressing their desire to end it), this event likely happened right before the killing game startedā€”otherwise, it would be pretty imprudent for the mastermind to announce it and then wait for an entire month to set up everything, then make everyone fall unconscious, then remove their memories, etc.Ā
what iā€™m trying to get here is that the cast, had they still retained their memories from hopeā€™s peak, would definitely remember xander with both eyes. however, we know this to not be the caseā€”from his introduction, we all see that xander had already lost his right eye from the beginning of the killing game. therefore, for david to remember xander from before he got his eye injury, he mustā€™ve had at least some partial memory of hopeā€™s peakā€”otherwise, it would be highly unlikely. this would give a possible explanation as to why the frame of xander without his eyepatch appears in the ā€œliterature girl insaneā€ music video. and maybe give a possible explanation as to why david cared about xander despite only knowing him for ~three days. and defended him passionately during the first trial even after a lot of evidence pointed to him attacking teruko.
this also would explain why david remembers maiā€”assuming they were in the same class, since mai likely had incredibly close connections with the cast (including david), itā€™s more than likely that david cared about mai and possibly (vaguely) remembered her even after having his memories tampered with.
well, the ā€œno-eyepatchā€ deduction completely hinges on the assumption that xander didnā€™t like, take off his eyepatch in front of david like he did with teruko, so i may be completely wrong about this. however, it is interesting that such a small detail was included in the mv.
so is this one:
Tumblr media
i donā€™t know how it is for you guys, but that fork seems suspiciously similar to the fork in the prologue (which i theorized to be the item that caused the injury to xanderā€™s right eye). additionally, the fork literally stabbing the ā€œfaceā€ of the clock isā€¦ quite symbolic. it may be just me. iā€™m not sure. (-_-;) though, it could suggest that david remembers that sceneā€”and perhaps knows about the ā€œpossible escapeā€ of killing teruko? i highly doubt he was the one who wrote the note (rather i think that was xander himself), but it may account for that 2nd vote for teruko in the first trial.
my personal (unhinged) theory (with really no way to back it up) is thatĀ david may have retained partial memories of his experience at hopeā€™s peakā€”but probably only a little,Ā definitelyĀ not all of them. this may explain why he remembers mai and seems to recall xander before his eye injury (despite xander seemingly not remembering that theyā€™ve met before)ā€”but hasnā€™t called out the true mastermind nor seems to remember an escape yet. also, though his current behavior in the 2nd trial may imply that heā€™s trying to end the killing game early via wrong vote, i personally think heā€™s just breaking down and acting suicidal without that objective in mind, based on his actions.
little side note at the end: it would be absolutely amazing (and ironic) if the two people with the most distant character relationships with the rest of the cast (as of now) happened to remember the single person that had the closest relationships to all of them.
minor clarification/add-on: i just realized that i never said this, really sorry about that. m(_ _)m but basically, i donā€™t think david has any sort of clear memories regarding xander and mai at hopeā€™s peakā€”rather, when i say ā€œpartial memoriesā€ i meant more along the lines of ā€œvague nostalgia you canā€™t quite place.ā€ he might somewhat recognize their faces at most, but likely not any clear sequences of events. and honestly, what i wanted to talk about more in regards to this theory is more about the fact that only teruko (and maybe david) remember mai in the first placeā€”the rest of the cast probably canā€™t, with the way their memories were wiped.
uh, this was quite the ride. i truly felt like the antithesis of occamā€™s razor as i was writing this
howeverā€”this theory likely has a lot of points that can be argued against, as well as many other possibilities i didnā€™t consider. please, donā€™t be afraid to drop them in your reblogs or comments, i would love to read them!
and as always, take this with a (larger than usual) grain of salt

Game Clearing 2023: A Retrospective
Once again, it's time to look a back at everything I played.
Tumblr media
As always, I will talk more about each one after the cut.
Crash Bandicoot: The Huge Adventure : Jan 3 - Jan 5
I've played the original PS1 Crash games countless times, and I've always wondered how the GBA games compared (the platformer ones at least). And over all, I'd say they're pretty decent at recreating the gameplay. However, there's one big issue that does occur a couple times. Sometimes, you'll have to do a leap of faith and you just have to hope you fall properly. What's worse is that sometimes there's an enemy there, so I started mashing spin after every leap of faith. This still sucks for time trials. But at least there's an actual reward for getting relics, other than a gem. I also ended up cramping my left hand from constantly holding down the L button to dash, so that's something.
Shadows Over Loathing: Jan 6 - Jan 11
This was actually a gift from my good friend Mippy, although I would have bought it anyway. I've watched a playthrough of the previous game, West of Loathing, and I was really looking forward to this installment. I found the story very enjoyable, and chuckled quite a few times. I also really liked the combat and RPG mechanics. I did consider going for every Steam achievement, but not only would that require multiple playthroughs, but some things are very easy to lock yourself out of, requiring either a guide or another playthrough. This is also why I typically don't go for completing achievements.
Donkey Kong: Jan 13 - Jan 13
Last Christmas, I had purchased Mario Vs. Donkey Kong. But before I played that, I wanted to check out the game often thought as its prequel, Game Boy Donkey Kong. And honestly, it's a really good time. All the sideflips and handstand jumps make the movement in this game really fun. The varying worlds also keep you on your toes. It's also not too hard; you will die a couple times, but the bonus games means you're probably not gonna game over.
Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc: Jan 14 - Jan 27
This was one of two gifts I got from my Secret Santa last year. Thank you so much, Bilth. After playing Rayman 2, I knew I had to check out the follow-up. And, other than the AV cables for my PS2 dying, it was pretty fun. Generally, I would say the game is about as fun as Rayman 2, and I can see why people prefer that to this. I thought the new powers were pretty cool, and most of them played off of Rayman's base moves well. Now I can't wait for Rayman 4!
Mario Vs. Donkey Kong: Jan 14 - Jan 20
After really enjoying GB DK, I was excited to try out this game, and I wasā€¦ mildly satifsied. I found the first couple worlds to be just as fun as the original game, but then the plus worlds came in. Instead of getting a key to a door and then saving Mini-Mario, you instead have a Mini-Mario with a key you need to escort to the door. The problem with this is that Mini-Mario will always try to get to you no matter what's in the way, except in some cases, but it's really hard to tell when he stops and when he'll throw himeself into spikes or lava. Leading to a lot deaths that don't feel like your fault. Still, it's kind of a shame that future Mario Vs. Donkey Kong games basically became Lemmings, instead of refining this platforming gameplay. Also, in case you're wondering about the Expert world, that would require me to go through most of the levels all over again for a high score, and I can't be bothered to do that.
Super Mario Bros: Peach's Adventure: Feb 4 - Feb 8
I've played a lot of Pokemon hacks, so it was only time till I tried out a Mario hack. And with Super Mario World alone having thousands, if not tens of thousands of hacks, I had a lot of choices, but I had heard good things about this hack, and I have to agree. The levels are great, the music is awesome, and the secrets were fun to find, especially that Special World. I would definitely recommending checking out this hack.
Pokemon Crystal Clear: Feb 8 - Feb 17
This has been regarded as one of the best Crystal hacks, and I can definitely see why. Imagine if you could start from anywhere, get any pokemon, and fight the Gym Leaders in any order; including Kanto. That is what Crystal Clear set out to do and really excels at. Honestly, if you're like me, and wanting to play Crystal again, but with some small tweaks to keep it interesting, I'd say to try this out right now. I'd even say it's worth more than one playthrough, to see what happens with a different orderā€¦
Crash Bandicoot 2: N-Tranced: Feb 24 - Mar 2
After healing my hand, I returned to try out the second Crash Bandicoot GBA game. And I do think it's a bit better than the first game, for the most part. It's a lot like Warped, where they added a lot of vehicle levels with Coco and Crunch, and some vehicle sections in Crash's levels. I do think the level design is overall better than Huge Adventure, with a lot less leaps of faith. Which sounds like it would make the time trials easierā€¦ except that gold is not good enough. If you want your save file to be 101%, you basically need all platinum relics. Which I did not do, cause as it turns out the relics don't get you anything. No new levels, no new gems, you don't even need them to fight N. Tropy, as you actually need the hidden color gem shards instead. Honestly, I would say to completely ignore the time trials if you want to play this game, unless you want to go platinum.
Kirby's Return to Dream Land: Mar 3 - Mar 10
With so many hours spent in Super Star Ultra, I'm surprised I've never played RtDL until now. And not long before I started playing, a remake has come out! Oh well. I still found this game to be very enjoyable. Generally breezy, but does have some challenge if you do decide to go for 100%. And the Extra Mode didn't feel repetitive either. Part of me wishes I could have played through this with a friend or two, but it's still great in singleplayer.
Pokemon Coral: Mar 12 - Mar 17
This is another hack that, since I first saw it, I knew I had to try it out. And, even though it's just a demo, it quickly became one of my favorites. I think what separates this from other Pokemon hacks is that is really does feel like a Pokemon game GameFreak could have back in the day. It was a fun romp, and the few secrets I did fine were very cool. I look forward to future demos and a full release whenever they come out! Also, if I had a nickle every time a little girl turned out to be very threatening, I'd have two nickles, which isn't a lot but it's funny it happened twice.
Viewtiful Joe 2: Mar 18 - Mar 31
With the first game setting up a sequel hook, I felt it appropriate to play through the sequel this year. Andā€¦ it's alright. I would say it's on par with the first game. I did find Sylvia to be neat, although I did not play as her much except when a puzzle required her abilities, if only because I was more familiar with Joe. Honestly, the only real low point with the game would have to be same as the first game, which is the boss rematches. This is largely because of the bosses being such damage sponges that each one can take several minutes to beat. Aside from that, it was an enjoyable ride. It's a shame this game also ends on a cliff-hanger, and there wasn't a Joe 3. The closest would be Red Hot Rumble, which is more multiplayer-focused, and Double Trouble, which I have heard mixed things about.
Kirby's Dream Land 3: Apr 5 - Apr 6
This will be one of two most controversial takes in this list, but I really did not care for this game. Not that I think this game is bad. After playing so much Super Star, I have a hard time going back to games that have one-button abilities, even though this came out afterwards. The various Animal Friends you get to use are pretty cool though, and I found the Heart Stars to be neat little puzzles. Honestly, this is definitely a case of it's not the game, it's just me.
Yoshi's Island DS: Apr 7 - Apr 23
Ohhhh boyyyyy. I was warned that 100%ing this game would be a pain. And they were right! While the new babies are cool, the level design is cruel. A lot of times, there'd be hidden red coins or flowers, or a cloud of stars. Speaking of stars, they are a lot more rare in DS, and you're gonna need them more in this game, since it feels like the enemies respawn the second they go offscreen. And what's worse is that they're aren't any star items here either. While you might say that there is content locked behind going for 100%, those Extra levels are even worse. To a point where beating them is challenging enough. I honestly wish I didn't play on actual hardware cause then I could have used save states and rewind.
Pizza Tower: Apr 24 - May 11 & Aug 26 - Aug 31 & Oct 23 - Oct 24
And here is the game you were expecting to be here. Yeah, this game is fantastic. It literally caused this ordering to seem odd. I really like this game, its movement, its soundtrack, it's all so great. And I had originally planned to just get the S-Ranks and maybe get the P-Ranks next year. But then really felt like going for 101%. A feeling that I usually don't get. So I went back at it. Were some of those P-Ranks difficult? Yes, but man, did it feel good finally getting them. I then finished the game by doing a speedrun (something else I typically don't do) to get the John Suit. And the Halloween update dropped. I thought the new content was very fun and definitely tested my abilities. Now to wait for the Noise update.
Cult of the Lamb: May 11 - May 19
This is a game I played last year, but it got a pretty sizable update, adding a new QOL stuff and additional post-game content. I also really love the heavy attacks, making my favorite weapon, the axe, even better as a boomerang! The relics were also a cool way to change up crusades, and boss rematches were also good way to test all the new stuff. Overall, I enjoyed my return to the cult, and with more content coming next year, chances are I will be writing about this game again.
Antonball Deluxe: May 23 - May 25
As I wait for Antonblast, I decided to check out the game that came out before it, Antonball! And it was pretty solid arcade style game. I did go through both Antonball and Punchball, but I did not 1cc them, but I may do that at a future point. While I did originally like Punchball more than Antonball, I now think I like latter over the former.
We ā™„ Katamari REROLL + Royal Reverie: Jun 1 - Jun 9
Both PS2 Katamari games were my childhood, so I was excited to see a WLK remake. And honestly, it does a very good job at presenting katamari to a new generation. I would whole-heartedly recommend this game to anyone who hasn't played it on PS2. One small gripe I have is that the Royal Reverie is a really small part of the game, only being five stages, with them being remixes of previously existing stages. But still, Katamari Damacy is fun, no matter how the gaming landscape changes, which is just wonderful.
Hey! Pikmin: Jun 12 - Jun 17
As I waited for Pikmin 4, I decided to check out the fourth Pikmin game, Hey! Pikmin. And it's okay, I'd think. I feel like I don't hear a lot of people talk about it, which is a shame as I thought it was enjoyable. This game did a good job of taking the Pikmin formula and turning it into a puzzle-platformer. I was skeptical of the game being only touch controls and the Circle Pad, but it really works and it's pretty fun to use. While the game is on the easy side (and will offer to skip levels if you die too much), I didn't mind it. Although unlike any other game in the series, I don't see myself replaying this game anytime soon. Also, I did not do the amiibo stuff, because I have an old 3DS and would need to buy an adapter for it. Even if I did, I only 3 of the 9 amiibo I have would even be compatible for it.
Pac-Man World Re-Pac: Jun 19 - Jun 23
Despite playing Pac-Man World 2 and 3, I never played the PlayStation original. Until I tried out the remake, that is. And I really liked it! The levels were fun and I enjoyed the mazes. However, there was one small thing they changed that deterred me from getting true 100%. In the original game, in order to get 100%, you needed to also complete the Maze Marathon mode. However, instead of that, in order to get 100% in the remake, you need the Magic Key. Now, this Magic Key did exist in the original game, but it required an extremely high score and only counted as bragging rights. While the remake does lower score requirement, it still meant that since I sucked the slot machine game, I would need to play every stage all over again and just hope that I get a higher score, which I would rather not do.
Annalynn: Jul 2 - Jul 4
This little arcade style game is very cool. It's a maze-style game, with a couple worlds and three levels per world. After beating the Normal Mode, I was going to try to try to 1cc it, but then I spent a lot of time in Random Mode, until I realized it was an endless challenge. So, I decided I would use the Practice Mode, since perfecting levels there still counts for palettes. It was a real test of skill, but man did it feel great finally perfecting them all. I will definitely be coming back to 1cc this at a later date.
Frogger: Helmet Chaos: Jul 9 - Jul 19
After playing those two Frogger games, I decided to jump all the way to this title on the DS (and PSP). I've gotta say, this game has a lot more secrets to it then I originally thought. While there's obviously secret 1-ups and health extensions, this game also has a branching path system that's actually pretty complex. Depending on what actions or exits you take, you can either playthrough the game as just Frogger, or you could play as all three characters in one playthrough. And these other characters not only play differently, but also have entirely unique levels to them. It's honestly a shame that's there's not a lot of footage in this game of the multiple pathways, because they are definitely worth looking into. And in case you were wondering, I'm not playing any of the Frogger games I skipped.
Pikmin 4: Jul 22 - Jul 27
Ah yes, one of the games I was most looking forward to this year. Pikmin 4 does what sequel should do, it takes what worked and what's memorable about the previous entries, and combines it with some new stuff to make it feel like a homage to those that came before, while still standing on its own. Honestly, the reason I'm talking not too much about it, because I want to people to play it blind. Yes, even if you have never played a Pikmin game, I'd say to give it a shot!
Yoshi's Story: Aug 4 - Aug 6
Oh boy, this is the other controversial take, that I really did not care for this game. I thought going for all Melons and all Hearts would make things more interesting, and while it did do that, it did not make me appreciate the game more than just the fact this game has a harder challenge in it that most people wouldn't even know about. And the minigames to get the melons just kinda suck. I personally do think the game can be fun, but I do wish I could play the game as a set of stages and not have to do multiple playthroughs to play every stage.
Rayman Raving Rabbids: Aug 10 - Aug 11
Here we go. I recently acquired the Raving Rabbids Party Collection, which as you could probably guess is a collection of the first three Rabbids party games for the Wii. As someone who really likes Go Home and thought Travel in Time was okay, I've always been curious of these earlier games. And the first game is pretty rough honestly. Like, even without the context, it feels like the game was never meant to be this. The minigames too are just ok, with a lot of them just shake the Wiimote. No joke, I beat this game, after many attempts at one of the rhythm games, and woke up the next morning with sore arms. And I know there's also a Score Mode to do, but I don't like any minigames enough to replay them for high scores, and apparently you can't even beat the Score Mode on the Wii version due to a bug (and I doubt this collection patched it).
Rayman Raving Rabbids 2: Aug 13 - Aug 13
This one will be quick. You can tell this was designed with multiplayer first, as there's not really a singleplayer campaign other than just playing the minigames by yourself. Again, I didn't feel like going for high scores, because for some games, getting a high score is less on your skill and more on the opponents not screwing you over. At least the rhythm games here didn't give me sore arms. Also, I'm gonna go on a tangent about how much I dislike how Rayman looks in this game. He looks fine in the menus, but in the minigames he moves very oddly, and looks off (which I would not have noticed if 1P mode didn't lock me into being Rayman). I get that they need everyone to share the same hitboxes and animations, but he feels like a mod in his own game. No wonder he was phased out starting with the next game.
Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party: Aug 17 - Aug 18
I can safely say that this was definitely my favorite out of the three. The minigames here were great. I feel like having groups of minigames with similar theming but still being unique was a good call. (for example, all the shooting games take place in a movie studio, but the movies are different). You can also play basically the prototype for Just Dance here, and honestly it was more fun that I would have thought! I was also worried that, since I no longer own a Balance Board, I would be locked out of playing certain minigames. Thankfully no, and while I can't say I played this with my butt as advertised, I did like them more then the past entries. This game makes me wish I could have played with at least another person, because I would have enjoyed that a lot. If were to choose one of these three games to go back and get a high score on, it would probably be this one.
Paper Mario TTYD64: Aug 18 - Aug 26
One last mod for the year, and it's a Paper Mario mod! I really love PM64, so this gave me a chance to play through it all over again. Except, it's different, because this mod adds in a lot of the mechanics from TTYD, as you might assume from the name. I did use the Danger strats, and with the new badges added, it did trivialize some parts of the game. Of course, the game also has multiple difficulties for you to choose, from the pathetically easy to the nearly impossible. And it even has two other modes with a built in randomizer and one where you only use Bow. I definitely need to check out those other modes, and can't recommend this mod enough!
Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World: Sep 2 - Sep 12
Even when I did have a Wii U, I never played Woolly World. So this port was the only way I could play it. And honestly, I liked it! This game's pretty chill compared to the other Yoshi games I played, even when going for 100%. I feel like the fact that you don't need to get everything in one visit really helped with that, alongside the Power Badges. Of course, the game still does some challenge, especially in the extra levels. I also really like the aesthetic, it's very cute and stands out among the other titles in a good way. There's also the Poochy Dash stages, which were a nice change of pace. I should mention the amiibo content, which I was unable to do, but thankfully all I was locked out of was additional Yoshi costumes and a time trial mode for the Poochy stages. Would definitely recommend this one.
Star Fox Assault: Oct 4 - Oct 7
After playing 64 3D, I wanted to try out the other game in the series that's most recommended: Assault. Andā€¦ I like parts of it. It might be because I've never played Ratchet or Jak, but the on-foot gameplay just did not click with me. Even with the many times I had to use it, I just did not care for it. However, the vehicles and the on-rail sections were pretty fun. This game also has a multiplayer mode, which seems cool, but as I have no one to play with, I don't have much desire to play it. A bit of shame, as there's a lot of stuff you can unlock for it. Oh well. And, in case you're wonder if I'll play SNES Star Fox, Command, or Zero: Maybe, probably not, and definitely not.
Super Bomberman R2: Oct 8 - Oct 12
Super Bomberman R was one of the first games I got for my Switch, so when this was announced, I was pretty excited! And yeah, it's pretty good. The story mode had a bit of a more open world with exploration and puzzles. Honestly it kinda felt like a mix of the SNES Bomberman and 64 / Generations style of gameplay, which really worked. There's also the new Castle mode here, and it was not too great. Yes, I like the idea on paper, but for two out of the three worlds, the layout I created ended up being too much for the AI. No joke, I could put my controller down, and the enemy would never reach the base. So that was a bit of a letdown. The other parts of the Story Mode are good, and honestly I would recommend playing it even if you only care about the multiplayer, since beating it gets you so many coins you can spend on the shop. I am sad that 100%ing didn't unlock my main from R1, who had similar requirements there. Guess I'll just have to play Karaoke Bomber instead.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder: Oct 30 - Nov 1
My, it has been long since we've had a new Mario platformer, hasn't it? While I do like the New Soup games (as I remember getting New Soup with a DS as a Christmas present), I was thrilled when Wonder was announced. So much personalty and charm oozing out! And honestly, the best way to describe how it feels to play Wonder is that it takes right back when I was playing NSMB as a child. Just so much amazement, and dare I say wonder as I trekked through the levels and found all of their secrets. I would personally say to go for 100% as it's very fun and the Special World is a worthy challenge that feels like the right amount of difficulty. I really hope this game sets a precedent for not only good Mario games again, but also that giving the devs as much time as they need can make a truly fantastic game.
Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope: Nov 7 - Nov 25
This game was the other Secret Santa gift I got from Bilth, and honestly I wish I played it sooner. While I have never played an X-COM styled game, I really enjoyed this one! I really did enjoy strategizing against all of the enemies the game could throw at me. And I do have a set of heroes I used the most (Luigi, Peach, and Rabbid Mario), I felt like all of the heroes were not only equally useful, but had plenty of synergy with each other. I at first wasn't sure if I was gonna for 100%, but I was enjoying myself the whole way! You better believe I'm gonna be playing those DLCs next year, once I figure out if I need a Ubisoft account or not.
Plok!: Dec 5 - Dec 10
Out of all of the games I've played this year, Plok! is honestly a tricky one to recommend. And I've definitely had a lot of fun with it, but the difficulty can deter people from finishing it. Plok doesn't have enough invincibility frames and dies in fewer hits than you'd think, the way that continues work makes it very easily to lose progress, and no saving and no passwords means you gotta beat the game in one sitting. Of course, those last two don't really apply if you're not playing on official hardware, but it's still a valid complaint. Also yes, the soundtrack is very, very good.
And that's the games, as always, here is a tierlist of all the games.

attack on titan social media headcanons
Tumblr media
how i think the 104th would use social media in a modern!au (includes eren, mikasa, armin, jean, marco, sasha, connie, historia, ymir, bertholdt, reiner & annie) - mac
masterlist
eren jaeger:
most used app: snapchat
still does streaks on snapchat - over 600 day streak with jean and to keep it going they just send insults to each other.
has the most cracked screen, itā€™s literally hanging together but he refuses to get a new screen until it no longer works.
would leave the house with 14% battery (this makes me incredibly nervous but eren knows heā€™ll be able to charm his way into someone giving him their charger.)
mikasa ackerman:
most used app: instagram or tumblr
mikasa should be hired by the fbi or something - give her a name and she will find all their social media pages.
iā€™m not sure what it would be but sheā€™s definitely part of a fandom of a tv series or music group which is why she spends so much time on tumblr.
unlike eren, she actually has a case to prevent her screen from smashing - it would probably be one of those clear ones with flowers on the back, and sheā€™d put in a polaroid picture of her and her friends in the back of it.
armin arlert:
most used app: youtube
he hasnā€™t got many posts on his instagram but a few of some pretty landscapes and a couple of group photos of him and his friends. his profile picture is of him, eren & mikasa.
literally could spend all day on wikipedia. he goes to google something but then falls down a rabbit hole.Ā
vsauce? asap science? random reddit videos? sign armin tf up.Ā
jean kirstein:
most used app: twitter or spotify
does gaming live-streams with eren. people watch not to see gameplay but to see the entertainment that is jean and erenā€™s competitive arguing (they play a lot of call of duty, mario kart, but also minecraft when theyā€™re actually on good terms with each other)
gets into heated arguments with people on twitter. they go on forever because jean likes to have the last word/tweet.
you know those people that always have their headphones in? jean is that kind of person. heā€™d be sneakily listening to music during class (letā€™s be real heā€™s definitely got airpods.)
marco bodt:
most used app: instagram (& whatsapp because heā€™s in a lot of group chats)
the best hype man. comments on all of his friends selfies telling them how gorgeous they look.
he sends motivational quotes and wholesome memes to all of his friends which are always appreciated.
marcoā€™s the one to put together group chats and ensure that arguments in them are smoothly resolved (eren and jean are usually the culprits.)
sasha braus:
most used app: tiktok
definitely makes very chaotic tiktoks/tweets that just blow up and end up on popular pages that repost to instagram.
her and connie would spam group chats with memes and selfies with stupid filters on. sometimes theyā€™ll just target one person in particular (always jean) and they end up getting kicked or blocked.
her instagram captions tend to be random quotes and inside jokes from her friends (mainly connie) much to the confusion of everyone else.
connie springer:
most used app: instagram
has a private account on instagram just to post embarrassing pictures of his friends.
goes into conspiracy theory facebook groups just to troll the people in them.
out of everyone, the most likely to have games on his phone. when heā€™s bored in the car or during class heā€™ll just start playing geometry dash or temple run.
historia reiss:
most used app: tiktok
you know sheā€™s got a tiktok with 100k followers. tiktok dance trends, makeup tutorials, look books - she does it all.
loves pinterest so much. gets a lot of outfit/home decor ideas from it - itā€™s likely that thereā€™s a ton of photos of her on pinterest as outfit inspiration.
types !! like !! this !! and uses these emojis: āœØšŸŒøšŸ’–šŸ„° way too much.
ymir:
most used app: facetime
half the time sheā€™s on her phone is going to spent spent facetiming historia i canā€™t lie.
i personally hc that ymir in a modern!au would play either the bass or drums and i can just see historia begging to post a tiktok of her playing that then blows up - ymir would be so nonchalant about it but inside sheā€™s dying of excitement.
probably has every group chat sheā€™s in on mute - occasionally will lurk to see whatā€™s going on, would only ever join in the conversation if drama was going down in which sheā€™d send a gif of someone eating popcorn.
bertholdt hoover:
most used app: youtube or discord
likes to watch those reddit story time videos. would spend a good few hours watching them without even realising what the time is.
has 0 posts on instagram. cannot do any insta stalking of him (unless you looked through his tagged photos and find the ONE selfie he ever took with reiner.)
does a lot of gaming and uses discord to talk to his gamer friends (probably plays more story based/quest games compared to eren and jean - maybe like the last of us & skyrim!!)
reiner braun:
most used app: instagram
at least two shirtless pictures of him on his instagram (and way more if youā€™re on his private snapchat story - he likes to make it known that heā€™s at the gym. )
uses ā€˜lmaoā€™ so much to the point he says it out loud not just over text
for some reason these emojis (šŸ‘šŸ‘šŸ‘‹šŸ’Ŗ) make me think of reiner ?? instead of replying ā€˜okayā€™ or ā€˜byeā€™ you just get ā€˜šŸ‘šŸ‘ā€™ or ā€˜šŸ‘‹šŸ‘‹ā€™
annie leonhardt:
most used app: spotify
follows so many cat accounts, sheā€™s considering making her own to post pictures of her cat.
out of everyone, likely to be the person who uses social media/her phone the least, it probably overwhelms her quite a bit so unless sheā€™s messaging someone (or looking at cats,) itā€™s unlikely to see annie on her phone.
does listen to a lot of music on spotify though - sheā€™s got a study playlist, a playlist for when sheā€™s at the gym, songs to listen when sheā€™s just chilling at home - her spotify wrapped every year is pretty impressive.
BONUS:
spotify or apple music?
spotify: jean, mikasa, bertholdt, ymir, reiner, annie, sasha, historia
apple music: eren, armin, marco, connie
who sends memes into group chats?
eren, jean, sasha, connie, reiner
how long do they take to reply to messages?
replies instantly: marco, historia, sasha, connie, reiner
leaves you unopened for 3 days but then replies: eren, jean, mikasa, armin, bertholdt
leaves you on read: ymir, annie
who has the highest screen time?
eren, historia, sasha

Note
so i am back on the grima train and i was reading through your posts (absolutely quality, for which i can only thank you !! šŸ’“) and you mentioned in one about his use of magic that you have a Lot of Feelings about grima in relation to gender and plz i need to hear them!! (if you want to share? šŸ‘€)
LOTR: Grima & GenderĀ
Oh man, so Grima and gender. My favourite topic. Other than Grima and magic - but theyā€™re linked! So, thatā€™s a bonus for us.
I want to thank you so much for asking this question. I have wanted to rant about this for Forever.
This became incredibly long, but the long and short of it is that Grima undermines social expectations of masculinity in Rohan through his disdain for martial achievements, his occupying a more private/passive role within the kingā€™s household rather than the expected ā€œmasculineā€ public/active, his use of spells and potions being an ā€œunmanlyā€ and ā€œcowardlyā€ approach to problem solving, and his reliance on language and soft-power approaches to politics.
All of this works to position Grima within a more feminine role and character - at least within the context of Rohanā€™s hypermasculine performativity of manliness.
[It does allow us to read Grima as trans with greater ease in terms of fitting into the canon than the usual favourites, other than Eowyn. So, you know, do with that what you will. Eowyn and Grima both want to be queen. Let them be in charge! Iā€™m going to get my ass bit for this.]
-
Grimaā€™s gender performance needs to be quickly situated within the broader context of masculinity in Middle-Earth. Gondorā€™s ideal of masculinity is the gentler masculinity that everyone focuses on when they talk about men in middle earth being good models of what masculinity can look like. Itā€™s a nurturing masculinity, itā€™s gentle, itā€™s healing-focused. Aragorn and others try and take the first off-ramp from violence or conflict whenever they can. There is no enjoyment in warfare or soldiering. Itā€™s done because itā€™s necessary. Dick-swinging is limited to non-existent etc.
Rohan is different.
Faramir touches on this when he speaks to Frodo of how Boromir was more like the men of Rohan and how he thought that wasnā€™t a good thing as it meant he was seeking glory for gloryā€™s sake, relishing war and soldiering as an occupation rather than an unfortunate necessity.
Of course, Faramir was also making (some very dubious) racial commentary, but race and gender are often bound up together (e.g. hyper-masculinization of black men and the feminization of East Asian men in the North America).
As R.W. Connell says, ā€œmasculinities are congurations of practice that are constructed, unfold, and change through timeā€ ā€” and, additionally, masculinity must be defined in opposition to femininity but, also, other masculinities.
For Rohan, there is a strong, militarized hyper-masculinity that threads through their culture. One of the reasons Theoden was seen as a failing king was his physical decline and inability to continue being a physically strong king. His aging emasculated him, more so when compared to Theodred and Eomer. (Something Theoden believed of himself and Grima capitalized on.)
For this, Iā€™m going to speak of masculinity of the upper classes, since thatā€™s what we see for Rohan. Masculinity, and how itā€™s to be performed, is contingent on social variables such as, but not limited to: age, appearance and size, bodily facility, care, economic class, ethnicity, fatherhood, relations to biological reproduction, leisure, martial and kinship status, occupation, sexuality etc. and as we never see lower class Rohirrim men itā€™s impossible to say what the ā€œacceptableā€ and ā€œexpectedā€ forms for a farmer or cooper would be.
Upper class men of Rohan are expected to be militarily capable - ready to ride and fight when called by their king or marshal. They are to be men of action over word, and when language is in play, itā€™s to be forthright and plain. No riddling. Marriage/Husband-ing is an expected part of manhood. Being strong minded, and capable of taking charge and making decisions is important. Fatherhood is also clearly prized, especially fatherhood that results in son(s).
(Theoden only having one child could be read as another ā€œfailureā€ in living up to Rohirrim ideals when compared to the older kings of his family who were far more prolific.)
The appearance of an ā€œidealā€ man is tall, fair, and handsome. Physically strong and capable in all ways (martially, sexually, fertile etc.).
Men should be able to demonstrate that they are capable of being in charge, taking control, defending and protecting families and homes. This slots in with more generalized expectations around bravery, honour and glory.
[Eomer: And that, in summation, is how you are to Be A Man.
Grima: Well that sounds utterly exhausting.]
-
So, with all of that in mind, letā€™s talk Grima.
First, letā€™s address the name and character construction as this is the least bound up in how he acts and its tension with Rohirrim ideals of Being a Man. Itā€™s also interesting in that it can give a glimpse into Tolkien and the possible thoughts he had when constructing Grima.
Grimaā€™s Name & Beowulf Stuff
Grimaā€™s name is from old Icelandic Grimr, which is a name Odin takes during the Grimnismal saga.
Here are some lines from Odin in the saga:
I have called myself Grim,
I have called myself Wanderer,
Warrior and Helmet-Wearer,
[...]
Evildoer, Spellcaster,
Masked and Shadowed-Face,
Fool and Wise Man,
[...]
Rope-Rider and Hanged-God.
I have never been known
by just one name
since I first walked among men.
Not only is Grimaā€™s name from Odin, more importantly, itā€™s the feminine version of that name. No man in the eddas or sagas goes by Grima. Only women. And most often they were seidr-workers or healers/magic practitioners of some kind.
"Other healers include GrĆma from FĆ³stbrƦưra saga and LaxdƦla saga and HeiĆ°r from Biarmiland in Haraldā€™s saga HĆ”rfagra."Ā
- ā€œHostile Magic in the Icelandic Sagas,ā€ Hilda Ellis-Davidson
And
"There was a man called Kotkel, who had only recently arrived in Iceland. His wife was called Grima. Their sons were Hallbjorn Sleekstone-Eye and Stigandi. These people had come from the Hebrides. They were all extremely skilled in witchcraft and were great sorcerers."Ā
- LaxdƦla saga
This is most likely something Tolkien was aware of ā€” I would be flabbergasted if he wasnā€™t. However, did he fully appreciate the implications in terms of gender and subversion of masculinity? Impossible to say, of course, but he certainly knew he was giving his male character a name that has only been used by women in historical texts.
It would be akin to naming your male character Henrietta instead of Henry. Itā€™s a deliberate, explicit decision. And while I donā€™t think Tolkien expected most readers to track down the origin of Grimaā€™s name, the --a ending, to most anglophone readers, signifies a feminine name, more often than not. At least, it rarely, if ever, signifies masculine.
So the name alone brings in, at a subconscious level to readers, feminine qualities.
Alongside this, Grima is loosely based on Unferth from Beowulf. The entrance of Gandalf et al into Meduseld directly mirrors Beowulfā€™s into Hrothgarā€™s hall (complete with Grima lounging at Theodenā€™s feet the same as Unferth at Hrothgarā€™s). Indeed, it was clearly Tolkienā€™s intention to make a call back to Beowulf with that scene. (He was being all ā€œlook how clever I am. Also these are Anglo-Saxons on horses. As a general fyiā€).
Unferth is a fascinating character in his own right ,and there is much scholarly debate around his role within Hrothgarā€™s hall, as well as the text more broadly. While there isnā€™t enough time/space to get into Unferth, I will quickly note that he is another character who subverts his societyā€™s ideas of manhood and masculinity ā€” particularly with regards to expectations of heroism and bravery. Yet, at the same time, Unferth is noted for being very intelligent, cunning, good at riddling, and overall quick witted (also, a kin-slayer. Dude murdered his brothers for Reasons).
Unferthā€™s contrary behaviour that flies in the face of Anglo-Saxon norms and ideals of masculine bravery is clearly reflected in Grima. Particularly in Grimaā€™s fear of battle and lack of interest in taking up his sword when called by his king.
This leaves us with a character who was given a womanā€™s name and who is loosely based on another character who is known for his inability to follow through on his societyā€™s expectations for masculine behaviour.Ā
Grima, from the first moment we meet him, clearly reads more feminine than masculine - this is amplified when heā€™s contrasted with the likes of Theoden and Eomer. And, not only is his aligned with traditional femininity more than other male characters, he is specifically aligned with the more negative tropes of femininity (i.e. lack of bravery, unreliable, dubious morals etc.).
-
That is a brief overview of the bones of Grimaā€™s construction: name and inspiration. Now for actions and characterization within the text. This will be subdivided into comments on his use of magic and how that interfaces with Rohirrim masculinity then weā€™ll get into power and language.
Grimaā€™s key point of power is his ability to weave words in so powerful a way he could convince Theoden of his own infirmity and weakness thereby securing control over the king. Alongside this, we know that he was using certain ā€œpotions and poisonā€ to further weaken Theoden. Most likely to amp up the kingā€™s physical weakness so it coincided with Grimaā€™s mental magic games.
Magic for Anglo-Saxon and early medieval Scandinavians was heavily rooted in the power of the spoken word. Runes were probably used but the historical support of this is vague. Which is to say, we know they were used, weā€™re just not certain how and to what extent.
We do know that rune staves were a thing. They were most often used to send your landwights after opponents or wreck havoc on enemies from afar. To make one, a magic-worker would carve the prescribed runes onto a large stave and position it in the ground facing the direction of their enemy. On top of the stave was added the head of a horse. (Lots of horse sacrifice happened for early medieval Scandinavians, alongside some human sacrifice.)
But, the brunt of magic for Anglo-Saxons and early medieval Scandinavians was spoken word. Which makes sense as their society was, like Rohanā€™s, predominantly illiterate or, at least, para-literate (though, there has been some recent archeological evidence that is starting to call that into question, for what thatā€™s worth).
In particular, Grimaā€™s spellwork aligns most closely with seidr, a fact Iā€™ve gone about ad nausea. And, again, something we can assume Tolkien was aware of, which means he was also aware of the gendered implications of a man practicing the craft.
The mainstay of seidrcraft is, but not limited to, the following:
making illusions,
causing madness and/or forgetfulness,
brewing of potions and poisons,
prophesying,
channeling the dead,
channeling gods,
removal of elf-shot, and
recovering lost portions of someoneā€™s soul.
The first three bullets are things Grima does to Theoden. That kind of magic ā€” the kind that fucks with your mind and your sense of self, the kind that is subtle and quiet and lurks beneath the surface so you donā€™t know itā€™s happening, thatā€™s cunning ā€” that kind of magic is what women do.
It was considered unmanly/effeminate for a man to partake in it as it undermined the hypermasculine militarized culture of the time. Winning a battle or a fight through spells and poison was cowardly.
Therefore, in Rohan where we have this hypermasculine culture that so prizes military glory and grandeur and martial might, Grima pursuing his goals through spellcraft and potions/poisons is Grima pursuing distinctly unmasculine, effeminate modes of action.
Indeed, within Rohan it could call into question the entirety of his masculinity. It would make him ragr (adj. unmanly) because his actions are the epitome of ergi (noun. unmanliness).
"In the Viking Age, homosexual men were treated with extreme disdain and a complex kind of moral horror, especially those who allowed themselves to be penetrated. Such a man was ragr, not only homosexual by inclination and action, but also inhabiting a state of being that extended to ethical and social qualities. This complex of concepts has been extensively studied, and in the words of its leading scholar, "the unmanly man is everything that a man should not be with regard to morals and character. He is effeminate and he is a coward, and consequently devoid of honour". [...] What we would call sexual orientation was, in the viking age, completely bound up with much wider and deeper codes of behaviour and dignity, extending way beyond physical and emotional preference." -Neil Price, Children of Ash and Elm: A History of the Vikings
Though Price references specifically homosexuality in this passage, a man could be considered ragr for more than just that ā€” and one of the other ways was through practicing seidr.
We see this with Odin, who learns how to do seidrcraft from Freyja, and is then mocked by Loki for how emasculating the practice is for Odin to undertake (as if Loki has any room to talk). Odinā€™s made himself effeminate, heā€™s made himself unmanly, heā€™s allowed himself to learn spells that could enable him to take a cowards way out of a situation, to be dishonourable etc.
Which is a neat tie-back to Grimaā€™s name being one of Odinā€™s names, particularly when he is in disguise and using seidrcraft and wily ways to escape various unfortunate situations that he ends up in during the Grimnismal saga.
(As Odin says: I have been called Evildoer, Spellcaster, Masked and Shadowed-Face, Fool and Wise Man.)
It also mirrors him to Gandalf - another character who bears an Odinnic name. Gandalf very much represents the masculine, ā€œacceptableā€ aspects of Odin. Grima embodies the darker, more dubious, and more effeminate, aspects of the god. As Iā€™ve said in other posts, they are two sides of the Odin coin.
Though both are temperamental as fuck.
-
Alongside the spellcraft and potions, Grimaā€™s performance of power does not align with Rohirrim traditions and ideals. He relies on his wits and his skill with language to navigate the world. Succinctly captured in the epithet bestowed upon him: Wormtongue. This is the modernization of Wyrmtunga, or, Dragonā€™s Tongue.
Wyrm can translate to worm, sure, and we see Saruman doing this on purpose when he refers to Grima as a worm, a creature that crawls in the dirt. But Wyrm, of course, is actually a form of dragon. And in Middle Earth, wyrm is used interchangeably with dragon (Smaug is called both wyrm and dragon), rather than denoting a specific species/categorization of dragon as it does in our world.
Grimaā€™s approach to power is that of a gentle touch. He speaks softly, but doesnā€™t carry a large stick. Heā€™s not Eomer or Theodred, who are much more traditionally martial, aggressive and forthright in their responses to a situation. Grima is clearly all about influencing those around him either through persuasion/use of words, or through spellcraft. He manipulates, he uses linguistic trickery.
-
Additionally, how he undertakes his role as advisor to the king places him more within the private world of Meduseld and the kingā€™s household than the active, public world of marshals and thanes. And, of course, the private world of households was traditionally considered the womanā€™s domain while men were expected to occupy the public spaces of the world.
Of course, being involved in court politics is a public role as opposed to existing within a wholly private space (such as Eowyn. Who, in the books, takes a mostly private role until she is required to rule in her uncleā€™s stead while he and Eomer are off at war, and even then it is clearly considered a temporary situation and part of her duty as a woman). But the manner in which Grima occupies that public position is a more ā€œfeminineā€ one.
We can assume that if Eomer or Erkenbrand or Elfhelm occupied the role as advisor to Theoden, they would have a very different approach to the position. A much more aggressive, active and probably military-focused approach. Less carrot, more stick.
A quick note on his appearance in the film, aside from being entirely in black with black hair in a land full of blonds because he needed to be visually distinct as the Bad Guy. He is dressed in longer tunics and robes compared to Eomer and other Rohirrim men (aside from Theoden, but as soon as he is ā€œhealedā€ of his possession(?) he returns to the Proper Masculine shorter tunics than the Weak and Effeminate longer robes and tunics of before). Grimaā€™s hair is longer than Eomerā€™s and Theodenā€™s, he wears only a dagger and not a sword, the furs and quilting of his clothes indicate wealth and status, of course, but also decadence and effeminacy.
-
All in all, Grimaā€™s performance and actions undermine and subvert Rohirrim expectations of masculinity. If not outright transgressing gender norms. He uses spellcraft to achieve his ends which is cowardly and effeminate. When itā€™s not that, he relies on language and manipulation to ensure his position and rarely, if ever, willingly takes on an active, martial role that would be expected of a man who is in the kingā€™s household and serves as an advisor and a quasi-second-in-command.
Here is a man, occupying a manā€™s role, but doing it like a woman. Subversive! Scandalous! Underappreciated by fandom!
Grima lives in a liminal, marginalized space that is at once gendered and ungendered but is absolutely Othered.
-
As for my note on Grima and being trans - absolutely a trans woman. Grima suffers from that thing of ā€œI want to be you and sleep with youā€ re: Eowyn. Thatā€™s my hot take. (Similar to me and Alan Grant from Jurassic Park - I want to be him and sleep with him.)
But no, in all seriousness, a strong argument can absolutely be made for Grima being not-cis, however that might look for Grima. Grima and Eowyn are the two, within the trilogies, that have the strongest arguments to be made for not being cis.
(Grima is a bit of a foil for Eowyn, I think, while also being a foil for Gandalf.)

Hakuoki Yuugiroku 3 drama: Please teach me, Yamazaki-san! English translation
Special thanks to @nollatooruā€‹Ā for extracting text again since thereā€™s no way this would have been translated anytime soon since the majority of drama translations that Iā€™ve found as videos only are near the very bottom of my to-do list.
This is my translation of theĀ č–„ę”œé¬¼ 遊ęˆÆ録 éšŠå£«é”ć®å¤§å®“ä¼š åŗ—é“ŗē‰¹å…øć€Œę•™ćˆć¦ćć ć•ć„å±±å“Žć•ć‚“ļ¼ć€, the Yuugiroku 3 (too much of a hassle to look up the actual name) drama: Please teach me, Yamazaki-san!
Tumblr media
Ended up doing a bit more research that I would have liked to translate this since the names of the positions in the Shinsengumiā€™s organization for spies didnā€™t translate well from Japanese into Chinese (huzzah for google translate and for biographies that list names in Chinese and Japanese so I was able to find the information I was looking for in English)... Also, i didnā€™t look up the gameplay for anything since I had to uninstall KW and EB for space when I was taking things off my damaged passport, not that it would have made much of a difference since I canā€™t recall a point when theĀ ā€œWatchā€ was actually voiced... so I might not really be consistent with a few things in this translation since I only did research during the latter half of this...?Ā
oh well. i donā€™t know Japanese and donā€™t do the editing for my subtitle videos until I compare everything to the audio later so I can claim ignorance. i suppose thatā€™s an odd benefit of not understanding Japanese hahaha.Ā  Ā
Anyway, as always, my translation not be 100% accurate since I translate from Chinese. final edits will probably take a bit longer (in comparison to the other things iā€™m still sitting on) to do since im stillĀ debating about what im do with all the Watch-related words since I really donā€™t like it when the things I translate arenā€™t consistent....
PERSONAL RECOMMENDATION: I HIGHLY ADVISE AGAINST READING THIS AND WAITING FOR MY SUBTITLE VIDEO.
Hakuoki Shinkai Yuugiroku,Ā Please teach me, Yamazaki-san! Drama CD
Translation by KumoriYami
Yamazaki: (I think that since there haven't been any large manhunt operations lately [reword later? tl can also mean "to hunt and arrest"], things have been quiet.)
(However, what is that guy doing/is that guy's purpose?)
The one out there, I'm not going to run.
So come out and tell me why you're spying on me.
~wind blows~
(Not planning on coming out...?)
-grips sword-
Then, I'll take the imitative to attack.
(movement in bushes)
Souma: Ah, please wait a moment!
Yamazaki: Oh. You are... Souma-kun?
(movement in bushes again) Saito: Sure enough, I was immediately found/discovered/I was detected immediately.Ā As expected of Yamazaki.
Yamazaki: Based on just the breathing, I thought there was only one person, yet Saito-san was also still here. Exactly what are you doing?
Souma: Sorry! I didn't mean to do anything strange.
It's just that I wanted to observe Yamazaki-san work.
Yamazaki: Observe me work?
Although it's fine if you want to watch, but aren't you the Chief's page?
Saito: I recommended that he try this,Ā  But he was immediately found. Still it's better to ask the person himself directly.
Yamazaki: You two, what are you talking about?
Souma:...Um, Then, Yamazaki-san, please show me how to [/you] work! ----
Souma: Hakuoki Shinkai Yuugiroku, Store Bonus Drama CD,Ā Please teach me, Yamazaki-san! ----
Yamazaki: In other words, you now understand the duties of a page, and still want to know what sort work the other warriors do, and want to try monitoring/surveillance/doing the Watch's work?Ā
Is that how it is? Souma-kun.
Souma: It's just as you said. As the chief's page, I work hard every day, but I still don't know a lot about the Shinsengumi.
That's why I went and asked Saito-san [about this].
Saito: I know that Souma is working very hard.Ā Though that will naturally be [more/become] obvious as time goes by/Though as time goes by, that will naturally be understood/Although this has been said for a while, this will naturally be understood. [check audio]
Yamazaki: But you don't want to wait for/until then, and want to be of use as quickly as possible?
Souma: Yes. Can you help me with this, even if it's [for] just a little bit?
Yamazaki: Hm.
Souma: Yamazaki-san.
Yamazaki: No, I was just reminiscing the past/thinking about the past.
I used to be as anxious as you are.
Alright, if I can, permit me to teach you.
Souma: Thank you very much!
Saito: Then can I also accompany/join you?
Yamazaki: Saito-san also wants to? That won't be a problem.
Saito: I also have experience following people while on patrol
I'm very interested in how the Watch [im pretty sure it's the Watch here and in the earlier instance. tho i can't say for certain since CN doesn't exactly do capitalization and ive never played the game in Chinese] fulfills its duties.
Please allow me to learn again. [check audio]
Yamazaki: In that case then, I'll ask you to please look after me.
----
Yamazaki: Although it normally referred to as the Watch,
the Watch is actually divided into two sections.
Souma: In terms of how it organized, sorry but please review it for me again.
Saito: The part of the organization for spies which acts by itself to gather external intelligence is called Shoshi shirabeyaku ken kansatsu*, and within that, those who are responsible for investigating/monitoring the conduct of [the/our?] members/the investigators whose duty is to supervise the conduct of/our members are known as the Kansatsugata**
* Shinsengumi's organizational post for investigating movements of the opponents and keeping the Shinsengumi members under control. (source: https://japanese-wiki-corpus.github.io/person/Kuwajiro%20OISHI.html)
**Ā  had to look this up on the Shinsengumi wiki.samurai-archives
Yamazaki, who holds both positions/is capable of accomplishing both duties, is at the core of the Kansatsugata.
Souma: Shoshi shirabeyaku and Kansatsugata...
After hearing this again, I really feel that Yamazaki-san is quite amazing.
Yamazaki: Uh, do-don't say that out loud. I'm not used to it.
Souma: But, monitoring/investigating/supervising the conduct of the other members...
Saito: It's to secretly investigate whether or not members are conducting themselves in a manner that is befitting as members of the the Shinsengumi, and whether or not they have done anything improper.
Souma: In other words/That is to say, that also includes my actions so far.
Yamazaki: At the moment, you have no problems [there are no problems with you?].
Souma: Is-Is that so...
Yamazaki: There are almost two hundred members. Among them, there will be people who do not abide by the regulations, and those who clearly show their dissatisfaction/obviously dissatisfied or are treasonous/or even rebellious.
Souma: I see. Indeed there are people who obviously show that.
Saito: Ā It these people incite trouble within the team, it would be very troublesome.
That's why the Kansatsugata are needed to investigate people like this.
Yamazaki:Ā Having said that, the three of us have been quite noisy so it would be helpful if we quickly correct that here. Ah. The two of you, over there.
Saito: Say who is there [more like "name" i guess? probably more "identify who is over there" ]
Souma: That is... Nagakura-san? There are several other people [He's with some other people/several others].
Yamazaki: This is a rare opportunity to train one of the basic skills for spying/[needed] as a spy. I'll give you a demonstration. Afterwards, you'll eavesdrop on their conversation without being discovered.
Souma: Yes, I'll do my best.
--------
Saito: Almost 15 minutes have passed. But it's really bold for you to have come up with this practical training, Yamazaki.
Yamazaki: For his first time attempt at doing this, Nagakura-san is suitable [to practise with]. As long as one isn't murderous [being bloodthirsty? think of something later], he'll basically ignore you.
Saito: Nn. If it was Souji, he would immediately draw his sword for a harsh/ruthless interrogation.
Yamazaki: No, Saito-san would do the same thing, and immediately get rid of your pursuer [not sure if this is in the "dispose of" sense though the tl i have can be translated that way lol].
Saito: Well, it doesn't feel good to be tested when I obviously haven't been disloyal.
Yamazaki: It's as you say, but this is my job.
Souma: AAAHHHHHH!!!!
Saito: Uh. [Thatā€™s] Souma. Why is he being hunted down [chased/pursued]?
Yamazaki: By whom/Who is it? Ah, Okita-san, at this time?
(frantic steps) Souma: Sorry! I didn't mean to do anything else!
This was just training for surveillance work!
(sword swung) Souma: AAAHHH!!
Okita-san, please forgive me!
Saito: An unexpected situation.
Yamazaki: He needs help to get away/escape from that situation, he isn't his opponent at all/he's no match for him.
Saito: I'll figure out a way to deal with Souji. You escape with Souma/You take Souma and run away. --------
Souma: Truly thank you for just now. Okita-san was already behind me before I realized it I really thought that I was going to die/I was dead.
Saito: Dying is a bit of an exaggeration.
But I'm certain he would have stabbed your neck with his sword and left you half-dead.
Yamazaki: I didn't expect Okita-san to be nearby, but there was way of knowing that you'd encounter him/but nothing can be done about meeting him [check audio].
Well then, change your mood for the next training [reword later]. The target is that room. Remain quiet from this point onward.
Souma: What's next?
Yamazaki: Take this letter and swap it with the letter in that room. But, in the next room, there is someone you must not be detected by.
Saito: Training for intelligence work? If this goes well, then it's possible that the other party won't even notice you.
Souma: That would be good, so it's just this letter? Then, I'll be right back.
Yamazaki: Ah, be very careful.
---------
Yamazaki: He entered the room without any problems.
Saito: Ah. So, who is the person in the next room?
Yamazaki: Well, it shouldn't matter since that person is asleep during the day.
( door slides open, then frantic steps)
Souma: Saito-san, Yamazaki-san! I'm sorry! I couldn't do it! Ā  As soon as I entered the room, I felt that someone was staring at me through the door of the next room! There was also this creepy laughter/ing!
Saito: Laughter? The eyes staring at you, were they red? Ā [i swear this is going to become fanart one day lol. for both the spying and souma talking about what happened]
Souma: Yes! they didn't look like human eyes at all!
(door slides open.... slow creaking footsteps)
Saito: Does that mean that one over there was...
Yamazaki: Ah, damn it! He's awake!
Saito: Yamazaki, you go first! I'll deal with this!
Yamazaki: Sorry! I'll leave the General Secretary [so... i don't really like the English localization translation of Sanan's position being Ā a "colonel" so i looked up what it said on wikipedia and used that] to you! Souma-kun, come here!
This training/Training ends here!
Souma: Eh, eeehhhhhhhh?!
Saito: I'm sorry that it was noisy while your rested [that this noise disturbed your rest?], this was as a result of... --------
Souma: Ā What the hell that just now...
Yamazaki + Saito: It was just your imagination.
Souma: Eh. But, "General Secretary" was clearly said...
Yamazaki + Saito: You imagined hearing it [tl is more "it was an illusion" and one that is heard... maybe "you're hearing things"?. kinda gave up on thinking about that right now. ]
Souma: Ā Is, is that so... uh. That being said...
Saito: What's wrong/What is it?
Souma: Although the Kansatsugata feels quite unremarkable, each individual/everyone posses outstanding abilities, and I've been made aware of that again. [However] I 'm incapable of doing this sort of work.
Yamazaki: Hm. It can be said that you're not talented at this.
Souma: Eh?
Yamazaki: In the first place, not everyone can do this.
All of us within the Kansatsugata are constantly working on improving our skills.
We're always fighting in the shadows for the Shinsengumi.
What you think of being outstanding abilities is the results of our hard work. [remarkable capabilities?]
Souma: Truly, Yamazaki-san is amazing. I understand why everyone trusts you!Ā Ā
Yamazaki: Th-That's why you shouldn't look at me like that. But for you, I think that you're better suited to doing honest work [tl can basically mean "honourable," "not devious" or "out in the open" in the straightforward sense] and not this secret monitoring work/surveillance in the shadows [reword later].
Saito: Indeed, compared to secretly taking covert actions in the shadows, you are better suited at working in the open, Souma.
Souma: I-is that so...
Thank you very much for this/that. If it's possible, I hope to still learn some things from you.
Yamazaki: There will be opportunities for that. Then, we'll end today's training here. Souma-kun, is there/do you have anything else you want to ask?
Souma: [Something] I want to ask.... ah. then, Yamazaki-san, may I ask you one last question?
Yamazaki: Ah, if I can answer, I won't hold back [will/do so].
Souma: What sort of technique is the "Tatami flip"?
Yamazaki: Ta... Where did you hear that name from?
Souma: Just now during this investigator training/spy training, Nagakura-san mentioned it/Nagakura-san mentioned it while doing the operative training. It is said that it is Yamazaki-san's most powerful technique.
Yamazaki: That guy said something unnecessary! No, Souma-kun, that's.... It's not something amazing like a secret technique..
Saito: Why are you being modest? That move is indeed capable of being referred to as/called Ā a secret technique. If it's possible, I'll ask you to please teach me it. Perhaps I will be able to apply it to kenjutsu.
Yamazaki: Even Saito-san, what are you saying? [Even Saito-san is saying this? check audio]
Souma: Please, Yamazaki-san!
Saito: I'll be requesting the same of you, Yamazaki. [tl is more "i'm also requesting (you) to do so/asking"]
Yamazaki: Bo-Both of you, please raise your heads. I-I get it! I'll teach you.
Souma: Really?! Ā Thank you very much!
Yamazaki: But, you can't tell anyone else about this.
Saito: Nn. Understood.
Yamazaki: Then, please get behind me. Aoyi***, Tatami flip!
This is the literal Mandarin pronunciation of the tl without tones.Ā CN tl can mean ā€œprofound argumentationā€ (in Chinese), tho it's also used to refer to some of the highest level of martial skills in JP (so says a baidu search on the term).Ā
The English google translate of that page puts this phrase as "Ogi," and after reading this page that mentions "ogi" (http://www.aikiweb.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-9948.html#:~:text=Yielding%20is%20called%20%22ju%22%20as,an%20open%20heart%20without%20ego.), so i will probably change this to either "Secret move" or "hidden technique" based on what it mentioned there
Souma: Uoh!
Yaamzaki: Ju-Just now, that was the Tatami flip.
Souma: Amazing, that was amazing, Yamazaki-san! How were you able to do that without any tools [check audio]? Please tell me how to do this!
Saito: This can be used indoors while fighting defensively/can be used as a defence when fighting indoors. It can also be used to hinder an enemy's movements.
Yamazaki: Yes. This requires focusing your strength into the centre of your palm, and within a single breath, smack/slap the edge of the tatami, and then lifting it up when the edge bounces.
Souma: So it's like that? Hoh.... tatami flip! Uh. Areh? It didn't bounce at all.
Yamazaki: Haha. It's not something you can master right away. It also took me a long time to do it. Concentrate/Focus a bit more strength into the palm of your hand.
Souma: Ha! Ah! Yah! It-It's not moving...
Saito: Practise makes perfect./Won't practise make perfect [check audio]? Alright, I will challenge this. Should the position of my hand be around here?
Yamazaki: Yes. [Though] It's better to have it moved a bit forward [moved up a bit]/ if the if the center of gravity is moved forward.
Saito: Understood. Then, I'll be going. Secret technique: Tatami flip!
Yamazaki: No way...
Souma: Uoh.
Saito: Nn. That happened naturally [reword later...? tl is is basically "letting nature take its course was achieved"] .
Souma: Sa-Saito-san, that was amazing! You actually succeeded in one go!
Saito: No, there's no guarantee that this will succeed every time. The accuracy and speed can be further improved upon.
Souma: Really, the Shinsengumi has assembled some amazing people. I can't fall behind and have to work even harder.
Saito: Ah , work hard. I am always willing to practise kenjutsu with you.
Yamazaki: Ah, but, to have it actually done it so easily, my confidence...
Saito: What is it, Yamazaki?
Yamazaki: No, I just feel that need to train a lot more. Let's improve together, Souma-kun.
Souma: Yes! Please look after me!
Souma Kazue, Kaji Yūki Saito Hajime, Toriumi Kōsuke Yamazaki Susumu, Suzuki Takayuki
-end-
sorry but this is the only souma thing i have scheduled for april.Ā
also i wanted some Yamazaki content translated, but i unfortunately donā€™t remember if i ever found Yamazakiā€™s route from Yuugiroku 2... so I settled on translating what I hope is a certain complete chapter (as viewed via the extras menu) of Soujiā€™s route with him in it... sorta. scheduled for july!

Favorite and Least Favorite Ghidorah Incarnations
Probably gonna regret making this post, but itā€™s been a long time coming, so letā€™s do it. I guess I should warn, not suitable for people sensitive to opinions that might be different from their own. Canā€™t believe I have to say that about a list of fav Ghidorahs, but alas...
Anyway, enjoy!
-
Letā€™s start with my Top 5 favorite Ghidorahs! Going from my most favorite down! All five of these are amazing and any one can easily become my #1 at any given time! :D But at the moment, my number 1 is...
Showa Ghidorah
Showa Ghidorah should come to nobodyā€™s surprise, given how much Iā€™ve been writing about him lately! I admit though, it wasnā€™t always like this. It took some time for him to grow on me, and he actually used to be one of my least favorite through design alone. But he has grown exponentially on me, and now I love everything about him! The manes are unique and I love the crescent moons on his heads too. His eyes are so big, and I feel they have more expression compared to other Ghidorahs. And the inspiration of the more traditional Eastern-style dragon is there in his face too.Ā
His backstory and personality, though, is what really got me to change my mind about the character. His personality is perfect as far as Iā€™m concerned! Coming from space to destroy planets just for the lolz, cackling maniacally all the way! Even the fact he was mind-controlled was something for me to delve into in my stories, on how such a thing impacts the character. It really opened my eyes to the more subtle parts to his personality, like I realize that Ghiddy wants NOTHING to do with Earth. He tried to destroy it once and that failure is all he needed to know to stay away. The plot device of mind-control is used to keep him coming back in future movies! Even when he defeated Godzilla and Rodan, he chose to fly away back into space! Thereā€™s layers to his character if you look deep enough!
Thereā€™s just so much story-potential to this guy, I love it! Even in real life, he has an arc, going from one of my least favorites to being the top of this list! Thatā€™s definitely special!
Overall, a lot of love for this character, often wrestling with Legendary for the number 1 spot! Speaking of which...
Legendary Ghidorah
The one that started it all for me and theyā€™re second on the list?! Blasphemy!! Nah, seriously though, Showa and Legendary really do often switch places for me all the time! Just right now, Showa has squeezed into the top spot. For now........
Anyway,Ā Legendary Ghidorah needs no explanation for being a favorite incarnation of the character. Whilst Godzilla has always been a very vague presence in my life, KotMā€™s is what had me diving headfirst into the fandom, all because of Ghidorah. Their design is amazing, sleek and intimidating! The detail that they whip up storms just by flying creates an awesome menacing atmosphere everytime theyā€™re on screen!
The personalities between the heads is unique, providing all sorts of material for my writer side to explore! Their backstory is left open for me to explore as well, like where they came from and how their species functions! Itā€™s been a lot of fun! I may be slightly burnt out from how much Iā€™ve written and posted about them, but make no mistake, I still ADORE this Ghidorah and I have them to thank for starting this whole page in the first place!Ā
Shin Ghidorah
Thatā€™s right, Shin Ghidorah exists in official TOHO canon and he needs more love!!
Shin Ghidorah was one I was introduced to not long after I learned Kamata-kun (oh, and Shin Godzilla) was a thing. With my obsession with Ghidorah, I wanted to know if there was a Ghidorah in the Shin universe and after some digging, I found that there was! Featured in a ride in Universal Studios Japan! And better yet, videos of it exists on youtube! I loved it the second I saw it!Ā
The design is amazing and surprisingly unique! This is because Shin Ghidorah was originally a scrapped concept for the original Showa Ghidorah! Like, Shin Ghidorah is basically an oversized three-headed Skullcrawler with wings! Because you see thoseĀ ā€œlegsā€ he has? Those are actually ARMS!! Ghidorah couldā€™ve been a giant Skullcrawler all this time!!
I also love his movements, oddly enough. He doesnā€™t just fly, he SWIMS though the air, something I donā€™t recall seeing in any other Ghidorah!
The only thing I donā€™t like about him... is the fact that he wasnā€™t around longer! A shame the ride is so short, I wouldā€™ve LOVED to see more of him in a movie. Oh well...
Grand/Cretaceous Ghidorah
Both are the same individual, so theyā€™re both in this entry! I remember learning about him through a video talking about Ghidorahā€™s most sadistic moment and this was it. Grand Ghidorah kidnaps children with the sole intent to devour them, but he doesnt eat them right away, no. He holds them hostage to stew in their terror, returning to them every so often just to listen to their screams and cries. You know heā€™s enjoying every minute, knowing heā€™s torn families apart. Without a doubt, all this is just a game before he destroys the world as Ghiddys do. The way he toyed with Mothra Leo, leaving him to suffer after beating him to near-death. Or the way he possessed one of the Mothra twins to try to kill her own sister! It was great! He has such a regal design too! I can see why the fanbase have come to call him Grand King Ghidorah, heā€™s absolutely majestic. Shame heā€™s overshadowed, likely due to not being in a Godzilla movie.
Cretaceous Ghidorah has a more Western-dragon look to him and it works. He is basically a baby Ghidorah and he is so cute! His big eyes and squeaky roars, I love it! He also SOMEHOW made me feel sorry for my least favorite dinosaur! That's some true power right there!
The regeneration ability too, is amazing! This is likely where Legendary got the idea, but Grand does it better by regenning from just a small piece of tail left behind. Just badass, all around!
Void Ghidorah
A controversial pick, I know. I made a whole post about my detailed thoughts on Void Ghidorah, see here. Long story short: I think he has great potential, just suffered from piss poor execution. I love the idea of turning this alien dragon into an interdimensional GOD, with followers and everything. His full-body model looks amazing! Heā€™s the biggest and most powerful Ghidorah yet, the biggest kaiju in the entire franchise in fact, and I donā€™t see him ever being topped. Granted, I dun really judge how much I like a kaiju based on how strong they are, but itā€™s a bonus here. He needs all the help he can get!
Adding more, his roars are insane, not just a combination of Showa and Heisei Ghidorah! But sounds that are truly otherworldly.
Void Ghidorah deserves love, and a better movie. Guess Iā€™ll just settle on Godzilla: Star-eating Wings as the go-to Void Ghidorah video!
-
I have no real opinion on the new ride Ghidorah, as I have yet to watch the full "movieā€ and thus, canā€™t judge how well Iā€™ll like it compared to the others. So for now, tis neutral.
-
Now Iā€™m totally going to get hate for this list of ā€œleast favorite Ghidorahsā€, but this is my opinion. I donā€™t like any of them, and theyā€™re all outshined by my favorite non-Ghidorah kaijus, and some even being beaten by my ā€œmehā€ kaijus! Anyway, this is gonna go fromĀ ā€œbestā€ least favorite to my ā€œworstā€ least favorite. Here goes:
Heisei/Mecha-Ghidorah
Tis no secret that I donā€™t particularly like Heiseiā€™s version of the character. Iā€™ve mentioned it more than enough. Oddly though, I liked the design when I first looked through Ghidorahs from past movies, and I DISLIKED Showa Ghidorahā€™s design. How things have changed when I learned more about both of them...Ā
Now Iā€™ve grown to not like Heisei very much. They took Ghidorah as an alien dragon that destroys planets for fun, and turned him into pets that Iā€™m sure are meant to be cute, but just remind me of Furbyā€™s in how creepy they are (tis not the good kind of creepy either!). I like the scrapped idea of him being an attempt to clone Showa Ghidorah from DNA left behind when he destroyed Venus, so I keep that canon in my head just for some attempt to like him more. Tis why I call himĀ ā€œKitty Ghiddyā€ whenever I write him, I legit cannot take him seriously. Such a shame that heā€™s basically replaced Showa Ghiddy on merchandise, so itā€™s harder for me to find said Showa Ghiddy because of this thing. Oh, well.
Oh, and he replaced the BIDIBIDI of Showa with generic Rodan calls. And he also turns into a good guy at the end of the movie with Mecha-Ghidorah, and.... well, go down to the next entry for my thoughts on stuff like that.
GMK Ghidorah
Heā€™s a good guy here. They nerfed the fuck out of him by having him be a juvenile (not even done well like Cretaceous Ghidorah), and turned him into a good guy. Granted, he was never meant to be in this movie in the first place and it shows. Iā€™m a villain kind of person, and Ghidorahā€™s evilness is one of the biggest draws to his character for me. So taking that away... It just doesnā€™t work for me. It says something when I like GODZILLA more than Ghidorah in a movie. His design is okay, so at least he has that going. But...
Desghidorah
I really donā€™t like the design of the character. Thatā€™s literally it. I think four-legged Ghidorahs are very awkward looking; Ghidorah has a lot going on as is, three heads, two wings, two legs, two tails. Adding more legs... itā€™s just too much going on that tips the scales from ā€˜awesomeā€™ to ā€˜messyā€™ in my mind. I canā€™t explain too well why I really donā€™t like the four-legged look to Ghidorahs, I just really donā€™t. But credit, he does pull off the look slightly better than the last one on my list.
AND MY LEAST FAVORITE GHIDORAH AND LIKELY TO GET A MOB ON ME IS.....
Keizer Ghidorah/Monster X
ā€œAn awkward horseā€ is what someone described him to me as, and I canā€™t help but agree. Again, that four-legged look breaks it for me but somehow, he looks EVEN MORE awkward than Des. I just canā€™t look passed it. Maybe itā€™s the front legs, or the wings looking too small for his body. Des just LOOKS a bit more natural in his four-legged-ness.Ā
Making it worse for me, Keizer has a second form that I REALLY donā€™t like: Monster X. They donā€™t even resemble each other. I canā€™t help but feel MX was supposed to be his own Kaiju, but they felt pressured to make Ghidorah the final boss so they combined them. Dunno if thatā€™s the case, but it feels like that to me. Not even getting into theĀ ā€œhow the hell does a dragon come out of THAT, where does it all GO when he changes back?ā€. And the biggest thing: I donā€™t like human-looking characters. I donā€™t care for human characters at all in any sort of media, or anything that resembles humans too closely. I skip human scenes entirely just to get to the monsters.Ā Tis why I donā€™t really care for gijinkas either. As far as Iā€™m concerned, I like the kaiju for being kaiju, and making them human just takes away all things interesting.
If Ghidorah kept everything intact about his personality, but you made him human... I wouldnā€™t even give his character a second glance, much less devote my Tumblr page to him! But yeah, tangent over. Monster X just looks too human for my tastes.Ā
Plus, tis hard to compete for my attention when youā€™re in the same movie as FW Gigan! It says something when Showa Gigan and Showa Ghidorah can share the screen and I love them both, but FW Gigan completely outshines FW Ghidorah...
-
So there we go, a complete list of my thoughts for every Ghidorah incarnation that I can think of. Hopefully I didnā€™t miss any. Again, these are my opinions and youā€™re free to like whatever Ghidorah. Iā€™mma sleep now.

Having several thoughts about how gnolls are really cool as a basic concept but hot damn D&D 5eā€™s lore for them is absolute garbage, and... seriously, Tieflings are in the fucking Playerā€™s Handbook now but gnolls are just Too Demonic For Players? Does someone at WotC like, have something against hyenas or something?
So Iā€™m posting my fanmade gnoll rework concepts that Iā€™ve had for years and Iā€™m finally accepting Iā€™m never gonna fucking use.
Just
Fucking
Base it off actual hyenas as a starting point. Think about what hyenas are actually like compared to other predators.
For ability scores, A lot of the playable gnoll races Iā€™ve seen give them high strength or dexterity, which is kind of a weird one because I donā€™t think hyenas are particularly dexterous, not compared to other predators like cats. Theyā€™re pursuit predators with relatively good endurance, they have really good immune systems that make them effective scavengers, and theyā€™re pretty darn hard to kill. Gnollsā€™ biggest physical stat bonus should be Constitution, absolutely no question, with strength next. For mental stats... hyenas are really smart by animal standards, and good at cooperative problem solving in particular. Being bad at any particular mental stat in D&D/Pathfinder doesnā€™t really fit with that, but if the system requires a stat penalty for balance reasons Charisma is probably the best one to put it in to represent the cultural and body language barriers between gnolls and... well, non-furry humanoids.
7ā€² tall, 300 lb gnolls is kind of bizarre since spotted hyenas are pretty close in weight to humans. Wikipedia lists 198 lb as about the heaviest weight for them. My headcanon for this is that gnolls are supposed to be human-sized-ish, but the clans a heroic adventuring party is most likely to get in a fight with are, yā€™know, the ones that are basically demon cults, and have a significant number of 7ā€² tall monstrosities as a result of interbreeding with demons.
Spotted hyenas are matriarchal and females are bigger and stronger than the males. This shouldnā€™t be reflected in RPG stats other than a difference in the height and weight stats basically get ignored unless someone needs to carry an unconscious character or something, for the same reason that ability scores ignore sexual dimorphism for every other race in the game and... does any culture in D&D canonically have strong gender roles by default besides the Drow?
Having a super-short lifespan is technically not ā€œunrealisticā€ for an animal-based race, but itā€™s... just really player unfriendly, especially when half the partyā€™s probably playing elves and dwarves that live like 300 years.
Other traits: Give ā€˜em low-light vision, disease resistance (not poison: disease specifically). Gnolls have powerful jaws and should have a natural bite attack, but like... most of the time natural weapons on a humanoid shouldnā€™t actually be very useful in armed combat because... yes it can do serious damage, but so can a fucking spear, and you can run someone through from a lot farther away than you can bite them, and not have to expose yourself to someone driving a fucking knife through your chin while youā€™re trying to rip their arm off. If you give gnolls any other gimmicky combat ability, it should be based on teamwork or survivability / making it a miserable process for someone to attack you.
Iā€™m kinda ehhhh on gnoll subraces, other than maybe giving demonblood gnolls their own stats.
Okay so for gnoll culture... first of all we have to figure out how to handle Yeenoghu, and thereā€™s two ways of handling this that I like.
Option 1: Yeenoghu is actually just the gnoll war goddess, but is believed to be a demon lord by most other cultures based on rumors spread by people at war with gnolls, and... like, literal demonization your enemiesā€™ gods is a common phenomenon throughout history IRL. This is best for a low-magic campaign where the gods donā€™t get involved enough to correct these misconceptions.
Option 2: Gnolls are a cautionary tale of what happens when demon cults arenā€™t stopped early. Gnolls actually have/had their own patron deities, but theyā€™re now powerless to protect their people from Yeenoghuā€™s followers, and theyā€™ve overrun a significant portion of the species. Not so much through conversion as through conquest as subjugation and extermination, except now theyā€™ve reached such a critical mass and become so much of a threat to other cultures that itā€™s turning them against the surviving non-cultist clans, and some of them are starting to convert by ā€œchoiceā€ because they see it as the only way of surviving thatā€™s left.
With this one, I really like the idea that Yeenoghu is actually female and the widely known lore gets her gender wrong due to a translation error / misinformation / because of very human gender stereotypes causing people to assume that female demon lords are all the sneaky, subtle, corrupting/tempting types and that a demon lord of sheer brutality and destruction would obviously be male. This misconception persists because Yeenoghuā€™s followers are too busy eating people to discuss pronouns.
The other really important factor driving gnoll culture to evolve in certain ways is that gnolls are obligate carnivores. Their diet needs to be mostly meat, whether living or dead, and in a medieval-tech society, unless itā€™s really high magic I donā€™t think a sedentary gnoll community would be able to produce enough food to support themselves. However this doesnā€™t require gnolls to be hunter-gatherers / survive by raiding.
Seriously guys. Nomadic pastoralist gnolls. Or at least transhumance. Gnoll shepherds, using domesticated hyenas as herding animals. Or if youā€™re doing a Western AU... consider, and Iā€™m just saying consider this as an option: Gnolls in cowboy hats.
However, in warfare this also creates the darker side of even non-demon-worshiping gnolls. Theyā€™re predators, and biologically adapted to be scavengers, and in any premodern setting an army marches on its stomach. It is way harder for gnolls to keep a fighting force supplied, especially if the enemy is burning their own fields and any livestock they canā€™t take with them. Why would they pass up free meat? Even if they have a taboo against cannibalism unlike real hyenas, do humans really count as cannibalism for a gnoll? Not eating enemy corpses would be a huge handicap for them.
This, of course, tends to make most other cultures hate gnolls if theyā€™ve fought them in recent memory, and resort to tactics like poisoning livestock or corpses, or infecting them with contagious diseases (disease resistant doesnā€™t mean disease immune, IRL spotted hyenas can still catch diseases like rinderpest). Unfortunately in gnoll culture that is considered a war crime.
Seriously though, hyenas are cool, gnolls are a really cool concept if you actually make them basically anthropomorphic hyenas, IDK if I have to eat my ā€œNot A Furryā€ card over this.

UC 51.03 - London Business School vs Hertford, Oxford
Since it was introduced at the 1988 Olympics, every single Gold Medal in the Womenā€™s Team event in the Archery has gone to South Korea. Including yesterdayā€™s win thatā€™s nine straight victories, and their period of unparalleled dominance continues. The menā€™s team have also won six of the nine they have contested, and a mixed team won the first staging of that event in Tokyo too. Adding their success in the individual events, South Korea have won 26 gold medals, and 42 in total, in the 43 archery events which have been thus far staged at the Olympic Games.Ā
As Twitterā€™s own @tarequelaskar pointed out in the brilliant article which alerted me to this story, this is a perfect example of specialisation, an economic concept whereby countries or companies focus intensely on one particular aspect of a given industry and come to serve that niche in such a specialised fashion that they become the ultimate experts and nigh-on irreplaceable. This is done in government and business by providing companies with incentives to specialise, and supporting those who succeed at it.Ā
With respect to Korean archery, similar forces are at play. There are a bunch of professional teams and leagues in the country, giving archers financial stability while they focus on their training, something not as common across the world. Said training involves such things as practicing in live baseball stadiums and replicas of the Olympic venues, to mimic first the atmosphere and then the conditions that will be present on the day of the actual tournament.Ā
This philosophy of marginal gains - the same system used by Team Sky and Chris Froome to win multiple Tour De Frances on the trot - puts their preparation miles ahead of the competition, which goes some way to explaining their dominance. It is not the only reason. Before the fine-tuning of the elite shooters comes the discovery of the promising young ones, and the inspiring nature of past success (along with a historic national love of the sport) helps to create a virtuous cycle which give Korea a far larger number of archers to choose from than any other country. This greater choice means that there is a greater chance of finding the next Gold medallists.
Making the argument that professional footballers are at a higher level than other elite sportspeople, Michael Cox used this same argument in a recent article for The Athletic. To summarise, he stated that because there are a far higher number of people who wish to become professional footballers, that must mean that the ones who do make it are at a higher standard than those who make it in other sports. Initially, I was drawn in by the pure maths of this point, but having thought about it some more Iā€™m no longer sure to what extent I agree.Ā
Now, the fact that hundreds of millions more people play football than rugby, or basketball, will certainly confer some level ofĀ ā€œelitenessā€, but only up to a certain point. Because football has been so popular for so long, the general standard of the play, relative to what it used to be, has had longer to improve. In the same way that if you transplanted a 100m runner from the Olympic final in the early 20th century to now they probably wouldnā€™t even qualify for the games, a footballer from the 80s would stand less of a chance of making it were they playing today. Many other sports donā€™t have that level of natural progression, afforded by decades of technical and tactical advancement - at least not globally.Ā
But the numbers argument only goes so far, as can be demonstrated by the Korean archers. Yes, there are more archers in Korea than anywhere else, relatively, giving them a higher chance of uncovering those with a natural aptitude, but the reason behind their bow and arrow dynasty is the specialisation. The hyper-detailed level of training and focus which allows them to be the best they can possible be.Ā
Now, archery is unique in that there is a theoretical maximum score (I understand that this is to some extent arbitrary, and related to the rules of the game as defined by some human being, semi-randomly, but it works in terms of this argument, because it gives a percentage score of how good the archers are based on the agreed-upon parameters of the sport), which, at the Olympics, is 720. The Olympic record is 700 (held by Korean Kim Woo-jin, giving an impliedĀ ā€œeliteness levelā€ of 97.2%.Ā
The best player in the history of football (donā€™t @ me) is Lionel Messi, and few would doubt that he operates at or above that level of perfection in his sport. But I also donā€™t think you could doubt that Novak Djokovic, or Serena Williams in her pomp, were similarly magnificent at tennis. Cyclists on the Tour De France put their bodies through more in three weeks than most people endure in a decade, and have every aspect of their training and diet strictly controlled so as to bring them as close to perfection as possible. There will certainly be a higher number of these elite performers in football, because there are a higher number of paying jobs for said elite performers, and because more people attempt to become elite performers, but I donā€™t think that it follows on from that that they are better at their sport than other elite athletes, all of whom have undergone years and years of specialised training to get them where they are.
Does any of this matter, in terms of how each sport should be enjoyed? Probably not, but its interesting to think about, and kind of awe-inspiring to try and appreciate just how good those at the top of their respective games are. And if there is some discrepancy in the level of eliteness between the different sports it doesnā€™t detract from the fact that they would handily dispatch any civilian challengers without breaking a sweat. The joy comes from watching people who are good at stuff doing that stuff - and, as evidenced by the crowds which gather for non-league football, it doesnā€™t matter whether or not they are at the absolute pinnacle of said stuff. Theyā€™re still going to be much better than the rest of us.Ā
Competitive quizzing is different from the activities previously mentioned in that any normal person can have a guess at pretty much any question, with a chance that theyā€™ll get it right. What sets the contestants apart on shows like University Challenge is the speed of their recall under pressure - the quickness of their knowledge as well as the knowledge itself. But there are plenty of armchair quizzers who think they could wipe the floor on the show, so just how good are the actual contestants? (Compared to an elite footballer or archer on an imaginary scale that accounts for relative skill in all disciplines?). I donā€™t know (and in case you hadnā€™t noticed by now Iā€™m just fascinated by people who are really good at anything, and wanted to share some of that fascination with you all), but Iā€™ll try and have a go at answering it anyway.Ā
So, the World Quizzing Championships have been dominated by British and Irish quizzers since its inception in 2003, with 16 of the 18 winners coming from either Britain or the Republic of Ireland (who have four wins courtesy of The Egghead Pat Gibson). This, in my mind, makes this neck of the woods comparable to South Korean archery. It is a hotbed of talent, and the infrastructure is in place to encourage and aid talent maximalisation. Indeed, if you scroll down the list of highest ranking players at the WQC in any given year you can see a significant cohort of UC alums, so clearly there are a number of elite quizzers who have passed through the show.Ā
This specialisation can be seen in microcosm with the preponderance of top-level quizzers produced by Oxford and Cambridge, who both have a long-standing culture of competitive quizzing far beyond other Universities. The debate is there to be had on the fairness of each institution having so many teams, but clearly they produce enough elite players to compete with far bigger Unis when entering as (sometimes tiny) colleges.Ā
In conclusion, I think it is pretty obvious that UC is a breeding ground for world-class quizzers, and though no one has won a World title straight off the bat after appearing on the show, there are top-50 and top 100 finishes abound, which is still greatly impressive, and helps to give an idea of just how good these students really are.Ā
Hoping to justify the 1000 words Iā€™ve just written about their exceptional talents are two teams from the London Business School and Hertford College, Oxford. The Oxford side have never made it beyond the second round, but LBS reached the semi-finals in 2006, their only previous appearance on the show. Anyway, there is quite literally no time for me to recite the rules; hereā€™s your first starter for ten...Ā
Paxman mentions that LBS were in the show in 2006, but doesnā€™t mention that they reached the semi final, which is lazy imo. A bunch of them are studying for MBAs, which makes sense. He doesnā€™t mention Hertfordā€™s previous appearances either, but thatā€™s more understandable.
Hertfordā€™s Hitchens takes the first starter with Kennedy, and the Oxonians added a full set of bonuses on words made up by authors - including a couple of educated guesses. LBS hit back with the next question, but can only manage one bonus on famous scientists. One of the two they miss is Rosalind Franklin, and Paxman teases them for not spotting an apparently obvious clue within the question.
The first picture round is on national emblems, and LBS are first to recognise that of Vietnam for the starter. They donā€™t know Laos or Belarus, but do know that Mozambique has a machine gun on its one. Butterworth then jumps the gun with argonĀ on the next starter, giving his answer just as Paxman says it in the question. Butterworth makes up for it with the music starter, recognising Fat Boy Slim before anyone else, and LBS know Primal Scream andĀ Wu Tang Clan too. Theyā€™re still fifty points behind though, and will need a big second half to turn things around.
This task gets more difficult for them, as Hitchens takes another starter. Lloyd adds a second in a row for Oxford and they are nearly one hundred points clear. LBS really need to get some points on the board, and Ruess duly obliges, knowing that there is a massive sculpture of a spider called Maman, which sounds needlessly scary, to the extent that Iā€™m not even going to google it.
The comeback is ended before its even begun as Oswald takes a starter for Hertford, which gives them the picture bonuses - the starter having been dropped by both teams. Lloyd produces another excellent guess of Reuben, demonstrating how useful it is to have vague knowledge as well as specific knowledge. This is one of probably five questions he has answered in a throwaway manner, but which turned out to be correct.Ā
By this point LBS seem to have accepted defeat. Ruess takes another starter, but there is little to no urgency on the bonus questions. Theyā€™re right, granted, to have none, they have no chance of winning, but if they gave it a go they might scrape a high scoring loser spot. Ruess is the only one who seems bothered, and bags himself ten more points. They have an amusing discussion about methods of poisoning in Agatha Christie novels (ā€™it was used as a curry ingredient?ā€™, Ruess wondered aloud, trying to figure out which spices could be poisonous, before Butterworth pointed out that it wasnā€™t something commonly used as a curry ingredient, prompting respectful mirth from the audience) on the bonuses, but still languish miles behind.Ā
Lloyd grabs the last starter of the night for Hertford, who win by eighty at the gong.
Final Score: London Business School 100 - 180 Hertford, Oxford
At the end, Paxman mentions Hertfordā€™s stellar guesswork, which means I wasnā€™t chatting nonsense (at least on that front, the jury is out on the rest of it), and says that theyā€™ve done a really good job. Incredibly effusive praise for a score of 180. He really is going soft in his old age.
Phew, that was a long one. If you made it through the intro you deserve a prize. And that prize is that you get to come back next week for the next episode of this blog!! Woop woop!Ā
And if this wasnā€™t quite enough UC content for you then you can subscribe for extra blogs on my Patreon, which features Retro Reviews from the 2015/16 series of the show. Ta x

I HAD A FUCKING EXPLOSION THE OTHER DAYā€”
So if you follow me you know that sometimes I make Royal Chaos content. If youā€™re also a history geek like me youā€™d know that most of the heroes from RC if not all are based off of real people.
Six out of eight of the most beautiful people of Chinese history are in the game, being Panā€™An, Song Yu, Prince Gao, who is also known as Lanling Wang for the men, and Diaochan, Zhaojun, and Yuhuan for the women.
The other two are missing: Wei Jie and Xi Shi.
But good news for you all because after some digging I found them. And they are SO CUTE! We need to make a petition for RC to put these characters into the game! I can DEFINITELY see the four most beautiful men and women having a connection with one another, like little hubs! šŸ˜« But I know what youā€™re thinking now, maybe some of you. Royal Chaos shouldnā€™t take from other games! Oh, but my dearest reader, you do know that some of Royal Chaosā€™s characters are in different games too, right? It wouldnā€™t be ā€œtaking from,ā€ now if they just stole the concept than yes it would be. Itā€™s not like Sega took Mario and co for the Olympic Games, and Vice versa. Itā€™s kind of like that in a sense. ā˜ŗļø
So, with no further adieu, I bring to you...
āœØHeadcanons on what class theyā€™d be in and what they can do, as well as background information!āœØ
Disclaimer: Iā€™m terribly sorry if I spell any of this wrong, Chinese is not my first language and itā€™s hard to spell out in English. Also, tw // war and suicide mentions, as well as descriptions of murder and violence, just in case...
Tumblr media
This is Xi Shi.
Her clothes actually remind me a lot of Diaochanā€™s with the colors, as well as the moon in the back, as per history, Diaochan was so beautiful the moon would shy away when being compared to her. Xi Shi on the other hand, was believed to be so beautiful that when fish would see her as they swam by, they would forget how to swim and sink to the bottom of whatever body of water they were swimming in. (Beauty can really kill huh?) Out of the four most beautiful women in ancient China, she was considered to be the first.
Her Background and Biography
Xi Shi was born in 506 BC on the nineteenth of July in Chinaā€™s Zhejiang Province in a small village called Xi Cun, or ā€œWest Village.ā€ Because a lot of people that lived there had ā€œShiā€ as a last name, and because she was born in the west, she was referred to as Xi Shi. She was born into a pretty ordinary household. Her father sold firewood for a living and her mother did silkwork. Ever since she was little, she would go out to this river to wash the silk that her mother had made. She lived during the Spring and Autumn Period, and within that time, China wasnā€™t a ā€œwhole country,ā€ it was made up of several kingdoms fighting against each other. Xi Shi is from the state of Yue, which had been vanquished by the state of Wu. After that the Emperor of Yue, Gou Jian, was forced to serve the Emperor of Wu, Fu Chai, for three years. Gou Jian then thought of a plan to defeat the Wu State and take power back. He knew that the Fu Chai was a sucker for pretty women, and he also knew that if Fu Chai was surrounded with beautiful women, he would be too distracted to work for his state. But for this plan to work, Gou Jian needed to find a woman that had stunning beauty that was willing to sacrifice herself for the better of the country. Gou Jian found Xi Shi and he picked her. He then asked his minister, Fan Li, to take Xi Shi to Fu Chai as a tribute gift from Yue. On the way however, she fell in love with him, as he was wise and kind. He reciprocated her feelings in turn. Now, they could have escaped this plan and thwarted it but they were both loyal to their country. So, they made a pledge of their undying love for one another in secret. When she was brought before Fu Chai, he was indeed entranced by her, spending more and more time with her, neglecting his duties. After some time, he realized that he should not have been bewitched by her, as the Yue Stare had become more powerful due to his neglectful behavior. Gou Jian had invaded the state of Wu and forced Fu Chai to commit suicide. When this happened, Xi Shiā€™s mission was complete. The ending that I choose to believe is that she reunited with Fan Li and she lived on with him after he quit his job as a minister. The other ending is really grim...
Her Class and Quality
Xi Shi could definitely be a scholar, an AOE especially. I can imagine that she could do something similar to that of Diaochan, despite her being a medic. She could impact the opposing formationsā€™ abilities to put damage on the formation shes defending using a debuff, much like Daji can do. I can see her being a Defense Hero and possibly having strength in Control for all these reasons, as well as real history, helping her state in the face of despair. She could be considered as a fabled hero, but could also be an epic hero considering the bloat of the fabled class making up mostly half of the hero cast as a whole.
Her Possible Abilities
Chant of Heroism
She can attack anywhere from 4 to 8 times descending on CRIT, dealing 60%+164 DMG to a random front enemy with each hit, lasting one round. Until three layers are tagged, the enemy will lose anywhere from 15 to 25 HP, decreasing DEF by 4%.
Promising Honor
50:50 chance of tagging a back or front target. Allies then force attention to the front if the tag is in the back, dealing 5% more damage. This tag cannot be dispelled for two rounds.
Her Preferred Gems and Treasure
Gems: DEF, ATK, ACC
Treasure: Primarily something with a DEF bonus, so the lamps, each one activating her Destiny ability. However, any other treasure that offers an ATK or RES bonus is also good.
Her Occupation
I can imagine her working in the Ministry of Defense as a General, much like Wen Ruyan. For her other occupation, she could be a poet of some kind, probably a primary or mid poet, something like that, or she could be a primary chess sage.
Hero Compatibility
She could work with other scholars that can do some damage, namely Song Yu and Ying Zheng. She could also work with medics depending on their skill set. Diaochan would be a prime choice.

Tumblr media
The guy on the right is Wei Jie.
Look at that cat! (Ā“āŠ™Ļ‰āŠ™`) But for real, this poor guy. He reminds me of the ā€œgentle giantā€ archetype. Not just because of his looks, no, heā€™s actually ill with some kind of disease. (I have a head canon that itā€™s AIDS/HIV, but I donā€™t have a lot of evidence to support that right now. All I know is that his immune system is very weak to infection and he has respiratory problems and itā€™s just that heā€™s very weak overall...) Despite his health however, heā€™s actually compared to Jade, being like a jade doll. Jade is very valuable in China and is considered to be a very precious stone, especially in the eyes of aristocrats and royalty. Out of the four most handsome men in ancient China, he was considered as the fourth.
His Background and Biography
(I had to use multiple resources for this, I couldnā€™t find a lot of information on him, so I had to get creative. Sorry!)
Wei Jie, like Panā€™An, also lived during the Xi Jin (Western Jin) Dynasty. He was born into a very wealthy household, and was recognized for his beauty alone at the age of five. His uncle, who also had extraordinary good looks, said that walking with his nephew was like ā€œhaving a gleaming pearl at my side.ā€ He had fans from far and wide, causing chaos and the forming of something along the lines of a twisted harem to form under his shadow. When Wei Jie grew up, this only got worse. Hoards of women would literally block the streets and chase after him because they all wanted him so badly, which this caused a lot of backlash onto his family. Because his family was aristocratic, they had to keep a sensible reputation. People were jealous of the Wei family because of the immense wealth and beauty that they all possessed. Luckily, Wei Jie couldnā€™t go out that often, as he doesnā€™t have a strong body, and has been ill since his infancy. He wasnā€™t allowed to go out during his childhood because of the fear that whatever ailment he had could spread. Because of this belief and the immense jealousy that others had, most of his family, with the exception of his father, fifth uncle, and cousin, were all murdered quite brutally. This lead him to be the young master of the Wei Manor. This pattern of not going out a lot and things continued on for some time. He would go out on occasion if he really needed something, and he didnā€™t necessarily like all the attention he brought to himself unknowingly. He grew easily overwhelmed by it and constantly sought to get away from the large groups of people that swarmed him. This anxiety and stress of attention exhausted him, and he actually passed from all that exhaustion. He was ā€œwatched to death,ā€ as people said. Poor guy... he just wanted to be alone... let us introverts be!
His Class and Quality
Oh, heā€™s a medic, for sure. I know also that he was an imperial physician in the game I found him from, but he only worked on commission, if that makes sense, like if people actually wanted to be treated by him. He would kind of be like a better version of Shizhen. Very agile and quick, but also the more you get to him, his attack rate can slowly increase. I can see him being some kind of control hero. Back Support too, that would make sense. So control + support. He would be in Fabled Class, definitely. Props to him!
His Possible Abilities
Jade Solstice
Chanting a medical spell from his calabash gourd, he can stun a front line enemy for one round, lowering 20 rage. If a critical is achieved, they will turn chaotic and attack other members of their formation for one round, taking away 15% of the enemies overall DEF and then giving it to his other formation members.
Internal Grace
Shielding himself using the gourdā€™s energy, he gains 10% RES. Any rage prompted attack he makes will grant him 2% more ATK bonus points for one round, increasing the formationā€™s overall CRIT by 10%. This can be layered twice and cannot be dispelled or immune to.
His Preferred Gems and Treasure
Gems: HP, CRIT, ATK
Treasure: To increase damage while keeping DEF, use the stamps. However, any CRIT or ATK bonus treasure is good too, just as long as it buffs his accuracy as well!
His Occupation
This is where it got tricky. I would assume he would work alongside Panā€™An in the Ministry of Rites where they would compose poems together. Itā€™s just that since he canā€™t actually go out too much thatā€™s where it gets a little complicated. He could probably act as some kind of moderator or something along those lines, something where he wouldnā€™t have to deal with people that much.
Hero Compatibility
He would need strong tanks to help him out. Prince Gao, Prince Jing, or even Xiang Yu would be good for him. He would also want heroes that would boost his abilities even more, gotta have that support, you know? Wu Zetian, Yuhuan, or Panā€™An would be good choices.
~~~~
Now for the final part...
āœØConnectionsāœØ
Xi Shi
I think theyā€™reā€™s already a connection that has Zhaojun, Diaochan, and Yuhuan in it. I would take that and add Xi Shi into the connection, but also bring her attributes to the table, in summary. What I mean by that is take her attributes and summarize them into one. So her strongest asset would be the fact that she could be an AOE with a control bonus. She could add ACC and DEF to the table to help with your formation if activated.
Wei Jie
Just like the ladies, I know thereā€™s already a connection with Panā€™An, Song Yu, and Prince Gao in it. Same deal, take it, put him in it, and add his summarized ability. He could be a Medic with strength in CRIT. So, he could bring CRIT to the table, obviously, as well as extra ATK buffs if activated.
~~~~
To conclude, *coughs as if to clear throat* Xi Shi, Wei Jie. We need to add them. The quartets arenā€™t filled up yet. Wouldnā€™t it be a surprise for them to finally come together in gorgeous matrimony as the queens they are? All heroes are queens. Plain and simple, not matter how awful their skill sets may be at times. (We see you, Shizhen. You matter, even though his skill set isnā€™t the best heā€™s still kinda great šŸ˜…)

How did you come up with Kotaro's zanpakuto? (i really love the bird theme of his attacks!) did you go through a lot of changes when coming up with names, abilities, and the general concept?
Tumblr media
{ ooc } bUCKLE UP KIDDOS ā€˜CAUSE ITā€™S TIME FOR SOME LONG OVERDUE GODDAMNED KŌTA META-
Kōtaā€™s zanpakutō was essentially conceived out of my own love for great big storms and heavy winds ā€“ and yes, I have a story to go with that! On one occasion many years ago, I hopped on a bus to visit a friend in town, but I was ill-prepared in that it was about to rain heavily and I had jack shit but a jacket. No raincoat and not even an umbrella. I thought I would make it there on time, buuuuut evidently, I did not. It already started raining and thundering hard by the time I walked out of the bus and had to walk a few blocks by myself.
And honestly, Plouton, looking back? I would not have changed a single little detail that day. Those several minutes I spent outside at the mercy of a live thunderstorm left such a huge impression on me! The incessant rain keeping me tethered to the ground, the sheer volume of deafening thunder cracking so hard and so loudly that the air around me quaked... pair that with times Iā€™ve enjoyed feeling myself at the mercy of heavy winds, or even the smell of the outside after rain falls...
Tumblr media
...pretty much all of that served as the biggest source of inspiration behind the wind and storm-oriented zanpakutō, and I wanted Kōta to embody that himself.
Besides, aside from Senna herself in Memories of Nobody, the Gotei 13 lacked a dedicated air-manipulating shinigami barring Kenseiā€™s unique take on the topic with Tachikaze, and weā€™ve only seen antagonists use this power (Dordoni of the Arrancar within the main story, Kariya if you want to go filler with the Bounts... whom Iā€™ve honestly forgotten about prior to creating Kōta WHOOPS) in the traditional sense. Not to mention, air as an element is SUPER malleable and thereā€™s so much you can do with it if you get creative?? So, given weā€™ve got some real powerful element-leaning shinigami already with water (lbr Kaien wouldā€™ve been a beast had he not been nixed), fire (Yama), snow (Tosh), and electricity (Sasakibe), why not keep adding to the idea?
With that, weā€™ve got the main concept locked down. Powers and general theme? Check. Bird-like zanpakutō spirit? Check. Defined attacks? ...noooooot quite there yetā€”in fact, those were a fairly late addition well after the blog reboot. As for what led to it, this never took off since the other mun blipped on an indefinite hiatus, but our thread would have likely turned into a fight thread between our muses and uh...
Tumblr media
...yeah, I realized named techniques are kind of an important thing to have, especially when writing within the context of an action-oriented series like Bleach. It wasnā€™t just about the cool factor, but having a readily available kit for reference (for myself, my writing partners, and folks reading in) was a must, not to mention it helped better define just what his main frigginā€™ weapon is capable of like those of most of the existing cast. In case a fight thread does come around in the future, itā€™d be an ideal thing to have ready to go and bring him further up to par with other fighters!
Just like that, I subjected myself to extra homework. Coming up with the moves themselves came to me simply enough, in seeing how air was played with in other media I was familiar with (key ones being Sonic the Hedgehog, The Legend of Zelda, and Avatar: The Last Airbender) and fashioning some of my own spins on top of some original ideas. I knew I wanted to lean hard on the bird motif since his zan spirit is a tengu, and given the wide variety of things the element of air/wind can do, I thought to make full connections between the two by theming each special move after certain species of bird! Creating those moves and naming them were the easy parts.
Naming them, that is, in English. Naming them all in Japanese was, by far, the hardest part. Why? Parce que je ne suis pas japonais, et aussi parce que je ne parle pas la langue, you see. On top of language barriers, the Japanese tongue operates on a whole other set of rules, compared to the Latin/Germanic-based ones Iā€™ve grown used to with English, French, and (at one point) German. I did take some Japanese classes as an elective back in university, but that was only in first year ā€“ my own understanding, as a result, was threadbare and surface level at best, so that was not going to get me anywhere. I did not want to half-ass it with romaji and I love Bleach too much to not want to do these ideas justice.

I am a stickler when it comes to detail and canon-compliance, so getting the naming right by abiding to the proper conventions as best as I possibly could became my topmost priority. Google Translate was not going to fly because lord knows itā€™s no good without proper context between wholly different languages in English and Japanese, and it only gets wilder once you throw Chinese into the mix, given Iā€™m supposed to use kanji. Thus, the name of the game here turned out to be ā€œreverse engineering,ā€ and I had to go in accepting I probably wasnā€™t going to get it 100% right the first time.
ā€œWhat rules do zanpakutō names and special attack names follow?ā€ ā€œHow do I apply on- or kun-reading in spelling out a group of certain kanji?ā€ ā€œWhere are the common denominators in those rules that I can identify?ā€ ā€œWhich language conventions have I already picked up from watching god knows how much anime over the years that I can replicate?ā€ ā€œWhich set of words best conveys this particular English word that has no direct Japanese translation?ā€ ā€œHow does [x] roll off the tongue? Does it sound right and fluid enough, or does it still feel super stilted and weird?ā€ It was a loooooooot of this until I was finally satisfied with each individual end result!
Tl;dr: Jisho.org and Wikipedia were godsends during this whole process. I also want to thank @tigrextoque who gave me some helpful pointers after the fact!

ALSO... the ones on the Battle Info page arenā€™t even all of the ones Iā€™ve thought about. Because Iā€™m a glutton for punishment apparently, I purposely went and submitted a request for a certain ask meme on an ask meme source blog, JUST so I could play around with more ideas that came or would come to mind. This time, however, it was through the form of COMBINATION ATTACKS (which, by virtue alone, are honestly peak awesomeness). Those that implicated other shinigami got new bird motifs to meld the aesthetics of both muses, while I did get a couple of Quincy ones (with their referenced attacks actually using romaji as a base! Whoo-hoo for saving me the effort!) as a bonus to mix things up!
Iā€™ll link them all right here (and later on the Battle Info page) for your convenience:
Noboru no mai, Shiro Fukurō (éØ°ć®čˆžćƒ»ē™½ę¢Ÿ, Rising Dance, Snowy Owl), with Rukia Kuchiki

Yes, ā€œFlying Batteryā€ was a deliberately written Sonic the Hedgehog reference. No, I will never apologize for that.
...might I reblog that meme again in the future though...?
...probably not right away.
Tumblr media
So, uh... Plou, I should probably apologize for giving you a lot more than you likely bargained for, but hey, I just didnā€™t want to leave any stone unturned! Thank you so much for sending me your three questions, I enjoyed writing these little deep dives into my Bleach OC, and thanks for taking interest in Kōta! I hope all of my responses have been both enlightening and to your satisfaction.

The Assassin Class - Fire Emblem Three Houses
To kick off this project weā€™re starting with a class that I believe is a little underwhelming: the sword and bow specialist Advanced Class.Ā
To qualify as Assassin, the game recommends that you have a B rank in swords and a C rank in bows, but you can get away with less, making this a fairly easy class to qualify in, even if the unit in question lacks a strength in swords and/or bows. if youā€™re playing with any semblance of optimization, every unit in your army should have an iron bow or something comparable to fall back on for chip damage and linked attacks. This makes the C rank recommendation for bows almost negligible, meaning the only thing you need to focus on would be swords.Ā
Analysis
Upon passing the Assassin exam, the qualifying unit is guaranteed a minimum of 17 strength, 14 speed and 12 dexterity. When you choose to put the unit in question in the Assassin class, they are granted a class bonus of 5 speed, 3 dexterity and 1 luck. This is the highest class speed boost in the game, tying the Falcon Knightā€™s mounted speed, without the demerit for dismounting. The dexterity bonus is respectable as well.Ā
The Assassin has a base 6 move that, being a thief-type infantry unit, can ignore many terrain obstacles to movement. This is honestly the best that a non-mounted unit can get, making it competitive with cavalry, but inferior to fliers. If you lack the will or ability to train a unit to be a mounted class, this is a very easy to acquire certification that can keep a unit relevant to your more mobile units.Ā
The faults of the Assassin become a little more apparent when you look at its Class and Mastery Skills and compare it to alterative Advanced Classes with similar weapon types.Ā
The Assassin comes with Swordfaire, Locktouch and Stealth. Swordfaire is unfortunate because swords are probably the worst weapon type in Three Houses unless your name is Byleth and/or youā€™re using Thunderbrand. The biggest thing that swords have going for them is 1-3 range on a Levin Sword+ for magic-focused units with decent sword proficiency. Assassin doesnā€™t hurt your magic, but itā€™s far what I would call a natural choice for a mage.Ā
Locktouch is pretty useless due to the abundance of gold in Three Houses and the ability to buy keys. You can get some use out it it with your decent mobility, but itā€™s honestly better on the Trickster class due to foul play.Ā
Stealth is probably the selling point of Assassin. It will let the Assassin not be targeted by enemy units so long as they are not the sole target in the enemyā€™s threat range. This is good for providing linked attacks to more imposing combat units without putting yourself in danger. Unfortunately Trickster also does this, reducing the effect of the main selling point.Ā
The classā€™s mastery skills are the Assassination sword combat art, which is bad, and the Lethality skill which gives you a percentage to instant kill an enemy based on a quarter of your dexterity per hit. Itā€™s inconsistent, but could be fun when combined with a brave weapon or the Swordmasterā€™s Astra combat art.Ā
The offensive power of the Assassin is lower than the Swordmaster or Hero and is considerably lower than the Sniper. As the best way to use an Assassin is with bows, in my opinion, the Sniper is almost always a better pick.Ā
The Assassin has a 20% growth bonus to both Speed and Dexterity. This is actually pretty high and can help shore up deficiencies in those stats, especially in normal or hard. On maddening, this classā€™s only real appeal as far as Iā€™m concerned is Stealth.Ā
Good Assassins
In my opinion, Claude probably gets the most out of the class due to his strength in swords and bows and his dexterity being the highest in the game. This makes Claude the best choice for the brave/Astra Lethality trick. Claude also automatically qualifies as a flier in part 2, meaning that you donā€™t need to worry about training his flying to keep him relevant. You can instruct him in riding instead in order to get him Dexterity +4 and Movement +1. Claude also gets the Sacred Weapon the Sword of Belgatia and the Heroā€™s Relic Failnaught, a sword and bow respectably. Claude also gets Pass in part 2.Ā
Ignatz makes a good assassin, especially with a longbow. For optimal use, youā€™d want him to follow Raphael around for their special linked attack bonus. Stealth will keep Ignatz alive and linked attacks will help shore up Ignatzā€™s potentially middling damage. The same logic applies to Ignatzā€™s closest equivalents in the other houses, albeit to an arguably lesser extent. BernadettaĀ brings Stealth and Persecution Complex to the table, where Ashe has the redundant Locktouch and should be classed into Assassin only to survive Blue Lionā€™s Hunting at Daybreak.Ā
Hilda (and to a lesser extent Seteth) make good Assassins due to their special linked attacks with Balthus and Claude (or Flayn) as well as their adjacent opposite-gender skills Advocate and Guardian. Hilda can shore up her dexterity, should she wind up a little statscrewed by classing Assassin. Iā€™d say both are probably better in more aggressive classes though, but additionally deploying Hilda and Sylvain or Seteth and Leonie could add to the novelty.Ā
Byleth can make a good Assassin due to Professorā€™s Guidance, and their strength in swords offsetting the challenge that Byleth can pose to train, especially your first playthrough.Ā
The non-Claude sword and bow kids: Yuri, Felix and Petra tend to be pretty strong units in other classes and hence I donā€™t really recommend that you class them Assassin, despite it being really easy. Do it if for whatever reason itā€™s your only option at level 20, as despite being a middling choice in the tier, itā€™s better than all of the lower-level options and is endgame ready.Ā
Conclusion
Overall, Assassin is definitely a class and is definitely an option for Golden Deer, less so for the other houses. #fearthedeer If you have a plan going it, itā€™ll probably do what you want it to, if not, it may underwhelm.Ā
Iā€™m doing a bunch of these when I have time. Hereā€™s a link to the master post.

Fallout: A Post-Nuclear Role-Playing Game (1997)
Tumblr media
The Fallout series is currently kind of a big deal, but to date I think the very first game has the strongest atmosphere out of all of them. From the start, this game did many things right and expanded the way choice and consequence figured into the RPG genre.
I recommend playing it with the Fallout Fixt mod.
Summary
Fallout is, unlike the more modern games in the series, an isometric RPG with turn-based combat and a much heavier inspiration from tabletop roleplaying games.
Rather than using a fantasy setting as is the standard for this type of game, Fallout takes place in a post-apocalyptic world with a retrofuturistic aesthetic and a more mature atmosphere. This automatically made it stand out from the crowd, and then the gameā€™s approach to quest design and character-building solidified its place as a classic.
Freedom
In terms of player freedom, there are few games that manage to even reach the same level as this one.
When designing Fallout, the developers tried to include at least three potential solutions to many of the problems the player may encounter, using the gameā€™s robust character creation system to allow all kinds of characters to have options for how to proceed.
For example, an early quest involves rescuing a girl from a raider gang. Your options include fighting your way in and out of the place, using stealth to sneak to where she is and pick (or blow up) the lock, use your speech skill to intimidate the raider into releasing the her, purchasing her freedom, defeating the raider leader in a one-on-one unarmed fight, or even impersonating the leaderā€™s father for her release.
To be clear, not all quests have quite this many options, but thereā€™s still usually a few, including some that may not be obvious when playing certain kinds of characters.
This famously extends to the end of the game, where it is possible to overcome the final challenge without engaging in combat.
On top of quests having multiple solutions, the world itself is completely open, gated only partially by the fact that certain areas are populated by more powerful monsters (and even then, it is possible to avoid them).
While thereā€™s never enough options and I can think of a couple of places where I wish I could have had different ones (such as during the very last conversation in the game), the game is generally doing a lot of things right on this front, especially for its time.
Many of the gameā€™s factions and settlements also have various different endings depending on the playerā€™s actions.
Character Creation/Customization
This is another aspect of the game that won over many RPG fans. The character creation uses the SPECIAL system, invented for this series following licensing issues with GURPS.Ā
It is a versatile system with three main components: Your SPECIAL stats (Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, and Luck), your skills (three of which can be tagged at the start of the game, gaining a bonus and increasing faster), and your traits.
Traits in particular were optional features that would grant your character both a bonus and a penalty. For example, the Fast Shot trait makes some of your attacks faster (consuming less action points) but at the cost of being unable to make targeted shots.
And it does not stop there. Fallout hadĀ ā€œPerksā€ that could be gained every 3 levels, which could grant a variety of rewards, some of them very significant. For example, the Better Criticals perk makes your critical hits more devastating, sometimes even enabling them to become instant-kill attacks regardless of the targetā€™s remaining HP. From what I understand, this perk system may have been the genesis of D&Dā€™s feat system too.
However, the real strength of this character system lies in how the game implements it. Both your stats and your skills will affect what dialogue options you have available and what actions you can successfully take in the game world.
This might sound like it should be the default for any RPG, but you might be surprised to know how many games, even otherwise very good ones, donā€™t seem to even try to implement something like this.Ā
Many other games, even today, donā€™t let you specialize your character in any way outside of combat. All characters have access to all options and your stats donā€™t affect anything but combat.
Itā€™s not all positive, however. There are some balance issues to be found.
In particular, Intelligence and Agility are overpowered, as is the Gifted trait. There are also many skills, traits, and perks that are of marginal usefulness at best. Skills like Throwing, Traps, or Gambling (for example) just donā€™t come up very often or provide meaningful advantages over other skills even accounting for the fact that a pretty low gambling skill is enough to gain essentially infinite money.
Story/Setting
This is really the part that draws people to the series in the first place. Thereā€™s just not that many post-apocalyptic RPGs out there (Wasteland and UnderRail come to mind).
The story is relatively simple. Nuclear war has largely destroyed civilization, your ancestors survived by hiding in an underground shelter called a Vault, but the water processing chip broke and now you have 150 days to find a replacement before your entire community dies of dehydration.
The search of this replacement has you leave the vault for the first time in your life and explore the wastes, and the many diverse communities that have begun to grow and rebuild in it.
Many mutated creatures inhabit post-nuclear California, and you soon discover an even greater threat in the horizon. However, this is not an RPG about dungeons and monsters. Most of your time will be spent in various settlements, dealing with other humans.
Immersion
Pretty good overall, though still not on the level as some of my other favorites like Ultima 7 or Gothic 2. The game has day/night cycles and a few simple NPC schedules that help add some life to it, but for the most part what carries this aspect is the gameā€™s solid worldbuilding and the relative reactivity of its setting.
One areas that detracts from the gameā€™s immersion somewhat is the limited animations. For example, NPCs donā€™t actuallyĀ ā€œsleepā€ in their beds, they only stand next to them at night.
Some NPCs donā€™t seem to have schedules at all either, remaining roughly in the same state and location throughout the day.
However on the net Iā€™d say this is still a rather immersive game, especially if you can apply a bit of your imagination to make up for the lack of animations and background details (some more text descriptions of certain locations could have helped here probably).
One place I particularly liked the first time I played was Junktown, as a couple of quests and events there felt very spontaneous to my then-young mind.
Gameplay
As previously explained, there are a variety of non-combat options throughout the game. In particular I really like how the dialogue works, especially when you compare it to the approach taken in Fallout 3, Fallout 4, and even New Vegas.
In the first two Fallout games, you do not get a [Speech] tag pointing to the optimal dialogue options. You have to think for yourself about what the most persuasive thing to say is, and what your skill does is make the option show up at all. If your skill is not high enough then the option will be not only unavailable but hidden.
I prefer this to the game outright telling you that one of your skills is tied to a dialogue option, as in practice it ends up being the same as marking that option as the correct one most of the time.
And then thereā€™s the combat. A lot of people donā€™t seem to like it, but I actually think it works fine as long as you set the speed to max as the animations are a bit slow by default.
Besides the speed issue (which is easily fixed), the main complaint about the combat is that it is overly simple. This is not entirely wrong, as even though there is a wide variety of weapons to play with there is not actually that much variety in combat actions: Move, attack, targeted attack, open inventory (for healing), and sometimes burst mode make up over 95% of what you will be doing from start to finish.
There are still some tactics involved in positioning yourself and taking cover from enemy fire, as well as making good use of targeted shots to cripple the enemy. However, the fact that you have no manual control over your party members limits this front. Party members in general are both unintelligent and quickly left behind in the base game, as they donā€™t improve or equip better armor. The mechanics for equipping them are also rather janky.
However, combat does have its positives too. The idea of targeted shots is great, as are the accompanying critical descriptions. The animations and sound effects also make combat extremely satisfying, every hit that lands seems to carry a real weight to it.
There is also some nice variety to the death animations. Where more recent games in the series largely just have peopleā€™s body parts explode or instantly transform them into piles of ashes/goo, Fallout 1 and 2 feel like they have much more in this department.
Aesthetics
While the non-combat animations are not too good, there is a lot to like about the general art style of the game, from the architecture to the incredible talking heads various NPCs have.
The atmosphere of the game is also amazing, not only due to the way it looks but also because of the dark and ominous soundtrack (give me this over 50s music any day) that helps make the world feel appropriately desolate and perilous.
Even just the gameā€™s intro shocked a generation and clearly marked Fallout as something dark and different.
However, this gameā€™s atmosphere goes beyond sight and sound. The gameplay helps to heighten it. Combat is very lethal even if not always difficult, and the lack of clear initial directions beyondĀ ā€œTry Vault 15ā€³ also helps the players feel appropriately lost until they find a lead.
The talking heads in particular have aged extremely well. I would say they even look better than a lot of modern RPG graphics.
Accessibility
The same lack of direction I just praised might be off-putting for some, and while the game is mechanically very simple there is no tutorial. This alone can make some modern players fail to understand some of the core mechanics.
The quest log is also rather non-descriptive, so it can be easy to lose track of some details unless one takes some additional notes outside the game.
However, the gameā€™s manual is not only complete and written for people new to RPGs, itā€™s also quite fun to read. A lot of people these days just donā€™t seem to think of the manual as something they should look at, but it helps to keep in mind that older games typically require it.
Donā€™t let the size of it discourage you either. You donā€™t need to read the whole thing at once and a lot of it is fluff or things you might already know from other games (like how to load or save your game). Just look at the index and see what might be good to know from the start.
Conclusion
It should be no surprise when I say that this is a game entirely worth playing, whether you are an existing fan of the series or not. Like many of the other games that I have reviewed and will review in the future, this one has great historical significance on its own on top of having many positives even when compared to the more modern games in the series, especially in terms of aesthetics.
Furthermore, the game is pretty short. It can easily be completed in about 20 hours or less for a first playthrough, and yet it offers so much more than that due to the many options and replayability it provides.
There is really no other game quite like this. Not even the few other post-apocalyptic RPGs that exist, not even other games in the same series (including Fallout 2). I would call this one of my favorites.

here are the sprites on their own! not all of them, but there are way too many to fit up there. iā€™m leaving the rest under the cut.
others include significantly asymmetrical sprites, as well as a bonus set. 8)
these donā€™t really clarify their relative heights. they are not adjusted to the bottom pixel i actually drew for sure, thatā€™s not how i aligned them. i actually have a guideline in the file, but. i canā€™t really show that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
above are the regular sprites. it took ages to figure out what i wanted to do with virgilā€™s plaid, but it turned out going simple with it was the best plan. also it looked very bad until i figured out to use values correctly.
also, while weā€™re at it, i can tell you some things i changed between projects! this is a remaster of my last attempt at pixelology, and i do Ā believe itā€™s an overall improvement.
virgilā€™s plaid, yeah, changed that, but also the colour of his hair, because the old one blended too much with his skin. glad that happened to virgil, because i was trying to keep the hair highlights the same for everyone, with differently-tinted shadows. i did give him a bat instead of the wings this time, because a, he seems like a bat kind of guy, and b, the wings sucked and i donā€™t think i could improve them. like, the best thing about those wings is that they were the ace flag colours, and since his general colour scheme is already like that, itā€™s not a spectacular saving grace. they also made the frame fit weird, but i donā€™t like drawing wings absurdly small, like why bother? i alos tried to be a bit more competent with the jacob lines in his shading. those are an indicator of fear so of course i wanted to keep them included, but last time i feel like i didnā€™t do great, and this time i think i improved. especially on the legs. it is kind of a pain how there are adjacent sections where the shadows are done in the same colour, but. thatā€™s really who virgil is, letā€™s be real. wouldnā€™t be the same without the all-black clothes.
also, pattonā€™s different skin tones were really bad, you could barely see the shadows, so i changed them. his overall shape also did not work, so this time i stylized it a bit more to fit with the pixels. also i gave him a different weapon. hopefully itā€™s still funny in its incongruity!
roman had very little change. like, i really like his original sprite! i did change some of the gold details, but the biggest thing is probably the pants. theyā€™re white with a red stripe because, a, it looks very good, and b, it set up a parallel with remus.
and remus. most obviously in the first one, his different head angle super didnā€™t work. it was very bad! which, in his case doesnā€™t automatically rule it out, but this one looks way better next to the majority of these. i mentioned relative heights earlier and this one should actually be the same height as roman, you can align them by their chins. aside from that, i added a lot mor detail to his ruffles, i tried my best to maintain clarity on his torso, i got the sleeves just plain wrong, but it looks fine, and it happened to be very good art that led me astray on that, so whatever. i feel like his morningstar might have gotten worse between versions, but what can you do. maybe i accidentally put it at a slightly harder angle to make look nice. whatever.
logan! i donā€™t think iā€™m doing these in any real order, sorry. like patton, his shape has been changed to be more stylized to fit the pixel thing. like, a realistic taper on the legs, as it turns out, looks pretty bad! exaggerate it or make it just straight lines and it is better. i feel like i very much improved his hair, and i also added the belt that he wears which i forgot last time.
lastly, janus. well, lastly for now, but the next one wonā€™t be a remaster of anything. i gave him his canon weapon instead of snakes, which, not sure what i was thinking gameplay-wise for those. [thatā€™s a lie, i was thinking nothing about gameplay because i am no gamemaker. iā€™m not even an animator, much as iā€™d like to be.] when i made his last sprite, i forgot the lining of his cape is yellow. also last time i had not seen the magnificent longer cape from the game sections of svsr, which as iā€™ve mentioned elsewhere i am never letting go of, ever. so that features here. it kind of blends with the backgrounds i use for the vs character selection screens, but i donā€™t think thatā€™s necessarily a downside. aside from that, i did remove some scales from his right hand because we have now seen it, and itā€™s proven bereft of those. as youā€™ll see in a second though, fortunately no such thing can be said of his legs. nor upper arm.
now for the bonus set. you may recognize this theme if youā€™ve followed this project awhile. 8)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
some notes on these specifically:
-this is simply a complete set based on janusā€™ bonus sprite from the original project this is remastering.
-i tried to base the colours on their onesies. that proved harder than expected. remus and janus have no shown onesies, but
>i had janusā€™ previous sprite on hand, so that was him taken care of.
>virgilā€™s onesie didnā€™t really have multiple colours, so itā€™s just different shades of black, with some grey thrown in because white is already a base colour.
>loganā€™s, oh boy, i thought i remembered it having two colours, but i was wrong, it is just blue. and white, but again, that doesnā€™t work. so i gave him a couple of shades.
>pattonā€™s, i didnā€™t really want to use grey as a colour, but it actually had two others, they were just in trace amounts. it was okay.
>remus. nghh. i wanted to use like, an inverted version of romanā€™s colours, but it turns out blue and yellow inverted is yellow and blue. so i used the orthogonal colours instead, and iā€™m not really sure it was a good look.
-aside from colour schemes, each of these has its own little variation, because i felt like having fun. aside from any kind of socks/leggings, because whatever, those are pretty variable anyway, each has one detail different. from most to least noticeable as i see it:
>patton has pants instead of a skirt. i just thought the look suited him better. the thing about patton is i always imagine him in Dad Fashion, which doesnā€™t have a ton of skirts in my mind. maybe thatā€™s just my dad, but eh. i do think itā€™s a good look but i didnā€™t draw it very well.
>roman has a different crown. need i explain further? adding the othersā€™ crowns was a bit of a pain considering how they interact with hair that isnā€™t drawn in anime style.
>virgilā€™s might not be too noticeable on its own, but the leggings kind of direct the eye there. heā€™s wearing his own boots instead of any variety of sailor scout ones. mostly because they are much, much cooler.
>logan has a different collar. closer to his usual polo than... whatever the sailor collar is actually called. he also might not have the same choker necklace as everyone else, but mostly you just canā€™t tell. still tied with a weird bow thing, though. how the hell do those bow accessories work?
>janus has a longer cape. again, need i explain further? heā€™s also the only one with a magical girl wand, because his colour scheme* was the most permitting and i really wanted to draw coily ribbons.
>remus is kind of like virgil with the leggings, but again, those donā€™t count, and with remus they draw attention away from his change. anyways, the different thing about his outfit is the sleeves. i only noticed long after i was out of the pixel stage that none of the sleeves are accurate, but his are even more not accurate, they do the poof thing. also his necklineā€™s a bit lower, but i mean, how could i not?
-i might assemble a full scene with these, if anybody asks. or nobody, i kinda just want to. itā€™s not too much trouble, but it wonā€™t be animated this time, that took ages and i donā€™t think it even turned out well. i gotta find somewhere to actually get taught things about animation, though it also just does not gel with my medium.
-i canā€™t for most of these, but for janus i can talk about some improvements. his crown looks more visible, though that might just be compared to this side of his face. the skirt is not better and might be worse to be honest. also the bow on his chest. other than that itā€™s definitely better for the gloves actually being incorporated in this one.
*i do actually have set colour schemes for these. i tried to even limit the number of colours for each one. that said, most of them have exactly 17 instead of the nice power of two 16, and one of them couldnā€™t even fit that bill.

Goblin Reviews 46: Eventide
With a focus on creatures of every type combination, but required to follow up on the tribal themes of Lorwyn, Eventide getsā€¦ weird. Eventide introduces a new sort of goblin, the Hobgoblin, and alsoā€¦ Stream Hopper. I still donā€™t know what Stream Hopper is.
Tumblr media
Hatchet Bully is repeatable, expensive removal, which makes it super strong in limited and utterly useless in constructed. Even just having Hatchet Bully kill itself to deal out 6 damage split as you choose is really good in a limited environment, and the fact that you can use those counters for other synergies or put them on creatures you just donā€™t need anymore means this is never going to be cut from your limited pool if youā€™re in red. On the other hand, itā€™s so expensive and so slow to do anything that itā€™s never going to be played in a sixty card deck, let alone a Commander deck.
Tumblr media
Hearthfire Hobgoblinā€™s an old buddy of mine. His nameā€™s Dak. Hereā€™s the thing about Double Strike: Itā€™s really good. Even when doing nothing else, Hearthfire Hobgoblin is effectively a 4/2 for 3, which is entirely draftable, and thereā€™s so many, many ways to take advantage of Double Strike, be it equipment, auras, or just pump spells. In limited, itā€™s not hard to make this guy really good. In constructed, itā€™s not actually that hard to benefit from him, either, but thereā€™s better double strikers out there, and honestly, having white as its other color really held it back in standard, when most of the other goblins were Black or Green. Thereā€™s some commander decks that can make use of him, but every year more solid red and white doublestriking creatures get printed, and he falls just a bit behind the curve.
Tumblr media
Hobgoblin Dragoon is a 1 power creature for 3 mana. This thing is garbage. Look, I get it, you donā€™t have that many small fliers in red, but 1 power is not enough to stop serious flying threats, and first strike does basically nothing when your toughness is higher than your power anyway. Hobgoblin Dragoon is weak and useless and is only worth playing in limited if youā€™ve got multiple copies of Scourge of the Nobilis or other cards that really reward you playing cards that are both red AND white. On its own, this card is painfully weak, even for a common.
Tumblr media
Outrage Shaman is going to hit for 5-ish in a normal limited game, and thatā€™s good enough if your deck is red heavy, with Eventide limited frequently allowing you to play decks where almost every card counts as red. The 2/2 body is weak, but something. Itā€™s not the best removal out there, but itā€™s playable. In 60 card, itā€™s just too weak when compared to other removal spells, and youā€™re not likely to get devotion high enough. In Commander, itā€™s easy to get high devotion, but the 2/2 body is basically irrelevant at that point. I could see running it in Purphoros when youā€™re already building to maximize your devotion to red, but I wouldnā€™t waste time with it in anything else.

Stream Hopper is justā€¦ wow. Thatā€™s a goblin. Okay. So, a 1/1 for 1 isnā€™t anything special, and the ability to gain flying isā€¦ fine but not great. This is limited filler if Iā€™ve ever seen it. As with many cards in this half-block, being both red and blue at one mana is actually a huge boon for other cards you might play, so while Iā€™d never recommend picking this highly, once you have Cackleburr or Shrewd Hatchling it suddenly becomes much more desirable. And poking in for flying damage is never bad in draft or sealed.
Tumblr media
Swirling Sprigganā€™s ability, while very interesting, never seems to be that useful in its format. See, most of the ā€˜color mattersā€™ stuff in Shadowmoor or Eventide is either on cast or based on mana cost, and while there are things like the Leiges and the Mentors, if youā€™re running them itā€™s generally because your deckā€™s already focused on that. Swirling Sprigganā€™s a cool idea, but it mostly amounts to ā€˜Target creature gets +1/+1 until end of turn, use this ability once per turn, and only for a few creatures in your deck, and only if you have a lord out.ā€ Factoring that in with its size and cost, itā€™s really not worth drafting unless youā€™re already in on ā€œgreen matters.ā€ Thereā€™s probably some commander out there that can abuse this ability, but otherwise Swirling Sprigganā€™s just not very useful.

Rise of the Hobgoblins has the frequent problem of X spells that itā€™s always overcosted. Thereā€™s really no mana cost at which playing Rise and getting a few goblins is better than playing a spell that normally costs that much. This is pretty standard for an X spell, but as with Goblin Offensive itā€™s just rarely worth it to spend all that mana for goblin tokens. The question of First Strike is a more interesting one, as the mana investment isnā€™t a huge issue (though it is an annoying one), and First Strike can be really useful in a lot of formats. In limited, when decks tend to be more defensive than usual, I honestly think this card is strong. Even playing it without any goblins gives a buff to your team thatā€™s really hard to remove, and late game getting 4 goblins for 6 mana, while sub par, is still useful.Ā  In 60 card, this is just too inefficient at everything. In Commander, thereā€™s a number of commanders who can take advantage of this. Winona likes any method of getting non-human tokens, Iroas is happy to get devotion thatā€™s unlikely to go away, and Argus Kos turns these little guys into 3/3s. Others might want to play it more as a way to reliably have First Strike and just consider the goblins to be gravy.

Story and writing-related transparency update and my many shames...
The Question on Everyoneā€™s Mind
ā€œHey you havenā€™t updated No Stars over Uptown in almost a year...ā€
Hmm, I hate it when youā€™re right. (This section has been rewritten ad-nauseam to curb back the bitchiness by the way)
So back in early/mid 2018, the idea was to divorce Uptown from a person who influenced it (and myself) heavily. She was my most important audience member, the closest friend I ever had, and unfortunately someone who used her power to bully, ostracize, and hurt others with my help. I cut contact when the hurt + some self-awareness finally reached me. Apologies were made and I feel like my work will never be done with it, but there was still Uptown.
Between censored comments, entirely recasting Axelā€™s save, different plot threads, and a load of disclaimers, there was nothing that would scrub her influence from the story. There was no way to cleanly drop everythingĀ because of how deep her influence went. It disgusted me to look back at it, and I had to private the blog because I feared what it endorsed, even if just in the past.
I pulled back from that sims writing community. I had its main thread on the Official Forums removed too (I guess if that was a mystery to anyone). It was a surrender that I never wanted to do, but I had it in my mind that if I was gone, then she wouldnā€™t be there either. Uptown became this cursed item, and as I quietly retired it, I noticed that she went quieter too. Not gone, but enough to make me sleep easier at night and even occasionally say hello to old friends.
And I hope deep in my heart that no one else is getting hurt in my place, but now this is gonna haunt me all day huh!
The two paths forward...
1) Complete Uptown rewrite that Iā€™ve been threatening everyone with all year. While it wonā€™t ever be clean because I canā€™t undo time, I do have a sound outline for a story that is much more true to my actual vision and how Iā€™ve evolved, with a few necessary boundaries in place that are going to be there for all stories moving forward: no more casting calls and no more collaborative efforts. I am not going to open myself up to this happening again, even if the people have changed.
2) Same as above, but I continue the original Uptown as a favor to loyal readers alongside the rewrite. I would try to put the effort into it that I initially did, but with no promises on an update schedule and no advertising. I did ask myself ā€œis there Patreon but without pledging money, just the private posts functionā€ but it could operate as part of a private forum, a members-only part of a website, etc.
Also readers of the original would be beholden to a rule of ā€œdonā€™t spoil the rewrite for new readers, cā€™mon guysā€. I mean, not really, but it is a good courtesy to extend to people.
Priority on this isnā€™t high but you at least will see what is!
I will probably make the blog public again either way due to the many broken links on my Tumblr but weā€™ll see. There are other things to deal with as I shall list!
Where Lifeā€™s Been Regardless
Been spending more time with my grandpa every weekend. Lifeā€™s pretty good and heā€™s warming up to my dogs.
Shiny New Webbed Site
Cucumber Fields Forever is a site I own now. We have a full domain, cucumberfieldsforever.com, a blog with one post, and the framework needed to host stories the way I want to and still through WordPress. The functionality of likes, comments, and following should still be the same but you know...Iā€™ll take feedback too...
The main blog still has an undefined purpose though I do have drafts sitting around about:
The maybe/maybe not hoax band that was on the Metal Archives and the history of Funeral Doom Metal.
The curious case of when Sims 4 babies get their genetics and my only collaboration (read: was talking about it with a friend and might quote her if needed, itā€™s actually a bit of a doozy)
Amazon.comā€™s fake dried udon noodles, an actual issue by the way.
Things Iā€™m reading! (Thisā€™d be a monthly feature if so)
For the sake of unity, I am thinking of solutions for hosting old and shameful content there including Uptown and for the real fans in my followers feed, Eight Cicadas...a world I totally have plans for too (not really). I donā€™t want them to be front-and-center, and thatā€™s why I mentioned forums/members-only content. I finally have that power! Maybe.
Ooooh but what are the costs? Not too much to handle, thatā€™s what. šŸ˜‰ (Like really, I donā€™t need any hand-wringing about this, I can manage my finances)
Project Queue (In Order of Confirmedness)
Outrun the Scythe:Ā have you seen me post out-of-context Sims 3 pictures? Did you want more? Did you hope it was Linda in Custody? If the answers are yes, yes, and ā€œmeh, whatever you wantā€, then youā€™re in luck.
Outrun the Scythe is a Sims 3-based tale of a young gay man and his zombie grandma, as they are both offered separate roles of being the undying intermediaries between the world of humans and the influence of a race of space daemons. Itā€™s pretty familiar if youā€™ve been following me pre-Uptown, taking some cues from stories Iā€™ve kept under lock and key like Eight Cicadas, The Chains of Lyra, and the not-so-locked-up Ironstar Immortals (of which Outrun is just the direct sequel to sans any retconning...ah the smell of early 2013 and performative heterosexuality)
Ah, back to my roots.
Itā€™s a hybrid of gameplay, story, and lore about my little race of daemons with a lot of my own idiosyncrasies that Iā€™m not really ashamed of: basing it off a super-polarizing Sims 3 challenge from a site I moderate, using a lot of EAā€™s pre-made townies and their genes, lots of unnecessary posemaking, stupid references. Itā€™s a comfort to have in my roster.
While the first few chapters are in the middle of revision, I have around six in the queue and will be making this public when I have ten. Iā€™m guessing December then?
Undocumented Black Widow Challenge: I just did this for fun/forum kudosĀ (yes, in fact I have joined many forums), there was going to be a short story but it was quickly becoming something against my code of ethics. I mean, sims die and all. (read: I had to choose betweenĀ ā€œheterosexual widowā€ andĀ ā€œwidow with some same-sex marriages that still end in tragedy, reinforcing negative stereotypes to the public for the sake of me not getting bored and detached during gameplayā€ so there were no good choices. Except for her affair with the mailwoman, 10/10) I hope to finish this before October ends and get my medal on Boolprop, Iā€™m pretty far through it all. I might upload the sims involved anyways. This is for TS4.
I mentioned it because itā€™s keeping me busy. But not for long!
NaNoWriMo 2020:Ā Dipping my toes into that again! Itā€™s not sims-related, just a tale of lesbians, nosy neighbors, a haunted beach house, and some light murder and kidnapping. And I actually got my brother to scout out locations for me this weekend. If thereā€™s any demand, I can share chapters as the rough drafts are finished, especially for the sake of proofreading.
Not saying Iā€™m publishable, but wouldnā€™t it be nice? Will keep me occupied for much of November.
UntitledĀ ā€œDear Diaryā€ Challenge:Ā Tired of feeling left out of the fun on the Boolprop forums, theirĀ ā€œDear Diaryā€ challenge was the one that appealed to me the most on first glance. Why? Probably once I found an idea that let it be set in the early/mid-2000ā€²s to begin with and explore some interesting characters through diary entries (which I have mixed feelings on as a literary device but I think thatā€™s just me sayingĀ ā€œwell I didnā€™t like Draculaā€, yes you get bonus points for writing it like a diary)
Also writing is the one skill Iā€™m good at across multiple games. Wanna hear me bitch about the cooking skill tree in TS4 or riding in TS3? Iā€™ll spare you.
I guess I could have includedĀ ā€œspending time on Boolprop with old and new friendsā€ in where my life has been. Itā€™s a nice lil community if also a place with its own idiosyncrasies as well. So it doesnā€™t feel like Iā€™m promoting another community if/when I make a thread there for Outrun the Scythe, I want to have a couple chapters of this ready to go by Outrunā€™s release, though itā€™s not gonna be the highest priority compared to it nor as long because I think I can blast through the gameplay quickly.
This one will be played in TS4 due to it having the easiest writing skill/I dunno variety is the spice of life. And hopefully another December release.
Defunded or Forgotten?: Oh shit I actually released stuff in 2020 and told no one? I do have aĀ ā€œmortifying ordeal of being knownā€ sinking feeling whenever I get a site hit because itā€™s not my bestĀ work (but good enough) and veered sharply into issues I may be over my head in, though I try to be a good noodle with research and listening. Maybe hiding is bad after all.
Being based off a very flawed and incomplete Sims 3 challenge I found in the annals of the Official Forums, thereā€™s a lot of behind-the-scenes work just making sense of things. And Iā€™m scared of working on reconstructing the house but I havenā€™t abandoned the project yet. The story has eight chapters so far and is pretty game-based with some additions here and there. Scared of how long it could be though!
Date for this unknown.
Untitled Sunlit Tides Decadynasty:Ā another year-long abandoned TS3 project with a much stupider reason why. Last update was about Hua getting ready for her wedding, and I wanted to do some poses for a bait-and-switch wedding chapter because to put it mildly, her real one was an absolute disaster.
Blender decided to fuck up its interface again, I got discouraged (this probably does account for some of the UptownĀ delays too), and when I decided to plow forward, it was for other projects instead.
Meanwhile I played all the way to Gen 5ā€²s teenhood and the only thing stopping me is time (it takes almost 30 minutes to load the file right now, though theyā€™ll be looking at moving towns in a couple gens) and maybe fear of the Logic skill.
Date for this also unknown but itā€™s easy to pump out updates once Iā€™m in the groove for it. My third heir had a difficult life so maybe Iā€™m just trying to bury it.
Also I just noticed the view count there was really good and probably because I linked it here on Tumblr last year. Thank you so much guys. I canā€™t really fret over views on Carlā€™s forum these days thanks to the years-long death spiral pretty much every forum anywhere has been riding on. But itā€™s a nice surprise. And itā€™s an alright little challenge recap to read during your lunch break or whatever.
The Wawas
I figured Iā€™d end on the real news everyone wants! Both the chihuahuas are a year and a half now and reached their adult size around a year ago. For the most part, they are happy and healthy dogs.
