Single Arm Planche? Plank? I don’t know what to call this, but it’s a trick I stole from my old days of burlesque, only I’m focusing on getting more into the horizontal plane. It’s not obvious, but one arm is bent and the elbow is tucked into my hip. I like to tell folks, "elbow yourself in the ovary!" The other hand is taking about 10-30% of bodyweight, depending on how stable I am. It wasn’t until I really visualized the superficial back-line and connected my spinal erectors to my hamstrings that I was able to get adequate glute activation to hold the plank together. If your glutes aren’t contracting, you’ll never get this one. Hamstring Curls for the win! I only did two glute exercises yesterday: this home-made hamstring curl (no machine necessary!) I stole from @joe___steel, and a single arm plank. I started with just bodyweight to see how it felt and then worked up to 10, 15 and 20lbs. It didn’t take much to feel glutes and hams contracting, not to mention a little calf cramp depending on the angle of my ankle. Today my glutes feel like I did heavy hip thrusts! In the second video, my pal @alpulcherio tests it out. You can see he’s working out core engagement while getting the glutes and hamstrings to do their job. I've been doing sets of 20 at 115 and 125 pounds for the better part of this year after rehabbing a back injury. Fellow trainer @michaeljfitness busted me for not going heavier. So, last night after warming up, I hit 125, 145, 165, 185 and finally 195lbs. With 10 reps I could probably do more, but that felt good for the night.
