hello friends! i hope you’re staying happy and healthy and AT HOME.
i’m here to ask for a little bit of help and a signal boost! as an online teacher, the platforms i’ve been working with have recently been busy. i’m trying my best to build up my clientele while everyone is at home, and part of doing so with these companies is referring new teachers. if you’re looking for a way to make some extra income while at home, please give this a shot if you qualify! to be transparent here: i do get a monetary compensation when someone joins as a teacher using my code and teaches their first class. this would help me out greatly during a time like this, and in return you get a pretty cool side job where you can make money from home (social distancing, yeah!).
i currently teach with three online companies: SayABC, VIPKid and Palfish. i’m gonna give you a little brief on each one in case you’re curious, and my dms are open for any questions you might have!
* all of these companies are chinese companies. their class times run in beijing timezone, usually from 3pm to 9pm beijing time during the week and 10am to 8pm beijing time on weekends.
below the cut you will find details! even if you aren’t interested in teaching, a reblog would help me out tremendously!
SayABC:
requirements: native english level, comp with audio/visual compatibility, bachelor’s degree or above, min 1 year teaching experience (preferred not not required), certified in tefl (preferred but not required), MUST be able to plug into a moden (ethernet connection)
pay: base pay of $13 USD per 40 minute class. incentive pay of $4 USD per class based on attendance and productivity. an additional $8 USD for any converted trial student as well.
students per class: 4
curriculum provided: yes
typical age group: 5-8
class time: 40 minutes
my code: referral link OR use code: EDUVCC when signing up / making your account!
VIPKid:
requirements: bachelor’s degree or higher, eligibility to work in the us or canada, 1 year of teaching experience (includes homeschooling, tutoring, coaching, mentoring or other life experiences), tesl (preferred not required), native level english (north american accent preferred not required).
pay: $7-9 USD per class depending on your base pay (decided on during your interview/mock class), participation incentive $1 per class (on time for each class), finished class incentive 50 cents to $1 per class ( teach 35-40 classes )
students per class: 1
curriculum provided: yes
typical age group: 3-11
class time: 25 minutes
my code: referral link OR use code: AYESH0014 when signing up / making your account!
Palfish (completely mobile app! teach from your phone or ipad, there is NO laptop client!)
requirements:
free talk/live streams: open to non-native english speakers, no qualifications, allow you to set your own rates, do not require minimum hours, allow you to teach from your phone or tablet, have students of all ages
official kids course: must be a native english speaker. must have a tesol/tefl, must be from US, Canada, UK, Ireland, or Australia
pay: set your own rate for free talk/live streams, official kids course is 22 USD per hour, $15 USD bonus for trial conversions $15 USD prop supplement when starting (new teacher bonus)
students per class: 1
curriculum provided: yes
typical age group: any age, though most students tend to be ages 5-8
class time: 25 minutes
my code: 91299713 when signing up / making your account!
-
*please note this list and the information is by no means comprehensive. i included links to either the official website or websites with reliable information that go into detail regarding pay, class times, etc. these companies are great if you need some extra income while you’re at home. i will say that teaching online can at times be unreliable, however, if you’re at home anyways and worried about money, it’s 100% worth a shot. i’ve had mostly great experiences with all 3 companies. you can google / youtube reviews and the pros and cons as well as additional advice for applications and mock classes. thank you so much and stay happy and healthy!

Hey I saw the question you responded about getting a TEFL certification, the thing is English is not my native language, but I still can get that certificate, will that make me elegible to a certain program? Or am I doomed just because of the place I was born on.
You can still get certified to teach English. I’m not sure which country you are in in order to do it, but there are a multitude of online programs in which you can get the certification.
Sadly, if you are not from the US, UK, South Africa, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or Ireland, you will not be able to teach through EPIK.
You will only be able to teach through hagwons depending on each’s requirements. I will say having English as your non-native language will put you at a disadvantage as most hagwons want native speakers because the Korean parents will want someone who is fluent to teach their children. (They take a lot of pride in knowing their child is getting the “unique” experience of talking with a native speaker. Also, they tend to want their children to emulate the accent of the native speaker as well. I read somewhere they really want their English to have an American accent. Though us Americans all sound so damn different lol)
I will say, knowing all of this, it is somewhat of a problematic rule because while I may be a native speaker of English it doesn’t mean I know every rule and minute detail of the language. Yet I won’t ramble on about that here. I can do that in another post. :3

Application Process
For this entry I'm going to be addressing all things needed when you're ready to apply for schools, companies or recruiting agencies. I'll also be offering some tips that I think will be useful or to be kept in mind during this process. Now, remember, the tips are most likely going to be from my own experience so it would be nice if you were able to apply this and other advice to reach what works best for you.
From the very jump I knew I couldn't apply directly to public schools because I would be overlooked. Why? Most Puerto Ricans, as American as we may be, aren't considered qualified to receive a work visa with the Korean government, allegedly. Now, this is the questionable part. In my journey to achieve what I want, I've met many Puerto Ricans before who have been able to receive a work visa and have worked as English teachers. If you do enough research, you know that you would have had to study in the United States for a certain amount of years, among other things, to be an exception. Most of the people I was able to hear from were born in Puerto Rico and studied their whole lives there with a few months of living in the States or never having been. So, these weren't special scenarios. So it's not impossible to make it over there... legally, mind you.
Public schools are very strict, from their requirements to their application period. One little slip and you won't be qualified or would have to wait for the next semester. However, if you meet all requirements you are safest applying through their programs or a recruiter working with them. However, you can't be as picky as you would with private schools. Why? Because you may want to teach in Seoul but be placed in Jeju. It's purely off of what they have available and what positions they need to fill. Remember, in this case, the recruiter isn't the one placing you in a school. They're simply connecting you with the public school program for you to then be placed in a school. You aren't taking as big a risk with public schools. You'll get good treatment for the most part, you'll get proper housing and you will be paid on time.
My experience isn't this, so I couldn't share much. I knew pretty early on that I would have to achieve this with the help of private schools or Hagwon and, hopefully, a recruiter.
Early on, hearing "Hagwon Horror Stories" is pretty terrifying when you're taking the risk of traveling across the world. Hagwons are not private schools in South Korea. They're academies. Private schools are schools that teach all of their subjects in English. Most stories talk about being mistreated or having a contract cut off, etcetera. While this is a risk you're taking, I have been assured that good schools do exist because of social media and the internet. Hagwons or private schools have realized that if they treat their teachers badly, those teachers can share their experience and these schools won't want to be worked with. Of course, being a teacher isn't perfect. Everyone has a job to do and just because people joke about this being an easy job, doesn't mean it's going to be that way. Expect moody people, expect to be scolded if you do something wrong. This happens in all jobs. Especially if you consider Hagwons and private schools being places where parents are paying for their children to receive the best education possible. Everyone is going to want good results.Just make sure to do your research and be vigilant. Ask questions. Trust your gut. Even when you have a recruiter. Be determined on what you want.
Now with all of this being said, why don't we jump into the list of things you want to get done ahead of time:
You have to be a citizen of a recognized English-speaking nation. This could be the U.S.A., U.K., Ireland, (some parts of) Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or South Africa.
A Bachelor's degree in any major, as long as it is 4 or more years and from an accredited college or university. Pretty self-explanatory, right? Though, I do know of many recruiters who don't mind you applying to them during your last semester. Just as long as you can assure them that you will be finishing during that semester. I, personally, decided to officially finish my degree before applying anywhere.
A TEFL or TESL certificate of at least 120 hours. These are also known as TESOL. It stands for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. Currently I am completing my TEFL course. Many recruiters have deals on certified TEFL/TESL, so do ask them about it or you can always look into it for yourself. However, this isn't a suggested requirement. Not anymore at least. I would like to teach in Seoul, which is a very competitive location, so being as prepared as possible is required to get what you want.
Resume and Cover Letter. Again, you want to be as prepared as you possibly can. This is why preparing a solid resume and cover letter is key. The cover letter is mostly what will attract schools or recruiters to take a look at your resume, so make sure you leave them something to be interested in looking into. Your resume is where you can present more of your experience.
You might also be asked if you have any of the following documents. This is where you can make a simple mistake like having the documents too early and then having them expire. It's okay, though. Remember, you can also redo them.
Documents you might need:
FBI Background Check. This process used to take up to 10-14 weeks before, but luckily it takes only a few days now. You can even have it e-mailed first to get a copy even earlier IF DONE ELECTRONICALLY. This is where you send the request electronically, then send all the necessary documents to the FBI. They will already be waiting for the documents. Make sure you also request the option of receiving the response by First-Class Mail. This will give you a physical copy sent by them in a quicker fashion. For more information you can visit this link
Sealed University or college transcripts. Make sure to have a few transcripts in their individual envelopes. Some might even suggest the envelope be sealed with the official university or college seal on the back, as well as a signature and date from the person in-charge to make sure the envelopes weren't tampered with. Just make sure you order a transcript for yourself to keep.
An original passport that has been valid for at least a year. You won't have to send this to them, but you will be asked for a photocopy. This is all to receive your working visa.
The FBI background check and your Bachelor's degree will have to be notarized and apostilled. Your recruiter will provide much more helpful information on this, since it needs to be done carefully. You can also look online to become more familiarized with what this is and how you can do it.
There are also a few additional requirements but those are more situation specific. For example, some might ask you to have a health and drug check before looking for the job while some might require you to take that health and drug check over in South Korea in the school. Make sure to be clear with your recruiter or school on medication you may be taking as it might be what keeps you from getting a job and, honestly, it's best to not get a job than going to jail. Having a nice professional photo, one with children and also a more casual picture wouldn't hurt. Actually, I suggest this. Think of it as additional points for you. You can also have proof of full-time teaching jobs, a teaching license or certificate. This might bump up your pay. I've even heard of people doing Korean-like resumes to appeal to the schools, or even video introductions.
This might be overwhelming and seems like a lot, and it is, but remember the more prepared you are the better. Just don't be over prepared. I made that mistake and have had my FBI check sadly expire, which means it needs to be redone. No big deal, though! I was able to apply to a recruiting agency who is very willing to work along with me. You might be nervous and you might be overwhelmed, but it all works out for the best. Keep working hard!

The Ultimate Guide to Teaching English in Thailand
Posted: 2/15/2020 / February 15th, 2020
Thailand is an English teacher’s dream. With a low cost of living, incredible food, rich culture, plenty of partying, and a mai pen rai (no worries) attitude, the Land of Smiles is a very popular country for English teachers.
For Thais, English is considered a necessity to work in the global market, so there is always a need for teachers. With language schools, primary schools, universities, and other locations offering English classes, there are numerous avenues for employment.
So, how do you get a job teaching English in Thailand?
In order to do so, you need to be a native speaker from an English-speaking country (defined as the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand) or prove your fluency, and have a bachelor’s degree.
Because of the popularity of teaching English in Thailand, I’d recommend also having a 120-hour TEFL, TESOL, or CELTA certificate to make you more competitive.
With all teaching opportunities in Thailand, salaries vary greatly depending on the location and employer. In hot tourist destinations like Koh Samui, Phuket, and other spots, expect to earn less than what you would make in less exotic locales, because people will accept a lower salary in exchange for the beach lifestyle.
You will earn the most in Bangkok, followed by Chiang Mai.
Here’s a breakdown of the various ways to teach in the country and what to expect with each position:
Public Schools
Public schools are free from preschool through high school. The school year begins in May and ends in March and includes a three-week break in October.
As a public school teacher in Thailand, expect to work full-time, even if you’re not teaching every moment of the day. Responsibilities range from creating lesson plans and exams to grading papers (none of which you are compensated for if it’s on your own time), as well as keeping office hours at school.
Students range in their knowledge and understanding of English, and often there is little guidance in terms of the curriculum you need to create. You’re basically on your own here! Many teachers incorporate games, television shows, and movies into their classes.
In public schools, the student-to-teacher ratio is high, so expect large class sizes.
Salaries range from 25,000 to 40,000 THB ($827–1,317 USD) a month. Teaching in the cities will earn you the most money. You can expect lower salaries in the countryside, but cost of living is so cheap there, you’ll still end up having plenty of extra money!
Private and International Schools
There are very few differences between public schools and private and international schools, other than the lower student-to-teacher ratio and the fact that salaries are significantly higher since they are not free to attend.
International schools have the most coveted positions, but you’ll need to be an actual certified teacher to get one of them, as the curriculum follows the West’s. Private schools are a little less strict, but you’ll still want to have some experience. You’ll need to have not only a degree but also a TEFL, TESOL, or CELTA certificate and prior teaching experience, and be a native English speaker.
If you’ve never taught English before or have only a little experience, you’re unlikely to get a job at one of these schools.
Whereas the public schools follow the Thai system and come with little support, these institutions tend to be more like Western schools, so if you’re wondering what teaching is like there, just think back to what it was like when you went to school!
International schools pay the most, roughly 80,000–170,000 THB ($2,633–5,596 USD) a month (which is well above the typical Thai salary and allows for your lifestyle to be more lavish); private schools pay 60,000–80,000 THB ($1,975–2,633 USD).
These positions also come with a lot of perks: contract bonuses, lots of vacation days, health insurance, and sometimes airfare to and from Thailand.
Universities
Teaching at a university in Thailand can help give you an edge over the competition for other English teaching jobs in the country. But teaching at a university means teaching part-time and earning only 30,000–60,000 THB ($987–1,975 USD) a month.
The upside is that you can also teach at another school part-time, you get a few months of paid vacation, and you are compensated generously should you have to work overtime (about 1,000–1,500 THB, or $33–49 USD, an hour).
Depending on where you teach, your responsibilities will be different. All teachers must come up with lesson plans, but some may also have to teach faculty or have additional sessions outside of the classroom, among other duties.
You may or may not have textbooks to use for your curriculum. Class sizes at universities are notoriously large, about 50 students.
Language Schools
Teaching English at a language school in Thailand is different than at a public or private school. Classes are normally held in the morning before the workday starts to accommodate businesspeople, then again in the afternoon and into the evening for children and adults.
The workweek at language schools extends into the weekend.
At language schools, classes are small and range from four to ten students. As a teacher, it’s your responsibility to come up with lesson plans and activities.
There’s also the option at language schools to work full- or part-time. Full-time teachers make anywhere from 30,000 to 40,000 THB ($987-1,316 USD) per month; part-time teachers make 350–500 THB ($11.50–16.50 UD) per hour.
There are lots and lots of language schools in the country, and jobs are fairly easy to get. They don’t really care about previous experience or even if you have a TEFL certificate (though having both makes it easier to get a job).
You’ll also get very little support from the schools and will basically have to set up everything on your own. You’ll only get paid for actual classroom time.
I didn’t really love teaching at the language schools, but the work was easy even if it was not well paid.
Corporate Training Programs
As a corporate teacher, you teach from a company’s office, giving lessons to their staff. Classes tend to be large, so many employees can attend. Because these programs are quite expensive, the positions are only filled by teachers with experience.
Expect to work during the morning or late at night, as you have to teach people outside business hours.
Corporate teachers make anywhere from 45,000 to 60,000 THB ($1,481–1,974 USD) a month, and it’s normal for the school to cover travel expenses to the company.
Test Preparation
Test preparation in Thailand is different than in other English positions. You must be knowledgeable in a variety of English tests, including SAT or GRE prep (and have finished in the 95th percentile or above), as well as IELTS and TOEIC, both of which are used to test students before they work or study abroad.
As a test prep teacher, classes are either groups or private and take place on both weekdays and weekends. It’s your job to not only teach the courses but also design and develop the course curriculum.
Test prep teachers average about 600 THB ($20 USD) an hour.
Best Job Resources for Teaching in Thailand
There are numerous sites to find jobs teaching English in Thailand. The best one for jobs is ajarn.com as it simply has the most listings and is specific to Thailand. It’s the oldest teaching in Thailand website too.
Other sites with job postings include the following:
Go Overseas
Teach Away
Teaching in Thailand
How to Apply for a Visa
It isn’t hard to apply for the Non-Immigrant B visa necessary to teach English in Thailand and your school will help you do, but there are quite a few steps to getting it and then starting teaching.
First, make sure your passport has validity beyond six months and have passport photos for applications, as well as your original bachelor’s degree, transcripts, and a certified criminal background check.
Next, you’ll need to apply for a visa from outside of Thailand and include a letter from your employer with the job offer. Once you have your visa, your employer steps in and handles the paperwork, completing the remainder of the application on your behalf.
After the visa is complete, you’ll need to have a physical exam and a medical certificate from a Thai doctor and then get your work permit. From there, it’s on to the Immigration Department in order to extend your visa in your passport for 12 months.
The last two steps are to get your tax card from the Tax Department and then your teaching license. Your employer should be able to assist you in all aspects of the process.
It’s important to note that if you choose to teach without these necessary items, you run the risk of getting kicked out of the country and fined.
***
Teaching English in Thailand is one of the best teaching opportunities in the world, thanks to the country’s cost of living, tropical environment, and laid-back lifestyle.
With so many options for teaching and the ease of getting a visa, it’s a perfect spot to start your English teaching career abroad.

Guide to Online Tutoring
Reasons to Consider Becoming a Tutor
If you’re burned out on your 9-5, or you’re looking for a part-time job to earn some extra money, consider becoming a tutor online. There are a plethora of reasons for you to review the opportunity, and we’ve outlined the most important ones for your consideration.
Work-Life Balance
It’s not a huge secret that the work-life balance equation has become less of a balance and more of an unequal scale that tips farther on the work side. Between longer hours, increased commute times, and required work travel, some professionals are burnt out on the whole endeavor. It’s why so many people are starting to consider legit work from home opportunities.
When it comes to work-life balance, it’s safe to assume that there will always be demands that you have to accommodate. However, when you remove some of the aspects that are within your control (such as a commute), you can create a more equally balanced scale.
Becoming an online tutor is a work from home opportunity that may be just the solution you are looking for. With flexible hours and no commute, you can regain some of the balance you’ve been looking for in your career. You can adjust your schedule to fit your family’s needs, while still generating an income. Taking the step to create a happier life for yourself, by changing your professional career, may start with becoming an online tutor.
Supplemental Income
If you’re looking for ways to increase your income, tutor jobs are an excellent option to consider. Not only is online tutoring a job you can do from home, but it’s also a gig that will enable you to make good money. The work is flexible for most of the job opportunities, which means you have the choice to make as little or as much as you want in your spare time.
If you choose to pursue the opportunity to tutor from home, you will be able to capitalize on the times you’re not at your 9-5. Adding a side hustle to your schedule may negate the whole concept of work-life balance. But, if you require reliable income, the sacrifices you’ll have to make will be worth the financial reward.
How Much Do Online Tutors Make?
If you hold a Bachelor's degree, most companies start new hires between $12-14/hr (USD). Many of the companies polled report that $20-26/hr is possible, as a tutor builds up experience. Tutors often increase their rate through referrals or teaching in-demand specialty subjects, in which case some tutors report that $50-100+/hr is possible.
Can You Make a Living as an Online Tutor?
Like most ways to make money online or earn extra money, it is possible to turn your tutoring side hustle into a full-time gig. However, before you hand in your resignation to make a full-time living as a tutor, you should build up some experience with several of the best online tutoring platforms. Teaching on several sites will help provide some stability in case of listings at one company drying up.
Reliable Employers
When you’re looking for remote jobs, it can become complicated to avoid scammers. A lot of companies that endorse they will “make you your own boss” are pyramid schemes. These are operations that will very rarely help you turn a profit.
It’s even more challenging to find a way to make money from home on a part-time basis.
Online jobs, while becoming more commonplace, are still inundated with scams and false promises. Becoming a home tutor safeguards you from these ploys. It also enables you to make the extra money from home that you need. You can establish yourself as a freelancer who works for a credible organization.
You may decide to stick with tutoring from home or branch into other fields that allow you to work remotely. In either circumstance, starting with an online tutoring company will provide you with a safe introduction to the world of virtual employment.
Qualifications to Become an Online Tutor
Every online tutoring organization is looking for something different. Some are seeking native English speakers to educate children in foreign countries. Others want to capitalize on your area of expertise to provide online tutoring for students who need help with test prep. Some want translators who can help adults sharpen their foreign language skills. Whatever the case, there are a few qualifications that seem to be in demand across the board.
College Degree
Most online tutoring organizations want you to have a college degree. A few platforms offer opportunities with no experience necessary. But, the majority of organizations are looking for educators who have a degree from a 4-year, accredited college. Some of the platforms are seeking applicants with expanded knowledge in a specific subject. For example, if you have an interest in becoming an English tutor or online English teacher, having a degree in that subject would benefit you.
Some online tutoring platforms offer their services to students in higher education if you’re interested in working at this more advanced level of tutoring than you will need either a Masters or Ph.D. in a field of your expertise to offer your services.
High-Speed Internet Connection
The second (and a very obvious) qualification is that you have a high-speed Internet connection. If you can't connect consistently with your students, you won’t be able to work at home as an online tutor. While this may require you to make an initial investment, it will be worth the price to make money online.
It may also be pertinent to note that you will need a reliable desktop or laptop computer. Some of the online platforms encourage their employees to work from anywhere. When they offer this flexibility, they do so with the understanding that you will have a working laptop and a good Wi-Fi connection. Reliability is a massive value in the online tutoring community, and you’re expected to uphold your end of the bargain.
Online Payment Capabilities
You will need an established method of accepting payment. Whether you prefer to receive compensation via PayPal, or you prefer direct deposit to your bank account, you will need to have some online method of accepting payment to work as an online tutor.
Interest & Passion
It’s easy to become caught up in the idea of a flexible schedule and a remote work opportunity. It’s important to remember that if you want to become an online tutor, you should have an interest and a passion for teaching. As is with any job, the work is not going to be easy, and you’re going to have both good and bad days.
Working with children and students can be a rewarding career path. It can also be a difficult one. Not every student will be the ideal intellectual who is eager for your help. You will need to learn techniques to assist you in working with the ones who are less passionate about their tutoring.
Make sure, before you apply to be an online tutor, that the reason you’re pursuing the opportunity is to help others. If you’re not interested in the opportunity for that foundational reason, you are setting yourself up for failure. Before you commit to working as a remote online tutor, check-in with yourself, make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons.
How to Become an Online Tutor
If we’ve convinced you to take the leap and teach online at home, there are a few simple steps you’ll need to take. First, you’ll need to find the platform that best suits your background and experience. With so many companies that promote working from anywhere as a tutor, how will you know which is the best one to pursue employment with?
We’ve taken the hard work out of this equation and completed the research for you. Keep reading to learn about the seven best online tutoring opportunities available to you. We’ll give you an overview of the qualifications required, the hourly earning potential, and a glimpse of the types of subjects offered.
Whether you’re looking for a side gig to supplement your full-time income or a new career, there is a tutoring opportunity for you, and we’ve found them!
Additional Resources to Become an Online Tutor
If you have the drive to work from home as an online tutor, but not the background and experience, there are plenty of solutions. Don’t put aside your dream of joining one of the best work from home jobs available. Put on your thinking hat, brush up your study skills, and use some of the excellent resources available. They will not only help you pursue your dreams, but they will also afford the expertise that you can use in your daily life.
Training Courses
Udemy is an online platform that offers a variety of educational courses. The site has a specific section of their website dedicated to teaching and learning. You can sharpen your skills in a subject area as well as learn techniques to become an effective tutor.
While these courses do cost money, the price is nominal in comparison to the income you can generate when you become an online tutor.
Public Speaking Assistance
If you feel like you freeze up in front of the camera, you’re not alone. Many people suffer from an inability to “perform” once they realize they’re in front of an audience. Even the most accomplished English speakers sometimes find they lose their ability to speak and formulate coherent sentences.
YouTube is a great resource to use to help you brush up on your public speaking skills. There are a ton of video tutorials that will teach you to speak with confidence. There are exercises you can incorporate into your daily routine that will prepare you for your onscreen debut.
Expanding Online Knowledge
One area we’ve failed to address is the computerized aspect of online tutoring. Even if your focus is to become an English tutor to students who use English as their second language, you will have to have an excellent working knowledge of computers and the online community.
Your trouble areas may be as simple as your typing speed. If you want to improve your ability to type and communicate on a computer, you can use this free tool from TypingClub. This will help increase your data entry capabilities so that you can work with students in a more efficient manner.
If your needs are more complicated, you may consider engaging the assistance of a friend or family member. Give your friend, who is an Internet connectivity expert a call via phone, and let him know about your interest in improving your knowledge. You will find an extensive support system if you ask for the help you need. Your friends and family will be more than willing to assist you in gaining future employment.
The Bottom Line
The era of online tutoring is upon us. Students have access to dozens of resources to enable them to succeed in the classroom or in learning a new language.
Likewise, if you want to become a tutor, the opportunities to start a successful business are plentiful. With the ability to set your schedule, pay rate, and decide what subject areas you offer, it has never been easier to provide educational services. Whether you want to make tutoring a side gig, or your full-time job, you can start your own tutoring business from the comfort of your home.
The resources available to assist you with your online tutoring career are also abundant. If you wish to pursue the opportunity to teach from home, you can achieve the education and experience you need online. If you’re inspired to pursue online teaching, you can earn your education degree online through several accredited programs. From there, you can seek a career as an online teacher.
Teaching and tutoring are unique callings. Online education is a great way to make some extra money or create an at-home work opportunity. However, it also requires you to have an interest and passion for helping others. If you feel like you’re one of the individuals who find purpose in assisting others in the field of education, navigate your options in the online tutoring arena, it may be the perfect field for your next big career move.

Everything You Should Know Before Teaching English in China
It’s Friday. You get off work teaching English in China and head home to munch on some sweet and sour chicken and dumplings while you pack your weekender. You’re off to hike Mount Huangshan, the UNESCO World Heritage Site set amidst “the loveliest mountains of China.”
Because, why not?
You’re there, and you can afford it. How? You’ve got a lucrative job spending your weekdays in a school teaching children or young adults how to speak and write what already comes naturally to you: English.
Teaching English in China is a dream gig if you’re looking to travel around Asia and make money doing it. But there’s a lot of important information you should know about how to land a teaching job in China and how to prep yourself before you go.
The Benefits of Teaching English in China
Teaching English abroad in China is an incredible experience. Not only do you have the opportunity to immerse yourself in a new culture and have the adventure of a lifetime, but you’ll also have a meaningful job that makes a positive impact on the lives of your students.
Plus, because the Chinese culture is so different to ours, every day in China is a new challenge that’ll not only impact your career but also open your mind.
Benefits for Teachers in China
Average first-year salary of 8,000 – 12,000 RMB/month ($1,150 – $1,700 USD)
Flight reimbursement to and from China
Provided housing or a housing stipend
Free health insurance
Visa application assistance
Help arriving and getting settled in China
Paid Chinese government holidays
Many first year teachers working for private training centers or teach abroad programs may also find additional benefits such as free TEFL certifications, training and orientation, or free Chinese lessons.
Of course, these are just the standard benefits. Schools looking to entice highly qualified or experienced teachers will typically offer more. Here are just a few of the benefits you might see when you’re applying to high-level positions:
Average salary for experienced teachers: 16,000 – 30,000 RMB/ month ($2,300 – $4,300 USD)
Moving stipend to pay for extra checked luggage
Up to 20 paid vacation days in addition to government holidays
All visa costs reimbursed
How to Get English Teaching Jobs in China
If the above all sounds enticing to you, here’s how to get an English teaching job in China.
1. Complete Your TEFL
First things first: you’ll need a “Teaching English as a Foreign Language” (TEFL) certificate. The course will teach you how to teach English as a second language (ESL). Having a TEFL shows schools (and the Chinese government) that you actually know how to teach.
Your TEFL certificate is crucial!
While most teaching positions will require you to have a degree and a teaching qualification such as a TEFL certificate or a CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults), you don’t necessarily need teaching experience if you have a certification.
The most common and easiest qualification for those interested in teaching English in China is the TEFL. The minimum is a 120-hour online course.
TEFL certifications can be done in-person or online, and they range anywhere from about $300 to $3,500. But you can easily get your TEFL online for a pretty reasonable price!
I recommend doing it through i-to-i because it’s reasonably priced, and it gives you access to an extensive job board upon completion.
On the other hand, a CELTA is a brand of TEFL from the University of Cambridge, and it’s commonly mentioned as the best certification for teaching abroad.
While CELTA certifications will look pretty impressive, they’re also really expensive. They also have a fairly high dropout rate because they’re more demanding.
You can find more information about the CELTA here.
2. Find Jobs
While you can get a job on the ground in China, I highly recommend applying online so that you can show up on the proper visa with the knowledge that everything is prepared for your arrival.
So, once you’ve got your qualification, you now have to find a job.
Fortunately for you, there are a ton of open English teaching positions in China—and there are a ton of sources to help you find them.
Students in Wuxiang, China
To start your job hunt, make it easier on yourself by narrowing down your options. Consider the following questions to do just that:
Do you want to deal with young children, teenagers or adults?
What cities would you be interested in teaching in?
Do you want to teach in a public or private school? (Private school jobs are usually harder to get and can be more demanding, but they tend to pay better.)
And after you’ve determined all of that, you can start using job boards like these to look for jobs:
3. Apply for Jobs
There are three different ways you can find jobs in China beyond using TEFL providers like i-to-i that offer job placement as part of their certification.
Apply Directly: You can apply directly on many private school sites, as well as on some job boards. This cuts out the middle man, but it’s not always an option for public schools.
Work With a Recruiter: Many public schools and training centers use recruiters to find qualified teachers. These recruiters will help you find a job and may even help you negotiate your contract, apply for your visa and make a decision if you’re stuck between a few schools. While some have websites advertising their services, others pose as job boards; some may even request an interview before working with you.
Go through a Teach Abroad Programs: Teach Abroad Programs also help you find jobs in China. However, the emphasis is always on the program, rather than the job itself. You’re first accepted to the program and later placed in a school. You may be able to request certain cities or job types, but it’s not always guaranteed you’ll get the job you want.
Note: I’m not a fan of Teach Abroad Programs for two reasons:
They lure you in with a lot of free stuff (TEFLs, orientation, Chinese lessons), but your salary ends up being much lower than it would have been if you’d just used a recruiter.
You often have little to no say over which school you’re placed in, so you might end up all alone teaching on a factory-lined highway where you’re the only foreigner for miles… not that I’m speaking from experience or anything.

Teaching English in China Requirements
If you’re looking to teach English in China, there are a few things you’ll need to meet legal requirements. China is desperate for foreign teachers, so you can easily get a job teaching abroad without any experience.
Here’s what you do need to teach in China, however:
Citizen of one of the approved English-speaking countries (US, UK, Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa)
Authenticated Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
Clean criminal background check from your country of residence
Authenticated 120-hour TEFL certification
If you’re looking for better, higher-paying jobs, these qualifications will help, as well:
Prior teaching experience
A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in English or Education
CELTA certification
Licensed certified teacher in your home country
Teaching English in China Salary
Salaries teaching in China vary across positions and locations; so don’t be surprised if you see a very wide salary range on most job boards. Jobs in China will offer as low as $700 a month (5,000 RMB/month), but that doesn’t mean you have to take those low-paying jobs!
Ultimately, you want to make a great English teacher salary.
Let me walk you through the average job salaries and what you should aim for with each type of position and location.
1st Tier Cities in China: $1,150 – $1,700 USD
Most ESL teaching jobs in first-tier cities like Beijing and Shanghai will pay anywhere from $1,150 – $1,700 USD/month after tax (8,000 – 12,000 RMB).
That said, I personally wouldn’t take a job that pays less than $1,450 USD/month (10,000 RMB). There’s absolutely no need to take the lowest paying jobs, so just apply around to a few positions until you find something in the $1,450 – $1,700 range (10,000 – 12,000 RMB/month).
2nd Tier Cities in China: $700 – $1,450 USD
Smaller, second-tier cities like Nanjing, Xi’an, Chengdu and Hangzhou have a lower cost of living cities like Beijing and Shanghai. This lower cost of living means a slightly lower salary, however, you’ll still be able to save big since the cost of food and housing is less than half of what you’ll find in the big cities!
Happy students learning English!
The average salary in a smaller Chinese city is around $700 – $1450 USD/month after taxes (5,000 – 10,000 RMB). That said, I never recommend taking the lowest paying positions.
Look for a position that pays at least $1,150 USD/month (8,000 RMB) with provided housing and you’ll be fine!
College and University Teachers in China: $700 – $850 USD
Fun fact: College and university teaching positions are the lowest-paying jobs in China. Why? Who knows!
But seriously, it’s extremely difficult to find a college or university ESL position in China that pays more than $850 USD/month (6,000 RMB). Most of these jobs pay just over $700 USD/month (5,000 RMB).
That said, the hours in this position are very minimal, so you can always use your free time to travel around China or tutor English part-time.
International Schools: $2,600 – $4,300
International school jobs are by far the most lucrative positions in China. Experienced international school teachers can make anywhere from $2,600 USD (18,000 RMB) to $4,3000 USD (30,000 RMB) per month.
While this is a huge range, the salary really does vary on the city you’re in, as well as the amount of teaching experience and relevant qualifications you have. Most international school teachers with more than two years experience tend to make at least $2,800 a month (20,000 RMB).
Private Tutors in China: $29 – $58 USD/hour
If you’re looking for a lucrative side-hustle, you’ve come to the right place. You can make great money part-time tutoring in China.
In smaller second-tier cities, the going rate is $29 USD (200 RMB) per hour. As you gain experience, you may be able to find jobs offering a bit more. For example, I taught business at a local company for $65 for 1.5 hours (400 RMB).
If you’re in a larger city like Beijing or Shanghai, the standard rate is $43 USD/hour (300 RMB). However, with experience, you can always charge more.
Types of English Teaching Schools in China
Once you’re certified, you’ll need to start thinking about what type of job in China is best for you. There are so many different school and job types in China, it’s important to decide which type of school is going to best fit your needs before you start applying to positions.
Private Language Schools
Private language schools, also known as training centers, are a very common place to teach English in China. These for-profit schools typically teach students in the evening or on the weekends.
You’ll typically have small classes of anywhere from two to 10 students, teaching oral English to a variety of age groups.
While most private language schools teach ESL, there are actually schools that specialize in other subjects like test prep, public speaking, debate, college counseling, drama and art. Some of these private schools have high-paid positions with plenty of benefits. For example, I worked for over two years as a college counselor in China!
Private language school hire new teachers year-round, so if you’re looking to start a new job and can’t wait for September or February, this is the place to look.
Public Schools
Chinese public schools are another common place for people to teach English in China. Public schools often hire supplementary oral English teachers to teach students once a week or even once every two weeks.
Richelle with her students in Wuxiang
Most public schools in China have Chinese teachers teach English grammar and writing while preparing students for admissions tests. However, these schools have realized that most students have a difficult time speaking English, so they started hiring foreign teachers to fill the gap.
If you work at a public school, you’ll typically be working Monday-Friday from around 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., teaching class sizes of 30 to 50 students. Yes, Chinese public school class are huge.
If you do want to work at a public school, these schools only hire new teachers for September and possibly February since they rarely need new teachers to start part-way through a semester.
Colleges and Universities
If you’re looking to work a job with fewer hours so you have plenty of time to explore, a college or university job might be best for you. While these positions pay the least, they also have much fewer class and office hours.
Teaching oral English at a college or university can be the perfect opportunity to explore China while supporting yourself financially. If you’d rather spend most of your time enjoying China and don’t care much about having a high salary, this might be the perfect job for you.
International Schools
China’s highest paying jobs with the most benefits are definitely international school positions. Most international schools in China are looking for teachers that are licensed and certified to teach in their home country with more than two years of professional teaching experience.
People climbing the stairs to a temple in China
International schools are also a great way for non-native speakers of English to teach legally in China. If you are a certified teacher in your home country with at least two years of experience, you can legally teach a subject in English at an International school. For example, I had a Dutch friend who taught math in English.
Private Tutoring
If you’re looking to make a little extra cash in China, private tutoring is the way to go. While teaching outside of your contract is technically illegal in China, the government really isn’t cracking down on private tutors.
That said, if you do have a full-time teaching job in China, private tutoring can be a violation of your contract, so just be careful and definitely don’t poach your students for outside private tutoring.
Personally, I worked as a private tutor while getting my Master’s degree in China. Having a few side gigs allowed me to support myself while studying, and it was relatively easy to find jobs once I made my services known around campus.
Some teachers in China do decide to make a full-time job out of multiple tutoring gigs. While this is a fantastic way to make a lot of money with no office hours, just keep in mind that this is technically not legal, and there will be no support system or benefits like vacation time, health insurance or free housing.
Document and Visa Process for English Teachers in China
The visa process for teachers in China is notoriously confusing and time-consuming. Thankfully, most jobs assign someone to walk you through the entire process, so you’re not alone.
Here are the documents you’ll need for an official Z Work Visa in China:
Valid passport
Chinese visa application form
Authenticated 120-hour TEFL certificate
Authenticated bachelor’s degree
Criminal Background Check
Official Acceptance letter (sent from your school)
Foreign Expert Certificate (sent from your school)
The process for procuring these documents can actually take a few weeks, or possibly even a few months. Many schools trying to bend the rules might have issues getting a Foreign Expert Certificate for you, and may need to try multiple times before they can secure one.
For example, I was supposed to have two years of college counseling experience post-graduation for my college counseling job in China. However, I had actually been in China since pretty much the day I graduated from college, so my school had to do a lot of convincing to get me my certificate!
You’ll get immersed in the local culture in China!
Because the process can be lengthy and time-consuming, you’ll want to start applying for jobs at least three to four months early. For a September start, I always recommend applying in May or June.
Once you have all of these documents, you’ll need to apply for your Z Work visa either at your local consulate or embassy, with a visa service agency (if you live nowhere near a consulate like me), or in Hong Kong.
When you arrive in China, you’ll need to switch from a Z Work Visa to a Residence Permit. Your school will apply for this permit for you, but you will need to get a medical check once you’re in China.
Teaching English in China Without a Degree
If you don’t have a Bachelor’s degree, it is possible to teach in China… just not legally. China’s ESL market is booming, and there just aren’t enough legally qualified teachers to serve the intense demand in China. That’s where you come in.
So many schools are willing to hire teachers without a degree on tourist or business visas. Many of these schools don’t have the permits necessary to hire a foreign teacher legally, while others don’t have the money to provide salaries for qualified teachers.
If you are working illegally in China, just be sure to work for a school with decent reviews online. The last thing you want is to get scammed teaching in China, and without a legally binding contract to fall back on, you’ll have less of a safety net in China if, for some reason, your school doesn’t give you everything they’d promised.
When it comes to teaching on a tourist visa, this is a very common practice and I have many friends in China who have done this. Just keep your head down, don’t announce to everyone in a crowded bar that you’re a teacher, and you should be fine!
Teaching English in China as a Non-Native Speaker
If you’re not from one of the seven “native speaker countries” (US, UK, Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa), there are two ways you can teach in China:
The legal way
The illegal way
If you’re a licensed and certified teacher with two or more years of teaching experience, you can teach a subject in English at an international school. While you won’t be able to teach English, you’ll get to teach subjects like math, science, psychology, history, art and more!
If you do have a bachelor’s degree from a “native speaker” country, some provinces in China might be able to issue you a work visa. You may also be able to find a job teaching your native language, too.
If none of the above are options, you can always teach on a tourist or business visa. Just like those without degrees, be sure to do a ton of research on your school so you don’t get scammed in China.
Beijing’s city skyline
The Best Places to Teach English in China
While most teachers want to teach in the famous cities like Beijing and Shanghai, I personally recommend second-tier cities for first-year teachers in China.
Why move to a city you’ve never heard of? Smaller cities in China are the perfect place for a first-year teacher in China. Firstly, they’re of a tighter-knit expat population, making it easier to meet people and make friends. Second-tier cities are also more immersive with fewer comforts of home (so it’s more of a cultural experience).
That said, there’s definitely nothing wrong with living and working in a big city like Beijing or Shanghai. I lived in Beijing for two and a half years and loved it.
The process of picking the perfect place to live can be a bit overwhelming, so to make things easier, let’s go through some of the best cities to teach English in China. All of these cities have plenty of teaching positions and a great quality of life, so you really can’t go wrong with any of the locations on this list.
Nanjing
China’s old southern capital, Nanjing is the perfect place for a first-year teacher in China. Just north of Shanghai, Nanjing straddles the Yangtze river and is filled with history from its time as a capital of China.
Spend your weekends exploring Xuanwu Lake or the Presidential Palace, take a trip out to the Ming Tombs or reflect at the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Museum. There’s always something to do in Nanjing!
Nanjing is also a very green city, filled with parks where you can find locals playing mahjong or dancing in groups. It’s also very central, close to many other cities like Shanghai, Hangzhou and Suzhou.
Xi’an
The ancient capital of China and home to the Terracotta Warriors, Xi’an is an incredible city to teach abroad.
Located in North Central China, Xi’an is famous for its history, incredible food and Muslim culture. In addition to the Terracotta Warriors, Xi’an also has the best preserved ancient city wall in all of China. You can even rent a bike and explore the entire city from above!
Home to delicious noodles, kebabs, and roujiamo (the “Chinese hamburger”), Xi’an is a city for foodies. Spend your weekends wandering the Huiminjie Muslim Market where you can try some of the best food Xi’an has to offer!
Hangzhou
Looking to live and work in a beautiful, serene city full of history and culture? Then Hangzhou is the place for you. An hour outside bustling Shanghai, Hangzhou was dubbed the most beautiful place in the world by Marco Polo.
Spend your free time walking around West Lake, stop by a traditional teahouse or take your Chinese coworkers to KTV and spend the evening belting out pop songs.
Surrounded by other big cities like Shanghai, Suzhou and Nanjing, you’ll be able to easily explore much of China on your weekend breaks.
Chengdu
Do you love spicy food? Are you obsessed with pandas? Well, look no further than Chengdu. The birthplace of China’s spicy “mala” cuisine, Sichuan is the perfect place to stuff your face with hot pot, mapo tofu, mouthwatering noodles and any spicy Chinese dish your heart could ever desire.
Chengdu is also home to the Giant Panda Reserve, so you can visit these cuddly giants when you’re not in class! In Chengdu, you’ll also find beautiful bamboo forests lined with teahouses where you can join locals in getting your ears cleaned.
If you’re looking for traditional China with a modern (spicy) twist, Chengdu is the city for you.
Beijing
I know I said that second-tier cities are best for first-year teachers, but I couldn’t leave out my China home of Beijing!
Do you love learning about international politics? Are you a huge history buff? Do you dream of learning Chinese? Then you belong in Beijing! A giant cosmopolitan city, and the seat of power in China, Beijing is a place no traveler (or exapt) in China can miss.
Richelle at the Great Wall of China
Beijing is also the standard for Mandarin Chinese, making it one of the best cities to learn Chinese.
In your free time, spend your weekends hiking the Great Wall, wandering the Temple of Heaven or getting lost in Beijing’s ancient hutong neighborhoods.
Shenzhen
If you’re looking for a vibrant cosmopolitan city with hot weather and great shopping, look no further than Shenzhen.
One of China’s newest cities, this economic powerhouse is located right across the water from Hong Kong, making visa (and shopping) trips extremely easy. You can just hop on the subway or ferry and be there by lunch.
If you’re looking for hustle and bustle, warm weather and plenty of things to do, Shenzhen is your city. The location also makes it super convenient for those of you who are teaching illegally, since all you need to do is hop on the subway for your visa runs.
Shanghai
While I’m definitely a Beijing person (the Beijing vs. Shanghai rivalry is real) I can’t deny that many teachers are drawn to cosmopolitan Shanghai.
Shanghai is China’s business center and most international city. Here you’ll find plenty of international food, pop stars visiting from around the globe and a pretty hopping nightlife scene.
Grab a drink at a bar in the French Concession, wander the bund and take in the scene of the Shanghai skyline, or take a trip up to the top of one of Shanghai’s tallest buildings for an incredible view. You’ll never run out of things to do in Shanghai.
Is China a Good Place to Live?
China is often featured by the west in a negative light. We focus on pollution, internet censorship and crowds. However, China is a fantastic place to live if you’re looking for the adventure of a lifetime.
Firstly, let’s talk about income.
I managed to save $40,000 in two years while working in China without even really trying.
I completely paid off my student loans, and I had a great quality of life while doing it.
In fact, I drank $10 cocktails at fancy bars. I went to Starbucks whenever I felt like it. And I took taxis to work when I accidentally slept in. Yup, I even had my own private office with a view and 20 vacation days!
Beyond that, every day in China was a unique adventure.
While living in China wasn’t always easy, it certainly was never boring. I lived in the middle of Beijing’s historic hutong neighborhoods where I would explore every weekend. I found cat cafes, amazing hole-in-the-wall restaurants and I hiked nine different sections of the great wall (some of which weren’t officially open to tourists!)
You’ll make lifelong friends when you teach in China
Sure, China is vastly different from the US, but that’s what I was looking for. I wanted to be challenged to adapt to a new culture and survive in a country where I could barely speak the language. I wanted to be forced to eat new foods and try new things.
Does saving money while having an incredibly immersive adventure sound great to you? Then China is definitely a good place to live.
Is it Safe to Teach English in China?
When I first left to study in China, everyone worried that I’d end up in some prison. I was warned to watch what I say on my blog. (Fun fact: I’m not important enough for the Chinese government to care what I write!). And I was warned about talking politics, as well as government rules and restrictions.
I’ll be honest: China’s government is not my favorite. China has internet censorship, no freedom of speech and horrible human rights abuses.
But, that doesn’t mean China safety is a problem for you as a teacher.
Honestly, as long as you don’t go running around Tiananmen Square with a “free Tibet” sign, you’ll be fine. Yes, you’ll need to buy a VPN (see reviews for the best ones here) to get around internet censorship. But otherwise, the Chinese government really doesn’t affect your day-to-day life.
If you’re going to be worried about anything, be worried about getting hit by an e-bike while crossing the road with a green light. That’s the real danger.
How to Teach English in China Online
Maybe you don’t want to go to an actual school every day. Or maybe you can’t actually make it to China right now. The good news for you is that you can teach English in China online, too.
With the advent of new technology, teaching Chinese kids online has never been easier. There are now so many different online schools that hire remote teachers to teach English to students back in China.
The great thing about this job is that there are no office hours and you can do it from anywhere. You can teach online part-time while in China, or you can teach full-time from your hometown or another country.
Simply, just look for online jobs on sites like the following:
You’ll still want and maybe even need a TEFL, depending on the job. So follow the same steps for getting a job on the ground.
I can vouch for the fact that teaching English in China is an unbeatable experience. I earned and saved enough money to travel the world while paying off my student loans and hitting up Starbucks on the regular. Beyond that, thanks to my experiences teaching English in China of all places, I’ve become a more open-minded and adventure-ready traveler.
So what are you waiting for? Get online and start getting certified!

Many people ask me for advice and help on how to get an ESL job in South Korea. I have been putting this post off long enough, so I’m going to give you on what to prepare and know before embarking on this adventure.
Anyone can read this post, but as a South African, I will focus on finding and working in ESL in South Korea specifically. I’ve tried to put it down in 5 steps, but there are processes along the way and in between. This is as concise as I can make it.
What you need to know before applying:
Degree or no degree
I’ll be honest Korean language schools look for applicants with certified degree form a university. The best thing is that it can be a degree or major in ANYTHING. You simply just need an undergraduate degree. The only time you need a masters or more is if its for a university language job, and that a totally different visa (I’ll get into visas later on).
If you don’t have a degree, you can still apply for an ESL position in South Korea. However, you will go most likely have to go through a recruiting agency who can find a placement. Note, that those without a degree will earn less and will not have much say in where they are allocated.
TEFL or TESOL
In my opinion a TESOL is a much better option. It’s a one up from the TEFL, which has somewhat become outdated. There are numerous language schools around Cape Town which offer the TESOL and TEFL courses. TESOL will offer more practical hours to theory and help you prepare lesson if you need to do that at the Korean school. Whether you go to a school or language centre, they always look for this qualification. In most cases, it could also mean you get slightly higher pay.
Private language academy or government school?
Hmmm…. This will depend on what you personally want. I have never worked in an actual school. In my 4 years, I have only worked for private language centres (hagwon). They don’t require as much paperwork. So in this post, I will write what you need to for the private academies only.
Read more about my experiences living in KoreaRead more about my experiences living in Korea
What documents do I need to prepare?
The documentation tend to change over time, but this is what I know as the important ones for now:
Copy of degree/diploma (need to be apostilled and notarised)
Police clearance certificate (need to be apostilled and notarised)
Contract from Korean company/employer
Application for E2 Visa (obtained from Korean embassy website)
Valid South African Passport
2 current ID photos
(For those wanting to apply to an actual school via the government will need much more papers such as both high school and primary school certificates.)
The Process
Step 1: How to get a police clearance in South Africa
When I first applied I could get the application at the local police station, and then print it out on the day. That doesn’t exist anymore. Here’s what you now need to do:
Visit your nearest police station and tell them you need an application for a police clearance.
You will pay a fee for this document. Public service does not exist anymore.
The office will take your fingerprints, which you will press onto the application form.
Fill out the rest of the form
Now that you have you application form, you will need to send it all the way to Pretoria.
You must pay the fee first and you can send the deposit with the form in the envelope to the Pretoria. I use the regular mail at the post office, as the processing time will take about 2 months in any case. Once issued it will take 2 weeks to get back to you with regular post.
Step 2: Getting your documents notarised
This is a fairly simple procedure. You only need to get the copy of your degree (with original) and police clearance notarised by a public notary. You can go to certified and registered law firm. They usually charge a fee.
Step 3: Getting your documents apostilled
What is an apostille? It’s a big red sticker you get from the court to confirm you documents are authentic. They used to do it at the Cape High court here in Cape Town, but that service is no more. For those living outside Johannesburg or Pretoria, you will have to send:
Original degree/diploma certificate
A copy of your degree and certificate which you need to first get notarised at a certified law firm to confirm it is an official copy.
You can get as much copies stamped for the fee, and you can keep it for later use.
When you have your police clearance and copy of degree notarised, you will have to resend them back to Pretoria to get the apostilled.
Now seeing as your actual hard earned degree is in this package I recommend you go private courier. I use the ever resourceful Docs for Expats, which have been around for some years. Great service and totally reliable. You send your document to them and for a reasonable fee they take you papers to the centre and fetch it when it’s done and they deliver it back to you. They will send it back via a local private courier for a much less rate than regular private couriers. This service is amazing.
If you don’t trust anyone one with your papers, then you can send it by yourself but be sure to include the return costs in the package. This will cost you more.
After you have your police clearance and degree copy apostilled, you can now start looking for an ESL job in Korea!
Step 4: How to find an ESL job in Korea
There are two ways: You either apply through a certified recruiter or you go job hunting yourself with no middle man. I personally apply by myself. I search job boards and websites and apply directly to the academies. This allows me to choose who I want to work for, what I’m prepared to put up with and, more importantly, where I want to work in Korea.
If you are going to apply for a government school, you need to apply via their website directly, or go through a recruiter in South Africa or Korea. They have lots of ads online to contact them and they’ll guide you through the process.
I don’t ever use recruiters, I’ve had bad experiences with them and they lie a lot. For first timers they tend to take advantage of the fact that you know NOTHING about the country. At the end of the day, they just need to make their targets and won’t care if they place you in the middle of nowhere. After the contracts signed and you are there you are now on your own and your employer’s problem. They tend to also lie about not having vacancies in various locations to fill up the least popular locations. I warned you.
Here are my job preferred sites:
eslcafe.com teachaway.com
Once you find a job
Here’s standard procedure if you finally get a Korean employer interested:
Email reply asking you if you have all your docs ready and when you can do a phone interview.
Sound cheerful and happy during the phone interview and polite. And speak clearly so they can hear your pronunciation is understandable. Korean language schools tend to prefer the North American accent, so as a South African you need to make you accent easy to understand.
After the interview and you are successful, you will receive an email with the contract
Print out the contract and sign it.
Step 5: Applying for an E2 visa
If you are not an actual qualified teacher with zero teaching experience, like me, then this is the work visa you will be applying for in Korea.
The E2 visa allows foreigners from English speaking countries such as South Africa, UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand to work as ESL teachers in South Korea.
An E2 visa requires the school or company to pay for your flights, pay for your accommodation, entitles you to year-end bonuses and specific work hours as a foreigner in Korea.
You are not an actual teacher, but will be referred to one regardless, and will focus on speaking lessons to students. You only focus on speaking and interaction in the English language.

Ok, ready to do this? Here’s the last step’s process:
Go on the Korean embassy in South Africa website and find the E2 visa application form, print it out and fill it in. In your package send:
Passport
Copy of passport
Two ID pictures
Copy of signed contract
Apostilled and notarised degree copy
Apostilled and notarised police clearance certificate
Then you wait for you visa to be processed. Once that is complete, you should receive your flight from your employer to Korea to start your new adventure.

5 Steps We Took to Reach Location Independence (+Tips For You)
In this article, I’m going to share the 5 steps we personally took to go from budget backpackers with no jobs, to fully location independent business owners — while learning a variety of useful skills along the way.
It’s been 8 years since we became location independent, and we’re incredibly grateful that we took the leap into a life of remote work and financial independence back when we did.
It seems that now in 2020, remote work is becoming the norm rather than the exception.
These days, more than ever, it’s imperative to have financial freedom and the ability to work from anywhere in the world. I hope this information gives you some tips and ideas while shedding a little light on the current climate of remote work.
This is our story and our experience, with actionable steps and information to help you on your journey as well!
Us in the Philippines in 2012 – we’ve come a long way since then!
1. Teaching a Language
Changing someone’s life by showing them the gift of language is a very rewarding feeling.
For us, that language was English, but you could teach your native tongue as well. There are many companies that you can teach online (some, you don’t need a Bachelor’s Degree).
Volunteering
Our first teaching experience came when we were in the Southeast Asian country of Laos in 2009. At a cafe, we saw an ad posted for volunteer work and jumped at the opportunity.
In between exploring the historic city of Luang Prabang in the morning and wandering the vibrant night markets in the evening, we would sit with children and teenagers and help them with their English conversational skills — through chatting and reading books.
Where our love for teaching started! Us in Laos 2009 reading and speaking with teenagers to improve their English.
The second experience was when we were in Myanmar in 2012. We met up with a small group from Taiwan who were there to teach English to the children in a rural village near Hsipaw.
They welcomed us to join, and the next 7 days were spent in the village teaching everyday vocabulary words to our students through physical objects, drawings, games, and songs.
Teaching in our makeshift classroom in rural Myanmar – one of the best weeks of our lives.
Evenings were spent dining with the villagers while enjoying the homecooked meals they prepared for us.
The lessons took place on a tarp on the dirt ground, with pigs and chickens roaming through the classroom. The excitement, interest, and giggles from the Burmese children were priceless.
Those two volunteer jobs that we took on really gave us a love for teaching. Aside from travelling, this became our new passion. But, in order to live and travel around the world, we needed to earn an income from this profession.
So, we moved to China in June 2012 and got a job in a private school.
Dinnertime in the village in Myanmar. So much fun preparing food, and it was delicious!
Teaching English and Living in China
Yangzhou, China would be our home for one year while we taught children aged 4 – 16. By actually moving to China rather than teaching online, we were able to be fully immersed in the culture and made many lifelong friends along the way.
Finally, we were earning an income, and returning to our home in Canada for work wasn’t necessary.
At the time, we were able to make around $1,400 per month each from working 20 hours a week. Housing, healthcare, taxi costs, flights to and from China, a year-end bonus of $1,000, and our TEFL certification were included in our contract.
We were happy with the position and enjoyed our year in Yangzhou! Teaching English really was the catalyst that sparked our life of fulltime travel and remote work, and we’re forever grateful that we decided to give it a try.
Having fun with some of my students in class in Yangzhou, China
Actionable Steps to Take
These days, teaching online (rather than in-country) is a much more common way to teach. With many schools, you can work from your laptop, while living anywhere in the world.
Teach students from your villa in Bali, or your house in the USA, it’s up to you!
If you want to move abroad and have a more immersed cultural and teaching experience, you’ll want to make sure you get your TEFL certification through a company that offers job placement and assistance.
There are many reasons to get TEFL certified, but knowing you’ll receive help with finding work is a big one.

2. Starting a Website
Creating this website was the best thing we ever did.
As teachers, we worked for someone else, but by becoming digital marketers, travel bloggers, and content creators, we’ve been able to generate income through our own sources and be our own boss.
Starting Goats On The Road
Back in 2012, we read an article from a fellow blogger who said he was earning around $2,500/month from his travel blog. To us, this was a lot of money and we couldn’t believe it was possible to earn an income from sharing travel stories!
We bought the domain name, www.goatsontheroad.com, while travelling in the Philippines, but it wasn’t until a few months later when we were teaching in China, that we used much of our free time to actually build up the website.
The first photo we have of blogging! 2012 in El Nido, Philippines
We shared musings from the road, information on how people could travel to the places we had been, and photos and blog posts on what it was like living and teaching in Yangzhou.
Goats On The Road is our baby and our flagship site. Everything (well, almost everything!) that we’ve gone through in our lives since 2012 has been written about here. As our travel style and lifestyle has evolved, and as we’ve grown, so too has this website.
Earning an Income Through Blogging
We earned our first money in 2013, and from there, this website has grown to be one of the top travel blogs online, with a large and loyal readership.
There has been a wide variety of ways that we’ve diversified our income streams through blogging. Our most profitable ones are affiliate marketing through SEO, in-content advertising, sale of digital products that we’ve created ourselves, and press trip opportunities.
One of the coolest press trips we’ve had – creating a new trekking route in Kyrgyzstan
We’ve been fortunate to earn enough money from this website to travel full time, live abroad, and save money for our future. We’re proud of the business we’ve created and are grateful for the continued support from our “Tribe” (that’s you!).
Actionable Steps To Take
Think of a topic that you’re knowledgable and passionate about. Are you into fashion and beauty? Cooking and meal prep? Tech? Animals? Golf?
If so, start a website around that topic and share your useful, first-hand information with the world — while earning an income along the way.
Do you have a skill that you want to turn into a business — construction, landscaping, pet sitting, hair styling? If so, you’ll want to start a basic website to show what you can offer to your clients.
Many people think that having a website is simply for blogging and telling stories, but as you can see, that’s not the case!
One of the many blogging offices we’ve had
If you’re interested in starting a website today (in any genre), you can get your website up and running in around 10 minutes. If you use this link, you’ll receive our Beginner Blogger Course, and blogging tips ebook for free.
By starting a website and creating content in the way that the course outlines, you’ll see an audience grow over time and you can earn money from your site in as little as just a few months (as Nick has proven with his newest website).
3. House Sitting & Pet Sitting
Can you imagine living in a penthouse in New York City, on a vineyard in Italy, or a beachfront bungalow in the Caribbean? Well, it’s possible through house and pet sitting, and those are all job opportunities that we’ve personally received!
Our Experience House Sitting and Pet Sitting
While we were on the road, we started to hear about house sitting but didn’t really think much of it. After our teaching contract in China was up in July 2013, we travelled on the Trans Mongolian and Trans Siberian Railway into Central Asia and Iran.
We weren’t sure what to do when that 5-month trip was over. So, we set up our house sitting profile with Trusted Housesitters and crossed our fingers.
Sunset in the Kaluts of Iran. We set up our housesitting profile during this trip
Within a week, we had received an offer to “Take care of a Divine Dog in the Caribbean”. We took the job and spent a good portion of 2014 in Grenada. And yes, he was the most divine dog.
Since then, we’ve taken care of dogs in Barbados, Grenada, and Costa Rica, while enjoying free accommodation and wonderful experiences along the way.
While we haven’t utilized the house sitting platform since 2016, it was a great way to supplement our income when we were getting Goats On The Road off the ground.
The best part, however, was being able to have a pet for a while — something that isn’t conducive to our nomadic lifestyle.
The diving dog, Spare. So many adventures with this sweet boy.
Why House Sitting?
When a homeowner goes away for a holiday or other reasons, they need someone to take care of their beloved fur baby and property. Most of the time there is an animal included in the job, but there are some cases where you’ll just be there to take care of the home.
In exchange for loving and caring for the pet(s), you’ll receive free accommodation in the owner’s home. Depending on the job, you may also receive a vehicle for you to use and payment.
The perks of this job are endless. Live and travel around the world for free while fully immersing yourself in the country and living like a local, rather than a tourist.
And, of course, enjoy the company of a furry friend!
One of our house sitting jobs in the Caribbean
Actionable Steps to Take
If you love animals, travelling around and are a responsible individual, then house and pet sitting may be right for you. Not all gigs are in exotic, tropical destinations — many are in the UK, USA, Australia, and Canada.
Create your house sitting profile with all of the required information (and video). The homeowners will contact you, or you can reach out and apply for the job.
We’ve always utilized Trusted Housesitters for our gigs. Have a look at the current jobs on offer, and sign up here to receive the latest housesitting jobs directly in your email inbox.
4. Freelance Writing
A great way to make an income from writing is through freelance gigs — either in print or online. This is another one of the stepping stones we utilized along the way to earn an income remotely.
Our First Freelance Writing Jobs
During our first house sitting and pet sitting job in 2014, we were growing Goats On The Road. In order to get our name out there, we decided to reach out to a few online travel magazines and companies to see if we could share our travel stories with them.
Working from a hammock – not the most ergonomic, but Nick loved it
Our first freelance gig was with a well-known travel website where we received a twice-weekly column! We were over the moon. At the time, we earned $50 per article from them.
A couple of months after that freelance job, we received another consistent offer with a credit card and finance website. We wrote 4 posts a month for them while receiving $250 per article.
Our articles were also published in the Southeast Asia Backpacker Magazine, The Globe & Mail newspaper, and the Vancouver Sun newspaper in Canada. We were thrilled to see our names in print!
We received a few more writing jobs back then in 2014 and 2015 and for a while, we were writing 30 articles a month. This gave us a great income boost, and combined with house sitting, we were able to travel around Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean.
Working with wine in the evening – had to get those freelance posts done!
Actionable Steps To Take
No matter what topics you’re interested in, there will be a company that you can write for. Freelance writing is a great way to promote your brand, gain links back to your website, and earn an income.
Of course, even if you don’t have your own website, you can still be a freelance writer.
We’ve compiled a list of the top websites that pay aspiring travel writers. The pay varies depending on the magazine (in print and online), but you can find a gig that pays upwards of $4,000!
Another great way to find writing opportunities (on a variety of topics), is through the company called Solid Gigs. They siphon through all the online freelance job boards and only send you the top 1% legitimate, well-paid gigs to your inbox each week. To find out more, click here and use promo code GOATS2 to receive the first month for just $2.
Finally, you could sign up for Upwork and see what sort of writing jobs are available on that platform.
5. Creating Digital Products
Why not create a product that you own and can sell to your audience? Work hard to create a useful digital product, and reap the benefits of selling it for years afterward.
After a few years in the blogging world, we started to realize that we were quite knowledgable on the topic and that we were able to quickly and easily grow and monetize websites.
So, we decided to teach new bloggers how to start a website, and how to then turn that website into a profitable business. We created digital products to share with our audience to ultimately help them on their path to blogging success.
Nick working on his course for Goats On The Road
The eBooks
First, we started with what seemed easiest at the time, an online book. Ebooks were really popular (and still are), but even more so back when we created them in 2016.
We chose to make our first ebook free for people who sign up for our weekly newsletter. It’s titled: 101 Ways to Earn Money and Pay For Travel and you can still get it for free if you sign-up.
That was our first ebook and once we got the hang of it, Nick decided to put all of our best blogging tips together into one place. The second ebook is titled: “The Absolute Best Blogging Tips: Advice For Making Money From Your Blog”.
Initially, we were selling that ebook on Amazon, but since then, we’ve changed and it’s now available on our site for $4.99.
Online Courses
From ebooks to online training! We kicked it up a notch and went from writing to video. Virtual courses and training are much more interesting, and valuable for students.
We remember all too well the mistakes we made when we first started our website in 2012. Our Beginner’s Blogger Course aims to help bloggers and website owners start their sites quickly, and correctly. We wish this was available when we started out!
It took a while to get it “right” and to figure out how to do a video course vs. just a simple ebook.
Nick updates the course from time to time to keep it current, and ultimately, it’s been our top product to date. We offer the course for free when people start a website through our link. Or, we also sell if for $69.
Start a website through our link, get a discount on hosting, and our course and ebook for free
The second video course is more advanced. Once you have your website up and running, you’ll want to take it to the next level by learning how to monetize it and have your content seen. The best way to do this is through search engine optimization (SEO).
Nick created an actionable, useful digital course and has received amazing feedback from his students! Check out the free 1-hour mini-training, to see if it’s right for you.
Actionable Steps to Take
If you feel comfortable on camera and are somewhat savvy when it comes to computers and all things digital, then I recommend skipping the ebook stage and heading straight for online course creation. It’s more lucrative as well.
But, if you feel you want to ease into creating digital products by making an ebook first (like we did), then I recommend Canva. It’s free, easy to use and there are quite a few graphics and design options available to make a nice book.
When it comes to online courses, we use and recommend the program Teachable. It’s easy for you as the course creator to set up, upload your content, and manage. And, it’s really simple for the course students to navigate as well.
Create your own digital products and give yourself the freedom to work from anywhere in the world…such as Argentina.
Initially, we had a membership plugin attached to Goats On The Road. It was very difficult to set up, and in the end, it wasn’t compatible with our website and we had so many issues! Stick to Teachable and save yourself the headache and to keep your own website running fast and smooth.
In Conclusion
There you have it! The past 8 years of our lives in a nutshell. I hope you found our story and the steps we’ve taken to get to this point in our lives useful and inspiring.
As you can see, our journey to location independence started long before the creation of this website. Every step of the way we’ve learned something new, been inspired to try another creative outlet, and have always followed our Personal Legend and the path of least resistance.
Thanks for reading and being a part of our Tribe!
If you’re searching for ways to work remotely and become more financially and location independent, give some (or all!) of the ideas in this article a try. You never know what you may discover. As always, thank you for reading.

Read on to learn how it’s possible to get a job teaching English online without a degree, and which schools and companies are the best to work for.
What Are The Requirements to Teach Without a Degree?
First of all, if you want to teach ESL online with no degree, you’ll want to make sure you have a TEFL certification.
While it’s not imperative that you have one, five out of the ten companies on this list require you to have a TEFL — so, if you get certified, you’ll be able to apply for 100% of the jobs, rather than just 50% of them.
Many people want to work from home (or abroad) while having the opportunity to set their own working hours. Because of this, competition is higher than ever.
Give yourself a leg up on your fellow teachers and get your TEFL to better your odds of getting hired. Click here for a list of the top 7 affordable and recognized companies.
Apart from being able to speak the English language, and (in some cases) having a TEFL certificate, the other requirements are quite simple.
With so many other teachers and tutors vying for jobs, you’ll want to make yourself really stand out.
Be enthusiastic and ensure proper pronunciation and enunciation when speaking.
Wear nice clothes and make sure you’ve had a shower! Ladies, do your hair and make-up, and guys, make sure your hair and beard are trimmed nicely or clean shaved.
When it comes to creating your introductory video it’s important to put your best foot forward. This is what your potential students will see, so you want to make a good impression.
You’ll want to make sure that the sound and lighting are good for your video as well.
Have a look at your background. Ideally, it’s not your kitchen or bedroom, but a plain white wall, or a wall with a map of the world or other props nearby.
Apart from giving a good first impression, make sure all of the questions are answered and the required sections are filled in on your profile.
Basically, just do everything to better your odds of getting hired.

Founded in 2012, SkimaTalk is geared towards adult students from around the world. This is great as it means you can interact with different cultures on a daily basis.
You’ll need to create an introductory video for your profile. This is what your potential students will see before deciding to book with you, so as I mentioned above, you’ll want to make it a good one!
When students book with you, they choose the class they want — pre-set SkimaTalk lesson or a free talk lesson.
With SkimaTalk lessons, topics include business English, exam preparation, English news, etc. Lessons are taught via Skype.
Something to consider with SkimaTalk is that you have to do 3 classes for free to ensure that you are a good fit for the platform.
Regardless, SkimaTalk is a good option if you’re a native English speaker but don’t have a university degree or a TEFL certification.
Requirements to Teach With SkimaTalk
You must be a native English speaker.
You must have a neutral accent.
You must be 18 years of age or older.
You’ll need to have a computer with a webcam and headset.
Have a reliable internet connection.
You must be professional, committed, and passionate about teaching.
Salary and Hours With SkimaTalk
You choose which hours you want to work, and you “open” time slots on your calendar.
Classes are 25 minutes each, and you must submit feedback for your student within 24 hours of the class.
Students are booked on a class-by-class basis, so you will probably have new students each day.
You set your own pay rate. New tutors charge between $7 – $10 per class, while more experienced tutors (and ones who have a TEFL course or other qualifications) charge around $10 – $15 per class.
Teachers are paid monthly via PayPal.

5. Cambly
Cambly is quite a bit different from the rest of the companies on this list. It’s also the easiest to get a job with but has one of the lower pay rates.
Basically, this is more of a free-flowing, conversational platform, without a rigid class schedule.
Students and teachers connect via the Cambly platform and simply have a conversation about whatever they want — sports, hobbies, food, movies, weather, etc.
The goal is to have your students practice their listening and speaking abilities and to be more comfortable in a real-life social situation.
It’s a great way to meet people from all over the world and learn about their lives in a more casual setting.
The downside of Cambly is that students leave reviews for the teacher, and the reviews aren’t moderated well enough.
So, if your student didn’t like you for no other reason than your haircut, they can give you a poor rating — which means a less desirable teacher profile, and therefore, fewer students wanting to connect.
Having said this, Cambly is a great option for those who want to teach English online without a degree, and without a TESOL/TEFL certification.
It’s also good for teachers who are looking for more flexibility and a more casual teaching setting.
Requirements to Teach With Cambly
You need to be a native (or near-native) English speaker.
Have a proper webcam, microphone, and lighting.
Have a fast internet connection.
Salary and Hours With Cambly
Tutors are paid $0.17 USD per minute or $10.20 USD per hour with Cambly.
The program tracks how long you are on your call.
You choose your own hours.
Payment is made via PayPal.

And actually, preference is given to teachers who can also speak those two languages.
The teaching and curriculum materials are provided for you, but you’re encouraged to bring your own flair to the class as well — based on your abilities and experience with teaching ESL.

7. Cafe Talk
The name of this company pretty much says it all — it’s like having a conversation with a friend over a coffee at a cafe.
The vibe is meant to be relaxed and focused on a conversation about different topics.
One of the things that sets Cafe Talk apart from the other companies on this list is that it’s not just a language learning platform.
As a tutor with Cafe Talk, you could teach music, art, hair & makeup, health & fitness, and much more.
But, since this post is about teaching English online without having a degree, I’ll stick to that.
Create your own lessons, set your own rates and start teaching!
Classes are available 24 hours a day, and the students you teach will most likely be adults from Japan who need to learn English for business purposes.
Cafe Talk is an especially good option for tutors who don’t have a TEFL or a university degree, but can speak Japanese.
Note: currently as of May, 2020, these are the top lessons that Cafe Talk is interested in:
English lessons for children (Japanese as a 2nd language highly preferred)
Academic Tutoring for Japanese schoolchildren (must speak Japanese)
English, Korean & Chinese lessons by native tutors who speak Japanese as a 2nd language
Requirements to Teach With Cafe Talk
You must be a Native English speaker (or native speaker of the language you’re teaching).
Teachers who can also speak Japanese, Korean or Chinese are given preference.
University degree and TEFL are not required (but, would look good on your profile).
You must be 20 years of age or older.
You must have a desktop computer or a tablet (no smartphones).
You’ll need a Skype account.
Salary and Hours With Cafe Talk
You set your own rates, but many tutors charge between $14 USD and $36 USD per hour.

8. iTalki
Italki has over 5 million students and 10,000 high-quality teachers teaching more than 130 languages!
Again, we’ll stick to teaching ESL on this post, but if you were fluent in French, Spanish, Russian, Mandarin, etc. then you could earn double (or triple!) depending on your language abilities.
The learning platform was founded in 2007 and has grown substantially since then.
As with PalFish (above), there are 2 different types of profiles you could have on italki: Professional Teaching profile or Community Tutor profile.
If you have prior teaching experience, training, certificates, and qualifications, then you can apply to be a Professional Teacher and teach a structured lesson plan — you must have a degree or a TEFL for this.
If you don’t, then you would be considered a Community Tutor and would have more casual conversations — you must be a native speaker.
Those who qualify as a Professional Teacher are given priority.
Classes are taught through Skype, Google Hangouts or Facetime.
Requirements to Teach With italki
As I said above, there are two types of profiles/teachers on Italki, and the requirements vary for each.
You must have a TEFL or a university degree (for Professional Teacher profile).
You must be a native speaker of the language you are going to teach (or be at the C2 level).
Have fast and reliable internet.
Have a microphone and webcam.
You must be at least 18 years old.
Salary and Hours With italki
You set your own pay rate.
Most tutors start around $8 – $12 per class to attract students, but you can up the price later.
Classes are 30, 45, 60 or 90 minutes long.
You make your own teaching schedule.
Teachers are paid by PayPal or Payoneer.

Tutors choose between teaching English courses for adults, children and teenagers, or business English. Lessons are taught 1-on-1 with your student.
Tutlo isn’t one of the higher paying companies out there, but since the lessons are pretty rigid, it makes the teaching job easier for you.

10. Amazing Talker
Amazing Talker is hiring tutors for more than 58 languages, but again, we’ll stick to English in this article!
If you’re a native English speaker, an expat in a native English speaking country, or have an English associated degree, then you can apply to teach.
Founded in Taiwan, this one-on-one teaching platform connects students with teachers based on the student’s learning goals.
Using the messaging app provided by Amazing Talker, teachers connect with the potential students ahead of time to see what their goals for the class are, and to prepare the necessary materials. Then, the actual lesson is taught on Zoom.
You can set your own rates, and create your own hours with Amazing Talker.
Requirements to Teach With Amazing Talker

So, it sort of counts as being a school you can teach ESL with no degree!
This is one of the higher paid schools on this list, which is why you’re required to have your degree, or be enrolled in university.
You’ll teach four Chinese students per class, aged 4 – 12 and you must be from the USA or Canada — teaching on Beijing time can be a bit of a challenge.

In Conclusion
As you can see, there are many reputable, high-paying companies that you can work for without having a teaching certification!
But, as I mentioned at the beginning of this article, these companies do charge a commission so take that into account when setting your class rates.
What’s interesting is that many of these platforms aren’t based out of China (a lot of the online teaching platforms are), meaning you won’t have to deal with time zone issues if you’re from North America, and you’ll have the option of meeting people from a variety of countries around the world.
I hope this list of companies and schools gave you the inspiration and information you needed to get started teaching today.

10 Requirements For Online English Teaching Jobs
If you’ve spent time researching ways to work remotely, you’ve probably heard about teaching online. This is an awesome way to join the laptop lifestyle movement and work from anywhere, but you might be wondering about the requirements for a job teaching English online.
With so many companies out there to choose from, including many freelance English teacher marketplaces, there isn’t one set of requirements for teaching online.
This is great news!
It means that as long as you speak English fluently and are willing to put in a bit of work, there’s a good chance you’ll find an online English teaching gig that fits your credentials.
In this post, I’ll break down some common requirements for online teaching jobs as well as the alternatives that exist.
Teacher Background Requirements
There are a few requirements that pretty much every company will ask for.
You Must Be a Native English Speaker
For the most part, online English companies require that teachers are Native English speakers. This means that you grew up in a country where English is the primary language spoken and it is your first language.
There are exceptions to this with some companies.
In some cases, you can teach English if you are fluent in English or if you have a C2 proficiency certification. You will usually have to demonstrate this by providing a speaking sample. The evaluator will listen to ensure that you have fluent speaking skills, correct grammar, and a neutral accent.
Unfortunately, the pay is often less for positions that hire fluent speakers in addition to native speakers. This can be annoying when you’re starting out but there are opportunities to earn more with time.
Here are two options for companies that will hire fluent speakers in addition to native English speakers.
PalFish – Palfish is a freestyle conversation platform that hires fluent English speakers. You must have a neutral accent to apply because part of the application process is submitting a 30-second speaking sample. PalFish Freetalk focuses on teaching English to adults in China.
iTalki – With iTalki, you’ll create a teacher profile on their language marketplace website. There are no formal requirements to be a community tutor except that you must be fluent or C2 level proficient in the language you are teaching. You’ll make all your own lesson plans and activities and you can teach more than one language if you want.

You Must Be From a Native English Speaking Country
Some online teaching companies have nationality requirements that teachers must meet. Often, this means that certain jobs are only available to teachers from native English speaking countries. Some companies only hire teachers from the United States and Canada.
While these companies (such as VIPKID) usually don’t require that teachers are physically in a certain location to teach, teachers might have to provide a passport or other verification of nationality in order to be hired.
In general, when companies say they only hire teachers from native English speaking countries, they are referring to the following countries: the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and sometimes South Africa.
That said, there are a few online ESL tutoring companies that hire teachers without restrictions on nationality. If you are an English speaker from a non-native English speaking country, you can consider the following options:
PalFish Freetalk – Palfish has three programs: the PalFish Official Kids Course, Palfish Philippines, and PalFish Freetalk. While the PalFish Official Kids Course only hires teachers from Native English speaking countries, Freetalk is more lenient. You can be from anywhere as long as you are a fluent speaker with a neutral accent.
Cambly – There are no nationality requirements to teach English online with Cambly.
iTalki – The community tutor program on iTalki does not have any nationality or residence requirements. You can be from anywhere as long as you are a fluent or C2 Proficient level speaker.
Online English Teachers Usually Need a Bachelor’s Degree
Most online English platforms require that teachers have at least a bachelor’s degree. The degree can be in any subject. It doesn’t have to be related to teaching.
Some companies are quite strict about this and won’t accept applications without a BA degree, even in situations where the candidate has teaching experience. Since so many of these large companies have automated hiring processes, there isn’t a chance to appeal on a case-by-case basis.
But if you don’t have a BA degree, don’t worry! There are still quite a few options for online teaching companies you can explore.
The following companies will hire teachers without a BA degree:
PalFish – You can be a PalFish Freetalk or a PalFish Official Kids course teacher without a BA degree. The Kids Course program pays more than Freetalk.
Cambly – Cambly hires native English speakers to teach adults around the world. Cambly is unique because they are one of the only companies mentioned in this post that doesn’t focus mainly on the Chinese market. No experience and no degree needed.
iTalki – You don’t need a BA degree to create a community tutor profile on iTalki
SkimaTalk – Skimatalk is open to teachers who are native English speakers from native English speaking countries. They do not require a degree, a teaching certification, or any teaching experience at this time.
Most Companies Look For Some Form of Teaching Experience
On the application pages for most online English teacher companies, they say that teachers must have teaching experience. This might be discouraging to people who are new to the teaching world, but usually this doesn’t mean traditional classroom instruction.
Very often, online ESL companies will count tutoring, mentoring, coaching, babysitting, and other types of activities with children toward your “teaching experience.”
Of course, having traditional classroom experience is a huge plus, but you’ll likely be qualified for most jobs if you have worked with children in some kind of leadership role.
If you don’t have any of the kinds of experiences mentioned above, consider volunteering at your local after school program to get this qualification.

Online English Teachers Usually Need a TEFL Certification
Having a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certification is a great idea when applying to online teaching jobs. While it’s not required for all online teaching jobs, you will have more choices and potentially a higher starting pay rate.
A TEFL certification means that you’ve gone through training in how to teach English to students who speak another language. You can get TEFL certified online or in-person through training programs around the world.
TEFL courses can vary from a few weeks to several months. They range in price from a few hundred dollars to over a thousand dollars depending on the company you go with and the level of certification you want to pursue.
You can compare some popular TEFL courses online here.
Most online ESL companies want teachers with a TEFL certification. Sometimes, companies will look for either a TEFL certification or a traditional teaching degree.
VIPKID is a notable exception to the TEFL certification requirement. If you don’t have a TEFL certification, you can still apply to VIPKID. Before you can teach your first class, you’ll need to complete their in-house VIPKID TESOL course.
This course will make you eligible to teach online on their platform, though I’m unsure if it transfers to other companies since it’s not as in-depth as other full-length TEFL programs.
If you aren’t TEFL certified and aren’t able to get certified, you can still apply to teach on Cambly or list your services on a teacher marketplace like iTalki.
But if you’re able to, I’d recommend getting TEFL certified. You’ll learn more about strategies for teaching students who speak other languages and you’ll have more job options to choose from.
There are numerous TEFL courses out there, so you’ll want to make sure you choose a reputable, legitimate company to get certified with. I list the top 6 companies (plus the one that I personally went with), in my article: 6 Best Online TEFL Courses For English Teachers.
Online ESL Teachers Should Be Available During High Demand Class Times
Online English teachers need to be available when their students want to take classes. Since many online English companies offer lessons to students in China, this means that teachers need to be online for classes during the afternoons and evenings, China time.
Some companies also require that teachers open a minimum amount of class time slots per week. If you sign up with one of these companies, make sure you can commit to consistently opening up time slots for the duration of your contract.
Technology and Gear Requirements to Teach English Online
If you meet the teacher criteria above, the next thing you’ll need is the proper gear and technology to teach English online. Learn more about the equipment you’ll need to teach online in my article, here.
High-Speed WiFi
A high-speed internet connection is a must for any online job. This is especially true for online teaching since your lessons happen in real-time. Because your job is streaming with a student who could be anywhere in the world, you’ll probably need more internet power than other digital nomads.
Most online teaching companies recommend that you have an internet speed of at least 20 Mbps. You can test your internet speed by using a website like www.speedtest.net.
When I’m travelling, I breathe easily if I see more than 10 Mbps at my accommodation. I’ve successfully taught with lower speeds, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Occasional internet flickers and lags can be frustrating and distracting for your students.
Most online teaching companies also recommend that you teach with a wired connection instead of over WiFi. If you have access to your router, you can establish a wired connection by using an ethernet cord. Wired connections are usually faster and have fewer drops.
Once, on a six-month backpacking trip, I traveled with a (not kidding) 100-foot ethernet cord in my backpack. As you can probably imagine, I got some strange looks at airport security!
Unfortunately, I never ended up staying anywhere where I had access to the router to connect my ridiculously long cord, but if I had I would’ve used it. I also might have won some kind of award for the most obnoxious person in the hostel, but at least my online classes would have been well connected!
That being said, WiFi is definitely sufficient for teaching online if it’s all you have. As long as you’re seeing speeds above 10 Mbps, you’ll be good to go.

A Laptop With a Webcam
Most modern laptops with webcams will be perfectly sufficient for your online teaching jobs. There are a few companies that even let you teach from a tablet or phone. Make sure to check the technical requirements for your company of choice before applying to make sure your gear is compatible.
If you can’t find those requirements online, a good way to test is to see if your computer can support skype calls. If it handles skype smoothly and your camera quality looks clear, there’s a good chance you’ll be able to teach also.
A Headset With Microphone
Another important piece of teaching equipment is your headset with a microphone. Headsets are required for most online teaching jobs because they prevent an annoying feedback sound for you and the student. They also reduce distracting background noises and make it easier for you to hear each other.
There are plenty of quality headsets out there. You can go really fancy with it and buy a top of the line Bluetooth headset, but even the earbuds that come with most phones are pretty high quality these days. Just make sure you are using some kind of headset for a clearer audio experience.
Props And Classroom Decorations
Depending on the age of your students, your company might require that you use props and classroom decorations. VIPKID, for example, will want you to have some academic and kid-friendly decorations on the wall behind you while teaching. During the interview, they expect teachers to use at least three props.
If you’re teaching younger students, a few good props to have in your online teacher toolbox are:
A dry erase board and markers
A set of ABC flashcards or an ABC chart
A puppet (this helps demonstrate conversation skills since you can “talk” to the puppet)
If you’re teaching adults, you won’t have as many props in the mix, but using visual teaching aids is still important. If you’re teaching older students or adults, consider using:
A dry erase board and markers
Photos of the topics you’re discussing or scenes like a house, a mall, or a park
Worksheets or activities that are printed out large enough for the student to see on the webcam
A Positive Teaching Mindset
While most aspects of online teaching – like being able to work from anywhere in pajama pants and making your own schedule – are huge perks, it isn’t always sunshine and roses.
Teaching online can be challenging at times. Online teachers need to have a patient disposition and be able to lead a classroom, even when students aren’t excited or are struggling to learn the material.
You’ll likely face technical issues outside of your control. You might have to keep teaching even if you’re under the weather. And depending on your time zone, you might be doing it all very early in the morning.
Even though I love my job, I don’t think I’ll ever get used to singing a cheerful ABC song at top volume at 4:30 am. That’s why having a positive teaching mindset is so important.
Online English teachers have a lot of responsibility. You’re in charge of helping a child learn another language, a skill that could open up opportunities for them in the future.
For this reason, teachers should be excited, passionate, and ready to roll with the punches if need be. You should have a genuine interest in working with children if you decide to sign up for a company that teaches kids, and you should enjoy helping other people achieve those “lightbulb moments.”
Learning a language is hard, so you’ll need to be patient and able to put a positive spin on a lesson even if the student isn’t having the breakthroughs you want them to have.
At the end of the day, one of the most important jobs a teacher has is inspiring confidence. Students should feel supported and encouraged, and it’s up to the teacher to create an environment where that can happen.
Quick Look: Popular Teaching Companies and Their Requirements
Throughout this post, I’ve mentioned several teaching companies and their requirements. I wanted to you have all that information in place. In the section below, I’ll give you a quick look at the basic requirements for several popular online teaching companies.

PalFish Freetalk Requirements
PalFish Freetalk is open to fluent English speakers. They do not have any nationality requirements but they do look for a neutral-sounding accent. To become a PalFish Freetalk Teacher you should also have:

Classes are held through your smartphone via the Palfish App. Teachers must be able to download the app and should use a headset when speaking to students.
PalFish Official Kids Course Requirements
In addition to the Freetalk program, PalFish also offers an Official Kids Course. The Official Kids Course is only open to native English speakers from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, or Australia. To become an Official Kids Course teacher, you’ll need
A TEFL Certification or Teaching License

Experience teaching or working with kids
Like Freetalk, the Official Kids Course is taught through your smartphone. Teachers will need to download the PalFish App in order to teach.
Cambly Requirements
To become a Cambly teacher, you must be fluent in English. You’ll also need a reliable computer or laptop and a consistent internet connection.
iTutor Group
iTutor Group hires teachers with a BA degree or higher. You’ll need a TEFL certification or a year or more of formal teaching experience. iTutor Group requires that teachers are able to work a minimum of 5 hours per week. Teachers should have a reliable computer and internet access.
iTalki Requirements
There are two kinds of teachers on iTalki, Community Tutors and Professional Teachers. To become a community tutor, you need to be a native English speaker or a fluent speaker with C2 Level Proficiency. You’ll also need to create a 1-3 minute introductory video.
Professional Teachers are also required to be a native English speaker or a fluent speaker with C2 proficiency. In addition, professional teachers need to have either a bachelor’s degree, a TEFL certification, or a teaching license. They will also be required to submit a CV with previous related experiences.
Now You’re Ready to Teach
There you have it! Now that you know the requirements for the main online English teaching companies, all that’s left to do is apply to become a teacher. VIPKID is the most recognized, reputable and popular company, while Qkids and EF Education First are second. The others are good options if you don’t have a degree, or if you aren’t from a country that speaks English as a first language. Learn more about teaching English online in our article here.

How To Make Money From Home: 21 Lucrative Side Hustles
Trying to figure out how to make money from home isn’t easy. If it were, hardly anyone would choose to wake up to an alarm and commute two hours to and from work every day. Offices would be a thing of the past and the laptop lifestyle would be the norm.
Even though more and more people are learning how to make money from home, the trend hasn’t yet completely taken over. This is partially because people who want to do this inevitably have to navigate the cyber minefield of get-rich-quick schemes and fake money-making scams.
We’ve personally tried dozens of side hustles, and when we were writing our book of 101 Best Travel Jobs, we interviewed countless people who have figured out how to make money from home by picking up a side job.
We’ve already written about online jobs that can earn thousands per month and how to get paid to write online as a freelance writer, but those posts were more focused on working while on the road and getting paid to travel. But what about people who are at home right now, trying to save money for travel?
This article is all about how to make money from home and how to make money online so you can work in your pyjamas (when possible) and make some extra cash on the side of your day job.
In this post, I’m not going to share any jobs that you can’t actually get. I’m not going to pretend that any of them will get you rich and I’m not going to say you have to do all of them in order to earn money.
These are real ways that you can learn how to make money from home, whether you just want to earn an extra few hundred dollars a month with a lucrative side hustle, or if you want to completely quit your job and work remotely. This post is for you.
This article has been updated December 2019.

Why Make Money From Home?
Before we learned how we could make money from home, we were working long shifts at jobs we didn’t enjoy. Dariece worked at a law firm and I spent time both working on oil rigs and working in a plastic packaging plant. The shifts were long, we hated the commute and despite earning a decent living by Canadian standards, we had a hard time getting ahead.
Fast forward 10 years and we’ve quit our jobs and are earning more than double what we were, but now we only make money from home, we travel all year round and we only work around 20 hours per week, maximum. We take holidays when we want, we wake up when we want and we aren’t stuck in traffic every day.
Our home office is now wherever we choose to be. Currently, I’m writing this post from a beach house in the Caribbean, looking out over our pool and onto the sea. I’m not saying this to brag. I just want to show that it’s possible to earn money from home and actually turn the lucrative side hustles that I list in this post into a full-time income.
If we can do it, anyone can. We don’t have university degrees, we didn’t come from rich families and we didn’t know the first thing about working for ourselves before we started down this path.
The fact is that we researched how to make money from home through doing Google searches and found many different websites with many different jobs (some real and some fake) and eventually figured it out.
Me at my previous job. I would never go back.
In this post, I’m going to list only the jobs that I know are legitimate, and that I know can earn real money.
Let’s begin! Below are 21 jobs that you can start today and earn money from home:
1. Start a Blog (The Best Way To Make Money From Home)
Probably the most lucrative way to earn money from home, blogging can open up countless doors to money-making potential and is a fun way to practice writing, marketing and photography.
We started this blog in 2012, without the slightest knowledge of blogging and today it earns as much as $20,000 per month through advertising, affiliate marketing, product sales, and sponsorships.
Of course, in order to earn that much, we’ve had to work around 20 hours per week on our blog, making it more than a side hustle, but it is possible to earn a few hundred dollars from a new blog in less than a year.
If you can build your audience to 25,000 monthly page views (quite easily done in under a year if you know what you’re doing), you can place Mediavine ads on your website, just like the ones you see on this post.
With 25,000 sessions you’d earn around $480 per month from those ads alone, and that’s not even taking into consideration other ways you can earn money through your blog. This is definitely not a way to get rich quick. You’ll have to publish a couple of articles every week and market your blog so that you can boost your blog traffic. But it is possible to earn money after just a few months.
Click Here to start a blog and get our 4-Part Video Beginner Blogger Course and 200-Page Beginner Blogger ebook for free. These in-depth tools will show you how to grow a blog and monetize it so that you can earn money from home as a blogger!
The best part about blogging is that you can blog about pretty much everything. If you love travel (like me), you can blog about travel. Or you can earn money by blogging about parenting, DIY, cooking, fashion, dogs, or pretty much anything else you can think of.
Steps To Take Now:
Purchase a domain name and start a blog now for just $59 (Click Here)
Use our course to learn how to design and build a professional blog
Write posts, market and grow using the tips in our course
In my opinion, if you want to figure out how to make money from home, starting a blog is the single best way to turn online work into a full-time income. I think everyone should have a blog as an outlet for their creativity, a way to share their knowledge and a way to create viable and reliable income streams from home.
2. Teach English Online
This is probably my second favourite side hustle that you can utilize if you want to learn how to make money from home.
Teaching English online can actually be quite lucrative. To start, you’ll need to get TEFL certified, which is quite easy and doesn’t take too long. MyTefl has a great 120 hour course that you can do from home. Once certified, we recommend becoming a VIPKID teacher. This is one of the best services available online and jobs can pay as much as $22 / hour.
To get a job with VIPKID, you’ll have to apply, fill out an application and pass an interview, but once you do that you can easily find work on the platform. Unfortunately, the service is currently only for people from Canada and the United States.
If you’re from the UK, you should look into EF Education First which is an excellent company to work for.

3. Rent a Room on Airbnb
As a traveller, I’ve used Airbnb many times to find a well priced apartment while on the road, but I also have quite a few friends who are earning a nice living from renting out their spare room or a second property as Airbnb hosts. A few of our friends in the UK earn a lot of money by doing this and it’s a great way to make money from home.
Depending on where you live (and your financial situation), you could even purchase a second apartment just to rent out on a nightly rate on Airbnb. Because the nightly rate is so much more than a long-term rental, most often you can pay off the mortgage and end up with as much as $1000 / month in your pocket.
Steps To Take Now:
Sign-up for Airbnb as a host
List your home at a lower rate at first
Accept as many guests as possible on short stays to get your review score up
4. Uber & Lyft
These two companies have taken over the rideshare world and have changed local transportation as we know it. But they’re not just convenient for those who want to get from point A to point B in a car, they’re also great ways to earn money from home… well, from the road.
According to the Uber website, you’ll need the following:
Be at least 21 years of age
Have at least one year of driving experience (3 years if you are under 23 years old)
Have a valid driver’s license
Use an eligible 4-door vehicle
Steps To Take Now:
Register as an Uber or Lyft driver (meeting the requirements above and uploading required documents)
Get an UBER inspection at your local Green Light Location (Click Here and “select city” in the top right of the screen to see locations)
Download and Sign-in to the Uber or Lyft Driver app and pick up your first customer(s)
5. Delivery
There are plenty of delivery services available these days that make it easy for pretty much anyone to earn money from home.
With services like Door Dash and UberEATS you can earn money from home (or from your motorbike) on your own schedule by delivering take-out orders in your town.
Some people have earned as much as $4,000 / month ($24 / hour) by working a delivery, but if you’re doing it on the side of your full-time job, you can probably expect a few hundred extra bucks in your pocket each month.
Requirements for DoorDash & UberEATS:
You must be 18 years or older
Have access to a vehicle or bicycle (any car, truck, motorcycle, or scooter)
Own an iPhone or Android smartphone
Have a valid Driver’s licence
Valid insurance — name on the policy
Provide a social security number (for a background check)
Pass a background and driving record check
Complete an orientation online or in-person
Steps To Take Now:
Register as a delivery person for DoorDash or UberEATS
Meet all requirements above and pass background & driving check
Download the Dasher or UberEATS app and start delivering for money
6. Online Surveys
Many companies will pay internet users to complete their surveys. Internet surveys offer businesses and advertisers useful data to help them understand their potential clientele.
If you Google: “get paid to complete surveys”, you’ll probably get a thousand results. Unfortunately, many of these results are complete scams, so you do have to be careful when taking paid online surveys.
Some of the main sites to check out:
SwagBucks
PrizeRebel
American Consumer Opinion
SurveyJunkie
InboxDollars
As surveys take a bit more time than watching ads, it’s more difficult to make a lot of money from this strategy, at it may not be the most lucrative side hustle, but there are reports of people earning over $1,000 per month by completing surveys.
Steps To Take Now:
Head to one of the sites above and create an account
Complete different tasks in order to earn money
Learn which tasks yield the most reward for the least amount of work and do those frequently
7. Yard Work & Landscaping
Okay so mowing a lawn doesn’t sound like a very luxurious job for an adult, but if you have a bit of experience in lawn care and yard work, you can actually earn a pretty good living in your local neighbourhood.
Offer to not only mow lawns but do the jobs that the young kids in the area can’t safely do themselves, like trimming hedges and using power landscaping tools.
Many people will be happy to pay $20+ for someone to come and work on their yard for an hour. Get a few of these jobs and the income can quickly add up.
If you love landscaping and gardening, but you still want to learn how to make money from home, then landscaping may be perfect for you.
Steps To Take Now:
Purchase the appropriate lawn care tools (or request to use homeowners’)
Put up flyers or place your ads in local Facebook communities and groups
Do landscaping work in your neighbourhood and get paid
8. Vehicle Ads
According to Wrapify and Carvertise, you can earn up to $450 a month by wrapping your entire car in advertising. They offer a pretty unique service, but it can be a really simple way to earn money.
Earnings depend on the amount of advertising you place as well as the routes you drive and how many people are likely to see the ads, but an extra $450 per month for looking like a 4-wheel billboard is a pretty good deal!
To get started you’ll have to download the app, then meet the minimum driving requirements in a month. Once you pass, you’ll see your earnings tick up every time you have the app running while you’re behind the wheel.
Want to learn how to make money from home and love to drive? Why not get paid to drive around your city?

Steps To Take Now:
Visit Wrapify.com or Carvertise and download the app
Fill out the application which asks questions about where you drive and how long
Get your car wrapped in ads and get paid as you drive with the app
9. Rent Out Your Car
With services like HyreCar, Drivy (UK) and GetAround allowing people to list their cars on a rideshare type platform, there’s no reason why you can’t earn a bit of extra money from your vehicle. Even if you don’t have an extra car parked in your driveway, you can simply rent out your car for the hours you’re at work.
Your car will be automatically covered by insurance, the drivers are screened to have a good driving record and top earners make thousands of dollars per year. If you don’t mind letting someone borrow your car for a while, then this is a great way to make money from home.
Steps To Take Now:
Go to the HyreCar, Drivy or GetAround website and download the app
Add photos of your car and registration (and Uber / Lyft documents for HyreCar)
Complete an in-person vehicle inspection with the respective company
Get paid within 5 business days of your car being hired
Because most of these companies are only currently available in major US cities, I don’t think this is the best income stream for those new to learning how to make money from home, but if you fit the bill, it can be quite lucrative.
10. Child Care
You can make a good living by offering child care services on the side, either at your home, or in someone else’s.
According to Care.com’s study, the average hourly babysitting rate in San Francisco, for example, is $16.65, compared to the national average of $13.44 an hour.
In practice though, there are many child care jobs available that pay $18 / hour or more, and if the parents are okay with bringing their children to your house, you can have multiple children at once, bringing up the hourly pay considerably.
To find work, you can post up flyers in schools explaining your services, speak to friends to spread the word, and advertise on Facebook in your community. Be sure to list your available hours in the flyer. Because you’re doing this as a side hustle, it’s important that the parents know that you’ll be busy throughout the day and you’re not running a daycare.
Steps To Take Now:
Childproof your home (or plan to care for children in their own homes)
Get Child Care Certificate (or CDA) where applicable
Talk to your friends, put up flyers at schools, and place ads in local Facebook groups
Build your clientele and start earning money from home
11. Sell on Amazon
We personally make a few hundred dollars per month selling products on Amazon and it’s a great way to make money from home. If you’re not into creating physical products, consider creating a virtual product like an eBook or an online course. Click Here to set up an account on Amazon and start selling your products and services.
Once you have a few products available on your Amazon store, you may want to consider starting a basic website and advertising it on Facebook to see if you can get some more traffic to your pages and earn more money.
Steps To Take Now:
Sign up for an Amazon Services account
Create a digital product (I use Canva.com to create ebooks & PDF downloads)
Upload your product to Amazon and make it live
Promote your product on social media, using advertising or on your own website
12. Become a VA (Virtual Assistant)
We’ve paid VA’s as much as $1,500 per month for their work on this website, so we know that it can be a lucrative side hustle. Depending on your skill set, you may earn up to $15 / hour for your work and in most cases, the jobs are quick and easy to learn. Pretty much every website owner and blogger has a VA these days, so there is plenty of work available.
Try finding work on FlexJobs, SolidGigs, Fiverr, or joining a blogging community on Facebook and posting your services there.
When we were first figuring out how to make money online, we started with some VA Pinterest work and it became so lucrative that we still manage some accounts today. Learn about becoming a virtual assistant and how to find jobs in our article here.
Steps To Take Now:
Sign up for Fiverr, Upwork, FlexJobs, SolidGigs or post your jobs in relevant Facebook communities
Get paid when people need your services

13. Sell on Etsy
Etsy is the world’s top online platform for selling arts, crafts and handmade items. The top earners on the platform make as much as $70,000 per month, so yes… it’s a lucrative side hustle. But you really have to know how to grow a store and market it in order to make money on Etsy.
You’ll have to research your competition so that you can properly price out your products, then you’ll have to market them by setting up a Facebook page and rocking social media.
Once your shop is online, check out Etsy’s seller handbook and consider joining a team to help you learn the basics from other shop owners. You’ll need to learn how to take appealing photos of your items and how to write your shop description so that people will be inclined to buy from you.
For those who are creative and want to learn how to make money from home, this is a great option.
Steps To Take Now:
Sign up for Etsy and open a shop
Price out materials for your creations and choose a price that is worth your time (be sure to compare with your competitor’s price)
Upload beautiful photos to your shop and wait until people purchase
Take the next step by starting a blog on the topic, writing good content and driving more traffic to your shop through Google
14. Coaching & Online Courses
If you are an expert in a field, then you can take advantage of enormous online learning platforms like Teachable.com to expand your brand and get more work. Some of the top coaches and online course creators are earning over a million dollars per year, so this is another highly lucrative option. But your courses aren’t going to sell themselves.
While Teachable does a great job of displaying your courses to a relevant audience, you’ll still need to market your services in order to earn money. The best way to do this is by starting your own website and growing it so that you can sell your courses directly on your own site.
I have a Beginner Blogger Course for sale on our site, and while we don’t earn much money for the course directly because we give it away for free when people start a blog through this site, we have made over $6,000 / month indirectly from the course through affiliate sales.
I’ve also created an informative and actionable SEO Made Simple course, which includes 25 video tutorials, email training, VIP Facebook group and much more. Learn how to boost your traffic, legitimately. Click here for a free one-hour training session.
Steps To Take Now:
Sign Up for Teachable
Use their tools to record and create a useful course
Sell your course on their platform
15. Drop-Shipping
Dropshipping is another great way to make money from home. Basically dropshipping is a very low-risk way to start up a business selling products online.
Traditionally if you wanted to do this, you would have to create a product, market it, store it in a warehouse and ship it out yourself, while having to deal with refunds, returns, etc. This was a lot of work and the investments involved would make it unattainable for the average Joe or Joanne trying to earn money from home with a side hustle.
Finding a manufacturer will be one of the hardest things to do. Simply typing “drop shippers” into Google won’t give you very good results because only big drop shipping manufacturers that do business with big drop shippers will have the money to invest in SEO (search engine optimization), which allows their website to be seen first in Google.
Click Here to check out a great list of dropshipping suppliers that can help you get started.
Steps To Take Now:
Pick a lucrative product to sell
Search for a shipping supplier
Create a website and sell your products online
When figuring out how to make money from home, one of your main concerns should be the ease of starting the new venture. Because dropshipping requires a bit of planning and research, it may be a bit harder to first get into if you don’t have previous experience with manufacturers and eCommerce.
16. Freelance Writing
This is definitely one of my best ways to make money from home. Dariece and I were regular contributors to numerous publications such as Travel Pulse, WiseBread, and World Nomads. At the peak of our freelancing careers, Dariece and I were earning around $3,000 / month from writing for other sites.
We’ve since slowed down our freelancing, not because the jobs weren’t available, but because we’ve found better ways how to make from home (ie: this travel blog). If you’re looking for a job as a freelance writer, check out this list of 99 websites that pay freelance writers.
Steps To Take Now:
Click Here to view a list of websites that pay you to write
Apply for as many relevant writing jobs as possible
Try to land an ongoing job where you write X articles per month for a given publication or website
17. House Sitting & Pet Sitting
I guess by the very nature of house sitting, you’re not going to “make money from home” because you’ll have to stay in someone else’s home. But this is actually a great way to not only make money, but save it on accommodation costs.
While we were figuring out how to make money from home, we saw pet sitting as the ultimate job. It gave us the opportunity to lower our cost of living by getting a free car and free accommodation, and it allowed us to work on our online business (this blog).
We’ve usually just used house sitting as a way to get free accommodation, but there have been times that we were paid. In Canada, we know a person who earns $1,000 per month for house sitting, meaning she gets free accommodation PLUS a thousand bucks a month! That’s a pretty great deal.
Our House Sitting Home in The Caribbean
Considering that the average 2 bedroom apartment in Canada will cost around $1,200 / month, the savings and the income combined adds up to $26,400 per year. If you don’t mind spending your time in someone else’s home, this is a great way to make some extra money on the side.
Another option is to be more of a pet-sitter than a house sitter, through the same platform. Since you most likely don’t work on weekends, consider taking weekend pet-sitting jobs where you stay in someone’s home and care for their dog, cat, bird, fish, etc. while they are away.
Steps To Take Now:
Sign-up for TrustedHouseSitters.com (the largest house sitting network online)
Read our house sitting section to learn more about this job
Create a profile that’s appealing to pet and homeowners
Sign up for the mailing list and immediately email homeowners when you see a listing you want
18. Translation Work
Want to learn how to make money from home? Do you know multiple languages? There are plenty of websites and apps that will help you turn your skills as a polyglot into an excellent way to make money from home.
Websites like Gengo, Tranlate.com and Unabel are a great place to look for jobs and start earning money. According to Gengo, the average English translator earns $417 / month and you can choose your own hours making it a great side hustle.
Steps To Take Now:
Sign up for one or all of the sites listed above
Fill out an application and profile with your languages/credentials
Pass the interview and begin translating to make money from home
19. Be a Local Tour Guide
Are you passionate about your home town and know lots of cool places to take people? Why not run your own tours? With plenty of online tour sites like Vayable.com, ToursByLocals.com, Shiroube and Rent a Local Friend, it’s never been easier to earn money as a local tour guide.
Typically you’ll have to sign up for the platform and create a tour itinerary and you may not get a lot of work at first, but as you get more and more people leaving you 5-star reviews, you may find that you become very busy.
The pay schedule depends on what site you go with, but typically the website will take a percentage of your overall tour price.
For example, Rent a Local Friend charges a $100 annual subscription, which allows you to be featured on their site and helps you with getting the word out about your tour. Travelers pay 30% of the tour price on the site and 70% to you upon completion of your tour.
So, if you charge $300 for the day, the client will have paid $90 on the Rent a Local Friend website, and your payment is the $210 you collect at the conclusion of your tour.
Many tours on the website are going for around $300 for a full-day tour, so if you’re profiting $210 by the end of each tour and your day is 8 hours long, you’ll be earning over $26 / hour.
If you’re tour guiding as a side hustle, then you’ll probably only do it on weekends, but if you can manage a tour on both Saturday and Sunday, that will be an extra $1,680 in your pocket by the end of the month.
Steps To Take Now:
Sign up for one of the sites above
Upload your proposed itinerary
Once it’s accepted, you can begin leading tours to make money from home (well, it’s not really a way “how to make money from home” because you’re actually not at home, but you get the picture)
20. Teach Yoga
Teaching proper classroom yoga will require you to become certified as a yoga instructor, but you can sell your services on Teachable.com even if you’re not certified. I do recommend first getting certified, to help get more jobs, but if you’re a great teacher, knowledgable about yoga, and people like you, you’ll still be able to earn money from teaching yoga.
The best way to go about it is to first get certified and then create your online yoga course on Teachable. You may also want to create your own website for your yoga school and post the videos there, only available for premium purchase. Yoga websites can be very profitable and you’ll be earning money from home while helping people to live a healthier, happier life.
If you don’t want to use the Teachable platform, you can also create your own YouTube channel and request that people sign-up for Patreon in order to access your premium classes. This way you can earn more money for your classes, directly from your students.
Alternatively, you can start your own yoga website and then embed private YouTube videos there, only accessible for your paying students.
Steps To Take Now:
Set up your own website, use Patreon and YouTube or set up a course on Teachable.com
Upload regular videos and communicate with your students
Use Facebook ads and communities to try to send more customers to your classes
21. Start a Lucrative Side Hustle
Pretty much anything you’re passionate about can be turned into a side business, you just have to be creative and learn a bit about marketing. If you enjoy baking, sell your cupcakes. Love crafts? Sell them. Enjoy writing? It’s never been easier to sell books as it is today with sites like Amazon. Love animals? Start a dog-walking service.
You can easily create your own website in any niche using our free course and 5-minute set-up guide and within a few weeks, you could have your own cyber storefront.
Even if you don’t want to start a website, you can utilize social platforms like Facebook and Instagram to take photos and share your products with millions of potential customers.
Spend a little bit of money on advertising on Facebook and you may find that you can be profit positive, meaning the more you money you spend on ads, the more you make through sales.
I believe that the key to being truly happy is to never work for a living but to live for a living. If what you’re doing for work, truly makes you happy, inspires and fulfills you, then you won’t be spending 40 hours per week wishing the clock would move faster. Take what you’re passionate about and try to turn it into your lifestyle.
For Dariece and me, it was travel, but these days you can make anything into a side hustle. Thanks to the popularity of blogs and the availability of sponsorships and advertising, pretty much anything you love can be turned into a profitable website, or a lucrative side business.
If you want to learn how to make money from home, start taking the steps now. You don’t have to quit your job now, or ever, but you can begin building something on the side to help you earn some extra pocket cash and who knows, one day that pocket-money could turn into a full-time income.
