tdb boys taking care of pc as a cat? 🫢
Taking care of the purr-fect
After an accident in class the prefect turns in a cat for a day
Wc: 670
Note: I'm going to be honest, I just chose four off the top of my head jaja
Jin
He swears it's the one time he leaves his room for the week and somehow there is an intruder, a cute cat sleeping on his bed. He grabs you by the scruff and calls Thoma who hurriedly takes it from his hands and smooths its hair explaining the mess during class.
He rolls his eyes at the story of how the ghouls -surely vagastorm punks- asked you to help and you ended in the crossfire with a temporary shapeshifting potion, either way he grabs your back, now properly with a hand under your front paws and under your butt.
His family had a few cats, his dad allowed it if they were purebred as a status symbol, and his mom loved the fluffy things. Maybe that is why his usually soft spot turned softer.
Acting huffing and tsundere like lays down on the bed and lets you cuddle up to him, even covering you with his blankets without worrying much about hair sticking to it.
Every so often he texts things to Thoma ‘the cat is hungry, get them fish ‘jin, canned tuna isn't good for cats.’ ‘There's sushi tuna in the kitchen. Hurry’
The most spoiled cat for the day or so that you turned, ribbons as your collar so nobody mistakes you for a worker cat, cooked meat every meal, hair brushed every night -by thoma- and sleeping under many imported silk blankets.
Sho
There was a cat sleeping on Bonnie's seat and, somehow, she wasn't thrashing around for it to get out, quite opposite she seemed to be seeking out sunlight for you. It isn't until he gets closer and you wake up that he recognizes your eyes in the kitty's that he guessed it's you.
He is knocking down on Hyde's office asking about what happened to you and how long it's going to last, Hyde grabs you by the armpits and twists you around before throwing you back to Sho unworried and he guesstimates about a day or two.
He doesn't allow you inside his food truck because he respects food hygiene but you can sleep on the outside tables acting like a mascot, at first Subaru was quite open to touching you in this form until he saw your memories and figured it was you.
He now feeds two mouths, Bonnie and you, sorry Leo, your noodles will have to wait until he finishes the pulled pork bbq sandwich for Bonnie and your cat-friendly oil-free stir fry, die mad about it.
After one of the vagastorm students grabbed you to get you out of a spot on the couch and Sho dared him to meet him at the pit for that, after that nobody really touched you.
Yuri and Jiro
Some general students got called after the accident in class to check out the students who were well except a few scratches, they were called later when the students brought a cat claiming that it was the prefect.
Neither are very worried as it happened before but more interested in how similar your labwork would be to your human one so Yuri is drawing blood, doing ultrasounds to see if everything looks normal or similar to before (if you struggle to much because you are nervous or fear needles and try to scratch him he will make Jiro hold you as you claw at him. At least he doesn't hold it against you when you return to normal)
After that you can hang around mortkraken with a little note stuck on your fur saying ‘dr isami’s patient, do not feed’
Sorry if you like garlic, onions, chives or grapes, the same way they forbade chocolate for Lyca bc he is a wolf those foods aren't entering your mouth soon.
If Yuri is sitting down while writing or reading your test he allows you to lay on his lap and maybe he will rub your belly.
Jiro doesn't mind you climbing him so you can sit on his shoulders while he works and won't tell you anything. He asks teasingly if you wanted to be taller.

MONTH 0: WEEK 3
Dear pumpkin,
Your daddy and I just found out you’re already making a home in my tummy this morning. Amazing how things escalated, but we’re not complaining at all. I never thought you were the reason as to why I was suddenly feeling sick, thinking it was the sushi we ate the previous week. But turns out, I’m the only one feeling this way. The doctor told me you’re the size of a poppy seed right now. You’re so tiny… Can’t wait to hear your heartbeat angel and have sonograms of you. Your daddy is just as excited as I am. We all are, especially his colleagues. Love you so much, pumpkin.
“The lady back in the clinic, she told you to do this?” Manjiro peeked past your shoulder to see what you have written on paper. Hand absentmindedly rubbing your stomach, you hummed in agreement with a soft smile gracing your lips. Thoughts slightly distracted at the idea of a small life now growing inside of you, a product of you and your husband’s love. That and the endless nights of leaving Bonten’s headquarters earlier than the rest to have fun. While Manjiro never told you he wanted children this early, he was never opposed to the idea at all. Although, it did come as a surprise after today’s visit to the nearby clinic. And despite how hard he tried to remain emotionless, you definitely caught your husband shedding and wipe a tear out of happiness while he held your hand as the doctor announced your pregnancy.
“She said she did this with her firstborn many years back.” Relaxing into his palm that held the back of your neck, you watched as his onyx eyes read the words you wrote. A ghost of a smile on his lips. “I thought the idea is a good one. Not only for, you know, memories but for our little pumpkin, too. Something for them to read…”
“Pumpkin?”
You nodded. “Yeah, isn’t it a cute nickname? It’s better than to give them an odd one just to be unique, ‘ya know?”
“Would you also be writing that you’ve caused the scarcity of ice cream at the nearby 7-eleven?”
Whether he was joking or not, you couldn’t tell with the way he sounded so serious. Either way, you pouted at his words and crossed your arms together. “Wow, as if I’m the only one who ate ice cream these past few days.” Brow raised at him, you then squinted your eyes at your silent husband avoiding your piercing gaze. “I know you’re the one who ate my Häagen-Dazs, ‘Jiro. There’s no point in lying or dodging this.”
“I don’t know what you’re talkin’ about, angel.”
MONTH 1: WEEK 5
Dear little pumpkin,
Today was pretty unpredictable. I went to the clinic feeling a bit sad since your daddy said he might not make it to hear your heartbeat. If you will ask me why, please be patient since it isn’t something kids should know. Still, I will tell you once it is the right time. But just as I was about to head in, your daddy arrived with your Uncle Sanzu, as he would like to be called, in tow. Once again, I’ll tell you in full detail soon how chaotic it was. What matters is that we heard your adorable heartbeat. Your daddy cried at the sound of it and I did, too. You’re definitely growing day by day, my angel.
Eyes wide, your mouth was agape at the abrupt entrance of your husband and his right-hand man, Sanzu Haruchiyo. Blood splatters on their attire close to gleaming under the white light of the clinic. The mothers outside waiting for their turn along with their husbands were clearly suspicious and alarmed by their appearance. Who wouldn’t be at the sight of Bonten’s higher-ups and the evidence of their recent carnage in the clothing they wore? However, nothing mattered at that moment other than Manjiro's presence and the effort he had to exert to be here.
“I’m sorry if I wasn’t able to text you that I’ll be here,” Manjiro whispered, placing a kiss on your cheek before you were asked to lay on the bed. Those steely dark eyes never leaving you, ready to pounce on anyone who’d be stupid enough to hurt you while he’s around. “Was too caught up on getting here on time. Won’t happen again on the next visits, I swear.”
“It's okay, love. I’m just happy you’re here now,” you murmured, left hand in his and fingers intertwined with a squeeze. A comforting smile is what you shot him upon seeing how rigid his stance is while sitting on the stool beside you. “Don’t worry too much, ‘Jiro…”
“How can I not?” he whispered, still following your obstetrician’s every move. “You know I have a lot of enemies, angel—” The rest of his words died down when the hem of your shirt was lifted by the doctor. His thoughts were drowned by the initial fear of his enemies bursting through the door that Haruchiyo was guarding like an unmovable force. That was all that occupied and ran through his mind until a heartbeat broke through his noisy state of mind. Onyx irises locked with yours that were glassy as the sound of your baby’s heartbeat resounded in the four walls of the room. His grip on your hand tightened, although not painful or uncomfortable in any way. No, it was out of relief and other combinations of emotions that came out in the form of teardrops. “Angel, is that…?”
MONTH 2: WEEK 7
Dear darling pumpkin,
My love for you grows stronger as the days pass by. It hasn’t been easy waking up and feeling squeamish. Everything is changing, specifically mommy’s body to accommodate your nine-month stay. Sometimes, I eat food paired oddly that I normally wouldn’t even consider putting near my mouth. Thankfully, your daddy doesn’t say a word about it. You may see him as aloof at times, but he truly cares for us. This morning during breakfast, a rare sight of him cooking pancakes greeted me. And despite how he is rarely home due to the nature of his job, he comes back as much as he can and earlier than the usual times I’ve gotten used to seeing him. He can’t help but get excited to feel you kick soon. I kind of dread it though, cause some mothers say it will hurt at times. However, if it means you are healthy, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
You stifled a gasp, head buried further into the pillow. Sweat coated the flesh under your chin. Sensitive—your breasts were super sensitive that you were quite sure if Manjiro would pinch them one more time, you’d cry out. Heavy was his gaze, hands cupping and fondling your tits. This wasn’t a new occurrence since your husband has always been fixated on them ever since. What was new, however, was the idea of tasting milk from them once you were lactating revolving in his mind among other things. No matter how many times you told him it hasn’t happened yet, Manjiro couldn’t stop massaging your nipples.
“Love, I-I need to pee…”
“Wait,” he murmured, leaning down to suck on one of the peaks, eliciting a muffled whine from you. The heels of your feet digging into the mattress at the touch of his tongue, hot breath awakening goosebumps on the flesh. “Lemme play more. Don’t you miss me?” Mouth pressing a chaste kiss on your left tit, he grinned down at your flustered expression. “Weren’t you just complaining that they’ve become tender?”
“Yeah, but…” Softly hissing, you fought back a moan when he popped the breast into his mouth, sucking on it gently. Ignorant to your nudges for him to leave you alone so you could pee. “‘J-Jiro, I really, really, need to go.”
MONTH 3: WEEK 9
Dear precious pumpkin,
Sometimes I couldn’t sleep at night because I worry about your future. Your Uncle Sanzu blames it on the prenatal pills, but I hardly think that is the cause. I guess it is one of the many things I have to get used to now that I’ll have a child. Plus, there are times when I look in the mirror and see the effects of lack of sleep… It makes me sad. Lucky for me, your daddy has been nothing but supportive. No one at his organization believes he got out of bed at four in the morning to buy the cup of pudding and chilly sauce I wanted to snack on. The doctor said you’re about the size of a macaroni or an olive. Crazy to think a tiny being like you is making all these changes in me. I hope you’re growing well and healthy inside, angel.
Manjiro was close to throwing the mirror you were holding up to your face across the room or out the window and down to the busy streets of Tokyo. There was nothing wrong with getting acne or your stomach slightly bloating. To him, you were the prettiest woman he had ever laid eyes on and will always be until the end of time. But of course, you wouldn’t take his words for truth which frustrated him. And to think you were just doing your routine skincare before bed that led to this situation.
“Love, do you think I’m—”
“You’re not ugly. Practically fucking far from it, angel.” Taking his shirt off, your husband narrowed his eyes when you frowned in disbelief. It wasn’t until he threw his shirt on the nearby basket that he spoke up again, this time, his tone was more solemn. “Why on earth would you, my wife and the one carrying my child, ever be hideous in my eyes? Huh? It doesn't make sense. Explain that to me.”
“I don’t know…” you sniffled softly, warm tears starting to form and blurring your vision. Hand setting the mirror down that Manjiro was quick to pick up and flung it to the couch. It was a miracle it didn’t shatter with the way he threw it like it was mere dirt. Strong arms envelop your form, albeit not tight enough to cause discomfort for he was afraid to hurt you or the baby. Figure melting into his embrace, you inhaled the faint scent of the fabric softener from his shirt. “Sorry if I’m so emotional.”
“It’s alright, love.” Body pulling back slightly to grab your hand, he pressed a kiss on your knuckle. “Don’t ever think I’d see you as ugly because you’re fuckin’ beautiful. Especially now that you’re having my baby, angel. So fucking beautiful.” Hand patting your belly, he added in a more light-hearted tone. “And so is our baby.”
MONTH 4: WEEK 15
Dear adorable pumpkin,
Your daddy and I were super happy today. Not only do we get to eat at a delicious restaurant to celebrate such a momentous occasion, but we finally got to see you, my angel. As you can see in the photo below, you’re so cute and I wish I could hold you soon. The doctor said you’re the size of a pear and your daddy couldn’t help but marvel at the fruit, holding and imagining it’s you. I hope you could also hear him talk to you every night. I can’t wait to know whether you’re a girl or boy, but that doesn’t matter much to me for as long as you stay healthy. Love you so much, my sweet angel.
Looking at the sonogram of your baby, you winced when a tingling sensation ran in your gums as you chewed on the apple slices your husband prepared. Rim of the glass of water against your lips, you set the photo down and got up from the couch to look for Manjiro. The craving for ice cream, cotton candy and juice was aggravating you, especially since you were asked to cut back from the sugary stuff. The sight of your husband by the refrigerator snacking on a taiyaki made you groan in jealousy that caught his attention.
“What’s the matter?”
“Lucky you could continue eating sweets,” you mumbled, nearing the refrigerator to grab the leftover salad. Heading back to the living room couch with Manjiro in tow, you raised a brow when he didn’t sit next to you. Chewing and swallowing the avocados, lettuce, and strawberries, you raised a brow at him. “What? Come and sit down, ‘Jiro. I won’t bite. Wanna watch a movie?” Not waiting for his response, you grabbed the remote and switched the television on. Careful not to step on your toes or breathe the wrong way in your direction, your husband settled next to you.
Despite how quiet he is the entire duration of the film, he was thankful the deities above heard his prayers for once. The last time he annoyed you by just eating his sweets on the couch was the worst, having him evicted to sleep in the guest room.
MONTH 5: WEEK 18
Dear pumpkin,
I hope you are sleeping soundly in there. Sometimes, I feel like you’re trying to say something to me since I feel a sort of bubbling or fluttering inside my belly. Are you happy there? You’re getting bigger indeed and I can’t help but feel emotional every time. Daddy vows to keep you safe, especially now that I’ve become bigger and sometimes my lower back hurts. I can’t even believe I almost forgot about our anniversary. The doctor did say it is part of being pregnant that I tend to become forgetful. I just wish I wouldn’t get so dizzy easily. And if you must know, I decided to ask the doctor to keep your gender a secret in the end. Your daddy and I wanna be surprised after all. One of his friends told us to hold a gender reveal party, but your daddy loves his privacy like he loves his sweets. I hope you stay healthy as ever, my angel.
Manjiro wiped off the sheen of sweat from your forehead and chin using a washcloth. A satisfied smile on his usual passive features mirrored yours after a round of kissing and more. The dress you wore for tonight lay folded on top of his clothes. The gold Cartier bracelet he gifted you gleamed under the warm lamp light. Chest rising and falling to a steady pace, you reached up to cup his cheek, mouthing a ‘thank you’ to him. He pressed a kiss to your hand. Your husband then ran his palm smoothly on your belly. His black irises roved across your skin, caressing the stretch marks that streaked on your abdomen.
“You okay? Do you think the baby is alright?”
“Yeah, I’m more than fine. I’m sure the baby is, too.” Pointing to the direction of the bathroom, you slowly sat up. “I have to pee—mmph.” Carrying you in his arms gently, Manjiro didn’t say a word after he gave you a chaste kiss on the lips as he walked to where the toilet is. “I could get there by myself, you know. But thank you.” You giggled at his show of strength, arms wrapped around his neck and pecked him there. He merely hums in approval.
MONTH 6: WEEK 23
Dear little pumpkin,
There may be nights when bad guys might be out and about. But no matter what, I will keep you safe. Away from harm and silly ghosts that might try and scare you. However, we both have to be brave when we need to be. Your Uncle Sanzu suggested that we get a guard dog, but I think getting you a puppy once you’re a bit older to understand would be better. Plus, I don’t think your daddy is ready to welcome a puppy into the penthouse just yet. You’re a bit heavy now and it is sometimes hard to walk with swollen feet so your daddy is worried about my safety. Yesterday, I felt you kick hard in the middle of the night, which got me all giddy that your daddy got a bit spooked. You do pick the strangest moments to make yourself know, huh. Love you my darling.
“Woah, calm down.” You then sighed, rubbing your startled husband’s back after squealing out of delight at feeling your baby’s strong kick. The gun in his hand glistened under the moonlight, one he kept religiously under his pillow if anyone decided to sneak up on him while he was asleep. According to him, it has happened before—way back when he was still starting out Bonten. Thankfully, it hasn’t occurred since. But one can never be careless. Watching the way Manjiro tried to calm himself down and place the weapon into the nightstand’s drawer, you waited for his breath to even out. “Sorry if I scared you, love. I was… just excited.”
His eyes turned to look at you before asking. “What got you squealing in the middle of the night?” His voice was hoarse from sleep, eyes still squinted until you guided one of his hands to your huge belly. The bright grin on your face said it all. Happiness is certainly contagious that those soulless eyes had a tiny spark in them, fatigue immediately dissipating.
“I felt the baby kick, ‘Jiro. It was a strong one, too.”
“Really? Do you think it’s as strong as mine?”
“If it were, I’d have a hole in my tummy.”
MONTH 7: WEEK 26
Dear sweet pumpkin,
A few more months to go and you’ll be here in my arms. The doctor said you’re about the same size as a red cabbage. She also said you’ll be able to hear and see inside my tummy. After knowing that information, I’m sure you’ve been listening to the classical music I’ve been playing. Upon searching on the internet, it’s supposed to make you smarter. Your daddy is always looking forward to feeling you kick. I do wish he is around more often around this time of the year. But I can’t blame him since his job can be demanding. I hope you don’t feel lonely like me and enjoy the food I’ve been eating to keep you healthy. Love you so, so, much my little angel.
Feet aching and swollen, you shot a glance at your husband speaking with Sanzu and Kakucho. The bento box you made for you and Manjiro sat on the coffee table, still untouched. The trip to his office was an uneventful one, yet you were buzzing with joy upon riding the elevator up to where he is. However, you weren’t anticipating the meeting to take longer than planned. Hiding your discomfort was futile as a hiss of pain left your lips when you tried to move and get comfortable. Manjiro’s eyes were immediately on you, excusing himself to approach you and get on his knees to apply pressure on your swollen right foot.
“Angel, does it hurt so much?”
Seeing the lingering gazes of the two higher-ups of Bonten, you coughed. Silently hinting for Manjiro to stand up from his kneeling position. But that didn’t matter to him, brows pinched as he added more pressure to where it ached, having you almost moan out in contentment. Kakucho was the first to notice his boss’ sharp glance, quickly leaving the room. Sanzu, on the other hand, had the audacity to stay for two more minutes until your husband stood up and gestured to the door. Apologizing softly at the retreating pink-haired executive, you sighed in relief when there were no more judgemental eyes, back sinking further into the couch. Manjiro let out a puff of air at your actions, shaking his head lightly before resuming his massage on your foot.
“‘Jiro, that can wait. We must eat lunch first,” you muttered, yet lacked the conviction to have him stop completely which he noticed. “I bet you’re starving. You did skip breakfast to get here early…”
“Yeah, just let me finish this,” he murmured, continuing the kneading of your foot that produced more soft groans and asking him to do it harder from you. If anyone were to pass by, they’d think you two were having sex instead of a wholesome scene between husband and wife.
MONTH 8: WEEK 30
Dear lovable pumpkin,
Your daddy is such a silly man at times. You’re still in my tummy yet he wishes to give you a sibling so you wouldn’t be lonely while growing up. And while I’m opposed to the idea, I want to love you with all of my heart first as I will do so for your future siblings if there would be any. It is quite hard to walk around the penthouse because you’ve become so big and heavy. I look like a penguin waddling around, but your daddy says it is a cute sight to see. It won’t be long until you’re here with us. Everyone is so excited that Koko, one of your father’s friends, gifted us baby clothes. Suggested names for you were tossed onto the table, but it is quite hard to decide since we did keep your gender a secret. Please continue to be healthy, even if that means you kicking my tummy most of the time at night. I love you so much, my baby.
Mewling into the neck of Manjiro, you then let out a gasp when something leaked out of your breasts after he pinched your nipples. Many nights have passed since you were able to sleep peacefully. Backaches, more stretch marks, swollen feet, and the baby kicking was enough to keep any pregnant woman awake most of the night. Now that you were lactating, your tits were far more sensitive than ever. Your husband didn’t share the same bothered sentiment as you, contented in kneading and tasting the milk you were producing in the wee hours of dawn.
“Love, I-I don’t think I could take it anymore,” you sobbed, trying to pry off his hands from pinching your nipples until they were rock hard. “Aren’t you t-tired? You’ve been at it since we got to bed!” A stuttered breath from you met the skin of his neck when he leaned down to lick off the milk that dripped down to his hands. It was such an obscene sight that would have your hormones acting up, leading down to the path of soft sex but not tonight. You were far too exhausted for that now. “P-please? ‘Jiro, let’s g-go to bed.”
“Fuck. More, baby, let me see these tits leak one more time. Yeah? Just one last time and we’ll sleep.”
MONTH 9: WEEK 39
To my dear pumpkin,
These past few months have been the most magical I’ve ever experienced. Who knew having a baby was such an amazing thing? But I won’t deny how terrifying it can be, especially when the world you’re about to be born in is far from the common life that an ordinary mother can provide. Yet, know this… Mommy and daddy won’t give up on trying to give you a normal life, one that you deserve to have. Your father swears that he will keep you safe as he promised me back then, too. And I promise to be the best mother you could ever have. Time flies so fast indeed that I can’t believe we’ll be welcoming you soon. I can’t wait to hold you in my arms, my little pumpkin. Your daddy is even giddier than I am, although he tries hard not to show it since I tease him. I hope that once you read this diary of our journey together, I hope it shall not only bring a smile to your face, but to those with whom you’ll share it.
See you soon, my darling angel!
“Say hi to the baby, angel,” Manjiro cooed, holding up his daughter wrapped in cloth. Smiling brightly at the baby girl, you reached out a hand to caress her hand that was wrapped around her father’s finger. Tears brimmed your vision. You fought back a sob as took in her tiny appearance. Eyes memorizing the curve of her lips and the shape of her eyes.
“Hi, pumpkin… It’s me, your mother.” Manjiro handed you the child, the corners of his lips curled up in undiluted happiness while he bent down to kiss your forehead and face multiple times. Love in every peck and whisper of you doing a good job after ten hours of labor. The pride in his chest was at an all-time high. “You’re so small and so beautiful. Yeah, look at you. She’s so beautiful, ‘Jiro.”
“Beautiful indeed,” Manjiro said in a hushed tone, still pressing kisses to your face. “My two angels. Thank you, baby. Thank you for giving me a beautiful daughter.”

"If I Killed Someone For You" by Alec Benjamin reminds me of Yanderes! Kaminari, Kirishima, or Deku. Would you do a writing piece of them based on this song?
I love this, hopefully it’s what you were looking for. :) I chose Denki because I don’t see a lot of yandere stuff for him.
Warnings: blood, typical yandere shenanigans.
Denki pried his fingers off of the edge of the sink and reached for the faucet with shaky hands. The water trickled out cold, he filled his palms and let the water run over them, the blood hadn’t started to dry yet. It ran down the drain dark and dirty against the white porcelain. “It never gets any easier...” He turned his head and looked at the mess on the floor. That pathetic mess hadn’t moved in a few minutes, but he never liked to have his back turned on a body too long. He laughed and kicked his stomach. The body slumped forward with more blood oozing out of his mouth, but it didn’t make a sound. “Yup, still dead.”
Yeah it never got any easier, Denki thought.
The cleanup, that is.
The young man filled up the bucket of water with soap and scrubbed at the walls. The blood came off easy, the difficult part is getting the blood out of the rags. He’ll probably burn them, that seemed to work pretty good last time. “Your honor, I had a moment of weakness, but it will never happen again. My service as a hero should prove that I love this city...” Denki muttered to himself as he ripped the rubber gloves off and tossed them into the trash bag with all of the bloody cloths. The body was wrapped in a plastic tarp, out of the way for now, but he had to hurry and get it on the street before too much of the leaked out.
Kaminari caught a moment of himself in the reflection of the metal bucket, he bent down and studied his face. He hooked his lip and pulled on it to look at his teeth. He touched his hair, fixing it back in place and smiled at his reflection. “You need some sleep Kaminari, you barely look like yourself.” He smirked again and winked.
His phone beeped in his pocket.
Her
Would she be devastated when the police call to tell her the news, or will she be relieved he’s finally gone? Denki wondered and checked the text. “Hey can I call you after work? I’m having a rough day... :(” Denki thought he could cry, reaching out to him after a long day? She really must love him, maybe she knew somehow that he’s been her protector, the one she can always rely on.
Would you love me even more if you knew it was me who got rid of that scum bag?
“Another body on this side of town, a serial killer?” Denki’s old friend touched her cheek and chin as she asked the chief of police. Denki shook his head in disbelief. “Absolutely disgusting, but I don’t think so Headphone Jack. It doesn’t look like it was well thought out, maybe a robbery?”
Jiro nodded her head in agreement. “He’s dressed like he was carrying a lot of cash, I’m not sure what he would be doing all the way over here. I mean, he just looks out of place.” The police had the entire street blocked off with flashing lights. The ambulance is moving the body in a bag, the sirens on and blaring. The detectives approached the hero pair. “Thank you for calling us you two, if you hadn’t called I doubt anyone would have reported this for awhile. Things have a tendency to just disappear out this way.” The detective fixed his hat on his head to tip at the heroes. “I think you’re right Chargebolt, a mugging gone wrong. This case will probably turn up cold, his wallet is empty but all his belongings are with him. Nothing to really trace to a pawn shop around here, so unless we find prints on the murder weapon, we don’t have a lot to go off of.”
Good luck finding a print on that crow bar, you won’t.
“Just a mess sir, I’m so sorry. Do we have an ID on him?” Denki asked the detective with another shake of the head. “His ID was still on him, so was his office card. He works on the other side of town.”
“Where at?” Jiro asked with a stern face. “Maybe we can dig around and find out what he was doing out here.”
“He worked at the Law Firm by that one sushi bar...” The detective thought for a moment. “Don’t get too involved in this, you know those big office types. Always hiding something. He probably was over here for something shady, and got caught up in a mess. Let us handle it, you two head home.”
Denki turned the keys in his car over and felt the air conditioning hit his hot cheeks and took a deep breath. Such a rush every time, nobody would ever suspect sweet, kinda ‘dumb’ Kaminari for anything so heinous. He drove out of the bad side of town wearing his favorite disguise.
His hero costume.
He hummed to the radio as he headed for your neighborhood, you should be getting home from work any time now.
His phone rang, right on time. He waited a second so you wouldn’t think he was staring at his phone waiting for you to call. “Kaminari.” He said casually into the phone.
“H-hey Chargebolt, it’s me... Y/N.”
Your voice was so sweet, so gentle. You sounded tired.
“Hey you! You know you can call me Denki, I told you that!”
You laughed a small giggle and trailed off for a second. “Oh yeah, sorry. How was your day?”
Denki talked for a little bit, saying there was a few weird things at work but nothing he wasn’t used too. “But enough about me, why was your day so rough?”
“One of my bosses never showed up to work today, and they threw all of his work load onto me. I had to give a presentation I knew nothing about, and meet with a client who wouldn’t talk to me because I’m not a lawyer yet... I don’t even work with him often, I don’t know why I had to pick up his work.” You sighed into the phone. “I guess I’m just tired, I don’t even feel like cooking but I haven’t eaten all day.”
Denki grit his teeth and tightened his grip on the steering wheel. That bastard is messing with her from the other side, he smashed that bug to make things easier for her, not worse.
“You know what you need?” Denki asked, forcing his tone to be pleasant. “What’s that?” You asked sweetly into the phone. “Some takeout. Want me to swing by with some food?”
“Oh no, you’re so busy I could never ask you to do that.” He couldn’t see you, but your face blushed profusely. THE Chargebolt wanted to come to your apartment?
“I’m never too busy for such a good friend, I’m not far, I’ll come by.”
You looked through your peephole, surprised. You barely recognized your friend. You swung the door open quickly and gasped. “What happened to you!?”
You touched his face, he looked pale and exhausted. He held up a brown paper bag and a bottle of wine. “Aw come on, I can’t look that bad!” You grabbed his jacket and quickly pulled him inside. “Come sit down, you look like you just saw a ghost.” You took the food from him and set it on your coffee table. He plopped down on your couch like he had been there a million times.
Because well, he had. He loved spending time here with you. You had never invited him inside, but he didn’t think you would mind if he slipped in for a bit while you slept. You’re such a sweet person, you’d want him to be comfortable.
You sat down beside him and opened the bag, the two of you talked and ate together. He had you laughing so hard a noodle almost came out of your nose. Things got quiet for a second after the both of you yawned, I guess it was getting a little late. You turned the T.V. on and a breaking news segment caught your eye.
“We’ll increase our patrols of the area to try and increase the safety of all the cities residents, for now, don’t walk alone at night and keep your smarts about you.” “Hey... that’s you!” You looked at him in shock. Your bosses face popped up on the screen next to the news reported who was interviewing the electric hero. “Wh-why is my boss on there?”
Denk sat up and put a hand on your back. “That’s... that’s the victim I found on the south side of town today.” Your eyes teared up and you gripped onto Denki. He pulled you into a hug and you shook in his arms. “Why would somebody kill him? I mean he could be a jerk to work with, but nothing to murder someone over.”
Denki tensed up a bit. The fact that you were in his arms, this should be the best day of his life but you seem... upset?
You pulled away from him and looked up with puffy red cheeks. “Denki I’m scared. A woman on the third floor is missing, and- and the mechanic from IT was found with his throat cut a month ago.” You stood up and paced the floor. “Not to mention my-my...” You stopped talking and crumbled back into Denki’s arms. “I can’t do this, I know this sounds ridiculous but I feel like I’m in danger.”
“You can’t be alone right now...” Denki rubbed your back and cradled you. “I think you should come stay with me for a little while...”
“Wh-what?” You asked confused. Denki touched your face softly and gave your side a playful shock. You giggled and he hugged you again. After a moment he touched your shoulders firmly and looked you in the eye. “If you think you’re in danger, you should come stay at my place. It’s in a nicer part of the city, and I can keep an eye on you.”
You thought for a minute. Your boyfriend has only been dead for six months, but in that time you and Denki had gotten really close. Like he was sent by an angel to help you. “I really appreciate it, but I should probably stay here. I think it would silly for me to pack everything up and run, I mean nothing is going to happen to me, right?”
Denki smirked, but he wasn’t happy. “Are you serious right now Y/N?”
His tone change surprised you and you stepped away from him in reflex. “What’s wrong?” You picked up your glass of wine that you had been neglecting and took a big sip. You’ve never really been a huge drinker, but the bitter taste gave you something to focus on.
“What’s wrong? What’s wrong!?” Denki gripped his hair and smiled at you. “You don’t understand what I’ve been doing for you. I really stick my neck out for you, and you never seem to care about how it makes ME feel.” He crossed his arms and shook his head. “I- I’m sorry I know you’re busy but I thought we...” You didn’t know what the two of you are. He mostly kept your relationship a secret, he didn’t want you to be in the press at all. But you felt like the two of you are really close, you’d never take advantage of him.
“You still don’t get it do you? Everything I do is to make you happy. Make your life easier, and you don’t even seem to notice.”
He took his jacket off and threw it on the couch. You took another step away from him and gripped your wine glass harder. You’d never seen him act this way before. You took another gulp.
“D-denki there’s something on your shirt.” He looked down, he hadn’t noticed but a few specks of blood had gotten on his ribs. You stepped closer and grabbed it, gently touching the blood stain. “I-is this from work?” You asked in a voice barely above a whisper. Denki said nothing, he reached out and touched your shoulder.
His hands smelled like bleach.
“I think you... you should go.” You said trying to sound firm, swallowing the rest of your wine.
“I think I should stay the night, you look tired.” He said in a soft voice.
Your head was swimming, your eyes feeling very heavy all of a sudden.
You looked down at the table and saw that he hadn’t taken one sip of his drink, which wasn’t really like him.
“Denki what did you do?” You stumbled backwards and dropped the glass onto the floor. You reached for your cell phone but dropped it before losing control of your legs. He smiled and caught you in his arms. He planted a kiss on your forehead. “Denki did you kill my boss?” You tried to cry out but you couldn’t move, he lifted you into his arms. “Oh honey, shhhhh.” He laid you on the couch. He didn’t have long to pack some of your things up and scrub any trace of him ever being here. “I was hoping you’d be more understanding, happy even that I removed all of these messes from your life.”
You choked on your words and fought to keep your eyes open. “All of these-?”
No he didn’t mean...
Denki crouched down beside you spoke softly. “That boyfriend of yours? He didn’t even yell out for you when he was dying on the sidewalk. He said that other girls name... my blood boiled, how could he not see that he had the most perfect woman in the world waiting for him at home?” He scoffed. “That’s when I stomped out his teeth. He didn’t deserve to ever say your name anyway.” Denki stuck his tongue out at you, showing off his teeth. You wanted to scream, but your eyes shut.
You felt his lips touch yours, before everything was black.
I didn’t put the lyrics in here but I definitely alluded to just about all of them. What did you think?? I had fun writing this one.

Celebrity chef, globe-trotting host of such shows as No Reservations and Parts Unknown, and author of the Vertigo graphic novel Get Jiro!, Anthony Bourdain, has passed away at the age of 61.
“It is with extraordinary sadness we can confirm the death of our friend and colleague, Anthony Bourdain,” CNN said in a statement. The network confirmed that suicide was the cause of death.
He had been in Strasbourg, France, working on an episode of the Emmy Award-winning CNN series, Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown. The network said his body was found in his hotel room by French chef and close friend Eric Ripert.
Bourdain, who was born in New York and grew up in the suburbs of New Jersey, graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in 1978. After working in several kitchens, he gained recognition from Kitchen Confidential, which described in vivid detail the dark and drug-fueled world that dwelled within the industry and among those working in the trenches.
Back in 2012, Bourdain wrote the graphic novel Get Jiro! for Vertigo Comics. It’s touted as a stylized send-up of food culture and society that features spectacular detailed and dynamic art by Langdon Foss. The synopsis is as such: In a not-too-distant future of food obsessed L.A., where master chefs rule the town like crime lords and people literally kill for a seat at the best restaurant, Jiro, a renegade and ruthless sushi chef arrives in town with strong ideas of his own. It’s a bloody culinary war of epic proportions, and in the end, no chef may be left alive!
That sounds spectacular, but it doesn’t end there. Three years later, Bourdain released a prequel to the hit book, titled Get Jiro: Blood and Sushi. This book examines the origins of the mysterious Jiro and what made him into the chef he has become. Born the heir to a Yakuza crime family, Jiro never longed to travel the criminal path laid out before him, but instead chose to secretly study the rich culinary history of his homeland—something that would have significant repercussions if discovered by his gangster father! And as Jiro’s interest in the culinary arts deepens, the challenge of keeping his artistic and criminal worlds separate becomes too great, triggering a great personal loss that will forever change Jiro’s path.
This is a devastating loss to the cooking world, the comic book world, and the world in general. Bourdain has been an inspiration to so many people, and I hope that his legacy will live on for a very long time.
And remember, if you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, please reach out. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline has trained counselors who are ready to listen and help, and they’re only a phone call or text away.

Distress & Coma (The GazettE)
Hello dear my bride
I burn your feet.
There is no longer a need to be near the ringing in your ears.
Unconsciously I vomit; my breath moves along your skin.
I smile at the sword that swings reticence.
What I want to forget, is the pain that is too white.
I tell myself that I believe.
The scar won't disappear.
In the dream that has become thin, the unawakening(1) reality is reflected.
If you will answer that sadness is only the truth,
It's okay if I get hurt...
Poker Face (Lady Gaga)
I wanna roll with him a hard pair we will be
A little gambling is fun when you're with me (I love it)
Russian Roulette is not the same without a gun
And baby when it's love, if its not rough it isn't fun, fun
Like a Ghost (of Mice & Men)
I feel maliciously unstable
I feel the pain inside me grow
I need something, anything to get me by
I need something, anything just to numb this lifeHold on don't let go
When you feel left in the cold
It will haunt you like a ghost
When you feel love like you never did, you never did
Burn (Three days grace)
So let me know just how to take this
You're way to cold
Now show me how before it breaks me
Did you come here to watch me, watch me burn?I'll let it show that
I'm not always hiding
Come all the way down
And watch me burn
I won't let it show that
I'm not always flying
So on the way down
I'll watch you burn
Love It If We Made It (The 1975)
Oh Fuck your feelings
Truth is only hearsay
We're just left to decay
Modernity has failed us
And I'd love it if we made it
Yes, I'd love it if we made it
Yes, I'd love it if we made it
Yes, I'd love it if we made it
Go Go (BTS)
I want to be cruisin’ on the bay
I want to be cruisin’ like NEMO
No money but I wanna go far away
I don’t have money but I wanna relax
No money but I wanna eat Jiro Ono’s sushi
Worked hard to get my pay
Gonna spend it all on my stomach
Pinching pennies to spend it all on wasting it
Leave me be, even if I overspend
Even if I break apart my savings tomorrow
Like a crazy guy
Enigmatic Feeling (Ling Tosite Sigure)
If I keep having things stolen I'll go completely crazy in this sleeping forest
I've surpassed the infinite future. I'm floating, my body is suspended
Where are you?
While the world was divided in two, I cut myself loose
The scars of touching the truth will surely never disappear
The boundary line is like paper-thin, like paper-thin. Is there only one god?
It's getting weird, it's getting weird. Will you suddenly be taken away from me?
Crazy, crazy, a perfectly suspended body. My mind can't focus itself
Shake me, shake me, a perfectly suspended body. I can't even peek at the mirror
Just a bit more, just a bit more until I'll suddenly figure out the answer
It's getting painful, it's getting painful. Will I suddenly break down?
But forgive me, forgive me. I'll disappear so just believe that you killed me
But forgive me, forgive me because I'll disappear

The Best Food Comics and Graphic Novels to Help You Escape
A panel from Hungry Ghosts | Berger Books
From Anthony Bourdain’s “Hungry Ghosts” to “The Mushroom Fan Club” by Elise Gravel, these books will leave you entertained and hungry
If you’re like me, you take comfort in books. Fiction is the best escapism, but sometimes — say, in the midst of a global pandemic — processing a block of text feels too overwhelming, and I’d rather get lost in a book filled with a dazzling array of colors. That’s why I like to add graphic novels into my rotation.
Now, if you’ve never read a graphic novel before, the transition into comics can feel daunting. The medium is so heavily saturated with superheroes that it’s easy to get lost, or to think that’s all there is. But graphic novels go beyond Spiderman and the X-Men, essentially touching every genre. So if you like reading about food, which I assume you do because you’re here, I’ve compiled a list of food- and restaurant-focused graphic novels to get you started.
J&K by John Pham
If you’re a fan of Superbad and Booksmart, this is the book for you. J&K follows the misadventures of two inseparable slackers, Jay and Kay, as they try to navigate life in the modern world. It’s divided into small vignettes and while they’re not all food-focused, “Working Girl” is reason enough to get this beautiful book. The story follows Kay, an employee at an Orange Julius knockoff called “Orange Julio’s,” as she experiences a rollercoaster of a workday dealing with nasty, demanding customers. It’s incredibly relatable and further proof that food service workers deserve their dignity. [Buy: Bookshop]
The Mushroom Fan Club by Elise Gravel
Elise Gravel’s delightful book is an illustrated guide to mushrooms, both edible and not. What makes Gravel an expert on mushrooms? Well, one of her family’s most beloved pastimes is mushroom hunting. In this book, she combines her love of being outside with her talent for anthropomorphizing everything with cartoon eyes and goofy grins. Reading Gravel’s book is like taking a tour of the forest floor. In addition to her beautiful artwork, Gravel provides readers with fun fungal facts. So, if you want to learn everything there is to know about mushrooms, from the meaty chanterelle to the peculiar indigo milkcap, I highly recommend this whimsical book. [Buy: Bookshop]
Hot Dog Taste Test by Lisa Hanawalt
In Hot Dog Taste Test, cartoonist Lisa Hanawalt — best known for her work as designer/producer on Bojack Horseman — serves up a hilarious collection of vibrant watercolors, sketches, and comics that poke fun at food culture. Not to be missed: “On the Trail With Wylie,” which was originally featured in Lucky Peach (RIP) and won Hanawalt a James Beard Award for best humor writing in 2014. The comic follows Hanawalt as she shadows chef Wylie Dufresne and his staff for an entire day at his former NYC restaurant wd~50. While she mocks certain trends in the food world, Hot Dog Taste Test is also a love letter to the delicious things Hanawalt loves. [Buy: Bookshop]
Relish: My Life in the Kitchen by Lucy Knisley
Lucy Knisley’s delightfully drawn memoir is a technicolor ode to cooking and eating. It presents her experiences growing up through a spectacle of mouthwatering foods, from sautéed mushrooms to dried hot pepper candies. Plus, almost all of the chapters end with recipes (carbonara, anyone?) so you can cook your way through the book. [Buy: Bookshop]
Seconds by Bryan Lee O’Malley
Seconds tells the story of a talented young chef named Katie who runs a successful restaurant and plans to open a second. Afterf her life takes a sudden turn for the worse, a mysterious girl appears in the middle of the night with simple instructions for a DIY do-over — write your mistake, ingest one mushroom, go to sleep, wake up anew — and Katie is given a second chance. However, With a dresser full of magical mushrooms and an urge to make her life perfect, Katie soon discovers that her actions have consequences. Seconds is a magical graphic novel that delivers the same style and humor of Bryan O’Malley’s lauded Scott Pilgrim series. It’s the perfect escape from reality. [Buy: Bookshop]
Hungry Ghosts by Anthony Bourdain and Joel Rose
It goes without saying: Anthony Bourdain left behind a great literary legacy. Somewhere in between Kitchen Confidential and Appetites, he took a turn at the comic book genre when he joined co-writer Joel Rose to bring the incredibly violent Get Jiro! (and its follow-up, Get Jiro: Blood and Sushi) to life, adding fuel to a new era of food comics.
Hungry Ghosts reunited the two writers in 2018. The book is a collection of comics that tell the story of a Russian oligarch who, in the middle of his dinner party, invites the chefs working in his kitchen to play a version of 100 candles, a Japanese Edo-period game in which brave samurai would try to one-up each other with terrifying tales of ghosts, demons, and unspeakable beings. The book isn’t exactly for the faint of heart, but it will resonate with fans of Get Jiro! and movies like Raw and Lady Snowblood. It’s riddled with unsettling tales inspired by Japanese mythology and comic book violence, but it’s also a celebration of culinary creativity and great storytelling. If you like ghost stories, Hungry Ghosts delivers kitchen nightmares that are guaranteed to haunt you. [Buy: Bookshop]
Umma’s Table by Yeon-Sik Hong
Umma’s Table tells the story of Madang, an artist working to overcome the exhaustion of trying to be everything all at once: a good son, devoted father, and loving husband. He struggles to to balance his wife and baby, and his ailing mother and alcoholic father back in Seoul. To cope, Madang retreats to childhood memories of their family meals together and his mother’s cooking, particularly her kimchi. Hong’s poignant story is a meditation on the joys of a family’s food traditions and how they bind them together. [Buy: Bookshop]

11 Fascinating Myths About Menstruation
A menstrual taboo is any social taboo concerned with the menstruation. In some of the societies it involves the menstruation being perceived as very unclean or embarrassing, inhibiting even the mention of menstruation whether in the public or in the private (among their friends, in the household, or with the men). Many traditional religions consider the very process of menstruation is ritually unclean, although the anthropologists point out that the concepts ‘sacred’ and ‘unclean’ may be intimately connected.
Here are few astonishing myths about mensuration still prevail in modern world
Sharks Will Attack Women on Their Periods
While the women may be “riding crimson tide,” there’s no need to worry about the shark attacks if woman wants to actually go in ocean. There’s no data to support the menstruation attracts sharks. So for everyone out there thinking the menstruation attracts sharks, think again before you blame periods.
Period blood is dirty blood
Period blood isn’t rejected the body fluids or body’s way of flushing out toxins. Think of it as evolved the vaginal secretion — there’s little bit of blood, uterine tissue, mucus lining, and bacteria. But it doesn’t change whether or not we can have the sex, and it doesn’t mean conditions are less than ideal down there. the Period blood is very different from the blood that moves continuously through veins. In fact, it’s less concentrated blood. It has the fewer blood cells than ordinary blood.
Women Will Contaminate Food
In parts of the rural India, there is myth that women cannot water plants or cook during period because their “uncleanliness” will spoil food. In study done in random school in rural India, 55 percent of the girls surveyed believed they could not cook or enter kitchen during and 4 days after menstruation or food would be sour.
Showering Will Cause Infertility
A women in the Kabul goes to doctor to check her health during maternity. Without healthy menstrual cycles, the cleanliness and properly managing the periods women can risk the infections that cause infertility. In Afghanistan, word “gazag” means to become infertile. It’s said (in old Afghan tradition) that during week a woman has her period she cannot wash or even shower. You’re probably thinking this is very gross. It is. And it’s more than that–it’s a major risk for the infection. In many places, including the Afghanistan, it’s common for the women to use the cloth sanitary napkins. The benefit here is that it’s relatively inexpensive and renewable way to manage the periods. The downside is women are often ashamed to hang clean cloth used during the menstruation outside with other laundry. So women hide and wear the sanitary napkins for too long which causes the infections deadly to reproductive health. This can all be fixed if the social taboos over periods are eliminated.
Periods Are Debilitating For Women
Imagine someone telling you to miss the work every month even if you don’t feel sick. Menstrual leave is thing, and this one is more controversial than some. Several countries in the Asia, like South Korea, China, Japan, and Indonesia have the laws providing the women sick leave during their period. The debate here is whether the menstrual leave for women is a form of the discrimination or a medical necessity. Periods taboos are more debilitating than the menstrual cycles themselves. Lack of access to the sanitary napkins, and knowledge on managing the periods for girls and women is debilitating. But, the periods themselves are rarely a cause for necessary sick leave.
Yes, every woman experiences the menstrual cycles differently, but only 20 percent of women report the severe pain during periods. The other 80% of women reported no debilitating symptoms or the pain. With proper supplies and knowledge on how to manage the periods, girls and women can be empowered to accomplish any task any time of month.Girls Cannot Participate in Class
The chaupadi tradition is practice in rural parts of Nepal where the women are literally put in the isolation during their period. Again reason stems back to “being unclean.” Women cannot be in the classrooms with other students while the menstruating. The myth goes back to belief that woman’s uncleanliness will anger Hindu goddesses. Dispelling the traditional myths like the chaupadi where about 16 percent of women in the Nepal are forced from their homes into the isolation is the task that will take effort, the education and the awareness.
Women Can’t Prepare Sushi
According to cultural belief held by some the sushi chefs in Japan, such as Jiro Ono–a famous sushi chef with the restaurants in the Tokyo, Ginza, and Chūō, the women cannot be the sushi chefs because of the menstrual cycles. The myth here is that menstruation causes an “imbalance in the taste” and therefore the sushi cannot possibly be properly prepared by a woman.
Women Can’t Enter Holy Temples
This myth exists in the parts of the world ranging from the Bali and India to Nepal. Women are believed to be very “unclean” while they are menstruating and are thus not allowed to enter the “clean” and the holy places like the temples. This is a form of the gender inequality that limits the women from same human rights like the freedom to practice religion that the men have access to. the Girls and women menstruating are not unclean. They are normal, natural, and healthy. The myth that the women cannot enter the temples and holy ground is culturally controversial, and sensitive issue. When the women are treated differently because of the naturally occurring body cycle it creates the shame, the taboos, and the humiliation towards the periods that is deeply embedded into our society. And that is the only thing that’s ridiculous.
Women Have “Cooties” That Make Men “Sick”
In the India and parts of the Nepal (in alignment with the chaupadi tradition in Nepal). women cannot interact with or touch the men because the men will become sick by touching an “unclean” woman. Some 20% of girls in the rural India believe they should not talk to male member of the family during menstruation. And 40% of the girls in India learn about the menstruation from their mothers. So, if external education is not provided the traditions will persist.
Menstruation Is a Disease in Iran
Longstanding stigmatization in the Iran has caused a staggering 48% of girls to believe that the menstruation is a disease, according to UNICEF study. But there is the hope. A 2012 study by the National Center for Biotechnology Information revealed that when the young Iranian girls were given the menstrual education, the results showed more than half of them started bathing when they had the periods, while others busted erroneous misconception.
Pads Need To Be Kept the Unseen and Apart From Other Trash, or Could Lead To Cancer
Traditional beliefs in the Bolivia misinform young women and girls that disposal of their menstrual pads with other garbage could lead to the sickness or cancer, according to UNICEF. Because there’s still so much humiliation around topic, many are told to keep their pads far away from rest of the trash and are often led to collecting them in their bags during school day until they get home. The organization investigated about 10 schools in the Bolivia and identified that two main challenges the menstruating girls face include the feelings of the shame and limited access to the private bathrooms. For this reason, UNICEF has implemented the massive menstrual education program in hopes of increasing the access to the proper menstrual products and sanitation facilities.
Conclusion:
Period taboos are not only the crazy and ridiculous but they are huge obstacle holding the women back in many ways. It’s hard to believe these myths still exist all over world today. But they do, and they need to be busted. Awareness and the education, especially for the people in rural and developing countries, is necessary to empower the girls and women everywhere. Together we can create better world where the girls believe periods are powerful not shameful. The good news is there are the people making a difference each day when it comes to eliminating the period taboos. (source)

‘Anthony Bourdain’s Hungry Ghosts’ Is a Collection of Eerie Food Tales Steeped in Samurai Lore
While Anthony Bourdain will always be remembered for changing the television landscape with his shows No Reservations and Parts Unknown, it goes without saying he has left behind a great literary legacy. And now, fans of the late author/TV host can explore one of his literary passion projects in the form of a new comic book collection called Anthony Bourdain’s Hungry Ghosts.
Before he became the best-selling author of Kitchen Confidential, a behind-the-scenes look at restaurant life, Bourdain had already published a number of crime novels. And somewhere in between his cookbooks, memoirs, and other non-fiction work, the brilliant globetrotter took a turn at the comic book genre.
In 2012, Bourdain joined co-writer Joel Rose to produce the ultra-violent Get Jiro! (and its follow-up Get Jiro: Blood and Sushi). The graphic novel, which takes place in a not-too-distant future version of Los Angeles where master chefs rule the city like crime lords and people literally kill for a seat at the best restaurants, was a send-up of the “foodie” culture Bourdain so enjoyed diminishing. It also added fuel to a new era of food comics, which would eventually see the likes of Brian Wood’s Starve and Seconds by Bryan Lee O’Malley.
Hungry Ghosts, which reunites Bourdain and Rose with legendary comic book editor Karen Berger (best known for her role as founding editor of Vertigo Comics), is a collection of the four-part comic book series released earlier this year. It tells the story of a Russian oligarch who, in the middle of his dinner party, invites the chefs working in his kitchen to play a version of 100 candles, a Japanese Edo-period game in which brave samurai would try to one-up each other with terrifying tales of ghosts, demons, and unspeakable beings. “I had never heard of Kaiden, the Japanese Edo-period ghost stories, before Tony brought it up,” says Rose. “Never heard of Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai, the samurai game of 100 candles. Tony mentioned it first during a joint interview, and then afterwards over a beer at a nearby tavern, he got into it. He was encyclopedic.”
Bourdain and Rose’s take on the game replaces samurai with chefs who tell dark and gruesome tales about food and hunger, with each story taking inspiration from the many horrors found in Japanese mythology. “We read hundreds of ghost stories and eerie tales, joked over myriad spirits and all their incarnations,” Rose says. “We had fun putting the book together and made sure each story was exactly where we wanted it, told the way we wanted to tell it.”
“We had fun putting the book together and made sure each story was exactly where we wanted it, told the way we wanted to tell it.”
Hungry Ghosts is loaded with a long list of spirits, and Bourdain and Rose play with them all. “We knew we had to make the food thing work for us, so we felt the ghosts and goblins we settled on were also best suited for the palate,” Rose explains. The story, “Boil in the Belly” is certainly a case in point. Featuring the work of comic book legend Paul Pope, who also did the four jaw-dropping covers of the series, this story dives into the shapeshifting monsters known as bakemono. The storyteller chef, based on a famous chef and mutual friend of both Bourdain and Rose, tells the tale of a good-boy chef, based on a local restaurateur held in affection by both authors, who wakes up one morning to find a snake-like monster in his belly. “To put the bakemono in the belly of our poor chef hero was our sweet delight,” Rose says. “To inflict on Paul, our pure pleasure. He never bristled, got it right away, and succeeded beyond our wildest, succulent dreams.”
If you’re a fan of unsettling tales and comic book violence, then you should add Hungry Ghosts to your reading list. Not only is it a celebration of culinary creativity and the power of storytelling, both of which come together to deliver kitchen nightmares that are guaranteed to haunt you, it’s also a collector’s item for both Bourdain fans and comic book enthusiasts. The stories are stunningly illustrated by artists ranging from Vanesa Del Rey (Bitch Planet, Redlands) to Mateus Santolouco (Dial H, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), with amazing color by José Villarrubia, which further amplifies the horror elements in each story.
As a bonus for fans of the comics, the collection features several recipes from Bourdain, including one for pan-seared duck breast with red cabbage (it’s printed below). Co-writer Joel Rose also includes a handy guide called to the ghostly spirits featured in each story called The Real Ghosts, with illustrations by Leonardo Manco, as well as an extended dedication and beautiful send-off to Bourdain.
Anthony Bourdain’s Hungry Ghosts is now available for purchase online and at bookstores across the country. As a preview, here’s Bourdain’s duck recipe:
