a/n - i want to beat the shit out of zenitsu while simultaneously giving him a hug. also zen’s theme song is cariño by the marias no i will not be debating this

(reader is a demon slayer)

he’s extremely affectionate. he likes physical and verbal affection the most, because he can show it at any time!! he definitely does not give a shit about PDA and will sit in your lap at any and all times

b = best friend (what would they be like as a best friend? how would the friendship start?)

inosuke was actually the first one to meet you first, as he accidentally barreled into you when he ran too fast on a curvy road. when zen saw what happened, he was like “inosuke just ran into someone again and jesus christ they’re cute abort abort”

he definitely got really mad at inosuke as he stood there like

tanjirou helped you up and zen got mad at him too since that was supposed to be his job; get it together guys

as long as you don’t do anything to embarrass him, he’s very sweet as a friend!! he’ll always bring you little things he found to make you happy

c = cuddles (do they like to cuddle? how would they cuddle?)

he loves cuddles!! even before you started dating, you, tanjirou, nezuko, inosuke, and him would all have cuddle sessions (it was tanjirou’s idea, obviously)

after that, he warmed up to the idea of platonic cuddles!! it made him like cuddles even more when you got together

d = domestic (do they want to settle down? how are they at cooking and cleaning?)

settling down is definitely something he wants!! as much as he likes the other demon slayers, it stresses him out a ton and he’d rather get to have a family with his s/o.

very minor spoilers for the end of the manga for the rest of this letter:

when the main four all moved in together, zenitsu was so fucking excited. he wouldn’t have to worry about getting mauled to death and he gets to live with you? he was bouncing off the walls the entire time everyone was setting up.

e = ending (if they had to break up with their partner, how would they do it?)

i think he’d be the type to want to break up if he thought he was gonna die on a mission. he’d be very solemn and quiet, saying that he didn’t want to hurt his s/o, but if something were to happen to him it would hurt more. (remember how he acted when he saw kaigaku again?)

if it was forced upon him, he’d definitely be a crier. you can barely make out was he’s trying to say because he’s blubbering so much; after he gets it out he’d immediately hug you and sob into your shoulder. :(

f = fiance(e) (how do they feel about commitment? how quick would they want to get married?)

have you seen zenitsu? king wanted to marry that poor girl after 7 minutes tops

when he first started crushing, he would wanted to get married immediately. even if you weren’t together yet, tanjirou + inosuke would have to pull him off because he wouldn’t stop clinging to you.

especially since you’re a demon slayer, after the final arc he’d get a lot more serious about it. obviously he would never lose his personality, but he would finally officially confess (like you didn’t know before DHFJGKBFDHK) and maybe give you some space.

once you were older and had been together for a few years, every once in a while he’d be like “so uh... s/o..... howwouldyoufeelaboutgettingmarried” and then promptly leaving because poor boy was embarrassed

g = gentle (how gentle are they, both physically and emotionally?)

zenitsu is pretty gentle physically, but not as much as someone like genya or tanjirou. especially since he’s the type to tackle you into a hug HAHA

he’s very emotionally gentle!! he’s really sweet to you and is really sensitive

h = hugs (do they like hugs? how often do they do it? what are their hugs like?)

king LOVES hugs. he’s so clingy he’ll randomly jump at you and just. latch on. good luck leaving

when he’s softer, like if one of you gets hurt, he’ll hug you really gently and won’t say anything for a while. he’ll probably sniffle into the crook in your neck a lot. booger haori :(

i = i love you (how fast do they say the L-word?)

immediately. he doesn’t really understand how much it means, but tanjirou probably explains it to him because him and nezuko couldn’t handle the secondhand embarrassment

j = jealousy (how jealous do they get? what do they do when they’re jealous?)

oh god he gets jealous so easily. you can just be waving at inosuke and he’ll start crying

when he gets jealous, he’ll get even more clingy than normal and will start crying a ton. you’ll have to cuddle him for a while to get it through his head

k = kisses (what are their kisses like? where do they like to kiss you? where do they like to be kissed?)

he loves kissing you and being kissed everywhere!!! he doesn’t have a favorite place to kiss you, but he loves being kissed on his cheek :^) his kisses are really soft!

l = little ones (how are they around children?)

please for the love of god don’t put him near children

m = morning (how are mornings spent with them?)

he’s not a morning person at all. right when he wake up he immediately snuggles more into you. if you have to get up early for training, he won’t stop whining oh my god

if you bring him tea in the morning he’ll love you forever (he will anyways shh)

n = night (how are nights spent with them?)

it normally takes him a little while to fall asleep. he prefers to cuddle with you though because it helps a bit!! also because he’s touch starved

explained more in z, he moves around a ton. he likes talking about small stuff before bed too, since it distracts him a little.

o = open (when would they start revealing things about themselves? do they say everything all at once or wait a while to reveal things slowly?)

it would take a while. kaigaku isn’t something zen brought up to tanjirou or inosuke, and i don’t recall him mentioning it after the final battle. his grandpa is also a very sensitive subject to him, so his s/o would have to have his complete trust to talk about it.

i think he would reveal things slowly unless you asked him about it more.

p = patience (how easily angered are they?)

with you, it takes a while for him to get mad. even if you embarrass him, he’d mostly get really dramatic and teary.

if you get hurt, though, he’d definitely get mad at you for putting yourself in that position. losing you is something he doesn’t want to think about

q = quizzes (how much would they remember about you? do they remember every little detail you mention in passing, or do they kind of forget everything?)

i think he would take mental notes without even realizing?? like he’d remember the stupidest stuff you said just because he’s so head over heels. chill

zenitsu’s favorite memory was the day he confessed.

it was right after the final battle, and he was physically and emotionally exhausted from the losses. he just kinda went “fuck it” and went to go confess to you!!

he was really blunt since he was half knocked out on his feet. once you reciprocated, he kinda just. collapsed onto you and giggled really tiredly before passing out LMAOO

he gets embarrassed whenever you bring it up, but it still makes him really happy.

s = security (how protective are they? how would they protect you? how would they like to be protected?)

i mean... it depends? when he passes out during a fight, he subconsciously gets really protective. when he’s awake, however, he’d rather be protected HAHA

seeing you fight to protect him is his favorite!! it makes him feel really safe (despite being two seconds away from getting clawed in the face)

he moves very fast in the relationship. he still has that underlying fear of dying at any time so.. “fuck it i should marry s/o”

until he gets through that, you and the others will probably have to help him. he’s stronger than he realizes and while being cautious is good as a demon slayer, his paranoia is only stressing him out further :(

but after he started dating you, he let up a little bit as he got more comfortable.

whether you fell asleep touching or not, you will always wake up to zenitsu clinging to you. especially if you get up before him, he won’t even realize he does it unless you bring it up

he’s an active sleeper!! i’m so sorry if you’re a light sleeper because he won’t stop fucking moving. he also talks a lot in his sleep, and more often than not will snore lightly.

sometimes, though, after a long mission, he’ll just hold you while mumbling some slurred “love you, s/o” and then passes out instantly. on those nights, he won’t move at all or make any noise.

OK BUT ME TOO

- Bruno first questions your sanity once he oh so crudely gets y e e t e d back into reality by your booming, screeching yet still somehow angelic voice yelling out such sinful lyrics at only 2 am. He'll literally just 🧍 in the doorway for a few seconds until slowly but surely starting to sing along with you and yet you'd still be outscreaming him since the poor man is, after all, half asleep and also weary of your unfortunate neighbours. He'd normally be the one busting Mista and Narancia's asses because THEY are usually the ones disrupting public peace in the dead of the morning/night but would he put everything aside for you and you only and join the chaos since he loves you too much? Absolutely. He'll oversleep the next morning and pretend as if he wasn't totally screaming shit like "waKE UP FEELING SO H O R N Y Y Y-" last night when the others question you both about the matter as you slowly come to your senses after such a wild experience.

- Giorno is quite similar to Bruno except he actually puts LEGIT effort into his sleepy singing and let me tell you, the boi's voice is absolutely ANGELIC dude. Like even if he's singing absolute gibberish Giorno still somehow manages to make it sound as if he's singing Mozart's Lacrimosa. The man's face will quickly twist itself with an unbearably cute shit eating grin as he'd hear your chaotic antics only to join in mere seconds later and slap a full on beautiful ass falsetto at the end that secretely causes both you and Bruno in the other room to shed a few tears. The latter ain't even mad that he had woken him up tbh.

- Abbacchio totally grumbles that you woke him up like the grandpa that he is and tries his best to keep up that 🗿 persona only to break character not even 2 minutes later when you passionately grab a fork that you use as a mic whilst screaming "S E C S I N G YOU IS ALL I SEEEE" as you point towards him. That's when Abba starts chuckling and says fuck it and begins cheering you on and turning the FUCK UP even if he isn't really straight up singing the lyrics per se. You know he's highkey shy with shit like singing even if it's you, and teasing him again and again isn't exactly helping his case either but you really can't help it especially when you know how cutely he blushes whilst scoffing as he looks away in embarassment. However he WILL be quietly muttering or lip syncing the entire time.

- Mista will absolutely start singing this shit whilst banging pots and pans on top of the kitchen table LONG before you even think of doing it. It's almost like a ritual to him, disrupting public peace and getting several complaints from the neighbours and even a few warrants once in a while. But that's exactly why you love him anyway. You two will abdolurely wreck havoc and break your goddamn vocal chords as you go from Freek'N'You to Ginuwine's Pony until Bruno and the others bang on yall's door demanding that they're gonna ground yo asses if you don't shut the fuck up already because it's already almost 4 fucking am. Best partner in crime 11/10.

- Fugo will also deadass let loose and start screeching alongside you but not before trying (emphasis on "trying") to be the "wise one" as he'd tell you to stop this madness with a lowkey cute sleepy look. That is until you take him by the hand akin to Oceanman and encourage him to shout out "EVERYTIME I CLOSE MY EYES....", that's when Fugo says F U C K I T and eagerly continues the lyrics that you start screaming, albeit just a little quieter because he's still a lowkey shy boi.

- NARANCIA OH MY GOD HE AIN'T EVEN SLEEPING AT ALL BRUH HE HEARS THE INTRO TO THE SONG AND RUSHES HEAD ON LIKE "Y E A A A H." Mf climbs on top of the table, BREAKDANCES on it as you keep singing and screams his lungs off louder than you'll ever manage. Narancia will keep clapping as you keep singing once his throat gets all scratchy and fucked up until, as always, Bruno angrily zips into the room and threatens to take away his Nintendo DS if he doesn't stop already.

Bonus - Trish: She leaves as soon as you start and goes to sleep on the fucking couch downstairs because you're fucking ruining her beauty sleep.

Achievements: I guess I’m being asked to list some of mine...some of the ones I’m proudest of, at least, are graduating university with honors, landing a job (liking it is a big bonus), and taking up leadership positions.

Age: I am 22, but never felt quite like it.

Are you planning something right now? Kind of. I’m eyeing a long road trip to Tanay with just myself and go to one of their coffee shops, but idk when I’ll be able to do that. My wallet and bank account are still beat from Christmas lol (and until now I’m still buying gifts for friends), so it might have to wait until sometime next month.

Arizona or Alaska: I think Arizona weather is already quite like ours here, so I might enjoy Alaska a bit (if not a lot) more. There’s generally a lot more factors I find interesting with Alaska, like their food.

Birthdate: April 21st.

Build: I’m quite thin and underweight, but I actually recently made plans to start working out - both to make an effort to be healthy with myself, and also to feel good post-breakup. I’m hoping to see some changes in my body and build in the coming months.

Babies, do you have any? None of those, not sure if that’s still the plan for me.

Blonde or Brunette: Brunette.

Childhood sweetheart: Erm, does Gab count? We technically weren’t kids anymore when we first got together. I wasn’t attracted to anyone as a kid and was more concerned with growing my Pokemon pogs collection.

Current mood: I’m hungry and can go for savory breakfast foods right now, like shakshuka or huevos rancheros. Also a little anxious because I really don’t want to think about work, but tasks continue to pile up for a certain client.

Elementary School: I’m not sharing that.

Eye color: Dark brown/black.

Ever going to China? Probably not right now considering the present situation. I’d love to go to the rural cities and have a peek into their country life.

Early or Late: EARLY. Lateness is a big pet peeve, unless the excuse is super reasonable like Manila traffic or a car accident.

First Crush: The first person I felt remotely attractive to was Andi, from 6th grade. Then she moved to New Zealand and the crush quickly faded out.

Fears: For concrete things, I hate cockroaches and fair rides. For bigger concepts, I fear getting left behind, failing, and not getting approval, and the idea of never being satisfied or happy with who I am, what I’ve done, or where I’ve gone.

Future goals: Have a place of my own, be able to sustain myself, and keep myself alive.

Funny or Serious: I think everyone has to have both sides. I wouldn’t want to hang out long with people who can’t be sat down to just shoot the shit with conversations that go a little deeper. At the same time, I’d be quickly bored with someone who talks about existential or philosophical topics 24/7 and takes everything seriously.

Grandparent's names: On my dad’s side, Dolores and Federico; on my mom’s side, Agnes and Jun. My maternal grandpa is the third in multiple generations of Abelardos in the family, but his nickname is simply ‘Jun,’ because Philippines.

GPA: We don’t measure our grades with that, but we do have a GWA; I’m just not sure how that can be converted to GPA. Mine was in the 1.47 range, which was good enough for cum laude honors. I barely missed out on a magna cum laude honor (which required a 1.45 GWA), so that’s something I’ve always been pressed about and I know I could have clinched it if the pandemic didn’t cancel my final semester, which would’ve given me the chance to pull up my grades.

Going anywhere this weekend? I don’t think so. I want to spend the remaining 5 days of my break completely unproductively.

Giver or Taker: Giver. I like pleasing people.

High School: I attended one school from kindergarten to high school.

Hair color: Black.

Hate anyone for life? I don’t think so. I dislike some people, but I can’t tell if I’ll feel that way for the rest of my life.

In 8th grade, who was your best friend? Eighth grade is freshman year of high school, right? In that case, my best friend was Gabie.

Is ignorance bliss? Sometimes it is. I like no longer being updated about Gabie’s life. Back when I still tried to push my way in, I was miserable. I stopped doing so over the holidays and I just stopped reaching out, stopped trying to communicate, everything. I’ve been a lot happier that way.

Is there anything you wanna share? That’s kinda the goal with every survey I take.

Ice Cream or Cake: Right now, maybe ice cream. I’m very picky about cake, and I don’t like the spongy ones aka most cakes I know.

Jumped rope for fun: That’s exactly what I use jump ropes for. I don’t think I ever used it for fitness or working out except for maybe PE.

Junk around you right now? I mean, not really. I have my embroidery stuff in a pile beside me, but I don’t consider them junk.

Joining anything anytime soon? Not planning on it. I briefly considered joining a gym as a new thing to do for 2021, but in the end I figured working out at home would be enough. Angela recommended the latter as well, so that’s how I abandoned my gym plans quickly haha.

January or July: I guess July? January always feels just a teeny bit stranger than other months, considering it’s the beginning of a new year.

Fluffy A-Z: Kun

A: activities (things you’d do together)

Once you’ve been together a while, I think Kun would love having you in the studio while he’s working on music. It’s the biggest passion in his life and he would want to share the whole process with the person he loves the most. I also think he’d love more stay-at-home type of dates - cooking together, watching a movie, etc. He could probably be convinced to put on a magic show for you. When you do have outside dates, I think he’s kind of the traditional dinner and a movie kind of guy. Occasionally would take you to the symphony or musical theatre.

B: beauty (things about you he finds physically appealing)

I think Kun would find nice skin beautiful - and not just the skin on your face. I think he likes the feeling of soft skin under his fingers and would always be absentmindedly stroking your arm or leg or your back under your shirt.

C: cuddle style

Kun loves when you sit next to each other and you just lean your head on his shoulder. He can breathe in your scent, put his arm around your shoulders, and pull you tight next to him. His hands never stop running up and down your arm or leg. Likes when you initiate this kind of cuddling.

D: deal breakers (his relationship deal breakers)

For Kun, I think the biggest deal breaker would be someone who is so set in their ways of thinking and beliefs that there is no room for him to try and insert some of his own beliefs. I think he likes people who know what they want and who they are, but he also needs to feel like he can have an influence on them and their beliefs and ways of thinking. So someone who is too stubborn and inflexible about their ideas (or being open to new ideas) would be a complete turn-off for him.

E: education (what and how you learn from each other)

I think Kun enjoys discussing and debating a lot - and the more outrageous or weird the belief/thought/idea that you’re discussing (like, would you rather be a pirate or a ninja?), the better! He also enjoys deeper conversations and debates, but also really likes the fun, playful, and random conversations you have. From these conversations, he not only learns what your take on the subject is, but he also learns how you argue and debate and how your mind works when confronted with strange ideas. He appreciates the quirks that people have in their way of thinking - even if he completely disagrees with you.

F: first impression (the impression he gives off on your first date)

I think Kun would be a bit nervous but would hide it pretty well. He might get a bit clumsy and bump into the dinner table or drop his fork, but nothing too much to give away his nervousness. He would try really hard to always seem interested in what you were saying - even if he found the subject a bit boring or didn’t know anything about it. Overall, I think he would give off a very interested, attentive, and patient vibe on your first date.

G: gifts (things he buys for you)

Because of his thing for nice skin (see B above), I think Kun would buy you a lot of skincare stuff: lotions, bath bombs, perfumes, etc. He would also see this as one way for him to encourage you to pamper yourself. He knows that if he buys you something like this you would use it because it came from him.

H: happy (when he’s the happiest with you)

Kun would be the happiest with you when he can surprise you with something you’ve wanted or wanted to do. It can be difficult for him to keep secrets from you because a)he just doesn’t like keeping things from you in general, and b) he just gets so excited to share things with you that he can’t keep much a secret. So when he’s able to surprise you, and you like the surprise, he’s really happy that he was able to show you how much he cares for you in a fun and exciting way. He loves seeing your happiness at his surprises.

I: introduction (when and how he introduces you to the people in his life)

I think Kun would introduce you to the other WayV members pretty quickly into your relationship. It would probably take a bit longer with some of the other members of the other units (mostly just because there are so many of them). Your first meeting with WayV members would be really casual and most likely unplanned - you and Kun are just watching a movie at his place when someone comes home early. But it’s not a big deal because he’s talked about you to them - and about them to you. It would take him longer to introduce you to his family, but I still don’t think it would be really long. You’re an important part of his life and he would want his family to know you and share in his (and your) happiness.

J: jealousy

I feel like Kun would be quietly jealous. While his facial expressions may give his jealousy away, he wouldn’t ever let on verbally if there was anyone else in the room. When it’s just the two of you, he’s very verbal in telling you how he feels, but he does it in a pretty matter-of-fact way. He wouldn’t lose his temper but I can see him potentially becoming a bit childish in his mannerisms and language - pouting and rolling his eyes a bit. But again, I don’t think he’d have any problem talking rationally with you about it.

K: knew he was in love with you when ...

He had to be away for something for a long period of time (tour, filming, promotions, etc.) and you were understanding that he might not be able to talk or text with you very often - if at all. You would miss each other, but you knew that this was part of the deal when you started dating. And your grace about it (even though it sucked and you were sad and going to miss him) really showed him that you care about him and understand the demands of his career.

L: love language

Acts of Service - Kun would show his love by doing the little, everyday things that need doing. Even though he cooked dinner (your favorite), he would tell you to rest on the sofa while he cleaned up and did the dishes. If you needed to take something back to the store, he’d volunteer to do it on his way to work the next day. If you bought a bookshelf for your apartment, he’d put it together for you.

M: make-out session (his favorite type of kisses)

I actually think Kun really likes fun, teasing kisses. If you were to give him a quick peck on the lips then start to pull away, he’d try to get you to kiss him again. The more you pepper his face with small, quick kisses, the more he’d want to kiss you deeply. But he’d let you tease him for a bit first.

N: nicknames (his for you and what he likes to be called by you)

I feel like Kun would call you something fairly romantic and traditional. I can see him calling you “love” a lot. For Kun, I actually think he’d enjoy it if you called him names that slightly teased him - like “Grandpa” because he’s so cautious, or “Gordon” after grumpy chef Gordon Ramsey. He’d love a nickname based off an inside joke or story that only the two of you share.

O - odor (what he smells like)

For some reason, I think Kun smells really masculine (if that makes any sense). I think he’d use a fragrance that had a lot of typically “masculine” scents in it: woodsy, deep, earthy, etc. But I think he’d wear it lightly so that you can only really smell it when you’re cuddling.

P: pda

I don’t think Kun is big into PDA. If your relationship has been made public, I think the only thing he’d be comfortable doing is holding hands. If it isn’t public, I don’t think he’d be into any PDA - he wouldn’t want to draw attention to you. In the dorms - in front of the other members, managers, etc. - he wouldn’t hesitate to hold hands, kiss you, have you sit on his lap, cuddle, etc.

Q: quirks (odd things he does)

When he doesn’t understand something you’re trying to tell him - or when you’re having trouble explaining something to him - Kun will tilt his head to the side and kind of frown, but with a hint of a smile on his face. He’s not aware he does it - it’s just his natural reaction to finding you cute when you’re attempting to explain something to him.

R: romantic gestures

Early on in the relationship, I think he would be a bit shy about doing anything really grandiose, over the top, or really romantic. He wouldn’t want to come across as too enthusiastic until he was sure of your feelings for him. But once you’ve been together for a while and have both said “I love you”, I think he’d try to think of some really creative things - like leaving post-it notes with one word on them throughout the house, and when you put them together you get a love note.

S: saying I Love You (who says it first)

I feel like Kun would say it first. He wouldn’t wait too long after he realized it, but he would definitely want to make sure you returned the sentiment (or at least were close to doing so) before he said anything. Chances are you’d know anyway from the way he would look at you and the way he would treat you.

T: tail (what pets and animals you’d have together)

I can see you adopting numerous animals together: dogs, cats, even some more unique animals like ferrets or hedgehogs. I think that as long as they were rescue animals, Kun would be totally fine with any pets that could live in the apartment with you (so no horses, goats, etc.).

U: upbringing (what kind of dad he’d be)

I can see Kun being a strict but fun dad. I think he’d always make sure his kids knew and followed the rules he set, but he would also make sure they knew why the rules were in place - something that would be very important to him. And if his kids challenged a rule with good logic and reasoning, I think Kun would be flexible enough to change the rule.

V: vacation style

Kun is a natural leader and planner. Because of that, I think his vacation style is very organized, detailed, and everything is planned out to the minute. It doesn’t matter if you’re relaxing on the beach or exploring a large city - he’ll have the whole thing planned in no time. He’ll know exactly when and where you’re going, how you’re getting there, and what to do when you get there.

W: wild card

I think Kun is someone who is quite certain about what he wants out of life and out of a life partner. He’s also very focused on the things he wants. But I also think that sometimes he can be so focused on what he thinks he wants that he misses some other good things. He would be really appreciative if you were to force him to notice and enjoy something he would typically overlook. He would probably resist a bit at first, but after you explained why he should pay attention, he would do it and enjoy it.

X: eXtremes (the two extreme sides of his personality in a relationship)

I feel that when Kun is hurt he can be very quiet and not really give you the opportunity to explain or apologize (at least right away). He would need some quiet and distance in order to work through his feelings before you talk it out. His emotions when hurt can get pretty dark and he can be full of doubts about himself. On the other hand, he can be very childlike (not childish) in his approach to showing you his feelings when he’s happy. He likes trying to surprise you and gets genuine enjoyment out of your reactions - he loves to laugh, clap, and make funny faces when you react to his surprises.

Y: yes (how often he gives in to you)

I think Kun would give in to you fairly often - but he’d make you work for it first! He can be pretty stubborn and set in his ways of thinking (although he is open to new ideas) so you would need to come up with a good argument. But a lot of the time he’d give in anyway - he just likes hearing your argument and seeing how your mind works.

Z: zzz (sleeping style when you’re together)

Generally, I think Kun sleeps on his side, and i can see him hugging a pillow as well. So when you sleep together, he’s the big spoon while you sleep - and you’re the pillow he hugs. I think he’d really like falling asleep with his nose pressed into the back of your neck and your legs entwined.

5 Times Monica and Her Mom Have Difficult Conversations About Auntie Carol (+1 Time She Plans A Parent Trap With Her Skrull Friend)

When Monica is five years old, her mom and Auntie Carol don’t come home in time for dinner.

This is unusual, they’re always home in time for dinner. But that day they aren’t.

She’d known something was weird before that, when the phone rang while she was playing Planes and Pilots with her bears Bessie and Jerrie, and Grandma almost dropped the phone and then pulled the cord until she could talk from the other side of the door. But it wasn’t anything that was important.

She’d thought so at first anyway.

But when Monica starts asking for cookies Grandma actually gives them to her instead of making her wait until she’s eaten her lunch. And then she doesn’t start getting ready for her mom and auntie to come home. And then Grandpa comes over to watch her too, and that only ever happens when Mom and Auntie Carol have to work on Sundays.

By then something has started clawing inside Monica, it feels like there’s a cat trapped in her stomach and trying to scratch everything in its sight. Grandma and Grandpa are so quiet.

She spends almost the whole evening just trying to draw but none of the colors look right and even though she’s big now, there’s frustrated tears at the edges of her eyes that she’s holding back by sheer stubbornness.

By the time the front doors finally open, Monica’s eyelids are beginning to grow heavy and her head is tucked into Grandma’s lap. She shoots up straight and is off the couch like a rocket before those doors get a chance to close.

“Mom!” Monica exclaims as she rushes into the hallway but stops short at the sight of her mom.

There’s tear tracks on her mom’s cheeks and she’s clutching at the wall like she’ll fall if she lets go. And she’s all alone.

“Mom?” She asks, suddenly so scared she doesn’t know what to do.

“Hey, honey.” Mom says, voice hoarse, and drops to her knees in front of Monica. She smiles at her, but it’s small and weak and only makes Monica more scared. “Let me talk to Grandma and Grandpa for a minute, and then- then I have to tell you something. Okay?”

“Where’s Auntie Carol?” Monica says in response, the claws inside her stomach getting sharper.

“Just a minute. Okay?” Her mom says again and leads her up to Monica’s room, sitting her down on her bed. She kisses her forehead and whispers into her hair before she leaves. “I love you.”

“I love you too.” She says back because that’s what she and Auntie Carol always do, and because it’s true.

Then she grabs Amelia from her pillow and clenches the bear against her chest. Waiting for Mom to come back. It feels like forever before she finally does.

And then her mom sits in her bed and pulls Monica and Amelia into her arms.

She knows this means it's going to be a 'serious conversation' - just like the time when Mom told her about how she couldn't tell her friends that Auntie Carol lived in the same room as Mom because some grownups could be really mean about it, even though there was nothing wrong with that. Monica knew that anyway though, the moms and dads of her friends had the same rooms too, and though Monica didn't have a dad she had Auntie Carol, which was the same thing.

"There was an accident." Her mom says, her hands running slowly and soothingly over Monica’s braided hair.

"What kind of accident?" Monica asks, pulling Amelia so close to her chest that her nose dug into her shoulder.

"Auntie Carol's plane crashed and we can't find her." Mom says and starts rocking her in her lap. Monica’s lower lip trembles and she smushes her face into Amelia’s fur to hide it.

"But... you will, right?" She says, voice tiny and quivering, and she doesn’t feel very big at all anymore.

"I don't know, baby," Mom says and squeezes her tighter "I hope so."

Monica looks up to her mom and bursts into tears as soon as she has, her mom is already crying, eyes staring forward out the window and into nothing. She looks just as scared as Monica feels, and something about that is so very wrong Monica has no words for it. Just the inherent certainty that Mom isn’t supposed to be scared.

She falls asleep in her mom's arms that night, doesn’t remember if she ever stopped crying, just remembers feeling her Auntie Carol's absence like a cold river-stone in her chest and somehow knowing there's a stone just like it in her mom's chest too.

Monica is eight years old and Auntie Carol has been missing for three years. There was a funeral not that long after the day of the accident but her mom doesn’t really believe that Auntie Carol is dead, Monica can tell because she doesn’t believe either.

She's heard her mom and grandmother fighting about it sometimes, because Grandma can tell too and she does believe that Auntie Carol's really gone. Monica doesn't like it when they fight about it, she's afraid that one day Grandma will win and her mom will start believing it too.

She doesn’t know what wakes her up that night. But when she opens her eyes, the windows are dark. After blinking the sleep from her eyes though Monica grows thirsty and carefully gets up from her bed, pushing her feet into her fluffy panda slippers.

Halfway down the steps though she hears her mom’s voice. She sounds upset so Monica stops to listen.

"Where the hell are you Carol?" Mom says and Monica’s heart starts running in her chest. She slowly takes the last few steps down, avoiding the creaky one by grabbing hold of the railing and very carefully skipping it.

She sneaks a look into the living room and her heart falls with a painful swoop at finding her mom alone.

"I heard your voice. I know I did. I didn't imagine it no matter how much those badge wearing bastards try to tell me otherwise. You were fine after the crash, so where did you go." Mom’s pacing back and forth through the room, eyes toward the ceiling, like that’s where Auntie Carol’s hiding in.

"My mother's been trying to get me to let you go. Yes, I know what you'd say: 'She never liked me, Maria.' And you're wrong, she liked you fine... eventually."

Grandma didn’t like Auntie Carol?

"Maybe... maybe she's right. Maybe I should stop waiting for you to show up like some kind of gift from heaven." She says, sounding frustrated now.

Monica has to bite her lip to stop herself from yelling that Mom couldn’t do that.

"Wherever it is you are, it's not here. And it doesn't look like you're in any particular hurry to come back." Her mom says, and she sounds mad now, but also sad, like she did when Monica spilled ketchup on Auntie Carol’s favorite jacket after she took it without asking permission.

"Where the f-" her mom starts saying but stops mid word as she finally seems to catch sight of her. "Monica?"

Monica steps out of her hiding place, feeling a bit guilty, she knows it’s rude to spy on grownups. But then she remembers what Mom had just been saying and that overcomes the little niggle of guilt. "You're angry at Auntie Carol."

"No, baby. I'm not." Mom tells her, dropping to her knees in front of her.

"You sound angry.” Monica argues and then flinches as a terrible thought crosses her mind. “Do you- do you think she left us on purpose?"

"Of course not. She loved us, you know that." Mom says and her eyes are as wide and honest as ever, so she knows that her mom isn’t lying to make her feel better.

But that just makes it more confusing.

"Then why are you mad?" She asks, not understanding.

"Sometimes it hurts less when we're mad." Her mom says very quietly and wipes away a tear from Monica’s cheek. She hadn’t even noticed she’d started crying.

She looks down and starts playing with the sleeves of her pajamas, it makes it easier to say something she’s never told anyone before. “Sometimes I’m mad at her too.”

“And that’s okay. It’s okay, baby. It doesn’t mean we love her any less, do you understand?”

Monica nods, even though she doesn’t really.

“Did you come down here for something, baby?” Mom asks after Monica doesn’t say anything more.

“I was thirsty.” Monica says through a sudden hiccup. She hates them, they always show up when she gets upset.

“Let’s get you a glass of warm milk then, okay?” Mom offers and wipes more tears from Monica’s face.

“Yeah.” Monica nods and lets her mom pull her up into a lingering hug, feels it as she starts drawing little circles over her back while they move toward the kitchen. It makes some of the lingering pain of thinking about Auntie Carol leach out of her but some of it remains, some of it hasn’t really ever gone away.

Monica is ten years old. And lately she’s started to think about something that never seemed like it mattered before but now doesn’t feel quite right. She’s thought about it so much that it finally feels like she’ll burst if she doesn’t ask her mom about it.

"Hey, Mom? I have a question about Auntie Carol." Monica says after she stops in front of her and sits down on the opposite side of Mom’s work table.

They’re in the little hanger near the house. Her mom’s busy working on what looks like a faulty injection pump.

"What is it, baby?" She asks and looks around for a different tool when hers proves too big to ply open the metal covering. Monica passes her the smaller one that’s on her side of the table. “Thank you, honey.”

"Why do we call her Auntie when... when she was... more?" Monica says, jumping straight to the point.

Her mom puts down the broken engine part and the tool she’d just given her, and looks at Monica. Then she lets out a long breath and seems to be steeling herself for the conversation.

Monica doesn’t let herself fidget. She’s not going to be nervous about this, if she doesn’t look like she can handle the answer her mom might decide to tell her she’s too young to understand.

"You loved her." She instead says, continuing to her next point in her mental list of reasons for why something isn’t quite right.

"Of course I did." Mom says but her face tells Monica she’s taking her question seriously.

"And she lived with us. And she made us breakfast because she always woke up so early, and she used to kiss you sometimes, and we were a family. And it doesn't... feel like my aunt is gone.” It’s the truth, because she thinks about her as Auntie Carol, but she's never thought of her as her aunt. Not the way other kids have talked about their aunts and uncles anyway, even though some of them live at the same house as them, just like Auntie Carol used to live with her and Mom. “Laila's aunt left for Minnesota and it doesn't hurt her like it hurts when I think about Auntie Carol. It hurts like it hurt Johnny when his mom died last summer."

"That's because we were raising you together." Mom says but it sounds like an excuse.

"Like parents do. So shouldn't she have been Mama Carol? Why didn't I use to call her that?" She says, trying to drive her point home.

Her mom sighs and gets up to pull her bench to Monica’s side of the table. Then she sits down and takes Monica’s hands into her own.

"Because people can be really cruel." Mom tells her, eyes staring straight into Monica’s. "You remember that talk we had about how you should always tell me if one of your teachers is particularly harsh on you, Laila, Gabriel, Angel and Jordan but not the rest of your class?"

"Because we're black and they're not allowed to do that?" She asks, a low-burning flame igniting in her chest at remembering the conversation Mom’s referring to. The one her mom has had with her more then once because she always says it’s important to have it fresh in her memory.

"Yes, well sometimes there are people who hate us for who we choose to love, like there are people who hate us for the color of our skin.” Here she picks up her smaller hand and pointedly kisses it like she always does during those talks, she says it’s a reminded that Monica’s beautiful and that no one is allowed to make her think otherwise. “And no matter how much we'd like to punch them all in the face, and no matter how much they would deserve it, sometimes when we have something to protect, it's safer to not step in front of those people in the first place."

“What did you have to protect?” She asks, not wanting to but beginning to understand.

“You. Our jobs. Each other.” Mom says with a sad smile that makes Monica feel like maybe she shouldn’t have asked in the first place. She hates making Mom sad.

“Oh.” She says and thinks about this for a moment, feels herself grow angry at yet another unjust thing. “Well, it’s not fair, we shouldn’t have to lie about how much she means to us just because people are stupid.”

“You’re right, baby, it’s really not fair at all.” Her mom says and squeezes her hands between her palms. It’s like being reassured but Monica doesn’t want to be reassured.

She pulls back to jump to her feet and clenches her hands into fists. The flickering flame inside her has been fed a little bit more fuel.

“And you said we should always stand up for ourselves because other people won’t, so isn’t that true here too?” She says, knowing she’s right, knowing her mom agrees, and still knowing that there’s very little she can do about it right now anyway.

“I wish it was that easy, Monica.”

Monica is eleven, and yesterday Auntie Carol came home. Monica and Mom had been right, she hadn’t died and she didn’t leave them on purpose.

It’s been a day since then and so much has happened. Mom and Auntie Carol are heroes, they saved a spaceship full of people - they were aliens but they were also people. She’s already prepared to argue with anyone who would say otherwise, even though she knows this is a secret and that there’s no one else who knows.

One of them is her new friend. Her name is Talia, she’s shy but really nice, Monica’s going to miss her.

She’s going to miss Auntie Carol too. That shouldn’t feel like a new absence, she’s been missing her for so long now after all. But somehow the sting is fresh. Even though she’s so proud of her.

They said goodbye to her half an hour ago but Monica and her mom are still sitting on their porch and looking up at the stars, staring at them like if they try hard enough she’ll still be up there looking back. It’s here that Monica finally pulls together the courage to ask the question that has been bothering her for the past two days.

“Why didn’t you tell her, Mom?” She asks, turning her face sideways to look at her.

“What’s that, baby?” She asks, voice sounding far away even coming from right beside her. Monica’s pretty sure it’s somewhere up in the sky with both their hearts.

“You didn’t tell Auntie Carol that you loved her. And that she loved you.” Monica isn’t going to let this go, they’d gotten her back. She won’t let them lose her when there’s so easy a way for them to keep her.

“She doesn’t remember it, honey.”

Monica continues staring at her mom, her mom continues looking up.

“So? You could have reminded her. And she remembered that I was Lieutenant Trouble.” She says and feels a smile crossing her face again, Auntie Carol remembers her. Even if it’s just that one memory, it’s one Monica shares with her and somehow that’s all that matters.

“I know. But... it would have made it harder, and it would have meant making her choose and it wouldn’t have been fair to do that. Talos and his people need her right now.” Mom says, finally looking down and tucking Monica against her side.

“But she left us that communicator, Mom. We’ll be able to talk to her now, and she said she’d visit.” Monica says, pleading for her mom to change her mind about this.

“And I’m sure she’s going to. But you can’t tell someone they love you, they have to figure that out on their own or it doesn’t really mean anything.”

“But-”

“It’s late, baby, you should get ready for bed,” She says, standing up and reaching out to pull Monica to her feet too.

Monica lets Mom take her hand but doesn’t let her drop the conversation. “I think she does though. Love us.”

“Monica-”

“She looked at you just like she did in that photo you took out before we showed her the rest of them.” Mom looks surprised, like she’d thought Monica hadn’t noticed. She had though, and once they started going through them, Monica knew which one she’d taken. It was the one where there were just inches between Mom and Auntie Carol’s faces and both of them were visibly laughing at something. But there was also a strange look on Auntie Carol’s face, like she was completely spellbound by Monica’s mom. “So I think you should tell her.”

Her mom just shakes her head and goes on the offensive, starting to tickle her till Monica yells at her to stop through her uncontrollable giggles.

“To bed with you, Lieutenant Trouble.” Her mom says with amusement.

Monica finally listens. She doesn’t admit defeat though, she just needs to think of a new strategy.

Auntie Carol does call them. She calls them almost every night around dinnertime. And when she hasn’t she always tells them why later, sometimes she even retells the coolest parts of whatever fight had happened. Monica’s pretty sure she skips a lot of the more gnarly details to not make Mom mad though.

But during the nights when Auntie Carol calls on time, Monica pays close attention to how she and Mom interact during them.

By this point Monica’s pretty sure she has conclusive evidence that she was right. Auntie Carol might not remember how it was before, and if Monica’s honest there’s a lot she doesn’t remember either - she was only five after all, - but she’s sure that however it was then, it’s a lot like that now too.

They smile at each other and joke with each other, dryly and occasionally through sarcasm but Monica’s well aware that those are her mom’s favorite modes of humor. And whenever Mom isn’t looking at her, Auntie Carol’s smiles turn all sappy and soft.

Auntie Carol loves Mom, it isn’t even a question.

Besides, there’s also the way she’s started to say goodbye when it’s time to cut off the call.

“Love you, Trouble, Maria.” Auntie Carol says with a smile for Monica that she knows is honest but also only half the story. Because then, like gravity, her eyes would always flicker toward her mom.

And yes, Monica has noticed how Auntie Carol always puts her first. Like a barrier between the sentiment and the other person it’s being directed at. Her moms are impossible - she’s started sometimes to think of Auntie Carol like that, as the second of her two moms, if only inside the safety of her own mind.

“Love you too, Captain.” Monica says and turns significantly towards her mom.

“Goodnight, Carol.” Mom says instead as the hologram flickers off, leaving them alone a second later. It was still enough time for Monica to see that brief half a heartbeat where Auntie Carol’s smile fell a bit.

She glares at her mom. Mom, as is starting to become her habit, pretends not to notice it and stands up to take the empty dishes to the kitchen.

“Grab your plate, honey.” Mom just says, already by the doorway.

Monica does and then stomps off after her.

“You’re supposed to say it back.” Monica says, losing her patience. It’s been happening for months now, this weird thing where they almost say something and then never actually do.

“We’ve talked about this, Monica.” Mom says, placing her stack of dishes in the sink and then taking the ones from Monica.

“No. you said that Auntie Carol had to figure it out on her own. I think she’s figured it out.” Monica says back and then, perhaps rather unwisely, actually says the thing that’s been hiding in her mind for a while now. “I think you’re just scared.”

Then she freezes, she knows she’s not supposed to talk to Mom like that.

“I am.” Mom says, instead of immediately sending her to her room, though the look that comes with the words is stern. Monica’s on thin ice here.

Monica stops in her tracks, - not because she’s one step away from getting in trouble but because she didn’t expect Mom to actually admit that she’s scared. Now that she has, Monica’s not sure how to proceed.

For a minute she just stands there as her mom starts washing the dishes. What finally comes out is: “But you love her. And she loves you too.”

“Maybe. Or maybe she thinks so because one of those flashes told her that she once did.” Mom says back, adding more dish-washing liquid to the sponge.

“But don’t you want it to be like it used to be?” Monica asks, finally feeling lost.

“It’s complicated.” Mom says and continues doing the dishes.

Monica grabs a towel to help with the drying and falls silent after that. Mind busy stewing in frustration over adults and their need to call very simple things ‘complicated’. It’s not complicated, it’s so easy; her mom still loves Auntie Carol and Auntie Carol is clearly either starting to remember or has fallen in love with Mom all over again. Either way the answer to what they should do is very obvious.

Monica has a terrible feeling that if she lets them continue like this on their own they’re never going to figure it out. She can’t let that happen.

She’s not supposed to call Auntie Carol for anything other than an emergency because there’s no way to predict if she’ll receive that call while on board their hijacked space cruiser, during a live firefight or while on a covert op. It’s all around safer if Auntie Carol’s the one who contacts them.

But Auntie Carol is not the only person Monica uses their holographic communicator to talk with.

Which is why Monica is closing her bedroom door and turning on her radio to cover up the noises from her planned conversation. That done, she goes back to the communicator and enters the - by now familiar - string of Kree symbols.

“Hey, Talia. Are you by yourself right now?” Monica says as soon as the call connects and her friend’s image forms above the device.

“Hi, Monica.” Talia says from her side of the galaxy as they grin at each other. “I’m in my room. What’s up?”

When Monica first met her, Talia might have come across as shy and quiet but she learned really fast that this was true only while Talia hadn’t known her. Now that they’re friends they’ve fallen into the habit of talking for hours, sometimes right up until the point where their parents have to make them stop and go to sleep.

“I think I need your help.” Monica says and starts ruffling through her bag for the book that’s given her an idea. “You know how Auntie Carol plans to come to Earth for a few days next month, because it finally looks like things are going to be quiet for a little while?”

“Yeah, my dad’s going to be free too, he said he wants us to spend some time together while it lasts. Why?” Talia says, looking curious.

“I need Auntie Carol to spend more than a few days home. I’ve told you about how she and Mom have been dancing around each other without ever just sitting down and admitting that they’re in love with each other, right?” She says, knowing she’s kinda whining a bit but after seven months with a first-row seat, she thinks she’s due.

“Only once or twice.” Talia says with a smirk and a heavy dose of sarcasm.

Monica throws one of her stuffed bears through the hologram and gets met by the sound of Talia laughing as the light reforms back into her.

“That wasn’t nice. I thought you wanted my help.” She says, still smirking. This is why Talia is her best friend even though she’s two years younger than her.

“I do.” Monica says and turns serious. “Can you talk your dad into taking you here to Earth too?”

“Maybe?” She says, though she doesn’t sound entirely sure. It’ll do for now, they can throw around some ideas on how to accomplish that part after Monica explains her plan.

“I found this book in the library and it gave me an idea,” she pulls out her copy of ‘Lottie and Lisa’ to show it to Talia, “it’s about these twin sisters who got separated as babies by their parents, and then found each other and decided to switch places while pretending to be each other.”

“But what does that have to do with your mom and aunt?” Talia asks.

“Well, I was thinking. If you were here and pretended to be me and neither of us would tell anyone which of us was which...”

“...your aunt and my dad couldn’t leave before we told them.” Talia says, finishing Monica’s thought.

“And we won’t tell them until Mom and Auntie Carol admit how they feel about each other. I don’t even think we’ll have to do much, they just need to spend enough time together that they forget all the stupid reasons they’ve come up with for why they’re too scared to be together.” Monica finishes by letting out a long, extended, exhausted breath.

“That’s brilliant.” Talia says, her pretty green eyes widening in wonder.

Monica smiles, proud of herself.

“So can you do it? Make yourself look like me?” She asks and bites her lip, this is the one part of her idea she isn’t sure of. If Talia can’t turn into her, then her plan gets unraveled at the seams and she’s back to square one.

“Probably?” Talia says, bending her neck to the side and seemingly taking a new look at Monica. “You’re not that much bigger than me and I’ve been practicing with dad. It’s also a lot easier if we know the person we’re trying to turn into. But I can’t really do the memories thing yet.”

“That’s okay. I’ll tell you everything you have to know and if they ask us something we haven’t covered we’ll both pretend that we don’t know the answer.” Monica says and smiles an exhilarated smile.

This is going to work. This has to work.

They step downstairs hand in hand - hand in the same hand, in fact, - it’s time for the show.

“Monica?” Her mom says cautiously.

“Yes, Mom?” Monica and Talia answer in unison just like they’ve practiced, two identical grins on their faces.

“What are you two doing?” Mom says a suspicious cadence coloring her voice and a look on her face like she’s already getting an idea of what they’re planning. And why.

Monica doesn’t mind, as long as her mom isn’t sure which of them is the real Monica there’s nothing she can do about it. Knowing what Monica wants from them might actually hurry this thing along faster.

They exchange a look and pull their lips in a smirk, Monica has to admit it feels a bit strange seeing her own face looking back but it’s also kinda... really cool too.

I had definitively forgotten about supernatural until I saw it all over my dashboard in the year of our lord 2020 lmao like in my wholock days I tried to watch the show because everyone on my dash (is it still called dashboard?) was talking about it and I watched about 8 episodes before dropping it. But seeing it again on the dash was actually a happy surprise because the memes are too funny hahaha

I’m extremely shy irl and on the internet as well but I wanna say that @janeturenne is one of the best authors ever and her fanfics are a blessing in my life; also @thebraxiatelcollection who brings awesome content to my dash and is also one of the best authors. Uhhh I guess I’m neutral about the current companions. They’re not my favorites but I don’t really dislike them - they had a lot of potential and chibs came up with some good storylines but did not develop them well in my opinion. I think Graham is a fun grandpa whom I’m going to miss when he leaves; Ryan is cool and could’ve done a lot more if the writers had kept a few things, it’d be awesome if he vlogged all of their adventures. He’s like the one I was curious to see more but sadly didn’t feel a connection; and Yaz, I hope she’ll keep growing and that her friendship with the Doctor will finally be developed to a level we can connect to her.

It sounds weird because with the fam it’s always ‘what I wish could have been’ because I never felt really connected to them :(

I don’t know if I got the question right but it’s three things I wish I saw more in my main fandom? Well, if it’s that, then, 3 things about the Doctor Who fandom: 1) people having more civilized or light-hearted discussions about things. Like, I genuinely disliked an 8th doctor audio I listened once that my friends loved, and they made fun of me and we joked about it. Also once we were in a live twitch video playing among us and discussing doctor who, and then we got into a ship “discourse” as a joke and nobody really cared and just laughed because everyone knew it’s fictional shit so why get mad over it? 2) Doctor Who has a titanic amount of content, it’s all canon but at the same time it’s not, so who cares? If you want to listen to Big Finish audios and if you can afford it, then lisiten; if you can’t, it’s okay, no one has the right to tell you you’re less of a fan. Just tell them to fuck off; 3) The best way to keep fandom alive is by creating content. Here in my local fandom we have several podcasts dedicated to all areas of the whoniverse (the show, the expanded universe, the audios, etc), those old fandom websites who do serious work to bring news to the fans, people who make subtitles for the classic series (we don’t have it available here so they do their best to make it accessible to other fans), accounts dedicated to promoting dr who fans who create content, and we even have people making their own audiodramas with dw characters and writing book-lenght fanfiction to help explain the show to people who’ve never watched it, and a great variety of things. I’ve seen a few of these things in the international fandom, mostly by older fans, so I wish younger fans about my age who have the means to make this kind of stuff would make it too. Maybe there’d be less twitter drama out there lol

The Master is a big fan of musicals and in the 77 years he spent on earth he watched every single one ever. I’m gonna be bold and say that when he was young, still Koschei, he was an artist, and thought about dropping everything to become an actor on Gallifrey. Time Lords do appreciate art, and have their own plays, but it’s just the same old and boring ones the young people don’t care about. The Master then created a shocking performance that was way ahead of its time and the older Time Lords were so appalled they banned him from writing and presenting plays and that’s his villain origin story
