Facts About the German Shepherd Dog Breed
One of the most well-liked dog breeds in America is the German Shepherd Dog. The ever-popular German shepherd is intelligent, simple to teach, highly active, and wants to be busy. They generally require a lot of daily movement; else, they develop mischievous or high-strung behaviour.
Tumblr media
Breeder Overview
Weight: 75-95 lbs
Height: 23-25 inches
Coat: Medium Length Double Coat
Color: Most colors other than white, Black, Black & Tan, Sable, Red & Black, Black & Silver, Grey
Features: Naturally Upright Ears
Energy Level: Average
Tendency to Bark: Low
Age: 10-13 Years
Hypoallergenic: No
Personality
German Shepherd personalities tend to be distant but not typically hostile. If they were reared among kids and other animals, German shepherd dogs get along well with both. German shepherd dogs should begin socialising and obedience training early in life to help prevent over-guarding and aggressive behaviour. The breed is thought to be intelligent and simple to teach.
Health
The majority of German Shepherds are healthy, however like all breeds, they are prone to some health issues. It's crucial to be aware of these diseases if you're thinking about getting a German Shepherd even if not all of them will affect them. Hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, gastric dilatation-volvulus, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, degenerative myelopathy, and allergies are a few of these conditions.
Care
German shepherds need weekly brushing because of their double-layered, thick coats. German Shepherds are bred for action and were first developed to herd flocks all day. They must exercise every day to expend all of their energy, which they have a lot of. A early age should be chosen to start socialisation and training for your German shepherd due to their protective nature.
Feeding
Your dog's diet will vary depending on its size, exercise level, age, and other characteristics. German Shepherds need a minimum of 22% protein during growth phases and 18% protein for adult dogs in their diets. To meet their energy demands, puppies require 8% fat, while adults need 5% fat. Give your German Shepherd a high-quality, protein-rich diet that includes meats like beef, chicken, lamb, pork, eggs, fish, and plant-based proteins found in foods like grains, beans, and vegetables. The food should also be rich in minerals, vitamins, and fats.
History
In the late 19th century, German breeders developed the forerunners of the German Shepherd as working dogs, notably as sheepdogs and farm security dogs. Max von Stephanitz recognised the first German Shepherd dog, whom he named Horand von Grafrath, in 1899, after much debate over the traits to emphasise in the breed.
After World War I, the German Shepherd was renamed the Alsatian wolf dog (or just called an Alsatian) in the UK and the US, and this practise continued until 2006.
Getting a German shepherd from a breeder
It's easy to get a German Shepherd, but you should be ready. If you purchase a German Shepherd puppy, you should expect to spend a lot of time training it on critical behaviours like sleeping through the night and going pee outdoors, as well as preventing biting and barking.
Contact a reputable German Shepherd breeder, pay a visit before committing to the purchase, and make your own decisions to help you find a German Shepherd puppy or adult dog.

German Shepherd Care
German shepherd dogs need some attention, guidance, and care, but in return they will give you a lifetime of loyalty and love. They are suitable for all kinds of families, but it is ideal to get them as pets while they are young so they have plenty of time to be trained and become used to living with their owners.
Exercise
German Shepherds have a high level of energy, thus regular exercise is necessary. German Shepherds often require daily exercise of at least 90 minutes. This can happen throughout the day and involve a variety of high-intensity exercises like jogging, running, and playing. The exact amount depending on personal characteristics including age, personality, specificity, and bone health. Avoid over-exerting your puppy since this could cause joint and mobility problems in the future.
Grooming
All dogs, even German Shepherds, require grooming! To keep the dog's coat from matting, grooming is essential. When you groom your dog, you can look for lumps and bumps, sore patches, and parasites as well as maintain their skin's health. Make sure your dog enjoys getting groomed by rubbing and praising it frequently. The ideal age to begin pet grooming is when the animal is a puppy. Older dogs can also be trained to love grooming time, but if they are resistant, it may require some patience on your part.
Diet and Nutrition
Your dog's diet will vary depending on its size, exercise level, age, and other characteristics. German Shepherds need a minimum of 22% protein during growth phases and 18% protein for adult dogs in their diets. To meet their energy demands, puppies require 8% fat, while adults need 5% fat. Give your German Shepherd a high-quality, protein-rich diet that includes meats like beef, chicken, lamb, pork, eggs, fish, and plant-based proteins found in foods like grains, beans, and vegetables. I was asked to read a mating outcome this morning for a workingline GSD breeder. I rarely comment and if I do, it's brief because it's a waste of my time. People don't actually want an honest assessment; just for me to say, yeah, great idea. I don't argue because I don't care. I'm not making any money by selling semen and the consequences of returned puppies sold to pet homes aren't my problem.
I will say that if you are buying a workingline GSD puppy, make sure the breeder can explain in detail what's going on in the pedigree. Is the hardness and aggression balanced by solid nerve? Where exactly is this nerve coming from? Why is this specific dog being line bred on? Okay, there are all these dogs bringing drive, is it so much drive that you are blowing the nerve out? What does high fight drive actually mean in this context? Are the two known lines for bringing a high probability of GDV in this pedigree? Is the risk explained even though it's in the fourth generation? What are the orthopedics like in the overall pedigree? Any dogs known to be joint improvers? Why are you choosing a sire that has sibling breedings in his pedigree? What makes that specific line special enough for the risks? If the breeder can only talk about how the parents are great dogs then it's best to move on to someone who has more knowledge.
I'm competent at reading pedigrees in my breed and I've been doing it long enough to have my assessments been proven correct by the dogs themselves. (Why are you doing a 3-3 line breeding on a dog known for extreme aggression and hardness and selling to pet homes? Four puppies were returned at ten months of age. That sort of thing.) Being right isn't any fun because it's the dogs that suffer. People want dogs that they can do all the fun things with; not stress and feeling afraid of their own dog.
Thoughts and prayers.
*This post isn't directed at any specific person. I get asked to read several pedigrees each week.

For a long time my betrothed and I have played chicken on getting a dog. We’d say, “We could get a dog!”
The other person would have to be like, “No, we can’t have a dog,” and list the reasons why.
But the rock solid reason we had was our very senior cat and how she deserved not to be harassed by a puppy. Since she’s passed my betrothed and I have gotten weaker. Today culminated in scrolling puppy pictures and talking more seriously about it.
Now the main reason is money. Once I finish this semester though I’ll be almost completely done with school, my last semester is just two light classes. So realistically we can start looking in January. Something for us to look forward to.

Both dogs had their annual today and everyone was right, Reese did get bigger. Gained about 10 more pounds of muscle this last year because he's apparently never going to stop growing ever and hit a lean 95 pounds. Tassie has hit what I think is going to be her max of 65, though she may surprise me since she's starting to get into some good bone growth right now. We'll see what happens with her!
Overall pretty impressed with them, though I do have to keep an eye on Tassie since the vet examined one of my concerns and said she might be displaying some early hip dysplasia, we'll see. I'm going to wait until she's 18 months and done the majority of her bone growth before I schedule xrays to be certain. It would be extremely abnormal if she is since both parents scored well on their OFA's, but, and this is why I'll always support a good breeder, if she is I do have that breeder contract to fall back on.
And then, surprise of all fucking surprise's, I brought both dogs into Petsmart afterwards and an extremely reactive dog came in and went off when he saw Reese and Tassie, and NEITHER of them reacted. The other owner kind of rudely allowed her dog to keep in eyesight of us and therefore keep going off, but other than a little bit of whining from Reese? Nothing. I was so impressed with them both, I am quite pleased with the pair today, even if they did cost me over a grand in vet bills.

Listen...I have a young niece in the house every other day, and it's her favorite show. So naturally the show hooked it's claws into my husband and I, and yeah it's as good as people said.
Instead of more Elder Scrolls Art, take some Bluey art I guess, of my husband and I as dogs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both German Shepherds, as it just makes sense, given our plans for the Homestead, plus my husband's family are retired, reputable German Shepherd breeders.
⚠️ "Panda" or "Piebald" German Shepherds should NOT be bred! ⚠️
I am a "Panda" German Shepherd due to DARK HUMOR ALONE, as I have quite a few medical issues and dogs bred out of standard, like a "Panda" Shepherd, are more at risk of medical issues.
My husband is a standard Black and Tan, American work line German Shepherd Dog.
